A stoic force to be reckoned with.
The steady rock on which England is destined to lean.
Everyone’s reliable mate, at the ready to defend when called upon.

To the world, Vance Morley is the next great keeper for the Rogue Football Club, biding his time at the academy. The definition of tall, dark and handsome, his quiet confidence and mysterious persona only draw the public in. He’s their mighty anchor, both on and off the pitch.

But when it comes to the one woman he claims to love, he conveniently vanishes at the exact moment I need him. The first time I saw Vance, he was a ten-year-old standing on his lawn across the street. The first time he kissed me, we were sixteen and sitting on the very shores we grew up on. We crashed into each other like waves in a storm, fated to destroy everything in our paths. Including each other.

The first time Vance saw our son, by serendipitous accident, my little boy had already lived the first year of his life. And instantly, the man who chose football over me wants to have it all. There is no way I can trust his declarations of love and fatherhood, especially when I’m set to marry another man.

We’re a new game, one to occupy him until the world stage beckons. But the more I try to tell myself he’s not the one, the more Vance’s efforts to win us back increase.

How can I guard my heart against seeing my son with his father?
Can Vance really sacrifice his dreams in the name of love and family?
Is there a way that everyone else’s safe harbor can finally become mine too?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

They were both adrift, until he anchored them.

The Mighty Anchor is the third and last standalone in Carrie Aarons’ Rogue Academy series, and tells the story of the third horseman of football, Vance Morley. The third mate of Jude and Kingston, he was kind of an aloof loner in the previous books, so I was excited to read his backstory.

Two years after Vance broke things off with his high school sweetheart (in favor of his football career), he runs into Lara by chance on the street in her hometown — and she has a toddler who is the spitting image of Vance. Suddenly, Vance realizes that he gave up everything he wanted, and he wants it back. But Lara is now engaged to another man….. is it too late?

There is a lot of back and forth as Vance and Lara try to rebuild their relationship. They do kiss a few times before she breaks off her engagement to Louis, but then it’s a few months of her and Vance dating before things progress further. CA also does a great job of showing the uncertainty Vance is feeling, torn between wanting to be with his family and wasting the best years of his athletic life waiting for the chance to play pro. How will he reconcile the two?

I do wish that there were some flashback scenes of their previous relationship, because I would have loved to have seen how they were when they were younger. Especially what led to Vance leaving her so cooly in favor of his professional football career. Yes, Lara was wrong in keeping Mason from his father and Vance’s family, but I can understand her reasons. But overall, Carrie Aarons does a great job with this story, and I’m sad to see this series come to an end. But there’s a great epilogue that shows life in the future for all tree couples, so I will just have to hang on to that!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Lip Smacker, by Alison G. Bailey

🔥🔥 NEW RELEASE 🔥🔥

LIP SMACKER by Alison G. Bailey is LIVE! Lip Smacker will be $.99 for release day only. Are you ready for Logan Heath?!

Logan Heath was the sweetest and most beautiful boy I had ever seen. He was popular, smart, and the star quarterback of Fort Johnson High. Every girl in school followed him around in hopes of getting his attention. I was no different, except that I admired Logan from afar. With him being a superstar junior and me being an awkward freshman at a new school our coupling was a mere pipedream.

Implementing my topnotch investigating skills I learned from reading The Nancy Drew Mysteries, I followed Logan’s life from high school through his college career, and then some. Fearing that my stalker-ish tendencies were becoming more of a mental health issue, I purposely lost track of him five years ago. I admit since that time I have thought of Logan. And when I say thought I mean he has popped into one or forty R-rated dreams of mine.

The day he walked into my bakery, butterflies fluttered in my stomach, tingles tingled my skin, and a sequence of R-rated dreams flashed through my head. But I was no longer that awkward teenager, too scared to speak to him. I had grown into a confident woman. A woman who wanted to admire Logan Heath up close and personal. Unfortunately, from the very beginning Logan wanted something from me that I was not willing to give him.

START READING LIP SMACKER TODAY!

My hands landed on my hips. “You can’t set up a mobile office in my bakery.”

“I have to work, Miss Smacker, and I am a paying customer.”

He took a long sip of coffee.

“This is your negotiating tactic? Wait out your target until she gets so annoyed she’ll sign anything to get rid of you?”

“Not to boast, but I’ve never had a woman want to get rid of me. In fact, just the opposite.”

Logan looked wistfully into the air. My guess, sexy memories of the long list of women he’s had encounters with. No doubt they were skinny, had big boobs, big hair, and legs for days, with cute Ivy League sorority names like Buffy, Felicity, and Poppy.

“You can’t stay here the entire day,” I snapped.

“Does that mean you’re ready to discuss Harper’s offer?”

“It means get out. You lurking here in the corner will unnerve my customers.”

“Your customers or you?”

“My customers. You’re already on my nerves.”

“Then let’s talk business.”

“I’m busy!”

He opened his laptop. “Do you have free WiFi?”

“WiFi my ass.” I stomped toward the kitchen.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

This is the first book I’ve read by Alison G. Bailey, so I didn’t know quite what to expect. It was fun and quirky, even if I had to stretch my imagination at times for the logistics of the story. If you were ever the nerdy, dorky teen who dreamed of dating the hot guy at school, then you will totally relate to Lip. (Her name cracked me up!)

There is great banter between Lip and Logan, and the enemies-to-lovers aspect of this story works well. Logan is a pretty swoon-worthy book boyfriend, and this book turned out to be a cute feel-good romance with quirky characters and a wonderful HEA.

They call him the devil.

When I crash-landed into him on my first day at Loyola Academy, I was sure that couldn’t be true.

He was the most gorgeous man I’d ever seen in real life.

Little did I know he was also the cruelest.

I went from starstruck to stunned the moment his cynical eyes cut through me.

I can’t tell you what it was that made him want to punish me. But from that day forward the brooding recluse of a man made it his goal to torment me.

I want to loathe him, and some days, I do.

But good or bad, nobody’s attention has ever tasted so sweet.

What do you do when you have a hate crush on your bully?

Worse yet, what do you do when he’s also your teacher?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

This story took me suspending belief a bit. And it had nothing to do with the forbidden teacher/student relationship. I really didn’t like Sebastian and thought that Stella could have stood up for herself a whole lot more.

Eventually, Sebastian grew on me, especially once his backstory was revealed. It explained a lot about his behavior, but I still didn’t think it excused it. The way he treated Stella at times was absolutely appalling, and I found it hard to believe that she actually fell in love with him. I didn’t find anything in their relationship to be romantic, supportive, or any of the other things that make a person fall in love with another.

Unfortunately, this book was a miss for me. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt:
There’s something about Stella that makes me believe she will always go the extra mile to seek approval from those with authority. I can see it every time she looks at me. And before the end of the hour, I’ve made up my mind. In the past, I picked easy, obvious targets for my projects. Without fail, they failed me. They couldn’t withstand the expectations of their peers and their family and the machine that is Loyola Academy.

But Stella won’t fail. I feel it deep in my gut. A spark of hope that I haven’t had with any of the others. A want I haven’t experienced since my own college days. I will push her harder than I’ve pushed anyone else before her, and she will cling to hold onto herself in the face of any storm I might bring her way. I will open her eyes to the realities of this world. And in the end, she will despise me for my ruthlessness, but she will be grateful.

Stella LeClaire, welcome to my final project.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I went into Love Resurrected having not read any of the San Solomon series previously. And wow, do I wish that I had! Not only because this book is the continuation of Brad’s story (from book #1) three years after Kat has died, but because I really loved this group of friends, and how strong their support of one another was.

Brad is an absolute shell of a man years after his fiancee dies of cancer. Despite the best efforts of his friends to make him start living again, not just existing, he can’t help but feel that he is betraying Kat by being happy when her life is over. Tenley is a friend of a friend’s wife, and they immediately get off on the wrong foot. (But of course!) Yet when they are teamed together for a city project, Brad finds himself smiling a little more, laughing a little bit, and looking forward to seeing her in spite of himself.

Not interested in a relationship, Tenley can take or leave Brad’s surly attitude. And as he attempts to work through his confusing feelings, he runs so hot and cold with her that he gives her whiplash. There is a lot of push and pull with these two characters, but Denise Wells did a fantastic job of walking the reader through Brad’s grief, madness, jealousy, insecurity and everything else that he was feeling. Likewise, I felt like I was going through all of the emotions with Tenley as well as she struggled to make sense of her feelings for Brad and his reactions to their encounters. (When he vomited out of guilt after they had sex for the first time and she thought it was out of repulsion? My heart!)

Brad turns out to be such a romantic hero, despite the cold, broken bastard he is at the onset of this story. This book was a fantastic read, from first page to the epilogue. I will most definitely go read the rest of the series! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

About the Author

Denise Wells has been reading since before she could talk. And to this day, escaping into a book is her go-to activity before anything else.

She’s the author of six romance novels and one YA novel to date. She likes to write about sassy women and semi-flawed alpha-esque men. Denise’s female characters always have strong friendships, potty mouths, and like to drink–a lot. Denise is loyal to a fault, a bit too sarcastic, blindingly optimistic, and pretty freakin’ happy with life overall. As a diehard fan of the band Journey, Denise would be a rock star in the band if she couldn’t be a writer. Preferably during the Steve Perry years, when they were awesome. Home is in the Pacific Northwest where she lives with six special needs dogs, one cat (who’s busy plotting the demise of the six dogs), and a husband (BW) who has the patience and tolerance of a saint. And, lest she forget, Denise also lives with too many to count characters inside her head, who will eventually have their stories told.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Demise Of A Self-Centered Playboy, by Piper Rayne

You might be wondering how you’ll know when your playboy ways are coming to an end. For some it might be an unexpected pregnancy (ahem… you know who), for others it might be finally landing the one woman you’ve always wanted (cough… I won’t mention any names). For me, it was the death of my mentor and the subsequent reading of their will.

The signs were there, they always are. But I didn’t notice them until it was too late, and my demise was complete.

Demise Sign #1– You find yourself thrust into the land of responsibility and you don’t immediately hightail it out of town.

Demise Sign #2– Despite being stuck with the world’s biggest Jekyll & Hyde, some sadistic part of you actually enjoys spending time with her.

Demise Sign #3– Your family suddenly stops wanting to weigh in on every decision in your life.

Demise Sign #4– Somehow you end up being the voice of reason in your tumultuous partnership.

Demise Sign #5 –You start thinking of other people before yourself.

Demise Sign #6– You agree to put yourself in the middle of an Alaskan reality TV show that has both of you sleeping in the same tent.

Demise Complete.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Another great Bailey Siblings book from Piper Rayne, and almost halfway through the series!

I really loved Denver and Cleo’s connection. They kind of knew one another from past interactions, and hated each other just enough to make the sparks fly. But what they thought about one another was dead wrong. Yes, Denver is a playboy, but he’s such a sensitive soul who has been hurt by everyone and everything he loves leaving him. Meanwhile, he sees Cleo as a spoiled rich girl, but that is not at all who she is as this story unfolds. There is so much depth to both of these characters, and watching them fall in love and fight it was a delight.

These books are all pinned as standalones, but I really felt that much of the last book (Falling For My Brother’s Best Friend) was reliant on knowing what came previously on this series. I don’t think that is the case with Playboy. Of course, all of the crazy Bailey siblings and Grandma Dori make their appearances and the family is as up in each other’s business as ever… but Denver and Cleo’s love story itself is contained.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Piper Rayne, or Piper and Rayne, whichever you prefer because we’re not one author, we’re two. Yep, you get two USA Today Bestselling authors for the price of one. Our goal is to bring you romance stories that have “Heartwarming Humor With a Side of Sizzle” (okay…you caught us, that’s our tagline). Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I’ve found that fake relationship stories can be hit or miss. And Dirty Swedish Player packs in a whole lot of tropes: stepbrother, previous relationship, hockey, wounded hero and bad boy. Yet somehow, it all gels together.

I really liked that Nils and Sierra’s story is set AFTER the first fake relationship they had in college. Aside from one flashback chapter, their story is set in current day, where she pretty much hates him and has gone out of her way to avoid him, even thought they have common friends. Sierra reluctantly agrees to help Nils clean up his act following a sex tape scandal by posing as his fake girlfriend, but when lines get blurred, will she be able to keep up her end of the bargain?

That flashback chapter filled in a lot of blanks, gave a lot of insight to why Nils did what he did, and why he is the way he is now. He had an abusive dad, and felt abandoned by his mom. Sierra had a controlling dad and was abandoned by her mom. These two came from some screwed-up childhoods, but were so perfect for one another. I really liked that the slow realization that he was catching feelings for Sierra all over again kind of threw Nils for a loop. I wish there could have been more groveling, because his come-to-Jesus moment fell a little flat in an otherwise entertaining book.

This book is part of the Big Stick series, and while it is a standalone, there are plenty of appearances from the other couples. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Back for More by Kayley Loring is available in Audio! Grab it today!!

WES

When I was a kid, my dad was the gardener for the richest man in town. His daughter, Lily Barnes, told me she could never like a guy like me. Then she kissed me and told me it would never happen again. When it happened again, she told me she could never love me because she was going to leave this place, and I would never leave my dad.

We were never quite friends, not exactly enemies, and we could never quite stop secretly kissing each other.

She never said goodbye before running off to try to make it as an actress. That was her dream, and I wanted her to chase it. Okay, maybe I hated her for it, just a little.

Now she’s back, with no money and even more sass.

A lot has changed around here … except for my hidden feelings about Lily Barnes.

LILY

So, it turns out I’m a terrible actress and now I’m back!

When my father offers me a job at his company, I actually think he’s finally decided I’m worthy of one day taking over the family business. Imagine my surprise when I find out that the gardener’s son is the one who’s being groomed to take over, and I’ve been assigned to work for him.

Wes Carver has always been rich in confidence and abs, but now he’s rich in everything, including disdain for yours truly.

If he thinks I’m not built to work, he’s wrong.

If he thinks he can boss me around just because he’s my boss, he’s delusional.

If he thinks I’m still the girl who could never love him … I may be a better actress than anyone thought.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I am rather new to audio books. In fact, Back For More is only the second book I’ve listened to. But I am hooked.

Back For More is a great story about the one that got away. Years after she left home to become an actress, Lily and Wes’ positions are reversed: the son of the help is now her boss at her dad’s company, where Lily has to work for a year before getting her trust fund. They’ve always been in love with one another, but her insecurities stemming from her fractured relationship with her dad prevented them from ever acting on their feelings. Now that Lily is back in town, Wes is determined to give Lily all that she’s ever wanted.

Teddy Hamilton and Mackenzie Cartwright did a FABULOUS job with their voices. I got sucked in, looking forward to listening on my way to work. folding laundry, and even while cleaning the bathroom.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Before writing steamy romantic comedy novels, Kayley Loring got a BFA in creative writing from a Canadian university and had a fifteen-year career as a screenwriter in Los Angeles (under a different name). She mostly wrote PG-13 family comedies that studios would pay her lots of money for and then never make into movies. In 2017 she decided to move to the Pacific Northwest and write about all the fun stuff that she wasn’t allowed to write about in those PG-13 scripts. Now she’s breathing cleaner air and writing dirtier words. It’s an adjustment she’s happily getting used to.

I didn’t mean to see him naked–it was an accident.

It had to be, right?

Because Noah McCormick and I have never been anything more than friends. In all the years I’ve known him, he’s never once laid a finger on me. And even though he was a cute lifeguard at 16 and a hotter-than-hell sheriff’s deputy at 34, he’s always been that protective guy I could trust to keep his hands to himself. I never wanted to mess with that.

Until I walked in on him getting out of the shower and saw his hard, muscular body totally bare and dripping wet. At that moment I never wanted to mess with anything so badly in my entire life.

I should have covered my eyes. Said I was sorry. At the very least, I could have handed him a towel.

After all, I was only in town for a few days, and he was just doing me a favor by escorting me to my sister’s wedding. It wasn’t a real date.

But I didn’t apologize. And he didn’t cover up.

(Talk about a hot mess.)

After all those years of being just friends, suddenly we’re insatiable.

He’s made it clear he’s not interested in romance. Which is fine with me because

Sure, there have been a handful of almost-moments over the years, but they (silently) mutually agreed to ignore those near-kisses rather than admit their feelings and ruin their friendship.

But when Meg returns home to attend her sister’s wedding, hanging out with her old pal takes on a whole new meaning. Maybe because she recently ended a relationship with a guy who didn’t love her enough, maybe it’s feeling homesick, or maybe it’s just because the timing is finally right. But there’s an undeniable spark between Meg and Noah, and once they cross that line into a no-strings fling, they find that their appetite for one another is Insatiable…

There’s a lot of depth to Meg and Noah’s relationship. She’s a workaholic who has always hidden behind her legal career when it comes to relationships so she’d have an easy out. And in return, she’s never had a guy willing to “slay a dragon” and fight for her. Noah, meanwhile, carries an incredible amount of guilt in regard to his dad’s death and his twin brother’s disability. Because of those family duties, he feels like he’s undeserving of finding happiness as a husband and father. But when Meg makes Noah think about all the things he’s been trying to deny himself, will he find a reason to go slay a dragon and fight for her?

The Cloverleigh Farms series has been an enjoyable series of interconnected standalones, and I find myself liking each couple more than the last. I can’t wait to see what happens for oldest sister Sylvia!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sawyer?” I said in disbelief.

Breaking into a huge grin, she started to run.

I was still standing there in shock when she barreled into me, throwing her arms around my neck. She smelled fucking fantastic. Feminine, sweet, delectable.

“What are you doing here?” I asked, trying to hug her back without getting sweat or paint on her. “I thought you didn’t get in until Thursday.”

“I changed my ticket.” She let go just enough to smile up at me impishly. “I’m glad to see you too.”

I laughed. “I’m glad to see you. You just surprised me is all.”

“That was my plan.” She stepped back, and I figured my odor was probably repulsing her.

“I stink, sorry. I went for a run earlier and I never showered. Then I painted the garage.”

“I never mind the smell of sweat. It means hard work.” She brightened. “Will you run tomorrow? I’d love to go with you.

“Sure. We can run tomorrow. I’m off again.”

“Great! Although I’m probably way out of shape.” She made a face. “My work schedule is so crazy, I don’t run as much as I used to.”

“You look great,” I told her. And it was true—she did look great. Maybe not quite as skinny as the last time I’d seen her, but the added curves looked good on her. My eyes wandered without my brain’s permission to her slightly fuller chest and rounder hips. Quickly, I attempted to look at her face again, but then my gaze lingered on her mouth. I remembered what it had looked like the other night in my fantasy as she’d wrapped her lips around my cock and moaned like it was the best thing she’d ever tasted.

My dick twitched beneath my running shorts, and I cleared my throat. “You’ve got a favorite murder? Is there something I need to know?”

She glanced down at her shirt and smiled. “It’s a podcast about true crime. I’m addicted.”

“Never heard of it.”

A sound of exasperation escaped her. “You live under a rock! I can’t believe you’re still not on social media.”

“Yes, you can.”

“Okay, I can, but it makes it really hard to stalk you.”

I shook my head. “People like you are exactly why I don’t want to be on social media.”

She hit me on the shoulder. “I’m kidding! I just want to keep up with your life. I miss you.”

“So come home more often. Talk to my face.”

She grinned. “I do like seeing your face. Want to go grab a beer? Maybe some food?”

“Sure.”

OOTD teaser 1.jpg
This morning had been . . . different. He was different.
After the second time we had sex, I’d seen a side of Xander I’d never experienced before. Sure, I knew he could be funny. He’d joked with me in the short time we’d been friends, and I totally dug his dry sense of humor, but I’d felt as if I had to pull each one of those out of him.
The Xander that I had this morning was something else.  He’d teased in a way he’d never done with me. Hell, he was downright playful. And if it hadn’t been for those shadows I could still see playing in his inky eyes and the way he said discussing his past was out of the question so unflinchingly, I would have thought he was actually happy.
“What’s on your mind, Shortcake?”
At Xander’s question, I pulled myself from my silent contemplation and turned to look at him.
“I miss the bike,” I answered on a pout. It might not have been the honest answer to his question, but it wasn’t a lie.
When we’d left Xander’s earlier, I noticed that the temp outside had taken a serious dive. Instead of leading me to where he’d parked the Harley the night before, he led me to a rustic-looking shed a few yards from the cabin where a big black and chrome truck was parked.
It was nice, relatively new and clean. I’d even go so far as to say the bench seat took my mind into some pretty deep gutters.
But it wasn’t his bike.
“Know you like the bike, baby, and you look sexy as shit in those pants and that jacket, but you’d have frozen to death on the back of it.”
My belly fluttered at his compliment of the outfit I’d painstakingly chosen the night before with him in mind. Good to know it had the intended effect.
He wasn’t wrong about the cold though. As awesome as my faux leather leggings and moto jacket were, they didn’t do a damn thing against the cold.
“Hmm. So what you’re saying is you like me in leather,” I teased.
He glanced at me out of the corner of his eye, and the side of his mouth hooked upward. “I haven’t seen you in much I haven’t liked. But yeah. That leather comes in a close third.”
“After the red dress?”
“After the red dress,” he confirmed.
Curiosity got the best of me, and I couldn’t help but ask, “So what came in at number one?”
He didn’t hesitate. “Those ripped jeans with the fishnets underneath and that cropped black top you wore to The Tap Room a while back.”
Seriously?” I turned to face him full-on. “That’s nowhere close to the best I’ve got! You’ve seen me in way hotter outfits. Hell, half of what I wear to work is better.” Then something hit me. “Wait—how did you even see me in that?”
“Was walkin’ by the bar, saw you dancin’ through the window,” he answered. “And I didn’t say it was the hottest, babe. Yes, most of what you wear to work has me walkin’ around with a hard-on I can’t get rid of, but that one was still my favorite, ’cause it was you.”
My lips parted and I suddenly found it difficult to breathe as I whispered, “It was me?”
“Yeah,” he replied casually, keeping his eyes on the road, so he couldn’t have seen how big an impact his statement was having on me right then. “From the hair to those boots, it was all you.”
Oh shitDo not cry, Sage, I mentally scolded. I’d spent three years with a man who did everything in his power to change me. He took who I was and twisted and molded until I became something completely different, and I’d let him.
But with one simple comment, the man beside me not only showed he knew the realme, but that he liked it. He couldn’t possibly know, but having him say that meant absolutely everything.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh my goodness! I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning because I had to finish this book. I read it in a single day. And by the time I finally went to sleep, my heart had been stomped upon and my eyes were red and puffy from crying. I hate to say it, only because I’d really been rooting for Cord and Rory, but I think Xander and Sage are my favorite Hope Valley couple yet!

Xander is the alphaest of alpha males. He’s a big, burly, surly, beast of a man. The jabs that he and Sage exchange from the get-go are freakin hilarious. Paul Bunyan and Shortcake had me in stitches with their hatefest. And you know when a couple bickers like that, it’s going to be amazing when they finally give in.

Surprisingly, as much as I laughed while reading this book, was full-blown sobbing at parts, too. Because underneath that big, burly, surly, beast is a man so broken and haunted by the demons of his past that he lives in a self-inflicted world of misery. And when he lets his darkness come between him and Sage, I was a mess. Like with the other books in this series, there’s an incident where Sage is in danger and Xander gets to play knight in black leather armor. And it’s perfect and beautiful and made me cry all over again.

Jessica Prince has done an amazing job with every single book in this series. While they are all standalones, I love how interconnected and intertwined and close this group of friends are, and the support they give one another. And though Sage is a newcomer to Hope Valley, she’s welcomed to the group as one of their own.

Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. That’s why God created central air, after all.
Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boy–she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.
In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. Not that she’d expect a boy to understand.

Author: Carolyn Brown

Release Date: November 12, 2019

Publisher: Montlake Romance

Summary

At the end of her rope, single mom Lily Anderson is determined to move her rebellious children in the right direction. That means taking away their cell phones, tablets, and computers—at least temporarily—and moving to the house where Lily grew up in the rural town of Comfort, Texas. But Lily has a bigger challenge than two sulking kids.
The house comes with Mack Cooper, high school teacher and handsome longtime renter. The arrangement: just housemates. But Mack’s devoted attention to the kids starts to warm Lily’s resistant heart. Then Lily finds an old leather-bound book in which five generations of her female ancestors shared their struggles and dreams. To Lily, it’s a bracing reminder about the importance of family . . . and love.
Now it’s time for Lily to add an adventurous new chapter to the cherished family journal—by embracing a fresh start and taking a chance on a man who could make her house a home.

Excerpt: The Family Journal by Carolyn Brown

Lily reached for her tea at the same time Mack was setting his glass back down. Their hands touched again. Her breath caught in her chest, and her pulse jacked up several notches.

“I’m going to ask you a dumb question,” he drawled. “Do you feel chemistry between us?”

Her chest tightened. Of course she felt something between them, but she damn sure didn’t want to talk about it like they were discussing the price of goat feed. And yet . . . they were adults, not hormonal teenagers who jumped into the fire with both feet when they felt something for another person. How many times had she told her clients in therapy sessions to talk things out?

“Why is that dumb?” she asked.

“It kind of sounded dumb in my head, and even more so when I said it,” he said.

“Yes, I do feel something between us.” She nodded. “I’ve wondered if it’s because I haven’t dated all that much. How about you?”

“No dates in three years. Nothing serious since Natalie,” he admitted.

“Do you think it’s because we hav-haven’t,” she stammered.

“No, I think there’s definitely an attraction between us, and I’ll tell you right now, up front, you deserve better than me,” he said.

Lily frowned so hard that her eyes became mere slits. “Why would you say a stupid thing like that?”

“I’m a high school vo-ag teacher, and I’ll never be rich. Hell, I’m forty-one, and I don’t even own a house. I’ve just got a pickup that’s paid for and a herd of goats,” he said.

“Why, Mack Cooper, are you thinkin’ marriage?” she joked. “You haven’t even kissed me yet.”

“I’m just thinking that we shouldn’t start anything without being completely honest, and, honey, I can remedy that kissing part anytime.” His green eyes twinkled.

Lily felt heat rising to her cheeks when she thought of kissing him. How in the devil would it even work if they did decide to go out, or got into a relationship beyond friendship? They lived in the same house with Holly and Braden underfoot all the time. “I’ve got two kids,” she blurted out.

“I’ve got forty goats.” He grinned.

“Did you say it’s time to go feed the goats?” Braden came across the room and leaned his arms on the back of the sofa.

Point proven, she thought.

“Yep, it is,” Mack answered. “I reckon we both need to get changed so we don’t ruin our good clothes.”

“I’ll be down in five minutes.” Braden ran up the stairs.

Mack crossed the room and bent to brush a sweet kiss across her lips. The tenderness of his mouth barely touching hers and his drawl combined to send a heat flash through her whole body. If that brief contact created such an effect, a relationship might burn down the house.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

This book was so much more than a love story between Lily and Mack, an old high school friend. It was a beautiful story of the strength of women and family, and the bonds that tie us together as family.

Having a hard time with her teenaged children, Lily packs them up and moves them to her rural hometown. But rather than kick out her tenent, Mack, the four become a motley crew of roommates. That is how the romance blossoms between the old friends, but it’s the family journal that Lily finds that helps her heal her relationship with her daughter. And in a way, heal herself, as she’s forced to face some truths she’d turned a blind eye to.

This story is wonderfully written, with rich characters and a gripping tale of love and family. I received an advanced copy via NetGalley from the publisher and voluntarily left a review.
