“I’ll do it,” Tate says, shrugging off his suit coat and draping it over the back of the plastic chair still between us. Next, he loosens his tie, tugging it free from his collar like a magician waving a wand, casting a spell on me.
“Uhm.” I swallow thickly as he pops the first two buttons of his dress shirt before reaching for one cuff, unhooking a cuff link. An honest-to-the-autumn-goddess cuff link.
“Uh.” I clear my throat, appreciating this striptease a little more than I should. My cheeks heat. A lower part of me reacts when it has no business reacting.
“Just because you once dressed like a racecar driver, Driver, does not make you a mechanic.”
I squeak when he yanks his dress shirt free from his pants. The crisp material rustles like rolling on fresh bedsheets.
Do not think about him and a bed, Neve Snowe.
“I think I can handle an oil change.” He reaches for the back of his collar.
Don’t do it. My head slowly shakes side to side, a warning he’s not heeding.
He tugs the shirt up over his head.
Oh no you didn’t. A shiver ripples through me.
He draws the shirt in front of him and pops his arms free.
Plus ten.
My sister and I started rating men a few years ago. Pluses go for things like backward baseball caps and low-slung jeans. And pulling off a shirt over the head by the back collar.
Negatives are khakis and three-quarter zips. At least for me.
And in front of me stands a dichotomy. A truly mismatched puzzle of white tee and dress pants, reminding me of the intriguing man wearing a rather authentic racing getup last winter.
A man I was unexplainably drawn to during that New Year’s Eve party.

Fall Love is the perfect kind of cozy, heartwarming, fall-themed romance.
It starts out when Neve and Tate have a one-night stand on New Year’s Eve. Because they hadn’t exchanged much info, Neve had no idea how to contact Tate when she realized she was pregnant. But fate intervened, because just about nine months later, he arrived in her small town to sell her late father’s auto shop.
Immediately, Neve and Tate are at odds because she has such an emotional connection to the shop, but it’s been bleeding money and her family needs to unload it. When Tate — who is the golden retriever type who always wanted to be a husband and father — realized that not only was Neve in Lovewell but she was also pregnant, he was all in on trying to win her over. Unfortunately, Tate really had his work cut out for him because a relationship was the last thing Neve wanted.
This story was so cute and fun, everything I want in a small-town romcom, but also hit all the right emotional spots. Neve and Tate are more mature characters (late 30s/early 40s), and I found it refreshing how they communicated and interacted with one another. Erin Mallon and Ryan West did a great job in bringing these characters and their story to life!
