Sunny Shelly’s Review: Hooked, by Joanne Schwehm

Title: Hooked

Series: Prescott Series #5

Author: Joanne Schwehm
Genre: Standalone Contemporary Romance
Release Date: June 4, 2019
Blurb

I love my life. As owner and chef at one of the hottest restaurants, I know how to keep things sizzling in and out of the kitchen. What more could I ask for? But I’ll tell you what I didn’t ask for… a klutzy, curly-haired woman slamming into me with a unicorn cake. Yes, you read that right—a damn cake decorated to look like the mythical creature bathed in every color of the rainbow.

What could be worse, right? I’ll tell you. My brother hired her to be my pastry chef. You’d think that would be my biggest problem, but that was just the tip of the iceberg.

Aside from her being one of the clumsiest women I’ve ever met, she turns me on like no other woman has. She tastes sweeter than anything she creates, and we make a great team in and out of the bedroom… I mean kitchen.

When we first met, I worried my restaurant wouldn’t survive her. Now I worry that my heart won’t.

I never wanted to fall in love, but sometimes life isn’t all unicorns and rainbows.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I was absolutely HOOKED on Josh and Gia! They are fresh and funny, their antics are hysterical, their chemistry is undeniable and their story was a page-turner, from start to finish. She was the last person that Josh wanted in his kitchen, but Gia is exactly what he needs in his life.

Hooked is book #4 in the Prescott series; I have not read the others and did not have any issues following along, so it is a true standalone.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Blurb:
I needed to get away.
My ex was getting married.
So, I left.

The English countryside was a picture-perfect escape.
The dashing stranger an even better one.
And what started as a chance encounter quickly became more.

He promised to show me how to live, how to feel alive and forget a past best forgotten.
He made me believe things could be different.
That was until I found out who he was . . .

He was Oliver Blackthorn.
The 16th Earl of Lockhart. Thirty-third in line to the throne.
And a liar.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

I’m with the other reviewers who had mixed feelings about Deceit. Oliver and Addison’s entire relationship is built on the lie that he doesn’t tell her who he actually is. Okay, I knew that from the blurb and was okay with that diving into the book. Despite the fact that he was keeping something major from her — it would have a huge impact on the property she’s trying to sell on behalf of her family’s company — I liked the relationship that was developing between Olly and Addy. They were cute, they were sexy, they were flirty.

But after Olly and Addy’s relationship implodes, and she just shut him out completely without giving him the chance to explain, the book kind of fell apart for me. The rest of the story dragged as she tries to move on with another guy, lying to herself the entire time that she loves Maxwell. (I did love, however, that Olly remained faithful to Addison during that time as he tried to win her back.)

The book culminates with all of Oliver’s family secrets finally being explained, and she understands why he lied as he did. But by that point, I wasn’t as enthralled by the story anymore was just reading to get to the HEA that I knew was coming for these two.

Ava Harrison is a new-to-me author, and even though I have mixed feelings on how much I liked Deceit, I liked enough of it to check out books from this author in the future. I received and advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt: Crashing Together, by Lyssa Cole

Crashing Together
Lyssa Cole
Publication date: May 30th 2019
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

It’s an age old story….

A summer fling….

A temporary thing…

His name was Cole and I couldn’t resist him. He was everything a girl could want in a summer romance. A hot, tanned, surfer with blonde hair and blue eyes… oh and let’s not forget about all those muscles and the six-pack I couldn’t stop staring at.

We agreed to just sex. Lots of sex. Lots of fun. No titles, no relationship, and certainly no love.

Until the sex started to feel like something else.

Something more..

Something way more…

But for him?

It was still just sex.

Until it wasn’t.

Until everything we didn’t mean to build unraveled in a heap of secrets, lies, and broken trust.

We came crashing together but will our summer fling survive the waves?

EXCERPT:

Addi

“You’re in over your head and you know it.” Leigh lifts her frozen margarita to her lips and eyes me over the sugar rim.

“I am not.” I roll my eyes and look around the smoky bar. I don’t know why I even let Leigh talk me into coming here. It’s dark, a little sketchy, and the millions of fog machines fill the place with smoke so thick you’d think they allowed cigarettes in here.

“You’re in denial, Addi. You can’t even look at me.”

I snap my eyes back to her. “It’s hard to see with all this smoke.” I wave my hand around for dramatic effect. I’m so in denial but she doesn’t need to know that.

Leigh laughs and rolls her eyes. “Yeah okay girl, whatever you say.”

“The drinks are delicious though.” I raise my glass before bringing to my lips to it, licking the sugar rim.

It’s as if a storm is brewing, ready to take over at any minute, inside my belly. Awake at night, I stare at the ceiling as it flips and twists, growing worse.

The storm named Cole.

He fills my bloodstream, running through my veins, and follows me everywhere I go. No matter what I do, I can’t stop it.

I was a fool thinking I could and I’m a fool now as I sit here and let it happen.

I’m falling hopelessly in love with Cole.

It’s unreal, consuming, and lighting me on fire from within.

I’ve never felt anything like it before. The more I see him, the more I want. And Leigh is absolutely correct.

I’m in over my fucking head.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Hot Mess by R. Linda

Title: Hot Mess
Series: Messy Love #1
Author: R. Linda
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: May 27, 2019
Blurb
There’s always that one girl who has all these dreams, yet she can’t reach them because she’s constantly tripping over her own two feet.
That’s me. I’m that girl. The unorganized, chaotic, hot mess.

I’m the struggling artist who refuses to give up my love for pizza just because society constantly shoves thin, perfectly toned bodies in my face saying that’s what women are supposed to look like.

Oh, and I’m filthy rich. On paper anyway. I can’t touch my trust fund just yet, so to get those nasty debt-collectors off my back I rent out the snazzy mansion my parents left me.

Of course it has to be Tate Montgomery who moves in—the super sexy celebrity with three million, five hundred and twenty-six followers on Instagram. And of course I have to be the paint-covered walking disaster who falls for said famous tenant.

The problem? Tate and I, we’re not compatible…at all. He’s arrogant. I’m stubborn. It’s a train wreck waiting to happen.

Yet, I end up kissing him anyway.

Told you I was a mess.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Hot Mess was a fun, flirty romcom that I easily read in one day, between my lunch break at work and reading before bed. Tate and Wren are adorable, and it takes a while for them to get together so there’s a nice build-up. Wren was quirky and fun and took no BS from Tate, even if he is a famous model. And the girl has a standing pizza delivery. How could you not love that?

I had some issues with Tate’s faux girlfriend Rachel. As a bigger woman myself, I hate fat-shaming in books. There could have been other ways to make Rachel a royal B without calling Wren names because she had a curvier body. And does the reader ever know what name Rachel had programmed into Tate’s phone for Wren? Did I miss it??

Overall, this was a cute story with zero angst that ends with a HFN. I’ve read some other books by R. Linda before that were misses for me, but Hot Mess was a hot hit. I really liked Wren’s friend Eve, and would love to see her get a story! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Million Dollar Devil, by Katy Evans

Million Dollar Devil by Katy Evans

Release Date: May 28, 2019

Evans-MillionDollarDevil-28091-CV-FT-V3.jpg

Million Dollar Devil, a devilish contemporary romance where big-city sophistication meets carnal hunger from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katy Evans.

Heir apparent to her father’s company, Lizzy Banks needs a man. The perfect man. But when the rich “fundbabies” she usually rubs shoulders with prove impossible to hire, she takes a chance on a raw beast of a man salvaged from the wreckage of a bar brawl.

James Rowan earns a modest income as a YouTube daredevil, but he can’t refuse Lizzy’s million dollar deal. As she polishes his rough edges, creating a sophisticated gentleman fit for the highest circles of society, not only does she bring out the perfect man—it’s like she’s making the man of her dreams. How can she resist?

Though Lizzy loves seeing James in his clothes—and out of them—he isn’t the kind of man you bring home to Daddy. Her father’s disapproval and the pressure of the campaign have her eyeing the straight and narrow, but Lizzy’s finding it awfully hard to resist the devil on her shoulder…

A stand-alone, contemporary romance.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

Ugh. I find Katy Evans books to be hit or miss for me. And while the blurb for Million Dollar Devil completely hooked me, I didn’t love the story itself. I liked it. I just didn’t love it.

I really liked the idea of the reversed roles in this Pygmalion story, but the overall execution of Elizabeth falling in love with her creation, James, dragged for me. The contrast between menswear exec Elizabeth and YouTube daredevil Jimmy was great in terms of how this romance needed to build. Her entire career is on the line with the success of presenting James as the new face of Banks LTD. But when Jimmy’s past is threatened to be exposed by a rival, how far will he go to protect Lizzy’s future?

There are some nice moments between Lizzy and Jimmy, and I think I liked them better than Elizabeth and James. But they just didn’t have “IT” for me in terms of absolutely loving them as a couple. And I really wanted her to grow a backbone where her dad was concerned.

Overall, this story would be enjoyable for Katy Evans readers and lovers of the trope. It just didn’t pack the punch for me that I was hoping for.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt:

He has a face that—until now—only existed in my dreams. Hard jaw, chiseled to perfection. Firm, plush, kissable lips. Sharp, pristine blue eyes that feel like lasers zeroing in on me. He catches my gaze, and the devil’s smile suddenly playing on his lips is worth a million bucks.

That’s exactly how much it cost me. What this guy cost me. I would’ve paid so much more.

It’s like he’s the only man in the room. Like he belongs here. Confidence oozes out of his every pore. Masculinity envelops him as perfectly as his custom black suit. He walks like he owns the place. My heart beats harder and harder for him.

I can’t believe I got him to agree to this.

Women are vying for his attention. His moves are smooth. Sophisticated. Elegant.

“An autograph?” a young woman asks shyly.

He takes the notepad and pen she extends and scribbles his name, his voice low and rough. “There you go.” Beneath all that polish is his raw masculine energy. The determination that brought him here.

“James . . .” I halt him before we go any farther. “Whatever happens . . .”

He looks at me. A thousand words lingering in his look. “I know.”

But does he? I’ve fallen in love with my own creation. I polished a diamond, and now it’s flawless. Perfect. But it’s not mine to keep.

He is not mine to keep.

This elite world he’s about to join isn’t one he was born into. These fans only know him because of me. His place at the top? That’s not where I found him.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I have been a fan of Samantha Lind’s Indianapolis Eagles series from the start, so I LOVED the idea of a catch-all book that shows the couple’s five years later. Who is having babies? Who is expanding their family? Who is retiring? This was a great look at these characters years down the road.

We also got to meet a few new couples, like the Eagles’ goalie coach and his wife, and their daughter, who is a physical therapist. Sparks fly between Julia and new Eagles player Beckett when she does her dad a favor and works the new guy into her schedule. They will be the couple features in SL’s new spin-off series. Is dating the coach’s daughter ever a good idea?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Written With Regret, by Aly Martinez

WWR - BT banner.jpg

Written With Regret, the first in an all-new emotional duet from USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez, is available now!

WW Regret FOR WEB

Every little girl dreams of the fairytale. The one where the white knight rushes in to save her from the clutches of evil. They fall in love, have babies, and live happily ever after.

By that definition, my life should have been a fairytale too.

When I was eight years old, Caven Hunt saved me from the worst kind of evil to walk the Earth. It didn’t matter that I was a kid. I fell in love with him all the same.

But that was where my fairytale ended.

Years later, a one-night stand during the darkest time imaginable gave us a little girl. It was nothing compared to the pitch black that consumed me when I was forced to leave her with Caven for good.

At the end of every fairytale, the happily-ever-after is the one thing that remains consistent. It wasn’t going to be mine, but there hadn’t been a night that passed where I hadn’t prayed that it would be hers.

I owed Caven my life.

However, I owed that innocent child more.

And that included ripping the heart from my chest and facing her father again.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The prologue to Written With Regret sucked me in. And I really didn’t want to like Hadley for what she did by dumping her baby on Cavan and then taking off. But this story is so intense and sad and gripping, I just devoured it. I felt so deeply what both characters were going through. They are connected well beyond the one-night stand that produced their daughter. But I hate that Cavan doesn’t know HOW deep that connection actually goes. He is so consumed by guilt over the events of his past, and it takes him so much to move forward and let himself be happy. Hadley’s secret threatens to tear all of that apart.

Is it June yet? Because I need to know how the rest of this story goes! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt:

Life had never been easy for me. Chaos had been following me like a dark cloud, looming and hovering, casting its shadow far and wide despite how bright the path in front of me should have appeared. After growing up the way I had, where happiness had been more of a privilege than a choice, I knew better than to believe that that moment would be anything other than fleeting.

And one second later, the universe proved me right.

I opened the door to see who had rung the bell—a cursory check revealed an empty hallway.

And that’s when I heard it: the sound that changed not only my entire life in the present, but my life for all future days to come.

At first, it was just a grunt, but as if that baby could feel my gaze, the minute my eyes made contact, it let out a sharp cry.

Confusion hit me like a lightning bolt, sending me back a step. I used the door frame for balance as I took in the yellow blanket with a hole only big enough to reveal a pale-pink face.

“What the fuck?” I breathed. Glancing around the hall, I waited for someone to jump out and start laughing. When no one spoke up to issue a punchline, I took a step closer and repeated, “What the fuck?”

I was utterly unable to process the absurdity in front of me.

Of course, I knew the facts.

It was a baby.

On my doorstep.

Alone.

But the why in that equation was glaringly absent.

“Uhhh,” Ian drawled, peering over my shoulder. “Why is there a kid at your door?”

“I have no idea,” I replied, staring down at the squirming and now-screaming bundle. “It was just there when I opened the door.”

Ian shoved me to the side so he could stand beside me. “You’re shitting me, right?”

“Does it look like I’m shitting you?”

He looked from me to the baby, then back again. “How did it get there?”

We were two incredibly smart men who had created a technology empire out of nothing. But, clearly, a baby was too big for either of us to wrap our minds around.

I swept an arm out and pointed to the kid. “I have no clue, but I’m assuming it didn’t catch a cab.”

A light of understanding hit his eyes. He moved first, stepping over the crying baby and hurrying down the hall, searching around the corner near the elevator before returning alone.

The party continued behind me, but even with the door open, the loud chatter was no match for the ear-piecing cries happening in that hallway.

Veronica suddenly appeared beside me, her body going solid as she stammered out. “Is that…a baby?”

“Back up,” I urged, throwing my arm out to block her path as though the infant were going to suddenly morph into a rabid animal. And let’s be honest, I knew nothing about babies. Anything was possible.

Ian dropped to his knees, scooping up the wailing child. Meanwhile, I stood there like a gawking idiot, paralyzed by a weight I didn’t yet understand.

“Call the pol—” He stopped abruptly and reached into the top of the child’s blanket. “Oh shit,” he whispered, his wide, panic-filled eyes flashing to mine.

“What?” I asked, stepping toward him to get a better look at the kid. Only it wasn’t that tiny baby cradled in his arms that made my heart stop and bile rise in my throat.

There, in my best friend’s hand, was a folded piece of notebook paper that had been tucked into the child’s blanket. From the looks of it, the paper was unremarkable in every sense of the word. Blue lines, white spaces, hanging remnants from where it had been haphazardly ripped from a spiral bound notebook. Even the crease was crooked. But it was my name scrawled on the outside in messy, black ink that made it the most remarkable paper in existence.

I snatched it from his hand and, with blood roaring in my ears, opened it.

Caven,

I’m sorry. I never meant for this to happen. This is our daughter Keira. I’ll love her forever. Take care of her the way I can’t.

Written with regret,

Hadley

The hall began to spin, my head feeling like every ounce of blood had been drained from my body. The thundering in my ears faded and the loud chatter of my guests, who were suddenly aware that something was happening at the door, roared to life.

And then the chaos finally found me all over again—the past playing out in my head like my life flashing before my eyes.

I sucked in a deep breath and looked at the baby in his arms. The blanket had fallen off its head just enough to reveal a patch of fine hairs, more orange than its mother’s red.

“Call the police,” I declared, turning on a toe and walking back into my apartment, leaving Ian standing in the hall with Hadley’s child.

Shoving through the crowd of concerned onlookers, I headed straight to the bottles of liquor lining the counter. I didn’t bother with ice or even a glass. I threw back that bottle of vodka, hoping like hell the burn of the alcohol could numb the panic coursing through my veins.

Through it all, that baby never stopped crying.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Faking Ms. Right, by Claire Kingsley

Title: Faking Ms. Right
Author: Claire Kingsley
Genre: Contemporary Rom/Com
Release Date: May 28, 2019

“When I kissed you last night, I wasn’t pretending.”

Everly Dalton is a walking, talking, martini-drinking dating disaster. Forget kissing frogs. She can’t even get past the first date. But at work, she’s a badass—the longest-running assistant billionaire Shepherd Calloway has ever had. Her coworkers wonder how she handles the big bad wolf—and never gets bit.

Shepherd Calloway isn’t interested in being anyone’s sugar daddy. Tired of women who only want him for his money, he swears off dating, determined to focus on running his empire. Until his gold-digging ex hits him where it hurts, putting him in a difficult position.

His solution—to have Everly pose as his live-in girlfriend—is obviously crazy. But the timing is uncanny. It just so happens Everly needs a favor from her boss—a big and awkward one—and this could ensure everyone gets what they want.

Besides, Everly can totally survive a few months of faux romance.

Except there’s a problem. Shepherd is supposed to be a single-minded, unemotional robot boss. Not an actual human with a heart and morning wood. Between the awkward bed-sharing and tingly fake dates, lines are blurring. And as Everly gets to know the real Shepherd, she discovers there’s more to the man behind the bank account.

And faking it gets all too real.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh, Shephard! Claire Kingsley promised a swoon-worthy alpha hero in a fake relationship romcom, and that is what she delivered with Shep and Everly!

Shep is so emotionally stunted, so it meant that much more when he started falling for his assistant. I love that it kind of snuck up on him all at once. Everly is the perfect quirky, upbeat heroine, and she perfectly balances the cool, indifferent workaholic. The fact that he lets himself be so vulnerable with her was so, so endearing.

I have been following Everly’s Dating Disasters in CK’s newsletter for the past few months, and it was all leading up to this perfect romance with her boss… So it made Shep and Everly falling for one another that much sweeter. And boy, does this couple sizzle! The scene in the car was one of the hottest I’ve ever read from CK! Wowza!

There are lots of Easter eggs hidden throughout the story for CK’s longtime readers, and it was fun realizing what they were as I went along. I really hope that there’s a story in the works for Nora and Hazel, and it was fun meeting Cameron, who is an upcoming CK heroine. I can’t wait! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

“This story was perfection from the very beginning and a MUST READ book! I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this to anyone and everyone! Claire Kingsley had the perfect mix have laughs, steamy and romance.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Hammered by Pippa Grant & Lili Valente

Title: Hammered
Authors: Pippa Grant & Lili Valente
Genre: Romantic Comedy

 Release Date: May 28, 2019

Blurb

I didn’t mean to kidnap the groom. It was an accident.

Mostly…

At least I didn’t take much time to plan it. It was more of a spur of the
moment kidnapping. Does that count?

One minute, the town’s bad boy is standing at the altar about to marry the
world’s most evil kindergarten teacher. The next, he’s passed out in my Vespa
sidecar with his bride hot on our tail.

But I didn’t have a choice! I couldn’t stand by and watch Jace O’Dell be
blackmailed into a loveless marriage. And besides, what’s a little kidnapping
between friends?

Okay, so maybe we’re not just friends…

And maybe I can’t quit thinking about that night at his bar when he closed up
early and had me on the rocks.

And maybe this crazy stunt is going to blow up in both of our faces.

If it does, I’m blaming the moonshine.

Even though the only thing I’m hammered on when it comes to Jace is
love—straight up, no chaser.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

This is the second book in the Happy Cat collaboration series from PG and LV, and is the story of Jace and Olivia. There’s always been something simmering between them, but there are a lot of stops and starts and they never really get on the same page.

Olivia takes things into her own hands when Jace’s manipulative ex comes back into the picture.

This book is fun with a quirky cast of characters, but I didn’t love it as much as I adored Hosed. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Pippa Grant
Pippa Grant is a stay-at-home mom and housewife who loves to
escape into sexy, funny stories way more than she likes perpetually cleaning
toothpaste out of sinks and off toilet handles. When she’s not reading,
writing, sleeping, or trying to prepare her adorable demon spawn to be
productive members of society, she’s fantasizing about chocolate chip cookies.

Lili Valente
Lili Valente has slept under the stars in Greece, eaten
dinner at midnight with French men who couldn’t be trusted to keep their mouths
on their food, and walked alone through Munich’s red light district after dark
and lived to tell the tale.

These days you can find her writing in a tent beside the sea, drinking coconut
water and thinking delightfully dirty thoughts.

About Beach Wedding Weekend:

You’re invited to a sunny beach town

for a witty, heartwarming romance.

When Brody broke up with Paige and went to Europe, he suggested that someday, they’d pick up right where they left off. A hopeless romantic, she believed him.

But when they meet again, Brody’s dating a gorgeous actress.

They’re all going to attend the same wedding, and Paige plans to win Brody back. She even enlists her best friend’s brother, Aiden, to pretend to date her and make her ex jealous. A breezy, charming restaurant owner, Aiden actually avoids serious relationships, but as a fake boyfriend, he’s perfect.

As old friends and exes take part in wedding preparations and enjoy the beauty of the Florida coast, they begin to see themselves—and each other—in a new light.

This summer romance includes a free Hallmark original recipe for BBQ Brisket Tacos with Sunshine Slaw.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Beach Wedding Weekend is an enjoyable, quick, if not predictable, fake relationship romance. It’s presented by Hallmark, which is fitting, since it follows the formula as the Hallmark Channel movies I love!

There’s a nice rapport between Paige and Aiden. Their relationship starts out as a fake one as she’s hoping to put on a brave front in front of her ex. But as they always do, feelings get involved and things get messy and complicated. This is a fluffy book easily read in a single sitting, low-angst and not too deep. It’s a perfect escape for an afternoon by the pool with a cocktail.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

About Rachel Magee:

Rachel wrote her first novel when she was twelve and entered it into a contest for young author/illustrators. Unfortunately, the judges weren’t impressed with her stick figures, so she dropped the dream of becoming a world-famous illustrator and stuck to spinning stories. When she’s not busy working on her latest book, she loves to travel with her family and friends. By far, her favorite destination is the beach, which tends to work its way into most of her stories. Between vacations, you can find her at home in The Woodlands, TX with her wonderful husband, their two adventurous kids and a couple of spirited pets.
