Sunny Shelly’s Review: Stunner by Jessica Prince

Title: Stunner
Series: Whiskey Dolls
Author: Jessica Prince

Contemporary Romance; Small Town Romance; RomCom; Best Friend’s Ex

Never in a million years did I think I’d be jilted on my wedding day.

Around the time Asher Rose was supposed to say “I do”, she was bellied up to a bar full of bikers, three sheets to the wind and feeling sorry for herself. The last person she expected to come to her rescue was Owen Shields.

He was tattooed, broody, and her ex-fiancé’s best friend. The arrogant jerk who was supposed to be the best man at her wedding was never supposed to be her knight in shining armor.

Falling for Owen was never part of the plan, but when the gorgeous town vet throws everything he has her way, including his adorable dog and angelic niece, Asher is in for the fight of her life.

“Hi,” he said, low and gravelly.

I turned on him, making sure to narrow my eyes into slits, determined to gain my anger back after meeting the lovely Hazel, because I’d be damned if I let him get away with the silent treatment he’d been subjecting me to.

It wasn’t easy, especially not with the contrition swimming in those green eyes, but I held firm. “‘Hi’? Seriously? You’ve been ghosting me for three days and that’s how you’re going to start?”

He stepped in closer, his delicious smell making my head all fuzzy. “You look beautiful.”

Oh, he was good. Damn it! Stay strong, Asher! I silently scolded. I blew past the compliment like I hadn’t heard it, even while flutters erupted in my chest.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I pretty much devoured Stunner. From the first chapter to the very last, I fell head over heels with Owen and Asher as a couple and could not for the life of me figure out why she wasn’t with him from the get-go!

All those nasty stares he’d been giving her for the past year? Yeah, Owen was half in love with her. And when she got jilted on her wedding day by his best friend (whose name is escaping me right now, so if that isn’t proof that he wasn’t the guy Asher was supposed to be with, I don’t know what is!) Owen saw an opening to be Asher’s friend. And when more grew out of that friendship, well, then that was just the icing on the cake! Drama arises when her ex wants her back, but everything works out exactly the way it is supposed to!

This book was swoony and sexy, complete with a broody, tatted hero who lets his niece give him makeovers. There was so much to love about Owen and Asher!

Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. That’s why God created central air, after all.

Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boy–she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.

In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. Not that she’d expect a boy to understand.

Jessica has been writing since she was a little girl, but thankfully grew out of drawing her own pictures for her stories before ever publishing her first book. Because an artist she is not.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: My Brother’s Forbidden Friend by Piper Rayne

My Brother’s Forbidden Friend by Piper Rayne is now live!

I’ve gone from crushing on my brother’s best friend to wanting to crush him.

Cameron Baker and I have a few things in common. The first being that we were both born and raised in our small Alaskan town. Second, is that we hide our feelings and keep our hearts closed off from anyone who could break them.

But hiding my feelings is harder to do with Cam than most. When I was five years old, grieving the loss of my mother, he showed me how big his heart is, and I’ve never forgotten.

He comes from the richest family in town. Cam’s bad boy gorgeous, flirts like he has a Doctorate in charm, and he’s my brother’s best friend. That last part is where it gets tricky and the sole reason we’ve never crossed the line.

Now, his parents have cut him off to force him to prove himself. I never thought he’d open a competing business to mine. So, I do what I do best, shove all my feelings aside and ready myself to crush him. Game on.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Greene family series comes to a wonderful conclusion with Chevelle and Cameron’s story and it was so worth the wait! I have been not-so-patiently waiting for this brother’s best friend romance, and the story that Piper Rayne delivered checked every box!

There is a great use of the history between Chevelle and Cam in this story, and how their friendship (and her crush on him) was born the day of her mom’s funeral when she was swinging on a swing in the backyard wearing a purple dress. Their mother’s death impacted Chevelle in such a different way than it did the rest of her siblings — first, she was the youngest, and second, Laurie drowned trying to rescue her from falling through the ice. Chevelle has carried around that guilt for so very long, and Cam always *saw* her in a way that the rest of her family didn’t.

While Cam has a reputation for being a playboy, he was all in once he realized that he could no longer deny his feelings for Chevelle — and that she felt the same way even though she was afraid to acknowledge it and lose him the way that she lost her mother. Cam was so swoony as he set out to convince Chevelle that they should legitimately see where their attraction led them, and his meeting with Fisher and the rest of the brothers to ask their permission was just so sweet!

These two characters really bring out the best in one another. In Chevelle, Cam had the unwavering support he needed to make his secret dream a reality. And with Cam by her side, Chevelle was able to let go of the guilt she’s been carrying around for far too long and believe that she deserved to happiness.

I LOVED how the swing, the lake where Laurie Green drowned, and the color purple all tied into Cam and Chevelle’s happily ever after at the end of this book!

Well done, ladies! I received a complimentary copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Heart of Stone by KK Allen

Release Date: September 27

Benson Bexley has a heart of stone.

Apparently, nothing changes.

When he returns home after a decade gone, I recognize him right away.

How could I forget him?

He’s the same cocky flirt who slid dirty poetry to me in art class.

With the same stone-cold stare that shields his soul from the world.

And that same sharp-edged jaw that cuts straight through a heart like a dagger.

Fortunately, I see right through his arrogant charm.

Even better, he doesn’t remember who I am.

And I have no intention of reminding him.

After all, it’s only a matter of time until his nomadic life takes him away again.

When he relentlessly pursues me, I devise an evil plan.

Play along with his dirty, poetic charm.

And then give him a taste of his own medicine.

Revenge.

It’s not in my nature.

But Benson Bexley deserves nothing less.

It’s time for that heart of stone to shatter.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars
Holy moly, broody hero! Benson and Brooklyn are on fire in Heart of Stone. I really, really, REALLY didn’t like this dude when I started reading this book, but that was the point. Because KK Allen somehow made a totally despicable guy into a swoony hero by the end of this book. Benson’s character went through such a transformation, and I was rooting for him to get the girl.

A constant thread throughout the Camp Bexley series is how a family tragedy impacted the lives of the brothers, and Benson was hit hard after his twin brother died. As a result, he’s become a guarded, cocky, aloof man and when he returns to town after a decade away and doesn’t remember Brooklyn — the girl whose heart he crushed — she takes an opportunity to get some payback.

Of course, things don’t go quite as Brooklyn planned because, underneath that cocky exterior, Benson is a tortured soul in a prison of his own making. I loved the journey that Benson and Brooklyn went on in finding peace and a happily ever after. Heart of Stone is a wonderful story of redemption, forgiveness and second-chances, all wrapped up in a heartwarming love story.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Tysin by Brooke O’Brien

 Release Date: September 23

Tysin Briggs is a player.

He’s cocky, selfish, and sexy as sin. I’ve heard the rumors, and it’s no secret, he’s just as talented in the bedroom as he is on the guitar.

As the lead guitarist for A Rebels Havoc, and my brother’s best friend, Tysin has heartbreak written all over him. We were asking for trouble sneaking around behind my brother’s back. It still didn’t stop me from spending the summer with him or from falling in love with him.

Two years have passed since he destroyed my heart, crushing it into a million pieces. A lot has changed since then, including the ring on my finger. When my brother asks for my help filling in as the manager of their sold-out tour, it’s an opportunity I can’t refuse.

I should’ve known the past wouldn’t stay in the past.

But what I didn’t count on was how hard it would be to resist him.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Kyla and Tysin’s story is messy and angsty. So much tension, so much history, so much heartache and pain.

Admittedly, I didn’t like Tysin much at the beginning of this story, but as I got to know him, I saw him as a yummy tortured hero. He’d been put down for so long by everyone in his life, and was such a broken soul. His selfishness and arrogance are acts of self-preservation, and Kyla is the one person he’s ever let see his vulnerable side. And that scared the crap out of him.

I loved the intensity of the first Rebels book (Brix), and I thought that Tysin was a good match on that level. This story deals with some sensitive topics like alcoholism and pregnancy loss (which was hard for me to read personally). Somehow, Brooke O’Brien manages to juggle those heavy topics with lots of sexy steam in a beautiful second-chance romance!

Excerpt

“One dance.” Even as the words left my mouth, I knew it was probably a lie. From his scuffed boots to the way his shirt strained against the muscles of his shoulders, everything about him was my type. Carefree. Charming. Dangerous. A mixture of small-town boy and wild, roguish charm. There was just something that told me if he asked for a second dance, I’d say yes.
My heels pinched my toes, but it was a familiar feeling, so I stuffed the discomfort down and concentrated on the ruggedly handsome man in front of me. God was he beautiful. His dark hair was long around his ears, curling the tiniest amount at the ends. I couldn’t tell if the stubble on his cheeks was intentional or if he’d just not bothered with a shave, and I could see how easily the local girls must moon over him. His movements were slow. Languid. Even the casual way he moved across the room screamed, Big Dick Energy.
But it was his smile that did me in. It was all white teeth and earnest charm.
As the music pumped from the speakers, his solid arms pulled me around the dance floor. Despite not knowing the steps, he led with confidence, his hand at my lower back, pushing and pulling me into the correct position. From the outside, it may have even looked like we knew what we were doing.
I let myself smile at him. Not the polished, demure smile that had been drilled into me since I was young, but my real, too-wide smile that rarely appeared.
He didn’t have a clue.
When he’d made the comment about rolling out the red carpet, I thought maybe he knew, but the flash of recognition never came—that dawn of realization when someone discovers I am the Madison Colt. It wasn’t there.
Maybe Des was right about my hair after all. Dyeing my typically platinum-blonde hair back to my natural auburn was an act of defiance and a night of one-too-many glasses of red wine, but it did a damn fine job hiding the fact that a celebrity was drinking watered-down cocktails and dancing with the sexiest man in the bar.
For the briefest moment, I was free of her.
As the song died down, Josh kept his strong hands planted at my lower back, our hips pressed together. We’d laughed and stood, breathing in each other’s air, as the room continued to dance around us.
His hand stroked up my back as he leaned toward a table of people staring in our direction. “Come hang out for a minute.”
I wanted to. More than anything I wanted to be Effie Pierce, normal girl passing through town. A thousand reasons to stay flipped through my mind. I could enjoy a night out, free of the expectations and schedules and rigidity of my life. I could be a different version of me.
Until someone recognized me.
They always did.
I smiled up at him. “I should go.” I pulled away and took measured strides toward the door.
“Wait a second,” he called at my back. “Can I see you again? Get your number?”
I closed my eyes as the pang of what-ifs shot through me. But I knew how this ended. If I left now, I’d be saving myself from the uncomfortable conversation later. “Thank you for the dance.”
“Effie.”
My name was liquid over gravel in his throat. I flushed with heat as he leaned over me.
Kiss me. Kiss me and I’ll stay.
We stayed locked.
Waiting.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

The Rebel is another great installment in Lena Hendrix’s Redemption Ranch series. I really was expecting Gemma and Scott’s story to be next, so having Josh be the hero in a book was a pleasant surprise.

“I love you and I see you.”

Josh and Effie’s relationship is so effortless, and I love the connection that they later realized they had from when they were kids. They both have demons that they are battling, but they can be their most authentic selves when they are with each other. They are both so accustomed to keeping their vulnerable side hidden away, but truly opened up the more time they spent around each other. Effie is really struggling in her Hollywood life as mega movie star Madison Cot, but when she’s on the ranch in Tipp, she’s relaxed and literally a different person when she gets to be just Effie. Josh is so sweet and caring… yet that cowboy is a dirty talker! Who knew?? This book had some serious spice compared to Lena’s other books!

This story is set about two years after The Alias takes place, so it was great seeing where Parker/Sienna, Evan/Val are a few years into the future!

I can’t wait to read Gemma’s story! I received a complimentary copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Northern Stars by Brittainy Cherry

Hollywood’s biggest star first belonged to me.

Breaking up with your high school sweetheart was one thing.

Breaking up with Hollywood’s favorite actor? That was a different situation.

I’d been in love with Aiden Walters since I was a little girl. We’d grown up as neighbors in small town Wisconsin. I knew him inside and out, and he knew every single piece of me. I was there when his career took off, and I was almost certain I’d always be a part of his life.

It wasn’t until a scandal broke out that I was forced to end things with Aiden. He didn’t take it very well. The boy I once loved began to hate me. He went off to California to leave all of his past behind—including me.

Five years later, he was back in town for the next few months taking care of some family business. He was staying in the only hotel in our small town. The hotel I now oversaw. For the next few months, I’d be forced to cater to the man whose heart I’d broken all those years ago. The man who resented me. The man who swore he’d never speak to me again.

Now that he was back in town, in constant connection with me, I had to keep reminding myself daily of why I ended things with him in the first place. Otherwise, I’d find myself falling in love with him all over again. Only this time, I was certain that if I fell, he wouldn’t be willing to catch me.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Compass series by Brittainy Cherry comes to a wonderful close with Nothern Stars. Hailee and Aiden were absolutely made for each other — not just in the romantic sense, but in the soul-deep, “I’m your person” sense. From the time they were little kids sneaking out of their bedrooms to watch the stars in the night sky together, she had been a balm to his soul, and he is her fiercest protector.

When they cross paths five years after she broke his heart, the anger and love and hurt and betrayal that Aiden has for Hailee jumps off the page. BC does a phenomenal job of exploring all of those emotions with these characters, as well as describing Aiden’s anxiety and panic attacks and the mental stress he’s under as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand stars. A role that he doesn’t know if he even wants anymore. Added to that are Hailee’s insecurities about her role in Aiden’s life (both as a teen and a young adult) since she’s a curvy girl who doesn’t fit into the typical mold of the type of girl a Hollywood hunk should be with.

This book is full of angst and an emotional push and pull as Aiden grapples with wanting to have Hailee back in his life again but needing to keep her away because he doesn’t want to be hurt again.

There’s also a great twist with Aiden’s parentage, and how it ties him to Damian from Western Waves (#3). Having read this entire series, I loved catching up with Jax, Connor, and Damian, and seeing how effortlessly Aiden fits in as the fourth point of this chosen family.

While Aiden and Hailee’s story in Northern Stars will rip you apart and then put you back together again, it is a wonderful story of true love conquering all! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Once Forbidden, Twice Shy by Carrie Aarons

Once Forbidden, Twice Shy by Carrie Aarons is live!

Running from your problems only brings you hurtling face first into even worse baggage.

After experiencing a brutal trauma in New York that I’d rather bury than address, escaping to a new job in London seems like the perfect solution. That was before I was introduced to my new boss, who is none other than my brother’s best friend. You know, the one I’ve been head-over-heels in love with forever.

Jack Merrick had been my crush since I knew what one was. For years we fought the feelings; I didn’t want to humiliate myself and his excuse was not betraying my brother or parents, who had accepted him as their own. Then, the night of my college graduation party, he undressed me in my childhood bedroom and confirmed that there was no one else on this earth for him but me.

When I woke the next morning he was gone, off to take a job as a coder halfway around the world. Four years and a mangled heart later, Jack is the last person I expect to see in London, and something close to fate is tricking me into thinking this is more than a coincidence. Our shared love of programming has always connected us, but now it’s the thing we’re weaponizing to get back at each other.

Until one night, when the emotional scars from my attack resurface and he’s the only one to witness a massive breakdown. He coaxes out my secrets and swears to love and protect me like he couldn’t before. But with everything stacked against us, I’m not sure we can ever have what we’ve always dreamed of.

Except just as we’re beginning to tackle those obstacles, I learn the truth of why he left all those years ago. And suddenly there may be no future for us at all.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Once Forbidden, Twice Shy was unputdownable! I devoured Jack and Taylor’s romance, and it hit all the sweet spots.

I wanted to hate Jack for ditching Taylor and breaking her heart. I really did. But the guy is just a grump nursing a broken heart himself and I fell in love with him so quickly! He knows he was a coward for ghosting Taylor the way that he did, and he spends this book groveling to make it up to her. And I was there for it! But it wasn’t just Jack’s groveling that I loved about this book. I thought Carrie Aarons did a marvelous job of handling the delicate situation with her assault and the anxiety she’s now living with, as well as Jack’s guilt over having contracted an STD in the past.

There are so many hurdles for these two to overcome: her brother/his best friend, her mistrust of him and feelings of betrayal, Jack’s medical diagnosis, the company they work for frowning upon co-workers dating, Jack not wanting to ruin his relationship with Taylor’s family since his own parents were so neglectful…. There is a to unpack in this story and Carrie Aarons does a marvelous job of weaving it all together!

This story — the high emotions, the angst, the years of history between them — is everything that I look for and love about the brother’s best friend trope. Well done!

Lights. Camera. Action
I’ve got everything it takes to make it in Tinseltown: confidence, charisma, and a killer chin. Now all I need is a chance.
But Los Angeles is full of hot, young hunks, and talent might not be enough to separate me from the cookie-cutter crowd.
Well, you know what they say: fake it till you make it.
So I devise a wild scheme to get noticed. Pretend I’m someone I’m not—goodbye Will O’Connell of Cincinnati and hello Liam O’Connell of Dublin.
‘Liam’ and his talent with accents is enough to get myfoot in the door, but I never anticipated meeting the woman who has me more worried about keeping my foot out of my mouth.
Enter Raven Locke, the dark-haired bombshell who puts the ‘tude in tattooed.
On set, she’s the costumer tasked with fitting my pants, but all I can think about is how to get into hers.
As my — I mean, Liam’s — budding career begins to heat up, so do our feelings.
While Raven pursues her passion for fashion; I chase her heart.
Our picture-perfect screenplay seems sure to send us riding off onto Sunset Boulevard… Until Raven finds out that Comedy and Tragedy aren’t the only masks I’m wearing. Our romance might be destined for the cutting room floor, unless I can salvage our story with a plot twist she won’t see coming.

*This first-person, male-POV rom-com has it all: lots of heat, plenty of heart, and a Hollywood-worthy HEA.

The Chameleon Effect is a solid debut novel from one of Romancelandia’s most popular audio narrators, Joe Arden. I thought Arden did a great job in writing Will’s story and creating a world where the main character struggles with guilt over pretending to be someone he’s not.

Liam and Raven have an instant connection, and I bought it. This book has all the spice and steam, but is still charming and sweet. I also really enjoyed being inside Will’s head, and getting a firsthand look at his struggles to make it as an actor, balancing his desire for a career 8 years in the making with building a relationship based on a fake identity. What a quandary!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I thought there were some instances where Arden’s writing style was a bit too wordy in his descriptions, but that will improve with time. The Chameleon Effect is a sexy, hot fake identity romance from a guy who has his own secret identity! I definitely want to check this book out in audio and hear Arden do Liam’s Irish brogue!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Shattered Sea by Catherine Cowles

He was the last person she expected to fall for…

Shattered Sea, a sexy, suspenseful, small town romance from USA Today bestselling author Catherine Cowles, is out now!

I’ve known every kind of pain. Of the heart. Of the body. Of the soul. All I want now is the freedom that comes from making my art.

The last thing I expected was Hollywood royalty to waltz into my gallery in a small town in the middle of nowhere and see me.

A man like Boden Cavanaugh shouldn’t understand me. Shouldn’t be able to soothe my most ragged edges. Even worse, he makes me want the one thing I can’t have. Him.

All it takes is one spark, and friendship catches flame. But as our attraction burns bright, there are forces desperate to send us back into the darkness. And they’ve already killed before…

Keep reading for a look inside Shattered Sea!

The way Boden’s muscles tightened told me the little he’d shared was only the tip of the iceberg. That tension called to me, and I reached out, kneading the flesh along his shoulders. His head fell to my own shoulder, and he sighed. “I’ll only let you do that forever.”

I chuckled. “I do have the magic touch.”

“You could be making millions with those hands.”

“I only use them on very special recipients. They aren’t for sale.”

Boden straightened, but as he did, he came closer. Our faces were close. Lips just a breath away. The urge to lean forward, to know what he felt like, tasted like, was strong. Boden’s hand skated up my arm to my neck to tangle in my hair.
I knew that Boden Cavanaugh was more than dangerous. But like a moth to a flame, I kept getting closer.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Tattered & Torn series keeps getting better and better! While each book thus far in this series has been raw and emotional and gritty, there was something just *extra* about Laiken and Boden in Shattered Sea. These two broken souls both have experienced so much pain in their lives. Laiken hides her pain behind her art, and Bo hides his behind the mask he wears as a Hollywood moviestar. But when they cross paths at the gallery Laiken manages in Wolf Gap, there is an undeniable thread that pulls these two together.

As with all of Catherine Cowles’ books in this series, there is an element of suspense involved, and I must admit that I was shocked by the plot twist when it was revealed.

Cowles has a gift for weaving together an intriguing story full of heart and heat while including heartache, pain, and healing. Boden and Laiken were a perfect match in every way, and audio narrators Ava Erickson and Sebastian York magnificently brought these broken characters to life.

Now I am on pins and needles waiting for Shiloh and Ramsey’s story next! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Stay Over by Kaylee Ryan

Stay Over by Kaylee Ryan is now live!

Brooks

Overhearing my cousin’s best friend confessing that she’s never been satisfied wasn’t my fault… but offering to help her change that definitely was. Her brother is a friend of mine, and while this has a bad idea written all over it, it doesn’t stop us from becoming friends… with benefits.

Palmer is gorgeous, off-limits, and stubborn as hell. For the first time, I’m the one left wanting more.

I’m tired of watching her walk away. I’m ready for her to stay.

Palmer

I never dreamed having my crush overhear my most embarrassing confession would land me in his bed… or that I would want to stay there.

But our secret relationship has rules. No strings. No expectations. No feelings. What’s that saying about rules? Oh yeah, they’re meant to be broken.

But when it comes to Brooks, I’m afraid if I’m not the one to walk away, it won’t be just the rules broken.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Stay Over is a great start to a new series by Kaylee Ryan! Technically, the series begins with Stay Always, a novella in the Ten First Dates anthology, but Stay Over is the first full-length novel in the Kincaid Brothers series.

I fell in love with the Kincaid Brothers when I read Never With Me, and I was fully prepared to commit to a series featuring nine rowdy brothers. And Brooks and Palmer’s story did not disappoint! Palmer is the sister of Deacon from Never With Me, and Brooks is Ramsey’s cousin. She’s always had a crush on Brooks, her older brother’s best friend, and takes the opportunity to hang out with him the night of Ramsey and Deacon’s engagement party, where this book begins.

Over the next few weeks, Brooks and Palmer forge a friendship all of their own, with a sizzling attraction simmering underneath. That turns into a friends with benefits hookup, and eventually a secret relationship. I loved how Brooks was kinda slapped in the face with his attraction to Palmer. It completely caught him off guard, and I loved that he didn’t know what to do with his feelings at first.

Of course, the drama between them could have been avoided if they were just honest with each other about how they were feeling, but then we wouldn’t have gotten those super sweet last few chapters where they reunite!

I adored this story and can’t wait to see what comes next for the Kinkaid brothers!! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
