Review: How You Get The Girl, by Jessica Florence

SBPRBanner-HowYouGetTheGirl-BT.jpg

How You Get The Girl was such a cute, funny, clever story! I did not read the first book in this Theme Songs series, so the whole speaking-in-song-titles was new for me and I absolutely loved that! How clever!

Joel is one of the hottest movie stars on the planet, and Alessandra is his fiesty spitfire of a makeup artist on his new movie set. There’s an immediate attraction between them, but Alessandra has been down the dating road with an actor before, and has every intention of steering clear of Joel. Especially since she has a teenage son to consider. But Joel is more than just physically attracted to her. There is something about Alessandra that he cannot shake. He feels it deep in his bones that they are meant to be together, like and epic movie couple. So how does he go about getting the girl? Forget about being the Hollywood Star; he’s just going to be his real self.

cover.jpg

And Joel’s true self is an absolutely adorable, charming, devoted man. Alessandra has been throught a lot as a single mom, and is a strong person as a result, and that’s exactly why Joel wants to take care of her. The banter between the characters is witty and funny, the pacing of the book was exactly right, and I thought that the way he teenage son is incorporated into the storyline was perfect.

As Hollywood’s hottest actor, getting a woman in my bed is never a challenge.

Then I spotted her at a bar—she wanted a man for the night, and I jumped at the chance to fill the role. I gave her Joel Kline’s best, and she smacked my pretty face.

But don’t worry, that’s not the end of our story. Her brand of crazy inspired me, and I had to see her again, no matter the cost.

Now, Alessandra Rose is my lead makeup artist for the next four months.

Literally, her job is to touch me every day for the duration of filming. Sounds like a win, right?

Nope, she stops me at every hint of a flirt. I’m in uncharted waters for once.

Joel Kline’s famous techniques to get the girl are failing me. It’s no longer about those sexy Brazilian lips, or her fiery spirit that gives me a hard-on.

It’s about making her banana pancakes after she spends the night in my home.

It’s about knocking down those walls around her, claiming her as mine.

She’s going to fight me, of course, unwilling to accept that it’s not all an act.

But I’m not going anywhere; that’s how you get the girl.

Review: Step Boss, by Ash Harlow

34881257.jpg

Step Boss covers all sorts of tropes, like Stepbrother, boss, Alpha male, workplace romance, billionaire romance, anonymous hookup. And even a bit of BDSM!

My favorite kind of stepbrother romances are when the couple randomly hooks up, having nothing to do with their parents. Which is how Carley and Marcus meet four months earlier in the prologue. Then we get to that AWESOME scene where Carley is describing to her co-workers the stepbrother she hasn’t actually yet met, but is telling the other women how awful Marcus is. And of course, he walks up behind her! They immediately recognize each other from their anonymous sex next to a tree at a bonfire party. And while Carley immediately realizes that this hunk in a suit has to be Marcus, he is still completely in the dark as to which one of the cackling hens gathered together is new personal assistant, Carley, until she enters his office later that morning. Brilliant!

The chemistry between the characters is sizzling. Their desire to be with one another is hot and torrid, which is just what I want from a stepbrother romance. The boss/subordinate relationship between Marcus and Carley also crosses over into a Dom/sub relationship when he lets his kink out.

Step Boss is fun and engaging, steamy and sexy. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Review: Morrow’s Horion, by Sierra Kummings

SBPRBanner-MorrowsHorizon-BT.jpg

This book is long — like 50 chapters long — and I found myself skipping over parts. I felt that there were a lot of extraneous characters and scenes that didn’t really *need* to be in there, and that felt distracting to me as I was reading. And I also felt that there was an overuse of Spanish words, both from Jacob’s mouth and in his inner dialog.

MH-IGpromo-Jacob8A.jpg

That said, this is still a solid romance between a former soldier suffering from PTSD and with trust issues and one of the employees who works in his family’s chain of banks. Jacob and Sara meet by chance, however, not through work, and there is an immediate attraction. But there is one misunderstanding after another between these two as they try to form a real relationship. Jacob has reasons to not want to trust Sara (his ex) and reasons for not wanting to fully commit (his nightmares from his PTSD), but he eventually comes to the realization that he can’t live without Sara.

Review: Royal Affair, by Marquita Valentine

SBPRBanner-RoyalAffair-BT.jpg

I’m going to go with 3.5 stars on this one. Royal Affair was a decent follow-up to Royal Scandal, which I do think you need to read first. Royal Affair is the story of Princess Charlotte and rag journalist Brooks Walker, the reporter who exposed the Sinclaire siblings in Colin’s book, Scandal. Affair is set several years later, and there are a lot of glossed-over plot points that are not explained, but having read Scandal, I knew the background.
I was very interested to see how a no-strings affair between Charlotte and Brooks would work. How could she trust him after what he did to her family? And for Brooks, it was interesting to see him wrestle between keeping he promise he made to Charlotte to keep anything she says to him during their intimate moments private and not use the information for print.

blogtour.jpg

Along the way, the two of course fall in love. But of course there are reasons why the royal wallflower can’t just run off and get married, as much as she wants to be free from her royal chains.

But overall, I just didn’t fall for Brooks and Charlotte as a couple the way I did for Colin and Della. The reader does see a change for the better in Brooks after he gets involved with Charlotte, and in turn his influence on her life allows her to take the opportunity to climb out of her tower when one is presented to her by her siblings. There is a HEA to their tale, and it’s one that I think works well in meshing who they each are and where they were coming from.

Review: All I Want Is You, by Candace Havens

SBPRBanner-AllIWantIsYou-BT.jpg

Short, cute story with a HEA between a ballerina and a biker. And Hawke is quite wealthy, and doesn’t want to get married because he sees his dad’s go through wives like candy, so there’s the rich guy trope. And, Amy is his new stepsister. And she’s in a bit of a financial jam. Since Hawke needs to marry in order to get the controlling shares of the family company, he suggests they get married for both their benefits.

5.png

There are a whole lot of tropes in this story, and for the most part, they all work. I just couldn’t connect enough with Hawke and Amy to really feel invested in them finally realizing they were in love.

The plot is good, the pace is steady, I just couldn’t connect with the characters, which is why I’m only ranking this 3 stars.

Review: Provocative, by Lisa Renee Jones

Available Now.jpg

Provocative was quite the perfect title for this book. It’s full of provocative moments between Faith and Nick, and not just in the bedroom. Nick seeks out Faith to prove that she was responsible for his father’s death (and possibly even her own mother’s), but he doesn’t expect to fall for her the way that he does. The characters have an intense connection, and there are so many secrets being kept on both of their parts. As far as romantic suspense stories go, this is right up there on the top of the list!

Done_available.jpg

This book is the first in a duet, so it does end on a cliffhanger. Thankfully, the sequel, Shameless, will be out in just a few short months and we can find out how Nick and Faith’s tale will end!

Review: The Gravity Of Us, Brittainy C. Cherry

SBPRBanner-TGOU-BT.jpg

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. Every installment in Cherry’s Elements series has been nothing short of spectacular, and The Gravity Of Us is another book I am keeping on my re-read list.

These characters, Graham and Lucy, are so opposite in every way. He is a broken shell of a man who refuses to let himself feel any kind of emotion. She is an effervescent free-spirit who feels EVERYTHING. Lucy is respectful and kind, where Graham is cantankerous and rude. But underneath that hard, cold, unfeeling mask is a hurt, heartbroken, scared man, who surprises himself when he suddenly begins to feel and laugh and (gasp!) love around Lucy. Lucy, the woman who he should never be with.

SBPR-BCC-TGOU-Teaser3.png

Their relationship starts out as a tenuous friendship. Well, not even that because Graham doesn’t want to be Lucy’s friend. He just needs her help. And even asking for help takes a lot out of this man. But over time, these two characters develop a bond so rich and strong and so heartfelt.

“Being around you does something strange to me, something that hasn’t happened in such a long time.”
“What happens?”
He took my hand in his then led it to his chest, and his next words came out as a whisper. “My heart begins to beat again.”

But then, their forbidden relationship is shattered to pieces before it can even begin.

“She was the one thing off-limits, and the only thing I’d ever craved.

Thankfully, this story has a HEA. The road is long and painful for Graham and Lucy, but they get their forever. Because as Graham says in one of his chapters at the end, “she was always meant to be my last word.”

It’s touching, it’s heartwarming. But it’s not just the relationship between Lucy and her Graham Cracker that touched me. It’s the relationships that Lucy has with her sisters as well, and how each of them finally find the peace that they need contributes to Graham getting back the light in his life. I was up into the wee hours of the morning to finish this story because I could not put it down. And the lack of sleep was so worth it.

Blurb:

Nate
Being a substitute teacher is good for me.
It’s sensible.
Logical.
Abandoning my plans for a career in the film industry and a life full of fun, albeit slightly reckless, actions was the responsible thing to do.
That’s who I am now.
That’s who I’ve become.
Mr. Boring. Mr. Predictable. Mr. Anal Retentive.
At least that’s what I thought until one irresistible student breathes life back into the version of me I’ve been desperately trying to suffocate.
Being with Ainsley isn’t a want. It’s a need.
And I’m willing do anything to fulfill it.

Ainsley
I’ve spent my entire life ashamed of who I am.
Who my mother is. What she does.
Being forced to attend a private school where people endlessly whisper about it is only bearable because I know exactly what’s in my future.
I know exactly where I’m going.
I know exactly what to do to get there.
Or at least I thought I did.
One class with him and suddenly my entire world was missing one very important piece.
Being with Nate isn’t just about sex.
It’s about loving life in a way I never imagined.
The situation isn’t ideal, but I’ll do whatever it takes to be with him.

Cute, if not predictable, fake-relationship romance. Confirmed bachelor Max is tired of his well-meaning mother wanting to set him up. So imagine his surprise when he learns that the client he’s been lusting after for months, Hailey, has been telling people that she’s engaged to him. As a professional matchmaker with a losing streak of relationships behind her, Hailey felt that pretending to be engaged was the only way to safeguard her business.

So when Max proposes an engaged-but-dating relationship, he’s determined to show Hailey that she’s worth more than what she’s experienced in the last. And before long the fake engagement turns into so much more.
