Sunny Shelly’s Review: Kiss and Fake Up by Carrie Aarons

Kiss and Fake Up by Carrie Aarons is live!

This summer was supposed to be an escape from the city and the demons lurking within it. Too bad the minute I arrive at the beach house I’m sharing with friends, the guy I swore I’d never talk to again in my life walks through the door.

Now I’m not only stuck hiding out from an ex who won’t leave me alone, but with someone who screwed me over before he could even be considered an ex.

That’s right, two years ago Campbell Whitlock double booked me on our fourth date. As in, had a girl show up to the table where he was feeding me off his own fork and barely disguising it as foreplay. Meanwhile, my head and heart had been completely on board to make our relationship more serious.

But a leggy blonde foiled that plan, and I’ve hated him on sight since. The ex-Marine turned millionaire restauranteur didn’t even have the decency to follow me with an apology as I ran out of his own establishment.

It’s just my luck that I’m forced to room right next door to my nemesis, who couldn’t be acting more like a saint if he tried. And then the impossible happens; my ex hunts me down to deliver loaded threats and the fear I thought I’d left behind in Manhattan. Who is the only person to witness it? Campbell, of course.

His apology tour apparently extends to offering himself up as my fake boyfriend to scare off my stalker. While the plan is moronic and means having to spend more time with him, the danger I feel is real. Having a hulking, intimidating boyfriend, fake or not, might be exactly what I need.

With every passing day, pretend date, emotional gaze and midnight run-in, our relationship starts to feel less like a deal and more like something very similar to the connection I thought we had years ago. Even though I promised myself I’d never give him a second chance.

But what happens when the person protecting me starts to feel like the one I want to trust forever?
And how will I recover if his favor was done only to gain forgiveness, instead of a chance at falling in love?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Now that I have finished Kiss and Fake Up, I love the cover of this book even more! It perfectly captures everything that I love about Campbell and Heather! This book is set at the same Hamptons beach house as Love at First Fight, and has crossover characters, but Campbell and Heather’s fake relationship story is a standalone.

I really disliked Campbell after reading the prologue where he double books Heather on a date. How was Carrie Aarons going to make me like him? Seriously, not even halfway through the first chapter, I was hooked on this guy. He puts forth a tough exterior, but he is a troubled soul somewhat adrift. Lonely from a lack of love in his childhood, a failed Navy SEAL, cocky to cover up his vulnerability…. YES, PLEASE!

So two years after their failed attempt at dating, Heather and Campbell are spending the summer at their friends’ Montauk beach house. For Heather, it’s more than just a summer at the beach since she had a horrible breakup with a controlling ex. Who is now stalking her. Campbell offers to be her fake boyfriend for the summer to get her ex to back off, but he has an ulterior motive: He knows he made a mistake with her two years ago and is hoping that he can get back in her good graces and get a second chance to date her.

They fall into an easy routine as the lines of their fake relationship get blurry, and it’s not long before Campbell realizes that despite being a declared bachelor, a life with Heather wouldn’t be so bad. But can he convince Heather that his feelings for her are real? Will the danger of her crazy ex-boyfriend cast a shadow over any future they might have together?

I really adored this couple and how close they grew. How sweet he was of her when she needed him to play nurse. How much she realized she had the wrong impression of him and Campbell was so much more than the cocky restaurant owner he presents to the rest of the world. I devoured this book, and can see myself cracking it open again this summer because it is a perfect beach read complete with wonderful characters and a happily ever after.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Mrs. Degree by Sara Ney

Release Date: May 3

From USA TODAY Bestselling Author Sara Ney comes a new series about strong, single girls falling in love: accidentally.

I never thought I would get pregnant in college.

When I did, I thought leaving Jack Jennings was doing him a giant favor—he had a bright future ahead of him as a football star—the last thing he needed was me and a baby standing in his way of his dreams.

Honestly? I figured he would eventually forget about me.
I would raise our child in secret and watch Jack on television, and the pain of what I’d done to him would heal.
The last person I expected to see on my brothers doorstep seven years later was Jack; obviously, or I wouldn’t have answered it.
A superstitious athlete, dreams were keeping him awake at night that were preventing him from excelling on the field—dreams he was hoping I could make…disappear.
He looked so good. So much older.
Kind. Handsome.
Turns out, he hadn’t forgotten about me either, and he hadn’t put our past behind him.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

3.5 Stars

The Mrs. Degree is a secret baby, sports, second chance romance all rolled into one. Jack is one of the biggest NFL stars in the league, but he can’t seem to stop thinking about Penelope, the one that got away back when he was in college. When he’s in town for a game, he knocks on her brother’s door (a former NFL player, so at least there’s a connection there and Jack isn’t being a creepy stalker) — and is shocked when Pen answers. Jack is even more shocked to meet Penelope’s young daughter.

Over time, Jack gets to know his daughter, and Penelope tries to right the wrong that she made all those years ago. The connection between Jack and Pen is still there, and they put in the work to try to reconnect and get to know each other now, 7 years later. I loved how Jack forged a relationship with Skipper — she was just darling. But I never fell in love with Jack and Pen as a couple the way I wanted to.

I wish that Jack had been angrier about what Pen did to him. And I couldn’t rectify Penelope’s actions for ghosting him and never intending to tell him that she was pregnant — that is one of my pet peeves with the secret-baby trope. If Jack hadn’t tracked her down, I felt that Skipper never would have known her father. Despite this book being well written, that’s a hard pill for me to swallow with this trope, and made the difference for me in this book being a 4- or 5-star read. Admittedly, I did not read the previous book in this series, The Player Hater, which introduced Penelope and Skipper in Pen’s brother’s story. The Mrs. Degree is a standalone, but perhaps I wasn’t as connected as I could have been because I didn’t read book 1 first? I don’t know…. Maybe I will try again another time and see if Penelope can change my mind.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Goodbye Never by Prescott Lane

Goodbye Never by Prescott Lane is now live!

All the best love stories are tragic. Ours is no different.

Lennon is the woman who should have always been mine. The one that I let slip through my fingers time and time again. I was young, stupid, and arrogant enough to think love would wait.

Being in the Marines has taught me patience. The enemy never strikes when you expect it. Love is the same way.

And falling in love with your best friend requires a special type of patience.

So when tragedy strikes, the only thing I can do is be what I’ve always been to her — her best friend.

I’ve learned everything has a cost — even love. Lennon has paid dearly.

But I’m not about to let tragedy steal our happily ever after.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Man, I’d forgotten how much I love a good, angsty romance where the hero and heroine just can’t get on the same page with their feelings. Goodbye Never reminded me so much of Kandi Steiner’s A Love Letter to Whiskey, one of the great angsty romances of missed opportunities and unrequited love. Duke and Lennon have literally been best friends since they were in diapers, and have always been each other’s rock. There is so much history and love and friendship between Duke and Lennon, and this book is just one big ball of angst! Will they forever have each other in the friend zone? Will he ever realize how much he loves her and she loves him?

Goodbye Never is full of incredible twists and turns that left me vowing to “just read one more chapter.” I could not get enough of this wonderful, heartbreaking, inspiring story of missed moments, tragic losses, and realizing that tomorrow is never guaranteed. There is so much more I want to say about this breathtaking story, but I won’t. Do yourself a favor and just read it. You won’t be sorry.

Now that I’ve finished it, that cover gives me chills. This book packs such an emotional punch, I’m still not over it!
Goodbye for now.
Goodbye never.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Unlikely Date by Samantha Christy

Town playboy.
CEO extraordinaire.
Monumental prick.
And my blind date.
Unlikely Date, an all-new spicy single parent, contemporary romance from Amazon bestselling author Samantha Christy, is out now!

Tag Calloway is toxic. If you aren’t in his small inner circle of friends, you’re nothing.
An inconvenience at best.
And it’s just my luck that my first blind date—heck, my first date since ‘The Incident’––happens to be with him.
I’ve spent years hiding myself from men. From life. Wallowing in guilt and camouflaging my body.
I live for one reason. Gigi. The broken-condom accident who has become the singular light of my life.
Why did I let my friends talk me into this?
He’s the last person I should trust with my feelings. My body. My scars.

But when our night turns into something I never expected, common sense fails me and I fall hard, knowing this time, it won’t be my body that suffers gruesome damage, it will be my heart.

Read on for an excerpt!

“Let’s get it over with then,” she says, as if completely uninterested. “The next episode is one of my favorites.”
My eyes fall to her lips. The lips I watched spew words to two other men I wished were me. The pouty pink lips I’ve been imagining running up and down my cock for the last four hours. The lips I’d trade the Range for if they’d just whisper my name.
“Well?” she says impatiently, her mouth waiting like a question.
Fuck. I’m almost thirty goddamn years old. I’ve never been nervous about anything. I started my own business on a loan that could have bankrupted me. I double majored in college even though it meant pulling all-nighters and hiring tutors. I’ve slept with models, television actresses, and Brazilian beauties. Yet, right here, right now, in front of FlowerGirl529, my entire body wound like a bow string, I have fucking stage fright.
I clear my throat and set my drink down. I crack my knuckles and shift my weight. Her hazel eyes peer up at me. Waiting. Wanting. Maybe even challenging. And Tag Calloway never backs down from a challenge. I put a hand on the back of her neck and close the gap between us.
“Time to collect,” I say, just as my lips find hers.
Her eyes close, as do my own. This is a one-time thing and both of us know it. After today, this moment, this kiss, she’ll go back to being the sheepish flower shop owner, and I’ll continue being the CEO asshat everyone thinks I am.
Our lips brush together tentatively, the warmth of hers consuming me instantaneously. It’s nothing like I expected. Her lips don’t form a firm line, a barrier against which I’m not allowed to pass. Her mouth doesn’t stay shut. My tongue doesn’t have to force an entrance. Her lips part willingly and invite me inside. And when our tongues meet, it’s fervent, greedy, explosive; each of us fighting for something we don’t even know exists. Neither of us wins. Or we both do, it’s hard to tell.
I’ve never been a big fan of kissing. Now I feel it’s landed in my top ten and is quickly moving its way up the list. My cock protests to the order change and is reminding me painfully that he will steadfastly hold on to the number one spot.
She tastes of wicked temptation and sinful delight, and it has every cell in my body erupting with desire. With the way I’m panting, I pray the taste of cigarettes is no longer on my breath. It’s an invocation that’s never crossed my mind before now.
A mewl escapes her. My cock thinks it’s all for him and thickens further. I tell him to fuck off, her lips are all mine. He can wait his turn. It’s a turn he knows he’ll never have, and he’s pissed. He throbs against my boxer briefs, begging to be seen. Felt. Paid attention to.
I give into him, but only so much as in I walk her back to the wall and press myself against her. There’s no way she doesn’t feel my hardness through our robes. She doesn’t protest. She does the opposite and deepens the kiss, exploring my mouth and sucking on my tongue. My cock thinks it’s a preview and is happy with this. For the moment anyway. And this time, a sound escapes me.
She holds me against her, hands running across my shoulders, my back, even the top of my ass as she kisses me with toe-curling determination. I move her head to the side, exposing her neck, and let my lips devour her jaw, the supple skin below her ear, her collarbone. The peachy scent of her hair invades my nose, driving my want for her.
My hands cup her face and move along her jawline back into her hair as I pull her lips to mine. I expect her to pull away, say the kiss is over. One kiss is all we bargained for. She doesn’t. Her swollen lips part for mine, and once again, our tongues engage in battle. I fear it’s a fight that’s going to leave both of us in ashes.
I suck her lower lip. She bites mine. Our chests mash together, leaving me unsure if the thud I feel is her heartbeat or mine. Maybe it’s both and they’re beating in sync. Her breathing is heavy and ragged, her chest rising and falling as if she’s running a marathon. I should know. I’m running the same race.
I taste her again, sucking her tongue. Needing more. Needing everything she’ll give me.
There’s a loud noise in the hall, and Maddie pulls back. I want to go out there and kill the fucker who put an end to this. I take half a step back, staring down into her eyes as I wonder if the kiss rendered them glassy, or the alcohol.
“I, uh…” She ducks under my arm and walks to the mini fridge. She downs a full bottle of water before sitting on the bed.
My balls remind me they’re so blue they’re about to explode. I thumb to the bathroom door. “I’m gonna…”
Whack off? Take a cold shower? Fucking cry?

SUNNY SHELLY’S REVIEW: 5 STARS

Man, I really wanted to hate Tag after that introduction, but I ended up falling in love with the guy by the end of Unlikely Date. Maddie was a character that I liked right off the bat, and the more I got to know her, the more I loved how strong of a heroine she was. Even when she didn’t think she was very strong at all.

Tag is the kind of alphahole that keeps everyone at an arm’s length aside from those in his inner circle. And after surviving a house fire, the last thing on Maddie’s mind as a single mom is dating again. Even though she and Tag peripherally know each other, they connect on such an amazing, pure level after their blind date. Tag sees who Maddie is, beyond her scars and despite of her scars. And with Maddie, he becomes such a different person.

I loved the push and pull between these characters, the banter and sweetness. Gigi was a doll, and I loved how smitten Tag became with her as well.

“I’ll take them!”

That’s what I tell the social worker when my pre-k student and his baby brother need an emergency foster placement. I’ll do anything to keep the brothers from being split up. But my apartment’s flooded and there’s only one house I can take them to on such short notice…his.

Knox Daniels, my older brother’s best friend, offers his new place without hesitation. He’s not moving back to our tiny town until next month—that’s when all our hotshot firefighters are returning for their one and only chance to rebuild our fathers’ fallen, iconic crew.

It doesn’t matter that I’ve been silently in love with Knox since we were kids. It can’t matter that we pretend that reckless prom night kiss never happened. It won’t matter that my feelings for him could destroy his lifelong friendship with my brother and threaten the certification of their hotshot crew. Because I’ll be out of his house long before he gets back.

Except Knox just walked in…a month early. And the icing on this awkward cake? He’s gorgeous as always and I’m covered in baby puke. He takes one look at the boys and tells me we can make this work—

We can temporarily fake a relationship to keep them from being separated by the system.

Suddenly, everything matters.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Reason to Believe is perfection. I was hooked on Harper and Knox’s connection from the very first chapter — her senior prom when they shared a kiss that would soon lead to him pushing her away for seven years — and was there for all of it as these two found their way back together thanks to a fake marriage in order to be foster parents for her preschool student and his infant brother.

Despite the fact that they weren’t a legit couple, Knox and Harper were perfect together. I loved that it snuck up on Knox just how much he was actually in love with Harper and had been for all these years. With his troubled background, he didn’t think he was capable or worthy of being loved, but Harper was the one woman who had always had his heart. Harper has been in love with Knox since she was a teenager, but she had no idea that he had feelings for her as well and it was her brother’s fault that Knox never made a move on her.

In creating a safe place for Liam and Jamie, Knox and Harper along the way created a family unit for themselves. There are lots of obstacles along the way before these two find their happily ever after — Harper feeling like he’s only with her because of the kids, Knox feeling abandoned when Harper walks out after a fight — but these two were so worth fighting for!

Reason To Believe is the start of a new series in Legacy, Colorado, focusing on a group of hotshot firefighters. I definitely want to go back and read the previous two novellas that came before this book, and can’t wait to see what comes next with the rest of the group!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Doctor’s Daughter is another fantastic WW2 historical story by Shari J. Ryan. Sofia and Isaac both showed so much strength despite the horrible surroundings around them and found a sweet, beautiful love in the darkest moments.

The story is primarily told through the POV of Sofia and Isaac, but there are a few heartbreaking chapters from his little sister, Olivia, as well. Sofia is a Jewish girl protected under the “Privileged Marriage” of her mother and father, an Aryan doctor who is now training the Nazi doctors in 1941 Poland. Meanwhile, Isaac and his family are trying to survive living in the Warsaw Ghetto before they family is broken up and he and his sister are sent to Auschwitz. When Isaac is one of the laborers sent to work at Sofia’s family farm, there is an immediate connection between them just through her bedroom window. She may be living in her family home, but it’s still something of a prison. Why should she be inside and not outside with him?

Determined to help Isaac, Sofia and her parents open up their home to him. But with danger lurking around every corner, are they really all safe?

Once again, Shari Ryan delivers a heartbreaking story set in the time of the Holocaust. I cried as these characters clung to hope and felt inspired as they found little bits of faith to get them through such horrible times. Ryan’s words paint a magnificent picture, and I can’t recommend The Doctor’s Daughter (or any of her other books in this genre!) enough! I do hope that we get a story about sweet Olivia some day!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Love You Right, by Julia Kent

Title: Love You Right
Series: Love You, Maine #1
Author: Julia Kent
Genre: Romantic Comedy/Contemporary Romance
Release Date: April 26, 2022
BLURB
A missed opportunity five years ago makes for an unexpected encounter now between two people meant for each other – but who square off in a very public battle of wills in the small town of Love You, Maine, where every day is Valentine’s Day. Can love conquer all in a town steeped in it?

Kell Luview refuses to be a sucker at love again. Five years ago, he left D.C. with his tail between his legs and his heart broken. Fiercely protective of his small town in rural Maine, he’s determined to save the family tree business and avoid his feelings at all costs, no matter how much he longs to solve the mystery of what happened in D.C.

L.A. native Rachel Hart hates being underestimated almost as much as she hates this small town. She has two goals on this trip: get out of the cheesy tourist trap of Love You, Maine with a completed business deal, and avoid running into Kell, her old friend from D.C. who never became an old flame because of a huge misunderstanding.

One that still aches.

When her rental car breaks down on a logging road and Kell comes to her rescue, it’s clear he’s a changed man – and not for the good. Grumpy and reserved, he pushes all her buttons, still stubbornly convinced she betrayed him all those years ago. He’s never forgiven her, and she’s never forgiven herself for carrying a torch for him.

An embarrassing incident gets the town gossip mill going when residents wrongly assume Kell and Rachel are the newest couple to find love in the most romantic place on Earth. But the townsfolk aren’t wrong for long…

As Rachel breaks through his defenses and charms the town, he faces his biggest fear: all those pesky feelings he’s been avoiding.

Because they’re all about Rachel now.

And maybe they always were.

Ample spread.

“We haven’t even had dinner. Thank me after.”

She batted her eyelashes. “Is that an offer?”

“Rachel,” he said, moving his hand from her waist to cup her ass. “That’s more than an offer.”

He started to kiss her again, but she put her fingers on his lips. “If we don’t eat dinner first, we’ll never eat. And I have a meeting here in this very room, to try to pitch the deal again, in three days. Boundaries, Kell – boundaries. I refuse to have sex on this conference table.”

“The thought never, ever occurred to me,” he lied.

“Liar.”

“Caught.”

With a deep laugh he adored, she reached for the bottle of wine. “How about you uncork this and we start with a lovely glass.”

“Fine. The table is off the table.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Love You Right is the first book in a new series by Julia Kent set in the small town of Loview, Maine, where every day is Valentine’s Day. The story follows former friends Rachel and Kellan (Kell), who worked together 5 years ago in DC before she betrayed his trust… or so he thought. Now Rachel has come to Love You to close a business deal with the town’s chocolate company, but Kell has pretty much bad-mouthed her all over town, making the deal impossible for her to close. Will Kell realize that he’s wrong about what happened all those years ago? Will Rachel find comfort in the small town that she didn’t know she needed in her life?

This book had the right amount of push and pull. Some of the scenarios Rachel and Kell find themselves in are hilarious. Superglued together. Skinnydipping in the spring to get off poison ivy. Julia Kent wrote a charming enemies-to-lovers second-chance story with lots of heart, sizzling heat, a plucky heroine, and a sexy lumberjack hero who isn’t afraid to do some groveling to win back the woman he’s lost. Twice.

I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Secrets to Heartbreak by Brittany Taylor

Release Date: April 22

Secrets aren’t meant to be kept forever.

Colton Adler was one hundred percent off limits up until the night we shared together nearly two years ago. Both of us forged a deal between illicit touches and unrelenting kisses.

A secret.

A promise.

A vow made to one another that we would never be anything more than the one night.

Regardless of the feelings I still harbored for him, I understood Colton could never truly be mine.

Since then, we’ve kept our secret buried deep, pretending as if it never happened at all.

But now, after attending my brother’s wedding, Colton was a flashing wave of hot and cold. One minute he was teetering on the edge of giving in to false promises of a forever with me; the next he retreated, reminding me once again that I would never truly be his.

Secrets aren’t meant to be kept forever and it didn’t take long for me to learn I wasn’t Colton’s only one.

*This is Book Two in the Heartbreak Series. It is recommended you read The Rules of Heartbreak, Book One first.*

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars
I love a good secret-crush book, and Colton and Vada’s story did not disappoint. I really loved the emotional angst of Sloan and Dallas’ story and was wondering how Colt and V would compare. It was totally different and didn’t hit me in the gut the same way, but just as good.

Colton has lived his life to meet other people’s expectations. There has always been an attraction between him and Vada, but he’s kept her at a distance. Two years ago, they had a one-night-stand when they were both grieving their friend’s death, and neither one of them ever really got over the other. But Colton doesn’t see himself as relationship material and kept coming up with excuses as to why he couldn’t give Vada anything more than friendship.

Vada and Colton agreed to keep their one-night stand a secret from their other friends, and doing so just made the tension between them more intense. And just when they go public with their feelings for one another, yet another shocking secret threatens to rip them apart. I LOVED that twist in this book because I thought the story was going one way, and then it went in a completely opposite direction and I loved the angst that it added to Colton and Vada’s relationship.

This book was the perfect blend of sweet and steamy, with lots of maturing on the part of our hero. It took a while for Vada and Colton to work things out, but it ended wonderfully with an emotional HEA.

The Secrets To Heartbreak is the second book in Brittany Taylor’s Heartbreak series and it is a standalone, but there is an ongoing story that started with The Rules of Heartbreak. It was great to catch up with Dallas and Sloan and see them move forward with their life together. I was very intrigued by that snippet at the end of Cassidy and Levi’s book!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Tents & Tights by Molly O’Hare

Release Date: April 19

From USA Today bestselling author of Learning Curves comes a best friends to lovers, opposites attract romantic comedy with a curvy, hates the outdoors, boutique owner and an annoyingly attractive, loves the outdoors guy who would rather be in nature than anywhere else. It’s a fine line between friendship and love, right?

Being fed up with never finding clothes in her size or worse, being sent to the maternity section, finally, Eve decided enough was enough and started her plus size boutique. Somewhere along the line, though, her shop led Eve to a friendship with the well-known owner of the famous outdoor adventure store in town. They were complete opposites in every way, but it worked. And even though she’d hate to admit it, he was by far the best friend she’d ever had.

Austin didn’t quite know how it happened. Four years ago, he walked into Own Your Curves to inquire about making plus size outdoor clothes for his shop. And the next thing Austin knew, he was best friends with the feisty, always kept him on his toes, pain in his backside woman. So when she asked for his guidance on expanding her shop, how could he tell her no? There was only one problem, as Austin helped Eve with the expansion, he couldn’t stop his imagination from running wild. Now, if he could just convince her to see it too…
Friendship could definitely end up being more, right?

Austin and Eve’s story is a breath of fresh air. I found these characters wonderfully relatable and thoroughly enjoyed this best friends romance. (Even if it is in third person dual POV, which is just a pet peeve of mine).

I loved how confident Eve was. And Austin was just a sweetheart. Their banter was refreshing and I really felt the connection between these two as friends who become more.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Second Shot With #76 by Piper Rayne

Second Shot with #76 by Piper Rayne is now live!

My mom always said you don’t get a second shot at making a first impression. I’ve remembered that my entire career. Especially since I’m one of the few black men who play professional hockey.

I’m calculated and respectful in the way I speak to my coaches, the owners, and the media. I’ve never taken a risk… until her.

I could blame it on the fact that for once I pushed away the pressure of my career for the ocean waves, the sand, and good times with my new teammates. But those are excuses because the minute I saw her at the airport, something lit up inside me and the best week of my life was spent with her in my bed.

After our week in paradise, we said goodbye, exchanged phone numbers and both assumed that unless one of us was flying through the other’s city on the opposite side of the country, our vacation fling was over.

Then one night after practice I see her. She’s here. In my city. Telling me she moved here for a job. If that’s not fate tell me what is.

I’ve never wanted a second shot more than I do this time, but she’s determined to leave what we were on the island we left behind.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

I really liked where Ande and Cory ended up in the end of Second Shot with #76, but I didn’t love some of the things that happened along the way.

A few months after they had a steamy week-long vacation affair (Tropical Hat Trick), Cory and Ande run into each other in the grocery store when she’s relocated and now lives in the same city where he’s playing for the Floriday Fury. He tried to reach out to her a few times after their trip because she meant so much more to him than a vacation fling, but she just sees herself as another notch on his bedpost and doesn’t want to be played by the player. Now that they are in the same city, Cory is determined to win Ande over and prove that his playboy past is in the past… but she’s still not sure if she should trust him.

I struggled with this story, especially after loving Warner and Imogen so, so much. I felt that Cory and Ande didn’t have the fiery chemistry that I was anticipating they would have. There’s a plot twist to this story that then is a jumping point for Ande to do certain things and behave a certain way when I think she really should have thought better because Cory didn’t deserve what she was doing to him. For me, that plot twist and Ande’s behavior afterward kind of left a sour taste in my mouth, and I struggled to really invest myself in Ande as a heroine after that. It opened the door to unnecessary drama and angst, and I think I would have shipped this couple more had there been a different plot device causing the drama between them.

Bring on Kane and Jana, please! I received a complimentary copy and voluntarily left a review.
