Sunny Shelly’s Review: Last Summer by Kerry Lonsdale

49348879_1141848542659953_8093648032865714176_n.png

From the Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Everything series comes a new novel of love, lies, and deceit.

Lifestyle journalist Ella Skye remembers every celebrity she interviewed, every politician she charmed between the sheets, and every socialite who eyed her with envy. The chance meeting with her husband, Damien; their rapid free fall into love; and their low-key, intimate wedding are all locked in her memory. But what she can’t remember is the tragic car accident that ripped her unborn child from her. Ella can’t even recall being pregnant.

Hoping to find the memories of a lost pregnancy that’s left her husband devastated and their home empty, Ella begins delving into her past when she’s assigned an exclusive story about Nathan Donovan, a retired celebrity adventurer who seems to know more about her than she does him. To unravel the mystery of her selective memory loss, Ella follows Nathan from the snowcapped Sierra Nevada to the frozen slopes of southeast Alaska. There she discovers the people she trusts most aren’t the only ones keeping secrets from her—she’s hiding them from herself. Ella quickly learns that some truths are best left forgotten.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

It was great… until it wasn’t.

Last Summer is a gripping tale of a woman with selective amnesia and the path she takes to recover her missing memories. And at the crux of it all is what happened last summer.

Ella wakes up in the hospital after a terrible car accident that caused her to miscarriage her son, with no memory of having been pregnant. There is a distance between Ella and her husband, Damien, and she can’t figure out why. He won’t tell her what led to the fight they had the night before her accident, or anything about her pregnancy. He’s devastated by the loss of their son, but Ella can’t figure out why since he didn’t want children.

When Ella gets called on assignment to take another crack at a celeb profile on adventurer Nathan, she jumps at the chance since she spent last summer with him. Why doesn’t she remember any of it? Who is Nathan to her? Why is he so familiar to her? Is Ella better off not remembering what happened last summer?

The story of these three characters was so interesting and unlike anything I’ve read before. Was Ella in love with Nathan? Did Damien know? As the story unfolded, I felt the pain of all three characters. Nathan’s grief over the death of his son and the guilt he carried. Ella for betraying her husband. Damien for losing his wife. Nathan for losing Ella a second time. I found it all fascinating.

So why three stars?? The last 15% was brutal. What was that ending? This story was completely gripping and had me enthralled…. up until the last few chapters. Then I kind of felt a bit disgusted by Ella and Damien’s actions and manipulations and the ending did not sit well with me at all.

Last Summer is definitely an entertaining read, but I can’t say that I was satisfied by the way the story wrapped up. I received an advanced copy via the publisher and NetGalley and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Other Side is a must-read! This is not a traditional romance, and deals with a dark subject matter: depression and suicide. But Toby’s journey is an emotional, dark one full of struggles. But the way he turned it all around is brilliant and uplifting, and it’s all at the hands of a blind woman who makes his heart beat.

This book is set up in three distinctive parts, and each section serves a purpose in propelling Toby’s story further.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

About the Author:

Some of my favorite things: reading, writing, the two coolest guys on the planet (my husband and son), my bicycle (my husband built it for me), Facebook (I’m fairly certain it’s an addiction at this point), iced coffee (hazelnut), and music (LOVE Sunset Sons, the 1975, Dredg, the xx, Balance and Composure, Teenage Bottlerocket, and 30 Seconds to Mars). I also love dreaming, which brings me to my next point. I have one bit of advice for anyone reading this … follow your dreams. It’s never too late. Get started today … heck get started RIGHT NOW! I wanted to write a book 20 years ago. Instead I waited. And waited. I should’ve been writing. But I didn’t. I don’t do regrets, because the past is just that, the past. But let me tell you there’s nothing in the world like achieving something you’ve dreamt about for years and years. So, get started. Make your dreams reality.

I love to hear from other readers. Send me a message or find me on Facebook (https://facebook.com/kimholdenauthor) and tell me what’s up in your reading world.

  • Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh, my heart! Where Forever Ends was a wonderful, heartbreaking story of two people who have suffered unimaginable loss finding love and solace and comfort in one another.

The story opens several months after Saylor’s husband suddenly dies, leaving her a young widow with a small son to raise. Needing to get away from all the memories of a life cut short, she moves several hours back home and in with her older brother, Easton, and reconnects with his best friend, Jase, who she used to have a crush on.

Jase understands the pain and anger and guilt that Saylor is carrying like nobody else. He’d also suddenly lost his girlfriend. What starts out as Jase being a shoulder to cry on and a comforting sound on the phone during those nights when Saylor can’t sleep gradually turns into something more. KS did a fantastic job of describing the guilt that Saylor felt for falling in love with Jase. How could she love him if she still loves her late husband? And Jase was all in from the get-go with Saylor and her son. That man has the patience and restraint of a saint!

There are so many emotions in this book, and the grieving process is well-written. I genuinely felt all that both characters were going through as their relationship develops. Saylor being afraid of moving on, and Jase realizing for the first time that he can see himself with someone besides Candace.

Where Forever Ends is the start of something absolutely beautiful. I just wish that the epilogue had been more of a HEA than a HFN. I would have loved to have gotten a glimpse of Jase, Socks and Knox — and any other little babies?!!?? — in the future.

This was the first book I’ve read by K. Street and I am most definitely hooked on this Maplewood Falls series. I can’t wait to read Easton’s book! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Out of the Blue, by Jess Bryant

Title: Out of the blue
Author: Jess Bryant
Genre: Contemporary Romance

They say that its only just before you die that you truly see what’s important.

Nick Sloan can vouch for that. After being shot in the line of duty and barely pulling through, he knows that his dream job of working SWAT in the big city isn’t the dream he should be chasing. No, when he was lying in that hospital bed, it wasn’t the badge that he thought about, it was her.

Kady Shaw never thought she would see him again but then he turned up, out of the blue. The man she’d loved. The man she’d thought she would spend the rest of her life with. The man that had shattered her heart when he’d chosen a promotion over their engagement. But all of a sudden he’s back in Fate, Texas, back in their small hometown, back and swearing that he’s going to win her back as well.

Can Nick convince her that he can be trusted with her heart again? Is there anything left of Kady’s heart to give? Or is a life tied to a man that will always put himself in danger to save others too much to ask of her?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Out of the Blue is a sweet second-chance novella, a story easily read in a single sitting.

Years ago, Nick left Kady behind for a job and never looked back. The heartbreak nearly destroyed her. Now, after nearly being killed, Nick realizes that what he wants and needs in his life is Kady, and is back home in their small Texas town and ready to grovel for forgiveness.

I enjoyed this sweet story. Kady really makes Nick work for it, and holds out on reconciling until the end. This is an enjoyable feel-good story perfect for reading during a lazy day at the pool.

The Accidental Girlfriend, an all-new hilarious romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Emma Hart is available now!

THE ACCIDENTAL GIRLFRIEND - DRAFT1 (1)

Top Tip: Don’t put out an online ad offering your services as a fake date. Someone will take you up on it.

And it won’t just be for one night.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how I ended up being Mason Jackson’s fake girlfriend.

He didn’t even want me to be. No—his sister was solely responsible for me being his date for his ten-year high school reunion.

Now, she’s responsible for telling his parents our relationship is real.

We have no choice. We have to act like this isn’t all a mistake, like it’s not all fake, like we’re totally, completely, utterly, head-over-heels in love with each other.

Simple, right?

Wrong.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Every time I think Emma Hart can’t possibly have a book funnier than her last, she proves me wrong! I went into Accidental Girlfriend a bit hesitantly, because I thought that another one of EH’s fake-relationship books, Four Day Fling, was damn perfect. How could this one possibly compare?

Well, it didn’t compare. The stories may be in the same general trope, but Accidental Girlfriend was pretty damn perfect itself. Lauren and Mason were lovable, and I laughed so hard out loud so many times reading the banter between these two!

You know the story: boy and girl fake date and catch feelings for one another. But neither wants a relationship, so they deny, deny, deny until one of them breaks. Sure, that sums up Lauren and Mason’s fake relationship, but this book is so worth reading for the nuances between them. And Mason’s crazy grandpa and Aunt Pru will definitely make it worth your while!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt:

“I’ve seen you eat nothing but junk. Are you one of those irritating people who can eat what they want and put on no weight?”

“Okay, first.” I held up one finger. “You look like you could walk into the cast of the Avengers, so don’t come at me with that. Also, I run. Every day. And I don’t always eat junk.”

“You run?” His eyebrows shot up.

“I don’t know if I should be insulted or not.”

“No, I just—you don’t look like a runner.”

“And you don’t look like Chris Hemsworth, but here you are on my sofa looking like a dark-haired Norse god,” I shot back. “What’s your point?”

He held up his hands, fighting another laugh, one that made his eyes shine. “Hey, I have a physical job. I rarely get to the gym, but I’m always moving.”

“Have you ever worked behind a bar? I’m not exactly running a call center back there. It never stops sometimes.”

“Do I look like I mix cocktails?”

Doing what he’d done just minutes before, I took a long, hard look at him, from head to toe.

It was a mistake.

If I were a sloth, I wouldn’t just climb him like a tree; I’d hang off him for a nap, too.

Lord, he was hot.

Focus, Lauren.

“No,” I said. “You look like the lone wolf who waits for the cocktail-drinking girls to accidentally spill their drinks on your shoes.” I glanced at the time. “Speaking of, I have to go and make those cocktails.”

Mason grinned. “You want me to come and get hit on by drunk girls?”

“As someone who has no say in your life whatsoever, I don’t care what you do.” I stood up and looked at him over my shoulder. “As your fake girlfriend, I’m a bit of a tiger, so I wouldn’t.”

“I know.” He snorted, following me to the front door with his laptop tucked under his arm. “I’ve seen you play the possessive girlfriend. If this weren’t all fake, I would have been a little turned on.”

I locked the front door and tossed my hair over my shoulder. “Please. You were totally turned on.”

He said nothing as we headed for the stairs.

“You can say something. That was a joke.” I glanced at him, heat rushing to my cheeks.

His lips pulled into a smirk, eyes flashing. “I reserve the right to not respond.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Back to Shipwreck! Master Baker is as sweet as one of Grady’s delectable donuts. This was a cute friends-to-enemies-to-lovers romance between Grady (who we’ve met before in Flirting With The Frenemy) and Annika, the girl he’s been in love with since he was 14 and couldn’t get over. It’s 10 years after she enlisted in the military, and Annika is back to run her family’s bakery, 10 miles down the road in Sarcasm. (These town names crack me up.) There is a bitter rivalry between the two towns and bakeries, which naturally complicates matters for Grady wanting to be part of Annika’s life again.

But Annika isn’t the same girl who was once his best friend. And the only way to save her family’s business is to ruin Grady’s. And isn’t about to roll over and let that happen. The residents of both towns get involved in the bakery war, but when Grady learns the real reason why Annika so desperately needs her place to succeed, he secretly starts helping her win the battle against his own place. Okay, so it’s a little convoluted, but there are some sugary-sweet moments between them, and the fire is rekindled.

As with most Pippa Grant books, expect some hilarity courtesy of animals — in Master Baker, it’s a dirty-talking parrot and a male goat named Sue. And we get an appearance by the Berger Twins! Another hilarious romcom from Pippa Grant! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Under A Different Sky, by Lindsey Iler

Title: Under a Different Sky
Series: Hand Over My Heart Duet Book One
Author: Lindsey Iler
Genre: New Adult Romance
Release Date: June 10, 2019

My life is a mess.

I’m walking around with a black eye. My position on the hockey team is questionable at best, and if that’s not bad enough, I think I’m falling for my dead girlfriend’s best friend.

Every day, it’s a fight to feel alive, and yet, I drink to numb the pain. Everyone is standing back, watching me fall apart.

Everyone except Hannah. No matter how many times I push, she’s there to pull me back. She refuses to let me spiral any deeper. And after one kiss—she’s impossible to ignore.

Unfortunately, it seems she and I aren’t the only thing being kept a secret.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

Under A Different Sky, things may have been different for Nick and Hannah. He’s a mess of a man following his girlfriend’s death, set on self-destruct. Hannah was Mia’s best friend, and is trying to help Nick through his grief. They both get one another in a way that others don’t, and they soon find that they’ve caught feelings. But are they betraying Mia by wanting to be together?

I’m a little tornn on how I feel about this book. I loved the heightened emotions of it all, but I thought that Nick was a bit of a jerk. Sure, he’s grieving. But that doesn’t give him a hall pass. The relationship with Hannah develops so quickly, I would have liked more of a slow burn between them as they transition from Mia’s best friend and boyfriend to something more. I just didn’t connect with the couple immediately and feel the chemistry between them. Which is why I’m only rating this 3 stars. Well, and it’s a cliffhanger. I hate not knowing that ahead of time, when I signed up to read an early copy.

This story was defintely gripping. But do I want to read the next book? I’m not sure. Reserving judgement on that for now. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Lindsey Iler is the author of the Our Worlds series. She’s had her feet planted in the state of Michigan since she was born and she still lives there with her husband and four kids.

When she’s not writing, she’s spending time with family and friends, listening to music, and reading.

Lindsey writes mature young adult/new adult romance. She falls in love with every character that pops into her head and is notorious for writing long chapters in her notes on her iPhone.

She finds inspiration from music and the people around her.

Release Date: June 26th, 2019

Synopsis:

Is this Reel Love or Real Love?

Hollywood

The moment I laid eyes on Finn Parker’s headshot, I knew that if this guy could act, I wanted him for the hero role in the film being made from my book, Fleeing an August Moon.

The tall, blond, and ruggedly handsome actor looked exactly like the picture I’d seen in my head the entire time I was writing the book.

The studio, however, had different thoughts on a leading man.

Box Office crusher, Maverick Dailey, made it clear that he wanted the role. The producers, studio, and everyone involved were thrilled to score such a celebrity. Well, everyone except me.

And it’s my vote that counts since, according to my contract I get final say on casting. Maverick is amazing, yet I’m just not sure…

It certainly didn’t help that Finn Parker and I seemed destined to cross paths. We ran into each other all over Hollywood. And the more time we spent together, the more the sparks between us flew. We had an intense chemistry, something I’d only ever read about in books like mine.

Which made me wonder, was I really falling for Finn or just living out a fantasy with a red-blooded, live version of my hot hero character?

It’s easy to confuse fiction for reality in Hollywood. Everything is not as it seems in this town.

Not to mention, Finn’s life would forever change if he landed the role. Which made me question how good of an actor he really was? Was he interested in me, or the role I had the power to give him?

Is this Real Love or just Reel Love?

 photo Newest ReelLove_eBook_LowRes_revised_zpsfme9ztyd.jpg

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

When you are America’s hottest romance author, sleeping with the hunky guy who is up for the male lead in the movie based on your book, what is real and what is reel?

Reel Love is a fantastic story that you must put on the top of your Summer 2019 reading list. Frankie is an ordinary Texas girl who happened to write a hot best-seller. She’s completely naive to the way of Hollywood dealings, so when she’s told she has the final say in the casting of her movie, she believes it. As the story goes back and forth between Frankie’s interactions with Finn and Maverick, the two actors vying for the lead, the reader gets some clever insight to the casting process and the Hollywood machine. And the more time Frankie spends with Finn, the more she starts to wonder if their relationship is real or reel…. Are they just using each other? After all, he is exactly what she envisioned for her hero, and she is the author with the final say-so in who gets the job.

There is some great growth on the parts of both characters in this story. But moreso with Finn/Parker. He’s felt so lost the past few years and like he was living a superficial life, and the time he spent with Frankie really helps him find “Parker” again.

And thank you, Julie, for giving that brief appearance by Schooner! I’m interested to see if JR has a book planned for Maverick in the future. As much as I didn’t want to like him, the guy was kind of a saint! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Blurb:

The moment I met Nick Adler, he refused to tell me his name. I already knew it, of course, but I wasn’t going to tell him that.

He was gorgeous, and not in a typical kind of way. Nick’s allure came from his abil-ity to master grace and charm while simultaneously being rough around the edg-es.

I fought my attraction, hard. There was no room in my life for a man like him. My mother was battling Alzheimer’s, and my father and I could hardly keep up with her care. Nick would be a distraction that I couldn’t afford. I’d made up my mind. I was going to ignore him.

And then my dad invited him over for dinner. I watched him that night, unable to ignore the feeling clawing through my chest. I knew Nick would be the end of me.

But I was wrong.

He was just the beginning.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

An Artificial Sun is one of those stories that offers a glimmer of hope even in the character’s darkest hours. When Whitley comes home after years away to care for her mother, who is suffering from Alzheimers, she never expects to find such a sweet, sensitive, caring soul in her parents’ next-door neighbor, Nick.

This book is not an easy one to read, simply because of the subject matter and how crippling Alzheimers is on the entire family, not just the patient. But Nick proves to Whitley over and over again that she deserves happiness and shows her how to find joy even when she feels like she’ll never be happy again.

Grab some tissues before reading this one, because you will need them. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
