Book Blitz: The Attraction Equation by Kadie Scott

The Attraction Equation
Kadie Scott
(Love Undercover #2)
Published by: Entangled: Lovestruck
Publication date: November 13th 2017
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Romance

She’s the exception to his every rule…

FBI agent Max Carter lives his life by a strict set of rules—rules that don’t allow for distraction, deviation…or a relationship. But tell that to his matchmaking mama. To avoid yet another set-up, he announces he has a girlfriend. And now has to produce said girlfriend at Christmas dinner. Maybe Santa has a suitable actress in that red bag of his…

Gina Castillo is about to break her building’s iron-clad “no pets” policy to give her little brother the perfect Christmas gift—a dog. Too bad Max, the most inconveniently sexy tenant in the building, catches her red handed. Gina expects to be evicted, but instead finds herself blackmailed into playing the role of his girlfriend.

Two lies plus one dog should equal a hot mess of a holiday, but attraction and Christmas magic might just defy the rules…

EXCERPT:

But then…footsteps. Headed her way. She hopped away from the door and looked frantically around the room. Nope, still nowhere to hide.

Oh, God. I am so busted.

Only one day of breaking the building’s No Pets rule and now she was going to have to find her best friend another place to live.

Yep. I’m so totally screwed.

Her heart decided it wanted out of this hot mess and went for the escape hatch up her throat, but lodged there as the door opened.

Max stood there. Just Max.

They stared at each other for a long moment before she leaned to the side to peer around him. No Super lurking in the halls. No nosy neighbors. No animal control person threatening to take away the dog. They were alone.

“I took care of it,” he said.

Gina did her best to swallow her heart back into its rightful place in her chest as she stared at him. “What does that mean?”

His mouth tilted at one corner. “I didn’t dump their bodies in the river, if that’s what you’re thinking.”

Ha. Ha. Now the man was a comedian. She waited for a real answer.

Max shrugged. “I told them I tripped and fell, then I sent them on their way.”

The guy had been in the middle of yelling at her, or his silently fuming version of it. Why on earth would he cover for her?

For the second time that night, she got the distinct impression he was trying not to smile, despite how his expression didn’t change at all, other than a sardonically lifted eyebrow. Her expression must’ve reflected the combination of incredulity, relief, and suspicion that was going on inside her.

“You’re welcome, by the way,” he added.

Gina squeezed the dog close to her chest, stroking its soft fur for comfort. “Thank you,” she acknowledged belatedly.

“Your secret is safe with me…for now.”

Damn. She should’ve known her head was still on the chopping block. “What do you mean, for now?”

“I took care of it, but if you want me to keep taking care of it, I need something from you.”

Yup. Here came the axe. Gina edged away, nerves and disappointment both dogging her steps. Hottie McBlackmailer turned out to be a perv. She lifted her chin. “I’m not sleeping with you.”

Max crossed his arms, and she swallowed at the sight of defined muscles under the fine material of his shirt. “I don’t want sex.”

She stopped scooting back and eyed him, trying to determine how serious he was. “No?”

Max slammed her with a charming smile, one that softened the harsher lines of his face and had her stomach fluttering in response. However, like in the hall earlier, his blue-eyed gaze remained distant, and she didn’t quite trust that I-have-my-own-agenda light in his eyes.

“No,” he said. “I want you to pretend to be my girlfriend.”

Author Bio:

Award-winning contemporary romance author, Kadie Scott, grew up consuming books and exploring the world through her writing. She attempted to find a practical career related to her favorite pastime by earning a degree in English Rhetoric (Technical Writing). However, she swiftly discovered that writing without imagination is not nearly as fun as writing with it.

No matter the genre, she loves to write witty, feisty heroines, sexy heroes who deserve them, and a cast of lovable characters to surround them (and maybe get their own stories). She currently resides in Austin, Texas, with her own personal hero, her husband, and their two children, who are growing up way too fast.

BLURB
A hot summer night is perfect for feeling your way in the dark…

For urban-legend hunter and television host Gabe Powers, it’s business—investigate the most notorious haunted places in Savannah. Then he meets his new sound engineer, a dewy Georgia peach who may just turn this gig into (im)pure pleasure. All it takes is one night for them to conjure floor-rattling, wall-banging moans…but they’re not from the ghosts.

Blame the rippling abs, the cocky swagger, the granite jawline, the whole muscle-bulging package, but Gabe is bringing out good-girl Lily Jameson’s dirty side. Damn her code-of-conduct contract—this isn’t just a molten-hot fling.

There’s just one kink in the relationship they’ve been avoiding: soon they’ll be going their separate ways. Lily’s home is in Savannah, and Gabe is a globe-trotter at heart. For them to be together, they’ll both have to upend their so-very-different worlds and face their fears in the process. And suddenly things don’t feel so Georgia peachy keen at all.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

He literally travels the globe looking for urban legends. She’s perfectly content to stay in Savannah for the rest of her life. Is their instalove enough?

I really liked the meet-cute in Do You Feel It Too? Gabe and Lily cross paths and he sees fireworks. Literally. It’s July 4th. But then they find out that she’s the sound engineer his manager’s hired to help him with a TV pilot, hunting Savannah’s ghosts and haunted legends, and their connection really skyrockets into something off the charts. But when his gig is done, he’ll be on to the next one and is Lily willing to take what she can get in the time that they have together and then watch him walk away? Neither one of them was looking for love, but that’s exactly what they found in one another. But can they reach a compromise with their very different lives?

I fell in love with Gabe and Lily from the start. They had an incredible meet-cute; the comments made by her parrot, The General, were hysterical; and the part where Gabe babysits her nephew really sealed the deal for him being a pretty great book boyfriend.

I really enjoyed the fact that Gabe and Lily weren’t “broken” characters who find healing in one another. Rather, they are both pretty content in their respective lives, but when their worlds are both turned upside down in meeting the other, they struggle to find a common ground. There is no major drama between them, no other woman/other man drama, some pretty steamy (tho unsafe!) sex, and a pretty darn good epilogue.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

DYFIT Teaser 2

EXCERPT
He wrapped his arms around me, sliding one hand up along the back of my neck to keep me close. Running his thumb down my cheek, he held my hair back from my face. The laughter and playfulness were gone. Now he was back where I’d seen him in the bedroom. Greedy and serious. His palm grasped my tush in a delightfully possessive way. “Ouija speaks the truth. I do want you. So bad.”

“Me too,” I whispered back, but then I realized how confusing that sounded. “I mean, I want you. Not I want—”

He kissed me to shut me up. His hands gripped my body, and his tongue swept mine aside. Straddling him on my knees on the sofa, I felt him hard underneath me. I tipped my hips into him, with nothing but my panties and his chinos between us. This kiss was different than the one in the bedroom earlier. This was like a slow drizzle of caramel all through me. Just as the room began to spin, and just as I started to reach for his belt, he broke us apart, pulling my head back slightly with his fingers knotted into my hair. He nudged my cheek with his nose and said, “I’m gonna take you upstairs, Lily. And rock your fucking world.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Bryce, by Jeannine Colette & Lauren Runow

We’re celebrating the release of BRYCE: A Sexton Brothers Novel by Jeannine Colette and Lauren Runow! Add it to your TBR and ONE-CLICK today!

Title: Bryce: A Sexton Brothers Novel
Age Group: Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: November 15, 2018

Book Description
“Truth or dare?”

“I’ll take your dare.”

“Kiss me.”I don’t believe in Prince Charming, but when I met a handsome stranger on a rooftop his words intrigued me and his dares left nothing but temptation.

Then I learned the truth.

His name is Bryce Sexton. Media mogul, workaholic and a heart of stone. He’s broody AF and yet every woman in San Francisco wants him.

So why won’t he leave me alone?

Wherever I go, he’s there, trying to force his way into my world. What he doesn’t know is I already have a man in my life. A tiny redhead who loves Legos and Superheroes.

With every push, Bryce pulls me in further. Our pasts are laced with betrayal. Our futures are unpredictable. Our chemistry is explosive.

With each dare I uncover a truth, but he’s exactly what I don’t need right now.

So why did I have to go and kiss him?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I love a good romance where a workaholic is brought to his knees by the last woman he ever expected to fall for. That’s exactly what happens to Bryce when he meets single mom Tessa. I loved her sass and strength, and watching the closed-off guy fall in love with her and her son Charlie warmed my heart.

Watching him kind of fumble through a relationship, not knowing the right thing to say or do all the time, was rather endearing. And even Tessa wasn’t looking for love when she met him, so he really worked hard at getting her to let her guard down.

Bryce is a standalone in the Sexton Brothers series, and while the stories take place at the same time, there is a bit of crossover but not to the point where you need to know what happened in the last book, Austin, to enjoy this one.

Another great collab from this duo and I can’t wait to see what happens next! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

NOW AVAILABLE!

“Tell me a secret.”

“I’m falling for you.”

Austin Sexton is the man I’ve always tried to stay away from. He’s arrogant, entitled and a total ass. That’s why I didn’t bother giving him my name last night. We’ll never see each other again.

Or so I thought.

Imagine my surprise when I start my new job only to come face-to-face with the blue eyes I just declared all wrong for me. No, he’s not my boss, but being my boss’ brother seems almost worse.

No matter how hard I try to push him away, his secrets draw me in. When it comes to a Sexton that could be lethal…for my heart.

I have his secrets and I won’t tell a soul. Now I just have to not fall for him completely.

Football.

That’s all Liam Walsh knows how to do and if he were being honest, all he was ever really good at. Dedicating his entire life to the game has taken him to some pretty remarkable places and in less than twelve seconds it had also brought him within inches of his life. Taking a careless approach to his recovery hasn’t exactly been the best game plan he’d ever conjured up, but that didn’t mean management had to send an overbearing, spitfire assistant to get him back on the field. Certainly not one who favored stilettos and fine lingerie.

Emme McGovern believes in two things: Jesus and really good football.

An assistant on a national football team, she is constantly surrounded by men who think they can do her job better. Which is why she isn’t in the least bit surprised that the fate of her future now rests in the hands of a cranky, stubborn, arrogant football player on injured reserve. When Emme is offered an opportunity to make history, landing her and her Louboutin’s on Liam’s door step, what she finds isn’t just some football player. She doesn’t find a warm reception, either.

With the clock winding down, Emme is determined to piece Liam back together, but as their long days turn into even longer nights, the game no longer becomes about promotions or a comeback story, but a matter of life or death. Will their time together have them laying it all on the field for their future? Or will it send them both running and begging for mercy?

Mercy Teaser 2.jpg

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Mercy was an entertaining football romance between injured defensive back Liam and assistant manager Emme. He’s struggling and shutting down after an injury that could be career-ending when she’s sent by the team’s GM to essentially get him with his PT/recovery program. Her promotion depends on it.

Naturally, Liam hates the intrusion and having Emme be there as a babysitter, but eventually he sees that he is starting to feel better physically with her pushing him to his PT appointments, and he eases up on how nasty he is toward her. And because this is an enemies-to-lovers story, feelings soon develop between Liam and Emme. But she’s hiding from him the fact that her promotion to GM depends on him getting of of the injured reserve list… will her lie of omission end their romantic relationship before it really gets started?

Mercy Teaser 1
Mercy was a quite enjoyable story from a new-to-me author, proving that sometimes the thing you fear the most may lead to something you never knew that you wanted. Liam’s injury not only forces him to reevaluate his life’s goals, but it gives Emme a different perspective on the path her life is taking, and whether that’s what she really wants. And how adorable was surly Liam when it came to the sweet rescue dog! Love!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Throwing caution to the wind, I start inching deeper into the water. From full-ankle, to calf, then knee, finally stopping at my waist. What can I say? I’m still not ignorant nor relaxed enough to submerge myself all the way. I will stay waist-deep, thank you very much.

This isn’t so bad. Maybe I am a bit paranoid about the ocean. Why would a shark want to bite me anyway? I’ve got no meat on my bones, or so my mother would say. Besides, Cow Girl has more curves than I do anyway. Not to mention two meaty nuggets on her chest. If a shark should bite anyone, it should be her. Is that bad of me to say? Well, who gives a flying rat’s ass? I am in my relaxed state of mind. Nothing I say, or in this case think, can or will be counted against me whilst I’m relaxing.

I close my eyes yet again and start to sway back and forth. The saltwater sloshes around me, creating ripples amongst the foamy waves. The sounds of the waves mixed with the loud-beaked seagulls is the perfect mixtape for my relaxation time.

OUCH! Fuck, fuck, fuck! A shark just bit my left asscheek! I am asscheekless. I knew I shouldn’t have gone in the ocean. Now, I will never be able to sit again. What guy wants to tap a girl with half an ass? I can hear it now. Oh, baby, I can’t wait to turn you around and tap that sweet little…oh my God, where the fuck is your ass? My life is ruined. If I don’t die here, my life is over anyway. I will henceforth be known as Half-Ass Girl. That is the name that will be engraved on my tombstone when I die from the embarrassment, or the loss of blood from missing half my ass.

I open my eyes and scan the water, relieved to not see any pools of red blood around me. Okay, so maybe it wasn’t a shark bite, but my ass still burns like Hell. My heart beats faster as I tread my way onshore. When my feet hit the sand, I spot a nearby boulder to lean against, and saunter my way over there.

My ass really fucking hurts. I wiggle my baby blue bikini bottom and shriek as a gelatin-like creature plops out of it. A frickin’ jellyfish. I was stung by a frickin’ jellyfish. Just keep swimming my ass, Dory. This hurts like a mother.

On the horizon, I see a large silhouette coming towards me fast, and decide to call out to it.

“Help! Is anybody out there?”

The silhouette grows larger as it comes closer and closer. Because the sun is so damn bright, and I forgot to bring sunglasses, I can’t make out who it is until he is right on top of me.

“What’s wrong? What happened?” The deep British lilt makes my nipples pebble yet again. And since they are only covered by a bikini top that doesn’t leave much left to the imagination, they are highly noticeable.

“Whip your dick out, now!”

Sunny Shelly Reviews Pucked Love, by Helena Hunting

PuckedLoveBTBanner.jpg

Pucked Love, the final sexy and emotional standalone in the NYT bestselling Pucked Series from New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting, is available NOW!

PUCKEDLOVE_full_trim (1).jpg

As an NHL player, relationships haven’t been my thing. Shrouded in secrecy and speculation, they never last very long. But then that’s what happens when you require an NDA before the first date.

Until Charlene. She’s like a firefly. She’s elusive, and if you catch her she’ll burn bright, but keeping her trapped dulls her fire and dims her beauty.

I caught her. And as much as I might want to keep her, I’ll never put the lid on her jar. Not at the risk of losing her. So I’ve let her set the rules in our relationship.

But as long hidden secrets expose us both, I discover exactly how fragile Charlene is, and how much I need her.

We’re all broken. We’re all messed up. Some more than others. Me more than most.

Pucked Love Teaser 3 AN.jpg

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Pucked Love isn’t your typical romance. Darren and Charlene have been together for two years, and while they have a rather fulfilling sex life together, their romantic relationship leaves much to be desired. When the secret of their kinky sexcapades is exposed, Darren and Charlene find their relationship changing and both realize that they want more than what they have. But does the other want that as well?

It was interesting to see how these two handle the changing confines of their relationship. They are both incredibly broken, damaged people, and their broken parts do fit together well. He’s so emotionally stunted, he doesn’t know how to be a romantic boyfriend. The scenes where his friends are telling Darren how to show Charlene in a non-sexual way that he appreciates her were funny, but at the same time rather sad. I really enjoyed the growth that these two went through, especially as they dealt with their childhood secrets coming to life, and the effects those demons have on them as adults.

There are some mentions of BDSM in Pucked Love, but the sexy scenes are not at all explicit. Pucked Love is the final book in the Pucked series, and does read as a true standalone. I’ve only read a few books of the Pucked series, and I wasn’t left looking to fill in plot holes. Also, I loved seeing how close this group of friends are, and I loved the peek inside their collective HEAs with that epilogue! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt:

You’re turning twenty-six. It’s your champagne birthday, so we need to do something fun.” Violet bounces, making her boobs shake and my mimosa slosh perilously. “It should be themed! We can all wear leather chaps!”

“Could you be any more cliché?” I roll my eyes. “Just to be clear, Darren doesn’t own chaps.”

“Just a ball gag and a mask with no eye holes, according to Alex.”

And we’re back to my sex life. I knew I was getting off so easy.

I wonder if Darren is catching this kind of heat today. I seriously doubt it’s worse than what I’m getting since I don’t think his friends are likely to push his buttons, but I’ll have to ask when I speak to him next. I’m not sure when that will be, either. The message I sent about Gertrude was pretty straightforward and doesn’t necessarily require a response. Maybe I should’ve worded it differently.

Sunny raises her hand, like we’re all still in middle school and she’s waiting her turn to speak. “Wouldn’t a mask with no eyeholes be dangerous? You wouldn’t be able to see where you’re going.” Her eyes widen, and she looks around the room. “And what’s a ball gag?”

I honestly love that Sunny has grown up in this highly overinformed society and still manages to be innocent.

“Yeah, Char, wouldn’t a mask with no eyeholes be dangerous?” Violet props her fist on her chin and smiles. “And please, do explain what a ball gag is.”

“I’m not sure you really want the answer to that, Sunny.” Poppy gives me a look I can’t quite decipher.

Sunny twirls her hair around her finger. “Why not?”

“Where’s the harm in a little bondage-sex education? It’s not like Miller’s ever going to go out and buy either item for her. First of all, Alex would murder him, and secondly, I don’t think that’s Miller’s thing.”

Sunny’s face lights up, and she does jazz hands. “Oh! I think I know what Miller’s thing is!”

Lily grins. “Eating your cookie?”

“He really likes to do that, a lot. When my belly gets too big I’ll have to watch from the mirror.” She gets a faraway look in her eyes. “But he has another thing! Kind of like how you and Randy are always getting it on in bathrooms, except I think it’s a bit more sanitary.”

“And it doesn’t cause thousands of dollars of damage,” Violet adds.

Lily throws her hands up in the air. “That sink was already falling off the wall. It’s not my fault it broke!”

“That was one expensive orgasm,” I say.

“And Randy says it was worth every penny.” Lily’s smile is devious as she bites her knuckle, then turns to Sunny. “Anyway, back to Miller’s thing.”

Sunny wiggles around excitedly in her chair. “So Miller paints my toenails for me.”

“Miller’s thing is painting your toenails?”

“Yes. Well, no. I think he likes my toes.” Her fingers go to her lips, and she looks around the room, her cheeks flushing.

“Say what now?” Violet asks.

”Sometimes he kisses them.” She covers her mouth with her palm and says something unintelligible.

Violet sits forward in her chair. “Hold on a second, does Buck have a foot fetish?”

“Um, I don’t know.” Sunny looks worried now. “Is that weird? Is it, like, mask with no eyeholes kind of weird?”

Don’t sleep with your best friend.

Take it from me. I did it. And it was awful.

I-wish-the-tequila-made-me-forget kind of bad.

The problem is, Luke has forgotten. He swears that he can’t remember a thing about that night beyond the trays of tequila shots being set on the tables.

Except I can’t forget. I can’t forget how good his hands felt until I fell over and hit my hip on the dresser, and I sure as hell can’t forget the entire two minutes of tap-tap-squirt.

Awkward. Embarrassing. And the new subject of a couple of dirty lucid dreams.

But I have no intention of telling him what we did. Nothing good comes from telling your best friend he’s the worst guy you’ve ever slept with.

Which makes the tequila on my birthday a very, very bad idea…

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, FLOOR! This book was another fantastic romcom from Emma Hart. One drunken night chnages everything between Luke and Aspen — and it wasn’t even good sex. It was quick, drunk, bad sex! What I really liked about what happened afterwards is that Hart didn’t present them as a bona fide couple right afterwards. Things were messy and awkward and plain old weird as they both pretended nothing happened because they thought the other had no recollection.

The chemistry between Luke and Aspen was fabulous, and I couldn’t wait for them to get on the same page. But as they both struggled with their sudden feelings and whether or not they should cross the line into something more, Hart had me tied up in knots waiting for the payoff!

The characters had a great connection, and I loved how they really put an effort into dating one another once they realized that they had feelings for each other. Bliare was the perfect little matchmaker — and I feel like she and Tom had or should have a book of their own? But perhaps the best secondary character of all time came in Abuelita — Luke’s grandma was a riot!

Tequila, Tequila is one of the best best-friends romances I’ve read! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt:

Have you ever walked into a store and had to ask where the lady section is?”

I paused, my grip on the fridge door firm, and turned to him. I simply blinked. I wasn’t going to justify that with an answer.

“It took three people before a poor woman at the customer service desk took pity on me and walked me to the tampon aisle,” he went on, oblivious to my death stare. “She hovered over me for a second and I started fucking sweating, Aspen. Sweating.”

I bit my lip and moved the ingredients for his sandwich over to the board on the island.

“I almost dropped my phone trying to find the photo you sent me, and when I finally brought it up, I was so fucking confused I stood there like a lame damn duck for five minutes before she came back to help me like she knew I was a total idiot.”

Was it wrong that I was way more amused about this than anything else? A part of me told me I should feel bad, but…

“Did you know there are tons of those things? The boxes are all different. There are different brands. Different sizes. Different… absorbency levels.” He shuddered, his wide, muscled shoulders shaking with his cringey thought. “For flows and stuff.”

“I shop there regularly. I am aware.”

“Not that fucking regularly if you sent me to buy them,” he muttered. “Anyway, the nice lady who was trying her best not to laugh at the idiot in the sanitary products aisle asked me who I was buying them for. My mom, my sister, my girlfriend…”

I chopped the lettuce.

“When I told her it was for my best friend, she looked at me funny for a minute before nodding. Then, she dragged me over to the aisle with the candy and told me that Twizzlers went well with tampons. I was so confused I didn’t question her, so here.” He lifted a small bag from the stool next to him and tossed it in my direction. “You’re the proud owner of eight packets of Twizzlers.”

“Oooh, Twizzlers!” I dropped the knife and dove into the bag, pulling out all the long, red packets. “This is like heaven!”

“Dude.” Luke leaned forward and held his hands out. “My sandwich?”

“Geez, who’s on their period? You or me?” I put the candy down and went back to making his sandwich. “You should have saved the Twizzlers until after you got your food.”

“Rookie mistake.” He shook his head. “Please don’t ever ask me to buy you tampons again. I’m not sure my ego or reputation can take it.”

“Your reputation got shot to shit on your twenty-first when you mooned the mayor in the town square,” I reminded him.

“And I haven’t mooned anyone since,” he replied. “My pants now stay firmly on when I drink.”

Book Blurb:

Love is weakness.

Which is why Annabelle Mills vowed a long time ago to never let it destruct her. A former pageant queen with a bite equally as lethal as her bark, she’s interning at her dream job on the set of the highest-rated home design show on television. Everything in Annabelle’s life, though it may be cold and isolated, is going exactly as she always planned.

Until her ex-high school sweetheart moves to town. The same boy that she cheated on, once upon a time, essentially breaking both of their hearts. But no one knows the full story, and being vulnerable enough to open up about it is not on Annabelle’s checklist.

Hate is fuel.

The kind that courses through Boone Graham’s veins and allows him to shut out everyone around him. As the hottest rookie on Austin’s professional baseball team, he should be spending his days hitting homeruns and signing jerseys. Except he’s seen dreams ripped right out from under those closest to him, leaving them with nothing.

Without a college degree, he’ll never take the risk of pursuing his real dream. But when he runs into the girl who took a mallet to his heart and stopped it beating, attending the same university might just be the biggest challenge he’s faced yet.

As the semester unfolds, the line between love and hate is blurred. And with the amount of baggage stacked between them, together is the last thing they want to be.

That’s the thing about hearts, though. They develop plans all on their own.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

You’re The One I Don’t Want is a standalone, but it’s closely tied to The Tenth Girl. Much of Anna and Boone’s backstory stems from events that happened in TTG, so it’s a good point of reference. Plus, TTG was a fantastic YA romance, and I loved catching up with Cain and Harper now that they are all in college, so it’s definitely worth a read!

So on to You’re The One I Don’t Want: Ice queen Anna has some major demons. Everything she does is to seek out the approval of the mother who abandoned her. Her attitude, her icy demeanor, and keeping everyone at arm’s length is all because she’s protecting the 10-year-old inside of her who still wants her mother’s approval. All of Anna’s issues are what led her to cheat on Boone back in high school with Cain…. And now, years later, they cross paths for the first time when he transfers to her college while on the way to playing pro baseball.

Boone is a big ‘ol teddy bear. I loved his gruff demeanor, and how he softened up thanks to Cain, of all people, when it comes to Anna. Boone has family issues of his own, and Cain really helps him see that he and Anna aren’t that different. And once he allows himself to let her back into his life, they complement each other so perfectly.

This story is a little more mature than TTG because it takes place a few years later, in college versus HS. Anna and Boone are both struggling with juggling careers and college courses, while working in time to deal through their relationship issues and move past the hurt they’ve both been hanging on to since their HS break-up. It all comes together with a HEA that left a smile on my face.

EXCERPT:

Boone

I only have an hour in between my workout and the film session that the hitting coaches want us to attend.

My entire schedule since moving to Austin has been busy as hell and completely out of whack. Between getting my class schedule figured out, sprinting across campus to get to the buildings, dealing with my moving company, figuring out where to park my car in front of my building, practicing with the Triple-A affiliate team I was drafted to and everything in between … I’m fucking wiped.

I’ve been scouted for the major leagues since my sophomore year of high school, so I thought I’d been semi-prepared for what was to come, but my mind feels like it has been put in a blender for the last two weeks. I had so not been prepared. It was as if I was hobbling around in the dark in my new reality, trying to grasp at things before they moved on me.

I needed to get it the fuck together. I am a professional now and having a career as a professional baseball player would only get harder from here.

From the few times I’d visited Austin for tournaments or the odd family trip, I remember we’d gone to Big Cheese’s Grill. They boasted the best burgers in town, and it was close enough to campus that the place was always packed with students and professors alike.

I open the door to the restaurant while glancing at my iWatch to check the calories versus fat burned during my workout.

And I slam right into a body.

I bounce back, shocked at the person who just rammed into me. I fumble to hold on to them, to keep our gravity from sending both of us flying. I fail, and the body falls backward, the door slamming into my back. I absorb that blow and keep upright, thank God, or I would have been sprawled flat on top of whoever just plowed into me.

“Seriously?! Watch where you’re going!” An angry, high-pitched tone fills my ears.

My head is down, trying to collect its scrambled thoughts, as I reach for whoever I just knocked to the ground. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize you were coming out—”

The air and words leave me as I pull her up. Her hand is still in mine as we stand face-to-face, my surprise mirrored back at me. Those lips, the lashes, the eyes a rich, deep, soul-searching brown. The freckles across the bridge of her nose that make her look more innocent than she actually is.

A current of tension radiates back and forth between our interlocked hands, and I can smell the glass of wine she must have just drunk on her breath. It’s sweet with a bite of alcohol, and my mouth waters for a drink. I haven’t thirsted for alcohol in five years, yet in one chance meeting, Annabelle has me reaching for a bottle. She’s poison to me, makes me want to do crazy things. I drop her hand as the thought crosses my mind, as if she’s burned me.

“You should really watch where you’re going. Or did you knock me down on purpose?” Annabelle sniffs.

I scoff, “Right, I often go around pushing women to the ground on purpose. I see the cold hard ice hasn’t melted off your personality, Annabelle.”

And a woman she is. So much more grown up than I remembered her. She’d always been beautiful but gone was the gangliness of teenage years. This is a woman who stands in front of me, curves abound and an unseen knowledge of the world to match. I couldn’t help but get that jab in there.

“And I see you’re just as focused on yourself as ever. You never did care what anyone else was doing, did you, Boone?” She folds her arms over her chest and my eyes stray to her boobs in a sizzle of heat between us.

We’re like a bunch of children fighting like cats and dogs out in the street. How can she still pull out every insecure and immature trait within me? My brain is moving seconds slower than it usually does, and I know I’m standing here staring too long. Even though I hate Annabelle Mills, I can’t help but memorize every detail about her for the first time I’ve seen her in about five years.

“Move.” Annabelle pushes past me, not using any manners, and starts to stalk down the sidewalk.

Talk about rude. She’d always been aggressive, harsh, and just a little bit more high-maintenance than any of the other girls. It’s what had drawn me to her. And then seeing those glimpses of vulnerability, that’s what had made me stay. It was addicting feeling like you were the only one who got to see the nice side of the mean girl.

I should walk into the restaurant. I should pick up my to-go order and drive back to my apartment where I’ll eat a quick lunch and change and go to the practice facility.

But a flash of Annabelle in the bar the other night dances through my head. And her callous words just now piss me off even more.

She always did have the perfect way of getting under my skin and driving me wild. When I’m around her, I forget who I am. I turn into some raging bull, with a fuse shorter than the bombs Itchy and Scratchy use on each other.

The stupidest thing I could do right now? Stomp after her, yelling, in the middle of a crowded downtown street.

So that’s exactly what I do.

“You really haven’t changed a bit!” Oh, fuck. What am I doing?

Annabelle rolls around, her eyes sparking with rage. “Nope, still the same cold, heartless bitch you dumped.”

“Yeah, like I said, I can see that.” Lord, my mama would be so disappointed in me agreeing with a woman that she was a bitch.

“Well, no one said you had to be around it. You’re the one who moved to my city. You’re welcome to leave.” She waves around like I should just get out of here.

I fist my hands in my hair. Christ, she’s so aggravating. “No can do, I’m getting paid to be here.”

She rolls her eyes. “Like I’m not? Have you watched TV lately? Or did you take one too many fly balls to the head? I know there weren’t a lot of brain cells in there to start.”

Fuck her. Now it’s time to really piss her off, get under her skin like she’s under mine. “Oh, you mean that show you play house on or whatever? They’ll get bored of you when the next eye-candy pageant queen comes along.”

I swear Annabelle could spit nails at me if she willed it right now. “You’re an asshole, Boone Graham. You’ve only ever cared about yourself and where you want to be. It was silly of me to think you’d ever think of someone but yourself.”

I drop the anvil. “Says the girl who cheated on me. Who lost her virginity to another guy.”

People around us are starting to stare, to really look at the two people arguing openly on the street. It’s not a good idea for me to stick around any longer; people know who I am on a national level and being seen fighting with a girl, who someone will inevitably social media stalk and find out is my ex, is not good publicity.

Except I can’t stop staring into Annabelle’s eyes. They are furious, yes, but there is something more there. I’ve really … hurt her. I’m shocked, to be honest. I didn’t think I could remotely hurt this girl, who self-identifies as a cold, heartless bitch.

But there it is. The raw flash, miss-it-if-you-blink second of real pain that flickers through those mocha pools. I open my mouth to say something, to take it back, maybe apologize, but she speaks first.

“You have no idea.”

Her tone pulls at my heartstrings, it’s low and somber. And then she melts into the crowd, giving no explanation of what I have no idea about.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Let There Be Light was one of the most beautiful, sweetest romances I’ve read in I can’t remember how long! The slow burn between Royal and Camden was magnificent. I really understood every emotion Royal was going through in realizing that he had feelings for Camden, and the difficulties that Camden has experienced because of his parents, and how that’s led to his incredible insecurites, just jumped off the page. I got everything about these two!

The moments between Camden and Royal are so sweet and tender. Their relationship truly begins as a friendship neither of them expected, and turns into something more. A.M. Johnson did a fantastic job, all around!

Apparently, Royal and his twin, Indigo, are the children of Paige and Declan fromPossession. I’ve never read AM’s Avenues Ink series, so this felt like a true standalone for me. But there are appearances by Royal’s parents and uncles in this story, so I could see where that would be something fun for fans of that series to catch up with the characters! I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Indie and Kai in the second part of this duet! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
