SYNOPSIS

Life isn’t a game.

Life isn’t an empty bottle of bourbon spinning on a warehouse floor as I hold my breath.

I feel weak when others perceive me as strong.

I’m passionate though I appear to hate the world around me.

I see beauty in all ugly things.

I feel pain when I laugh.

No one knows the truth.

Well, no one knew the truth until now.

Somehow, Brody Pearson understands more about me than anyone else in my life. The severed connection should mean something significant, but I don’t know if I can forget all my self-proclaimed promises.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I was so happy to read Journey and Brody’s story! A stand-alone in the Barrel House Series, this book overlaps the end of Bourbon Love Notes, and is the story of Melody’s sister and Brett’s brother.

Bourbon On The Rocks was much more intense than Bourbon Love Notes. Journey is all kinds of messed up emotionally. She’s had some serious repercussions to live with after some mistakes she made when she was younger, and those choices still effect her even as a grown woman who is almost 30. She’s also suffering from an eating disorder, which was an undertone of this story and a subplot that I thought was handled well.

I wouldn’t call this a traditional second-chance romance, but Journey and Brody, but the kiss they shares one New Years Eve a decade ago set her on the path of destruction and devastation that she’s been trying to work her way out of ever since. It all unfolds in flashbacks, and there are some brilliant twists to Journey’s story.

Brody, meanwhile, is just kind of stuttering through his life after his divorce, trying to raise a tween daughter. Journey lights a fire inside of him that he has never felt before. And despite all of her attempts to push him away, he refuses to give up because that spark means something to him. And in the end, Brody helps Journey heal and she helps him feel alive again.

I did feel like the ending was rushed, however. I am a big fan of Shari Ryan’s, and I guess I was hoping for more. That also plays into the epilogue that I felt wasn’t as complete as I would have liked it. But now that i know we will see these two stories from the POV of the Pearson brothers, I’m okay with biding my time until I get what I want!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
