Sunny Shelly’s Review: Single and Ready to Jingle by Piper Rayne

The girl who loves Christmas falls for the Grinch—it’s a Christmas miracle.

What started as a dumpster fire of a blind date turns into a deal.

In truth, it probably didn’t help that I showed up dressed like an elf but that’s a story for another time. Our start was rocky at best which is why it’s so frustrating that I can’t stop thinking about his sexy British accent. Or the way his chest and arms fill out his suit. Or his perfect hair with that single streak of grey at the front.

Santa likes lists and so do I, so here’s all the reasons why Andrew and I aren’t right for each other:

He’s my brother’s best friend

He’s the biggest grump I’ve ever met.

He hates Christmas.

That last one is big for a girl like me who thinks that the entire month of December should be a national holiday. So, when he calls for my help in planning his firm’s holiday party, I can’t pass up the opportunity to grow my small business. Bonus, we make a deal, and he agrees to attend three holiday events with me so I can make him fall in love with Christmas. As if I’d pass up an opportunity to make a Grinch’s heart grow three times its size.

It isn’t long until I discover Andrew has a very real reason to hate Christmas and I start to see him in a different light. That’s when the Christmas miracle begins.

What happens when you cross a Christmas-loving heroine with a Grinchy Scrooge who hates everything about the holiday? You get this adorable romcom from Piper Rayne! Sweet and swoony and full of holiday cheer!

Kenzie and Andrew were magical together. They definitely get off on the wrong foot, and he is such a grumpy a-hole. But soon they begin to spend more time together after they make a pact — he needs her to plan his law firm’s holiday party so he has a better chance at making partner, and she wants to get him to love Christmas again. And it’s not long before Kenzie discovers that there is a very sweet side to the grumpy Brit after all. I mean, he buys every hot chocolate flavor and topping he can find because he didn’t know what she liked? Swoon!

Both Kenzie and Andrew have some deep-rooted insecurities that affect their relationship, and of course that leads to The Conflict. And Andrew does some grade-A groveling to make it up to Kenzie after their relationship implodes. I never would have imagined that the grump we met on their blind date was the same guy who is with Kenzie at the end of the book, but that’s love for you! And some Christmas magic!

Narrators John Lane and CJ Bloom were perfection in bringing this delectable holiday tale to life!

LAYLA

Two years ago, I fled.

I have no choice but to pack up and move back to Quaint when a tiny computer glitch screws me out of my next traveling nurse opportunity. At first, it makes me anxious. Because he’s there. My ex, the man I pulled away from instead of leaning on after tragedy struck.

Then I realize I’m being gifted another chance to redeem myself from past mistakes and release the guilt I’ve been harboring. The problem? Luke Sacks has no intention of forgiving me. He spits nasty insults at me every chance he gets. Glares at me with those brilliant green eyes that used to worship me.

It only worsens when I put my foot in my mouth and lie to a coworker that Luke and I are together again. Only, we’re far from it.

LUKE

Two years ago, she fled.

After a bar fight leaves me with a nasty little gash, my twin brother forces me to the emergency room. In a flash, it’s as if the past two years haven’t gone by because she’s there. My ex, the woman I lowered to one knee for.

The chance encounter is short-lived, but then suddenly, she’s back in Quaint, declaring to a coworker that we’re back together. I go from being her ex-fiancé to her fake boyfriend in seconds. Stunned, I don’t clear the air. First, because this guy rubs me the wrong way. Second, the heartbreak is too real, the anger too palpable.

So, I strike up a deal that I’m positive will have her leaving Quaint permanently. Because there’s no way I’ll ever forgive Layla Robinson for what she did to me, for the shockwave she leveled me with when she pulled her Houdini act.

This time when she leaves, I’ll be looking forward to it.

TRIGGER WARNING – SEXUAL ASSAULT, VIOLENT BEHAVIOR

I STILL LOVE YOU is a full-length enemies to lovers, second chance, fake dating romance with a hot twin, hilarious side characters, angsty tension, and past mistakes that eventually lead to a happily ever after! Recommended for 18+.

Tropes are enemies to lovers, second chance, and fake dating.

Cover artist is Amanda Walker.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

This enemies-to-lovers romance is also a second-chance romance between Layla and Luke, who were engaged a few years ago before she fled their small town after her dad’s sudden death. Instead of leaning on Luke in her grief, Layla cut all ties and ghosted him. But now she’s back in their small town for a three-month nursing contract and they keep crossing paths. When Layla needs to get a creepy co-worker off her back, she claims that she and Luke have reunited. And although Luke still has so much anger about the way that their relationship ended, he reluctantly agrees to go along with it. But there’s a thin line between love and hate…

Of course, these two reconnect as they are pretending to be back together. And after they finally admit they never stopped loving one another, things are actually better than ever. But then Luke jumps to unnecessary conclusions, without talking to Layla, and thus The Conflict happens. I get that he had been betrayed by her once before, but if he really was looking for a new start on their relationship, why not give her the chance to explain?

Well, this story does have a HEA, so they do work things out 🙂 If you don’t mind a hero who needs a slap upside the head, then I Still Love You is a great second-chance, small-town romance!

Another fantastic addition to Kennedy Fox’s Love in Isolation series! I adored grumpy Finn and sunny Oakley in The Fall of Us and shipped them so hard! From the moment they meet — and it does NOT go well! — to seeing how they begin to develop feelings for one another and eventually fall in love, I loved everything about this story.

Heartbreak has hardened Finn’s heart and has left him cynical and grumpy. His world is turned upside down when vibrant, energetic Oakley arrives at his family’s inn to do a painting. And while they start off pretty much detesting one another, there is something about Oakley that does funny things to Finn’s heart and makes it start beating once again. The banter between these two is so on-point, and this story checks all the boxes to make it funny, witty, swoony, and romantic!

About the Book:

Lennon Jacobs is nobody.

Born with a rare eye condition and living in a world of black and white, she’s unable to drive, find an accommodating job, and have the life she’s always dreamed of. From her viewpoint, she can’t see anything special about herself—but Dylan Pierce disagrees.

When the famous rock star spots her from across a crowded room, he sees something in her she doesn’t and is desperate to uncover her secrets. Lennon makes the split decision to pretend to be someone she’s not. For one night and one night only, she manages to be someone confident, worthy, and important, then slips away expecting to never see him again.

Imagine her surprise when the first man to make her feel like somebody shows up at her front door …

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Girl in the Front Row is so much more than a rockstar romance. It is a heartfelt story of learning how to love and accept yourself, finding a reason to fight through the darkness of depression, and an inside look at what it’s like to live life with an invisible disability.

Lennon and Dylan’s story starts off with heated passion and lust when a superfan has a one-night stand with the rock god she’s been obsessed with since she was a kid. (He is 10 years older than her.) But it evolves into a fantastic, sweeping kind of epic romance. This brilliant story is full of angst, full of push and pull, involves a love triangle and a bit of emotional cheating, and so much vulnerability.

Having been born with a rare eye condition that made her legally blind, Lennon has always lived her life in a cloud of darkness. But Dylan’s amputation happened when he was 35, and he has been struggling to figure out how to deal with that trauma and the blow it gave to his fragile ego. Who is he, Dylan Pierce, without his rockstar swagger? Will the sold-out crowds come back if he can’t give them the energetic performances that he used to? Will he ever be able to write another song again, having been changed so dramatically on so many levels?

Dylan finds his muse in Lennon, and while it’s fun at first to be dating her celebrity crush, he’s not exactly a constant in her life. This story is far from one full of rainbows and unicorns, and it is a hard-earned happily ever after for this couple. Because they go through A LOT to be together. There is a ton of growing up that Dylan does in this book, and Lennon goes through a metamorphosis of her own as she fights for independence and confidence after having lived her life completely dependent on those around her.

I’m trying to not give many details away, because this story truly is inspirational, and one of a kind. Just read it. Yes, it’s a story about an average girl who falls in love with her celebrity crush, and he even loves her back. But The Girl in the Front Row is so much more than that. It is really eye-opening when it comes to the struggles of people with disabilities, and I am so in awe of how Kelsey Kingsley for pouring her heart and soul into this story, drawing upon her own experiences to do so.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Troubles With Heartbreak by Brittany Taylor

The Trouble with Heartbreak by Brittany Taylor
Release Date: October 14th

Trouble #1:
Levi Hawkins. Always….

Levi Hawkins has been trouble since the first time I saw him through the lens of my camera our senior year of high school.

He was the star quarterback.
I was the yearbook photographer.

Although Levi’s hatred for me was no secret, I spent the entire school year fighting my feelings for him, counting down to the day of graduation.

When that day finally came, I foolishly thought I’d seen the last of him. Until five years later, when he walked into the same newspaper I worked for. Only now, he was no longer a football star. He’s the paper’s newest reporter.

Disguised by a grand opening of a hotel on the shores of South Padre Island, Levi dragged me on an assignment. His college football reunion.

But just when I thought he’d roped me in enough trouble, he asked for one more favor.

Pretend to be his fiancé… for the entire reunion.

I knew he had dragged me along to get a story, but it wasn’t long before I realized there was more written between the lines.

And then I remembered… Levi Hawkins has always been trouble.

*This is the final book in the Heartbreak Series.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

There’s a fine line between love and hate…. Cassidy and Levi’s story brings the Heartbreak series to an end. This one is a forced-proximity, fake engagement, enemies-to-lovers story with a lot of steam, loads of vulnerability from the hero, and some pretty heated barbs exchanged between Cassidy and Levi that are actually just covering up their true feelings for one another.

While I enjoyed this story very much, I didn’t think it had the punch that the first book in this series did. Once everything was all out on the table between Levi and Cassidy, I felt like I was expecting more for his reasons why he hated her. The way he used her as part of a revenge plot to one-up his college rival was crappy, but he did do some good groveling to win her back. Ultimately, Levi came around from a hero I didn’t really like much at the start, which is a testament to Brittany Taylor’s writing.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Secret Roommate by Sara Ney

Release Date: October 3

All I need is a place to hide for a few weeks.

The paparazzi were on my ass 24/7 and I needed a bit of breathing room—an escape from the madness—before the media frenzy begins.

Sure, I could have gone to a secluded cabin in the woods—but I didn’t want to be bored out of my mind. I’d seen enough wide open spaces as a kid from Texas to last me a lifetime.

So instead, I let my agent hook me up with a modest house in the burbs where we didn’t think anyone would find me hiding in plain sight.

I’d have a roommate; but supposedly, she was going to give me space. Stay out of my way and respect my boundaries. According to my agent, I wouldn’t hear a peep from her.

Wrong. He was wrong about everything and now my life was never going to be the same.

Man, I thought that Posey and Duke were going to kill each other with their prank wars before they ever got it on! The Secret Roommate was hilarious. Even though Duke was described as a giant a-hole, he was a squishy marshmallow of a giant when it came to Posey.

Football star Duke needs a place to hide out until news breaks about his trade in teams, and Eli and Molly (from The Make Out Artist) convince Molly’s former roommie, Posey, to let him stay with her for two weeks. Naturally, the first meeting does not go off without a hitch, setting these two off on the wrong foot. The pranks escalate from there, and even though Posey finds Duke to be a big doofus, she eventually sees a sweeter, softer side to the brute. And she finds his Texas twang irresistible!

This book is super cute. No major drama, just some stupid decisions that cause tension between them. It’s a feel-good romcom that will leave you with a smile on your face!

EXCERPT
I pause in front of an unexpected door. Does this hotel room have another room?
I twist the deadbolt and try to open it, but it doesn’t budge. I jerk and shake it, then realize there is another latch that drops into the floor. I bend down and lift it.
The door opens to reveal — another door. But this one doesn’t have a knob. That’s odd.
This door rattles. I press my ear against the wood to listen.
Then suddenly, the door flies open, and I fall onto the floor on the other side!
My face smashes into orange carpet. It smells like an orange, too. I lift my head. “What in thunder?”
There’s a mandarin duvet on the bed. Orange walls, textured to look like the inside of a peel.
Then, right by my cheek, two feet.
Man feet. Square nails.
Pants, no cuffs. The hem lands exactly where it should, custom tailored.
I rise to my hands and knees, shaking off my fall as I lift my head. The pant legs are tapered and crisply ironed. The belt is Italian leather. The shirt is pale green, the cuffs rolled up to reveal strong, tan forearms.
The neck is unbuttoned.
Then I see his face.
Good Lord. He’s gorgeous and blue-eyed with sandy hair. He must be a model, comped a stay by the hotel. I’d comp him anything he asked for.
He stares at me with an odd expression of amusement. “Falling for me already?”
Worst opening line ever.
But yes, yes, I am.
Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars
Princess Lilli escapes the royal palace during a royal birth and heads undetected to New York, where she’s living a double life as a social media influencer, lusting after the guy staying in the hotel room next door, and having steamy sex with a masked dude at a charity ball. That pretty much sums up the first few chapters of Royal Escape, and Lilli and Jesse’s story just snowballs from there!

Lilli — as Ellie/Indigo Flame — has a pretty good thing going for a while in New York. She just gets to be an ordinary girl when she’s with Jesse, and she treasures the freedom. I loved that she was able to find her way around Manhattan and fend for herself, and wasn’t this damsel in distress. But eventually, Lilli is discovered by her Pickle in-laws, and her grand escape plan comes to an end when she’s dragged back home in front of mom and dad, aka the King and Queen. But will Lilli and Jesse get their happy ending?

There are a lot of sweet moments between Lilli and Jesse as they get to know one another, and this book was definitely steamier than the other books in the Pickleverse. It’s a lot of fun, a little campy, and captures the zeitgeist with an inside look at the life of a social media influencer. Royal Escape also brings in the cast of characters that we’ve gotten to know — and all of the antics that come along with them.

Ooh, I love a book where the hero has been wronged and the heroine is the one who has to grovel. A marriage of convenience becomes one very much of inconvenience when two and a half years later, Emmett wants to move on but Blakeley won’t sign the divorce papers!

Give Me Love picks up at Brielle and Spencer’s party, where Blakely arrived and announced that she and Emmett were married… Blake and Emmett’s book is full of so many ups and downs. He loves her so much, and she loves him too but is so afraid to let down those walls. These characters have been through so much — both together and on their own — and their story is so well-written. Even though solving a crime is what initially brought Blake to Rose Canyon, winning back her husband soon becomes just as important and I loved the journey these two characters went on.

In Give Me Love, Corinne Michaels continues the thread of the mystery that started in Help Me Remember, and we get to spend lots of time with the rest of this group of friends. I am dying for Hunter and Addie to get together, so please don’t make us wait too long!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars
I am absolutely loving the Southern Wedding series by Natasha Madison, and adore Clarabella and Luke’s story in Mine to Cherish. What a romantic tale of a second chance with the one that got away!

Clarabella and Luke have such a great chemistry, so it was easy for me to root for them as the endgame even though she’s engaged to someone else when they cross paths again. And it was only six months ago that they crossed the line of their friendship, so they are both still at the forefront of each other’s minds. Because of that connection, I hate to say that this story is a rebound romance. Because Luke and Clarabella should have been together all along. Edward was never right for her, and that was super obvious.

When Luke offers Clarabella an escape plan from her wedding, their time alone at his cabin provides them with a forced reason to reconnect. They approach their resumed romance with a lot of transparency in their communication, and though they each allow anger and hurt to overcome them a few times, they are quick to apologize and set things right, which I found refreshing.

I thought the last chapter was a bit rushed, to be honest, but NM made up for it with the two epilogues!

Bring on Presley and Bennett! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

I calmed his demons.

He created mine.

Macon Davis.

My best friend’s brother.

My tormentor.

My least favorite person.

Pothead. Delinquent.

A careless, directionless loser.

That’s what I used to believe,

but I didn’t really know him.

And when I finally saw him,

it was the best and worst thing to ever happen to me.

We burned hot and fast.

Passion. Anger. Love. Pain.

We were reckless. Naive.

We were doomed from the start.

When I finally saw Macon Davis for who he was,

We both went down in the flames.

The Love of My Next Life is part one of a duet.

It is just as much a love story as it is a tale of ruin.

While the duet will end with an HEA, book one does not.

Book two is set to release in October 2022.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars
Wow. Macon and Lennon’s story is a doozy. I read this book in a day because it was one of those stories that I just had to keep reading “one more chapter” — and the next thing I knew, it was 1 am.

This story is definitely not sunshine and rainbows. It’s dark and gritty, and Macon does some despicable things. Not that it’s an excuse for his behavior, but the dude has some serious demons.

The push and pull between these two drove me crazy, which I’m sure was Benson’s intention. Two steps forward, five steps back. Mostly because Macon is such a broken hero… and don’t we all secretly love that? I felt every emotion that these two went through. How conflicted Lennon was about her feelings for Macon, how he struggles with falling for his sister’s best friend when he shouldn’t. I felt so much for these two with the life twist that affects them just when things are going well and the betrayal that follows. So much angst and family drama wrapped up in a slow-burn romance!

There are trigger warnings that Benson lays out for the readers, so beware that this story deals with some sensitive subjects. And that ending was a fabulous cliffhanger to set up the rest of this duet!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
