From Nelle L’Amour, a #1 Amazon All-Star Author and USA Today and New York Times bestseller, a new steamy and suspenseful age gap romance with a twist you won’t see coming.

Sofi

When I was asked to interview Roman Hurst, I thought I was prepared.

But how could I be prepared for the gorgeous man awaiting me?

Nor was I prepared when he offered me a job. To be his muse.

And I definitely wasn’t prepared to fall in love with him.

A man fifteen years my senior. Who is hiding a dark secret.

A secret so devastating, it could rip us apart.

No, I wasn’t prepared for that at all.

Roman

I wasn’t expecting this colorful breath of fresh air to fly into my life.

To wrench me from my dark cocoon.

Make me feel things I haven’t felt in years.

Sofi Lockhart. My beautiful, feisty butterfly.

I’m going to catch her. Make her mine.

But there are predators out there who want to shatter her wings.

To tear us apart.

No, I wasn’t expecting that at all.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

Oh man, I really had high hopes for Butterfly, and it came up a bit short for me. I loved Nelle’s Undying Love duet and her Unforgettable trilogy. Based on the blurb for Butterfly, I thought this book would be a similar emotional rollercoaster… I liked it, but I didn’t love it.

Roman had some serious Christian Gray vibes, and it took me a long time to warm up to him as a tortured hero and not just think he was a bossy jerk. I really wasn’t feeling the instalove connection with Roman and Sofi and was taken aback when she suddenly realized she was in love with him.

The twist in this story was good — I didn’t expect that — but it kinda came out of left field. Sofi does bring Roman back to life, in a sense, and that transition evolved nicely.

Overall, Butterfly is an intense age-gap billionaire boss romance with some twists and turns. I just had higher hopes for this one and didn’t fall for the H/h as much as I would have liked to.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Wow. This book was all kinds of emotional. My heart just broke for Emmett and all that he was dealing with! His love and dedication to Tatum, even years after their divorce, was amazing. One phrase was all it would have taken to prevent his marriage from imploding, but Emmett made a choice to always love their daughter Lucy more, and that altered the course of all their lives forever.

Tatum…. I hated her with a fierce passion. She was such a shrew. I hated the way she treated Emmett, and then when the shoe was on the other foot, she still didn’t see how horrible she’d been to him. Honestly, I didn’t think she deserved Emmett, and that made me love him more! When the truth about the accident that broke up their marriage finally was revealed, I was relieved for Emmett on so many levels.

Connor Crais did a fantastic job narrating this audio book! I got every bit of Emmett’s heartache, thrills, hopes, dreams, sadness and love. He really brought this character to life in the most amazing way!

For Lucy is an emotional rollercoaster of a ride that will stick with you long after you have finished reading the beautiful epilogue!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Broken Hearts, by Rebecca Jenshak

Broken Hearts by Rebecca Jenshak is now live!

She’s a figure skater. He’s a hockey player. Things are about to heat up on the ice.

Rhett Rauthruss is single for the first time in six years. He’s fresh off a long-term, long-distance relationship and ready to make the most of what’s left of college.

Party with his boys, get to the Frozen Four with his team, and maybe play the field for a change.

Sienna Hale knows a thing or two about heartbreak. She’s a college athlete about to skate for the last time, and nothing is going to throw her off course. Not her worries about finding a job after college, not the whispers of last year’s accident on the ice, and not the cute hockey player who keeps asking her out.

They think they want different things, but when it heats up between them, there’s no denying they have something in common–even if it’s just for a night.

Another great addition to the Valley University universe! I admit that I’ve been quite intrigued by Rhett in the previous books, and the guy completely captured my heart as he fell for Sienna in this absolutely enchanting story!

When this figure skater and hockey player cross paths, the chemistry is sizzling. This story is about a genuinely good guy and a genuinely good girl who have an amazing connection right from the start. Broken Hearts does have a slightly darker feel to it than some of Rebecca Jenshak’s other books in this universe, and the author has beautifully written a somewhat serious issue into this beautiful romance story.

I think Rhett may be my favorite Valley U hero yet! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Wallflower, by Jessica Prince

Title: Wallflower
Author: Jessica Prince
Series: Redemption

Contemporary Romance; Small Town Romance; Unrequited Love

She’d spent her entire life as a wallflower, hiding from the rest of the world.

Willow Thorne had gotten really good at blending in with the wallpaper. The shy, quiet little mouse was more comfortable spending her days in her protective little bubble. Then she met a big, burly mechanic who looked really good on a motorcycle and made her feel things she’d never felt before.

Gavin “Stone” Hendrix didn’t do commitment, and love was completely out of the question. After spending the first half of his life taking care of everyone else, he was done being the responsible one. Then he met a shy, nervous brunette who knocked him off his feet and made him question everything he thought he believed.

Willow brought out his protective instincts. Stone made her want to step out of her shell.

No one in a million years expected the hard-as-stone biker to fall for the wallflower, but the small town of Redemption was in for a major surprise.

**The Redemption series is a series of interconnected, standalone, small town romances.**

It had been a good day.

Actually, that was an understatement. It had been a great day. At least until I got to my dad’s house to go through his kitchen and see what all he needed, only to discover that Elaina had seriously downplayed the need for food in his house.

I’d played it off that I was totally fine for my father’s benefit as I stewed in my anger while making a grocery list that took up the front and back of the page.

By the time I got to the store, I was in serious need of an outlet, so I cued up the Pissed Chick playlist on my phone, stuffed earbuds in my ears, and got to work. I was halfway through shopping, Alanis Morissette wailing about how you oughta know in my ears when I rounded the corner and my cart crashed into someone else’s.

“Sorry, I—” The rest of the words died in my throat when I looked up and saw the cart I’d plowed into belonged to none other than Stone himself, the very man I’d been thinking about nonstop since my talk with Lark earlier that morning. “Stone,” I said on a gasp, sucking back the air that my lungs had expelled at the mere sight of him. “Hi.”

He said something I couldn’t hear over the music ringing in my ears.

I gave him an apologetic smile and yanked the buds out of my ears. “Sorry, I didn’t hear you. What was that?”

The song had just reached the chorus, the volume so loud it carried several feet, and I could tell from the grin on his face that he definitely heard it. “Wow. Didn’t take you for an Alanis fan,” he said in that gravelly rasp that always made my skin tingle and pressure build between my thighs. What could I say? The man gave great voice. I didn’t know if male phone sex operators were a thing or not, but if they were, he could make a freaking fortune.

“Oh, uh, yeah. Sometimes. I have a playlist I like to listen to it when someone’s made me ragey.”

On cue, the song ended, and the next queued up; this time, it was Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name.”

His eyes went big at the sound of it. “You’re just full of surprises, mouse.”

Listen to Willow’s Pissed Chick Playlist!

SunnyShelly’sReview:4Stars

I have been a Jessica Prince reader for a few years now, so I have known Gavin “Stone” Hendrix from way back in the Civil Corruption series. I was so happy when he moved back to Redemption and we got him in this series, and I couldn’t wait to see which heroine would bring this stone-cold guy to his knees. Stone and Willow’s story was everything I wanted for them!

So we have Stone, who saw his mom go through guys like she went through cigarettes, and after she pawned off his little sister Shane on him when he was a teenager, Stone swore he’d never be in a committed relationship because he was so burnt out from having to take the responsibility of caring for his little sister. But then sweet, shy Willow crashes into his life, and all of those protective instincts flare up and he doesn’t know what to do with himself. I loved that while Willow’s life was in the crapper, she kept her head held high and made things work. She was not the damsel in distress that Stone assumed she was, and I loved how strong she is! I also hated her sisters fiercely until the very end of the book. How selfish of them to just let her be the one caring for their ailing father because she’s not married!

Many of JP’s books have some element of danger involved, where the H has to rescue the h. That wasn’t the case with Wallflower. This time, it’s a family issue that arises where Stone steps up and helps Willow, cementing their relationship and showing him that he does know how to be a good boyfriend. Through it all, Willow undergoes an amazing transformation, not only with her clothes and makeup makeover, but with her family. She begins to stand up for herself with her sisters and with Stone, and I loved how much she grew as a person.

This book is a super slow burn — aside from a kiss or two, nothing happens until the last quarter or so of the story. And for fans of the Civil Corruption series, there’s a really nice nod to the character of Will, when Stone and Lyla share a phone call on the anniversary of his death.

Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. That’s why God created central air, after all.

Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boy–she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.

In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. Not that she’d expect a boy to understand.

Jessica has been writing since she was a little girl, but thankfully grew out of drawing her own pictures for her stories before ever publishing her first book. Because an artist she is not.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Pretty Boy D, by Rachel Jonas & Nikki Thorne

#𝗣𝗿𝗲-𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆!

BLURB

Dane Golden—Best friend. Temptation in football cleats. Roommate?

I’m screwed.

His followers don’t call him Pretty Boy D for nothing. The guy is, literally, God’s gift to women. I should know. I’ve watched chicks throw themselves at him since puberty.

Sharing his loft should be simple. Easy. But shortly after I settle in, we realize being “just friends” was so much easier when we weren’t sleeping under the same roof.

Seven years of thinking we had this down to a science goes out the window the night Dane sees my “Never Have I Ever” list. Now, he’s on a mission to help me cross off the top four items. Some of which aren’t quite as innocent as he’d expect.

What he’s proposing will break the rules we agreed to when I first came to stay here. He wants me to give in, to let my guard down and face my feelings for once. At least, that’s what that wicked look in his eyes and the mounting heat between us suggests.

This isn’t how I imagined being roommates would go. But a girl can only stare temptation in its green eyes for so long and not weaken.

My best friend wants to have his way with me and, right or wrong… I think I might let him.

***

Pretty Boy D is a full-length standalone novel. This book can absolutely be read on its own, but when you’re done, it’s recommended that you check out more from the Golden triplets and Joss in the complete enemies-to-lovers trilogy, KINGS OF CYPRESS PREP.

Do you enjoy the frustratingly hot push and pull of a good friends-to-lovers or roommates-to-lovers romance? Then you’ll love getting to know Dane and Joss. Due to adult themes and sexual situations, this one’s only for the 18+ crowd. Expect an HEA and no trigger warnings needed.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

Pretty Boy D was… pretty good, but I guess I was expecting more from Dane and Joss crossing over from friends to more after getting to know them in the first Golden Boys books. What occurs between them is perfectly fine friends-to-lovers trope, but they were kinda lacking that *oomph* that I got from Blue and West in the first books of this series.

There were some miscommunications between Dane and Joss that had me shaking my head. They were best friends for so long first, and then she jumped to a conclusion about him being with other girls and didn’t confront him? I didn’t buy it.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read, but I just felt it didn’t pack the same punch as West’s books did. Maybe I expected too much? It’s not necessary to have read the previous books in this connected series to enjoy Pretty Boy D, but check them out anyway!

When a psychic tells you who your soulmate is when you are a teenager, are you destined to live your life searching for that person? And what happens when things don’t work out the way the psychic vision says they would? Are you fated to live one person?

My Greatest Mistake was wildly entertaining. I loved the journey that Zara went through in finding her Mr. Right!

Zara and her beau are both fantastic characters, well-written with a well-plotted storyline. I loved their meet-cute, the banter between them, how their relationship blossomed and then blew up, and the big makeup scene. I ate it up!

This is the start to a new series by T. Gephart, and she’s set up a great cast of supporting players here. I’m already invested in Belle, and can’t wait to see who her perfect match will be.

Meet T. Gephart

T Gephart is a USA Today and International bestselling author from Melbourne, Australia.
With an approach to life that is somewhat unconventional, she prefers to fly by the seat of her pants rather than adhere to some rigid roadmap. Her lack of “plan” has resulted in a rather interesting and eclectic resume, which reads more like the fiction she writes than an actual employment history. She’d tell you all about it, but the statute of limitations hasn’t expired yet. But all those crazy twists and turns have led her to a career she loves–writing romantic comedy.
When she isn’t filling pages with sassy and sexy characters with attitude, she’s living her own reality show in the ‘burbs of Melbourne with her American husband, two teenage children, and her fur child–Woodley.
She loves adventure, to laugh, travel, and strives to live her life to the fullest.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Rent-A-Husband, by Everly Ashton

Release Date: July 8

When Camila Wright hired me to fix a few things around her house I didn’t expect to find myself swindled into a fake relationship with her.

Sure, my company is called Rent-A Husband but that’s not what people actually hire me for.

But when I find her elbow deep in a tub of ice cream with tears running down her face how can I turn down her proposition?

Suddenly a fake relationship becomes a fake marriage that we have to keep up all summer. Which is all fine and good except for the part where we both agreed not to let anything ‘real’ creep into our arrangement.

But then certain parts of me start to crave certain parts of her and things become even more complicated because we both have our own reasons for wanting what we have to remain make-believe only.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I’ve read a few books by Everly Ashton ever since she made her debut earlier in 2021, and they are always enjoyable. Cami and Lucas are wildly adorable, and this slow-burn, fake relationship/fake marriage romcom was full of laughs, tender moments, and all sorts of swoon.

Anyone who reads this trope knows how a fake relationship/fake marriage is going to turn out. But Everly Ashton made the journey for Cami and Lucas so fun. Their chemistry is sizzling, and with every misstep along the way, I just wanted to shake some sense into them!

As much as I loved Lucas as a book boyfriend, I adored his big, loud family more. Rent-A-Husband is the start of a new series by Everly Ashton, and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the Abbott brothers fall in love!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Crazy In Love is a standalone romance set in the same world as SL Scott’s Never Got Over You and The One I Want. This time around, we get Harrison and Tatum’s story, who are the best friends of Nick and Natalie from NGOY and met the same night in Catalina. The book begins with that long-ago one night stand — swoon! — and then picks up four years later, in New York City, where Harrison is now living.

Needless to say, Harrison and Tatum haven’t exactly gotten along the last four years when they’ve seen one another. He really thought they had a connection that night in Catalina and was willing to try long-distance. Tatum claimed she only wanted a one-night stand, but then felt stupid that Harrison never called her after she slipped her number into his pocket. Of course, there ended up being a reason why he never called her, but she didn’t know that and has spent the last four years hating the guy she really was starting to fall for that first night they met.

While I liked the journey Tatum and Harrison went on to get to their HEA, I didn’t love it the same way I loved N&N. I don’t know why. Crazy In Love is a delicious story, full of swoony moments, heartache, makeups and breakups. But it just didn’t have the same punch-in-the-gut feeling for me that NGOY did. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed Tatum and Harrison together as a couple, and they both showed a lot of growth individually and together by the end of this story. I would still recommend it, but start with NGOY. Because getting to catch up with N&N was even better after having read their story!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Fine Print, by Lauren Asher

The Fine Print by Lauren Asher is now live!

Rowan
I’m in the business of creating fairy tales.
Theme parks. Production companies. Five-star hotels.
Everything could be all mine if I renovated Dreamland.
My initial idea of hiring Zahra was good in theory, but then I kissed her.
Things spiraled out of control once I texted her using an alias.
By the time I realized where I went wrong, it was too late.
People like me don’t get happy endings.
Not when we’re destined to ruin them.

Zahra
After submitting a drunk proposal criticizing Dreamland’s most expensive ride, I should have been fired.
Instead, Rowan Kane offered me a dream job.
The catch? I had to work for the most difficult boss I’d ever met.
Rowan was rude and completely off-limits, but my heart didn’t care.
At least not until I discovered his secret.
It was time to teach the billionaire that money couldn’t fix everything.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

The Fine Print was quite an enjoyable workplace, grumpy/sunshine boss romance! In the wake of his grandfather’s death, Rowan has to serve as the director of the family’s Dreamland theme park for 6 months in order to claim his inheritance and then whatever other position he wants in the family’s corporation. But this grumpy hero doesn’t count on a ray of sunshine in the princess hair salon to be the bane of his existence — or his soulmate. Zahara, meanwhile, can’t believe that the grumpy grandson whom her beloved boss spoke so highly about is the same icy man stalking the halls and making her life miserable. She gets her dream job as a Dreamland Creator as a result of Rowan’s taking over the park, and as they work together on reimagining one of the park’s iconic rides, they grow closer and romance blooms. But at what cost? Has Zahara just been a pawn in his endgame to get what he really wants?

I liked the push and pull between these characters. Rowan is all icy cold because of daddy issues, and there is a really lovely scene where he finally confesses his background to her and shows some real vulnerability. Which made me hate him again when he then breaks things off with Rowan because he never wanted to fall in love and have a relationship. She really makes him grovel once he admits to being scared of love, and I appreciated that she wasn’t a doormat. Zahara stood her ground, and is as feisty as they come. Especially when she told off Rowan’s dad, Seth! Loved that scene!

I loved the behind-the-scenes peek at the theme park — clearly a ripoff of the mouse house conglomerate, but I ate up all that cheesiness and how the park and characters and the subsidiaries played into Zahara and Rowan’s story.

The Fine Print is a series starter for the Dreamland Billionaires brothers, and I can’t wait to see what comes next for this family. This is the first book I’ve read by Lauren Asher, and I will definitely be on the lookout for the subsequent books!

Our banter is addicting, and nothing I do or say will make him change his mind. But when his mind becomes focused solely on me, I run.

I can’t afford to give my heart away again. Not when I’m barely surviving with the broken one I have.
I have walls up for a reason. Reasons that are none of his business, but Easton is used to getting what he wants. And when he decides he wants me, I’m not sure I’ll survive it.

Lexi Heart entered my life like an arrogant, bossy, she-devil in heels, and I can’t get her out of my head.
She’s always ten steps ahead, and I have to admit, I’m intrigued. With every lash of her sharp tongue, she puts me in my place. But when I peel back the layers of her tough girl exterior, I see the broken shell she’s hiding, and my own walls come crashing down.

We quickly learn that what happens in Vegas doesn’t stay there, and I know I’m done for. I want this girl in every sense of the word, but can I convince her to take a chance on us? Or will the damage from her past be too much, even for true love?

Join Easton and Lexi in their highly emotional journey to a happily ever after. One Little Mistake is an enemy to lovers, accidental marriage romance that will draw you in and refuse to let you go.

Excerpt

My phone vibrates next to me, and I can all but guarantee it’ll be one of the girls. Or both of them. Lanie, Julia, and I all grew up in the tiny town of Burke Hollow, Vermont. They, and my grandmother, GG, are the only constants in my life. Glancing down, I see I’m right.

Lanie: Kick butt today at work, chica! Luvs!

Julia: She means kick ass and take names. You’ve got this!

Julia: Luvs.

Their confidence in me is comforting, but it doesn’t shake off my nerves.

Lexi: Thanks, guys. Luv you both.

Julia: Just throwing this out there … East is pretty hot! (winky face emoji)

Lanie: They would look so cute together, wouldn’t they?

Jesus Christ.

If they knew what I’ve been through, they would understand. My heart isn’t up for grabs, and it won’t ever be again. My boyfriend finder is broken beyond repair. Or maybe it never worked to begin with, since I’ve only ever chosen losers.

Lexi: Don’t start. That isn’t an option. Not now, not ever. Do you not remember my choice in men almost got me killed?

Lanie: …

Julia: You can’t blame yourself for Miles. You couldn’t have known, but I will say this: both Lanie and I found love when we had sworn it off. You never know when it will strike.

Lexi: I do. Never. Love is a choice, and it’s one I’m choosing not to make again.

Lanie: Oh, Lexi. It’s cute how you think you can control it.

Lexi: Whatever. I have to get going, or I’ll be late. Luvs.

Lanie: Luvs.

Julia: Kick his ass. Then maybe kiss it better! (Winky face kissing emoji) Luvs!

I don’t respond because Julia has no filter. Her responses will only get worse if I encourage her. Instead, I pack up the lunch I made and head out the door, only to run face-first into a human wall.

“Leo,” I grumble. Ashton, the youngest Westbrook, decided I need to have round-the-clock security. Freaking Ash. The only reason I didn’t argue is I’m pretty sure he does some messed-up shit with super-spy Loki.

Leo is my day guy, and his job just got boring as hell. Realizing I never asked him what he would do all day while I sat at a desk, I stare at him.

“Something wrong, Ms. Heart?” His voice always sounds so clinical.

Tilting my head to the side, I observe him. “What are you going to do all day?”

“What I do every day, ma’am. Watch over you.”

“Oh, hell to the no! Do not call me ma’am.” I jab my finger into his chest as I speak. “I’m not old enough for that shit. For the last time, it’s Lexi. Call me Lexi or Lex. Jesus, even ‘girl’ would be better than ma’am.”

He doesn’t answer. The only acknowledgment I get is a quick nod of his head as he steps out of the way so I can lock the door. This is going to be a long day, and I already feel a migraine coming on.

We climb into the car, and the driver takes off. My girls married into some rich ass families, but I begrudgingly admit they’re amazing. I will never say that to Preston, though. I’m having a hard enough time separating them and their money from the wealth and cruelty I knew when I was with Miles.

Leaning back, I close my eyes, but the car pulls to a stop all too quickly, and I hear Leo exit the car.

Well, shit. The commute took less than five minutes. Leo opens my door, and I force myself to exit. I’m not sure what I expected, but the building before me emblazoned with ‘The Westbrook Group’ was not it. Maybe it’s because Preston always presents himself as the playboy. Surely, he’s doing something right if he is keeping a multi-billion dollar cooperation running successfully.

Maybe I’m not giving the guy enough credit. Lanie told me Preston recently rebranded Westbrook Enterprises into The Westbrook Group to better encompass the partnership with his brothers. If they can rebrand something like that, there’s no reason I can’t reinvent myself to be the best damn assistant Easton Westbrook has ever seen. Right

With Leo shadowing me, I make my way to the security desk and check-in.

“Welcome, Ms. Heart. You’ll be on the twenty-first floor. Your badge will allow entry from the elevator.” The guard is a sweet, older man whose name tag says Sam.

“Thank you, Sam.”

He smiles kindly, and I’m on my way, not at all sure I’m ready to deal with the Westbrook Beast.

The elevator dings as it comes to a stop. Taking a deep breath, I exit the car and glance around, confused. The place is empty and dark. With tentative steps, I inch forward. Ever since Miles held me captive, I’ve struggled with dark, enclosed spaces, and I hate myself for it. I should be stronger, so I force myself forward.

“I’m safe. This place is safe. Leo is right behind me,” I silently chant.

“Ms. Heart?” Leo’s voice calls out from behind, causing my heart to stop.

With a fist on my chest, I turn. At least he appears to feel bad for startling me.

“You are safe, Ms. Heart. They locked this building down tighter than Fort Knox. I believe Mr. Westbrook’s office is to the left.”

“Th-Thank you, Leo.”

He smiles and ushers me forward. As I round the corner, light spills out into the hallway from a single door at the end. Stealing a breath, I force myself forward, not really sure why I’m so nervous. Reaching the open door, I raise my hand to knock when a deep masculine voice cuts me off.

“Glad to see timeliness is a priority. Come in.”

I can’t tell if he’s being an ass or genuinely complimenting me, so I keep the sass to myself. Entering the room, I realize he has yet to look up from his desk. How the hell did he know I was here?

“I have excellent hearing,” he states, finally lifting his gaze to mine, and it knocks the air from my lungs. Fighting to keep my face neutral, I swallow, forcing the trapped air to leave. His voice softens for the briefest moment when he says, “You are always safe here, Ms. Heart.”

“Thank you,” is all I say. I don’t need Easton Westbrook becoming some arrogant Prince Charming. Been there, done that.

He narrows his eyes as he considers me. Then, as quickly as it came, the warmth in his voice evaporates. “I expect a lot from my employees. I’m here every day at five-thirty a.m. working out in the gym because that’s when I work through most of my problems. HR told me I could no longer force my employees to be here that early, but I will require you here by seven a.m. Monday through Friday. We work long hours.”

The way he’s glaring at me, as if I’m a charity case, makes me insane. My inner bitch is rising, and the longer I stare at his stupid, scowling face, the more I want to set her free.

“I’m not afraid of hard work, Easton.” My indignation is showing, and I make no attempt to hide it.

I swear his lip twitches before he locks it down into the firm, straight line I’m thinking is forced.

“Right. I know we are in the precarious situation of having a connection outside of work, Lexi.” He says my name as if testing out a new hot sauce, and it makes me smile. “But Mr. Westbrook will suffice here in the office. I have a laptop and phone for you. A desk will be here in a couple of days, but you’ll sit in that general vicinity.” Easton gestures across the room.

Is he fucking kidding me with the Mr. Westbrook bullshit?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

This is the first book in a new series, but there are interconnected characters with Avery Maxwell’s last series (Broken Hearts) — including Lexi’s entire backstory. I liked the overall theme and story of book, but the details of Lexi and Easton’s relationship (or really, lack thereof) fell flat for me.

I empathized with what she’d lost, but I had a hard time really getting behind her as a broken heroine not knowing the details of what took place with her previously. I felt that way too much was glossed over, and there were conversations between characters that left me clueless. Were they talking about past events, or was it poor writing? I don’t know because One Little Mistake is the first book I’ve read by Avery Maxwell.

I also felt like there were too many cases of being told, not shown — like the “epic meltdown” that Lexi has on the porch. A few sentences of a flashback weren’t enough to satisfy me with that. I liked Lexi as a heroine. I liked East as the hero. I loved their grumpy/sunshine combo. They both have trauma in their pasts, and I loved and how they both learned to heal from their scars with one another. They both had some serious baggage to work through, and their time apart as they did that was my favorite part of the book. I could see them working on their issues, and how they both grew from doing so. Also, I liked the chaos of the extended Westbrook family. But there were too many moments that had me going back to reread pages, thinking I’d missed something. Does this book run concurrently with others? Is it meant to be read in order? I have no idea!

One Little Mistake is tagged as a stand-alone, but I felt like there were too many pieces I was missing. There were teases set up for future books, which definitely caught my interest. Especially Ashton. So I will look for more from this series in the future, despite only giving One Little Mistake 3.5 stars. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

About Avery
Avery Maxwell is an American Romance Author who loves wine, sexy stories, pizza, and her family.

Avery is a hot mess of a mom to four wildly sweet mini-humans and two fur babies. She spends far too much time in her pj’s and trips over herself multiple times a day. Accident-prone is probably a fair assessment.

Having grown up in small-town Vermont, Avery often jokes about being the most naïve person in the room. Luckily, she’s used that small-town charm to write character-driven contemporary romances that have you laughing one minute, and crying the next.

When she isn’t refereeing (three little boys require a lot of whistle blowing), or cuddled up with her real-life Prince Charming, you can find her tucked away with a bottle of wine (because those steamy scenes don’t write themselves!), or coaching her daughter’s basketball team.

Avery now lives in North Carolina where she brings life, love, and a happily ever after to every character she writes.
