I struggled with this book. Alot. And I’m sure it’s because I did not read The Ribbon Duet previously. While The Son & His Hope is a standalone, Jacob is the son of Ren and Della from the Ribbon Duet, and I just did not have the emotional connection to the hero that many other reviewers seem to have had.

The book is really long, and that fed into my struggle get through this. Yes, it’s an epic story between Jacob and Hope. She really, really wants to save him and little by little, she does give him hope that life is better than what he’s living. But for me, this just wasn’t an amazing read that I’ll be coming back to time and time again for another read.

If you could pick one word to describe yourself, what would it be?

If you’d asked me a few years ago, I would have said shy. Seriously, turtles had nothin’ on me. I was the girl in school who always pushed her hair down around her face, sat in the back of the classroom, and rarely raised her hand. I never would’ve described myself as brave. Or deadly.

Of course, I’m all grown up now, nearly twenty-two, and I can’t afford to be that girl anymore. Especially because I need money. A lot of it. Which is why I’m standing in the slushy mud after hiking seven hours in the freezing Alaskan snow while carrying a fifty-pound pack filled with survival gear. This is the world’s toughest job interview, but if I pass, I’ll make three times what I could anywhere else.

A projectile whizzes past my ear, and I plunge headfirst into a thick pile of snow between two towering pines. Jesus! Who am I kidding? I’m no GI Abi! I’m a certified geekoid. “Grace…” Even after a decade her name tasted sinfully good rolling off his tongue.

Her hand slid from the doorknob, hanging limply by her side. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came. A long moment later, “Reed,” slipped from her lips like the secret he’d once been.

His gut clenched with longing. He couldn’t help but study her—and that angered him as much as it eased the worries about his ability to feel that had plagued him for years. He hadn’t been all in with a woman since Grace, and he’d begun to think he’d exaggerated what he’d felt when they were together. But there was no misreading the heat thrumming through him. She looked incredible, and confused, and as her hand settled on her hip—the hand he remembered all too well digging into his back when they’d made love all those years ago—he realized she also looked angry. Definitely angry.

But still incredible.

In the space of a breath he was fighting the urge to figure out how to spend time with her and recapture the fire between them despite everything she’d put him through.

He studied her, while trying not to at the same time. The chip on her shoulder was bigger now, overshadowing the sexy smirk on her lips. She’d always exuded confidence, but somehow that, too, seemed more intense. His heart thumped harder with the memory of the first time he’d spotted her standing on the sidelines in her cute cheerleading uniform as he headed out to the football field. She’d challenged him with her glare, as if she were playing on the rival team rather than cheering for them. She’d hated that cheerleading outfit, but man, he’d loved it. And that challenge she’d emitted? He’d taken her up on that in a hot second.

But she’d kicked him to the curb once, he reminded himself. Why was he giving her any consideration at all? He had a job to do, and sure, he’d momentarily lost his footing and checked her out, but it wasn’t like that was a crime. She was hot, and they had history. That’s as far as it goes.

I have been waiting for Dallas and Kitty’s story ever since I read Train Wreck back in 2017, and TG did not disappoint!

Dallas and Kitty had a one night stand before this book takes place; I’m guessing that happens during Train Wreck. Somehow, they’ve remained friendly after their ONS. Dallas doesn’t do relationships and doesn’t generally repeat. But he’s had one whackjob after another. Kitty picks the wrong guys time after time. So they make a pact to give the other insider info to how the opposite sex thinks. The original pact morphs into getting to know one another better, no sex allowed, but then sleepign together a month later to determine if the sex is better. Because Mason, the new guy at the tattoo shop swears to Dallas that it will be.

I love that during those few weeks, Kitty and Dallas — who were already casual friends as Eve and Josh’s best friends — slid into a relationship without even realizing it. Everything comes so naturally between them, and it is effortless. The makeouts are hot and heavy, the dialogue between them is witty and fresh, and they share a very similar outlook on just about everything.
It’s not long before Kitty realizes that she has major feelings for Dallas. But since he’s so anti-commitment, she keeps it to herself so she doesn’t risk losing her best friend. Little does she know that Dallas has fallen in love with her as well. And I loved that TG SHOWS us how that happens. Being told something is true is a major pet peeve of mine, but TG does a fantastic job of outlining exactly how Dallas falls for his best friend…. without even sleeping with her!

Dallas and Kitty alone may both be like a car crash that you just can’t help but stop and gawk at, but together, they are a wonderful hot mess. TG did a great job with this couple’s book! I can’t wait to see what happens next with Mason and Bec!
