Oh Wow. I wish I could give The Coldest Winter more than 5 stars. This book is so much more than a forbidden romance between a student-teacher and one of the pupils in her high school English class. It is a wonderful exploration of loss, grief, drowning in sadness, depression, life changes, and so much more.

Starlet meets Milo on her 21st birthday at a frat party — hours after she walked in on her boyfriend cheating on her the night she thought he was going to propose. That chance encounter, that one-night-stand, changed both of their lives forever. Starlet was… well, a shining star… for Milo. A warm beacon of light in a dark, low time of his life.

And as much as Star lifted up Milo, he had just as much of an impact on her life. Things get so rocky between them at one point, but they both grow into the people they are supposed to be because of their relationship with each other. And it’s a beautiful thing.

Worth the Chance is a fun and feisty enemies-to-lovers story with a ton of witty banter between Spencer and Abigail. They pretty much can’t stand each other, but they have an alcohol-fueld romp the night of the baby shower for her best friend and his best friend. (Who are the couple from book 1; I didn’t read that, but did not feel like I was missing any backstory.)

A few months later, someone is threatening to leak the naughty video Abigail and Spencer accidentally made that night, and he thinks it’s best for them both if she moves in with him until things blow over. The forced vacation is not ideal, as she keeps reminding him, but Abigail begins to soften around Spencer when she sees how great he is with his daughter Hadley; a daughter that the press doesn’t know exists. It took a lot for Spencer to let Abigail into his sanctuary and be a part of Hadley’s life, and it pays off for him because Abigail and Hadley begin to develop a wonderful friendship on their own.

I thought this story progressed nicely through the different stages of Spencer and Abigail’s relationship. I felt their feelings for one another change and grow, and I loved being along for the ride as they and Hadley became a family unit.

Worth the Chance is the first book I’ve read by Evey Lyon, and I’m so glad I took the chance on it! I definitely want to check out Hudson and Piper’s story (book 1) and look forward to Ford’s story in the future!

Southpaw is a spicy enemies-to-lovers romance between a lefty pitcher with a mental block and the coach’s daughter/his roommate’s sister. Jensen needs help getting out of his own way, and Sutter needs to redo her mater’s thesis paper as a psychology student. She reluctantly convinces him to give her a week to work with him on “mental training” — when all is said and done, will he be able to score big on the field and with the girl?

I loved how Sutter was always just *there* in Jensen’s apartment because she used to live there and how her constant appearances aggravated him. “I have a key” becomes a running joke between them — and in the end, Sutter’s key opened up a lot more than just the apartment door. Jensen is a really relatable hero — I loved the vulnerability he showed. I thought that Sutter was a bit bratty and entitled at times, but I did warm up to her eventually. (It just took me a bit! HA!)

When I read The Girl in the Front Row, I really, really hoped that Kelsey Kingsley would write Tarryn and Connor’s story. Sibling’s best friend stories are one of my favorites, and everything about Tarryn and Connor’s story checked off all the boxes for me.

This book starts off as enemies-to-lovers, but what is really simmering underneath is hate fueled by years of unrequited love. It’s obvious to Connor’s teen daughter, Sammy, that they are head over heels for one another way before it’s obvious to Connor and Tarryn.

The Hero in Her Story is a beautiful slow burn, friends-to-lovers, celebrity/average Joe romance. KK really took the time to develop the friendship between Connor and Tarryn as they shifted from antagonizing one another to becoming so much more.

Drew and Harper knew each other growing up, and unbeknownst to each other, were crushing on one another hard back. The summer of her sister’s wedding, they embark on a no-strings fake relationship… but of course, feelings get involved and two people who didn’t want a commitment find themselves in a very real relationship and they aren’t sure what to do about it.

This book was cute, and a quick read. But I wish there was more backstory, especially considering the title. It took six summers for Drew and Harper to fall in love, but we barely got to see their relationship evolve over those years. I felt a bit let down by that because I thought the concept was great when I first read the title. I think I would have been shipping Harper and Drew more had I seen that progress of their relationship rather than the rush of that last summer.

Well, the first meeting between Hunter and Ophelia is definitely one to remember — she thinks he’s about to attack her on the street in the middle of the night and clocks him.

The chemistry between the characters grows from there, and I enjoyed this brother’s best friend story very much. Hunter and Ophelia are both very focused on their careers. He is finally free from his family business and can focus on playing baseball after college; she is trying to pick up her life again after losing her job with a fashion house and gets a second chance by designing clothes for a small boutique. Hunter and Ophelia start out as friends and then become more, supporting each other along the way as they fall in love. But when Ophelia finds out that Hunter being able to live out his dream came at the expense of hers, will she be able to forgive him?

While I thought that Ophelia drew a hard line with Hunter during The Conflict over something that wasn’t totally his fault, I was glad that it was resolved rather quickly, and these two got a HEA after all.

Claire Kingsley wraps up the Dirty Martini Running Club with Nora’s story, and it was well worth the wait!

Dex is a single dad with a surly tween who doesn’t have much free time between raising his daughter, Riley, and running his tattoo shop. But the broody hulk of a man may be just what sex columnist Nora needs in her life, now that she’s living in suburbia and her besties have all married off. Since neither one of them are interested in a committed relationship, a no-strings fling lets them both scratch those sexy itches. Naturally, Nora and Dex fall into a relationship before either of them realizes it. And suddenly, the woman who didn’t want a commitment and the man with zero free time find themselves flirting with the idea of spending forever with the other.

Dex and Nora’s relationship was certainly HOT (especially thanks to awesome narrators Stephen Dexter and Vanessa Edwin). Who knew that chaperoning a middle school dance was such great foreplay??? However, I also really loved the friendship that developed between Dex’s daughter, Riley, and Nora. It felt genuine and stood on its own so that Riley was a full character herself and not just a prop to make Dex the sexy single dad next door.

Some of my favorite highlights: The bounce house at Dex’s family BBQ was hilarious… the friendship between Nora/Everly/Hazel/Sophie is wonderful and the husband gang makes me smile every time they pop up… Riley and Nora’s friendship was adorable and so true and honest. It made me happy to see that Riley had Nora step up for her in ways that her mom never did!

I always want to smack whichever character storms off during a miscommunication without letting the other one explain… but the grovel/reunion was a wonderful, swoon-worthy payoff!
