Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

For Emery is a really cute childhood best friends/YA romance. I loved how the reader really gets to know the sweet, protective nature of Jordan and Emery’s relationship as kids, to how she develops a hero worship of him as a preteen and then to their evolving, confusing feelings as teenagers. The one kiss they share is so sweet and pure, and has the possibility of so much more… but then Emery disappears into the night without a trace.

The next four years change Jordan. He’s hardened as a result of losing his best friend, and I don’t even think he realizes how much her absence from his life has affected her. He’s been lashing out, become a bit of a playboy and is a big man on campus at Alabama State, where he is somewhat of a football god. For Emery, Jordan has never been far from her mind. She’s followed his football career and watched every game (just as she said she would), even if it’s had to be online from states away. But finally, she’s able to be back in Alabama with Jordan… and their reunion does not go as expected.

As Jordan and Em piece their friendship back together, I felt like I traveled that road with them. I saw a lot of growth in these characters, and I was rooting for them to finally get on the same page and realize that they’ve had each other’s hearts from the time they were little kids. There is some outside drama in this story that deals with domestic violence, so reader beware. But I think that J. Nathan did a great job of handling the abusive stepfather situation, and I really liked how the periphery characters from the previous books in this series came together to support Jordan when he’s facing disciplinary action from the football team as a result of his actions with Emery’s stepdad.

For Emery is the fourth book in the For You series, but reads as a complete standalone. I have not read any of the previous books in this series, and while a few of those characters make appearances in For Emery, they are not directly involved in the storyline. Except, I suppose, that Sabrina has become Jordan’s close friend during the years that Emery was away.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt
Emery stood there, her eyes dancing with amusement. Her skinny jeans
and sparkly black tank top made her fit in with the rest of the girls in the
crowded bar. But she wasn’t just any girl. “What’d you do?”
My eyes narrowed.
She ticked her head over her shoulder. “To make her ditch you in the
middle of the dance floor?”
“I told her I wasn’t taking her home with me.”
Emery stared at me, her brows drawn. “Why not? Isn’t that what you college
football players do? Get girls to go home with you?”
I shrugged. “Not sure. You wanna come home with me?”
She laughed and her entire face lit up like it did when we were
younger. And that right there. That was the reason the other girl wasn’t coming
home with me. She didn’t look at me like Emery did.
The thought hit me hard, nearly leveling me.
I wanted to be looked at the way Emery looked at me—like she saw the
real me. I deserved that.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Maybe Ever After, by Cassie Graham

No one tells you what happens when you fall in love with your best friend.
They don’t tell you it’s like waiting for the answer to a question no one can hear you ask.

Meet Brynn Darling. Successful event coordinator. Celebrity friends. At the top of her game. But after many failed attempts at finding love, and a realization that her best friend is clueless, she’s ready to move on.

Easton Cole has been in the friend zone since . . . well, forever. He fills the void with unimportant people and never gets attached. That is until Brynn begins seeing a guy who threatens everything he’s ever wanted.

All bets are off.

Maybe it’ll never happen.
Maybe she’ll fall in love.
Maybe they’ll get their ever after . . . after all.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 1556 Fantastic Stars!

This was a fantastic best friends romance. I love how quirky and dorky Brynn is, and how unsure she is around Easton. She’s been in love with him for as long as she can remember, and is sure that he does not feel the same way. After all, he’s not just her best friend, but that of her twin brother as well. And they both work together at a fan convention company.

Easton, meanwhile, has been in love with Brynn from the moment he laid eyes on her when they were kids. After several charged moments, everything changes between them when they end up in a hotel room on a road trip following a work event and they sleep together. When they wake up the next day, their friendship has changed… but maybe not in the way that Brynn was hoping. Easton becomes moody and withdraws from her, leading her to wonder what she did wrong… and ultimately accepting a date from Jude, the star of a hot supernatual TV show and someone she knows from the fan conventions.

I wanted to smack Easton so many times during Part 1. Why was he such a jerk? But then we get to Part 2 — Easton’s POV — and my opinion totally changed. He is so damaged, and is so insecure. He doesn’t do relationships because he doesn’t know how. His parents royally messed him up. And he feels so friend-zoned by Brynn (and her brother doesn’t think E’s good enough for her), so he hasn’t wanted to try. But after one taste of Brynn, Easton knows he needs to get his own ish together if he stands a chance of being with her forever.

There is a lot of miscommunication between this couple. Even though they tried to keep things casual, it never was for either one of them. The prologue had me completely hooked, and I loved every page of this story. The characters are complex but relatable. There is a great camaraderie between Brynn, Easton and her brother, and Easton has a great relationship with her parents as well, who were more parents to him than his own mom and dad.

The meaning behind Easton’s 1556 tattoo? Oh, my heart!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

#1

“Are you sure?” Because she isn’t acting like it.

“Yeah, this will solve the questioning.” That doesn’t sound so great.

I rock back on my heels. “About?”

Splotches of red stain her cheeks. “Ah, well… if this,” she motions between us, “was heading in a romantic direction.”

I feel the blood drain from my face. “What do you mean?”

“If we’re living together, the potential of us dating is zippo. We’ll be roommates and friends, but that’s all. Otherwise it will be awkward and tense and blah. No, thanks. Setting this boundary will cut out the possibility.”

I choke on the brick lodged in my throat. “Wait, what?”

“Can you imagine the mess we’d be stuck in if things went sour? Better to not chance it, right?”

No.

No, no, no.

I blink slowly, trying to process her words. Is this an unwritten rule I wasn’t aware of? And what, now I’m trapped in the friend-zone? I avert my eyes, glaring at a neon sign stuck to the far wall. An outcome that doesn’t involve us as a couple seems impossible. I rapidly search for a counter-argument, begging for a way out of this mess.

What the hell happens now?

#2

Addison licks her lips. “So, uh, what’s your nickname?”

I shrug. “Don’t really have one.”

“Why not?”

“I dunno.”

“Well, we can’t have that.”

I rest an elbow on the table. “No?”

She taps her chin. “How about sugar or cupcake? You’re a big dessert fan.” I wince, and she laughs. “Yeah, those are bad.” Her eyes flick to mine. “What about honey?”

“Because I’m so sweet?”

Addison’s lashes flutter. “Uh, maybe. Um, never mind. Maybe something related to work?”

“Like bolt or wrench?”

She huffs. “Ugh, no.”

I gesture toward Trey. “The guys at Jacked Up call me rookie. Makes sense since I am one in many ways.”

Addison blinks slowly. “And your last name.”

I want to smack my forehead. “That too.”

Her green eyes light up. “Rooks? That’s got a nice ring to it. And it’s the little tower piece in chess. You’re the corner of our castle, holding it up.”

My body gets warm when she whispers that. Whenever she ties us together in any capacity, my ego swells tenfold. I stretch to sit taller, my shoulders and chest expanding.

“I like Rooks.”

“Me too,” she murmurs.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Break-Up Bet, by Cat Carmine

Title: The Break-Up Bet
Author: Cat Carmine
Genre: Standalone Romantic Comedy
Release Date: January 31, 2019

Blurb

Never make a bet with a man who plays to win…

Especially not a man like handsome, arrogant Connor Pratt.
AKA the huge PITA who’s currently crashing in my spare room.
AKA my brother’s best friend since they were about six.
AKA the one guy who still makes me feel like an awkward tongue-tied loser.
But when Connor moved in, I got a glimpse of another side of him. Because, like me, Connor’s going through a nasty break-up. And, like me, he’s just doing whatever he can to get through it.
Unfortunately, his method involves drinking alarming amounts of whiskey and watching a lot of, um … movies … that make every inch of my skin flush.
I’m just trying to be helpful when I tell him that he should try my way: copious amounts of baked goods, sappy romantic comedies, and late nights spent whining with girlfriends.
But I should have known Connor would take that as a challenge.
Now, he says he’ll try my way of dealing with a break-up … but only if I agree to try his. Six months rent to the person whose method works best.
We call it the break-up bet. And I’m going to win. Except right now, it feels like there’s a whole lot more at stake than just rent money…

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

The Break-Up Bet is a cute, quirky, fun brother’s best friend romance. Lucy is a hoot, and Conner is the playboy that I love to see fall to his knees when he realizes that he’s in love.

Lucy’s had a thing for her brother’s best friend for years. But Conner is quite the ladies’ man. They both find themselves going through a breakup at the same time — while Conner happens to be crashing on her couch. But both of them approach mending a broken heart in very different ways.

I love the twist that this story then takes. A relationship pact between Conner and Lucy is formed, but it’s whose method of dealing with a breakup is more effective, rather than the typical no-strings attached fling. Of course, there is sizzling sexual chemistry between the two, and the build-up to them giving in is a marvelous slow burn. But I really enjoyed the different twist that Cat Carmine put on this story. I wish we could have seen more of Conner and Lucy together as a couple and how their relationship progresses, but I didn’t feel unsatisfied either.

I’ve never read anything by CC before, and this was a delightfully fun story. The characters are well-rounded and relatable, and their relationships with their friends are as well. This book is a standalone, but apparently the other characters have been the subjects of previous books. I am definitely intrigued in finding out more!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Book Blurb:

Imogen

There is no way we can still love and cherish one and other.

When I married Theo Walsh, the rough, bearded townie who worked construction on my family’s summer house, I’d found my happily ever after.

That was before the fighting.
Before the jealousy.
Before the infertility.

We’ll be divorced long before death does us part.

But to secure my place in the family dynasty, there is just one more hoop I have to jump through. And I need him to do it.

Faking the marriage we once thrived in will gut me.
Especially with the secret I’m carrying.

Theo

I would have sacrificed for her until the end of time.

My job.
My home.
My happiness.

I’d given it all up to marry her. That’s how much I loved Imogen Weston, the daughter to one of the world’s richest families.

From the day we met, I’d done nothing but try to live up to the man she expected to be with. And now, I was done.

Sure, I’d complete this one final ask of hers, even if it destroyed me.

But I’ve made her promise the one thing that might save me. She swore that after she got everything she ever wanted, she wouldn’t look back.

I made my wife vow to leave me forever.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

As much as I love a second-chance or enemies-to-lovers workplace romance, I find that the marriage-in-crisis stories really gut me. I’ve read — and loved — several of Carrie Aarons’ romcoms, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from a darker, more dramatic story. Down We’ll Come, Baby blew me away.

Theo and Imogen are complete opposites, from two different worlds. She’s a pampered princess from American royalty, and he’s a poor pauper, a townie from the beaches where her family “summers.” But the connection between them is so strong, even in their darkest hours. This heartbreaking story takes place during the struggle in their marriage, and really explores how miscarriage and infertility can test even the strongest of bonds.

Having miscarried myself, I felt every pang of failure and loss that Imogen felt. It’s so raw and unlike any other pain, and I connected with her and Theo immediately. While I understand how some readers thought that Imogen was a doormat where her parents are concerned, I also understood how she was desperately trying to keep the peace. Even though her family drew a huge wedge between she and her husband.

But true love prevails, and Theo and Imogen get everything they ever wanted by the time the book ends. It’s a messy, emotional journey, and I cried so many times for his couple. Down We’ll Come, Baby is so true to life, and it’s an amazing tale of forgiveness, true love, inner strength, loyalty and beautiful rainbows.

Wicked Player, an all-new forbidden sports romance by Stacey Lynn is now live.

WickedPlayer-ebook

Gage Bryant has the best hands and the quickest feet of any wide receiver in football.

He also has a secret—one he’ll do anything to protect.

He’s a member of The Velvet Club. With airtight non disclosure agreements, playing at Velvet gives him the freedom to assert his dominance and control in a way that not only serves him on the football field, but the way he craves in the bedroom.

What he doesn’t expect is for his most recent partner to be one of the reporters assigned to follow him around in the weeks before he opens a new wing at the local children’s hospital.

When it’s clear Elizabeth Hayes has no idea he’s the man who had her blindfolded and bound beneath him, Gage realizes things just got a lot more interesting.

He can have her body at night, giving her all the pleasure she begs for in a way he needs. And he can keep his heart, as well as his identity, out of their encounters.

After all, the absolute worst thing that could happen would be to have this sexy little reporter reveal how wicked he truly is.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Wow! This book is so much spicier than anything I’ve read before from Stacey Lynn! It’s not so much a BDSM book, but Gage and Elizabeth do meet in a sex club, so the scenes are rather explicit and more erotic than some of her other romances.

The morning after the hottest, most intense connection either one of them had — anonymously, of course — Gage realizes that one of the reporters covering the events surrounding the opening of his new hospital wing is Beth. They both feel a visceral connection to the other, even when she doesn’t know who he is.

But that’s the issue I had with this book: it all works out in the end, but I found it kinda icky that Gage KNEW who Beth was before their second encounter at the club and didn’t say anything. It didn’t sit right with me.

I still liked and enjoyed this story very much, and really thought Gage was a great guy. His reasons for wanting to keep his proclivities private were understandable, as were Elizabeth’s. Even beyond that, Gage was so sweet in their interactions, as rough as they got. And why he was opening the family center was remarkable.

Wicked Player is part of the Rough Riders series, but reads as a true standalone. I have not read the other books yet, and the story flowed just fine for me. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt:

I memorized his stats. Six-four, two hundred fifty pounds. Born in 1986. And then I stumbled on a photo spread he’d done for Men’s Health and my jaw dropped.

Butt freaking naked. A football helmet held in front of him was the only thing covering him. And hot damn. This guy. Chiseled, strong jaw. Straight Roman nose. Piercing eyes.

He was freaking gorgeous. My heart rate kicked into fast gear. My fingertips sizzled. I had to spend weeks following this guy around? The very idea sent a pulse of excitement to the tops of my thighs I tried to shake away.

I couldn’t get a crush on this guy. He was a source. A story. But good grief to the high heavens, he was the most beautiful if stern looking man I’d ever seen in my life.

“Holy shit,” I whispered, forgetting we worked in an open office and even though I was quiet, people could hear me.

“What is it, Elizabeth?” That came from Amanda. “Oh dear. You got the Gage story?”

She was already at my back, peering over my shoulder. “Man as sexy as that shouldn’t be allowed to walk free,” I said.

“I know.” She laughed and bumped my shoulder. “He’s God’s gift to women that’s for sure. And yet from what I’ve heard, he’s never had a girlfriend, at least not one he’s gone public with.”

“Really?” I twisted in my chair and faced her. “Never?”

She shrugged. “Not in the four years he’s been here. And I’d know. Rough Riders are my team. I follow all of ‘em on Twitter and Instagram. He posts a pic and gets over four thousand comments, mostly from women, but to the best of my knowledge, he’s never been seen in public with a woman except his mom.”

Wow. That was…that was crazy. Everything leaked.

“Hmm,” I said, tapping my finger to my lips. “So I would imagine the public would want to know if he was involved, right?”

She laughed lightly. “Yeah, but watch yourself. This is a hospital piece, not a gossip column. You go digging too far and you’ll blow your chance.”

Title: Someone Like You

Author: Alexandra Silva

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Someone Like You:

Dorian Anson is my friend. She’s the only person who’s ever questioned my smiles. My jokes. The one liners that have our friends shaking their heads at me.
I’ve lived my life on those smiles. They never failed me, until her.

I wasn’t counting on her when I designed my front. I never imagined the possibility of someone like her coming into my life.

The wild hair, the kind smile and those eyes that see everything.

She was the girl with the beautiful soul, pretty face and whole heart. But hearts aren’t made to stay whole.

I watched hers break. I watched her tears fall. I watched as her world tilted on its axis and shattered at her feet.

This girl.

She sees me, all parts of me—the truths I try to hide, the secrets I bury. What’s mine and what’s not.

She sees it all, and I can only hope the truth isn’t too much. That she won’t walk away.

That she won’t leave me…alone.

We both have a past. We have ghosts. We have fears.

I’m hoping that somehow in the end, we’ll have each other too.

I’ve never needed anyone before her, and I know I’ll never want anyone else after her.

There is no one like her.

My pretty girl.

Dorian.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Over the years our girls’ nights had become more of a child friendly affair. Gone were the cocktails and in was the tea. Willow and one of our friends, Beth, had stumbled on this gem of a tearoom a while back and we’d made it a point to hold our monthly catch-up sessions here. It was a small little teashop in a quiet little residential backstreet close to Willow’s flat in Kensington.

Molly and Pippa enjoyed the vintage dress up box and us older girls liked the natter. Quincy, Willow and I were childhood friends.

Quincy was probably the strongest person I knew. We’d lost Phillip, her brother, and on top of that she’d suffered a stillbirth and divorced her cheating, scumbag of a husband after finding out she was pregnant with Pippa.

I thought that I’d die when I’d found out that Phillip was gone, I couldn’t remember anything but the sheer pain. There were times that it still hurt as much now as it did then. Especially when Phillip’s absence, his death, impacted our son. Losing the man you thought you’d love for the rest of your life was a bitch, but merely thinking of the possibility of losing Daniel, that was enough to truly kill me.

My sweet boy.

“Oh god, this has got to be the best brownie I’ve ever had.” Quincy moaned as she shoved the rest of the small square in her mouth. “If we come here more often, I’ll have to join a gym.”

“I think it might be worth it though.” I giggled, as I watched Molly and Pippa wrap white feather boas around Beth’s and Willow’s shoulders.

“What’re you giggling about over there?” Willow looked between me and Quincy, her eyes narrowed at us like she suspected we were keeping something from her.

“Nothing.”

“The cake.”

“You say nothing,” she gestured toward me and then over at Quincy, “she says cake. Which is it?”

“Cake.” Quincy and I both sighed. It was good cake, almost better than sex, or what I remembered of it.

“I can think of something better than cake…” Beth snickered, waggling her brows at Willow. Her Welsh twang was something that made me smile to this day, I swear she could make the Hail Mary sound dirty.

Molly looked between us, her face pinched in confusion as she said, “Uncle Jake says there’s nothing better than cake and ice cream.”

“Speaking of,” Beth stood from her makeover chair and sat back at the table with us, “how did the football thing go?”

“Good.”

“Just good?” Quincy asked as she examined one of the mini scones glistening with jam and clotted cream atop.

“Yes.”

“Why’re you being so evasive about it?” Willow gave me one of her curious looks.

“I’m not, the match went well, they won. It was nice of him.” I glanced over at Pippa and Molly who were going through the dress up box again.

“Yeah, it was really nice of him.” Beth sang a little too teasingly.

“Stop it.”

“Come on, Dorian, you have to admit he’s a little bit nice himself.”

“Beth.” I warned as she shrugged like I was the one being silly.

I didn’t want to talk about him with them. I didn’t want to think about him any more than I already did, especially about how pleasant he was to look at or spend time with.

“She’s got a point, Dory, he’s actually…you know…” Quincy smiled, her cheeks blushing like she was saying something inappropriate.

“Yeah, he’s hot until he opens his mouth and then you want to slap him or snap his tongue off.” Willow rolled her eyes as she poured herself another cup of tea. I internally chuckled at her indignation, she and Jake were very alike in the way they interacted with people. They didn’t let many people in, but when they did, they were loyal to a fault. Not to mention that they were both great at pressing people’s buttons.

“I love Uncle Jake, he’s my goddaddy like you, Dory.” Molly chimed as she and Pippa sat at the table with us.

“I’m your godmother, sweetie.” I couldn’t help but tap her little button nose with the tip of my finger, something she always pulled a sort of sour face about, but never complained.

God, I’m that aunt that pinches cheeks and coos like a bloody overbearing fool.

The thought alone made me cringe as I then started to imagine myself as the cat lady on the second floor of my building. Nice to everyone, but essentially invisible and alone. As unlikely as that would be with this lot around, it still struck a dissonant chord and it made me uneasy.

When did I become this person? I asked myself, the answer immediately flashing in my mind as a pair of distant, beautiful brown eyes and a soft cheeky smile. Phillip.

“I still struggle with that decision.” Willow groaned.

“He’s great with the kids,” I sighed, trying to ignore the pang my thoughts had brought with them.

“Because he’s a child himself.”

“You know he’s not that bad.” I’d known Jake for over a decade. We’d spent a lot of time with one another. I’d learned that there was a lot more to him than what most people saw, and a part of me didn’t know what to make of that.

I didn’t understand why he’d allowed me to see him in all those lights, but it made me happy, even if that happiness brought a sting of guilt with it.

“But, he is hot, and he likes spending time with you.” Beth smiled. “Anyone would think he might like you…like you. Plus, you need to get back into the tango of things.”

“I can barely balance Daniel and work, and thinking about people like that…well, I don’t know, it seems wrong. Oh, and I have a child.”

Thinking about Jake like that didn’t feel wrong, what felt wrong was thinking about him in one breath and in the next thinking about Phillip. Sometimes I wondered if I would still think of Jake like that if Phillip were still here. If we’d even be friends like we are. The worst part of it was the panicked feeling at the possibility that we might not be the way we are if Phillip hadn’t died.

It was a panic laced with guilt and self-loathing because what if I still felt all the same things toward Jake even if Phillip was here?

It doesn’t mean you’d still be together.

The thought made me cringe. I couldn’t imagine not being with him, not when we had Daniel.

“I have Daniel.”
