Sunny Shelly’s Review: Someday You Learn by Harlow James

SOMEDAY YOU LEARN by Harlow James is AVAILABLE NOW

Blurb:

“I’m here to see my fiancé. I believe you know Parker, Dad…”

That sentence seems innocent enough in the right setting.

But the woman’s father? Yeah, he happens to be my boss.

The first time I met Cashlynn O’Neil, she thought she was going to die before the plane we were on ever left the ground.

So I did what any gentleman would do—I comforted her, kept her distracted, and then later that night, she ended up back in my hotel room to thank me.

But then a year later she waltzed in the Carrington Cove Animal Hospital and told her father we were engaged.

And that would have been harmless, except the last time I was engaged it left me scarred beyond repair, vowing never to entertain the idea of love again.

I can’t fall for my boss’s daughter.

I can’t keep lying to myself about how I feel either.

But is it possible that someday you learn that it’s not the wrong person that will make you question what you want in life, but it’s the right one?

And is Cashlynn the right woman for me?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I loved Parker and Cashlynn’s story so much, and the couple on the cover are perfect for how I envisioned these characters in my mind! On the surface, this is a second-chance, fake engagement romance between two people who had a one-night stand. But once you get deeper into the story, it is a beautiful tale of grief and recovery.

Parker has sworn off relationships but allowed himself to indulge in a one-night stand with a beautiful stranger he met on an airplane. They had an incredible connection, and he was flabbergasted when she bolted out of his hotel room afterward. Flash forward to a year later, and Parker is rendered speechless when Cashlynn shows up at the veterinary practice where he works, and it turns out that she his boss’ daughter, and she claims they are engaged!

Parker is so stunted after the failure of his previous engagement, and he truly goes through so much growth before the end of this book. Meeting Cashlynn and falling in love with her (despite his best efforts not to!) changes him and makes him realize that he is more than the trauma of his past relationship and the guilt he’s been carrying around.

Although Parker is hesitant at first (because everyone who knows him knows he has sworn off relationships), he agrees to the “engagement.” Cashlynn is looking to start over her life in Carrington Cove, and with her dad on the brink of retirement, she agrees to nudge her dad in handing over the practice to Parker. As it turns out, Cashlynn is exactly what the buttoned-up Parker needs in his life. He’s so regimented, and she crashes into his space and turns things upside down. Literally and figuratively. (I loved the unplugging of the appliances to get under his skin!)

These two characters balance each other so well, and I thought that Harlow James really wrote a lovely tale in Someday You Learn. Teddy Hamilton is one of my favorite narrators, and I loved listening to him as Parker. He brought such depth to his performance, perfectly executing the nuances of the character’s vulnerability in tender moments as well as the growly lust in the spicier scenes. Likewise, Emma Wilder was vivid in the way she portrayed Cashlynn’s strength and determination as well as her frustration when it comes to her relationship with her father.

I loved how close the siblings are in this book. I jumped into this series for the first time with book 4. I wish I had gotten to know Parker in those previous books, because I feel like I really would have appreciated seeing him find love even more! I am most definitely interested in going back to read the other books in this series, and I am intrigued for Hazel’s book after that teaser at the end!

Meet Harlow James:

Steamy Romance Author

Harlow James is a pen name I use to protect my identity as a high school teacher. Keeping those two roles in my life separate is necessary, but also fun! It’s like a live two lives, and anonymity gives me the opportunity to be bold and take risks in my stories.

I stumbled upon romance novels in 2018 when I picked up Driven by Kristy Bromberg, and I was obsessed. I had just lost my grandmother too, so reading offered me an escape from reality and a chance to grieve on my own terms.

About a year later, I got an idea for my own book and started writing. I researched self-publishing and jumped in with both feet. I had no idea what I was doing!

But now I’ve built a business and hobby that I LOVE! I have an outlet that’s just for me. When I write, I’m not a mom, a wife, or a teacher…I’m a woman who gets to tell stories that no one else can.

My books are the perfect blend of heartwarming moments, full-bellied laughs, and PLENTY of steam to melt your Kindles 😉 And there are always elements of me sprinkled in to every character and story that I write.

When I’m not writing you can find me reading or spending time in my kitchen. I love to cook and feed my family and friends. Otherwise, you can find me watching comedy specials with my husband, camping with our kids, or taking naps. I live for naps 😉

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Second-chance romances are my favorites, and Claire Kingsley knocked this one out of the park with Luke and Melanie’s story!

As Whispers and Wildfire begins, there is the perfect hint of anger between the characters when they almost literally run into each other on the road as Melanie is returning to town to start over again after her divorce. But you can tell that the anger is covering up some bigger, deeply hidden feelings because it is clear that Luke and Melanie have not gotten over one another. Things kick up a notch between them when Melanie temporarily fills in as the receptionist at Haven Auto, adding sexual tension to the past hurts, flirty moments, sizzling sexual tension, and longing glances.

Mixed in through it all is the POV of a third character, a dangerous presence from Melanie’s past. Unbeknownst to Luke or Melanie, that danger is creeping closer and closer to Melanie’s present, bit by bit, and it may very well threaten everything that they are rebuilding together.

I loved this book so much. I loved how Luke embraced Hot Mess Express Melanie (seriously, as a hot mess myself, I related to her so much!), and her chaos was a soothing balm to him. I love that he connected with her voice (she’s a voice actress) before even knowing who she was. I loved how they were both able to acknowledge the miscommunication that led to their breakup in high school, and how they have grown and matured in the years since. And I especially loved seeing the Baileys around town, the cameo from Brynn Miles at Salishan Cellars, and the mention of Cara and Logan at the football game.

Narrators Erin Mallon and Marcio Catalano did a wonderful job portraying Melanie and Luke. I especially loved how Erin Mallon played all of Voice Actor Melanie’s different characters throughout the story. But I especially loved how Robert Hatchet (who has become one of my favorites!) just nailed the creepy antagonist in Whispers and Wildfire!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Everlasting Ink series comes to a end with Lachlan and Maggie in Can We Try? — and it was everything I wanted it to be for this couple!

After getting to know both characters throughout this series’ previous books, I was hoping they would end up together in the end! I loved being able to reread the cabin trip and the Fourth of July fireworks scenes from their POVs.

During the friends’ weekend at the cabin, Lachlan and Maggie, lonely singles of the bunch, agreed to scratch an itch with a one-night stand. They both thought they would be able to move on after the fact (not wanting go complicate the dynamics within the friend group), but neither one of them did.

That night unlocked something for both of them. Lachlan is already considering seeking out more from Maggie when she discovers that their ONS resulted in her getting pregnant. At first they agree to co-parent as friends, but it’s not long until Lachlan decides that Maggie is worth trying for more with. He has an uphill battle ahead of him, because she is carrying around some deep-rooted emotional scars thanks to her manipulative and controlling ex, but he shows up every day in the big and little ways to prove to Maggie that he’s not going anywhere and keeps asking her over and over again: Can we try?

I loved this couple so much! Although I was sad to say goodbye to the Everlasting Ink gang, I loved how this series wrapped up. And with all the babies in the bunch, I would love to see a next-generation spinoff in the future!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: From Asher, With Love by Brittany Taylor

From Asher, With Love by Brittany Taylor is NOW LIVE

He set my heart on fire… then destroyed it.

Ten years ago, I left the ashes of my past behind, determined to fulfill my dream of owning a flower shop in the largest city in the world.

With business now booming, I need to expand my storefront, and I’m desperate for help. So, when my best friend sets me up on a blind date disguised as a business meeting, with the billionaire CEO of the city’s most elite real estate firm, I cave.

What I don’t expect is the billionaire blind date turning out to be my ex-boyfriend.

Though one look is all it takes to know Asher Egan is no longer the boy I once knew from the wrong side of the tracks. He’s an ambitious, insanely wealthy businessman who knows exactly what and who he wants…

Me.

And the longer we work together, the faster the embers of our youthful love begin to reignite.

It’s a shame the pain isn’t as easily forgotten.

Fearing he’ll lose me again, he’s suddenly asking for a future we both walked away from all those years ago.

But will I be able to sift through the ashes of our past and find it in my heart to love him again… or will our second chance at a happy ending threaten to destroy us once and for all?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

From Asher, With Love is a glowup of Brittany Taylor’s 2021 book Paper Hearts. It has been updated and expanded a bit, but the core story between Asher and Charleigh is still the same phenomenal enemies-to-lovers, second-chance romance that I loved back then.

Ten years after Asher ghosted her when they were seniors in high school, Charliegh is shocked to run into him in NYC. And even more shocked that their best friends are siblings, and they never happened to mention the other. Asher is now one of the best realtors in the city, and Charleigh is looking to expand her floral shop. Although she begins working with Asher’s rival, he gets her to take a chance on working with him — which just brings up old hurts and bad memories for both of them.

The story is told in a dual timeline, unfolding between past and present chapters. Asher’s life fell apart the night that their secret teenage romance was exposed. Although he is a successful executive today, back then, they were from opposite sides of the track and Asher didn’t have much going for him in his life. When his life literally went up in flames, he had no choice but to leave Charleigh behind. He never looked back, and assumed she was still living a charmed life all these years, but something was irrevocably broken in Charleigh that night and her relationship with her parents never recovered.

In present day, Asher and Charleigh face their past hurts and address the issues between them and where things went wrong. There are a few twists and turns in this story that I was not expecting. I also loved that the heart-shaped paper notes that Asher left for Charliegh in high school were still a part of this updated story, always signed “From Asher, With Love.” Asher and Charleigh realize that they never stopped loving one another.

Asher and Charleigh’s story is heartbreaking, and their journey back together is full of tears but so beautiful! A marvelous, emotional, second-chance story! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

🎧 🎧🎧🎧 Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars 🎧🎧🎧

“I’m sorry I took your sun away, Little Star.”

This was such a heartfelt, emotional, second-chance romance. I loved how Riggins and Stella’s story unfolded in the past and present chapters, from when they were little kids to how they fell in love and then fell apart. This couple goes through so many highs and lows over the course of the book. I thought that Morgan Elizabeth beautifully handled Stella’s struggles with depression and anxiety as well as Riggins’s alcoholism.

At times, I grew frustrated with Stella for sticking around and not saving herself as Riggins fell deeper into his addiction. How did he not remember that they were married?!?!? I suspended disbelief and just went along with it, figuring that she had blinders on and he was really good at hiding his addiction from her. Both turned out to be true. My heart ached for these two characters, and I really could not wait to find out why he just reappeared again in her life after 7 years, how he finally found out that they were married, and what had happened that led to the miscommunication between them after his father’s funeral that prevented any kind of reconciliation then.

Stephen Dexter and Emma Wilder did a wonderful job in playing Riggins and Stella. They hit all the high highs and all the low lows in bringing this story to life. All My Love is full of some dark moments, but there is also a lot of healing and tender moments as Stella and Riggins piece together the past, let go of old hurts, and forge a new beginning together.

Morgan is a born and raised Jersey girl, living there with her two boys, toddler daughter, and mechanic husband. She’s addicted to iced espresso, barbecue chips, and Starburst jellybeans. She usually has headphones on, listening to some spicy audiobook or Taylor Swift. There is rarely an in between.

Writing has been her calling for as long as she can remember. There’s a framed ‘page one’ of a book she wrote at seven hanging in her childhood home to prove the point. Some layovers are for hiding out in hotel rooms. Some are for adventure. A New Year’s Eve layover in Singapore? For airline captain Camden Whitehouse, that was for meeting Amie, the gorgeous flight attendant from London who he hasn’t been able to get out of his head for almost four years. He still can’t rinse the taste of her skin from his memory. But she snuck out in the middle of the night, and Cam woke up to face the new year alone.

Three years and nine months ago, Amie Caine’s life was turned upside down—by a pilot, of all people. After a few too many Singapore Slings and the most incredible sex of her life with the hottest man she’s ever met, she snuck out of his hotel room without a trace. He left a trace, though, and now that trace is three years old and she looks just like him.

They’ve thought of each other every day—but between the fears, secrets, and lies, and the thousands of miles between them, can they go the distance?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I thought that The Best Bad Decision was a solid debut novel from S. Sidney. I found Cam and Amie to be relatable characters and their overall story heartwarming.

The prologue is told in third person, when Cam and Amie have a one-night stand during a layover in Singapore. She’s a flight attendant, and he is a pilot (for different airlines), and they both find themselves in the city on New Year’s Eve. They spend a wild night together, never exchanging last names or many details about themselves, and Amie sneaks out of his hotel room before dawn. The rest of the book picks up four years later: Cam hasn’t been able to get his mystery woman out of his mind, and Amie is now a single mom to a precocious three-year-old little girl, Maisie. It has been four years, but fate intervenes and puts Cam and Amie together when they run into each other at the same hotel during a layover in Santiago, Chile. Cam can’t believe his good luck that he’s found his NYE woman again, and Amie realizes that the time is now to tell Cam what she couldn’t previously because she had no idea how to get in touch with him.

After the initial shock that he has a toddler daughter wears off, Cam jumps into Daddy Mode. Sidney did a great job in writing this family, not just the relationship that Cam built with his daughter, but the mutual pining between Cam and Amie over their long-distance friendship. It’s so clear they both have deep feelings for each other, but when she lives in London and he’s in Phoenix, how can they make that work? Which one of them will have to uproot their life for them to give it a go? I really liked the way the author handled that obstacle. The progression of Cam and Amie’s relationship from friendship to everything else felt natural and I loved seeing how they found common ground in their parenting and romance.

I look forward to more from S. Sidney with Amie’s friends! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

It all started with a phone call.

I was trying to reach my sister. So, you can imagine my surprise when a deep, ridiculously sexy voice answered the phone…

Mathias Jacobs embodies all that is wrong with basketball players. He’s arrogant, hotter than hell, and the worst part? He’s my new dating coach.

He says I lack confidence. And if anyone can help me land the man of my dreams, it’s him.

All I have to do in exchange is tutor him in math before his grades get him kicked off the team. Piece of cake.

And it would be, if it weren’t for the massive lie he tells my crush to make him jealous.

The next thing I know, TJ is my fake boyfriend, and I’m toeing the line between hating his guts and craving something real.

He might not care if it ends in disaster, but I’d rather die than let a basketball god set my world on fire.

And if I have to go down weaving a web of lies and deceit?

He’s going down with me.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Sincerely, Your Enemy is a spinoff of Eliah Greenwood’s Easton High series and follows former rich girl Lacey, who is now a struggling college student and guardian to her two younger half-siblings. Even though Lacey has a lot on her plate, she reluctantly begins tutoring TJ, one of the guys in her extended friend group (who also happens to be friends/teammates with her high school fling, Theo) in exchange for dating lessons in order to catch another guy’s attention. Eventually, TJ and Lacey even start a fake relationship, but real feelings get involved and the line starts to blur between what is real and what is pretend.

And unbeknownst to Lacey, TJ has ulterior motives in sparking up a friendship with her.

This book is full of several twists and turns that I was not expecting. I really liked TJ as the hero, and as I was reading the story, could not figure out why it was titled “Sincerely, Your Enemy.” And then there is a subplot with missing young women that I felt was unrelated and I wasn’t sure how that would play into the bigger picture. Once it all clicked into place, I enjoyed the overall story Eiah Greenwood was telling, and how Lacey and TJ’s pasts converged in the present.

Both TJ and Lacey had been supporting characters in previous books, and I really liked seeing her shine as the main character here. I thought the relationship that she had with her younger siblings was sweet, even as she grappled with trying to figure out how to parent them after their father’s death. I don’t remember much about TJ from the previous books, but I will say that his character surprised me. I thought he was kind of a cocky jerk at first, but he proved to have multiple layers and was actually dealing with quite a bit as far as his homelife goes, none of which is an easy subject for him to speak about with his friends.

Once the awful truth comes out, it’s crushing for Lacey because she truly was blindsided. And EG had written TJ in such a great way that I really felt badly for him because what he perceived to be was not at all reality. He has a long way to go to grovel, and his Grand Gesture was absolutely perfect.

Having read the Easton High books a few years back, I was thrilled to get updates on Aveena and Xavier, and Finn and Dia. (The timeline of this book is shortly after the Dear Heart duet because Vee and X are still expecting their baby.)

Overall, this book was a pretty surprising story that packed an emotional punch. I really hope that Theo & Vee’s sister get a story soon!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Save Your Breath by Kandi Steiner

Save Your Breath by Kandi Steiner is now live!

THIS JUST IN: HOCKEY BAD BOY AND POP STAR EXTRAORDINAIRE ENGAGED!

That was the headline we’d wanted. If only I’d known the cost to get it.

Aleksander Suter has been my best friend since high school—and the only man who’s ever been able to truly get under my skin. With his reputation for trouble and a smirk that could melt ice, he’s also the NHL’s favorite bad boy.

When my publicist’s plan to fix my image collides with his need to clean up his own, we find ourselves in a fake engagement that feels too real from the start.

Now, I’m releasing my new album, putting on a show for the paparazzi I usually try to dodge, and falling too fast for a man who never falls for anyone. Every stolen glance, every heated touch blurs the lines between us until I’m wondering where the lies end and the truth begins.

And when a hurricane traps us together in his high-rise condo, all my carefully built walls collapse, and resisting the pull between us becomes a losing game.

Suddenly, the stakes are higher than just headlines, and the risks feel more personal than ever.

But as our past resurfaces and old feelings reignite, I realize the biggest risk isn’t losing my career—it’s losing my heart to the one person I thought would never be mine.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Save Your Breath is the latest installment in Kandi Steiner’s Kings of the Ice series. This time around, we have Aleks, who needs a reputation rehab, and his high school best friend, pop star Mia, who also needs to fix the media’s opinion of her ahead of her next album release. And so we have a fake relationship between two best friends who have secretly been in love with one another. And the “fake” feelings end up not being very fake at all.

This book was a wonderful slow burn, feel-good romance. There is so much mutual pining between Aleks and Mia, with each of them afraid to tell the other how they really feel. She’s afraid of being hurt again, after he turned her down back in high school, and for Aleks, Mia has always been “it.” Their story draws upon the rich history between them, and there’s this simmering sexual tension that just grows and grows until it combusts.

With a pro athlete MC and pop star FMC, Save Your Breath definitely gives off some Taylor Swift/Travis Kelce vibes. It’s pretty low-angst (other than just wanting to scream at Aleks and Mia to get on the same page!) and a feel-good romance that is an easy read. Along with the ebook, I listened to the audio. Talia Wilkerson Grove and Walker Williams are both new-to-me narrators, but I very much enjoyed how they voiced Mia and Aleks.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Her love for writing started at the ripe age of 10, and in 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.”

She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a hopeless romantic and found herself bursting at the seams with love stories she was eager to tell.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, planning her next adventure, or pole dancing (yes, you read that right). She enjoys live music, traveling, hiking, yoga, spending quality time with her family (fur babies included) and soaking up the sweetness of life.

Sunny Shelly’s Audio Review: Catch Her Heart by Julia Jarrett

🎧🎧🎧 Catch Her Heart by Julia Jarrett is AVAILABLE NOW in AUDIO! 🎧🎧🎧

⚾️

I’m the oldest virgin in major league baseball. And I’m in love with a woman who’s about to marry someone else.

Listen. It’s not like I planned to still be a virgin at twenty-eight. Or to fall in love with the team trainer, who apparently would rather date a guy who wears polo shirts instead of baseball pants.

But life doesn’t always go according to plan.

When I first laid eyes on Lark Miller, I knew she was something special. Unfortunately, so did her boyfriend.

For years I kept my feelings hidden. I accepted my role as best guy friend, and focused on my career. My priority needs to be securing another contract with the Vancouver Tridents so I can help my parents retire. I can’t afford any distractions.

But then the day comes that Lark shows up at my door, and tells me she’s ended her engagement. Not only that, but she’s broken up with polo shirt guy.

And then she kisses me.

My fantasy becomes my reality. Lark wants me. Me. She’s perfect, we’re perfect, everything is perfect. I’ve got the woman of my dreams, and the best part is she understands how important baseball has to be for me right now.

But remember what I said about life not going according to plan?

My name is Dan “Monty” Montgomery: Formerly the oldest virgin in baseball, and now the newest expectant father.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

We are back with the Vancouver Tridents and catcher Dan “Monte” Montgomery and team trainer Lark. We have seen Monte pining for Lark throughout the first two books in this series, always keeping a proper distance since she had a boyfriend. Catch Her Heart opens with Lark telling Dan that she has gotten engaged. Of course, he is crushed, but he remains steadfast as her friend and support system… and then the day comes when Lark realizes that she can’t go through with the marriage. And Dan finally has his opening…

This was a really cute friends-to-lovers romance. I am a sucker for secret tattoos, so I squealed with glee when Lark noticed Dan’s bird tattoo. And the star! Oh my goodness, this man was swoony. Once Lark and Dan cross the line from friends/roommates to being romantically involved, things move super fast. But… i didn’t hate it. I loved how strong their friendship was, and it was a natural progression as they moved to dating and then expecting a baby when Lark unexpectedly gets pregnant.

Narrators Victoria Connelly and Tim Page did a great job with Lark and Dan’s story; I really liked the attention to detail Page gave with Dan’s Canadian accent!

I received a complimentary copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Loving You by Jami Rogers

Loving You by Jami Rogers is now live!

Never lie about having a boyfriend, and definitely don’t give them a name.

I honestly thought there was no harm last summer in naming Miles Asher as my boyfriend. I was convinced my friends from that part of my life would never meet him.

I mean, come on, I’m a travel influencer constantly moving from one beach to the next, and Miles is a small-town mechanic. He loves his family and friends, and he’s a nice guy. Or so they say. Miles has never cared for me.

But now I’m staying in his town of Lovers for the summer, and—surprise!—my vacation friends are too.

Luckily, after he tells me no twice, I persuade Miles to be my boyfriend.

Then I talk him into letting me rent the apartment next to his house.

Together, we convince the town that we are dating.

But … one touch leads to another, and then there’s a kiss, and it becomes very hard to resist a man who makes me want things I’ve never wanted before. Who looks at me as if I’m the only thing that matters.

Still, none of that changes the fact that when the summer is over, I’ll leave.

My life and my job are to travel. His isn’t.

Knowing how this ends was supposed to be the easy part.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Loving You was an adorable fake dating, feel good, small-town romance between travel influencer Quinn and mechanic Miles.

Quinn had no idea that a little white lie she told over a year ago that she was dating a guy from her grandma’s town would come back to bite her in the butt, but when her influencer friends end up visiting Lovers, she has to think and convince Miles to go along with her ruse. Miles gets something out of their fake relationship too — he wants a returnee tourist he’d hooked up with a few times to leave him alone — so they agree to fake date for a few weeks. Of course, feelings get involved, and it’s not long before Miles and Quinn agree to end their fake relationship in favor of a real one. But she’s still planning to leave at the end of the summer and return to her travels… are they destined to be a right person, wrong time kind of couple?

The banter between these two was so much fun, and I loved how their personalities balanced each other out. It was so easygoing between Quinn and Miles, and the slow burn had me rooting for this couple to work out their differences. And that ending? Perfect!

Loving You is a standalone, but takes place the summer after Hudson and Sadie (Promise Me), so there are references to that story. It was established in Promise Me that the Ashers live in the same world as the Love Or Bust guys — I loved the crossover with Tobias and Natalie from Always Been Write (he’s Quinn’s brother) and Grandma Betty.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
