Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I’ve found that fake relationship stories can be hit or miss. And Dirty Swedish Player packs in a whole lot of tropes: stepbrother, previous relationship, hockey, wounded hero and bad boy. Yet somehow, it all gels together.

I really liked that Nils and Sierra’s story is set AFTER the first fake relationship they had in college. Aside from one flashback chapter, their story is set in current day, where she pretty much hates him and has gone out of her way to avoid him, even thought they have common friends. Sierra reluctantly agrees to help Nils clean up his act following a sex tape scandal by posing as his fake girlfriend, but when lines get blurred, will she be able to keep up her end of the bargain?

That flashback chapter filled in a lot of blanks, gave a lot of insight to why Nils did what he did, and why he is the way he is now. He had an abusive dad, and felt abandoned by his mom. Sierra had a controlling dad and was abandoned by her mom. These two came from some screwed-up childhoods, but were so perfect for one another. I really liked that the slow realization that he was catching feelings for Sierra all over again kind of threw Nils for a loop. I wish there could have been more groveling, because his come-to-Jesus moment fell a little flat in an otherwise entertaining book.

This book is part of the Big Stick series, and while it is a standalone, there are plenty of appearances from the other couples. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Back for More by Kayley Loring is available in Audio! Grab it today!!

BLURB

WES

When I was a kid, my dad was the gardener for the richest man in town. His daughter, Lily Barnes, told me she could never like a guy like me. Then she kissed me and told me it would never happen again. When it happened again, she told me she could never love me because she was going to leave this place, and I would never leave my dad.

We were never quite friends, not exactly enemies, and we could never quite stop secretly kissing each other.

She never said goodbye before running off to try to make it as an actress. That was her dream, and I wanted her to chase it. Okay, maybe I hated her for it, just a little.

Now she’s back, with no money and even more sass.

A lot has changed around here … except for my hidden feelings about Lily Barnes.

LILY

So, it turns out I’m a terrible actress and now I’m back!

When my father offers me a job at his company, I actually think he’s finally decided I’m worthy of one day taking over the family business. Imagine my surprise when I find out that the gardener’s son is the one who’s being groomed to take over, and I’ve been assigned to work for him.

Wes Carver has always been rich in confidence and abs, but now he’s rich in everything, including disdain for yours truly.

If he thinks I’m not built to work, he’s wrong.

If he thinks he can boss me around just because he’s my boss, he’s delusional.

If he thinks I’m still the girl who could never love him … I may be a better actress than anyone thought.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I am rather new to audio books. In fact, Back For More is only the second book I’ve listened to. But I am hooked.

Back For More is a great story about the one that got away. Years after she left home to become an actress, Lily and Wes’ positions are reversed: the son of the help is now her boss at her dad’s company, where Lily has to work for a year before getting her trust fund. They’ve always been in love with one another, but her insecurities stemming from her fractured relationship with her dad prevented them from ever acting on their feelings. Now that Lily is back in town, Wes is determined to give Lily all that she’s ever wanted.

Teddy Hamilton and Mackenzie Cartwright did a FABULOUS job with their voices. I got sucked in, looking forward to listening on my way to work. folding laundry, and even while cleaning the bathroom.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Before writing steamy romantic comedy novels, Kayley Loring got a BFA in creative writing from a Canadian university and had a fifteen-year career as a screenwriter in Los Angeles (under a different name). She mostly wrote PG-13 family comedies that studios would pay her lots of money for and then never make into movies. In 2017 she decided to move to the Pacific Northwest and write about all the fun stuff that she wasn’t allowed to write about in those PG-13 scripts. Now she’s breathing cleaner air and writing dirtier words. It’s an adjustment she’s happily getting used to.

Insatiable - BT banner

“Absolute magic!”

—Helena Hunting, New York Times bestselling author

Insatiable, an all-new fun and flirty friends to lovers romance from USA Today bestselling author Melanie Harlow is available now!

Insatiable AMAZON

I didn’t mean to see him naked–it was an accident.

It had to be, right?

Because Noah McCormick and I have never been anything more than friends. In all the years I’ve known him, he’s never once laid a finger on me. And even though he was a cute lifeguard at 16 and a hotter-than-hell sheriff’s deputy at 34, he’s always been that protective guy I could trust to keep his hands to himself. I never wanted to mess with that.

Until I walked in on him getting out of the shower and saw his hard, muscular body totally bare and dripping wet. At that moment I never wanted to mess with anything so badly in my entire life.

I should have covered my eyes. Said I was sorry. At the very least, I could have handed him a towel.

After all, I was only in town for a few days, and he was just doing me a favor by escorting me to my sister’s wedding. It wasn’t a real date.

But I didn’t apologize. And he didn’t cover up.

(Talk about a hot mess.)

After all those years of being just friends, suddenly we’re insatiable.

He’s made it clear he’s not interested in romance. Which is fine with me because

I’ve got a plane ticket back to my real life at the end of the week.

It’s all in fun…or is it?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Insatiable is everything I love about a best-friends romance. Meg and Noah have been friends since they were teenagers, but never crossed that line. Sure, there have been a handful of almost-moments over the years, but they (silently) mutually agreed to ignore those near-kisses rather than admit their feelings and ruin their friendship.

But when Meg returns home to attend her sister’s wedding, hanging out with her old pal takes on a whole new meaning. Maybe because she recently ended a relationship with a guy who didn’t love her enough, maybe it’s feeling homesick, or maybe it’s just because the timing is finally right. But there’s an undeniable spark between Meg and Noah, and once they cross that line into a no-strings fling, they find that their appetite for one another is Insatiable…

There’s a lot of depth to Meg and Noah’s relationship. She’s a workaholic who has always hidden behind her legal career when it comes to relationships so she’d have an easy out. And in return, she’s never had a guy willing to “slay a dragon” and fight for her. Noah, meanwhile, carries an incredible amount of guilt in regard to his dad’s death and his twin brother’s disability. Because of those family duties, he feels like he’s undeserving of finding happiness as a husband and father. But when Meg makes Noah think about all the things he’s been trying to deny himself, will he find a reason to go slay a dragon and fight for her?

The Cloverleigh Farms series has been an enjoyable series of interconnected standalones, and I find myself liking each couple more than the last. I can’t wait to see what happens for oldest sister Sylvia!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sawyer?” I said in disbelief.

Breaking into a huge grin, she started to run.

I was still standing there in shock when she barreled into me, throwing her arms around my neck. She smelled fucking fantastic. Feminine, sweet, delectable.

“What are you doing here?” I asked, trying to hug her back without getting sweat or paint on her. “I thought you didn’t get in until Thursday.”

“I changed my ticket.” She let go just enough to smile up at me impishly. “I’m glad to see you too.”

I laughed. “I’m glad to see you. You just surprised me is all.”

“That was my plan.” She stepped back, and I figured my odor was probably repulsing her.

“I stink, sorry. I went for a run earlier and I never showered. Then I painted the garage.”

“I never mind the smell of sweat. It means hard work.” She brightened. “Will you run tomorrow? I’d love to go with you.

“Sure. We can run tomorrow. I’m off again.”

“Great! Although I’m probably way out of shape.” She made a face. “My work schedule is so crazy, I don’t run as much as I used to.”

“You look great,” I told her. And it was true—she did look great. Maybe not quite as skinny as the last time I’d seen her, but the added curves looked good on her. My eyes wandered without my brain’s permission to her slightly fuller chest and rounder hips. Quickly, I attempted to look at her face again, but then my gaze lingered on her mouth. I remembered what it had looked like the other night in my fantasy as she’d wrapped her lips around my cock and moaned like it was the best thing she’d ever tasted.

My dick twitched beneath my running shorts, and I cleared my throat. “You’ve got a favorite murder? Is there something I need to know?”

She glanced down at her shirt and smiled. “It’s a podcast about true crime. I’m addicted.”

“Never heard of it.”

A sound of exasperation escaped her. “You live under a rock! I can’t believe you’re still not on social media.”

“Yes, you can.”

“Okay, I can, but it makes it really hard to stalk you.”

I shook my head. “People like you are exactly why I don’t want to be on social media.”

She hit me on the shoulder. “I’m kidding! I just want to keep up with your life. I miss you.”

“So come home more often. Talk to my face.”

She grinned. “I do like seeing your face. Want to go grab a beer? Maybe some food?”

“Sure.”

OOTD teaser 1.jpg
This morning had been . . . different. He was different.
After the second time we had sex, I’d seen a side of Xander I’d never experienced before. Sure, I knew he could be funny. He’d joked with me in the short time we’d been friends, and I totally dug his dry sense of humor, but I’d felt as if I had to pull each one of those out of him.
The Xander that I had this morning was something else.  He’d teased in a way he’d never done with me. Hell, he was downright playful. And if it hadn’t been for those shadows I could still see playing in his inky eyes and the way he said discussing his past was out of the question so unflinchingly, I would have thought he was actually happy.
“What’s on your mind, Shortcake?”
At Xander’s question, I pulled myself from my silent contemplation and turned to look at him.
“I miss the bike,” I answered on a pout. It might not have been the honest answer to his question, but it wasn’t a lie.
When we’d left Xander’s earlier, I noticed that the temp outside had taken a serious dive. Instead of leading me to where he’d parked the Harley the night before, he led me to a rustic-looking shed a few yards from the cabin where a big black and chrome truck was parked.
It was nice, relatively new and clean. I’d even go so far as to say the bench seat took my mind into some pretty deep gutters.
But it wasn’t his bike.
“Know you like the bike, baby, and you look sexy as shit in those pants and that jacket, but you’d have frozen to death on the back of it.”
My belly fluttered at his compliment of the outfit I’d painstakingly chosen the night before with him in mind. Good to know it had the intended effect.
He wasn’t wrong about the cold though. As awesome as my faux leather leggings and moto jacket were, they didn’t do a damn thing against the cold.
“Hmm. So what you’re saying is you like me in leather,” I teased.
He glanced at me out of the corner of his eye, and the side of his mouth hooked upward. “I haven’t seen you in much I haven’t liked. But yeah. That leather comes in a close third.”
“After the red dress?”
“After the red dress,” he confirmed.
Curiosity got the best of me, and I couldn’t help but ask, “So what came in at number one?”
He didn’t hesitate. “Those ripped jeans with the fishnets underneath and that cropped black top you wore to The Tap Room a while back.”
Seriously?” I turned to face him full-on. “That’s nowhere close to the best I’ve got! You’ve seen me in way hotter outfits. Hell, half of what I wear to work is better.” Then something hit me. “Wait—how did you even see me in that?”
“Was walkin’ by the bar, saw you dancin’ through the window,” he answered. “And I didn’t say it was the hottest, babe. Yes, most of what you wear to work has me walkin’ around with a hard-on I can’t get rid of, but that one was still my favorite, ’cause it was you.”
My lips parted and I suddenly found it difficult to breathe as I whispered, “It was me?”
“Yeah,” he replied casually, keeping his eyes on the road, so he couldn’t have seen how big an impact his statement was having on me right then. “From the hair to those boots, it was all you.”
Oh shitDo not cry, Sage, I mentally scolded. I’d spent three years with a man who did everything in his power to change me. He took who I was and twisted and molded until I became something completely different, and I’d let him.
But with one simple comment, the man beside me not only showed he knew the realme, but that he liked it. He couldn’t possibly know, but having him say that meant absolutely everything.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh my goodness! I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning because I had to finish this book. I read it in a single day. And by the time I finally went to sleep, my heart had been stomped upon and my eyes were red and puffy from crying. I hate to say it, only because I’d really been rooting for Cord and Rory, but I think Xander and Sage are my favorite Hope Valley couple yet!

Xander is the alphaest of alpha males. He’s a big, burly, surly, beast of a man. The jabs that he and Sage exchange from the get-go are freakin hilarious. Paul Bunyan and Shortcake had me in stitches with their hatefest. And you know when a couple bickers like that, it’s going to be amazing when they finally give in.

Surprisingly, as much as I laughed while reading this book, was full-blown sobbing at parts, too. Because underneath that big, burly, surly, beast is a man so broken and haunted by the demons of his past that he lives in a self-inflicted world of misery. And when he lets his darkness come between him and Sage, I was a mess. Like with the other books in this series, there’s an incident where Sage is in danger and Xander gets to play knight in black leather armor. And it’s perfect and beautiful and made me cry all over again.

Jessica Prince has done an amazing job with every single book in this series. While they are all standalones, I love how interconnected and intertwined and close this group of friends are, and the support they give one another. And though Sage is a newcomer to Hope Valley, she’s welcomed to the group as one of their own.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Family Journal, by Carolyn Brown

Title: The Family Journal

Author: Carolyn Brown

Release Date: November 12, 2019

Publisher: Montlake Romance

Summary

At the end of her rope, single mom Lily Anderson is determined to move her rebellious children in the right direction. That means taking away their cell phones, tablets, and computers—at least temporarily—and moving to the house where Lily grew up in the rural town of Comfort, Texas. But Lily has a bigger challenge than two sulking kids.
The house comes with Mack Cooper, high school teacher and handsome longtime renter. The arrangement: just housemates. But Mack’s devoted attention to the kids starts to warm Lily’s resistant heart. Then Lily finds an old leather-bound book in which five generations of her female ancestors shared their struggles and dreams. To Lily, it’s a bracing reminder about the importance of family . . . and love.
Now it’s time for Lily to add an adventurous new chapter to the cherished family journal—by embracing a fresh start and taking a chance on a man who could make her house a home.

TheFamilyJournal.jpg

Excerpt: The Family Journal by Carolyn Brown

Lily reached for her tea at the same time Mack was setting his glass back down. Their hands touched again. Her breath caught in her chest, and her pulse jacked up several notches.

“I’m going to ask you a dumb question,” he drawled. “Do you feel chemistry between us?”

Her chest tightened. Of course she felt something between them, but she damn sure didn’t want to talk about it like they were discussing the price of goat feed. And yet . . . they were adults, not hormonal teenagers who jumped into the fire with both feet when they felt something for another person. How many times had she told her clients in therapy sessions to talk things out?

“Why is that dumb?” she asked.

“It kind of sounded dumb in my head, and even more so when I said it,” he said.

“Yes, I do feel something between us.” She nodded. “I’ve wondered if it’s because I haven’t dated all that much. How about you?”

“No dates in three years. Nothing serious since Natalie,” he admitted.

“Do you think it’s because we hav-haven’t,” she stammered.

“No, I think there’s definitely an attraction between us, and I’ll tell you right now, up front, you deserve better than me,” he said.

Lily frowned so hard that her eyes became mere slits. “Why would you say a stupid thing like that?”

“I’m a high school vo-ag teacher, and I’ll never be rich. Hell, I’m forty-one, and I don’t even own a house. I’ve just got a pickup that’s paid for and a herd of goats,” he said.

“Why, Mack Cooper, are you thinkin’ marriage?” she joked. “You haven’t even kissed me yet.”

“I’m just thinking that we shouldn’t start anything without being completely honest, and, honey, I can remedy that kissing part anytime.” His green eyes twinkled.

Lily felt heat rising to her cheeks when she thought of kissing him. How in the devil would it even work if they did decide to go out, or got into a relationship beyond friendship? They lived in the same house with Holly and Braden underfoot all the time. “I’ve got two kids,” she blurted out.

“I’ve got forty goats.” He grinned.

“Did you say it’s time to go feed the goats?” Braden came across the room and leaned his arms on the back of the sofa.

Point proven, she thought.

“Yep, it is,” Mack answered. “I reckon we both need to get changed so we don’t ruin our good clothes.”

“I’ll be down in five minutes.” Braden ran up the stairs.

Mack crossed the room and bent to brush a sweet kiss across her lips. The tenderness of his mouth barely touching hers and his drawl combined to send a heat flash through her whole body. If that brief contact created such an effect, a relationship might burn down the house.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

This book was so much more than a love story between Lily and Mack, an old high school friend. It was a beautiful story of the strength of women and family, and the bonds that tie us together as family.

Having a hard time with her teenaged children, Lily packs them up and moves them to her rural hometown. But rather than kick out her tenent, Mack, the four become a motley crew of roommates. That is how the romance blossoms between the old friends, but it’s the family journal that Lily finds that helps her heal her relationship with her daughter. And in a way, heal herself, as she’s forced to face some truths she’d turned a blind eye to.

This story is wonderfully written, with rich characters and a gripping tale of love and family. I received an advanced copy via NetGalley from the publisher and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Crazy For Loving You, by Pippa Grant

Title: Crazy for Loving You

A Bluewater Billionaires Novel

Author: Pippa Grant
Genre: Romantic Comedy

 Release Date: November 8, 2019

Blurb

Is there anything hotter than a growly, overprotective
Marine cradling a baby? My melted ovaries don’t think so.
When you work hard and have the bank account to prove it,
you’re entitled to play hard. I’ve seen some crazy things. I’ve caused some
crazy scenes. And there’s no shame in my game.
But I’m still knocked off my stilettos when an insane chain
of events leads to me inheriting a baby. The craziest part? The baby comes with
a by-the-books, no-nonsense retired Marine who’s so regimented that I wouldn’t
be surprised if he irons his boxer shorts.
Parenting? Bring it on. I don’t need sleep—I once started my
day with business meetings in Cairo and ended it three days later at a club in
Melbourne. Changing diapers? Please. It can’t be any more challenging than
changing out of Spanx on the back of a moving motorcycle. Training the little guy
to run the family’s real estate empire? He’ll be all our bosses by the time
he’s four.
But living with my new co-guardian? The gruff, muscled,
tattooed former military man who manages to check all my boxes while trying to
sneak under my skin?
He needs to go.
Because the longer he stays, the more layers he’s peeling
off my heart.
But love isn’t something that’s ever diluted my gene pool,
and I like my life just fine without it. I have awesome friends, this adorable
baby and an obscene amount of money. Who needs love?
Turns out…maybe me.
Crazy for Loving You is a larger-than life ride
through accidental parenthood featuring a fun-loving billionaire playgirl, a
crusty Marine with a gooey center, a horny dolphin, the world’s most obscene
pool, and all the fun you’d expect from a world built by Lucy Score, Claire
Kingsley, Kathryn Nolan, and Pippa Grant.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Pippa Grant puts her quirky stamp on Daisy in Crazy For Loving You, one of the Bluewater Billionaire books.

There is something so funny about quirky, free-spirited Daisy and gruff, no-nonsense Marine West. Thanks to their attempts at co-parenting baby Remington (Remy), this book is full of craziness, laugh-out-loud moments… and lots of family dysfunction. And as much as they get off on the wrong foot, it’s sweet to see Daisy and West fall in love with one another as they fall in love with baby Remy.

This series collaboration from four authors has been a delight to read! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Publication date: June 11th 2018
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Description:

Bradley

I used to think that love was for the weak.
It was not something that would ever tie me down.

Until I learned the truth behind my resistance.

When I let down my guard, I wasn’t expecting to find love.
Samantha’s voice called for my attention before I ever met her.
Now my heart is in need. My heart wants her.
And I will do whatever it takes to make it happen.

Samantha

All I ever wanted was to be loved.
Until love crushed my heart into a million pieces.

I built a wall tough enough that no one could ever get that close again.

But Bradley isn’t just anyone. I’m not prepared for all that he is.
He’s searching for something that I don’t think I can give.
The more I try to deny him the harder it becomes.
He’s going to tear my wall down. And I’m torn because…
I wasn’t looking for love.
Love found me.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

This was a cute young adult story. I enjoyed it, but I didn’t love it. The book is split into two parts, with the first being the backstory of Brad and Samantha. The second part is when they meet by chance as juniors in college, both having suffered teenage heartbreak and being closed off to love.

I felt that the story was rushed when they finally do get together, and I was left wanting more of them as a couple. After all of the backstory I read, I felt a bit gipped by what I read of their actual relationship. Overall, An Unexpected Kind left me just wanting more.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

🔥🔥 HOT NEW RELEASE 🔥🔥

Loving Miss Sassy by A.M. Madden & Joanne Schwehm is LIVE!! #OneClick today!

BOOK BLURB

I am sure of four things:

I’m the most sought-after social influencer.

I’m prepared to kick ass and take names.

I’m going to conquer the Big Apple.

I wasn’t prepared to have an unexpected roommate who happens to be drop-dead gorgeous.

Being the younger sister of two overprotective brothers taught me to be tenacious. Granted, that didn’t fare well when I mistook my roomie for an intruder. Fine, maybe a right hook wasn’t the most ladylike greeting, but his black eye only lasted a week. How was I supposed to know said intruder was also my advertising adversary?

The answer: I didn’t.

And having a single wall separating our bedrooms only adds more angst to my list. I’m sure I’ll never get a good night’s rest wondering if he sleeps commando . . . if those are moans I hear or snores . . . if he imagines me in his bed as I imagine him in mine.

The list goes on and on.

The most shocking thing I wasn’t prepared for was how he managed to capture my heart . . . right before he shattered it.

He called me Miss Sassy, and I proved him right.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Dante and Luca Benedetto’s little sister gets her own chance at love in Loving Miss Sassy. What a spitfire Gianna is! This enemies-to-lovers/roommate romance sizzles just as much as the rest of the couple in JS and AM’s Mr. Wrong series.

The difference in approaches that Colton and Gianna have in their marketing plans is brilliant. It puts them at odds while really using the new technology vs old school approach to consumerism. Each jab and zinger between them is spiked with chemistry, and it sets the stage for a brilliant romcom that I’ve come to expect from this writing duo.

Dive in, you won’t regret it! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

When a lonely vet(eran) and an ambitious vet(erinarian) work together to win the Qimmiq 200, sparks will fly…

Cody Garrison, a retired U.S. Marine, doesn’t tell Juliet that he was left permanently disabled during his time in active service, fearing that she wouldn’t agree to race with him if she knew. Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

This story was so sweet! And so unique! I loved the setting in Alaska, but moreso, the ins and outs of dog-sled racing. Cody was such a sweet, sweet man. I loved that he didn’t let his disability stop him from doing anything (like mushing!) yet he was so vulnerable and insecure about it at the same time. Juliet hits him like a ton of bricks, and the evolution of their friendship to romance was perfect.

I did feel that the end was a bit rushed. I got what I wanted from the newspaper epilogue, but I wanted to SEE that adjustment in their relationship once he decides that Juliet is his dream, not running the Iditarod immediately.

Overall, Nome-O Seeks Juliet is a delight and an enjoyable story to get lost in! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Dirty Letters, by Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward

Title: Dirty Letters

Authors: Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward

Release Date: November 5, 2019

Publisher: Montlake

Summary

She had yet to meet him but had never forgotten the British boy who’d warmed her heart.

As childhood pen pals, Griffin Quinn and Luca Vinetti couldn’t have been more different. Over the years, through hundreds of letters, they became best friends, sharing their deepest, darkest secrets.

Until one day it ended.

Griffin never understood why Luca disappeared. She was special. She knew the real him like no one else. He writes her a drunken letter, an angry one, never expecting her to write back.

Before they know it, they’re right where they left off. This time with heat.

But as playing catch-up goes from fun to flirty to downright dirty, Luca wants more. She wants Griffin in the flesh. That’s where it gets risky. Because when they meet, the mystery will be over. And once they really get to know each other, there’ll be no going back.

EXCERPT: Dirty Letters by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward

The small dining room table had a pile of mail. I’d had Dad’s mail forwarded to my house, so mostly it was just catalogs and junk. Once a month, Mrs. Cascio sent me everything that arrived, even though I’d told her it wasn’t necessary. I mindlessly fingered through the pile, not expecting to see anything worth keeping. But I stopped at an envelope addressed to me—well, not me, but Luca Ryan. That was a name I hadn’t heard in a long time. In second grade, my teacher, Mrs. Ryan, started a pen pal writing program with a small town in England. We weren’t allowed to use our real last names for safety reasons, so the entire class used her last name—hence I was Luca Ryan. I checked out the return address for the sender’s name.

  1. Quinn

Wow, really? It couldn’t be.

I squinted at the postmark. It was from a PO box in California, not England, but I didn’t know any other Quinn other than Griffin. And the handwriting did look pretty familiar. But it had been close to eight years since we’d exchanged letters. Why would he write now? Curious, I ripped it open and scanned right to the bottom of the letter for the name. Sure enough, it was from Griffin. I started at the beginning.

Dear Luca,

Do you like scotch? I remember you said you didn’t like the taste of beer. But we never did get around to comparing our taste in hard liquor. Why is that, you might ask? Let me remind you—because you stopped answering my letters eight damn years ago. I wanted to let you know, I’m still pissed off about that. My mum used to say I hold grudges. But I prefer to think of it as I remember the facts. And the fact of the matter is, you suck. There, I’ve said it. I’ve been holding that shit in for a long time. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not obsessive or anything. I don’t sit in my house thinking about you all day long. In fact, there have been months that go by when thoughts of you don’t even enter my brain. But then some random thing will pop into my head out of the blue. Like I’ll see some kid in a pram eating black licorice, and I’ll think of you. Side note—I’ve tried it again as an adult, and I still think it tastes like the bottom of my shoe, so perhaps it’s that you just have no taste. You probably don’t even like scotch. Anyway, I’m sure this letter won’t find its way to you. Or if by some miracle it does, you won’t answer. But if you’re reading this, you should know two things.

  1. The Macallan 1926 is worth the extra cash. Goes down smooth.
  2. You SUCK.

Later, traitor, Griffin

What in the hell?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Another great collab from Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward! I pretty much devoured this book in a lazy Sunday afternoon because I could not get enough of Griffin and Luca! The history between these two — childhood pen pals who never met — was an original twist on the celebrity/ordinary girl romance.

The authors did a great job of detailing Luca’s crippling anxiety, and how that worked against Griffin’s life as a famous singer. As much as they tried to make their relationship work, is his life of extremes too much for her to handle?

In the end, of course, Luca and Griffin strike a great balance. He’s so sweet in the way he protects and cares for her, goes out of his way to make sure that everything is perfect and takes into consideration all of her anxiety issues. And on the flip side, all of Luca’s reasons for wanting to break things off stemmed from her love for him, and not wanting her issues to drag Griffin down.

Dirty Letters is all kinds of sweetness, but still full of steam. I loved it! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
