I walk out of my life on Thanksgiving Day.

Last-minute shoppers are clearing shelves of stuffing mix and pumpkin pie filling as I heap my cart with everything I might need. (Dry beans. Canned vegetables. Rice.) I move through the grocery store like a prepper running late for doomsday. (Boxed milk. Limes. Spare flashlight.) I am quick so I won’t lose my nerve. (Apples. Toilet paper. Red wine.) I try not to think beyond leaving. (Cabbage. Playing cards. Bottled water.) Or about what I might be leaving behind.

My mother calls as I’m wrangling the grocery bags into the back seat of my overstuffed Subaru. I haven’t told her that I won’t be there for Thanksgiving dinner, and she’s not ready to hear that I’m skipping town. Not when I’ve barely left the house for the better part of a year. She’ll have questions and I don’t have an- swers, so I let the call go to voicemail.

be, the shiny hull painted navy blue and the transom empty, still waiting for a name. For a moment I expect Ben’s head to pop up from the companionway. I wait to see his little fuck-me grin, and to hear the excitement in his voice when he tells me today is the day. But the hatch is padlocked, and the deck is covered in bird shit—another part of my life I’ve let fall into neglect.

Ten months and six days ago, Ben swallowed a bottle of pre- scription Paxil and chased it with the cheap tequila that lived under the sink, and I don’t know why. He was already gone when I came home from work and found him on the kitchen floor. In his suicide note, he told me I was his reason for living. Why was I not enough?

I breathe in deep, to the bottom of my lungs. Let it out slowly.

Step onto the boat and unlock the hatch.

The air is stale and hot, smelling of wood wax, new canvas, and a hint of diesel. I haven’t been aboard since before Ben died. Spiders have spun their homes in the corners of the cabin and a layer of dust has settled on every surface, but the changes leave me breathless. The interior brightwork is varnished and glossy. The ugly original brown-plaid cushion covers have been replaced with red canvas and Peruvian stripes. And a framed graphic hangs on the forward bulkhead that reads i & love & you.

“Why do all this work for a trip you’ll never take?” I say out loud, but it’s another question without an answer. I wipe my eyes on the sleeve of my T-shirt. One of the things I’ve learned is that suicide doesn’t break a person’s heart just once.

It takes me the rest of the morning to clean the boat, unload the contents of my car, and stow everything away. Traces of Ben are everywhere: a saucepan at the bottom of the hanging locker,

an expired six-pack of Heineken in the cockpit lazarette, a moldy orange life jacket stuffed in the refrigerator. I throw these things in the trash, but even with my spider plant hanging from an overhead handrail and my books lining the shelf, the boat belongs to Ben. He chose it. He did the renovations. He charted the course. He set the departure date. My presence feels like a layer as temporary as dust.

The last thing in my trunk is a shoebox filled with photos taken using Ben’s old Polaroid, a dried hibiscus flower from our first date, a handful of dirty-sexy love letters, and a suicide note. I take out a single photo—Ben and me at the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse about a week before he died—and stash the box in the bottom drawer of the navigation station. I tape the photo to the wall in the V-berth, right above my pillow.

And it’s time to go.

My only plan was to spend today in bed—my only plan since Ben’s death—but I was startled out of sleep by an alarm. The notification on my phone said: TODAY IS THE DAY, ANNA! WE’RE GOING SAILING! Ben had programmed the event into my calendar almost three years ago—on the day he showed me his sailboat and asked me to sail the world with him—and I had forgotten. I cried until my eyelashes hurt, because there is no lon- ger a we and I’ve forgotten how to be me without Ben. Then I got out of bed and started packing.I’ve never been sailing without Ben. I don’t always get the ter- minology correct—it’s a line, Anna, not a rope—and I’ll be lucky if I make it to the end of the river. But I am less afraid of what might become of me while sailing alone in the Caribbean than of what might become of me if I stay.

Just My Type is a sexy and sweet opposites attract friends to lovers romance. Sophia Karlson is a new-to-me author, and I really enjoyed her writing style and the journey Mark (aka Stings) and Hayley went on. It’s set in South Africa, and tells the story of a rugby star who has a reputation as a womanizer who never sleeps with the same woman twice and the photographer who is convinced that she is not his type.

Mark and Hayley have mutual friends, so they run in the same circle and have known each other for years. As they get to know one another during their best friends’ engagement party, Hayley realizes that she really misjudged Stings, and she just may be his type after all…

This book started off as a slow burn for me, but once it really got going, I loved Mark and Hayley, and what they drew out of the other. I thought this was going to be another lighthearted manwhore-falls-for-the-good-girl story — and it was — but there are a whole host of deeper topics that come into play in this book, like anxiety, mental health and depression. And the effects that social media can have on a person. I loved the scene where Mark kind of freaks out and doesn’t know how to handle being surrounded by his fans… it brought another aspect of the life of a celebrity to light, one that I haven’t seen much of in the sports romance genre.

A gem of a romance!

“Don’t let the resistance pull your arms forward at the top,” Isla told him. “Keep your hands in line with your ears.”

He repeated the movement, noting her suggestions, sweat gathering along his neck. “Like this?”

“Exactly. Take it slow.” 

She crouched next to him, the closest they’d been all session, and his stomach swooped. Fucking swooped, like he was a love-struck teen. The sensation divided his focus, part of it staying on the rope in his hands, a fraction diverting to her proximity, another locked on his reacting body. She shifted positions slightly, seemed to hesitate, then she placed her hand on his back. 

Forget divided. All his attention zeroed in on that one spot. Isla. Hand. Hot. So much heat concentrating where she touched. He leaned back a bit, couldn’t control his body’s urge to ask for more. More contact, more Isla. 

Her fingers spread wider. “Don’t overarch your back,” she said, her voice lower, breathy. “Sit straighter.”

He paused with the triceps rope at his chin, fixed his posture and turned his head, bringing them almost nose to nose. “Like this?”

Her gaze dropped to his lips. His thighs flexed. 

“Yeah,” she murmured. “Like that.” 

The moment lingered, sexual tension vibrating between them so thoroughly he was surprised the walls didn’t shake. And he was pissed. Angry at their circumstances. Upset for Isla and all she’d dealt with in her life. Mad that the easy friendship they’d developed had devolved in a matter of hours to broken sentences and awkward glances. None of it was okay.

Determined to salvage something from this mess, he worked through his next rep with slow precision, keeping his back straighter, his arms at the correct angle. At the end of the rep, he said, “What do you call spending the afternoon with a cranky rabbit?”

Isla made a startled sound, a muffled kind-of-laugh. From the corner of his eye, he caught the hint of a smile. “I don’t know,” she said.

“A bad hare day.”

Her tentative smile grew. “Have I told you your humor hovers at a grade-one level?”

“Have I told you that you have no sense of humor?”

“I wouldn’t know. I usually tune you out.” 

He chuckled at that, turned his head toward her, bringing their lips dangerously close again. Her hand was still on his back, maintaining his posture. Her thumb moved, a small stroke he felt everywhere. They breathed deeply at the same time, their chests expanding like their hearts were reaching toward each other.Then they got back to work. Less awkward this time. They talked more easily. Joked occasionally. Everything out of Isla’s mouth sounded like foreplay to him: move slower, hold that position, yeah like that. But he somehow found his focus, stayed attuned to his body’s needs and pains, assessing when muscle fatigue meant a break was due. Neither of them crossed the invisible line they’d drawn. They were once again patient and physiotherapist, no different than during their early sessions. But everything was different.

The Knockout Rule is a fun, modern spin on the Cyrano de Bergerac story, a super slow burn romance set in the world of professional boxing. I loved how my initial misconceptions about big, brutish Brick (aka Eric) were proved wrong, because he is super sweet, so smart, and has such a sensitive heart. Isla is a smart, fun, strong, heroine, but I really adored Eric. Swoony, swoony Eric.

It took me a while to really get into this book, but once I did, it was a page-turner. Eric turned out to be everything that Isla didn’t think she wanted, and absolutely all that she really needed. They don’t really like one another much at first, but as the story goes on, they end up being perfectly perfect for one another! I haven’t read anything else in this series; this is actually the first Kelly Siskind book I’ve read. I thought she handled the subplot regarding Isla’s mental health quite nicely, and found this story overall to be very well-written.

“Are you ready?” Farrah says, coming from behind me and massaging my shoulders. I move my head side to side while we both hop up and down. “Did you do those finger exercises I told you about?”

Set against the beautiful backdrop of Hawaii, Moments Like This is a contemporary romance filled with sweet and swoony moments… but are were they all a lie? This book was a real page turner. As more and more of Warren and Andi’s story unfolded, I wanted to see where it would go next… especially when their friendship and romance hits a speed bump.

Warren is a bit of a tortured hero who is not looking for love but is completely captivated by Andi. She’s trying to find herself again after her life turned into a bit of a dumpster fire. Will he open himself up to love? Will she remain in Hawaii or return to the mainland? This story has a bit of a Hallmark feel to it (clean romance, so lots of sweet moments, but no sexy time), and is a nicely written collaboration between Anna Gomez and actor Kristoffer Pohala, making his writing debut.

In addition to co-starring with Rainn Wilson in Backstrom (FOX), he had a multi-season role on the acclaimed series Mad Men (AMC) and Castle (ABC). Polaha is also well-known for starring in Hallmark Channel movies such as Dater’s Handbook with Meghan Markle, and the Mystery 101 franchise on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.

Polaha first received attention for his portrayal of John F. Kennedy, Jr. in the TV movie, America’s Prince: The John F. Kennedy Jr. Story, opposite Portia de Rossi. He has appeared in numerous independent features, including Where Hope Grows, Devil’s Knot (Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon), and the Tim Tebow film, Run the Race.

Polaha has a featured role opposite Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman 1984 and in Jurassic World: Dominion.

In addition to his work as an actor, producer, and director, Polaha is branching into the book world by co-authoring a new series. He is also involved with several charitable organizations, including being an ambassador for World Vision, a board member for HerArtsInAction, and The Polaha Family Circus Foundation.

Polaha was born in Reno, Nevada, and he is married to actress Julianne Morris. They have three sons.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Falling Stars series comes to an end with Rhys and Maggie’s story in Beneath The Stars. Swoony, angsty and sweet, this friends to lovers romance had me flipping through the pages. The chemistry between Rhys and Maggie is explosive, although they try to stay away from one another. Both of them are carrying around some major baggage and fighting demons from their past, especially Rhys. There is a bit of an underlying suspense to the story as the mystery of Rhys’ past unfolds, and his reasons for believing that she deserves better than he can give her.

The age difference between them (12 years), Maggie being his best friend’s baby sister… and that tortured, tortured hero. Rhys is walking around with so much guilt due to past events. And Maggie’s life has been filled with so much pain. They perfectly complement one another, and become each other’s safe place.

Rhys and Maggie’s story is a wonderful journey, written perfectly, and hits all the notes of a swoony, sweet romance with the right amount of angst and a magical ending! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Bet The Farm is so much fun! Jake and Olivia’s story is magical! From the first page until the very end, I was completely hooked on this second-chance romance. Does one kiss make it a second-chance story? Well, it’s definitely an enemies-to-lovers tale with lots of swoon, plenty of snark and a HEA that had me in tears.

When Olivia’s grandfather dies, she inherits half of her family’s dairy farm. The other half goes to broody, sullen Jake — Pop’s right-hand man who was like a grandson to him. Livi doesn’t want to give up her birthright, and Jake just wishes she’d go back to the city. As they work through their grief, they also attempt to work together in saving the farm. Jake is resistant to every one of Olivia’s “big city ideas” and his stubbornness causes her endless frustration.

I loved the history between these two, and how they were both suffering after Pops died. That common ground between them leads to a deep connection, and this story was so well-written as they cross the bridge from hating one another to being head over heels in love. This story is sweet, playful, full of sass and snark. The chemistry between Jake and Livi jumps off the page, and as much as I couldn’t wait to see what happens next, I didn’t want this story to end!

I was sad to see Bet The Farm come to an end! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.
