Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

When life hands Grace and Finn lemons in Chaser, they make the sweetest lemonade! Chaser is #4 in the Twisted Fox series, and while this group of friends overlap in the interconnected series, each book is a standalone.

There have been little breadcrumbs dropped about these two in the previous three Twisted Fox books, so I was really looking forward to their story to find out what their deal is. They are best friends. They are clearly into one another. But neither one of them has made a move. Why? And how does Grace wind up pregnant with another guy’s baby?

This best friends/fake romance is a super sweet, fake relationship, slow-burn romance. Finn and Grace are both complex characters with some heavy baggage. At first glance, it doesn’t seem like they would have hit it off, but they are truly each other’s person long before they even hook up. I really liked how Finn steps up to be Grace’s support system when her babydaddy proves to be a Grade-A jerk. And the scene where they finally admit exactly what they mean to one another was epic! I was so invested in them as a couple at that point, and the payoff with that first kiss was worth the wait.

From the previous books, we know that Grace has an issue with being alone at night, and that Finn rarely discusses his personal/family life. Both of those aspects are handled quite nicely in Chaser. I love the respect Finn got from both Grace and her parents regarding his troubled past and upbringing, and how he became a secure place for Grace to land when it came to her fears of being alone. The drama with Grace’s ex was a bit dragged out, I thought, but overall, I loved everything about Finn and Grace’s story.

Bring on Last Round! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Chasing Her Fire, by Claire Kingsley

Sexy firefighter Logan Bailey is an expert at putting the wet stuff on the hot stuffโ€”on and off duty. But he just did the unthinkable, and it wasnโ€™t trading in his tube socks. He slept with his nemesis. His mortal enemy. The crazy redhead he loves to hate. Cara Goulding. And no matter how much he wants to lie to himself, he has to admit, it was mind-blowing.

Cara will not be tempted by the one night she spent with prince dickheadโ€”even if her traitorous body remembers every earth-shattering moment. It was a mistake and sheโ€™s stronger than that. Sheโ€™ll just keep avoiding him and pretend it didnโ€™t happen. But the feuding small town of Tilikum might not be big enough for the both of them. Avoiding each other isnโ€™t working. And with every moment theyโ€™re forced to spend together, the sparks get hotter, the flames grow brighter, and the tension borders on unbearable.

Until they both reach their breaking point and their fiery relationship explodes.

Authorโ€™s note: a sexy firefighter and the sassy redhead who drives him crazy. All the banter, delicious tension, a heartwarming family, and Kindle-melting steam. Enemies to lovers is as hot as it gets and these two are FIRE.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

โ€œSheโ€™d gone from the woman I love to hate to the most important person on the planet.โ€

I finished Chasing Her Fire two days ago, and am still wrapping my head around how much I loved Logan and Caraโ€™s story! I knew these two were going to be fire. I knew I was going to love Loganโ€™s story the most, the same way I knew that Leo Miles would be my favorite hero in that familyโ€™s series. And I knew that it *had* to be Cara who Logan fell for. But I was not prepared for the fire that is Logan and Cara together!

The epilogue/prologue chapter was just a hint of how intense these two are together. And I thought I was prepared for their accidental pregnancy story, but I really wasnโ€™t! This book has All. The. Feels. The snark and name-calling that has gone on for years between these two is twisted foreplay…. and when they finally have sober sex (after that night if drunken sex!) it is off the walls hot!

Cara is batsh$t crazy, and Logan soothes all her rough edges. He grounds her in a beautiful way, and gives that scared girl who never felt safe or loved a strong and secure place to land. It takes Cara a REALLY long time to accept that Logan isnโ€™t going to walk away, and that scene where they finally profess their love is everything!!

As always, Claire Kingsley brings the heat and the heart. There are so many tender moments between Logan and Cara โ€” and I had tears in my eyes when Cara had her conversation with Gram and got her fated-mate nickname!! So beautiful!!

This book is a standalone, but there is an ongoing thread of a mystery in town that is weaved throughout the books. So really, start at the beginning of the Bailey books and read through! We get a few more details about Eliza Bailey (but not much!), and the Haven/Bailey feud is at an all-time high, just in time for Leviโ€™s story!

Logan was the Bailey brother whose story I was most looking forward to, and I was not disappointed! But after reading Leviโ€™s epilogue, I feel like the story with him is going to be crazy good!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Dirt Queen, by Nora Blake

Dirt Queen by Nora Blake is now live!

I love you. Always.

Sarah–We hadn’t spoken in years, and more often than not, he was on my mind. When I moved back to town he reached out. I stalked him enough times on Facebook to know he had a wife and two kids. I didn’t want to get my hopes up, but the pull I felt inside couldn’t be ignored.ย

Aaron–She was back. I thought I’d never see her again, but there she was. Within my reach. She agreed to meet up at the dirt track when I sent her a message. What would she think of me being a dad? Did she even know?

The unspoken feelings she tried to leave in the past forced her toย  keep him at arm’s length.ย  He was in the middle of a divorce and had two boys they both needed to consider. He was all in but she was questioning everything.

But sometimes…you have to follow your heart and let yourself fall–no matter how things might end. It’d be worth it. Always.

This book is based on a true story.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Dirt Queen is the debut novel by Nora Blake and I was blown away. Make sure you have tissues ready, because this is not your typical second-chance romance! I was not expecting Aaron and Sarah’s story to end the way that it did, and discovering in the dedication at the end of the book that it is based on a true story broke my heart all over again!

It’s been 11 years since best friends Sarah and Aaron lost touch. She moved away when they were teenagers, and while they were both in love with the other, neither one of them ever confessed how they felt. As time went on and they drifted apart, Aaron got married and had two kids, but Sarah was always the one his heart beats for. Now, she’s moved back to their small town and they reconnect on Facebook and strike up their friendship again.

It’s not long before they finally FINALLY confess that they loved each other long ago and still feel the same way, and Aaron and Sarah fall into an easy routine of going from reconnecting after years apart to being best friends again, to being a real couple. They pick up where they left off, and then some, both of them wishing that they hadn’t wasted so much time being apart.

And that’s the kicker, because this book takes a turn that I wasn’t expecting and it makes you realize that you need to seize the day, not hold back, and appreciate what you have. I was sobbing by the time I got to the last 80% or so of this book. Big, fat, ugly tears. This story didn’t end the way I thought it would based on the blurb and the fact that it was a second-chance romance. But it was raw and gritty and someone’s actual love tale, and that made it feel all too real. True love is always worth the risk!

Take a chance on this new author. You won’t be disappointed!

I finish my beer and add it to the growing empty pile beside the cooler. Fluffing my hair, I shake out my arms and smile at my roommate. โ€œIโ€™m going to dance. Alone.โ€
His eyes follow me as I walk over to the actual fire where some people sit on the ground but quite a few are dancing. Sail by AWOLNATION plays, the beat vibrating along with the pulse of my blood flowing through my veins.
I danced from the time I was four through high school. Even though I love math and the sciences, and consider myself on the more studious side, dance has been my creative outlet, a passion. I know Iโ€™m good at it, and as I move my body, eyes closed, I know people are watching. When I dance I donโ€™t care why theyโ€™re looking at me or what theyโ€™re thinking. I do it for me. Because it feels good to move my body, to exist in a moment. Dance is freeing, itโ€™s the language of our bodies.
When I finally open my eyes, they connect immediately with caramel brown ones. Heโ€™s moved closer to the bonfire, beer bottle in hand while his jaw works angrily at the piece of gum heโ€™s chewing.
I know I shouldnโ€™t do it.
Iโ€™ve sworn off men.
Heโ€™s my roommate.
Heโ€™s hot as hell.
But I do it anyway.
I crook my finger. Itโ€™s a challenge, a silent dare. The ballโ€™s in his court.
He shoves the bottle into the hand of one of his friends, slinking toward me like a panther. When he gets to me he wraps one big hand around my waist, the heat of his palm a brand against my skin. He begins to move to the song as well, and despite our massive height difference it worksโ€”we work, but I donโ€™t let my brain linger on that thought too long.
I donโ€™t know if he has any formal dance training, but he moves like someone who has at least some knowledge or basic understanding of rhythm. The fire crackles nearby, and I faintly taste ash on my tongue. His brows are drawn low as he watches me, our movements evenly matched as we anticipate each otherโ€™s movements. People still watch, but this time theyโ€™re not just watching me. Itโ€™s us. Normally I would be scared to put on a show like this, Iโ€™m not this bold, but after everything with Todd some spontaneity wonโ€™t kill me. In fact, I think itโ€™ll be good for me. It also helps that on this campus no one knows who I am. I like the anonymity of it. I can be anyone.
He knows you, my conscience whispers to me.
But not really, sure he knows who I am, but Cole doesnโ€™t know much of my past, of my hurts, the scars I bear. And tonight, I just want to be, to exist in this moment.
With both hands on my waist, he dips me backwards and my hair falls with me, the ends touching the grass. When he pulls me back up, weโ€™re closer than before. Chest to chest. Heartbeat to heartbeatโ€”well, maybe not quite since heโ€™s such a giant. I crane my neck back as we sway, our hips moving in a sensual rhythm, and our eyes meet.
Lust.
Desire.
Sex.
Itโ€™s there. In his gaze. Mine too. We canโ€™t go there, not just because weโ€™re living together, but because I need time. To heal. To stand on my own two feet. To grow.
I pull out of his arms. โ€œNo. I canโ€™t. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€ I bite my lip, truly remorseful. โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ I repeat, taking a step back.
Another.
One more.
Until Iโ€™m disappearing into the shadows.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Nice Guys Donโ€™t Win is a sweet, slow-burn college romance. I did not read the previous book in this series, but apparently, our hero, Cole, was the odd man out in that book and has now sworn off dating so he can focus on his senior year of college and playing basketball.

When his roommate leaves him in a lurch, Cole is stuck needing a second person to split rent with. Zoey has just transferred to Aldridge, and got screwed out of a dorm. But she was in the right place at the right time and ends up splitting fan apartment with Cole. Thereโ€™s a nice friendship between them that develops and leads to a mutual attraction. As things start to turn romantic, Cole and Zoey make the connection that her dad is his basketball coach.

I didnโ€™t think this story was all that forbidden, it was more of Cole wanting to stay focused to make something of his life. And after discovering that her fiancรฉ cheated on her with her best friend, Zoey has sworn off men. But these two really click, and their relationship is a nice simmer.

I came to Las Vegas for a quick girlโ€™s trip, but somehow ended up a married woman. What I thought would stay in Vegas followed me back to my small town of Sunrise Bay, Alaska.
ย
Of course, my new husbandโ€”MMA champion fighter, Logan Stoneโ€”couldnโ€™t find me alone at my house to tell me he wants to give our impromptu nuptials a shot. He has to tell me in front of my entire family and half the town.
The two of us couldnโ€™t be more opposite, but he offers me a deal I canโ€™t refuse which involves me pretending weโ€™re happily married for three months. Yeah, a lot of things can change in that short amount of time, most importantly catching feelings for a man whose lifestyle I despise.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Another great book from Piper Rayne in the Greene family series!!

Nikki Greene marries MMA superstar Logan Stone during a drunken night in Vegas… and what happened in Vegas followed her home to Alaska because Logan wanted to stay married. He felt in his gut that there was a reason they were drawn together. Nikki doesnโ€™t believe in marriage after seeing her parents get divorced, and canโ€™t help but point out how vastly different her world in Alaska is from Loganโ€™s life. But when he makes a deal to give it three months while he trains for his next fight, Nikki agrees despite herself. And along the way, finds herself dating and falling in love with her pretend husband.

Nikki and Logan had great chemistry, and I loved getting to know this family better. Another hysterical scene happens at Ethel and Doriโ€™s retirement home, too! Nikki and Logan balance each other out nicely, and he really goes the distance to prove to her that he is nothing like the preconceptions she had about him.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Wedding Dilemma, by Mariah Ankenman

The Wedding Dilemma by Mariah Ankenman is now live!ย

My life has always been pretty predictable. Run into burning buildings, save those in distress, be a hero. Shoot the shit with my fireman buddies, come home, and do it all again tomorrow. Little did I know that a random SOS call from a woman stuck in a plaster cast with nothing underneath (I swear I only caught a flash of skin) would throw me for a complete loop.

Until I see the flighty artist again. At my mom’s engagement party. To her dad.

Suddenly the unpredictable woman I couldn’t stop thinking about is my soon-to-be-stepsister. Yeah, the same one I mortified when I accidentally saw her a tiny bit naked. This should make family gatherings way more interesting.

Except when your mom’s as loaded as mine is, you can never fully let your guard down when a guy comes sniffing around. So I can’t help but be suspicious, even though his daughter’s the perfect blend of beautiful and wild. As we spend more time together, prepping for our parents’ wedding, we both agree that maybe there’s nothing wrong with having a little bit of fun in the meantime. But if she knew I was investigating her dad on the side, she would never forgive me…

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

An awkward meet-cute between hunky firefighter Parker and free-spirited artist Tamsen leads to a charming romance in The Wedding Dilemma — unbeknownst to either of them, her dad is engaged to his mom. There was an instant spark between Parker and Tamsen, and that only grows as they spend more time together.

I hesitate to say that this is a “forbidden” romance because both Tamsen and Parker are grown adults living lives of their own — it’s not like they are teenagers. But there is an undercurrent of “forbidden” in the sense that Parker is investigating Tamsen’s dad and keeping that a secret. His mom is rather wealthy and hasn’t always made the best choices in her love life. So while Parker is trying to protect his mom, his investigation has the potential to blow up his and Tamsen’s relationship when she discovers what he’s been doing behind her back.

This story is charming and sweet, with a few laugh-out-loud moments and adorable characters. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Complete Stars Duet, by Amie Knight

The Stars Duet Boxed Set, including the complete The Stars Series including the bonus story Christmas Beneath the Stars from Amie Knight, is available now!

Beneath His Stars
I met Adam Nova under the twinkling lights of a nighttime sky.
He was hiding, but that gorgeous boy didnโ€™t belong in the dark.
Nevertheless it was where he lived; a different world than mine.
I was Livingston Montgomery, Southern debutante.
With the world at my fingertips, I was well on my way to being another spoiled socialite.
But I didnโ€™t want money.
I didnโ€™t want social status.
I wanted him; tattoos, sarcastic smirk, bad boy reputation and all.
It didnโ€™t matter that he was from the wrong side of the tracks.
It didnโ€™t matter that my family forbade me from seeing him.
I just wanted to be Beneath His Stars.

In Her Space
I was reunited with Livingston Montgomery in the broad sunshine of a Carolina morning, right where she belonged; in the light.
Itโ€™d been too long since Iโ€™d seen her face.
She had changed, but so had I.
I was Adam Nova, reformed bad boy. Now, successful business man.
I had it all, except for the one person Iโ€™d always wanted, and now I was back to claim her.
She was living in the shadows, just a shell of the former girl I knew.
But it didnโ€™t matter that she tried to hide from me in the dark.
Iโ€™d follow her into the deepest depths of hell.
I just wanted to be In Her Space.

Excerpt from Beneath His Stars

โ€œAre you smoking?โ€ Her lip curled in disgust.

            I nodded.

It was her turn to look disgusted this time. โ€œDo you even speak?โ€

I nodded again and she shook her head in disbelief before reaching over the space between us and snatching the cigarette out of my mouth so fast I didnโ€™t see it coming. I stood there dumbfounded. People didnโ€™t snatch shit away from me. People were scared of me. Not this brave girl. I should have known.

โ€œSmoking is disgusting.โ€ She said it quietly like it didnโ€™t matter, but I could tell it did to her. She bent over and put the butt out on the driveway before standing up again and shoving it in her pocket.

I smirked. โ€œYou gonna keep that?โ€

Her eyes ignited with anger. โ€œNo, Iโ€™m going to throw it in the trash because Iโ€™m not a litterbug.โ€

Shaking my head, I muttered under my breath, โ€œFucking litterbug.โ€ She was being cute. The girl with the too long legs and too big mouth that I couldnโ€™t get out of my mind was fucking cute, too. I was screwed.

I wanted to full-on smile at her cuteness, but I held my happiness close to my chest. God knew it always came with a price. And I was done paying.

โ€œYou kiss your momma with that smoke mouth?โ€ she asked snarkily, clearly pissed off about my smirk.

I lowered my head and took a step back, running a hand through my dark hair. I wanted to tell this girl things. Things I had no business telling her, like that I didnโ€™t kiss my momma with anything anymore. Instead, I asked the question that had been plaguing me since sheโ€™d seemed surprised it was me who had left the notes.

โ€œWho did you think it was?โ€

Her face screwed up in confusion. โ€œWhat?โ€

I stood straighter and licked my lips before answering. โ€œWho did you think left the notes?โ€

I was feeling strangely vulnerable in that moment waiting for her answer and I didnโ€™t like it one bit. Why did it matter to me who wrote her or didnโ€™t? Or who else thought she was the most intriguing thing ever? For fuckโ€™s sake, she was just another rich bitch from the island. Why did anything about what she was about to say matter to me at all?

She bit her lip again and I still wanted to reach over and pull it from her teeth. It was sexy that lip bite, innocent even, and for some reason that made it all the more attractive.

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ Her brow furrowed in thought and she looked away, almost like she didnโ€™t want to tell me the answer to my question. But then her eyes landed on mine again. โ€œI thought it was the other guyโ€”โ€

            โ€œBoone?โ€ I interrupted loudly.

A disgusted look crossed her face. โ€œGod, no. Not him. The blond. The other guy.โ€

I let out a long breath accompanied by a sarcastic chuckle. โ€œGrady?โ€ That guy didnโ€™t even graduate high school and she thought he knew anything about astronomy. I would have laughed if the whole thing hadnโ€™t annoyed me so much.

Her eyes brightened. โ€œIs that his name?โ€

I pulled out my pack of cigarettes again. โ€œYou like him or something?โ€

            โ€œWhat? No!โ€

I walked out into the street and lit my smoke far away from her.

She started to follow me. โ€œWhere are you going?โ€

            โ€œHome.โ€

โ€œBut I donโ€™t even know your name!โ€ she yelled and stomped a foot.

I almost smiled again.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I read this duet when it first came out in 2018. I couldn’t wait to get the box set and read Adam and Liv’s bonus epilogue! Amie Knight has put together a masterpiece in this broken souls, immense longing, perfectly paired, opposites-attract YA romance! I was captivated by Adam and Livโ€™s story from the first page to the last.

This story is a marvelous example of how looks can be deceiving. Adam is hiding a sweet and tender soul under his tattoo armor, and Livโ€™s life looks picture-perfect but is anything but. Yet together, these characters are an amazing couple, with a love story for the ages.

Beneath His Stars ends with a shocking, abrupt scene, and In Her Space is the stunning conclusion to Adam and Liv’s story — set 10 years later. Liv and Adam were torn apart, and the time has changed both of them… and not necessarily for the better.

After serving time in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, Adam is now a successful businessman back with a revenge plan… as well as one to get Liv back. Even though they are still desperately in love with one another, the secrets of his past and truths he’s not willing to completely share threaten to tear them apart.

The Stars duet is an epic story of the boy from the wrong side of the tracks and the girl who stole his heart. Life has been cruel to them both, and they need to learn how to trust in one another again in order to get to the HEA that they both dreamed about under the stars.

I was pleasantly surprised at how Sebastian, Braden and Mel come back into the story all these years later, and the relationships that Liv develops with them. And… The Line was the first book of Amie’s that I’d read, so I was thrilled when Liv went to visit Everly and Cole at the peach farm! What a treat!

The Complete Duet offers a bonus novella — Christmas Beneath The Stars. It’s a Christmas Eve story, a few chapters long, and a lovely look at Adam and Liv’s life as a married couple. They have some struggles, like all married couples do, but they both set out this Christmas Eve to make it magical for the other. And it is a marvelous, bonus happily ever after for this endearing couple, who had gone through so much to make their life together under the stars.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: All The Beautiful Things, by Stacey Lynn

โ€œAn emotional and thought-provoking romance fueled by a page-turning suspense.โ€ – Jewel E. Ann, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author

All the Beautiful Things, the highly anticipated conclusion to the unforgettable Love & Lies Duet by Stacey Lynn is available now!

Sheโ€™d been betrayed too many times to hand over her trust.
Iโ€™d lost too many people to love too easily.

Together, we were a mess. A constant struggle for peace. Yet it was in each other we found everything we were looking for.
Until tragedy struck and I feared the worst.
Pushing her away would have been the best. Kept us safe and unshaken.

But it was too late. My little fighter had determined what she wanted, and she was willing to go down swinging to finally earn her happily ever after.

It was her determination that kept us together, even through the worst of it.
If we finally made it to the other side, all the ugly things weโ€™d survived could lead to something beautiful.

Excerpt from All the Ugly Things:

She worked in a shithole diner and probably lived in a shithole place when she was the daughter of a state judge, probably grew up in private schools with a Mercedes gifted to her on her sixteenth birthday and more money than my own parents had. This shouldnโ€™t be her life.
Sheโ€™s better than this. Better than her circumstance and I believe her. She just needs someone to help.
The memory of Melissaโ€™s pleading eyes made me squeeze my own eyes shut. โ€œFucking bleeding heart.โ€
Since she could walk, she had a calling to save everything from kittens and frogs and turtles in the road to classmates and children where she worked.
One last request. Promise me.
Iโ€™d wanted to throttle her slim, pale throat.
I gripped the door handle and scowled at the silver-plated handle, before I threw it open.
โ€œHappy now?โ€ I asked, and somehow, I knew she was.
Lilly was still in the back when I entered. Where Dad said she always stood, there was an old laptop with notebooks spread open. I took the seat at the far end and waited, snagging a menu from the counter on my way.
The food was cheap, basic diner food, perfect for the clientele a place like this brought in. Greasy, thick burgers, patty melts, and Reubens. Sandwiches and burgers and two salad options.
It was late enough none of it appealed to me. Probably why my dad came for the pies.
Fortunately for me, heโ€™d said they were the best heโ€™d ever tasted, and Iโ€™d inherited his sweet tooth.
The creak of old, squeaky door hinges rang out and I lifted my head.
Lilly came out carrying a tray stacked with food, focused on the four-top. I didnโ€™t move for fear of distracting her. Not a great first impression to make if she ended up covered in grease and condiments.
The guys at the table did more shoulder-slapping, whooping and hollering like they were watching the Super Bowl and not their food being delivered. I kept my eyes on them, waiting for one to give me a reason to put an end to all of them. The dark-haired guy would be first. He sat at the outer edge of the booth and as Lilly leaned forward to deliver a tray to the guy next to him, his hand hovered inches from her backside.
The blond across the table egged him on with a nod but she stood back, put space between them, and barked, โ€œEven think of touching me and none of you are leaving with your dicks still attached to your body.โ€
โ€œOohh. Iโ€™ll show you mine happily,โ€ one said, hands dropping to his lap.
She glared at him, resting bitch face I was certain she learned in prison firmly in place. It didnโ€™t look right on her. Too hard. Too forced.
What would she have been like as a smiling, happy teenager before life was stolen from her?
Damn it. I felt it then. That pull my dad had when he first saw her.
Sheโ€™d lost too much.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I am so glad that there wasnโ€™t a long wait for the conclusion to this duet! The first book ended in one helluva cliffhanger, and the conclusion to Lilly and Hudsonโ€™s story was epic!

This picks up in the same scene where the first story ends โ€” Lilly has found out just how deep Hudsonโ€™s familyโ€™s secrets run when it comes to their interest in her. Are lies of omission okay when you are trying to do a good deed? That is the crux of Lillyโ€™s decision in whether or not to forgive Hudson. His family holds all sheโ€™s ever wanted; all she needs to do is accept it.

But just as she does, another shock hits them, and this time Hudson is the one who balks. Will Lilly let him push her away, or will she fight for everything sheโ€™s ever wanted?

This story was brilliantly written, hits all the emotional notes I expected it to, and kept me captivated from start to finish!

Book Review

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Bombshell, by Jessica Prince

Title: Bombshell
Series: Whiskey Dolls
Author: Jessica Prince

Contemporary Romance; Small Town Romance; Single Dad Romance

Heโ€™d hated me first, so I figured it was only fair I hate the stupid, sexy jerk back.

After ending the worldโ€™s worst relationship, Marin Grey had sworn off men. So it was rather inconvenient that she couldnโ€™t seem to keep her eyes and thoughts off the Ice King himself, Pierce Waltonโ€”also known as her ex-boyfriendโ€™s older, much hotter brother.

He was cold, callous, and rude. He was also the most gorgeous man sheโ€™d ever laid eyes on, which made the fact that heโ€™d hated her from first sight all the more unfair.

When circumstances dictate they put their swords away so Marin can help Pierce take care of his son, that ice-cold hate suddenly takes a turn into something much hotter. And if they arenโ€™t careful, they could both be burned alive.

**Whiskey Dolls is a brand-new series of interconnected, standalone, small town romances.**

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Ah! Bombshell was a GREAT series starter! The Whiskey Dolls series is a spinoff of Jessica Prince’s Hope Valley series, and will focus on the dancers who work at the hip burlesque club. While this series takes place in the same small town and Marin was a side character in the HV book Playing For Keeps, Bombshell is a complete standalone. (Although, Marin’s breakup with her abusive ex, Frank, plays out in Playing For Keeps, and since that book is also amazing, you should go read it!)
So, on to Marin and Pierce! He is a moody, broody, single dad… except that he’s not really that moody and doesn’t hate her the way Marin thinks he is. Pierce only hates what Marin makes him feel — because no woman has made him feel anything since his wife died. And the fact that she was dating his no-good brother when they first met sealed the deal for Pierce that Marin was a woman he needed to stay away from. But when they keep running into one another around town, and Pierce finds himself needing a babysitter, Marin offers to fill in and watch adorable Eli. And she soon finds out that Pierce isn’t the Ice King that she thought he was.
I loved how this friendship and eventual romance played out between Marin and Pierce. Falling in love just kinda sneaks up on both of them after they agreed to a casual relationship with no expectations. My heart broke for Pierce and all he went through with his wife’s illness and death. It was so hard for him to accept that he was head over heels for Marin, until it was almost too late. And when he finally learns the truth about what went down with Marin and Frank, he really goes the distance to play knight and let Marin know that he belongs to her as much as she belongs to him.
Bombshell was a perfectly perfect small-town romance! I love how Jessica Prince keeps this small town so tightly-knit, with mentions of the other Hope Valley residents, and appearances in Bombshell by Mrs. W and Charlotte from Playing For Keeps. While I was sad to see the Hope Valley series start to wind down, because I loved those characters so much, I’m super excited to see what JP has in store for the other Whiskey Dolls! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. Thatโ€™s why God created central air, after all.

Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boyโ€“she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.

In addition to being a wife and mom, sheโ€™s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of booksโ€“romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says itโ€™s a passionโ€ฆthereโ€™s a difference. Not that sheโ€™d expect a boy to understand.

Jessica has been writing since she was a little girl, but thankfully grew out of drawing her own pictures for her stories before ever publishing her first book. Because an artist she is not.

Excerpt

I hear a familiar bark and turn back. The woman from the park rushes toward the nearest shop as if I didnโ€™t just bust her for following me. โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ I ask. โ€œAre you stalking me?โ€ I might be jumping ahead of myself, but better to settle it now. A lot of weird stuff was happening at the park. Is she to blame?

Despite Rascalโ€™s joy to see me, obstinance stiffens her shoulders, and she scoffs. โ€œYou wish.โ€ Her hand flies out. โ€œIt just so happens that Iโ€™m walking in the same direction. So what?โ€

โ€œDefensive,โ€ I reply, analyzing her body language. Crossed arms. Straight line across her lips. Half-mast eyelids as she glares at me.ย

โ€œIโ€™m not defensive. Iโ€™m offended. You just called me a stalker.โ€

โ€œMy bad.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re bad, all right.โ€ She angles her chin up, and adds, โ€œYou can go about your day now.โ€

Iโ€™m tempted to chuckle, but Iโ€™m thinking itโ€™s wise to restrain myself. โ€œI will. Good day.โ€

โ€œGood day, sir,โ€ she says to my back as I walk away.ย

I stop again, but this time, I donโ€™t look back. Forcing myself to walk forward, I continue through the upscale neighborhood to the next block. I busy my attention on the architecture until I hear Rascal bark again.ย

I knew I shouldnโ€™t have talked to a stranger. She may be hot, but she could also be deranged, using her dog as a ploy to trick her next victim to her lair. What am I even talking about?

When I turn back this time, she sidles quickly up to a coffee shop window, pretending to know the people sitting on the other side.ย

By how they turn their backs to her, they donโ€™t reciprocate. โ€œNice try,โ€ I tease.

Glancing at me, she huffs. โ€œIโ€™m walking in the same direction. Itโ€™s no big deal, for Godโ€™s sake.โ€ She punctuates the words with an epic eye roll as if Iโ€™m putting her out. Huffing, she grabs Rascal, clutching him to her side.ย

โ€œHis feet haveโ€”โ€

โ€œShit.โ€ย

โ€œExactly.โ€

Anger fills her chest, and she shakes her head, exhaling it loudly with a foot stomp. โ€œUgh! Iโ€™ll go this way.โ€

As. If. Iโ€™m the nuisance.

Me?

Why am I even sticking around to have this conversation? Why am I bothering? Going in different directionsโ€”thatโ€™s us. She crosses the street, and I turn the corner, both of us heading back to our own lives and hopefully never seeing each other again.

I continue toward the building up ahead alone.ย Iโ€™m good. Iโ€™m fine.ย Alone is how I thrive. Iโ€™ll be here a year or two. Thatโ€™s nothing. I have plenty of work to keep me busy.

Work.

Iโ€™m here for work. Thatโ€™s it. I have a plan in place, and nothing and no one will keep me from achieving my goals.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I love a grumpy-workaholic-meets-a-sunshiney-heroine love story, and The One I Want did not disappoint!! We met Andrew previously in Never Got Over You — he is Nick’s brother and business partner. And while Nick and Natalie (and the lovely, lovely mom Cookie!) appear in The One I Want, it is not necessary to have read that book in order to enjoy Andrew and Juni’s story.

Juni is a joy! She is so bright and cheerful — yet she is covering up a dark pain of abandonment issues. She and Andrew have the cutest stinking meet-cute — and I mean that literally because the dog she’s walking poos on Andrew! There is a nice friendship that builds between Andrew and Juni as they keep running into one another. The word “stalker” comes up more than once, as Juni is afraid to let him know that they are actually neighbors in the same apartment building. That lie of omission leads to the first fight between our fine couple, but there is a great kiss-and-make-up that comes out of it.

The build of Andrew and Juni’s relationship is well-paced. I really enjoyed the two sides we get of Andrew: Andrew the CEO and Drew the Ice Cream Guy. So cute! While I didn’t think that Drew and Juni packed the same gut-punch epic romance that Nick and Natalie had, I really enjoyed The One I Want.
