Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Muse by Emma Scott

From USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Emma Scott, comes an emotional paranormal romance about sacrifice, redemption, and the power of true love.

Cole Matheson didn’t expect the road toward being a successful painter would be paved in gold, but he hoped there’d be a few less potholes. Insidious self-doubt that whispers that he’s no good, talentless, hopeless has him on the brink of despair. Maybe it would be better to just give up.

A midnight visit by a beautiful creature of darkness changes everything…

Ambrosius Edward Meade-Finch surrendered to the underworld centuries ago after knowing only pain and suffering during his short life. Now, Ambri makes humans dance on his strings, feeding on their desire for his own pleasure. But his liege lord questions his loyalty and commands him to bring a pure soul into their dark realm.

Cole Matheson seemed like an easy mark, but Ambri didn’t count on his goodness or the depth of his generous spirit that wants Ambri just as he is. And Cole never expected to find in Ambri a muse who unlocks his talent and who might also be what his lonely heart has been searching for. Something fragile yet powerful grows between them, and the possibility of soul-deep love hangs in the balance, if only they have the courage to reach for it.

But fairy tale endings don’t come without a price. The dark forces Ambri answers to have been promised a soul, and they’re coming to collect…

The Muse is book 2 in the Angels and Demons series but can be read as a standalone.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Muse is the second book in the Angels & Demons series by Emma Scott and can be read as a standalone. There are many references to the first book (The Sinner) so it helps to have the context of book 1 — but Emma supplies a glossary to fill in the blanks. Even though I read The Sinner, I was happy to have the glossary on hand to refresh my memory!

Cole is the best friend of Lucy, from The Saint. Lucy got her HEA with Caz, with some help from Ambri. Now, because Casziel has left them, Ambri must bring in a new soul to the Dukes of Hell or suffer for a century. So he sets his sights on Lucy’s best friend, Cole, because taking him will hurt Lucy, and he’s actually jealous of Lucy and Caz’s relationship.

Cole and Ambri are soulmates, even though Amrbi doesn’t have a soul. They are both so tortured, yet just made perfect sense together. Cole struggles with his mental health and is battling some figurative demons when he meets Ambri, a literal demon. While it is initially Ambri’s goal to manipulate and destroy Cole, but he can’t help but fall in love with the sweet, forgiving man. And Cole falls for Amrbi as well. But as their relationship grows and deepens, it also becomes a ticking timebomb, because The Other Side wants a soul to keep.

I am not a fan of paranormal, but I am a fan of Emma Scott’s. And I devoured The Sinner, so I wanted to check out The Muse. It was just as much of an epic, sweeping romance, albeit a darker one with some of the themes of this book. Demons and ghosts and all that? Yeah, but it’s also a mesmerizing story of two tortured souls who find solace and peace in one another. And facing your fears, and forgiveness, and all those messy, wonderful emotions that I love to feel when I’m reading.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

He was my forever and always, my port in the storm, my one true love.

Everything was so perfect.

Until a cruel twist of fate derailed our future.

Now, we were navigating uncharted territory. Merely surviving without really living.

Despite the odds, I never stopped fighting for him. 𝐹𝑜𝑟 𝑢𝑠.

I had no intention of ever breaking the vows we’d made…

Then, piece by piece, he claimed my heart, too. That wasn’t enough for him though. He wanted all of me.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Well done, Emery Rose! Until August is an emotional rollercoaster of a story about two broken and beaten-down people not only finding love, but hope for better days ahead.

My heart broke for both August and Nicola. August lost everything, even though he did what he did for the betterment of his family. And Nicola…. What do you do when you are torn between two loves? Nicola is technically still married, but her husband is not really part of her life. Through her friendship with August, she blossomed and bloomed, becoming vibrant again. But Italian guilt is very real, and I got Nic’s struggle.

I didn’t quite understand Frankie’s reasons for being so angry with Nicola regarding Cruz. It wasn’t Nic’s fault, and she took the brunt of Frankie’s anger, but the reason didn’t line up.

This book is part of the Love & Chaos series and is set a few years after Wilder Love and Sweet Chaos. I loved catching up with the rest of the group, and I was so happy to see August form friendships of his own with Dylan and Shane.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Tissues are most definitely needed for this second-chance romance! Ella and Alden grow up across the street from each other and while they never technically date, they are in love from the time they are 13. She was in love with him long before he snuck in her window that first night to kiss her.

Life takes them in different directions, but they eventually find their way back to each other. Alden was a bit of the rebel after his dad left, and he vows to make something of himself before he feels worthy to be with Ella. And once he does and they finally get together, life is glorious. Until it’s not.

These characters and the backstory were so thought out. There’s a great camaraderie among the neighborhood kids, including Alden’s twin, Oliver, and Ella’s best friend, Tori. They rely on one another, lift each other up, and stick by each other’s side always.

Part one of a duet, this book ends on a shocking cliffhanger. The second half, Always Us, will be available soon thankfully bc I need to get the conclusion of Ella and Alden’s story!

~*~

How do you make yourself fall in love with someone?

After his family friend, Chloe Ryan, is traumatized by a disturbed ex-boyfriend, Luke Hamilton is “encouraged” to step up and be the kind of partner she needs.

Problem is, he’s never been in love before.

He’s not one to give up, though. His stubborn, competitive nature, mixed with the dutiful loyalty he inherited from his parents, makes it impossible for him to say no. And romancing Chloe becomes priority number one.

But his feisty contender gives him the challenge of a lifetime when she’d rather argue with him than accept a simple compliment. Chloe demands honest, genuine feelings from someone before she’ll even think about opening her heart again, and since Luke refuses to back down from his determined quest, he decides to grow some feelings.

Except, uh, yeah… That’s easier said than done since he has no idea how to even begin the process of falling.

***

Chloe is a simple woman with simple wants. All she’d like is to work her job, find a partner to share her life with, and then grow a family with him.

But apparently, that’s just too much to ask for.

After her ex kidnaps and terrorizes her, Chloe is suddenly put on six weeks of leave from her job to recover, she can’t handle it when anyone touches her, and her big dream of the simple life seems more impossible to reach than ever.

Until Luke bulldozes his way into the picture, determined to help her through her rough patch and promising her everything she’s ever wanted.

The problem is Chloe loved Luke way back when she was young, and no one’s ever broken her heart the way he did when he didn’t even notice her in return. No way is she going to risk more heartbreak at his hands now. Chloe becomes just as determined to push him away as he is to stick by her side.

Let the battle of wills begin.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

I felt a little lost while reading this book because I didn’t realize it is part of a larger series and was unsure about some of the relationships between the characters. And I also wasn’t sure how the plot point that Luke was “told” to fall in love with Chloe was going to sit with me. I didn’t love it and have read plenty of books in the fake-relationship trope that didn’t set up the romance between the main characters with an ick like that. For the same reason, I don’t like the relationship bet trope, Chloe was betrayed from the start.

That said, I did enjoy Chloe and Luke’s story very much. There are great uses of flashbacks to solidify the long-standing relationship between the two, and I thought that some heavy themes were handled well by the author, especially the trauma bonding after she’s abducted by her ex.

I guess that in the end, Luke’s directive with Chloe was the prod he needed to finally make a move, but that plot point didn’t sit well with me.

I received a complimentary copy and voluntarily left a review.

Chase and Julia were amazing together! Made For Me is the first book in Natasha Madison’s new series, which itself is a spin-off of her multiple hockey series. I loved the connection that Chase and Julia had, mainly because they were side characters in other stories and have been friends for years.

Julia is a social worker, and when she has the most difficult night ever with a client, Dr. Chase Grant is coincidentally there and becomes her rock. The events that follow with the case are horrible, but Chase never leaves her side. They have always been friends, there has always been a connection between them, but all of a sudden Chase realizes that he needs to be her support system. When did he start looking at her differently? Or was she always the one?

The switch from friends to lovers comes so seamlessly for these two. This is a lovely low-angst story with no relationship drama. There are other forces at play that make Made For Me a bit different than other NM books as far as the story’s setting goes, and it was just a wonderful friends to lovers tale.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Intern by Marni Mann

A scorching hot enemies-to-lovers office romance from USA Today best-selling author Marni Mann…

In the legal world, everyone knows my last name. So, when Declan Shaw—the hottest, most ruthless and sought-after litigator in the state—comes in to mentor my class’s mock trial, I decide not to reveal that piece of personal information.

I want a one-on-one with him like I’m any other law student, especially when we go out to celebrate after class.

But the one-on-one ends with us in the alley behind the bar.

With us stripping off our clothes.

With me screaming his name.

It’s desperate-to-have-you, no-holds-barred, downright filthy sex.

And then, he ghosts me, like a complete alphahole.

But a few weeks later, when I walk into The Dalton Group—my family’s law firm—where I’m starting my internship, my new boss is waiting for me.

The man I despise.

The man I can still taste in my fantasies.

Declan Shaw.

 Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

If steamy, enemies-to-lovers workplace romances are your jam, then don’t miss out on The Intern. Hannah and Declan have chemistry for days, from the moment they meet during a mock trial in one of her law school classes and have hot, steamy, alley-way $ex to the moment she realizes that he will be her mentor at her family’s law firm.

Declan is as shocked to see Hannah as his intern as she is to see him as his mentor. He had no idea who she was the night that they hooked up, and she was ticked after he ghosted her. It’s been a few weeks, but Declan hasn’t been able to get Hannah out of his mind — and working with her every day is going to be pure torture, so he naturally resorts to being a grouchy SOB. For her part, Hannah lies about the events that happened that night, setting the stage for a major conflict between them once things really get going. Will alphahole Declan fully let his walls down and let Hannah in? Will her omission be too much for Declan to handle or will these two litigators find a common ground?

The banter between Hannah and Declan is sharp and witty, and the storyline grabbed my attention from the start. I enjoyed the arc that each of them took in this story, and how they came to find a work/life balance.

UPDATE FOR AUDIO: Holy hell, Lee Samuels took Declan to a WHOLE new level!! His narration was phenomenal and along with Savannah Peachwood, Declan and Hannah were even hotter the second time around as I listened to these two vocal artists tell the tale.

The Intern is a standalone in the Dalton Family series and follows Hannah, the younger cousin of Dominic, Jenner, and Ford. Of course, there are plenty of appearances from her big cousins, and the timeline overlaps a bit with Ford’s story, The Single Dad. I can’t wait to see how this series finishes up with Hannah’s twin, Camden, in The Bachelor.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: You Had Your Chance, Lee Burrows

USA Today Bestselling Author, Piper Rayne, begins the Kingsmen Football Stars series with an enemies-to-lovers, second chance story set in the world of professional football.

You Had Your Chance, Lee Burrows by Piper Rayne is now live!

Lee f’ing Burrows

The Kingsmen’s star quarterback.

Legendary throwing arm.

Six-pack abs.

Kissable lips.

Oh, but don’t forget, he’s also a lying, heartless egomaniac who broke my heart in college.

It took me years to build myself back up after his deceit, and now I have the dream opportunity to prove myself working as a sports therapist for a professional team.

The hurdle? Or mountain to be more accurate…

The job is with the San Francisco Kingsmen.

Back when I was a naïve college girl, I felt lucky that he even noticed me. Now eight years later, he’d be lucky if I gave him the time of day.

Which I won’t. Not ever.

Some people don’t deserve a second chance and Lee Burrows is one of them.

Now if someone could only tell him that because he’s hell-bent on scoring the winning touchdown and won’t accept that it’s game over for us.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I have realized there’s a pattern in my last few Piper Rayne reviews: It was a great addition… it was a great close to a series… and now we have You Had Your Chance, Lee Burrows — which was a great start to a new PR series! But there’s a reason why I keep saying that in my reviews because it’s true. These two authors know how to create full, rich characters and a captivating storyline that holds the reader’s attention from start to finish.

My first tease of Lee and Shayna’s story was in Offside With #55 (Hockey Hotties) since Lee and Kane are brothers, and then I fell in love with them as a couple in the novella False Start (originally part of the Ten First Dates anthology). I definitely recommend reading that short story first, because it provides all the backstory about Lee and Shayna’s college romance, and why there is then an eight-year time jump.

Now it’s eight years later, and Shayna has gotten a job as a physical therapist working for the Kingsmen, Lee’s football team. The sizzle between them hasn’t fizzled, but Lee broke her heart and Shayna hasn’t forgotten that. Or fully gotten over it either. The road to reconciliation does not come easily for these two, but it’s a great journey as Shayna and Lee find their way back to one another. Narrators Joe Arden and Callie Dalton did a great job in bringing Lee and Shayna to life, and I have become a big fan of the duet narration!

Having read several of Piper Rayne’s series now, I love finding the Easter Eggs that connect the worlds. I knew the Kingsmen Football series was connected to the Hockey Hotties because of Lee and Kane, but I loved the surprise connection to Jasper and Lennon (Mad About The Banker from the Modern Love series) and look forward to more cameos in the next books of this series. And doing what they do best, Piper Rayne dropped lots of nuggets about the supporting characters, and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for Brady and Miles.

So I’ll say it: You Had Your Chance Lee Burrows was such a fun read and a great start to a new Piper Rayne series! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

I never thought I deserved this. A rockstar in one of the biggest bands in the world.

My life consisted of parties and women until one thing changed everything.

I was going to be a dad.

I never wanted a family. I was fine on my own.

Until I couldn’t get enough.

Until she was the one thing always on my mind.

She is changing the way I think. Giving me a new outlook on life. One I can almost taste.

But things can change in the blink of an eye.

And promises made can turn cruel.

I should have known I’d never get a happy ending.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

In all honesty, I’m not sure what to think about Cruel Promises. Mostly because I didn’t think that the title fit the story and I struggled with the pacing and some plot points.

Marley and Silas were definitely the quintessential good girl/bad boy combo — the pastor’s daughter gets knocked up by the manwhore rockstar from a one-night stand. Things do not go well when Marley shows up to tell him that she’s pregnant, but Silas eventually does right by her. And a genuine friendship forms between them that then turns romantic.

But I just never felt that *sizzle* that I wanted to between Marley and Silas. And when things between them fell apart toward the end of the story, I felt like it was a bit disjointed and then very rushed when they reunited. I just wanted more from these characters and the story, and I felt like it was a letdown.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Target by Lena Hendrix

All I wanted was a break from my small-town life. Not to be stuck driving across the country with my older brother’s gorgeous, infuriating best friend.

Charming, cocky federal agent Scott Dunn is back in my life. And I hate him.

Four years ago, Scotty was the center of every one of my fantasies. He was funny, kind, and eleven years older than me–a protector. But one ill-timed confession and he vanished from my life without so much as a goodbye.

Now I am called to testify against the men who kidnapped me and the gorgeous, infuriating man I tried so hard to forget is assigned to protect me. I want answers and he refuses to give them.

But as much as he claims to hate me too, I see the way his eyes linger on my skin. How his hands itch to reach out. He understands me in a way I’ve never let another man get close enough to know. My scars, physical and emotional, are a constant reminder of the girl I used to be.

A girl I try to forget.

As we travel across the country, the tension and simmering heat becomes unbearable. He’s pushing me outside my comfort zone while I’m desperately searching for control––until I realize Scott is more than willing to give it to me.

Once this is over, I know he’ll disappear again. But for now, he’s surrendering his control, and I’m going to take it.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I was sorry to see the Redemption Ranch series come to an end, but Lena Hendrix definitely ended it with a bang in telling Gemma and Scotty’s story! I have been waiting to read their story ever since the first book, and she did not disappoint!

Four years after ghosting Gemma, Scotty has returned to the ranch because Gemma has been called up to testify in a federal trial against the mobsters who kidnapped and tortured her. And to get to Chicago, she and Scott have to take a road trip. Lots of tension between these two — the “I hate him but I still love him kind” — made for a delicious close-proximity tale. And wow, this book was spicier than the rest of the series as the balance of power between Scotty and Gemma shifted when they were behind closed doors. I loved it!

How did I never connect that Maggie from Chickalu Falls was Scott’s sister?!? Love when authors make those connections!

Before closing out this series, Lena set her readers up for the next book series she’s writing, and I can’t wait to see Gemma’s best friend find love and Kate’s rowdy band of brothers!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Never For Him by Jessica Prince

Title: Never For Him

Series: Hope Valley
Author: Jessica Prince

Contemporary Romance; Small Town Romance

Serenity Ryan was ready for a fresh start. When the chance at a new life came knocking on her door, she was all too happy to answer. She had a new job, a new apartment, and a new outlook on life. She also had a bone deep crush on the last remaining bachelor of Alpha Omega. He was the brooding hero in every love story ever written, and she wanted nothing more than to be the heroine who healed his wounds.

Hunter McCann knew better than most what it felt like to lose what’s most important. He’d lost family to tragedy, his brothers in battle, and the heart of the only woman he’d ever loved. To protect himself from ever having to experience that kind of pain again, he erected walls around his heart. Then a fiery woman with a loud mouth and a wild spirit decided to scale those walls.

Hunter never wanted to love again, but something about Serenity Ryan has grabbed on and refuses to let go. When danger comes to Hope Valley and threatens her safety, Hunter is determined to protect the woman he’s falling for. Because this is one loss he knows he can’t come back from.

Just then, I felt it, the prickling sensation skating across my skin that could only mean one thing.

I knew what I’d find even before I cast my gaze toward the entrance, and the mere sight of him never failed to make my heart race and my palms grow clammy.

The man actually made me nervous, which was something I hadn’t thought possible given just how jaded I was. The things I’d done and seen when it came to the opposite sex had a way of stripping off the rose-colored glasses. But I could say with unwavering certainty that I’d never met a man like Hunter McCann in my life.

The first time I laid eyes on him, he’d left me breathless. Though, the same couldn’t have been said had the shoe been on the other foot. I hadn’t exactly been at my best at the time, what with having been kidnapped by a complete moron and all, but when Hunter busted into the warehouse where my sister and I were being held by what had to be the stupidest criminal on the face of the earth, an instant crush had formed.

Sure, he hadn’t been the only one who came riding in to rescue us, in fact, he had the whole band of Alpha Omega badasses with him, and believe me when I say there was more eye candy to behold with that crew than one woman could handle. However, I’d only had eyes for him.

It wasn’t just his looks, although, there was plenty of fine to go around. Everything from his sharp, masculine features to his rock-hard, muscle-bound physique looked like they’d been carved out of granite. If I’d had to guess, he cleared six feet by a good few inches, making me, a woman who stood at 5’7 and had a penchant for sassy stilettos, feel positively tiny in his presence. Just from looking at him, I knew he’d have been more than capable of tossing me over his broad shoulders and carrying me off to his lair, and man did I wish he would.

But in spite of how gorgeous he was, what really drew me to him were his eyes. The most beautiful eyes I’d ever seen. A blue so crisp they reminded me of melting glaciers. Those liquid pools carried such intense shadows, a shiver ran along my spine the first time his gaze connected with mine. I hadn’t known it was possible for eyes as icy blue as his to hold storm clouds, but he proved me wrong.

He carried some kind of pain with him like a broody cloak he never took off. As demented as it might have sounded, something about those shadows called to me like my own personal siren song. I knew all about pains of the heart, and I wanted nothing more than to see if I could squeeze a little light out between the darkness lurking in his gaze.

There was just one teensy problem.

I wasn’t anything more to him that the sister of his buddy’s new fiancée.

Talk about a hit to a woman’s pride. But even still, I couldn’t seem to turn the attraction off.

“Hey. Earth to Serenity.” Stella snapped in front of my face, giving me a jolt.

I shook my head to clear it of the cobwebs that Hunter always seemed to cause. “Sorry. Did you say something?”

Her forehead pinched in a frown as she studied me. “You totally spaced there for a second. What were you staring at?”

“Nothing,” I answered quickly, but she was already leaning in front of me, following my earlier line of sight until her gaze landed directly on the very figment of every fantasy I’d had for weeks.

“Oh, Serenity,” she said in a way that had my spine going ramrod straight. Her tone held a warning while her features dipped with pity.

“What?” I asked with a defensive snap to my tone. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

She twisted and stepped in front of me, placing her back to the room. “Look, sis, I want you to be happy. There’s nothing I want more in this world than you to find a man to treat you how West treats me. But Hunter?”

My lips pulled into a frown of confusion. “What’s wrong with Hunter? I thought you liked him.”

“I do,” she insisted vehemently. “I do like him. He’s great, it’s just . . .”

I crouched a bit to meet her downcast eyes. “Just what?”

“I don’t know, he’s just . . . hard, I guess. That’s the only way I can think to explain it.”

I shot her a sassy wink, attempting to lighten the tension that had suddenly swelled around us. “Figured you already knew this by now, but the harder the better.”

She rolled her eyes and gave my arm a smack. “That’s not what I mean, and you know it.” She inhaled deeply, like she was trying to get her thoughts in order. “He’s perfectly pleasant whenever we’re at work together, but other than that, the man’s a vault. He doesn’t give anything away, and it’s damn near impossible to get to know him.”

So, he was the strong, silent type, if anything, that just made him even more appealing to me. There was just something about those hard, sexy, broody characters in the movies that drove women crazy. Hunter was a real-life version of every male heartthrob to ever grace the big screen, and I was just like all the hopelessly infatuated women in those movies, drawn to him in a way that couldn’t—or maybe wouldn’t—be ignored.

“There’s nothing wrong with keeping your personal life private,” I defended.

“No, there’s not. But it’s not just that.” She shook her head in exasperation, like she was trying to click her thoughts into place like they were pieces of a puzzle. “I’m not sure there are many people—if any—who know everything there is to know about that man, and I’d hate to see you get hurt because he couldn’t give you what you deserved.”

My mouth curved upward as I grabbed hold of my sister and pulled her into a tight, bone creaking hug. Her concern was the perfect example of that generous and loving heart of hers.

“I love you for caring, Stell Bell.” Untangling her from my hold, I took her by the shoulders and pushed her back just enough that we could see eye-to-eye. “But you don’t need to worry about me.” I winked to stress the point. “I’m a big girl. I know what I’m doing, trust me.”

She didn’t look convinced. “Really?” she asked archly, one brow raising.

I hemmed and hawed for a second. “Well, maybe not. But something tells me it’ll be damn fun, at the very least.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

That’s a wrap on the Hope Valley series by Jessica Prince, and I have loved getting to know these characters along the way!

But this book wasn’t my favorite of the series. While I liked Hunter and Serenity together, I hated how she was pining over him for so long. You are stronger than that, girl! She had some self-esteem issues stemming from her family’s history of being con artists. (She is Stella’s sister.) But I felt that she was waiting around for a Hunter and not living the new life she deserved.

Hunter, meanwhile, had suffered so much loss: his sister, his best friend, the woman he thought he’d loved. And his leg. But he was a marshmallow inside once he decided to stop fighting his feelings for Serenity.

So while I liked the couple together, how they helped each other, and where they ended up, I felt parts of the story were rushed and it just didn’t have the same zing that other books in this series left me feeling. It was still enjoyable and had that nice small-town feel, but it wasn’t my favorite from this series.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. That’s why God created central air, after all.

Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boy–she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.

In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. Not that she’d expect a boy to understand.

Jessica has been writing since she was a little girl, but thankfully grew out of drawing her own pictures for her stories before ever publishing her first book. Because an artist she is not.
