Sunny Shelly’s Review: Make Me Hate You, by Kandi Steiner

“This is a return to the Kandi Steiner of 2016 who brought us Weightless and A Love Letter to Whiskey. Prepare for the burn.” — Author Sarah E. Green

Make Me Hate You, an angsty, emotional stand-alone romance from bestselling author, Kandi Steiner,is LIVE!

If he kisses me right now, I’ll drown.

Every sip of air is shallow and burning, because in the arms of my best friend’s brother, I’m the closest I’ve ever been to sin.

His eyes flick to my lips, and I remember the first time I tasted him, seven years ago before I left this town and vowed never to return. His hands grip my waist, and I remember the pain when he rejected me, when my entire world crashed down at his command. His jaw clenches, and my senses come alive with one stinging reminder.

I’m not his to kiss, and he’s not mine.

I tried to stay away from Tyler Wagner, putting an entire country between us. But when his sister’s wedding brings us back to the same town, to the same house, I can’t avoid him, no matter how hard I try.

He’s always there, his dark eyes bewitching, luring me into their depths. The memory of us pulls me under like a rip current, and when he flashes that smile, I lose my breath, along with my will, unable to escape his grip and find the surface.

Now, hours before our plus ones arrive for the wedding, I’m in his arms, begging him to make me hate him, knowing he never could.

If he kisses me right now, I’ll drown.

And I’ll take him down with me.

Make Me Hate You is a best friend’s brother romance that will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

“It’s you who is killing me. It’s this thing that never was, but always is, that never will be and will never it be.”

Holy crap. I’m not going to say much in this review, because if you are a fan of Kandi Steiner, then you know what she is capable of. Make Me Hate You is another perfectly angsty, sobbing into the pillow kind of romance that will leave you with a major book hangover. And then going back to reread the crapton of passages that you highlighted.

No? Just me? I devoured this book in a day. Thankfully it was rainy today and my kids were perfectly happy watching TV, because I could not tear myself away from Tyler and Jasmine.

Just get the tissues ready and dive in.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt:

Seven miles and an hour later, and all the anxiety I’d felt the night before was completely gone.

At least, until I rounded the foyer into the kitchen and saw I wasn’t the only one up early on Sunday morning.

Tyler sat at the kitchen island, still in his navy blue sweat pants and simple white t-shirt, with one foot planted on the ground and the other hooked casually on the lower bar of his stool. His hair was an absolute disaster, the boyish waves sticking up this way and that. He had both hands wrapped around a mug of hot tea, his eyes focused on the iPad he had propped up in front of him, and BlueTooth headphones in his ears.

At first, he didn’t notice me, and I slowed my steps, standing silently at the entry of the kitchen and watching him. I’d done everything I could last night to avoid his gaze, to not look at him, and now that I had a stolen moment to observe, I found my chest tightening again, my mouth dry and sticky.

His brown eyes were hidden beneath bent brows, expression serious as he watched whatever was on the screen. Small lines creased the edges of his eyes — lines that weren’t there when we were kids. He’d grown into a man somehow, overnight, it seemed. Then again, it had been years.

I’d seen him on social media, watched from afar as his YouTube channel took off. I’d seen pictures of him on Instagram — traveling through Europe, hiking in Australia, swimming in hot pools in Iceland. I didn’t follow him, of course, but his profile was public, which allowed me to flip through picture after picture on the nights when I was a pathetic mess.

But, pictures and videos didn’t do justice to the actual man who sat studiously at that kitchen island.

He was something between the boy I used to love and the man I’d never know, familiar and unreachable all at once.

Tyler shook his head at something, letting out a frustrated sigh and kicking back the bar stool a little before taking a sip of his tea. His eyes flicked to me then, back to the screen, and then, he did a double take, this time fixing his gaze on me and leaving it there.

Something changed in his eyes when he looked at me, like a shadow passed over them and held him captive. I was dressed in jogger shorts and a modest tank top, but from the way he watched me, I might as well have been completely naked.

That’s what his gaze did to me, what it always had done.

It stripped me bare.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Hooked On Her, by Stacey Lynn

HOH - BT banner

“Stacey Lynn always knows how to perfectly balance sexy and sweet.”
New York Times bestselling author Lauren Layne

Hooked on Her, an all-new fun and flirty forbidden romance from Stacey Lynn is out now!

HookedOnHer-IceKings-ebook

Tessa Chauncy is the best kind of trouble. Beautiful, sweet and completely off limits. I’ve sat by and watched other men drool after her and forced myself to stay in check. Hey, I’m in the NHL… I have self-control in spades.

Except when it comes to her.

With the bat of her lashes and quick whip of that sharply pointed tongue Tessa can knock grown men to their knees. I’ve seen them wither and crumble under her confident stare— something I’m pretty sure she learned from sparring with me, thankyouverymuch.

But I’m not just falling for her. I’m down for the count.

She’s the girl I wanted, when wanting her was wrong.
She’s also my new roommate–
And oh yeah, my best friend’s little sister.

Heaven help me, I’m probably going to get his fist to my face or his hockey stick shoved in very dangerous places for what I’m about to do, but I don’t think I care anymore.

I’m in love with my best friend’s little sister….and I’m done waiting.

Excerpt:

I scoop more chicken onto a folded chunk of naan and moan as I savor the taste. There are some decent restaurants where I live, all within walking distance, which is a bonus, but none are as good as Tandor’s. I can’t even piece together what makes it so delicious but it’s mouth-watering amazing.

“Jesus, Tessa. Can you not sound like you’re having an orgasm when you eat?”

I choke on my chicken and wash it down with my water. “Don’t like it, you can leave.”

“But then I won’t be able to share with you why I’m here.”

The chicken I’ve devoured rolls in my stomach. Obviously it’s not because he’s a nice guy. I lean back in my chair. “What is it?”

He huffs a laugh and I hate he looks so damn good, smirking at me, shaking his head like I’m some amusing little thing.

“You’re cute, Tessa. I ever tell you that?”

“I think the day you took me to get stitches in my head, yeah. You bopped me on the nose with a finger and said ‘cute and tough, nice’ before ignoring me the rest of the weekend.”

I’m mortified with myself. He’s not supposed to know these things, know how much I remember every.single.encounter with him ever.

His mouth opens a bit and he stares at me. Yeah. That dose of word vomit probably surprises the hell out of him too. But hell, in for a penny. He says he doesn’t give a shit about what Sawyer thinks? He should know what I think.

“I’m pretty sure that’s the day I started having a crush on you.”

He doesn’t take his eyes off me as he chews on what I think is chicken tikki masala. Slowly, he swallows and sets his own fork down. Leaning forward, elbows on the table, I’m tempted to drop my gaze to his mouth and watch his full lips move so sexily as he opens his mouth and asks, “Want to know when it started for me? When I started facing the reality that it was my best friend’s little sister that made my dick hard in my dreams at night and when I was on the road?”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Hooked On Her is the latest installment in Stacey Lynn’s Ice Kings hockey romance. This time around, we get Jason, brother of Jude from Playing To Win, and Tessa, the little sister of Jason’s teammate/best friend Sawyer. Jason has had a thing for Tessa for years, but she lives in Canada and she’s always had a boyfriend. Tessa has had a crush on Jason, too, but figured he always looked at her like a little sister.

When Tessa needs to crash with Sawyer after her ex-fiance steals pretty much all of her belongings, Jason swoops in like a white knight, offering Tessa a place to stay to rebuild her life and a potential new job so she can be closer to her brother. Jason has an ulterior motive in finally hoping to make Tessa realize that he wants her as more than just a friend. He comes on a little strong, but does he need to push Tessa out of her comfort zone to get himself out of the friend zone?

I liked this book, but I didn’t *love* this book. It was standard fare brother’s best friend/friend to lovers/roommate trope. It’s enjoyable and a perfect binge read, low-drama and a slow burn. But there wasn’t anything *fantastic* about this couple that left me with a book hangover and wanting to return to their love affair over and over again.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Throughout the Baileys series, we’ve seen bits of Juno and Colton’s friendship, a friendship that the family matchmaker insisted was completely platonic. Now we know about the occasional hookups between them over the years — and how Juno couldn’t admit to herself that she was in love with her best friend until he was about to marry someone else.

Getting the backstory to their friendship — just how deep their connection runs — was amazing. And there is an awesomely sweet scene between Colton and Liam (Savannah’s husband) in a flashback chapter, where they declare that they need to be there for the siblings, that made me feel all gooey inside.

Despite being a matchmaker — the gene apparently ran in her mom’s family — Juno is the worst when it comes to finding herself a mate. Colton has been right in front of her for their entire lives, but she’s been blind to his feelings. Now that he’s about to marry beautiful, exotic Brigette, Juno is starting to panic. The pain she feels in having lost her parents at a young age has affected all of Juno’s relationships since then, but most especially the one she has with Colton. She’s so afraid to be left behind by him that she’s afraid to take a chance on moving forward.

The confrontation between them when Juno finally tells him what she’s been feeling is EPIC. I loved that Colton lashed out at her rather than just falling at her feet. Of course, they kiss and make up shortly after, and then give a real relationship a shot. It’s a wonderful slow-burn romance, but will Juno’s hangups get the better of them before they can really become something more?
Juno and Colton’s book hit all the right boxes for a slow-burn, friends-to-lovers romance. And that tease at the end leading to Kingston’s book had me screaming out in frustration! Holy smokes!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Wrong Text, Right Love is a cute start to a new series. A reclusive billionaire is the grumpy next-door-neighbor to a #bestlife influencer, and her sexy podcasts tick him off. Ford — or Chad as Persy initially thinks his name is — doesn’t believe in love. Persy is all about finding your own happiness. But her new book deal means that finding her own happiness means finding a boyfriend. She’s had a string of bad relationships with guys who think she’s fun but not wife-material. Chad/Ford, who has sworn off love, gives Persy a lot to think about when it comes to the opposite sex.

Then there are the text messages between “Joy” and “Lang” — when Persy drunk-texts her ex one night, she accidentally starts texting a stranger instead. Shocker: it’s Ford. They start to fall for one another without knowing who the other is, with both of them feeling like they can be themselves and not hide behind the facade they show the world.

I really liked how they got to know each other through both the text messages and Chad “helping” out on Persy’s podcasts. It was a clever twist on the enemies-to-lovers trope. I wanted more about Ford’s backstory, though. What happened to make him go into his batcave? Where do his trust issues come from? Who betrayed him? There were pieces of it, but I felt like I needed more. Also, a lot seemed to take place off the page. One of my pet peeves is being told something happened, not shown that something happened. Like, what was the deal with Persy and her mom in the kitchen that led to Ford discovering who she really is? That all happened in his POV and then in text messages, and I wanted to see more of it.

I read that Nate and Nyx are the next book in this series and I am all about that! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Like You Hurt is the second book in the Devilbend Dynasty series by Kaydence Snow. It’s a darker YA romance, set in an elite preppy high school where spoiled rich kids do nasty and bad things. It was good, but I didn’t love Hendrix and Donna as much as I loved Mena and Turner from Like You Care. I thought Donna was a great character in LYC, the way she stood up and protected her cousin. But in this book, her Queen Bee status at the school really comes through and she’s a bully when it comes to new kid Hendrix and how she gets the other students to flat-out ignore him.

Of course, Donna has issues. She’s sneaking off to do very bad things on the weekends, living a bit of a double life. It’s the only thing she feels she is in control of, and she becomes Dark Donna when she chases the high of being the bad girl. Hendrix stumbles upon her secret by accident, and it shifts things between them. As Donna learns, they are more similar than she’d like to admit.

Hendrix has his reasons for being so closed off, as a result of the incident a year ago that caused him to change schools his senior year. But when he sees the path of destruction that Donna is set on, he is always there trying to protect her and keep her as safe as he can. They start out as hate-f**ks, but eventually become so much more.

I just didn’t *get* the feelings between them. I liked the story and the journey that Donna goes through, and how Hendrix is now trying to lead a different life. But I didn’t love them together as a couple. She was mean and nasty, and my opinion of her definitely changed. But again, I liked the story — just not her as a heroine. I’d still like to read the upcoming books in this series because I am definitely intrigued, though.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Hard Pass, by Sara Ney

“Hard Pass.”

That’s what the last girl I slept with said when she got her first sober glimpse of me. She laughed, walked out of my penthouse—and I never saw her again. It doesn’t matter that I’m a rich, professional athlete; what mattered was my face.

Beauty might only be skin deep for some—but I know better.

That’s what the last girl I spoke to said over the phone when I made her an offer she couldn’t refuse. Desperate to sell a set of rare baseball cards, she’s clever and entertaining. Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Hard Pass is a funny, lighthearted, easy read from Sara Ney, kicking off her new Trophy Boyfriend series. I thought that Miranda and Noah were adorable! They each believe that there is nothing special about them, but to one another, they are a prized treasure.

Miranda is selling her grandfather’s beloved baseball cards to fund her new design business. Noah, the shortstop for Chicago’s beloved baseball team, wants to buy one but has some serious self-esteem issues. He and Miranda hit it off over text messages, and they both like one another and feel a spark of a connection. But because Noah is so down on himself, he sends his pal Buzz in his place, which leads to an epic case of mistaken identity when Miranda later runs into both guys at a club.

Noah is such a sweetheart. He’s kind and reserved, plays baseball for the love of the game, not the fame. I kept waiting to see *what* was wrong with his face that made him such a “hard pass.” I felt so badly for the guy, but he was such a sweetheart! Miranda thinks she is a plain jane, but she is sassy and spunky and Noah thinks she is beautiful.

This story is a perfect summer binge read, complete with likable characters, funny sidekicks and a lot of steam. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Faked, by Karla Sorensen

Title: Faked
Author: Karla Sorensen
Genre: Sports Romance
Release Date: June 16, 2020

Every action has a consequence, and Claire Ward knows it. And yet, even knowing that her decision to swap places with her identical twin sister, Lia, for a night could be disastrous, she still does it.

Why?

Because it will give her an evening with the man she’s been crushing on for years, Lia’s best friend, Finn.

Miss Straight A Student has thought through all the angles, and knows the risk is worth it. And everything would have been fine, if Finn had been the one to show up at her door.

But it wasn’t.

Bauer Davis— Finn’s half brother and his exact opposite in just about every definable category is the one waiting for her instead. A professional snowboarder, Bauer is covered in ink, full of attitude, and has a chip on his shoulder the size of Mt. Olympus. The kind of bad boy that Claire has never been attracted to before.

Now the good girl is with the wrong brother for a night, and when the consequence is that they have to pretend to be together for an event, it’s nothing she could have predicted. But maybe, just maybe, what makes Bauer so bad, is exactly what Claire needs.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

So. Damn. Good. Claire and Bauer are perfection.

I loved Lia and Claire in The Marriage Effect, and the shenanigans the twins got into when Paige and Logan were dating. So I was super excited to see what would become of the twins as young women. A twin swap goes astray in Faked when Claire attempts to take Lia’s place to get closer to her crush, Finn, but Finn’s half brother shows up instead. Bauer knows right away that it’s Claire, not Lia, who he’s picked up for the charity dinner and they pretend to be dating to impress an investor for his parents. But there is so much more to this fake relationship as the story unfolds.

At first glance, Claire and Bauer are quite the opposites-attract kind of couple. But they are also kind of kindred spirits: She’s always felt interchangeable with her twin sister, like she didn’t have an identity of her own, and he has always been the outcast of his family. The black sheep stepson.

Bauer is all bravado and cocky swagger, but he is such a kind, sweet soul underneath that facade. He’s never known what it is like to have someone firmly in his corner. He’s never felt love and safety and security in another relationship the way that he feels when he spends a snowed-in weekend with Claire. Meanwhile, Claire feels beautiful and strong when she’s with Bauer, and for the first time in her life, she has something that belongs only to her. Something that her twin didn’t have first. But when Bauer finds out that the only reason he and Claire met to begin with was because she wanted a shot with his brother, will their actual attempt as a relationship be over before it gets a chance to start?

I loved how fragile Bauer really is underneath all of his tattoos and piercings. He has zero frame of reference when it comes to being loved and in a supportive relationship and he tries so hard for Claire. For her, he’ll try. And when he freaks out and walks away, he returns to grovel with the help of the most adorable furry friend. And as it turns out, badass snowboarder Bauer Davis is perfect boyfriend material.

Well, let’s see … I’m a wife and a mother. If the things that I write bring a smile to someone’s face, then I’ve done my job. I am obsessed with Outlander (both the books and the show). I’m almost exclusively a romance reader, which means some people will never consider me a literary snob. If I could meet one historical figure, it would be Jane Austen. I received my Bachelors in Public Relations and worked in health care marketing before I had my babies. I hate Twitter. I do it, but I hate it. Also, if you want to get on my good side, bring me wine and I’ll love you forever.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Can a marine biologist and an underwear model find true love? Brooke and Dylan have been best friends since they were kids, but a vacation fling while he’s visiting her in California turns into something more in this best friend’s romcom.

Brooke sees Dylan in a new light during his trip, and they agree to have a little no-strings-attached fun while he’s in town. Their flirty banter and easy relationship makes Brooke wonder why they never dated while they were in high school. But when Dylan pushes for more, Brooke’s insecurities get the best of her as she wonders how their different lives will match up. She’s a student; he’s a famous model.

This is a cute friends to lovers romance, but it touches on some deeper subjects like mental illness, strained parental relationships, eating disorders and abortion. Those topics shaped who Dylan and Brooke are, and play a big part in their journey. As a couple, Brooke and Dylan are likable, lovable characters. He is so supportive and is just there for Brooke always, no questions asked. Even when she has a family issue after they split. And even though Dylan has always been her best friend, Brooke learns there is so much more to him than just a handsome face. I loved their fall from friends to more!

I haven’t read the other stories in this Chemistry Lessons series, but Brooke’s group of friends is a close-knit bunch, and there is a great support system there between them. I learned more random (and gross!) whale facts than I ever imagined I would in this cute story. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

“Everyone deserves a chance to be rescued.”

That’s the mantra I’m repeating when a well-equipped biker pulls over to save me. One glance at the scowl Crawford Doxe is wearing proves he isn’t impressed with the task. My efforts to change his mind deflate faster than the shredded tire at our feet. But disgruntled or not, my so-called hero still agrees to fix my flat.

I don’t expect to see Crawford again, but he’s suddenly very visible in our small town. Avoiding him would be my preference. That’s not how this story goes. For whatever reason, my daughter finds an ally in the broody mechanic. Denying her is something I do my best to avoid. I can only hope Crawford’s shine wears off before he tarnishes what little trust still exists.

As if the odds are ever on my side.

Commitments are a foreign concept to him. He doesn’t make any promises to try. That should’ve been enough for me to steer clear. It most certainly isn’t.

What follows can only be described as a disastrous clash of epic proportions.

But one indisputable fact remains. That lone soul has no plans of opening his heart.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Return to the small town of Silo Springs in Loner, a sexy enemies-to-lovers romance from Harloe Rae.

When single mom Keegan breaks down on the side of the road, her white knight comes in the form of a burly, reclusive mechanic on a Harley. And she rescues him right back. While her daughter Millie takes an immediate liking to Ford, he and Keegan can’t stand one another from the get-go. But the more time Ford reluctantly spends with Millie and her mom, he realizes just how lonely his life really is. He is not a people person and prefers the company of his dog to most humans, but there is something about little Peep and her mom that make Ford want to be around them all the time.

Ford and Keegan’s romance starts out pretty much as a one night stand hate lay. But once they get over their distaste for one another, their relationship sizzles. They both have a lot of emotional baggage (her past bad relationships and his horribly cruel father), but they find solace in one another and someone to lean on as they slay their demons.

This story is just as much about Ford and the friendship he develops with Peep as it is about his and Keegan’s romance. Harloe Rae does a great job of developing both relationships independently, and I loved how turned inside out Ford gets around Millie.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

It’s Only Temporary is another good addition to Lisa Suzanne’s interconnected standalones about the rock group MFB. This time around, we get bassist Kane’s story. We’ve gotten to know Kane throughout these books as the attached one of the bunch, having a longtime girlfriend in Sierra. So I was really interested to see where Lisa took Kane in his book. I figured that there would be some roadblock for Kane and Sierra, and we got it in the form of up-and-coming singer Ruby.

Kane has been feeling kind of off for a while. He hasn’t been totally happy with his life, and kind of complacent in his relationship with Sierra. And as his other bandmates get engaged and married and start families, Kane isn’t sure if that is what his life path holds. But a temporary job as Ruby’s bassist while MFB is on a hiatus turns his life around when she ends up winning a date with Kane at a bachelor auction.

This story was a lot to take in. Kane is faced with some difficult decisions, and whether or not he should pursue something with Ruby or try to get Sierra back is just one of them. Ruby is a great character. She’s sassy and sweet, and trying to protect a heart that has been broken by a fellow musician. She’s got some secrets of her own, and she’s hesitant to let Kane into that part of her life for quite a while. Kane struggles with a lot over the course of this book, and by the end, he makes a decision that I never saw coming… and I don’t know what to expect from the next book in this series now!

I really loved that this story was totally told from Kane’s POV. There was something about getting that front-row seat to his angst and indecision that really cemented this story for me.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
