Sunny Shelly’s Review: Hawk, by Kat Savage

Release Date: February 23
What’s in this story?
> A Bad Boy Tattoo Shop Owner
> A Strong Single Mom
> Deliciously Hot Steam
> All The Swoon
> Heart Melting Moments

Hawk Tanner is not a man of many words—especially if you’re a silly girl getting a silly tattoo in his shop. The owner of Bird’s Eye Tattoo Studio doesn’t want you to tip him with your phone number or flirty glances. He’s tired of all the wrong women wanting him for all the wrong reasons.

Drew Ashby has no time—for anything. As a recently-divorced single mother, her focus is on finding a job, caring for her daughter, and rebuilding some semblance of a life after hers was wrecked.

When Drew lands a job at Bird’s Eye, sparks don’t immediately fly. She can’t deny the fact that her boss is a delicious specimen of a man. His tattoo-covered skin might even drive her wild, but his brooding presence and set jaw make him hard to read.

That is, until he drops the bad boy persona and starts making moves on her—kind and caring gestures she doesn’t expect.

Things turn hot, and just when Drew thinks everything is finally going right, life does what it does best: It throws her a curveball from her past.

Bird’s Eye might not be the family Drew envisioned for herself, but ideals can change in a heartbeat. There’s no doubt Hawk is the man she wants, but can he step up and be the man she needs?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Hawk is the first book I’ve read by Kat Savage and I am here for this series! I adored this grumpy, tattooed beast of a man and the single mom and little girl who stole his heart.

Single mom Drew is starting over after her divorce in a new city when she takes a job as a receptionist at a tattoo shop. She never expects that the grumpy, tattooed Jesus who owns the place would be her soulmate. Once Hawk lets Drew in, he becomes a big old softy where she and her daughter Ava are concerned. And Hawk proves to be a better father to Ava and partner to Drew than her slimy lawyer ex ever was.

My only complaint is that I felt like I wanted more as far as Hawk’s reasons for being grumpy/cold hearted. He’s been used in the past, I get it, but I wish there was more time spent with his backstory. And Drew… I loved everything about her finding a family in the ragtag crew at Bird’s Eye. I binged this book in a day, totally shipping psycho and his straightjacket!

I cannot wait for the rest of this series!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Meet Kat Savage

Kat Savage resides in Louisville, Kentucky with her three beautiful children, her hunky spouse, and two spoiled dogs. She secretly has hope of getting chickens one day.

By day, she’s an office manager, pushing paperwork and daydreaming. When she’s not at her nine-to-five, she’s writing. Or thinking about writing. Or preparing books and book stuff. Or quite possibly, designing stuff for other people’s books.

She was driven to writing out of a need to distraction and self-preservation after the death of her sister in 2013. Since then, it’s snowballed into a full blown passion she can’t escape. Even on the toughest days, she wouldn’t want to.

She writes poetry packed with real, raw, and sometimes ugly truths. She won’t lie. Her goal is to make you ache, in that perfect delicious way we often secretly crave.

Shortly after putting her poetry and prose out into the world, she turned to novel writing. Savage is a natural storyteller, getting better with each book. She tries to give the characters in her novels depth, whether they’re serious or comical, she builds them in layers with the hope that you see a little of yourself in some of them.

Excerpt:
“Are you a doctor?” she counters, but she lets me inspect her injury.

“I’m the doctor in the room,” I tease.

I ask where it hurts, and she points to her wrist, frowning. I run a thumb gently along that tender spot, that tantalizing place that can drive a woman wild.

If you touch her just right.

Which it seems I am doing, since Scarlett’s breath hitches.

“Daniel,” she whispers, her voice perhaps betraying her. “I’m fine. I swear I’m fine.”

I tuck my finger under her chin, lift it, and meet her gaze. “Are you sure?”

She nods, her eyes a little glossy. “I swear I am.”

“Let’s be certain.”

I lift her wrist to my face, my eyes on hers. Waiting for a sign. Waiting for more.

“Yes, please.”

So I bring her wrist to my lips and press a kiss to my business partner’s skin.

She lets out a low moan.

A groan works its way up my chest, and I swallow it down as I dust my lips over her pulse point.

I close my eyes, inhaling her, savoring the scent of her skin, of her lotion, of her Scarlett-ness.

I should move away. But she’s right here.

Images of last night’s fantasies flicker before me, along with the moment just now in front of the mirror, and how she looked at the reflection of her and me.

I open my eyes.

She nibbles on the corner of her lips, gazing down a me as I look up at her.

Is she thinking the same thing I am?

One kiss.

One taste.

That’s all.

I tamp down the groan in my throat as I breathe in.

Then, I take the next step.

I stand, gently take her uninjured hand, and carefully tug her up.

I reach toward her hair, tucking an errant strand behind her ear, testing to see if she’ll make that sound again.

That gasp. That hitch of her breath.

She does. It’s sensual and erotic, and it goes straight to my cock.

I do the one thing I’ve thought about doing for the last few years. The thing I’ve prided myself on resisting. I move closer, lean in, and press a kiss to her cheek.

It’s the same type of kiss I’ve given her every time we greet each other. But this time, I linger. I don’t back away. I simply brush my lips across her cheek and whisper, “All better now?”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I enjoyed this book, but I didn’t find it to be the laugh-out-loud romcom that I’ve come to expect from Lauren Blakeley. But Scarlett and Daniel’s fake marriage-turned-HEA was quite an adventure.

Scarlett and Daniel are business partners, and there’s been a simmering attraction to one another ever since they met. It’s not like they are hiding their mutual attraction, but since neither one wants a relationship, they figure it’s not worth risking their partnership for a casual fling. But that all changes when they are in France working on a business deal and pose as a married couple. They agree to pretend they are newlyweds for a week while scouting out hotel properties, give in to their sexual attraction, and then return home and go back to the way things have always been.

Except that’s not what happens. The more they get to know each other on a personal level, the more they find that there’s even more to like. Daniel has a lot of walls up around himself, and Scarlet is patient and understanding every step of the way. They’ve both experienced heartbreak, but are they willing to take the risk to be more than business partners with each other?

I really liked the openness and honesty between Daniel and Scarlett as they laid out their secrets and desires to one another. They connected on a deeper level than just giving in to the sexual tension between them, which I really liked. There is lots of dirty talk in this book — I kind of feel like that was more than usual from LB! And this book is set in France, giving it a beautiful backdrop and that vacation-fling vibe. But somewhere in the last 25% of the book, I felt like the initial sizzle between Daniel and Scarlett kind of petered out. I’m not sure why that happened, but I just felt like something had shifted and there was less focus on them as a couple at that point.

Overall, this book was a wildly sexy fake relationship story with a touch of instalove. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: My Beautiful Neighbor, by Piper Rayne

Release Date: February 23

Who’s the mystery woman who just walked into my brewery?

I’m not the only one from my Alaskan small town asking themselves that question. But I’m positive, I’m the only one in Sunrise Bay undressing the pretty blonde in my head. Everything about her, from her make-up to her high heels says she’s a fish out of water.

Whispers and speculations run rampant until the secret of who she is gets uncovered. Then the rumor mill goes into overdrive when she announces she’s staying to open a bookstore in the building next to mine—throwing a big wrench into my plans to buy that empty building.

I quickly find myself in a tug-of-war since my business partner/brother is upset she’s ruined the opportunity to expand our business. I try to keep my distance, but I’ve got one sister with a gossip column on the local radio station and two meddling grandmas setting me up as a tour director.

And now I kind of like the idea of our new neighbor staying. But small-town life isn’t for the weak—time will tell if she has what it takes to be one of us.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Piper Rayne kicks off a new family series with My Beautiful Neighbor. Bar owner Cade is inexplicably drawn to Presley, the new girl in town. She’s arrived to settle a family matter, and ends up taking over the space next door to the bar, where Cade and his brother hoped to expand their business. He should see Presley as a rival, but all he sees is the pretty new girl he wants to get to know better.

There’s much more to the story, of course, because Cade and Presley start a no-strings fling and soon both catch feelings. She wasn’t looking for a relationship — she’s setting up a new business, dealing with a family issue and completely uprooted her life as a result. And Cade is kind of a commitaphobe who is afraid to get attached to people and be left behind, a scar he carries from his mom’s death when he was a kid. But the friends with benefits relationship they embark on soon turns more serious than either of them expect — but will Cade let his fears cause him to make a mistake he’ll always regret?

There’s a nice story arc with Cade and Presley’s relationship, and I loved the scene where she stands up for herself after he ghosts her! She was not about to let him walk all over her! There’s great growth on Cade’s side as he comes to terms with how he’s treated her and he grapples to deal with his demons.

The constant clarification of who is a stepbrother or stepsister kind of irked me after a while. It’s clear that this is a big blended family, and we are supposed to believe that they get along well, for the most part. I found the constant “step” annoying after a while, and didn’t think that it was necessary to draw attention to that as often as it was.

If you read the Bailey series, you know all about that family’s G’ma Dori and how she played matchmaker for her grandkids. Now Dori is giving her pal Ethel a hand in marrying off Ethel’s group of 10 blended grandkids. These two ladies and their friends at the retirement village are a hoot! That charades game that Cade and Presley get sucked into was hysterical! There are a few cameos by some of the Bailey kids, which was a nice wink for readers that know that series, but the Greenes are a group all of their own. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series… especially Adam’s estranged wife having amnesia?? Holy moly! There is a free prequel novella setting up this series about how Hank and Marla got together, which is definitely worth checking out for the backstory.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Return To Us, by Corinne Michaels

From New York Times Bestselling author Corinne Michaels comes a new second chance standalone love story.

At eighteen, I walked away from Willow Creek Valley for good.

I was young, scared, and stupid, and it cost me the love of my life—Grayson Parkerson.

Fourteen years later, a crash sends me back home to recover.

Back to where we met, fell in love, and planned a future.

The one he’s now living as a single dad to his daughter.

Working at The Park Inn together gives us a chance to reconnect, and seeing him with his little girl makes me long for the days when he was mine. One look in his gorgeous blue-green eyes, and it’s like I never left. One kiss, and my world is upside down. One night together, and I know without a doubt, in his arms is where I belong.

I’m not the girl I was—intimidated by his wealthy family and desperate to escape our small town. I can imagine a new life for us here.

But he’s learned to guard his heart, and trust won’t come easily.

How can I convince him to give first love a second chance?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Ah! Return To Us ticked all the boxes for a perfect second-chance romance. Grayson is a broody, sullen, single dad, still nursing a heartbreak from 14 years earlier. Jess never really wanted to let him go, and after a near-death experience, she finds herself back in the small town she left behind, facing the ghosts of her past. Namely, Grayson.

There is a lot of hurt between Gray and Jess, and it’s a rough go before they really get to a place where they can be friends again. But I loved how much these two loved one another. They are on fire when they are in the same room together, and I adored how easily Jess slipped into their family, and how she got along with little Amelia.

But despite their love, there’s always this feeling of waiting for the other shoe to drop. Jess only planned to stay long enough to heal after a plane crash. But is reuniting with her first love enough to make her want to stick around? Meanwhile, being left behind is one of Gray’s biggest insecurities… When their relationship reaches a point of Jess being able to physically leave, will Gray leave her before she is able to leave him again?

I loved the link to Sugarloaf and Corinne’s Arrowood Brother series — Jacob was in the plane crash with Jess in Stay For Me, and Gray’s brother, Oliver, had previously dated Devney in the beginning of Fight For Me. There’s a great scene at the end of Return to Us where Jess and Gray have a meeting with Jacob and Brenna regarding Gray’s plan to get out from under his father’s thumb, and I can’t wait to see where the rest of this series goes!!!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I went into Hold The Forevers knowing that it was going to be angsty. I mean, it’s a love triangle where the blurb says that her wedding is interrupted by the other guy. But I had no idea just how angsty this was going to be! Lila, Ash and Cole’s story is an unending tennis match, an emotional rollercoaster of epic proportions.

This book is told all through Lila’s POV, spanning 12 years as she dates Ash in high school, Cole in college, and then flip-flops between them both as a young adult in her 20s and 30s. The timeline is kind of all over the place as each layer of this triangle is peeled back like an onion; chapters go back and forth in time as we learn about her relationships with both guys. I found myself constantly having to flip back a chapter or two to get the years lined up, but I understand how that choice worked for KA Linde in telling this whopper of a story. There is cheating, there is fighting, there is a lot of hurt feelings and broken hearts in Hold The Forevers, but I devoured it in a day.

Honestly, I started off not sure which guy I should be rooting for, but it became clear to me which one really knew her better. And there’s an event that is eventually detailed, and that just made me mistrust one of the two men and eventually shipping the competition.

I didn’t find Lila to be a doormat when it comes to the guys; I was all in on her just being totally confused and in love with them both. Cole and Ash were both jealous asshats at times, and constantly in a pissing match against each other. But Lila always keeps coming back to one of them…

Once Lila makes her final choice, I felt like the story just ended abruptly. I was glad to see that there was a bonus epilogue and immediately downloaded it to read. I loved that conclusion, that closure, and seeing how happy and carefree Future Lila is with the guy she ultimately chooses.

This story is a doozy, but if you don’t mind angst and love triangles, then prepare yourself to get sucked in!

BOOK BLURB

From bestselling author, Dr. Rebecca Sharp, comes a sexy, neighbors-to-lovers romantic comedy…

Ryan Finan needed a change of scene.

No more warmth. No more wooing. No more women.

Needing to get over what the last woman did to him, he’s fled to Michigan for the winter.

A secluded cabin, a wood stove, a bottle of scotch, and guaranteed solitude are all he needs… until Winna Madden recklessly collides into his path—and other parts of him. With her fresh beauty, captivating awkwardness, and far too much talk of freshly jerked meat, Ryan struggles to give his temporary neighbor a necessary cold shoulder.

Having lived in this neck of the woods all her life, Winna knows the gorgeous recluse isn’t prepared for a Michigan winter—nor for the kinds of harsh truths it brings. She’s determined to be a good neighbor—no matter how much he grouses.

As temperatures plunge, their walls tumble down faster than the snow. Soon, the only thing left is a wild desire burning between them.

But Ryan’s stay always had an expiration date. When it arrives, will he walk away? Or will the warmth he found with Winna tempt him to stay?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

Michigan For The Winter is the latest addition to Rebecca Sharp’s Country Love Collection of books. It was a cute, quirky and entertaining neighbors romance between Ryan — who escapes his latest relationship by hiding out in snowy Michigan of all places — and the local sweetheart, Winna. He is all kinds of broody, she is all kinds of fiery, independent sunshine. Albeit a bit awkward. There is an instant attraction and instalove between Ryan and Winna, despite them knowing that their relationship has an expiration date when he leaves at the end of the month.

I found this book to be well written, but it was just lacking that page-turner quality for me that makes the difference between 3 and 4 stars. It was just missing something for me; I liked it but didn’t love it. Ryan ticks all the boxes for a broody hero, and Winna is a great independent, strong, take-no-BS heroine. If you want an easy read, low-angst, opposites-attract romcom, then Michigan For The Winter is going to be right up your alley.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

The Friendship Equation is the first book I’ve read by Suze Robinson and I found this friends-to-lovers story very enjoyable. Adam and Molly have been best friends for years, and are roommates. They both have feelings for the other, but assume that they are friend-zoned. Just as Molly is about to move states away and take a job in NYC, everything changes between them… but is it enough for the chef and the math teacher to change up the equation of their friendship an become something more?

It is a mostly lighthearted read — aside from some drama with his ex — as best friends Adam and Molly navigate the changes to their relationship and finally face the feelings they’ve long had for one another. While Adam doesn’t want to hold Molly back from achieving her dreams, he doesn’t want to make not telling her how he feels his biggest regret in life, either.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Marrying Mr. Wrong, by Claire Kingsley

BLURB
I never should have gone commando in that dress.
I’m almost positive the rest of it wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t been dangling off a hotel balcony with my lady parts in the breeze. And of course the one person to witness my mortification had to be HIM. Camden Cox.
Sure, today he’s gorgeous and wealthy, and fine, I can admit he has a great sense of humor. But once upon a time, he was the boy who loved to make my life miserable.
He no longer pulls my pigtails, but I know his type. He wants one thing, and one thing only. A chance to get in my pants.
Nope. Not happening. Not even with that sexy Southern drawl.
But I’m Sophie Abbott, and if there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s making a mess.
Only this isn’t just a mess. It’s a disaster. A Sophie disaster.
Because after a wild night in Vegas, I wake up naked in his hotel room.
And I’m pretty sure we got married.
Author’s note: An adorkable hot mess who throws a cocky charmer completely off his game. Plus a salty dad playing matchmaker, laugh-out-loud banter, a couch scene that will melt your Kindle, and the swooniest of swoony happy endings.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Accidental marriage perfection! The opening chapter and meet-cute of Marrying Mr. Wrong had me in stitches: Sophie is rappelling out of a hotel room balcony with a bedsheet after getting herself in a bit of a pickle when a hot dude comes to her rescue. But she’s not wearing any panties. And the hot dude is Camden Cox, the grown-up version of the boy who used to pull her pigtails in 7th grade. Talk about awkward! But that’s not even the half of it because a few days later, Sophie wakes up in bed with Cox in Las Vegas, not knowing if they slept together but they did get married!

This romcom was a delight to read. Cox is a cocky, confident hero, and the fact that he’s married to the girl he liked back when he was 12 is like his childhood fantasy come true. Sophie is absolutely adorable. She’s a quirky accident-prone heroine, constantly tripping over her own feet. I can just imagine her “I’m okay!” in my mind because my own daughter falls and says it daily! They agree to stay married for 6 months in order for Cox to avoid another corporate scandal, and somewhere along the way, Sophie starts dating her fake husband. They are so sweet together — and seriously sexy, too!

But as much as Sophie and Cox seem to be smitten with each other in their strange dating-but-married relationship, there is the fact that they don’t know each other very well. And that sets the stage for some secrets and lies to come between them and rip them apart. I loved that breakup scene! Sophie showed such class and grace and was the bigger person, and Cox immediately knew that he was wrong in what he’d done the second she left the room. It takes some time for him to get his head out of his butt, but the guy goes all-out to make a lovely grand gesture — one that had me crying, it was so sweet!

As always, CK has an awesome cast of secondary characters, and I’m not even talking about the other Dirty Martini Running Club girls. (But seriously, Corban and Shephard teaming up together to go all big brother on Cox and protect Sophie was hilarious.) Oliver is a guy I’d want to be friends with, and I think Mel is my favorite new book dad. He and Cox’s mom were hysterical in their quests to marry off their kids. I would honestly love to see something, even a friendship, develop between those two!

I really figured that Sophie was going to end up with Nora’s half brother, Jensen, since she’d always been kind of tongue-tied around him. But I have to say, I loved absolutely everything about Cox and Sophie and they are perfect together! Bring on Nora’s book!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Close Quarters, by Kandi Steiner

My boyfriend’s billionaire boss always gets what he wants.⁣

Menacingly handsome and unquestionably powerful, Theo Whitman need only snap his fingers to have a flock of supermodels fall at his feet. So when his steel gray eyes first meet mine, I expect him to pass right over me, to not give so much as a second thought to my presence.⁣

Instead, he sees me. ⁣

Truly sees me. ⁣

And for a girl who prefers to hide behind her camera lens, it’s the most unnerving experience of my life.⁣

Until he asks me to stay on his yacht for the summer.⁣

All I have to do to earn my keep is be Theo’s on-call photographer when he has guests, and I’ll get a free ride through the Mediterranean with my boyfriend. Easy peasy.⁣

Still, my skin prickles in warning when I say yes.⁣

As the humid days fade into balmy nights, I can’t seem to avoid Theo. And when he finds me, it’s like a rabbit running into a wolf.⁣

His intense gaze immobilizes me. The way he speaks strips me bare. Every brush of his skin sears me like a violent flame.⁣

My boyfriend’s billionaire boss always gets what he wants.⁣

And this time, I think he wants me.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I don’t know why I didn’t think this book would be angsty. I mean, it’s Kandi Steiner. But from the description, I figured it would be a billionaire/forbidden romance. And it was. But the angst factor kind of caught me off guard and blew me away! Well done!

I loved the picture that KS paints with this book, as Theo’s yacht sails around the Mediterranean. I almost imagined i was there myself! Aspen is kind of in way over her head, and the last person she thinks would befriend her on this trip is her boyfriend’s boss. When Theo is with Aspen, he’s like a different guy.

The sizzle between Aspen and Theo is off the charts, like… Joel, who? Oh yeah, this is a love triangle! There was no question in my mind that Theo, brooding, moody, Theo was the guy I wanted Aspen to be with.

And it’s not a love triangle in the traditional sense, because stoic Theo is just there to be Aspen’s friend and confidant (even if he does want more from her!). And as her relationship with Joel unravels as a result of this working trip, her friendship with Theo becomes so much more.

Close Quarters is unlike any other KS book I’ve read, but it has all the same heart, sizzle, angst and gave me all the feels. Theo is one seriously swoony hero!

Meet Kandi

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Eastern Lights, by Brittainy C. Cherry

Eastern Lights, an all-new moving second chance romance and second book in the Compass Series from bestselling author Brittainy Cherry is available now!

I once met a man on a cold Halloween night. He dressed as a superhero, and I dressed in red. For one night, I was his break from reality, and he was the temporary fix for my broken heart.

Two years later, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime to become a senior editor at one of the biggest magazine companies in the world. The only catch? Nail an exclusive interview with New York’s finest bachelor: Connor Roe.

To the rest of the world he was becoming one of the wealthiest men in New York City. To me, he was simply my once upon a time superhero.

My job was to get an exclusive interview with New York’s hottest bachelor. Never in my life did I expect him to want an exclusive with my heart, too.

The only problem with my growing feelings for him? I was set to marry his new business partner.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

“My favorite kinds of flashes of love came solely from the man sitting across from me.”

Eastern Lights was an emotional, gut-wrenching rollercoaster. And why shouldn’t it be? It’s what I’ve come to expect from Brittainy Cherry. I loved, loved, loved Connor and Aaliyah’s story, aka Cap and Red. From their first meeting on a cold Halloween night where they didn’t exchange names to their randomly running into one another two years later to their falling in love, I loved every moment of this story. The last five chapters had me sobbing, and it is so worth the book hangover!

We first met Connor in Southern Storm as Jax’s annoying teenage sidekick. Now he’s all grown up and a real estate mogul in NYC. We get to know why he was the way he was as a kid, and how he got to where he is now. And my heart broke for Aaliyah — all she wanted was a family of her own, a place where she felt like she belonged. And Connor is a workaholic who avoids commitments and relationships because he’s scared of heartbreak. But together these two complement each other so well, and truly save one another in ways they never expected.

Don’t read reviews. Go in blind. Have tissues. It’s worth it.
