I should’ve known Lincoln Pierce was trouble from the moment I held my knife to his throat.

I’ve been running for most of my life, hiding away in a small town and hoping no one discovers who I truly am. The only problem is that I can never let anyone know the real me. Or at least that was true until my brother moved his best friend onto our shared property.

Now, I’m stuck trying to avoid the nosy billionaire’s probing questions and piercing stares. And it doesn’t help that I almost killed him the first time we met.

Oops.

But when all my carefully crafted lies come crashing down around me, it’s Linc stepping in to shield me. And when it looks like the person hunting me for all those years is back, Linc will do anything to keep me safe.

Only it’s not just my safety at risk. It’s my heart. Because when Linc touches me, I lose all sense. And when I truly get to know the broken billionaire, he’s so much more than a ruthless business tycoon. He’s the man showing me that it’s time to really live.

But I’m not the only one with secrets. Linc has them, too. And when the forces from our pasts emerge from the shadows, it’s with only one goal: to end the new life we’re building together. For good.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Book 4 in the Sparrow Falls series follows Coulson foster sister Arden and Lincoln, who is best friends with her brother Cope, and also the owner of Cope’s hockey team.

I knew going into this that Arden had some kind of traumatic past β€” and I was really interested in getting to know the reason why her guard dog Brutus is her constant companion. Catherine Cowles did not disappoint with the beautiful story she crafted with its strong heroine and stand-up hero. I loved Lincoln and Arden from their first meeting, how he helped her come out of her shell and learn to love again, all the way through the wonderful epilogue.

As with all of CC’s books, there is a thread of suspense throughout the book, and who I *thought* was the villain was not even close. There were two great plot twists that I did not see coming.

I read this book in tandem while listening to the audio with Sebastian York and Samantha Brentmoor. Those two narrators never disappoint, and they brought such a richness to Linc and Arden’s story.

Well done! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Buried Dreams by Natasha Madison

BURIED DREAMS by Natasha Madison is AVAILABLE NOW

Blurb:

Everleigh

One night changed my whole life.

After the truth about that night came out, I left, taking my broken heart with me.

I knew the past was waiting to slice me open again.

But I was left with no choice but to go back.

Feelings and old emotions are like dandelions; no matter how many times you pull them out or try to get rid of them, they refuse to go away.

And he was that for me.

My everything until he was my nothing.

Brock

My father taught me about honor and integrity.

And in one split second, I ruined it all.

I lost the only dream I ever had and everything I ever wanted.

But I had no choice.

I tried to move on with my life.

I put all my focus on my daughter, never expecting to see the one woman I’d loved and lost.

They say time heals old wounds.

They were wrong.

Scars left from the past are easy to reopen.

I just hope I can survive the pain all over again.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Buried Dreams is #3 in the Dream series, which follows a group of friends whose lives were forever changed by a horrendous car accident. This story follows Everleigh and Brock, who split up shortly after the accident nine years ago. When Everleigh’s mom, town baker Maddie, has a heart attack, Everleigh comes back home to help with the bakery… and faces Brock again for the first time since she walked out on him after he made a really bad decision.

There is a lot of anger on both sides β€” Everleigh hasn’t been able to forgive or get over the decision Brock made all those years ago with Waylon’s family. Meanwhile, Brock knew Everleigh wouldn’t be happy with his decision, but he was hoping she would see that he was caught in between a rock and a hard place and did what he did to salvage their future. Now, they are both dealing with nine years of heartbreak and anger, unresolved questions… and the fact that Brock has a darling little girl that was the result of a one-night stand he had while trying to dull the pain of losing Everleigh.

Talk about a fine line between love and hate… Buried Dreams has some really spicy hate sex before Brock and Everleigh hash out the past and admit that they are both still desperately in love with one another. I thought those conversations were handled well, and I appreciated how honest they were with one another. Of course, there was still the lingering question of whether Everleigh would return to her life in Chicago once her mom recovered…. but this book has a HEA (and a great bonus epilogue), so rest assured that things all work out the way they should! Once they moved forward as a couple, I thought things were handled well with Brock’s daughter, Saige.

This temptation is my punishment.

His redemption is my penance.

Jonah Hendrix is the bad boy of the music industry.

As lead guitarist of The Hometown Heartless,

negative press follows him like a scorned lover,

And even his fans fuel the flames of his torched reputation.

Despite his permanent residence in the media,

He’s never been on my radar.

Not until my boss comes to me with a proposition:

Join The Hometown Heartless on tour to redeem Jonah in the public eye,

and finally get the promotion I’ve been working toward.

I’m not a PR specialist, and it’s not my career ambition,

but I’m determined to see this job through.

As long as I treat the surly rock star like a brand,

I’ll succeed in rehabbing his reputation and survive the tour with my sanity intact.

The problem?

Jonah and I have more in common than either of us realized.

And that desire for connection?

It’s proving to be irresistible.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

So, having read the Next Life books, I *really* didn’t know how Brit Benson was going to make me like Claire. Because the girl had done some pretty horrendous things, and I kinda fell in love with Macon and Lennon and despised Claire for the role she played in keeping those two apart.

But then…. But then…. along comes For Wrath and Redemption…. and BB absolutely SLAYS with this story. I was really looking forward to reading Jonah’s book after getting to know him in the other Hometown Heartless books, and wasn’t so sure how I would like him with Claire. But my gosh, these two broken souls get each other on a level that no one else ever has.

This story had me tangled up in knots because these two characters are just damaged. The road they travel is messy, chaotic, and heartbreaking as they both cut themselves open and bleed out for one another. Watching them go from enemies to being each other’s everything was truly a journey. They each are dealing with addiction, and feelings of abandonment, of being cast-aside and unwanted (especially Jonah!). It’s a long and twisted road, and they have to fight to get there, but they eventually find a beautiful, safe space in each other.

Narrators Jason Clarke and Mollie Stark were PHENOMENAL in telling this gutwrenching tale. The level of emotion they each brought to their characters was off the chart. The anguish, the pain, the anger, the tears, the joy… I felt it all as they brought this story to life.

And the bonus chapter was everything I could have asked for as Claire began to repair her relationship with her family.

For Wrath and Redemption far exceeded my expectations for Jonah and Claire! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Meet Brit Benson:

Brit Benson writes real, relatable romance. She likes outspoken, independent heroines, dirty talking, love-struck heroes, and plots that get you right in the feels.

Brit would almost always rather be reading or writing. When she’s not dreaming up her next swoony book boyfriend and fierce book bestie, she’s getting lost in someone else’s fictional world. When she’s not doing that, she’s probably marathoning a Netflix series or wandering aimlessly up and down the aisles in Homegoods, sniffing candles and touching things she’ll never buy.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Chasing Forever by Jessica Prince

CHASING FOREVER by Jessica Prince is AVAILABLE NOW

I’ve never been the kind of man to give much thought to the future. When I pictured what forever looked like, I didn’t see a picket fence, a wife or a bunch of little rugrats running around. I had the dog, and that was good enough for me.

Or it had been, until a woman with dark, silky hair and sad eyes stumbled into my life and shook everything up.

The shadows that haunted Merritt Bell tugged at something deep inside me, bringing to life a primal instinct to protect that was stronger than anything I experienced before. The second I laid eyes on her, I wanted to slay all her demons. Be the knight in shining armor who could bring a smile to her beautiful face.

But before that could happen, I had to earn her trust.

When a family emergency brings her back to town and directly into the path of her estranged, abusive husband, I don’t hesitate to put myself in the middle, even if it means placing a target on my back that my badge can’t protect me from.

Now she and her nephew are living under my roof, and there isn’t anything I won’t do to keep them safe. I might be one of the good guys, but when it comes to protecting the woman who’s stolen my heart and the boy I’ve grown to adore, I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty.

I finally know what my forever looks like, and there isn’t anything that can stop me from chasing it down and holding on tight.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

After getting to know Merritt a little bit in Twice In a Lifetime (Second Hope #3), I was so happy to see her find happiness with Blythe’s brother, Tristan, in Chasing Forever!

The prologue of Chasing Forever overlaps with part of Twice In A Lifetime, when Merritt has been severely beaten by her husband and, with Blythe’s help, is able to leave town. The story then picks up a few months later, when she returned to town to take temporary guardianship of her young nephew, Levi, after her drug-addict brother is incarcerated. Being back in Hope Valley is a risk for Merritt because it’s placing her back in the same town as her estranged husband.

Tristan had felt an immediate connection with Merritt when he helped her leave town, and has been somewhat obsessed with her ever since. When she has no place to live with Levi, he offers to let them move into his home. While I didn’t love that Merritt had come back to town, putting herself back in a dangerous situation, I did enjoy the friendship that grew between her and Tristan, and how he also developed a very sweet relationship with Levi. Through their friendship, and eventual romance, Merritt learns that she’s stronger than she thinks she is, and blossoms into a totally different woman than the one we met in the previous book. And having known Tristan from the time he was a little boy in Nona and Trick’s book (in the OG Hope Valley series), I loved seeing him all grown up and getting a family of his own.

As with every other Jessica Prince story, the heroine finds herself in a dangerous situation, leading our MC to play hero. IHowever, I’ve come to like that predictability from Prince, and was happy to see Merritt and Tristan get to their HEA with Levi.

Chasing Forever is a standalone, but I think that Merritt’s story will make much more sense knowing the full scope of her backstory if you’ve read TIAL first.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Sara Ney

HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT by Sara Ney is AVAILABLE NOW

Blurb:

USA Today bestselling author Sara Ney sizzles with a fast-paced, sexy romp about a sassy fan-girl and flailing hockey star in this hilarious stand-alone…

I didn’t mean to roast Gio Montagalo, goalie and crown jewel of The Houston Baddies hockey team. Honestly, I was screaming at the TV in a sports bar like any self-respecting sports junkie does when their team is on a losing streak! So when his twin sister sidles up on the stool beside me, laughing at my commentary, I figured I’d made a fan, too. What I didn’t expect? For her brotherβ€”the guy I called β€œa flashy ice peacock with the reflexes of a sloth”—to hear about it.

Yikes. What were the odds?!

Next thing I know, Gio is in my DMs with a challenge: β€œHold up a sassy sign at my game and hit me with your best shot. Roast me in front of everyone.” For him, it’s fun. For me, it’s humiliating. But I did it. Glitter included. And because the universe thrives on chaos, the Baddies won.

Now Gio thinks I’m his good luck charm, begging me to show up with more signs. He also wants to see meβ€”off the ice.

What does a hot, hockey hunk want with a bookish girlie like me?

I try to keep my distance. Mostly.

Soon, Gio is showing up at my job for swoony kisses and trying to charm my dogβ€”also named Gioβ€”and failing because my dog hates him at first sight. I wonder if this whole β€œlucky charm” thing has less to do with hockey and more to do with the overwhelming, undeniable pull I feel toward him. Or maybe it’s fate’s way of showing me that sometimes, the guy you roast on national TV can be the one you accidentally fall for.

Fast-paced and hilarious, Hit Me With Your Best Shot is full of electric chemistryβ€”and tons of spice. Austin Adam’s life just went from shouting at the TV screenβ€”to becoming part of the show.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Sara Ney is just a fun, low-drama, sexy romcom between a professional hockey goalie and the fan-girl who has no qualms about publicly roasting him. I loved the connection between Gio and Austin, their witty banter, and their easygoing relationship.

I thought it was a brilliant move on Ney’s part to have Gio’s sister, Nova, be the one who met Austin first and play matchmaker, in a way, between the two. Austin is a diehard Boston Blaze fan, and she had no problem letting the rest of the bar know how badly she thought goalie Gio had been playing lately. Then Gio decides that Austin’s insults are the motivation he needs to start winning games, and the next thing she knows, she is sitting on the ice with a glittery, insulting sign directed at her favorite player.

Their meeting was rather unconventional, but I think that contributed to Austin and Gio’s charm. This story was fun and entertaining, well-written with likable characters, and a sweet ending.

I am really looking forward to Nova and Jank’s book! I am intrigued!!!

HEARTBREAKER

Kat Mizera & Elise Faber

Release Date: March 10

She was just supposed to be a one-night stand…

But then she became my world.

Once, I was the lead guitarist of the hit rock band, Midnight Sun. Then a tragic accident took everything from me. I can no longer play guitar, my wife left me, and the future I worked so hard for is slipping away.

All I am now is a grumpy, infamous, former rockstar.

So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I’m not in the market for a woman, especially not Jade Cantrellβ€”who’s as beautiful and talented as she is sweet.

Then the media pounces on a story about the two of us, and suddenly we’re zipping off to a mountain retreat and writing an album together.

I can’t keep it strictly businessβ€”no matter how hard I try.

And the more I get to know her, the more I know I don’t have any hope of keeping her out of my heart.

One night will never be enough.

I’m going to keep her forever.

When the Game Breakers meet more than hearts will be broken…

They’ll claim, protect, and…maybe just rock their women’s worlds.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I loved Royal and Jade’s story and binged it in a day. Opposites attract in the best way between the bad boy of rock & roll and the good girl of country music.

Not only did this book really do the grumpy/sunshine trope well, but the writers also handled Royal’s disability well. (I wish there was more backstory to the accident that injured him, but I’m guessing that was in a previous book.) There is a lovely arc of growth for both Royal and Jade. She really comes into her own as an artist and on a personal level, goes from having nobody in her corner to being surrounded by Royal’s band of brothers and found family. Royal begins to see his self-worth again through Jade and their songwriting, and I loved seeing him bloom as they worked together and fell in love.

The first book in this series was a miss for me β€” I just couldn’t connect with those characters β€” but Royal and Jade hooked me in from the first moment and totally redeemed this collab for me. I am looking forward to the rest of this series!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars
Β
I knew Crossroads of Love was going to be a forbidden, small-town, second-chance romance, but I wasn’t expecting the suspense and messy family drama that came with it. I thought this was a solid debut novel from Kris Abbott, with strong characters, an interesting story, and lots of secrets and lies.
Β
Nearly 18 years after Gavin broke Lena’s heart in college, he is reluctantly returning home to Hicks Creek for his father’s funeral. What he thought would be a quick trip in and out becomes very complicated when Gavin realizes his estranged father left a very specific clause in his will. There are a lot of inconsistencies in settling up the estate of his brother, Lena’s late husband, who died two years ago. Things don’t add up, and Gavin is determined to get to the bottom of it. It’s clear that there’s still an insane connection between Lena and Gavin, but it’s not so easy for them to get involved again. She is still carrying around a lot of hurt from the way they broke up, she has baggage from the tumultuous marriage that everyone else in town thought was picture-perfect, and as the mayor, Lena worries about the optics of her getting involved with Gavin so soon after Aaron’s death. Over time, Gavin is able to get Lena to place her trust in him again, and just as they work though the past hurts that lie between them, what Gavin discovers about his brother’s shady past threatens to destroy Lena all over again.
Β
I loved the author’s juxtaposition of the literal tornado outside taking place as the characters “reunite” for the first time in years. I also liked how Lena’s teenage daughter, Jayla, was written. She was strong and sassy and adored her uncle, yet she was understandably needed an adjustment to the thought of her mom and uncle dating. I also appreciated how mature she was when it came to realizing how happy Gavin made Lena after the half-life her mom was living when Aaron was alive.
Β
Most of this book was a solid read, but then once the truth about Aaron comes out… it was just too quickly tied up. I felt that part in the end was rushed to get to the last chapter of the book, and I didn’t feel like it was thoroughly explained. Despite that, I thought this was a really solid debut book and I’ll be on the lookout for more from the Hicks Creek series!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Finn by Ashley James

FINN by Ashley James is AVAILABLE NOW

Blurb:

Falling for my girlfriend’s twin brother wasn’t what I had in mind when I hired him to be my son’s nanny.

Working on my family’s cattle ranch, the hours are long, and sometimes unpredictable, so when my regular nanny quits, leaving me in a pinch, I have to think fast.

In walks Ash Tudor.

My opposite in almost every way.

He’s cheerful and bubbly, has horrible taste in music, and does yoga in my yard almost every morning in the tightest shorts I’ve ever seen.

Not that I’m looking.

But it’s none of those things that have me scratching my head and second guessing everything I thought I knew about myself.

No… it’s the fact that he’s a him and I can’t seem to keep my eyes away, no matter how confusing that may be.

I’m nearly thirty, and never once have I looked at another man the way I catch myself looking at him.

The feelings and urges growing inside of me make no sense, and then when he gets a special delivery to the house of items he plans to use on himself, I can’t stop imagining him doing just that… Or imagining me using them on him.

But confusion and curiosity aside, I can’t fall into bed with my son’s nanny.

Doing so would be reckless and irresponsible.

No matter how tempting it may be.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Finn was a really well-done, emotional book of finding love in the place where you least expect it. Finn and Ash’s story had a lot of depth to it, and that extended well beyond the forbidden factor of Finn being Ash’s twin sister’s ex. Amid the flirtations and surprising feelings for one another, both of these characters go through a lot of growth throughout their relationship.

Finn is left in a lurch when his nanny unexpectedly quits on him. Around the same time, Ash loses his job as a teacher due to cutbacks. Problem solved for both of them when Finn’s girlfriend, Violet, recommends her twin brother for the nanny job. Finn and Ash definitely get off on the wrong foot, but with few options and in desperate need for someone to take care of his son, Finn hires him to be Tucker’s nanny.

Finn is as rugged of a cowboy as they come, so it was a shock to him when he began feeling zings for Ash. A tentative friendship forms at first between them, and Finn doesn’t quite know what to do with the feelings he’s developing. Meanwhile, when sassy Ash picks up on Finn’s looks and lingers, he starts pushing buttons, eventually leading Finn to give in to his hang-ups.

Meanwhile, Ash and Violet have a rather complex sibling relationship, and his romance with Finn causes even more problems between them. His estrangement with Violet opens up old wounds for Ash, and leads to a lovely scene between him and Finn that I thought was a real turning point in their relationship and Finn’s unexpected commitment to Ash.

The audiobook is a dual narration by Alex Kydd (Ash) and Gregory Salinas (Finn), who did a great job of playing up the chemistry between the characters as well as the tender moments. Gregory really has the grumpy, broody cowboy thing down pat!

A single night to forget I’m a widowed single dad with a million responsibilities and a ton of emotional baggage. To remember what it’s like to just be a man.

I didn’t need any extra drama in my life. Romantic complications? No thanks. But after that night, everything changed. Forever…

Rowan

Having a one-night stand with a sexy, older stranger was not part of my plan.

All I wanted out of this small town was a place to recover. A fresh start. Maybe even a little New Year’s Eve fun.

I had no way of knowing my hot hookup would be my new co-worker.

Or that I was actually way more fertile than I’d been led to believe…

🎧Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars 🎧

When Rowan and Chance meet at an 80s-themed New Year’s Eve party and have a one-night stand, they never expect to see each other in the office of the brewery that he owns. Or that their bc failed that night, and they are now expecting a baby together.

As a single dad to a 14-year-old who can’t stand him most days, Chance has enough on his plate. But he steps up big time for his new colleague/former fling and offers Rowan a place to stay when she runs out of housing options in Dragonfly Lake. Chance is rather twisted up because of the way his first marriage ended, and while he’s vowed to be there for Rowan as a co-parent, he is hesitant to get romantically involved. But the more time they spend together as housemates, the more Chance is drawn to her. And when the lines he’s drawn for himself get messy one night, will he toss away the best thing that’s happened to him, or take the chance that he’s been given?

Sebastian York is a classic and I loved listening to him and Emma Wilder narrate this story. I also loved the friendship Rowan developed with Sam, and how having another woman to confide in around the house helped heal what was broken between Sam and her dad.

Amy Knupp is a new-to-me author, but I quite liked this story. It’s part of a series with interconnected characters who make up Chance’s found family. I loved the support system he had in his friends and how they immediately adopted Rowan into the fold.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Sound of Forever by Claudia Burgoa

THE SOUND OF FOREVER by Claudia Burgoa is AVAILABLE NOW!

https://geni.us/TheSoundofForever

From USA Today Bestselling Author Claudia Burgoa comes a heart-wrenching, beautifully layered romance about love, loss, and the unexpected paths that bring us together. With a surprise guardianship, a brooding musician, and a slow-burn connection that will make your heart ache and soar.

Morning yoga classes. Afternoon tea. Peaceful evenings in my perfectly curated apartment. My life was calm, predictableβ€”exactly how I like it.

Until one call shattered my carefully built world.

My sister and I were never close, but her unexpected death left me with more than just grief. It left me her daughter, a girl with wide brown eyes and enough questions to break my heart. Now, I’m thrust into a life I never planned, juggling motherhood and grief.

But if that’s not enough, I meet Keane Stoneβ€”a man with a past as broken as mine.

He’s a musician hiding from the world, scarred by a tragedy he can’t forget.

He doesn’t want my help, and I certainly don’t have time for his demons.

But life has other plans.

Somewhere between his haunted melodies and my niece’s innocent laughter, I find myself drawn to him. He’s infuriating, closed-off, and completely unexpected.

Yet, the more I push him away, the more I realize he might be the one to help me rebuild my shattered world.

But how do you heal when the pieces you’re holding don’t seem to fit?

And what happens when the past refuses to stay silent?

The Sound of Forever is a story of healing, hope, and finding family in the most unexpected places.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

The Sound of Forever is a follow-up standalone to The Fault In Forever. Admittedly, I wasn’t much of a fan of Keane’s while reading TFiF β€” until I got to that bonus chapter from his POV. So I was very excited that he was getting his own book, because I really wanted this broody, broken musician to start living life again after his five-year coma and find his other half.

And he finds that in Julianna. They seem to be a very unlikely pair β€” he’s a loner and she’s a free-spirited yoga instructor. At least at first glance. But these two characters are both dealing with so much grief and are unsure how to manage their current station in life. Keane is trying to piece himself back together after a life-changing car accident. I loved getting to know him through his journal entries while he was in rehab, and getting inside his head to see just how devastated he was by the way things fell apart with Ophelia. Meanwhile, Julianna has suddenly and unexpectedly found herself the guardian of her estranged sister’s daughter. She and Rayne are strangers to one another, struggling with navigating their new situation. Then in comes Keane, and he somehow manages to bridge the gap between them. All the while, Julianna helps Keane realize there’s more for him in life than what he’s resigned himself to after his accident. She and Rayne make him want to be a better person. And together, these three broken souls heal one another.

Parts of this story felt rushed to me, and I thought there was an unnecessary road bump with Rayne’s biological father that came out of nowhere. The story would have been fine without that twist, in my opinion. I was much more invested in Julianna repairing her relationship with her own estranged father, and I would have liked to have seen more of that. But at its core, The Sound of Forever was a lovely story about grief, healing, hope, and second chances.
