Sunny Shelly’s Review: An Everyday Hero, by Laura Trentham

An Everyday Hero cover image

Available Now: An Everyday Hero (Heart Of A Hero #2) by Laura Trentham

From award-winning author Laura Trentham comes An Everyday Hero, an emotionally layered novel about redemption, second chances and discovering that life is worth fighting for.

At thirty, Greer Hadley never expected to be forced home to Madison, Tennessee with her life and dreams of being a songwriter up in flames. To make matters worse, a series of bad decisions and even crappier luck lands her community service hours at a nonprofit organization that aids veterans and their families. Greer cannot fathom how she’s supposed to use music to help anyone deal with their trauma and loss when the one thing that brought her joy has failed her.

When Greer meets fifteen-year-old Ally Martinez, her plans to stay detached and do as little as possible get thrown away. New to town and dealing with the death of her father in action, she hides her emotions behind a mask of bitterness and sarcasm, but Greer is able to see past it and recognizes pieces of who she once was in Ally. The raw and obvious talent she possesses could take her to the top and Greer vows to make sure life’s negativities don’t derail Ally’s potential.

After Greer is assigned a veteran to help, she’s not surprised Emmett Lawson, the town’s golden boy, followed his family’s legacy. What leaves her shocked is the shell of a man who believes he doesn’t deserve anyone’s help. A breakthrough with Ally reminds Greer that no one is worth giving up on. So she shows up one day with his old guitar, and meets Emmett’s rage head on with her stubbornness. When a situation with Ally becomes dire, the two of them must become a team to save her—and along the way they might just save themselves too.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

An Everyday Hero is the first book I’ve read by Laura Trentham, and I was quite impressed. There is such a range of emotions that all three of these characters go through, and there is so much growth among them all.

Emmett broke my heart. The frustration and anger he feels jumps off the page, which is a testament to Trentham’s wonderful writing. Ally starts out as the typical angry teen, and for good reason, but she’s evolved into such a wonderful young woman by the end. And Greer never loses her biting sarcasm, no matter how rough things get.

An Everyday Hero is an amazing story of second chances, love, and how a little kindness can go a long way in changing the course of another person’s life. I was intrigued by the blurb, and this inspiring, heartfelt story certainly did not disappoint!

I received an advanced copy courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Three Kiss Clause, by Christopher Harlan

Title: The Three Kiss Clause
Author: Christopher Harlan
Genre: Contemporary Romance

 Release Date: February 4, 2020

Blurb
Cormac Delaney was everything I hated about men—arrogant,
smug and condescending, but he was also everything my body responded
to—gorgeous, tall, brooding, and confident. Oh, and he happened to be a partner
at the publishing company I was trying to get signed to. My
book—“Fu*#$@Boys”—about how men are selfish, sex-crazed pigs—was one vote away
from being published—his vote. But not only did he hate my book, he asked me a
question that would change things between us forever:
“How can you be an expert on men when you’ve never been in a
real relationship?”
He had a point, but I wasn’t about to let him know. Instead
I did what any self-respecting writer and podcaster would do—I proposed a
radical social experiment. Cormac and I would live together for one month as
boyfriend and girlfriend. If he could change my mind about men I’d withdraw my
book. If not, he’d agree to publish it.
My only condition? No sex, or anything physical, whatsoever.
I never thought he’d go for it, but I guess I was wrong
about him, in more ways than one. Don’t get me wrong, I hate Cormac Delaney,
even if he is easy on the eyes. . .fine, he’s good looking. . .alright, he’s
hot as hell, but still! To do this I’m going to have to remind myself of a few
things: we’re only an experiment, nothing more. He’s not the most gorgeous man
I’ve ever seen in my life, he absolutely does not have a body that makes me
tingle in all the right places, and I’m never, under any circumstances, going
to let myself fall for him. . .
Right?

ADD TO GOODREADS

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Tori is an ambitious writer looking to get her book published. Cormac is the alphahole standing in her way. They make a bet to live together for a month as boyfriend and girlfriend, each positive that they will be able to prove their point.

Well, of course, they end up falling in love for real. This story was an absolute delight. It’s witty and charming, full of caustic bites in the beginning between Cormac and Tori to swoony romantic moments in the end. This is the perfect story to snuggle up with under a blanket on a cold winter afternoon because it’s heart-warming and you will fall for Cormac as his ice-cold heart melts for quirky Tori!

The Three Kiss Clause was all kinds of fun! This is the first book I’ve read by Christopher Harlan, and I’ll definitely be looking for more stories. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt
Once the last two fans left, the guys walked toward the door, eager to
get ready to take the stage.
“Treyton,” I called with conviction in my tone.
The guys all mumbled as they walked out of the room with Trey trailing
behind them.
Son of a bitch.
I dragged in a deep breath, then stormed out of the room, stalking
backstage where everyone grabbed food or drinks. I walked right up to Trey
whose back was to me and stepped in front of him. “You heard me.”
His brows squished together.
“You’re acting like a child. Act like a man.”
He grabbed my arm roughly and pulled me out of the room and into a
hallway, slamming the door behind us. He walked into me so I needed to step
back, right into the wall. He caged me in, his hands pressing to the wall above
my head. And just like he had the other night on his bus, he slanted his head
so our faces were close. “Fuck me?” he asked, questioning my words.
I swallowed hard. Having him that close was daunting, even if I was
pissed at him. I remained focused and angry. Because I was. How dare he ignore
me?
He shifted his hips, his erection pressing into my stomach. “Does a child
feel like this?”
Though the intrusion sent zingers through me, I couldn’t let that
distract me. “Stop.”
“Stop what?”
“Stop using your body to try to make me lose focus.”
He smirked, an evil glint in his eyes. “Is that what I do to you?”
“No, you piss me off.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I absolutely adored Kozart, and I have to say that Treyton gave him a run for his money! J. Nathan continues her Savage Beasts series with the next interconnected stand-alone, and this enemies-to-lovers story is pretty damn fantastic.

Together with his best bud, Kozart, Treyton founded Savage Beasts. Like his pal, Trey had a rough childhood, and yearns for the comfort of a family that he never had. Trey and Brielle couldn’t be more opposite, but they just click. They work. There is something raw and beautiful in their connection and journey together.

I really didn’t like Brie much in Kozart’s book. I found her to be petty and manipulative when it came to Kozart and Aubrey. But I got to know a different side of her and learned what makes her tick, and she’s not all that bad. The connection that she and Trey make as they tour the world and fall in love in some of the most romantic cities will warm even the coldest heart.

Treyton is going on my reread list! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

He jerks his thumb at his mansion. “Don’t you want a tour?”

“Of Hearst Castle? No, thanks.”

His expression tells me how incomprehensible that is. “Everyone always wants a tour. Always.”

“I mean, it’s a very nice place, I’m sure.”

Now he looks insulted. He turns to stare at the house, then turns back to me. “Nice?”

“Please don’t take it personally. I’m not trying to start World War III here. A house like that just isn’t my thing.”

“Your thing?”

“Will you stop repeating everything I say?”

“It’s just that I’m having trouble with the fact that you don’t like my house. Everybody likes it. Everybody. Especially women.”

I sign in exasperation. “Oh, for goodness’ sake, Mason, I could give a flying fig what everyone else thinks. I’ll take my cozy little cottage over this place any day.”

But why?”

I fold my arms across my chest and turn my torso toward him. “Why are you so upset that I don’t like it when you don’t like it, either?”

He shouts, “I never said I didn’t like it!”

“You didn’t have to. The closer we got to it, the more you constipated you looked.”

“That’s just my face!”

“Baloney. You hate your house. Admit it.”

Wild-eyed and wound up, he stares at me for a long, silent moment. Then he exhales in a huge gust and drops his head into his hands.

He says miserably, “I totally hate it. It’s awful, isn’t it?”

I pat his shoulder. “It’s beautiful, elegant, and absolutely ridiculous. Have you thought about asking the state legislature if they need new headquarters?”

He moans into his hands. “I don’t even have any furniture except a bed. You should hear how bad it echoes in there. And everything is marble, so it’s always freezing cold. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and think I’m sleeping in a mausoleum!”

I can’t help myself. I start laughing again.

He lifts his head and glares at me. “It’s not funny!”

“It’s so funny I can’t stand it.”

“Do you have any idea what I paid for this place?”

“Your gargantuan mausoleum?” I squint at it through the window. “I dunno. Bazillions?”

“Exactly! Bazillions!”

“I’m no financial whiz, Sparky, but I think they saw you coming.”

When he groans and drops his head against the headrest, closing his eyes, I try to reassure him. “I’m sure there’s some oil baron with twelve ex-wives and a hundred kids who’d love to move into it. With all the members of his country club. And their housekeeping staff.”

Mason opens his eyes and glares at me.

I try to stifle another laugh, but fail. “And the entire population of Portugal.”

“Ha ha.”

“Oh, lighten up. It’s not like you can’t sell it.”

Sounding panicked, he says, “But where would I live?”

“You say that like there are zero options between here and a cardboard box.”

“Name one.”

“There’s a house for sale at the end of my block.”

That astonishes him so much it leaves him speechless.

“You’re right,” I say solemnly. “It’s only a three-bedroom. There’s not enough space for both you and your ego.”

He looks away. “I’m just surprised you’d want me living on the same street as you.”

“Are you kidding? Imagine how much fun we could have screaming obscenities at each other over the backyard fences. The neighbors would love it.”

When he glances back at me and sees me smiling, he smiles, too. “Yeah, especially when they hear your PG version of cursing. ‘Dingwaddle’ this and ‘flying fig’ that. They won’t even know what language we’re speaking.”

We smile at each other so long it starts to get uncomfortable. I look away, patting my hair to make sure no stray strands have escaped from my bun.

After a rough throat clearing, Mason says, “I guess I’ll go in, then.”

“Okay. Goodnight. And thanks again for dinner. I love that place.”

When he doesn’t respond, I glance over at him. He’s staring back at me with the same warm look that flustered me at the restaurant. “You’re welcome, Pink. Anytime.”

“So I’ll send you all the information on Stephanie as soon as I vet her file. Okay?”

“Sure. Looking forward to it.”

An awkward silence follows. Finally, Mason breaks it by saying, “Sweet dreams.” He opens the door and starts to get out.

“Wait.”

He turns to me, his hand on the door and a question in his eyes.

“I, um, I need to say something.”

He groans. “You’re killing me, you know that?”

“No, this isn’t anything about you. You haven’t done anything wrong. This is about me.”

Eyes alight, he settles back into his seat. “This should be interesting.”

I search his face before I speak, because I want to be sure I don’t miss any change in his expression. “I’m sorry for teasing you about your ego. It’s not nice. And I don’t want you to think that I think there’s anything wrong with you, because I don’t.”

His face goes through several different emotions before it settles on something I can’t identify. It’s part pain and part pleasure, with a whole lot of ambivalence thrown in.

He says softly, “I know you don’t think there’s anything wrong with me. Which is what makes me assume your parents must’ve dropped you on your head a lot when you were a baby.”

“Oh, for crying out loud. I’m trying to apologize here!”

He grins. “You did. I heard you. And you don’t have to do it again, because I like it when you give me shit.”

When I quirk my lips, he amends quickly, “The business. I meant I like it when you give me the business. Nobody else mouths off to me the way you do.”

“Good to know,” I say, smiling. “Now that I know you like it, the gloves will come off, pal, so you better watch out.”

“I can hardly wait.”

We sit there grinning at each other, until Mason says, “Get outta here. I’ll talk to you next week.”

“Aye-aye, Captain.”

Then it all falls apart in slow motion.

I don’t know what makes me do it. I honestly don’t. One minute we’re smiling and saying goodbye, the next minute I’m impulsively leaning over to give him a kiss on the cheek.

Only he’s turning his head, so my target moves.

Where his cheek was supposed to be, suddenly his lips are there instead.

His warm, soft, beautiful lips, which part when they meet mine.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Words cannot express how much I ADORED this book. I was hooked from the first chapter, and the banter and bickering between Mason and Madison had me laughing so hard I was crying. It was practically love at first sight, but they push every one of each other’s buttons and are both stubborn as hell.

He’s a surly, bad-boy football star with anger issues and a bad rep, looking to find a wife to clean up his image. She’s a prim and proper, pink-loving Southern Belle matchmaker. They make zero sense on paper, but the chemistry between them is insane. They make each other insane. But Maddie is able to see something inside of Mason that few people do in those rare moments when he allows himself to be vulnerable around her. His crappy childhood left him feeling like he’s unworthy of being loved, and he doesn’t think he’s good enough for her. Thanks to a little help from his very own Hermoine Granger, Mason is able to start a new story for himself and not be a slave to the mistakes of his past.

I loved the occasional chapters from Maddie’a witchy aunt and Mason’s agent, Dick, as they try to play matchmaker with the matchmaker. The chapter with the aunt’s coven is great! And part of me was hoping that she and Dick would find their own love match, so the four of them could create their own little family.

From start to finish, Rules Of Engagement is a gem! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: A Favor For A Favor, by Helena Hunting

AFFAF - BT banner

“Bishop and Stevie’s relationship is pure, raw, can’t-take-your-eyes-off-the-the-page kindle crack. One of my favorite books by this brilliant author.” – LJ Shen, USA Today bestselling author

A Favor for a Favor, all-new standalone slow burn romance from New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting, is available now!

A Favor for a Favor, cover

A new stand-alone romance about trading favors, battling wills, and winning love.

When I joined Seattle’s NHL expansion team, I thought it was the start of something great. But nothing ever goes the way you expect. Take my introduction to my new neighbor. She came rolling in on the hot mess express at midnight, making a racket while she tried to get into my team captain’s apartment. Did I mention that he’s married to a woman who definitely was not her?

Imagine my surprise when I end up with an injury that has me out of the game for weeks, and she’s the one to offer to help me. I should probably add that she’s not the captain’s mistress. She’s his sexy, pastel-haired younger sister.

So we come up with an arrangement: she rehabs me so that I can get back on the ice sooner, and she can add a professional athlete that isn’t her brother to her client list. Seems simple enough. As long as I can keep my hands to myself and my hormones in check.

She makes me lift my arm and drapes it over her shoulder. She’s incredibly small compared to me. She tucks one arm under my knee and gently grips the back of my calf with the other. “On the count of three,” she orders. I tense up when she hits three. She gets my leg about six inches off the floor, which is when I scream bloody murder again and grab on to her with both hands.

“Okay. That’s not going to work. The angle is too awkward.” She taps her lip and holds her finger up. “I have an idea.”

She ducks out from under my arm and hooks her fingers in the waistband of her yoga pants.

“What the hell are you doing?”

“Calm down. Some bathing suits have less coverage than my underwear. Besides, it’s nothing you haven’t seen before.”

She kicks off her yoga pants, leaving her in a T-shirt and panties. They’re plain cotton boy shorts, which should be a good thing, but apparently my body doesn’t care that it’s not a satin or lace thong. All it cares about is the proximity of almost-naked pussy.

Rook’s sister is standing in my bathroom in her underwear. If I had a sister who looked like Stevie and I knew that she was standing in one of my teammate’s bathrooms half-naked, I would probably kick the shit out of the guy. Thankfully, I have a brother.

I try to keep my eyes averted, sort of, but I catch her reflection in the vanity mirror.

She has fantastic legs. Athletic. Strong. And her ass. Goddamn. She definitely does a lot of squats, based on how round and firm it looks. The ache in my groin turns into that stabbing pain again because I’m getting hard. I think about my grandmother in a bathing suit to counteract the effect of Stevie being partly undressed.

She steps into the tub, and I force myself to keep my eyes down, bringing up the image of that hot chick in the tub who turns into a rotting old lady in The Shining. That helps a bit. At least until Stevie moves into my personal space and starts touching me again. I mutter a string of profanity, especially when I feel her boob pressed against my arm for a few seconds. I have no choice but to latch on to her shoulder as we lift my leg over the edge of the tub. I’m sweating, I’m angry, and I hate my dick.

“I need you to stop touching me!” It’s stupid because I’m still holding on to her, not the other way around.

“Why are you yelling at me?” she shouts back.

“Because you’re half-undressed in my tub, and I’m a guy, and apparently my dick is a fucking sadist. It honestly feels like my balls are on fire right now. A semi has never] been this painful.”

“Well, close your damn eyes and think about dead things.”

“It doesn’t matter if I close them. The image of you in panties is burned into the back of my lids, probably for the rest of my fucking life. It’s all I can see.”

“You’d think you’d never seen a set of bare legs before.” She helps me lower myself into the tub and steps out.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a pair up close,” I grumble.

“Such a surprise, with your warm, fuzzy personality.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

A Favor For A Favor is #2 in Helena Hunting’s steamy All In series, a spin-off from the Pucked world. Stevie is the little sister of Rook from A Lie For A Lie, and Bishop is his teammate who lives across the hall.

Their meet-cute isn’t exactly cute… they get off to a really rocky start, and spend a few weeks purposely pushing one another’s buttons. They get one another all riled up, and Bishop cements himself as a a-hole. But when he gets hurt, and Stevie is trying to throw off a crazy ex, they form an agreement: She will rehab him in exchange for him being her fake boyfriend. And while Bishop starts to catch feelings for his fake girlfriend, will he tow the line when instructed to keep his hands off of Stevie by her big brother?

Well, it’s a line they are both willing to cross. There are some major sparks between Bishop and Stevie from the get-go, and their banter is witty, caustic and fun. I’ve enjoyed the first two books in this series and can’t wait for Kingston’s book next.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Frenemies, by Emma Hart

FREN-LIVE3.jpg

Blurb:
There are some things you just have to deal with.
Like your hot as hell college booty call moving in next door with his adorable daughter.

The only time we’ve ever gotten along is under the sheets. Old habits die hard because two minutes on my front porch is how long it takes us to bicker.

Not that a little fact like that bothers my healthy, eighty-year-old grandmother and roommate who’s determined to see me married before she bites the dust.
Unfortunately for me, she’s got her eye set on Cameron Black.

She’s barking up the wrong tree. He’s not The One, no matter how much I swoon when I see him with his daughter. I have no intentions of rekindling anything with him—until a rubber spider in my mailbox starts off the mother of all neighborhood prank wars, just like the ones we had in college, and throws me right into his path.

One that leads right to his bedroom…

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I always know what I can expect from an Emma Hart book, and I’m happy to say that Frenemies met all of my expectations. When a hot single dad moves next door to Imogen and her grandmother, Immy never in a million years would have expected that he’d turn out to be her longtime college fling.

Except that fling isn’t quite an accurate description for Mason and Immy’s relationship. They were both so focused on keeping things casual that they didn’t quite know what to do when they fell in love. But neither one of them ever confessed that to the other, and Mason ghosted her when he graduated. As much as it broke Immy’s heart that he never called her like he promised, Mason has always thought of her as the one that got away.

Now it’s 6 years later, and the spark is just as strong as it ever was. Immy is determined to keep holding on to that grudge, but as their college prank war amps up to a grown-up level, she finds the walls around her heart coming down each time Grandma Jen sends her over with baked goods. Frenemies is a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers second-chance romance, packed with feelings, lots of laughs and an adorable little girl. I love how both Immy and Mason are able to realize that while their love is still strong, they probably would have crashed and burned had they not had that six-year gap in their relationship.

Frenemies is also the fourth book I’ve read in a row with a meddling grandma, and Grandma Jen is a hoot. I loved the tease at the end for cousin Hannah’s upcoming story with her hunky British neighbor!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Bastard Bachelor Society, by Sara Ney

What is the Bastard Bachelor Society?

It’s a gentleman’s club—like the dignified men of the past used to have.

Except, we’re not gentleman, and we’re not dignified.

We’re ineligible bachelors; bored, jaded and not looking for relationships. Quite the opposite actually

We’re so committed to being single, we’ve created a high stakes bet to see who can remain single the longest. Rules are involved. Prizes.

Laugh it up, but I’m no loser.

Enemy number one to my single status? My irresistible neighbor, Abbott Margolis. She with her evil cat Desdemona, and Sexy AF pencil skirts. She’s kind and beautiful and hilarious. We can’t get involved, no matter how much her meddling grandmother pushes us together. But if I was going to lose this bet for anyone? It would for Abbott.

Let’s face facts: I’m a bastard, unwilling to settle down.

Especially when there’s a bet to win.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

Abbott and his friends have made a bet. No dating. You date, you lose the bet.

Well, guess what? The sexy neighbor next door, Abbott, makes him throw that rule right out the window. Sure, he tries to not fall. But we all know how this story goes.

It’s light-hearted and a bit quirky, but I found Brooks and Abbott to be a bit bland as characters. The romance between them develops nicely, but I just didn’t ship them the way I wanted to. I thought that they could have been fleshed-out more, and the whole concept of the story hinges on Brooks being a “bastard” — and I didn’t think he was THAT much of one.

I’ve read several sports romances by Sara Ney, so it was nice to try another trope by this author. She did it well. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Blurb:
A hero who forgets Valentine’s Day.
A hero who remembers.
A hero with a Valentine’s surprise.
And a hero with a holiday declaration.

Dirty Filthy Valentine – When Donovan forgets Valentine’s Day, Sabrina spends the evening at the office, working. Until she realizes she’s not alone.

Filthy Valentine Fix – Trish loves parties at The Open Door, even on Valentine’s Day. What she doesn’t love is some of the customs associated with the holiday. Will her boyfriend ignore them like she wants him to? Or will he force her to enjoy the day in ways she never knew she could?

Dirty Sweet Valentine – Like her boss, Amy has a reason for being a Scrooge about love. As far as she’s concerned, that stupid holiday with all the hearts and flowers is just another day. Then a surprise shows up on her doorstep, and her evening takes a sudden turn.

Plus one more story featuring a virgin with a secret and the boy who wants to expose it.

These four standalone romances can be found in this steaming hot holiday collection, from the author of the Fixed Trilogy and Dirty Filthy Rich Men.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Four short stories featuring four couples from Laurelin’s Dirty Fixed world. These were fine enough to read on their own, but it’s not a series that I’ve followed, so I didn’t *love* this treat of catching up with the couples the way I probably would have otherwise.

The stories themselves are hot and steamy, full of alpha males and romantic moments with the women who have captured their hearts. So if you are a Dirty Fixed World fan, you need to add this to your TBR.

About the Author:
With millions of books sold worldwide, Laurelin Paige is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling Author. She is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however.

When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Game of Thrones or Letterkenny, or dreaming of Michael Fassbender. She’s also a proud member of Mensa International though she doesn’t do anything with the organization except use it as material for her bio.

She is represented by Rebecca Friedman.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Cruelest Stranger, by Winter Renshaw

The first time I saw him was at a bar called Ophelia’s on a misty Thursday night. I was there to drown my sorrows after a trying day, he was there to escape the storm. After a brief yet incredibly cruel exchange, the handsome stranger bolted before I had a chance to tell him off. Incensed and three cocktails deep, I followed him out the door, determined to give the audacious Adonis a piece of my mind.
Tearing after him in heels and barely able to keep up in the freezing rain, I ended my chase when I realized where he was going.
They say never to judge someone unless you know their story.
I never could have anticipated his…
And I never could have anticipated the way our paths would cross again—or that I would one day find myself falling for a man with a hollow cavity where his heart should be, a man as callous as he was beautiful, as complicated as he was mesmeric.
They say never to judge someone unless you know their story.
This one’s ours.

Astaire

The sound of children laughing and shuffling down the hallway Friday morning is my cue to silence my phone.

I tuck it into my top drawer for the day and reach for my coffee, stealing a few more sips before the craziness of the day ensues.

I found the Schoenbach obituary—if you can call it that—earlier this morning. The funeral home posted it sometime last night.

Her name was Larissa Cleary-Schoenbach, and she was twenty-seven when she passed. It mentioned no family, no cause of death, no photograph. Nothing more than a birthdate and a single line about a private sunrise memorial service tomorrow morning and the words INVITATION ONLY in bold red letters. All caps.

I spent a few minutes Googling “Larissa Cleary-Schoenbach” earlier this morning. But I couldn’t find a thing.

No social media.

No LinkedIn.

No archived newspaper articles of any kind.

No graduation archives; high school, college or otherwise.

It’s as if this woman never existed.

“Good morning, good morning!” I take my place at the front of the room, grinning and waving and trying to psych them up for the day. Fridays are hard. The kids are exhausted, attention spans are waning. My students hang their jackets and bags on their hooks and then make their way to their assigned square on the rug. “Happy Friday!”

I maintain the smile on my face, sing our morning song, and begin the day’s lesson, but today I can’t help but feel like I’m merely going through the motions. My mind is fixated on that man from the bar last night—and the mystery woman he’s burying.

With the hyphenated name and similar age, it’s fair to assume she was his wife.

At first I thought it seemed odd that she’d have a private sunrise memorial service, but maybe sunrises were her thing? And maybe her passing was so tragic and unspeakable that all he wants is to protect her privacy?

By the time the kids head out for first recess ninety minutes later, I’ve concocted a beautiful love story for the two of them. I’ve imagined a passionate, love-at-first-sight romance.

Trips to Paris.

A sunset proposal.

Slow dances in empty bars.

Lazy Sunday afternoons sipping tea and trading poetry.

Saturday strolls in Lincoln Park.

New Year’s Eve kisses on snowy hotel balconies, her lashes covered in snowflakes as he wraps her tight to keep her warm.

In my heart of hearts, I want to believe he was beautifully, wonderfully kind to her.

That he loved her more than anything in the entire world.

That her death shattered his heart into a million, irreparable pieces.

I want to believe that that was the cause of his cruelty last night.

That he’s simply angry at the world for taking the love of his life away from him.

Death and loss can do a number on you. It can change your entire personality if you let it. Some of my darkest days came in the months following Trevor’s passing.

I want to believe Bennett has friends and family getting him through this, but last night, Eduardo mentioned that when Bennett stops in, he never talks to anyone—which leads me to assume he only comes solo.

Maybe he’s painfully private?

Maybe she was his entire world? All he had?

Maybe they’d had a falling out and weren’t speaking when she died?

The kids return from recess, peeling out of their scarves and gloves, cheeks flushed and eyes wet from the cold. Making my way to the front of the classroom to start the next lesson, I decide to do what Trevor would do if here were still here: I give the cruel stranger from last night the benefit of the doubt.

And then I carry on with my day.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

A horribly rainy night sets the scene for Astaire and Bennett’s first run-in. It doesn’t go well. And as they run into each other time and time again, he continues to be a cruel bastard. Even when she gives him no reason to be.

Astaire gives him the benefit of the doubt over and over again, to the point where she’s a fool. But she sees only the best in people, and thinks there’s a soft heart under the cold exterior. I don’t know where she sees that, because he’s a grade-A jerk. Even when he says he misses her… I questioned it because it came out of nowhere. There were no indications that he wanted anything other than to sleep with her, then all of a sudden he’s caught feelings?

There’s a deeper connection with Astaire and Bennett, which I liked, and once the pieces of Bennett’s puzzle started clicking into place, I figured it out quite easily. There’s also a hella lot of family drama with his mom and brother and his niece. Twisted, twisted drama. But it brings Bennett to stand up and be a better man, and as a result, he and Astaire both end up getting the family they so desperately wanted.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Firecracker, by Kelly Jamieson

Will you give in to the spark?
Firecracker by Kelly Jamieson is now available!

Arden Lennox’s charmed life may be in pieces, but she’d sooner get her hoohaw bleached than move back in with her parents. She’s no longer the prom-queen princess married to the football star. She’s a broke, penniless widow, and it’s time she stood on her own two feet.An under-construction unit in a quaint Chicago brownstone is cheap (free), but it comes with an unexpected surprise. Tyler Ramirez, her brother’s gawky high school best friend, is now a smoking hot firefighter who spends most of his spare time in her unit hammering, drilling, and screwing. Usually with his shirt off—a temptation she has no intention of indulging.

Tyler can’t believe his high school crush is living right across the hall, or how fast his fierce lust for her comes blazing back. She’s still gorgeous—a little sadder, a little quieter, but still with the amazing smile and sweet body that fueled his awkward teenage fantasies.

Despite her best intentions, Arden can’t resist grown up Tyler but the sparks between them send her into full retreat. And by the time she realizes the heat between them could last a lifetime, it could be too late to tell him…

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

When Arden’s husband commits suicide, her world is shattered. She’s carrying a lot of guilt and baggage when she moves into the building her little brother is renovating to start over. So the last thing she expects is to fall for her brother’s best friend, Tyler, who lives across the hall.

There’s a ton of chemistry between the two of them right off the bat. Tyler has been carrying a torch for Arden since they were kids, and he is such a sweetheart as he goes out of his way to make her see him as something more than just her little brother’s best friend. He’s a swoony, sexy firefighter, and the sparks fly between them.
