Sunny Shelly’s Review: Love on the Lake, by Helena Hunting

Love on the Lake, a beautiful small town standalone romance filled with laughter and tears from New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting, is live now!

Teagan Firestone has always been the dutiful daughter, especially since her mom died. But as her father finally begins to move on, it’s her turn to do the same. Her destination: Pearl Lake, a close-knit community with an entrepreneurial spirit and secrets of its own.

One of them is Aaron Saunders, who dropped out of college to work construction for Pearl Lake’s upper class. He’s a mystery and has a playboy reputation—that is, until he meets Teagan. Neither of them is looking for love, but in a town this small, it’s hard not to let your heart get involved.

As their romance heats up, Aaron’s elusive past comes to light and Teagan is there for him, bringing them even closer together. But when Teagan is forced to face her own demons, her inability to accept the support of friends and family threatens the life she’s worked so hard to build.

Can Aaron love her, even when she can’t love herself?

Excerpt

She crooks a finger, beckoning me closer. But there’s only six inches separating us. If I take a step forward, my boots will touch her toes. So I bend instead, until my ear is next to her lips, like I’m waiting for her to tell me a secret.
For a moment I consider the fact that I’ve been up and down the stairs to the loft at least a dozen times. The only air circulation in here is from a portable fan, so I’ve been sweating and shirtless for several hours. I might not smell all that fresh.
But that thought disappears when her fingertips drag along my collarbone and I feel the warmth of her breath at the edge of my jaw.
“Aaron.”
Her palm wraps around the back of my neck. So soft. So warm.
I swallow and grind out, “I’m listening.”
Her thumb finds that spot between my ear and my jaw, and she presses, gently at first and then more firmly. Her lips brush the shell of my ear, and she whispers, “Look at me.”
I feel like a marionette, and she’s pulling all my strings. I turn my head toward her, and her lips brush across my cheek, sending a hot shiver down my spine, lighting me up like a pinball machine.
Teagan Firestone is a dangerous woman. Sweet, beautiful, broken, and yet . . . bold and resilient. She’s a lethal combination, and it’s all compounded when those soft lips meet mine.
I don’t even know what’s happening. Well, I know. I’m kissing her. Or she’s kissing me. She definitely started it.
It’s like an explosion. Like an entire warehouse of firecrackers igniting at the same time. I groan into her mouth and wrap an arm around her waist, pulling her flush against me.
Our tongues tangle, and her other hand grips my biceps, sliding up and over my shoulder. She knocks my hat off my head, and it drops to the floor behind me. And then both of her hands are in my hair, sliding through the damp strands, gripping at the crown, angling my head farther to the side. Deepening the kiss.
Dragging it out.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

It took me a little longer to get into Love on the Lake than it did with Love Next Door… but once I got into Teagen and Aaron’s story, I was hooked. This book has the same Hallmark movie feel as LND, and I am loving this Lakeside series!

Teagen is Van’s sister from LND, and Aaron is one of Van and Dillon’s colleagues. Aaron and Teagen definitely get off on the wrong foot, and it leads to the town flirt being all surly and grumpy around this ray of sunshine. Until he’s not. Swoon! Underneath that anger was an adorable teddy bear of a guy.

But Teagen and Aaron’s path to forever is kinda bumpy. The guy is hiding some big secrets, and Teagen has a plethora of baggage stemming from her family’s financial problems. I loved how Teagen tried to adjust to being working class after growing up a spoiled princess. She definitely made the most of it, trying to find herself and what she liked, and now appreciating all the things that she used to take for granted. Aaron was great in guiding her along the way, trying to get her to stop feeling guilty about where she came from and to embrace the person she is becoming.

This book starts out rather lighthearted, but the second half packs quite a punch. Aaron’s secrets come to light, and Teagen’s demons threaten to destroy everything she’s built for herself in her new home. This story took a turn I wasn’t expecting with the deeper plotline in the second half, but I was rooting for Aaron and Teagen all the way and was so happy to see them come through the other side.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Fair Catch by Kandi Steiner

Fair Catch by Kandi Steiner is now live!

As if things aren’t already tough enough as the only girl on a college football team, Coach had to go and assign Zeke Collins as my roommate.

A cocky kick returner and my brother’s best friend who should have been ripped of that title years ago, he’s as infuriating as he is undeniably sexy.

I hate him, and for good reason — reason I won’t ever let him forget.

He thinks because we grew up together that it’s his role to protect me, but all he does is get in my way, make me look weak, and piss me off more.

I tell him I can handle myself, and I’m hell-bent on getting that point across to him and the rest of the nation watching the only girl in collegiate football.

The pressure doesn’t get to me. The scrutiny? I’m ready for.

But sharing very thin walls with Zeke Collins? I wasn’t prepared for that.

And the more we’re forced together, the harder it is to distinguish that pencil-thin line between hating him… and wanting him.

Fair Catch ticked off all the boxes for an enjoyable enemies-to-lovers, roommate romance. I loved the twist on this sports trope — Riley plays for a multigender football team! Add in the history that she and Zeke share with him being her brother’s best friend and acting like an overprotective brother himself, and Fair Catch is an instant page-turner.

Kandi Steiner always writes intriguing characters, heroes and heroines that are easy to root for. She also has a great way of giving her heroes a vulnerable side, and I loved getting to know more about Zeke. There is so much more to him than meets the eye, and once Riley gets over her disdain for her brother’s overprotective best friend, their relationship truly blossoms.

Kandi Steiner is an Amazon Top 5 bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.”

She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, planning her next adventure, or pole dancing (yes, you read that right). She enjoys live music, traveling, playing with her fur babies and soaking up the sweetness of life.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Badge and the Bad Boy by Lena Hendrix

★ ☆ THE BADGE AND THE BAD BOY BY LENA HENDRIX IS 𝗔𝗩𝗔𝗜𝗟𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗪 ☆★

“I loved that after the swoony, steamy, romantic elements of Lena’s first series, we got a tension filled romantic suspense that had all those things that she’s known for, but with an added bonus of keeping the reader on the edge of their seat.”

𝙀𝙭𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙄 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙𝙣’𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜:

1. Staring at how nicely Evan Walker fills out his Wranglers.

2. Sneaking around after dark, hoping we don’t get caught.

3. Fantasizing about a life with a man who isn’t supposed to exist.

He’s a criminal, a dangerous man with connections to the Chicago mafia.

𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐈’𝐦 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐩.

Now we’re stuck hiding out in this quirky small town, and my eyes have a way of wandering.

𝐒𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬.

But the rules are clear––no connections to your former life. Ever.

We can’t afford to give into temptation. I’m only here on this Montana ranch until I can safely return to my job–and the promotion I’ve worked so hard for. And he’s only here to keep his little sister safe.

But as we’re forced to work together, I find that Evan is much more than I ever expected. He’s strong, hard-working.

Did I mention the Wranglers?

We’re drawn to each other in ways that are completely hopeless. I know I shouldn’t give in to his hot, smoldering looks or the way his lingering touch lights me up. It’s reckless.

𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞.

I can hide it, but the truth always has a way of coming out. In Tipp, Montana, secrets can save your life. The only cost is your heart.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Badge and the Bad Boy kicks off a great new series by Lena Hendrix. It has the same small-town feel that her Chikalu Falls series has, but a little more steam and an element of danger.

Val and Evan’s story hooked me from the prologue. Their paths crossed in a way that they probably never should have. Months later, they are both working at a Montana cattle ranch that is a cover for the witness protection program. But Val is there biding her time until her promotion goes through and Evan is there trying to build a new life after escaping from the Chicago mafia.

I loved the slow burn between Evan and Val. There is no way for a police officer and a former mobster to actually work, but these two are so good together. Evan has lived a hard life, and he doesn’t feel like he’s deserving of love. But Val brings a light to his life that he never imagined he’d be exposed to, and he becomes a better man because of it. But when the time comes for Val to return to her real life, is there any way that these two can make it work or will they have to part ways for good?

LH set up a great future for this series. I’m very intrigued to find out what Parker’s deal is, and if there is something that Gemma and Scotty are hiding!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Taste, by Melanie Harlow

TASTE, an all-new sexy, stranded enemies-to lovers rom com from USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling author Melanie Harlow is live now!

The last person on earth I want to be stranded with is Gianni Lupo.

But thanks to the blizzard of the century, I’m trapped in a roadside motel room with that cocky bastard for two straight days.

With one small bed.

Some women might thank Mother Nature for delivering a polar vortex that maroons them with six feet of solid muscle, those deep blue eyes, that sexy grin–but not me. I’ve known Gianni Lupo all my life, and he’s never brought me anything but bad luck and trouble.

So when the tension between us explodes with enough fiery heat to melt my icy defenses, I should have known what the disastrous end result would be–

A big fat plus sign.

After the snow melts, I’m left with more than just memories of the night we spent keeping each other warm. And he might be a rising star on the culinary scene, but he’s got no idea how to handle this bun in the oven.

He says he wants to do the right thing, but I’m not about to spend the rest of my life feeling like someone settled for me.

But just when I think I’ve got Gianni Lupo all figured out, he gives me a taste of the man he could be, of the family we could become, of the way he could love me if I let him.

I’m terrified of falling for him.

But one taste might be all it takes.

Excerpt

I sat at the foot of the bed and dialed Winnie’s number. She picked up immediately.
“Ellie?”
“Hey.”
“Thank God! You guys okay?”
“We’re fine.” I watched Gianni unwrap a candy bar and lean back against the headboard. “We found a motel with a vacancy.”
“You mean you’re staying in a motel room together?” she asked, loud enough for Gianni to overhear.
“Yeah. And there’s only one bed.”
She laughed. “How’s that going?”
“Fine.”
“You guys are getting along?”
Gianni made a lewd gesture involving his fist, his tongue, and his inner cheek. I gave him the finger. “As well you’d expect.”
“I can’t wait to hear about it.”
“We’re going to try to get out of here as soon as we can in the morning. I’ll let you know when we’re on the road.”
“Sounds good.” She laughed again. “Sleep tight.”
“Oh. We will.” I eyed the length of the bed. “We have no choice.”
After ending the call, I opened the Truth or Drink app on my phone and picked up my wine. “Ready to play?”
“Hit me.”
I scrolled through the options. “Do you want to play normal mode, party mode, or dirty mode?
Gianni looked at me like I was crazy. “Duh.”
I sighed and reached for my wine. “Okay, fine. I feel like I’m going to regret this, but dirty it is.”
“Can I take my pants off?”
“No. What’s your age range for a one night-stand?”
“Hmm.” Gianni thought for a moment.
“Please say at least eighteen.”
“No teenagers. I’ll say twenty to forty-five.”
“Forty-five? Really?”
He shrugged. “I think mature women are hot. But I can’t go near fifty because that’s my mom’s age and then it would be weird.”
“Right.”
“So what about you? Same question.”
“I’d have to say . . . thirty to forty.”
He looked offended. “Why thirty? You’re only twenty-three.”
And so was he, which was why I’d said it. “I know, but I think older men are just better in bed.” (I’d actually never been with anyone over twenty-eight.)
“In what way?”
“Just . . . more patient. More knowledgeable. More generous. Guys in their twenties think they’re all that just because they have younger bodies, especially if they’re—you know—well-endowed. But it’s not just the size of the boat. It’s definitely the motion of the ocean.”
He harrumphed. “You’ve been in the wrong boats.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh, Gianni and Ellie warmed my heart with their snarky banter, blizzard bang, and surprise pregnancy!

Everything about Taste was fantastic. A playboy with an ego. A hero and heroine with an established history as childhood friends. Close quarters. Sassy remarks. Loads of sexual energy. I just loved everything about the way Melanie Harlow wrote Ellie and Gianni as characters, as well as their steamy two-night-stand. And then all of the emotion that came after that! Both of them pining for the other. Ellie afraid to open up herself to Gianni because he never stays in one place for very long. Gianni feeling confused about his feelings for Ellie, feelings that he’s never had before.

And then that scene during the ultrasound! Oh, my heart melted. His protectiveness kicked in big time, and I adored his Grand Gesture and how far he went to convince Ellie that he wanted to be with her.

I must confess, I have not read Frenched (Ellie’s parents) or Forked (Gianni’s parents), but they have been on my TBR for quite some time. Now I really wish I had read those Melanie Harlow books because I think it would have made me love Ellie and Gianni that much more! I can’t wait for Felicity and Hutton’s book!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Sneaking Around With #34 by Piper Rayne

I have a reputation for being tight-lipped. You learn quick when you become a professional hockey player to be guarded with the media, so I’ve worked hard to cover up the mistakes of my youth.

But when I’m traded to the Florida Fury, where my ex-best friend is the starting right wing, I’m forced to confront my past. Ford and I have a lot of history, especially when it comes to his little sister, Imogen.

My heart still lurches in my chest when I see her.
My hands want to reach out and touch her.
My mouth wants to keep apologizing.

She’s the only woman who ever made me want more. But she’s also the one who fell victim to my most regrettable decision.

I’m not a believer in fate, but I must be back in her world for a reason. I’ve fought for everything I’ve gotten and I’m not backing down from what I know will be the best thing in my life.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Sneaking Around With #34 is another great Hockey Hotties book from Piper Rayne! This time around, we get an emotional second-chance romance between Warner, who has recently been traded to the Florida Fury, and Imogen, Ford’s sister (from #3). But this isn’t just a brother’s best friend romance. There is a lot of messy history between Warner, Ford and Gen that goes back to when they were in high school, when Warner and Ford were best friends and hockey teammates, and Warner and Gen fell in love.

Now that Imogen is working with the Fury, Warner sees his chance at getting her to forgive him for what went down between them a decade ago. But is she willing to have her heart shattered again?

I really enjoyed this story. Imogen really tried to keep Warner at a distance, but the fact is, she’s still in love with him even after all these years. I am usually pretty good at sniffing out a plot twist, but this one surprised me! I loved the anticipation building up to the scene where they finally hash things out, and the result was a great payoff!

After reading Ford’s book first, I really saw the resemblance between how he was trying to control keeping Imogen and Warner apart with how his own father tried to control his life.

The end of this book was very satisfying as Imogen and Warner get everything they’ve always wanted together. It warmed my heart 🙂

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

There is a lot to unpack between Kane and JoJo in Shattered Secrets. This story starts out over a Labor Day weekend when these two are just going at each other constantly. Their bickering, their banter, their hate… it’s electric. But then Kane literally saves JoJo’s life, and there is a whole new level of sizzle between them.

But then Kane married her sister, Alma, and they barely see each other for decades. More than 20 years later, JoJo tracks Kane down because she needs his legal help. Their snarky banter picks up where they left off all those years ago, but there’s an undercurrent of sexual attraction. And with Kane on the brink of divorcing Alma, what’s to stop them from acting on it? Well, the secret that JoJo’s been keeping from Kane and her sister will threaten to destroy several lives.

How did Kane end up being trapped in a marriage to Alma? What the heck led to that shocking cliffhanger? While I did suspect that *that* ending was where the story was going, I have so many questions about the how!

Much of Shattered Secrets is expos — there’s a lot of backstory and talk of history, but no major movement in the relationship between Kane and JoJo, and that’s why I’ve rated this 3 stars. Hopefully, that will be unpacked in the conclusion to this duet. Even though nothing happened between them, I found myself invested in this couple and rooting for them.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Only One Love is another great installment in the Only One series by Natasha Madison. (It’s also a spin-off/next generation book from her previous hockey series). Wilson (Brad) and Franny have a great connection right from the start, and NM makes this one-night-stand story become something spectacular. Seven books into this series, and I still look forward to the next couple when a new one comes out!

Wilson isn’t the guy that the media makes him out to be, and I loved that soft side that Franny brings out of him. She is a great heroine, strong, sure of what she wants… neither of them do relationships so of course that is exactly what this one night stand evolves into. But will two people who have shucked off love be able to navigate it successfully?

As with some of the other books in this series, the previous characters cross over, which is a great nod for longtime NM readers. Especially with all the crazy that goes along with Franny and Brad’s families.

This sexy, swoony book is one to indulge in!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh, my heart! SL Scott again delivers a powerful, angst-filled second chance romance that packs a whopper of an emotional punch. I was up into the wee hours of the morning reading because I could not put Best I Ever Had down!

Cooper and Story lived completely different lives, yet there are so many threads that connect them. Threads that they didn’t even know existed even after they met. Cooper lives the life of a prince, but in many ways, he is an emotional pauper, used as a pawn in his family’s game of success and fortune. I felt so badly for him during the scenes with his parents. They are such vile people, and they treated Story (and Cooper for that matter!) absolutely horribly.

Cooper and Story’s story was nothing short of amazing, despite the time, secrets, and unfortunate circumstances that pulled them apart. But just like they were destined to meet six years ago, when they cross paths again in New York City years later, it’s like no time has passed. Except that so much has actually happened to each of them. It was beautiful to see them pick up where they left off, talk through their issues, realized where they went wrong, and forge a new relationship with their little boy, Reed.

Cooper and Story loved fast, loved hard, and fell even harder. Best I Ever Had is full of angst and big emotions, but it has the most wonderful HEA! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Meet S.L. Scott
New York Times and USA Bestselling Author, S. L. Scott, was always interested in the arts. She grew up painting, writing poetry and short stories, and wiling her days away lost in a good book and the movies.
With a degree in Journalism, she continued her love of the written word by reading American authors like Salinger and Fitzgerald.

She was intrigued by their flawed characters living in picture perfect worlds, but could still debate that the worlds those characters lived in were actually the flawed ones.
This dynamic of leaving the reader invested in the words, inspired Scott to start writing with emotion while interjecting an underlying passion into her own stories.

Living in the capital of Texas with her family, Scott loves traveling and avocados, beaches, and cooking with her kids. She’s obsessed with epic romances and loves a good plot twist. She dreams of seeing one of her own books made into a movie one day as well as returning to Europe. Her favorite color is blue, but she likens it more toward the sky than the emotion. Her home is filled with the welcoming symbol of the pineapple and finds surfing a challenge though she likes to think she’s a pro.

EXCERPT
“I like the sneaky workings of your brilliant mind.” The Prince tugs the Pickle deli hat low on his head, almost obscuring those devilish eyes.
We cross the kitchen to the back door, Rachel trailing behind.
He tugs it open and peers out. “Which way?”
I point down the alley. “Head to that street, then to the right two blocks. The photographers are headed the other way.”
He turns to grin at me. “You’re really saving me here. Can I kiss you?”
I take a step back. “Uh. No.”
“Damn. I never like to leave a beautiful girl unkissed. Handshake then?”
I hold mine out. “Sure.”
He grips my palm and my whole body feels electrified, like he carries a charge. I stare at my hand after he lets it go.
He touches the hat brim, and then he’s gone.
Rachel peers out the door. “Awww, Sunny, why didn’t you kiss him?” She crosses her arms over her green deli apron. “I could have been your waiting lady or something.”
I push the door closed. “If he kisses every girl he sees, he doesn’t sound like happily-ever-after material.”
Rachel kicks out her hip. “He didn’t ask to kiss ME.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review

Pickle cousin Sunny Packwood finds her prince in this new Pickle series book. Royal Pickle is absolutely charming!

Prince Leopold needs to find a bride or be forced to marry one of his father’s choosing. He’s been sleeping his way around Europe and America when he stumbles into the deli Sunny and Grammy Alma run in Brooklyn — literally running from the paparazzi. He’s smitten by Sunny, especially since she doesn’t know who he is nor does she care. A few hours later, unable to forget the kindness she showed him, Leo thinks that Sunny can solve his problem and he proposes marriage.

The connection between Sunny and Leo is so great. I loved how these two got to know one another, and how they overcame the cultural differences. Especially when Leo takes American colloquialisms so literally. Their mutual attraction and fondness quickly grows into instalove. Go along for the ride as Sunny — who feels stuck in her life — travels to this small, little-known European country and gets the royal treatment as the prince’s fiancee. Well, kinda. There is family drama since the King does not approve of the American his son has chosen, and a whole lot of misunderstanding that threatens to come between the bride and groom’s royal wedding.

There are a few scenes with Sunny’s cousins, the Pickle brothers, towards the end of the book when the wedding madness takes place. But the bulk of this story takes place at Leo’s castle, so the supporting characters we get to know well are his sisters, Lilli and Octavia. I enjoyed those two girls so much, and really hope that this series gets a spinoff to include them!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Because You’re Mine by S.A. Clayton

NEW RELEASE
Release Date: February 21

Quinn can’t see a way out of this mess.

Her uncle just passed away, leaving her his struggling pub and she’s fighting to keep her head above water.

The only bright spot of her days is when Wes comes in.

Wes, the boy that she had a crush on in high school and who just moved back to town.

When Wes asks her out, she wonders if she can really handle a new relationship on top of everything else on her plate.

Wes can’t stay away.

He just got back to town and has been stopping by Quinn’s pub every night for a chance to see the feisty woman that he’s always had a crush on.

When he sees how stressed she is, all he wants to do is help, but Quinn turns him down.

When Wes goes behind her back to help, will Quinn be able to forgive him or will Wes lose the girl of his dreams?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Because You’re Mine was a quick hit — it took me about an hour during a car ride to read the whole thing — and a steamy friends-to-lovers story.

Quinn and Wes kind of circled each other back in high school. She runs the local bar where he hangs out, and he finally asks her out after showing up night after night. But she has a lot on her plate with trying to keep the bar afloat, and puts Wes off at first. Just as they start dating, Wes makes a business decision that has major effects on Quinn. Will she see that he had her best interest in mind because she belongs to him and him to her?

I enjoyed the flirtation between Wes and Quinn, and how he was just there as a support for so long. It kind of bothered me a bit how they went from a first kiss to fooling around so quickly, just because I liked the development of their relationship and wanted to see more first before it got that physical. But despite that, I enjoyed the way this story unfolded.

This is the first book I’ve read by SA Clayton, and I will definitely keep her on my radar.

Meet S.A. Clayton

S.A. Clayton lives in a small town outside of Toronto, Canada with her husband of five years and her scary large collection of books that seem to take over every room.
She has worked on both sides of the publishing industry, both in a bookstore and for actual publishing companies. Although she loved both for different reasons, she found that writing was her true passion and has spent the last few years breaking into the industry as best she can.
She is a lover of all things romance and began her writing journey in her late twenties. Since then, she has immersed herself in the romance genre and couldn’t be happier.
When she’s not writing or reading, she enjoys binging a great Netflix show (Stranger Things anyone?), baking (because who doesn’t love cookies!) and spending time with her family.
