Sunny Shelly’s Review: When We Met, by Marni Mann

When We Met by Marni Mann is now live!

If you knew beyond all doubt that one chance encounter would change the course of your future, what would you choose?

There’s nothing like a spring day in Boston to make your heart sing. I’m out with my girls, having drinks in a bar, enjoying the bright pulse of our beautiful city, when I see Caleb. The second my eyes meet his, I know this is the moment when everything will change. All I have to do is choose him.

I meet Whitney on the worst day of my life. I’ve always been an adrenaline junkie, but I never knew how fast things could change. Her soft gaze melts my cynicism, makes me forget the bitter man I was becoming. She makes me want to be the version of myself that I see in her eyes. All she has to do is choose this life.

When We Met takes Whitney and Caleb on the ride of their lives, hitting every note on the scale of beauty and tragedy along the way. USA Today best-selling author Marni Mann will make you question everything you thought you knew about love and fate, and this unforgettable story will leave you certain that destiny always finds a way.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

This book. Holy crap. I read this instead of watching the Superbowl and I didn’t care. It was fantastic. When We Met is a fantastic exploration of how one moment, one choice, can change your life. If you knew that one encounter was going to change your life forever, for good or for bad, what would you opt to do?

This book is told in dual POVS — one part from Caleb’s POV and one part from Whitney’s — with Whitney’s best friend/roommate Emily bookending it with the prologue and epilogue from her POV. I wasn’t sure where the story was going to go when I read the prologue, but I was there for the ride. Both parts of this book are equally amazing, although they tell very different stories with Caleb and Whitney’s journey. And then I got to the end of Part 2, and gasped. Was that it? Impossible.

The epilogue tied it all back together, and it’s one of those chapters that leaves you really thinking over what you just read.

Whitney and Caleb are wonderful characters. There’s an immediate connection, they bring out the best in one another, and change each other for the better. He’s a workaholic before meeting her, a financial whiz and adrenaline junkie who only escapes the office when he goes off exploring the world. She’s a hospital nurse who works herself to the bone in memory of her brother, who she could not save. She’s miserable and feels like she’s lost herself in the hospital, but being with Caleb shows her that there is so much more she can do with her life.

Don’t read too many reviews about When We Met. Go into it blind, because it is phenomenal. It is set in April 2013 around the Boston Marathon bombing, so that could be a trigger for some readers. But Caleb and Whitney’s journey is a marvelous one that I won’t soon forget.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Justin and Tessa’s story was a great addition to the Hot in the City series! We’ve gotten to know Justin (aka Tibbs) as the playboy serial dater in the other books, and I love when that kind of guy is brought to his knees. And I appreciated that the woman who catches his eye at the bar that night is actually a colleague and someone he’s known for a while, but never saw in that light before the switch was flipped. And he fell hook, line and sinker.

Tessa is focused on her career and isn’t necessarily looking for a relationship either when she runs in to Justin that night at the bar. But some nights of hanging out turn into something deeper, and before either of them know it, lines have been blurred and crossed.

And then there’s a doozy of a plot twist. I honestly didn’t see it coming, and I really liked the way that T Gephart wrote that obstacle. It could have been a cliche, but Tessa and Justin find a workaround, and it was mature, respectful, and made everyone’s lives better in the end.

I really enjoyed this story! Between The Lines is part of a series with interconnected characters, but is a standalone. And having read the other books, it was nice to catch up a bit with some of those characters!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Hadley & Grace, by Suzanne Redfearn

The author of In an Instant delivers a heart-pounding and emotional roller-coaster ride of self-discovery in the tradition of Thelma and Louise.

Needing to escape her abusive marriage, Hadley flees with her two kids, knowing it might be her only chance. A woman who can’t even kill a spider, Hadley soon finds herself pushed to the limits as she fights to protect her family.

Grace, new mother of baby Miles, desperately wants to put her rough past behind her for good, but she finds it impossible when her path crosses with Hadley’s, and her quest for a new start quickly spirals out of control and turns into a terrifying flight for survival.

Stronger together than apart, the two find their fates inextricably entwined, and as the danger closes in, each must decide how much she is willing to risk for the other.

A powerful story of self-discovery, Hadley and Grace is the heart-racing tale of two women facing insurmountable odds, racing to stay one step ahead of the trouble that is chasing them, and discovering new kinds of love and family along the way.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I loved this modern-day Thelma & Louise story!

Hadley and Grace are both such wonderful characters, and their journey together left me flipping the pages, reading just one more chapter, just one more chapter… These women are strangers, but with a common connection, and that sends them off on a road trip that neither of them will ever forget.

This book is one big comedy of errors as Hadley and Grace set out on a road trip — well, it’s more like run — with their three kids in tow. Through the ups and downs of their journey, Hadley and Grace form an unbreakable friendship, and the kids become a sort of blended family. This book is a wonderful story of friendship and strength.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Away Game, by Harlow Layne

 Release Date: February 4

The plan was to move away and never look back.

Get away from him, out from under my father’s disapproving stare, and start a new life in Willow Bay.

It was supposed to be my fresh start, but instead my past followed me.

The one thing I desired and couldn’t have.

Weston Jackson.

I hated how he made me feel things that I couldn’t give into without turning my world upside down.

I wanted to make him pay.

For the way my father now looked at me. For the way I saw myself.

But most of all… for wanting him the way I did.

This is a full-length high school and college enemies-to-lovers and new adult romance with high angst, suspense, and gutting emotion. It’s book one in the Willow Bay series that will have interlinking storylines. Away Game can be read as a standalone and starts off a four-book planned series. This is the only MM story. The others are MF.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

Since I’ve recently been on a bully romance kick, I figured Away Game was going to check all the boxes. And it kind of did, but kind of didn’t.

What I liked about the book was Fin’s story arc, and how he came into his own, and the journey of self-discovery that he goes on. I wouldn’t say that this book was necessarily about him discovering his sexuality; it was more about him discovering who he really is, once he got out from underneath his father’s oppressive thumb. There’s a great enemies-to-friends-to-lovers thread between Fin and West, and their romance was kind of a side story that took place after these two sports rivals develop a strong and true friendship.

But… I wanted MORE from Fin and West as a couple. I felt like I was missing what made them click, what connected them, the little moments that two people in a relationship share. And why did Fin hate West so much? I didn’t feel like that was explored or really answered. And bully romances hinge on that. And I felt it was missing.

Away Game has some really nice moments as West and Fin develop a friendship and more, but it wasn’t the page-turner for me that I was expecting it to be. This book is the start to a new series, and I want to check out the additional Willow Bay books to come, because I liked the supporting characters. I let them fade away into the background as my eyes travel around, shamelessly looking around for him. I breathe a sigh of relief when my eyes find him sitting at another table talking to his friends. I wasn’t expecting to meet a guy like him on my first day here. I wasn’t expecting anyone like him at all.
My body goes from ice cold to super-hot in a split second, like a rollercoaster. He is relaxing and having an in-depth conversation with whoever is sitting in front of him. His eyes look around in a break in the conversation, taking in his surroundings. He looks over my way and then back. Then he stops and his eyes slide back to mine. I can’t breathe. His stare is holding me in my place. I can’t even think. I just stare back at him like a dazed animal. Slowly his mouth begins to move again, carrying on the conversation like he wasn’t trapped in a staring contest with me. Never taking his eyes off of me, never blinking. His stare is controlled and also purposeful. My body heat rises so high, I know my cheeks are flaming red at this point.
I watch as the person across from him speaks, but he still hasn’t taken his eyes off me. I need to look away, but I can’t. Wait… Am I flirting? Yes. No. Maybe? I try to swallow the rock in my throat.
Then his lips pull up into a grin that brings a shiver over my body. It’s not a flirty smile, it’s pleasant, welcoming, and it has my head spinning.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

I have such mixed feelings about this story. I glossed over grammatical errors and some cringy dialog like Ryan calling Cassie “Girl” — no, just no. But I couldn’t look past plot points like Ryan kissing Cassie hours after he fooled around with Whitney while thinking of Cassie. That’s effed up, dude. And the whole group just forgot that Cassie was in the house when they headed to the lake? Even Ryan, who had literally just left her to shower in his bathroom after that previously mentioned kiss? WTF? He tells her he’d take her virginity whenever she wants, but then pushes her away. He sleeps with his crazy ex who broke his heart because he doesn’t feel like he deserves to be with Cassie? It’s not cheating since he dumped Cassie first, but it just felt icky. Ryan runs so hot and cold, I got whiplash trying to keep up with his mood swings.

But there is much that I liked about Cassie and Ryan as characters, both dealing with scars and battling demons, and finding solace in the other. So I’m torn between not liking this book because of the rotten behavior and ignoring all of that because there really are some sweet moments.

This story is a slow burn friends to lovers romance, but while I felt the deep friendship that formed between Cassie and Ryan, I never felt that pull to ship them as a couple. Especially with his whoring around.

I think there is a lot of potential here with this new author, and I’m curious to see what she brings to the table in the rest of this series. We shall see…

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

In Between Forever was a really interesting look at a marriage in peril… Keely and Blake love each other fiercely, but infertility issues are driving a huge wedge between them. I thought Mika Jolie did a great job of exploring not just how Keely feels broken by the fact that they can’t conceive, but also how Blake feels like he is fighting the battle alone due to his wife’s depression.

There is a lot more to this story besides the fact that they are trying unsuccessfully to have a child. There is some family drama and health issues — and how, or if, Blake and Keely will be able to come out on the other side of it is just as much of this couple’s journey as is having a child.

I haven’t read any of the other Martha’s Way books, so there were some details about the backstory that I wasn’t fully aware of. I thought MJ did a good job at explaining that without me feeling lost. This group of friends is tight — a family by choice, even though some of them are related — and it was nice to see all of that support.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Straight Up is another great addition to Charity Farrell’s Twisted Fox series, and bridges the gap with her Blue Beech series since Cassidy is the youngest sister of Sierra, Kyle, etc.

In Straight Up, we get to know Archer’s brother, Lincoln, better and learn how going to prison protecting his dad affected him. He’s trying to make an honest living working at his brother’s bar, and is keeping his nose clean. Then a spitfire named a Cassidy starts waitressing at Twisted Fox. No matter how much he tries to stay away from her, Linc is drawn to her magnetic personality, her sense of humor and kind heart.

Fresh off an arrest of her own when her boyfriend made her take the fall for his drug run, Cassidy is on a break from guys. So getting involved with Lincoln is the last thing she sets out to do. But there is a sizzle underneath their easy friendship, and despite her best efforts, Cass is falling fast.

You would think that Lincoln’s past would be the problem that comes between them. But it’s her past that does. Cassidy puts him in a really awkward position, and I understood both sides when she lashed out. I was glad to see that the resolution came quickly and wasn’t dragged on, because I loved these two together and wanted them to move past it!

Straight Up is a great friends to lovers romance. Cassidy and Lincoln have sizzling chemistry, a great friendship and really come to depend on one another. I was shipping them from the start!

We also catch up with the other couples, see Cohen and Jamie have their baby, and get a GREAT tease for Grace’s story!

Excerpt

“You want a goodbye, Hamilton?” I asked as the pain in my chest cracked and all the disappointment flowed out with a vengeance. What even was the truth anymore? Did he care about me? Did he think I wasn’t worth the effort?

He clenched his teeth, the move making his defined jaw harden into a sharp line. “I want a goodbye, Petal.” My heart cracked. I felt cheap. Used. I was done. Done with all of it. Done with the Beauregards. Done with the blackmail. Done with my mother’s guilt. My insecurities. I was done with him. Hamilton then choked out words that softened the blow. “I want you to live your life, Petal. I want you to be happy without me.”

I wrapped my legs around his middle and rolled us both over. Pressing him into the mattress, I shrugged out of my sleep tank and clawed at the soft fabric of his shirt. He quickly tore it from his body while kicking his boots off to the ground. “Fuck you, Hamilton,” I whispered before scraping my teeth along his chest. I savored him. I fought with him. My fingers undid the button to his pants, and he slid them down.

“Love you too, Petal,” he said in a reverent tone, his voice so soft that I almost didn’t hear it. It was the most tender sound. “I bet you’re drenched. You still want me. Even when I hurt you, your pussy aches for me.”

Shame filled me. This was some sick kink for Hamilton. He liked knowing he could still have my body after destroying my heart. I raged.

I groaned. “I want your cock. I want your goodbye. I want to get off so I can kick you out of my apartment and out of my life.”

We undressed like each scrap of fabric between us was a weapon. He bucked, I pressed him into the mattress. I lined up my sex with his and watched his lips part as I slowly slid down and began riding him. With him fully inside me, he groaned low and slow. I bent over to whisper in his ear. “Enjoy it while you can, because I’m done.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Twisted Legacy Duet is complete, and it was fantastic! Thorns and Forgiveness is crazy, it’s twisted, it’s emotional, it’s intense. Much like Vera, I equally loved and hated Hamilton at times! Thorns and Forgiveness is not a standalone; it is the page-turning conclusion to Bastards and Scapegoats, which needs to be read first.

While I felt that B&S was very much Vera’s story, we get a lot more of Hamilton’s side in T&F. The dude is messed up! Broken, vulnerable, and messed up! What started out as a revenge plot to expose his corrupted dad and brother turned into something so much more when he fell for Vera along the way. He is miserable without her, but can’t be WITH her in order to protect her. Of course, that doesn’t last very long, and Vera and Hamilton work together to bring down his wicked family.

There are so many twists and turns in this book. And my heart broke for Hamilton. All that he went through at the hands of his dad and brother, and how desperate he was for a place where he felt like he fit in. The Beauregard family is seriously messed up, and it’s a wonder that Hamilton had a shred of decency in there!

If you read B&S, then you know what you want out of T&F. And I felt like I got the conclusion I was looking for when it came to Vera and Hamilton’s love story. It’s sexy and spicy, full of lust and love, and an incredible thread of these stubborn soulmates being perfect for each other.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Laces, by Tempi Lark

 Release Date: January 31
Welcome to Hawthorne Asylum.
Welcome to hell.
This place isn’t run by the doctors who make you talk or the orderlies who force you to swallow your pills.
It belongs to them, to the Infamous Four.
Tabloids, talk shows, documentaries—their faces have been plastered everywhere. Not because of their impressive rap sheets, but because of how they look.
And when I arrive, they take notice. Especially their king: Lincoln “Laces” Caster.
He’s dark and disturbed.
He’s controlling and possessive.
Exactly the kind of boy I should stay away from if I want to clear my name and get out of here.
*LACES is not intended for readers under seventeen. This book does have RH elements, strong language/cursing, and triggering scenes (that might not be suitable for everybody). Laces is a slow burn that builds toward intimate scenes as the series progresses. This is book one in the Boys of Hawthorne Asylum series.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Hmm… This book was an interesting ride. Gambrielle has been committed to an insane asylum for young adults after being accused of murdering her sister. Really, it was her powerful DA stepfather who did it, and he had Gambrielle locked up to keep his deed from being exposed. Her one goal while at Hawthorne is to get a weekend pass so she can look for more evidence and clear her name while honoring her sister’s memory. Along the way, she meets the crew who run Hawthorne — not the medical staff, but the super-hot patients. And their leader, Laces.

There’s an immediate connection between Laces and Gambrielle, and he’s not sure what to make of it since she’s feisty and not like the submissive girls he’s usually attracted to. I liked seeing this alpha come a little unhinged around this girl who has completely captivated him. And not unhinged mentally, but emotionally!

Tempi Lark is a new-to-me author, and I thought that Laces was very well-written, even if there were some holes in the story. Laces is short — only about 20 chapters, which I read was not the author’s original intent. But her plans for the book had to change due to the pandemic. That explains why I felt like I didn’t get to know Laces very well. There is so much I want to know about him and his backstory that just wasn’t explored. Hopefully the author will delve into that in the second book. I was also not expecting a cliffhanger ending. Way to dangle a carrot for the continuation of this story!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Don’t Kiss The Bride by Carian Cole

Don’t Kiss the Bride by Carian Cole is now live!

I guess you could say I was a damsel in distress, and he was my knight in shining armor.

But more accurately, I was a girl with a lot of bad luck, and he was a guy with a lot of muscles and tattoos.

Jude “Lucky” Lucketti wasn’t just a sexy, brooding construction worker. He was my own personal hero who seemed to be in all the right places at the right times. Like when my car broke down and I needed a ride home, and when I face planted on the sidewalk right in front of him and had to be taken to the emergency room.

Those weren’t exactly my best moments, but they were his.

We became friends, and it didn’t matter that he was sixteen years older than me. We had a lot in common—like our love of old rock music and vintage fast cars, and our aversion to relationships.

When he approached me with a crazy idea to help me out, I couldn’t say no.

The arrangement was supposed to be temporary. A marriage on paper and nothing else.

It should’ve been easy, but it wasn’t.

Because here I am, eighteen years-old, still in high school, and married to a man I was never supposed to fall in love with.

We had just one rule—no kissing the bride.

But we broke that rule, and it sealed our fate forever.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I signed up to read this book without knowing the title or what it was about. Risky, yes. But I was so captivated by the last (and only other) Carian Cole book I read that it was a chance I was willing to take. And Don’t Kiss The Bride was spectacular! Like Aunt Suzy, I was totally shipping Lucky and Sparkles!

This age-gap romance could have been creepy. Jude is 34, Skylar is 18. But he doesn’t come across as creepy at all, just wanting to do something to help out a young girl who reminded him of his sister. I found this emotional rollercoaster of a romance to be so well written, so captivating, so engaging. My heart broke for Skylar and the horrid condition she was living in. And Jude… he was a sweetheart underneath all of that ink and hair!

Despite their difference in age and stages in life, Sparkles and Lucky just clicked. They made each other better, and things were better for these two abandoned souls when they were together. It was hardly an easy ride for them, but I cried happy tears by the time I got to the end!

And the cameo appearance by Asher and the love advice he gave to Jude was awesome to read!
