SYNOPSIS

Life isn’t a game.

Life isn’t an empty bottle of bourbon spinning on a warehouse floor as I hold my breath.

I feel weak when others perceive me as strong.

I’m passionate though I appear to hate the world around me.

I see beauty in all ugly things.

I feel pain when I laugh.

No one knows the truth.

Well, no one knew the truth until now.

Somehow, Brody Pearson understands more about me than anyone else in my life. The severed connection should mean something significant, but I don’t know if I can forget all my self-proclaimed promises.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I was so happy to read Journey and Brody’s story! A stand-alone in the Barrel House Series, this book overlaps the end of Bourbon Love Notes, and is the story of Melody’s sister and Brett’s brother.

Bourbon On The Rocks was much more intense than Bourbon Love Notes. Journey is all kinds of messed up emotionally. She’s had some serious repercussions to live with after some mistakes she made when she was younger, and those choices still effect her even as a grown woman who is almost 30. She’s also suffering from an eating disorder, which was an undertone of this story and a subplot that I thought was handled well.

I wouldn’t call this a traditional second-chance romance, but Journey and Brody, but the kiss they shares one New Years Eve a decade ago set her on the path of destruction and devastation that she’s been trying to work her way out of ever since. It all unfolds in flashbacks, and there are some brilliant twists to Journey’s story.

Brody, meanwhile, is just kind of stuttering through his life after his divorce, trying to raise a tween daughter. Journey lights a fire inside of him that he has never felt before. And despite all of her attempts to push him away, he refuses to give up because that spark means something to him. And in the end, Brody helps Journey heal and she helps him feel alive again.

I did feel like the ending was rushed, however. I am a big fan of Shari Ryan’s, and I guess I was hoping for more. That also plays into the epilogue that I felt wasn’t as complete as I would have liked it. But now that i know we will see these two stories from the POV of the Pearson brothers, I’m okay with biding my time until I get what I want!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Big Pickle, by JJ Knight

Big Pickle
JJ Knight
Publication date: April 4th 2020
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Romance

He’s kind of a big dill.

An enemies-to-lovers, secret boss, gut-splittingly hilarious rom com from USA Today bestselling author JJ Knight

They call me Big Pickle.

It’s not what you think.

(Although that’s true too.)

I happen to be the oldest Pickle in the family deli business. And we have the best salami.

Take that one however you like.

But when my father announces the franchise will go to the most profitable of the three brothers, I learn that even though I’m the biggest Pickle, I’m dead last.

I hightail it to Texas to see what’s happened to my restaurant, only to find a sassy little spitfire named Nova Strong in charge.

She’s amazing. She’s sexy. She’s perfectly happy to call bullsh*t when she sees it.

But despite the way we nearly melt the permafrost in the industrial freezer, I have to control myself. Nova thinks I’m a new employee. She has no idea I’m only there to spy.

Or that I’m her boss.

As I get to the bottom of why my franchise is failing, I desperately need to know one thing:

Is Nova Strong everything wrong with my deli, or everything right for me?

___

Big Pickle is a full-length, 300-page standalone romantic comedy full of pickle jokes, giggle-worthy references to male anatomy, and more salty language than a jar of baby dills.

Goodreads / Amazon

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh my goodness, this book is funny! As you might expect, it constantly plays on the word “pickle” and the results are hilarious. I want some Dill Dough Bread!

So deli owner Jace is in a competition with his brothers to take over the family deli dynasty, and must turn around the suffering location he owns in Austin. Jace is a New York playboy, who barely does anything with his store. So he’s shocked to find out how deep in the hold he is. He’s immediately smitten with acting manager Nova, who of course thinks he’s an arrogant ass and wants nothing to do with him.

But when Jace gets himself hired at his own deli (under his real name, Jason), he and Nova not only solve the mystery of who is skimming funds, but find that they are pretty perfect for one another. But when she discovers who he really is, can she forgive his lie of omission?

I loved the premise of this story, and it’s executed so well. Jace’s struggle with wanting to tell Nova but not wanting to lose what they had felt very real. Her devastation over his deception felt very real. It was an excellent merger of the fears they both had, with plenty of steam and lots of funny dialogue mixed in.

This was a dill-ite to read! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: A Cinderella Story, by E.K. Woodcock

Title: A Cinderella Story
Author: E.K. Woodcock
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: April 3, 2020
Cover Design: Callie Rae at Literary Designs

“See a lost shoe, pick it up. Prince Charming, you will find.”Skylar O’Conner is many things: a cat lover, a flirt, a currently unemployed dreamer. One thing she’s not is a believer in magic or mysticism of any kind. When her mother gifts her a psychic reading on her 26th birthday, Skylar’s jaded outlook has her bored before she even steps inside. What she was not prepared for, was her own curiosity to act on the psychic’s advice when she finds an abandoned purple rainboot at the mall.

Since his wife died two years ago, Carter Montgomery’s entire world has centered around his daughter, Everly. He raises her to know her mother is a constant loving presence watching over them, one he’s not sure he’ll ever be able to move on from. But when a blonde with curly hair and emerald eyes waltzes into his life, she awakens yearnings within him he thought no longer existed.

Neither Skylar or Carter were prepared for what fate had in store for them, yet their attraction was undeniable. But when a simple gift causes a horrible misunderstanding, Carter pulls back out of fear the scars on his heart still cut too deep. Will pain from the past deny them the chance at a beautiful future?

“A Cinderella Story is E.K. Woodcock’s debut novel and she did an amazing job! This is a sweet retelling of the classic Cinderella that includes a hot single dad and an adorable three-year-old.” ~Rubi’s Bookshelf

“… a beautiful and unforgettable journey of the unexpected, love, moving on and family.” ~K & R’s Dark Angels Book Blog

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

A Cinderella Story is a great debut novel from E.K. Woodcock. A modern-day twist on the Cinderella fairy tale, Skylar never imagines that a vision from a psychic would lead her to a single dad, a single rainboot and an adorable little girl.

After the “Cinderella moment” in the mall where Skylar returns Everly’s rainboot, she keeps running into widower Carter over and over again. There are a lot of really cute moments between Skylar and Everly, and the romance between Skylar and Carter is quite sweet. There’s a twist in the story, of course, and a lovely HEA for Skylar, Carter and Everly. If you are looking for a feel-good, clean romance, definitely check out A Cinderella Story!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I fell in love with Nico in Sleeper, so I was very excited to see him get his own story!

Singer/songwriter Nico Todd has a rep for being a ladies’ man, but from the moment he saw sweet waitress Kat serving coffee in his favorite late-night diner, he was smitten. She’s brushed him off for months, despite feeling a flicker herself whenever she’s around Nico. But as a single mom, Kat knows that her lifestyle and Nico’s lifestyle would just not gel.

But when Nico learns that Kat is a gifted photographer, he offers her a job documenting his upcoming music tour, and takes her son and mother along for the ride. And as it turns out, little Tate is just as charming as Nico! Although Kat tries to keep things completely professional between them when they are on the road, that plan quickly goes by the wayside. They get to know each other well in their close quarters, and Nico not only wins over Kat, but Tate and her mom as well.

Charmer is an absolutely charming story. I love the way Nico breaks down Kat’s walls, and she makes him want the life and family that he never thought he wanted before. He totally steps up as a dad for Tate and their relationship is heartwarming. (And the kid has jokes! I kept telling them to my 10 year old and he loved them!)

This is another great book from Kayley Loring! Low on angst, big on all the feels, this is a perfect love story to get lost in! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Before writing steamy romantic comedy novels, Kayley Loring got a BFA in creative writing from a Canadian university and had a fifteen-year career as a screenwriter in Los Angeles (under a different name). She mostly wrote PG-13 family comedies that studios would pay her lots of money for and then never make into movies. In 2017 she decided to move to the Pacific Northwest and write about all the fun stuff that she wasn’t allowed to write about in those PG-13 scripts. Now she’s breathing cleaner air and writing dirtier words. It’s an adjustment she’s happily getting used to.

Excerpt:

“Who are you?” I don’t like calling her the woman. I’ve wondered her name for months since she started appearing in that doorway so close to mine.

She turns to me and in her arms is the baby. She’s holding a bottle and the baby is drinking. Quiet little sounds come from it and she grins down at the baby in her arms before tilting her head at me.

“What?”

“You. What is your name?”

“Paisley. Are you Mikah?”

She must want money if she knows my name. Perhaps she’s a fan. A puck bunny—that’s what my teammates call the girls who follow players and only want one thing from them.

“How did you know?” I wish she wasn’t so pretty. Sometimes it hurts to talk when all I want to do is look at her.

She points to an envelope on the table. The note.

“It’s on the outside. I didn’t know if it was your name or the baby’s, so I took a guess. Are you… are you okay?”

“A stranger shows up at my door with a baby in her arms, saying it’s mine. How okay am I supposed to be?” I wander to the table while I ask.

I’m surprised by her gentle laugh.

“I suppose this isn’t your typical Friday night.”

She is funny. If I didn’t think I might throw up, I might laugh. No. This is not my typical Friday night. Mine are for resting. Not life-changing drama.

I say nothing and grab the envelope. I stare at it for a moment. Perhaps if I do not open it, I can pretend this didn’t happen. My fingers shake as I tear it open.

The envelope is larger than normal and thick and I’m careful as I pull out several folded papers.

The top one is the most important though as I instantly see my name, written in scrolling black ink.

MIKAH,

His name is Angelo.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Scoring Off The Ice is a cute, albeit predictable, neighbors romance.

Mikah is a young, fairly innocent hockey player, completely focused on the game and his career. His life gets thrown into a tailspin when a baby is left on his doorstep one night, the result of a weekend fling when he lost his V-card. The help from his cute neighbor, Paisley, is the only thing that helps Mikah get through the blur his life becomes as single dad to Angelo. (Gotta love it — Mikah and Angelo!)

These characters were really cute together. I love how innocent Mikah is in some ways as a result of the language barrier. And he’s brutally honest with Paisley, partly because of his personality and the language barrier, and partly because he’s so insecure about things and that’s his way of showing confidence.

I love that Paisely has no idea who Mikah is at first. She just knew there was a cute guy who lived across the hall. And even once she finds out that Mikah is a pro athlete, she doesn’t want to know anything more about him than what he tells her himself. There is something so refreshing about that, and their relationship progresses nicely, even if it is a bit different as they parent Angelo together.

Naturally, there is a bit of drama when Angelo’s mom unexpectedly shows back up in the picture, and it leads to some relationship drama between Mikah and Paisley. But there is most definitely a sweet ending for this little family!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Southern Storms, an all-new, small town second chance romance from Brittainy C. Cherry, is available now!

All I wanted to do was run away, I never expected to crash into his arms…

After leaving the city life behind to escape my loveless marriage, I moved to small town Havenbarrow for a fresh start.

What I didn’t expect was to find myself drawn to the town’s black sheep.

They called him troubled. Cold. A man with a dark past.

What everyone seemed to miss about Jax was the splashes of light in his eyes. The random acts of kindness he performed when no one was watching. The way he made me smile and laugh.

Jax helped unpack the baggage I’d been carrying around with me. He was patient with my pain and gentle with my scars. He was the stillness during my hurricane.

Yet when both of our pasts come back to haunt our present days, we realized quickly that sometimes love stories didn’t end the way we’d hoped.

Sometimes you were left with only the damage from the storm.

Excerpt

Kennedy

Joy Jones was quite the character to take in. That morning, when the sun came up, she walked outside to her front porch and sat down in her rocking chair with a smile on her face and a large cup of coffee. A few of my nosy visitors told me that it was a daily routine for her.

Her silver-dripped hair was tossed up in a messy bun being held together with two knitting needles, and her thick-framed, vibrant-orange glasses sat on top of her head. She wore a vibrant bow in her hair that matched her dress for the day, and she always greeted everyone who passed by her house, even when they didn’t speak back to her. Everyone in town called her Crazy Joy, even though she was the kindest person. Her only odd quirk was that she never left her property.

I wondered how she managed, though. I wondered how she kept living without stepping foot outside of her home. It seemed she hadn’t any children and she didn’t have a caregiver who came to aid her, from what I could tell.

Later that morning, my questions were answered as a blue pick-up truck pulled in front of the house. Needless to say, my jaw dropped to the ground when I saw Mr. Personality step out of the vehicle. He walked his way straight toward Joy’s front porch with his arms filled with grocery bags.

He proceeded to greet Joy. She stood from the rocking chair as he set the bags down on the porch. Then, he hugged her.

He hugged her!

I wouldn’t have thought someone as grumpy as Mr. Personality had the ability to hug someone. The two of them walked inside to put the groceries away, leaving me completely baffled and unable to return to my scheduled reading. It took a lot to break me away from a book. And by ‘a lot,’ I meant a lot. My house could’ve been on fire, aliens could’ve beamed me up, and I would’ve still been trying to get in that one last page. When my own love story was broken, I turned to story books to heal the cracks of my broken heartbeats. When my world fell apart, the story books still believed in happily ever afters. Those books saved me on the days I felt my soul falling victim to the hardest of storms.

Yet, Mr. Personality pulled me away from the words against the page. He made me curious about him walking into Joy’s house. Watching him chat away with her had my mind racing. A few minutes later, when the two of them walked back outside with two glasses in their hands—one with wine, the other with some dark liquor—whiskey, I assumed—I couldn’t stop myself from glancing over to them. Joy kept talking, and Mr. Personality kept responding. Even though I couldn’t hear what they were saying, Joy looked beyond smitten with whatever was being said her way, which forced my own heart to skip a few beats.

Well, I’ll be damned.

The town’s asshole made me swoon.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

This beautiful, beautiful book!

I love a grumpy hero, and Jax is certainly one of them. He’s such a tortured soul, broody and moody and everything that makes me want him to find a reason to smile.

That reason ends up being newcomer Kennedy. At first, they don’t realize that they knew each other as kids at summer camp, but even after Jax pieces together that the weird newcomer is his Sun. Kennedy is equally surprised that Mr. Personality is her first crush, Moon. Both of them are incredibly damaged, hurt by the demons of their pasts. Together, they find a solace in the other that they are both so desperate for, and help one another weather the storms of their lives.

Brittainy Cherry is a master at telling an angsty romance. Southern Storms is very reminiscent of the books from her Elements series, and a wonderful story that I will come back to read again!

I received and advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

This book was all kinds of angsty! And the blurb doesn’t quite set up what this story is about at all. It’s full of heartache and drama, and a love triangle that kept me guessing until the end. (No cheating, though.) I knew who I wanted Piper to end up with, and that had my stomach in knots for a good chunk of the book.

Piper was always in love with her childhood best friend, Danny. Even though he was in love with someone else. When Danny tragically dies, he leaves custody of his daughter to Piper. And while Piper loves Ainsley to pieces, the fact that the kindergartener has been selectively mute ever since her dad dies is added stress. Piper works off some of that stress with her broody roommate Easton, but will things ever be more than friends with benefits?

Then there’s Carter, one of her older brother’s best friends who was also friends with Danny. Carter knows all about Piper’s childhood and how she was in love with Danny. He is comfortable and a reminder of all that she’s known, but also a reminder of all that she’s lost. In the end, will Piper move forward with a new life or make something out of the memories of her past?

This story is beautifully written. Piper is drowning in so many emotions. And once she makes her choice, everything is crystal clear in her mind. It ends on a wonderful HEA — and even a glimpse at a story I really hope happens between Ainsley and Milo!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: A Royal Mistake, by Piper Rayne

He’s not your average Joe from the corner bar.

He’s the heir to the crown.

I should know, I’ve followed him for years.

Not in a stalkerish way.

Magazines and online gossip blogs are fair game when you’re royalty.

But I do know every detail about him, down to the brand of boxer briefs he wears.

All my studying of the man who plays a starring role in my dreams pays off when I win a dinner with him.

As if that wasn’t enough, he barters a deal with me that has him moving into my spare guest room.

I forgot that fairytales don’t exist though because just as I’m about to get everything I want, including the prince, I find out there’s someone in Prince Adrian Marx’s life I don’t know — his fiancee.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

A Royal Mistake is book #2 in The Rooftop Crew series. It is a standalone with recurring characters, but this series is turning out to be so fun, so you should definitely read them all.

I really didn’t like Sierra much in My Bestie’s Ex. I thought she was kind of harsh towards Blanca and Ethan, but I got to see a different side of her in A Royal Mistake. She’s been hurting so much as a result of her mom’s death, and never felt like she was worth enough to stick around as a result of her dad’s depression. She’s closed off when it comes to love and always has one foot out the door so she can protect her heart.

So of course, the guy who makes Sierra feel all gooey inside is a legit prince, who has an arranged marriage waiting for him after his two months of “freedom” in America. I love everything about Adrian and Sierra. I love the way they make each other laugh, I love how even though she was a royal stalker, she could care less that he’s a prince once she gets to know him. I love how adaptable Adrian is to living as a commoner and befriends the rooftop crew.

Of course, what he’s running from finds him in New York, and both Adrian and Sierra have to face their insecurities and demons. Will they find a way to make it work?

This series is so much fun. I love this crew of friends and can’t wait for the rest of the books! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

They’re our bullies.
They’re the class of 2020.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I love the idea behind this box set, that the proceeds go to the charity Ditch The Label!

I reviewed Like You Care, by Kaydence Snow. It’s the first book I’ve read by her, and I was hooked. This is a novella that will be an expanded book in early May…. and I need it now!

I wouldn’t say that it’s a love story between the bully and victim, though. Mena is certainly bullied by the kids at school because of the port-wine stain that covers her face. And newcomer Turner is on the periphery of that popular crowd, but not exactly one of her tormentors. He has no idea that the girl next door he’s shared some in-the-dark kisses with is the same Phil picked on relentlessly by the kids at school.

I love that Turner has some secrets Of his own. What’s the deal with his dad? The cliffhanger happens just as Mena is exposed to Turner, and I need the rest of the story now! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Best Man, by Winter Renshaw

I didn’t know her name, but I heard her laugh, tasted her lips, felt her warm skin as I held her in my arms. Together we watched our young children playing in the sand, the warm ocean lapping the shore behind them as the setting sun painted the sky. She was my soulmate and this was our life, our beautiful forever …
Then I woke up—alone in a hospital room, connected to wires and machines.
There was no wife. No kids. Not a single soul waiting for me. That life I dreamt of … never existed.
I’d been in a devastating wreck, a nurse told me when she rushed in. Comatose for weeks. I’d have a long road to recovery, but I was going to make it.
From that moment on, the dream haunted me. I saw that woman’s face every time I closed my eyes, searched for her in every crowd, ached to be with a stranger I felt I’d known my entire life … and I swore that if I ever found her, I’d do anything to make her mine.
Anything.
Then I found her.
And it was both the best and worst day of my life because the woman of my dreams … was about to marry my best friend.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: No cheating, no love triangles. That’s all I’m going to say … 😉

Cainan

Beep … beep … beep … beep …

I wake to a steady sound, slamming into an unfamiliar shell of a body, which as it turns out is mine. A dreamlike haze envelopes me, and when my surroundings come into focus, I’m met with white walls, white blankets, white machines connected to white wires leading to a strip of white tape on my wrist holding an IV in place.

I’m in a hospital.

I try to remember how I got here, but it’s like trying to recall someone else’s dream—an impossible task. And it only makes the throbbing inside my head intensify.

“My wife …” My words are more air than sound, and it’s painful to speak with a bone-dry mouth and burning throat.

“Mr. James?” A woman with hair the color of driven snow leans over me. So much fucking white. “Don’t move. Please.”

She’s a calm kind of rushed, hurried but not frenetic as she makes her way around the room, pressing buttons, paging for assistance and adjusting machine settings.

The room fades in and out, murky gray to pitch black, and then crystal clear before disappearing completely. The next time I open my eyes, I’m fenced by three more women and one white-coat-wearing man, all of them gazing down on me with squinted, skeptical expressions, as if they’re witnessing a verifiable miracle in the making.

I’m certain this is nothing more than a bad dream—until my head pulsates with an iron-clad throb once again, accented by a searing poker-hot pain too real to be a delusion.

“Mr. James, I’m Dr. Shapiro. Four weeks ago, you were involved in a car accident.” The doctor at the foot of the bed studies me. “You’re at Hoboken University Medical Center, and you’re in excellent hands.”

They all study me.

I try to sit up, only for a nurse to place her hand on my shoulder. “Take it easy, Mr. James.”

Another nurse hands me water. I take a sip. The clear, cold liquid that glides down my throat both soothes and stings. I swallow the razor-blade sensation and try to sit up again, but my arms shake in protest, muscles threatening to give out.

“Where’s my wife?” Each word is excruciating, physically and otherwise.

She should be here.

Why isn’t she here?

“Your wife?” The nurse with the water cup repeats my question as she exchanges glances with the dark-haired nurse on the opposite side of my bed. “Mr. James … you don’t have a wife.”

I try to respond, which only causes me to cough. I’m handed the water once more, and when I get the coughing under control, I ask for my wife once more.

“Has anyone called her?” I hand the cup back. If I’ve been out of it for weeks, I imagine she’s beside herself. And our kids. I can’t begin to imagine what they’ve been going through. “Does she know I’m awake? Have my children seen me like this?”

“Sir …” The nurse with the dark hair frowns.

“My wife,” I say, harder this time.

“Mr. James.” Dr. Shapiro comes closer, and a nurse steps out of the way. “You suffered extensive injuries in your accident …”

The man rambles on, but I only catch fragments of what he’s saying. Shattered pelvis. Spleen removal. Internal bleeding. Brain swelling. Medically-induced coma.

“It’s not uncommon to be confused or disoriented upon awaking,” he says.

But she was just here …

She was just with me …

Only we weren’t in this room, we were at the beach—the little strip of sand beyond our summer home. She was in my arms as we lay warm under a hot sun, watching our children run from the rolling waves that rolled over the coastline, leaving tiny footprints up and down the shore.

A boy and a girl.

My wife smelled of sunscreen, and she wore an oversized straw hat with a black ribbon and thick-framed cat-eye sunglasses with red rims that matched her red sarong. I can picture it clearer than anything in this damn room.

I can hear her laugh, bubbly and contagious.

If I close my eyes, I can see her heart-shaped smile—the one that takes up half her face and can turn the worst of days completely upside down.

“We’re going to let you rest, Mr. James, and then we’ll order a few tests.” The doctor digs in a deep pocket of his jacket, and then he sneaks a glance at his phone. “I’ll be here for the next eight hours, if you have any additional questions. The nurses will ensure you’re comfortable in the meantime. We’ll discuss your treatment plan as soon as you’re feeling up to it.”

He tells the nurse with the dark hair to order a CT scan, mumbles something else I can’t discern, and then he’s gone. A moment later, the room clears save for myself and the third nurse—the one who’s done nothing but stare at me with despondent eyes this entire time.

“There must be a mistake. Someone needs to call my wife immediately.” I try to sit up, but an electric intensity unlike anything I’ve ever experienced shoots up my arm and settles along my back and shoulders.

The thought of her not knowing where I am sends a squeeze to my chest. What if she thinks I left her? What if she thinks I disappeared? What if she has no idea what happened? And what was I doing in Hoboken when our life is in Manhattan?

“What’s her name?” Her question comes soft and low, almost like she’s trying to ensure no one hears her. “Your wife?”

I open my mouth to speak … only nothing comes out.

I can picture her as vivid as still blue waters on a windless day—but it’s the strangest thing because her name escapes me.

Nothing but blank after infuriating blank.

“I … I can’t remember.” I lean back, staring into the reflective void of a black TV screen on the opposite wall.

The nurse’s gaze grows sadder, if that’s possible. “It’s okay. You’ve been through quite an ordeal.”

She doesn’t believe me.

“Would you like me to call your sister?” she asks.

My sister … Claire.

If I can remember my sister’s name, why can’t I remember my own wife’s?

“Yes,” I say. “Call Claire. Immediately.”

She’ll be able to sort this out, I’m sure of it.

“Would you like me to adjust your bed?” The nurse straightens the covers over my legs. “I’m Miranda, by the way. I’ve been assigned to you since you arrived. I can tell you just about anything you need to know.”

“Just … call my sister.”

“Of course, Mr. James. Can I grab you anything while I make that call?”

I lift my hand—the one without the IV—to my forehead. “Head’s pounding like a goddamned jackhammer. Got anything for that?”

“Absolutely. Be right back …”

Miranda hurries out the door, and I’m alone.

If I close my eyes, the room spins, but I can picture my wife with impeccable lucidity—the square line of her jaw, her heart-shaped lips that flip up in the corners, the candy-apple green of her eyes.

My heart aches, though it isn’t a physical pain, it’s deeper.

More profound.

Like the drowning of a human soul.

I remind myself that the doctor’s said it’s normal to be disoriented, and I promise myself everything will come back to me once I get my bearings.

The clock on the wall reads eight minutes past seven. The sky beyond the windows is half-lit. I haven’t the slightest clue if it’s AM or PM. I couldn’t tell you what day it is or what month it is for that matter.

“Mr. James, your sister is on her way,” the nurse says when she returns.

She hands me a white paper cup with two white pills.

So much fucking white.

If I never see white again after this, I’ll die a happy man.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh my goodness!! This book! Talk about a slow burn! My heart broke for Cainan. He so clearly knew in his heart what his future held, and was devastated to learn that the literal woman of his dreams was his best friend’s fiancée!

So much of this book is Cainan and Brie on their individual journeys. He’s struggling to come to terms with who he was before his coma, and trying to figure out who the woman he dreamed about was. She’s stuck in a relationship that she’s not really sure she wants to be in. And if she does end things with Grant, is it wrong for her to start something with Cainan?

The tension and want between these two jumps off the page. And Cainan is so loyal to his friend, my heart broke for him every time he was with Brie.

Destiny, fate, karma, being at the right place at the right time, kismet… The Beat Man was a wonderful story and one that I will definitely be returning to again!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
