Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

All the feels! I read I Never Planned On You, and loved it, and was so thrilled that I Never Expected You was just as phenomenal!

Zach and Haylee have known each other forever, as their parents are best friends and his sister/her bestie is dating her brother/his best friend. But after Emmett tragically dies, Dani takes off and cuts everyone out, making it a double loss for the families. In their grief, Zach and Haylee help each other heal and turn to one another for support, and a beautiful love is born out of the ashes of their mourning.

I loved that SJ redid scenes that took place in Planned On You, now showing Zach and Haylee’s experiences of scenes with Kyler and Dani. And the grief that both Zach and Haylee feel in Emmett’s death carries over to every milestone in their relationship. He isn’t forgotten, but is like another character in this story. It’s beautifully told, beautifully executed and a wonderful friends to lovers romance.

While it’s not necessary to read Planned On You first, it will definitely provide more background to Zach, Haylee and Dani’s history and connection. It ends on a teeny cliffhanger, teasing a novella that SJ has planned. And I can’t wait for that!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt
Still in his embrace, I whisper in a shaky voice, “What is
happening between us?”
He exhales a breath in a way that makes me feel like he has
been holding it in for a while. Is it possible he has been feeling this
too? “I don’t know, Hails. I can’t explain it. All I know is that I can’t get
you out of my head. Let me take you out.”
I push up off his chest, our faces just a breath away from
each other. I no longer notice that we’re stuck at the top of the Ferris wheel
overlooking the city. It’s just Zach I see and feel. If a light breeze came
through, our lips would be touching.
“Okay,” I whisper against his lips.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Landon & Shay Part 2

L&S pt 2 - BT banner.jpg

Landon & Shay: Part Two, the not to be missed conclusion of the Landon and Shay duet by Brittainy C. Cherry, is available now!

Get your binge on with this must-read enemies to lovers, second chance romance!

Landon & Shay AMAZON (1).jpg

Once upon a time, I fell in love with a boy.
A beautiful, broken boy who had his own world of struggles.

People warned me against our love, but I didn’t listen.
We looked weak.
Young, foolish.
Dangerously in love.
We didn’t care.

In order to keep our hearts protected from the opinions of others, we became each other’s secret.
We shared stolen moments. Tender touches. Secretive embraces.

It was our twisted love story, and it worked for us up until our lives changed forever.
The boy I loved became Hollywood’s newest golden boy.
His career blossomed as mine stalled.
He found massive success as I discovered multiple failures.
He made something of himself, while my dreams never came true.
We moved into different realms where our pieces no longer fit together.

In the fairy tales, love conquered all.
In reality, love was the main reason empires began to fall.
I always knew Landon belonged in my story.
He was my beginning, middle, and end.
The only problem? I wasn’t certain I still belonged in his.

Excerpt:

Shay

“Oh my gosh, tell us everything.” Raine beamed as she sat across from Landon at the dining room table with her chin on her hands in amazement. “Tell me everything about being famous.”

That privacy I thought Landon and I would get?

Not going to happen with Raine living in the same place as me. She was so giddy seeing her best friend, and I couldn’t blame her. I was just as excited—even more so than her.

Landon looked so good, so grown-up.

He had facial hair that was groomed to perfection, and he smelled like sex appeal and honey. Since he’d arrived, I hadn’t allowed myself to be far from his side.

I sat in the chair next to him, and he hadn’t removed his hand from my thigh, massaging it up and down.

“I’m not famous.” Landon chuckled, giving Raine a smile. “I honestly don’t know what’s been happening to me, or why it’s been happening to me, but I feel like I’ll one day wake up and it will all be a dream.”

“You know what I hate?” Raine asked, crinkling her nose up.

“What’s that?” Landon replied.

“When really famous people claim they aren’t famous. That’s like when rich kids are like ‘Oh, I’m not rich, my parents are.’ Like, shut up, Susan. You can’t say you’re not rich while driving your Mercedes Benz wearing your Gucci shoes. That’s not how that works.”

I chuckled at my dramatic friend. “She is right, though. You are famous, Landon. The world has seen your tushy in boxer briefs. That’s the top layer of fame.”

“And what a cute little tushy-wushy it is,” Raine mocked, leaning over to pinch his cheeks. “I’m a proud big sister.”

“For the millionth time, I’m older than you, Raine,” Landon remarked.

“By age, not by maturity.” She darted her eyes back and forth between the two of us. Then her stare moved to Landon’s hand caressing my upper thigh. “Is this about to get a little PG-13? Should I leave?”

“You should probably leave,” I joked.

She nodded in agreement. “Okay, well, don’t make plans tomorrow night, Landon. We’re going to have everyone over for a reunion. Now, go do whatever it is you’re planning to do, you two lovebirds—but remember, these walls are thin, and my bedroom is right next door to Shay’s.”

I laughed. “I know, and I’m reminded of how thin the walls are every time Hank stays the night.”

She gave me a smile and a wink. “We broke the headboard the other night.”

Landon jumped in. “And I think that falls into the realm of too much information. I don’t want to think about Hank and you banging and breaking headboards. You are like a big sister to me, after all.”

Raine walked around and patted him on the back. “You’re old enough to know that your sister gets laid, Landon—at least four times a week in many different positions.”

“Raine,” Landon groaned, slapping his hand to his face. “Too much information.”

“I bet you won’t think it’s too much information when Shay breaks out some of the moves from the Kama Sutra book I gave her. Good night, kiddos.”

She hurried off, and Landon was staring at me with a highly arched eyebrow.

“What?” I asked.

“What’s this about a Kama Sutra book?” His lips curved up into a wicked grin.

I rolled my eyes. “It’s nothing. Raine is just a sex-driven girl. She said she and Hank needed to spice things up after being together so long.”

“I like spice. Spice is my favorite thing. What are some of the names of the moves in the book? What are we trying tonight?”

I felt my face heating up from the idea of it all. “None.”

He cocked an eyebrow. “Oh crap. You’ve really read this book, haven’t you?”

“What? No. Not at all.”

He smirked and pointed a finger. “You have one on the tip of your tongue. I can tell. Do share.”

“Well…” I pulled the collar of my shirt between my lips and shrugged. “There is this thing called the butterfly.”

The way his eyes smiled along with his lips made my cheeks heat even more. He rose to his feet. “Come on, let’s go. I’m going to butterfly the hell out of you.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh, my heart! I don’t remember the last time I’ve read a book so full of angst. This duet (specifically part 2) is on par with A Love Letter To Whiskey by Kandi Steiner as far as the angst-factor goes. I was sobbing. SOBBING! Landon put up such a brave front, but he is a broken shell of a man, constantly battling the darkness of his mind, anxiety and depression. The bits and pieces he can give Shay make him feel better, but become an addiction for her that only leaves her brokenhearted.

This duet is spectacular. It’s full of sad moments, but plenty of happy ones too as Landon fights tooth and nail to work his way back into Shay’s heart. I have to say, I really did not like him when I read Eleanor & Gray, but there is so much more to this wonderful character.

Brittainy Cherry is a master storyteller. She handled Landon’s mental illness with so much grace and is hopefully planting the seeds for a story with Grey’s daughter, Karla, who also suffers from depression. This is a magnificent story, and the push and pull between these characters will work your last nerve…. until you get to that final, final scene. That is a moment so full of swoon and romance, it makes all the screams of frustration worth it!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

I have read a few Melissa Foster books in the past, and enjoyed them. This Is Love, however, wasn’t one of my favorites.

This is the second book in a series, and I have not read the other. I don’t know if it would have made a difference. I just thought that Remi and Mason were a bit boring. The older bodyguard/young actress pairing had potential, and the story is easy to read… there just wasn’t anything about it that really called out to me. It was kind of too predictable, and they were a bit boring.

Unfortunately, this one was a bust. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Blurb:

Want to know a secret?

It’s about that girl over there.
Don’t look, but she’s the one in the power suit—with the long, black hair and the serious expression, the one I’m about to go on a date with . . .

Yeah, according to her, she “accidentally” donated an obscene amount of money to my charity — The Lineup — to win said date but I found out the truth. Miss. Button Up Blouse has a secret, passionate crush on me.

I didn’t know her name until two days ago, despite the friends we have in common.
Was I oblivious? Probably.
Was I blind to it? Definitely.

But I’m no fool, I see it now. The High Heel Harlot wants more than just a date with Jason Orson, she wants to be able to claim the best butt in baseball as hers.

Here’s another secret . . . she has no idea I know.

TheLineup_teaser-8

EXCERPT:

**JASON**

It isn’t in my nature to cry over burnt ham, but here I am, tearing up like a jackass, because the meal I’ve been reluctantly slaving over for the past four hours is two shades away from charred dust.

I had it all planned out. The timing was right, the recipes perfected, the table decorated with impeccably folded napkins that impersonated angelic swans, and polished silver that I scrubbed for an hour until I could see my balls in the reflection. Nothing says polished silverware like a spoon that gives you a clear upside-down view of your gonads.

But even with countless hours of preparing this feast, naked as the day I was born with only an apron to cover my man-loins, I still ended up with a scorched ham doused in fire extinguisher agent because somehow, the damn thing caught on fire.

Imagine this, a grown-ass man—no, not just a grown-ass man, but a man at the fresh age of twenty-eight, built like a linebacker with buttocks you can bounce rocks off . . . thanks to squatting for a living—dancing around the kitchen on his twinkle toes, arms flailing with pink and white potholders attached to his hands, screaming like a banshee, as flames light up the Jenn-Air double oven where the brown sugar and pineapple ham resided.

Are you seeing it?

Add the imagery of said man naked, dick and balls harmoniously bouncing in panic while the apron his “girlfriend” got him that says Eat my food, Lick my dick, unravels in the fit to unleash the fire extinguisher.

That was me . . . a minute ago.

Frantic, screaming, and all in all losing any last shred of my man card I had left.

It’s why I’m currently weeping like a nitwit into the flaps of my apron, wondering where I went wrong.

If we’re going to be honest with each other—and I would like to establish honesty with you—I’ll admit, I’ve always leaned toward the sensitive side. You know, the cuddly grizzly bear. Big and intimidating but a fucking gooey butterball heart on the inside.

Tell me a love story. I’ll listen the crap out of it.

The Bachelor? Why yes, that’s one of my favorite shows.

Do I smile when sharing a candlelit dinner with myself, followed by a nice long soak in a bubble bath while Enya—the fucking goddess of all voices—plays in the background? I sure as shit do.

But if some ignorant asswipe gets in my face on the ball field, stirring up trouble, I’m the first to lay a fist across his jaw and the first to be thrown out of a game.

And I’m not even sorry about it.

People are arriving in an hour. I’m vulnerable as fuck with my bare ass resting against the cold white-oak floor of my girl’s apartment, while a lonely tear streams down my freshly shaven cheek. I have no main dish, and the apartment smells like burnt rabbit turd.

Why am I in this hopeless predicament?

Because of one person.

One single person who flipped my life upside down.

A bombshell in a suit, a ravenous sex-fiend in the sheets, a classy and sophisticated tight-ass in the boardroom. She’s a knockout who’s always on my mind. She’s the girl you do things for, that you never thought you’d ever do . . .

Like cook a fancy-as-fuck four-course meal for her and her business associates while practicing interesting conversational starters to ensure the night flows smoothly.

Back in college, I might have been referred to as the mother hen of the boys. I might have cooked at least two meals a week for the guys in the loft, and yeah, I was the ironing wizard, the one everyone turned to, to get out the most stubborn wrinkles. The title has carried on over the years, but my creativity in the kitchen has dwindled with the lack of time, my ironing is now done by my apartment keeper once a week, and the fresh flowers scattered around my place? They’re more dead now than alive.

My point—I’m not the lady of the house I used to be. But I’ve been getting back into the swing of it.

So when my girl asked me to perform the impossible feat of an intimate dinner for four, I should have ordered in, tossed everything in serving dishes, and called it a night.

But nooooooooo, I had to attempt to be a goddamn hero and try to cook everything myself.

And all for what?

For one girl?

No. Not just one girl. The girl who owns my balls, who has a grip so tight on them that if she asked me to bellow out my ABCs in soprano while swirling my finger around my belly button . . . I would.

Who is this girl that has brought me to the brink of boo-boo smush bear insanity and caused me to weep like a schoolgirl in the corner of the apartment?

There’s only one lady with more than enough ovaries to buckle the knees of the mighty Jason Orson.

The one and only Dorothy “Dottie” Domico.

TheLineup_teaser-9

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Potato-Salad Stars

Every time I think Meghan Quinn has written my favorite hero, her next book comes out and I have to move them around on my list!

This is the third book in a series of standalones, but is set after the baseball boys are in college and are established major league players. But Dottie always had a crush on Jason back in school, and he barely remembers her at all. As an exec in her dad’s real estate development company, Dottie has a high-stress job. And the fact that her last personal relationship caused some professional problems has her unable to trust Jason at first. And he is pursuing her hard. But she’s totally holding her ex’s actions against him. But when she needs a boyfriend for a potential deal, Dottie claims that she’s been dating Jason for years, and then agrees to go out with him.

But when Jason finds out that it was all fake, is there any chance of Dottie convincing him that it was actually very real? I loved that in this book, it is the guy who got hurt as it’s typically the other way around. And Jason does not make it easy for Dottie when she tries to apologize. I was crying into my pillow just as Jason was crying on Knox’s shoulder! Just like Dottie was used for her power and position in a previous relationship, Jason was hurt by an ex who was only with him for his fame. But whereas he was all in when it came to their relationship, Dottie was definitely holding back.

There is something so special about Jason! The snarky comments between and digs between he and Dottie are awesome. But then there are all the sweet and tender moments — and that is one sensitive dude! I love how Jason owns it and makes no apologies for having big feelings.

This group of friends is so much fun. I loved catching up with Knox and Emory and Carson and Milly. I can’t wait for Walker and Cory to get their own stories, and I hope it’s with Lindsay and Natalie!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

The tailor squawked as Dane pushed him aside, striding toward me in his underwear. He put his hands on the arms of my chair and leaned over me, his eyes on mine. I could see every inch of his naked skin. He glared at me.

“I get it,” he growled. “You’re pushing me. It’s what you do. Are you trying to see how far you can go?”

My voice came out breathy. God, I could smell him. “I’m not doing anything,” I said, and we both knew it was a lie.

“What do you want?” Dane said, thick with frustration. “Do you want me to say I’m sorry?”

My hands went cold and my breath stopped. “Sorry for what?”

“You know what. Sorry for what I did the last time I saw you.”

He thought he had to apologize for that? As if he had done something wrong? Had he thought that all this time? I couldn’t bear the idea. “No,” I told him. “Don’t say you’re sorry for that.”

He still watched me, his voice softening a little. “I’ll say it if you want me to.”

“Don’t,” I choked out. “Don’t.”

A muscle in his jaw twitched, and then he shook his head, backing off. “Can I at least put my clothes on now?”

I didn’t answer, and he didn’t wait for it. He grabbed his clothes and shoes and put them under his arm. “I’m going to dress in the men’s room,” he growled. “I’d like some privacy for a second.”

I still couldn’t speak. Dane walked away, and I downed the rest of the champagne in my glass, gulping it. He thought I wanted him to apologize. That fucking man.

That brilliant, stupid, utterly infuriating man.

I put my heels back on and stood up, looking at the suits and fabrics in the room. Now that the measurements were—mostly—done, I talked to the tailor about cuts, fabrics, and colors. Then my phone rang. Only after I hung up did I realize that Dane hadn’t come out of the bathroom, which was around the corner and down the hall.

“Would you like me to go find him?” the tailor asked politely.

“No need,” I said as suspicion bloomed in my gut. I walked around the corner myself, pushing open the door to the men’s room. “Dane!”

The room was empty.

“Fuck,” I said as the tailor came in after me. I turned to him. “Is there a back door?”

He looked stunned. Most likely, none of his rich clients had ever made an escape while getting measured for a bespoke suit. “At the end of the hall,” he said.

“Fuck,” I said again. I half-ran down the hall, moving as fast as I could in my three-inch heels. I slammed the back door open and saw nothing but parking lot.

Dane was gone.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Sexy As Sin, indeed! Julie Kriss has given the world another great second-chance romance with Dane and Ava. These opposites attract in a spectacular way and I could not put my kindle down!!

Ava is called to give her brother’s best friend (and her own secret past fling) a makeover. Dane is grouchy and grumpy, but the nerdy boy she knew has turned into a hot grouch. As they work together on their makeover, they also unpack a lot of their past baggage… and realize they aren’t over each other at all.

Ava is a hoot. She’s a straight-shooter with a take no crap attitude. Dane is a bit of an arrogant jerk these days, and it was entertaining to read them butt heads. The tension certainly builds up to an explosive reunion!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

The author is giving away a $25 Amazon Gift Card. Stop over at her page to enter for a chance to win. https://www.facebook.com/juliekrissauthor/

Julie loves reading and writing hot, sexy romances with awesome alpha heroes. Her favorite things are books, coffee, her perfect cat, and her husband, not necessarily in that order. She’s a writing addict who is always hard at work on her next steamy romance.

Excerpt:

“What’s your favorite color?” She tilts her head to the side and winks.

Damn, she’s cute.

“Navy blue.”

She snorts. “Typical male color.”

Anything but. “You were wearing navy-blue Converse sneakers with frayed denim jeans the first time I stepped into Java Joe’s and saw you.”

Screw waiting for tomorrow. Operation seduce-the-sexy-barista begins now.

I’ve surprised her, based on the way her jaw unhinges and her pretty blue eyes fly open. It’s time she realizes how long I’ve really wanted to ask her out. I scoot forward on my chair as she stammers, those cheeks of hers burning bright, and I place my hand at her jaw. It’s the first time we’ve truly touched, other than some minor hand-holding, and I’m stunned by the softness of her skin where my hand brushes her chin, and she closes her mouth with a snap.

I’m not generally a lay-your-cards-on-the-table kind of guy, preferring to keep them close to my vest with those I don’t know well. In my line of work, secrecy is absolute. Anyone can steal an idea, and it’s easier to keep anything personal to the few people I trust. But it might be time to throw all those cards down, faceup, if I want a chance with this woman.

“I like you, Willow. I was attracted to you the first time I walked into Java Joe’s. I like that you ignore me, but you blush as you look away. I like that you stood up to me when I put my foot in my mouth, and I even like that you’re scared of small planes and the ocean—”

“I’m not afraid—”

“I also think you’re beautiful and sexy as hell, heavy baggage and stubbornness included. You need to know all that this weekend, because I plan on spending the next few days showing you exactly how much I mean it.”

My thumb trails over her lips as they part. Soft. So damn soft. My dick is currently anything but.

“You’re very forward.”

I lean closer, my hand at her jaw sliding to the back of her neck to pull her close. She comes easily, lips parting further, as I get so close to her. My lips are at her ear, that hit of her jaw, her cheeks . . . “I’m very turned on by you, Willow Parks, and I’m not a man who passes on an opportunity when it’s quite literally almost in my lap. I’m more of a seize-and-conquer kind of man, but you’ll learn that. I promise.”

Her body shivers and her puff of breath against my skin turns shallow. I’ve turned her on and I’m hard as a rock. Brushing my lips across her cheek, I kiss her, tease, taking the hint of the promise of her sweetness with me and swallowing it down before I lean back. “We should go to sleep. You have an early morning.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Funny, flirty and so swoony! I am so happy that Trey got his HEA!

Willow was such a relatable character. Her life was in the crapper, when bachelor billionaire Trey asks her to accompany him to his friend’s wedding. Just for a weekend, she can forget about the past due bills, her moms depression and all the stress in her life. Trey is sexy and funny, and she can’t help but fall for him when she discovers how sweet he is, too.

But just as Willow is letting go, she gets a call that sends her rushing home. Trey doesn’t give up, though, knowing that there is a genuine connection between them. He has the patience of a saint, because no matter how hard Willow tries to push him away so he doesn’t have to deal with her baggage, he is right there offering support and a shoulder to cry on.

And when she finally gives in to her feelings and let’s herself fall, it’s magnificent.

This is a standalone within a series, and having previously read the other three, I was thrilled to catch up with Corbin and Trager, Braxton and Cara, and Caitlin and Jonas. Willow is the bridge for Braxton/Cara, as Cara’s friend, to the other couples in this series.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: A Fairbanks Affair, by Katy Regnery

New York Times bestselling author Katy Regnery returns with the third book in her Odds-Are-Good series!

Three nights. Two of us. One bed. Zero chance at love.
Boston businesswoman, Faye Findley, has devoted the last decade of her life to work, leaving no time for romance. Tired of being a 30-year-old virgin, Faye answers an ad in The Odds Are Good magazine, hoping to turn over her v-card to a sexy Alaskan she’ll never see again.
Successful distillery owner, Trevor Starling, was left betrayed and broken-hearted when his brother and fiancée had sex the night before Trevor’s wedding. Anticipating a lonely New Year’s celebration, he places an ad in The Odds Are Good for a no-strings attached weekend of hot sex.
Though mistaken identity threatens to derail everything, the chemistry between Faye and Trevor turns out to be stronger than either could have imagined. And what started out as a one-and-done mission becomes much more complicated.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

What starts out as a personal ad for a New Year’s Weekend fling turns into so much more for Faye and Trevor. There is an immediate connection between them the moment they meet, even if he is being a grade-A jerk. But they can’t deny their connection, especially once they figure out that their planned no-strings-attached night was with each other. It was meant to be!

Beyond the relationship with Trevor and Faye, there are some nice moments with their siblings. As a result of having to suddenly be the owner of the family company and guardian of her little sister, Harry, Faye has kind of pushed aside any personal relationship she and Harry have. They are essentially strangers. But there is nice growth between them as they get to know one another. And Harry and Trevor’s brother, Basil, are just adorable! I really hope there is a story there for them someday!

I just adored this story. It’s hopeful, it’s romantic, and it had a wonderful HEA! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katy Regnery started her writing career by enrolling in a short story class in January 2012. One year later, she signed her first contract, and Katy’s first novel was published in September 2013.

Blurb:

I never set out to be famous. It sort of fell into my lap.
Just like Finn.

He was exactly what I needed in an assistant, and the exact opposite of everything I looked for in a guy, which made hiring him an easy decision.

It was perfect.
Then it wasn’t.

One by one, I started to fall for all of Finn’s imperfections, leaving me to question…

Was I simply looking for all the wrong things in a man? Or was Finn perfect because he was imperfect?

IMG_6820.jpeg

EXCERPT:

“So, you have a man working for you? A new assistant?”
My mother was never one to waste time getting to the point.
“Ma,” I sighed as I tossed my head back and stared at the ceiling. “Please don’t make a big deal out of this. My work has become too much for Gia. She can’t manage her full-time job and helping me, so I decided to hire someone.”
“I don’t like it.”
“You don’t like what, Ma?”
“He’s trying to take advantage of you. You are young and gorgeous. And single…right?”
This woman made me groan more than getting a bikini wax.
I rolled my eyes. “Yes, I’m single. Thanks for pointing that out.”
“Then that explains it.”
“Explains what?” This conversation would go ‘round and ‘round without getting anywhere.
“Why he’s interested in you. There aren’t male assistants, Mady.”
“Mama, he really is an assistant—and a good one at that. I had my doubts in the beginning, too. In fact, I almost didn’t hire him simply because he’s a guy.”
“What changed your mind?”
“He pleaded his case, and he had a very valid point, so I agreed to give him a try.”
She tsked and shook her head, disapproval wafting off her like fragrance from a perfume shop. “You think ‘because’ is a valid point. You’re too gullible most times.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh, how I adored these two! Together, Maddy and Finn are perfectly imperfect!

From the moment they meet — She mistakenly believed he’d be a she — to all of their quirks, insecurities and arguments, I was rooting hard for these two.

I liked that Finn is the assistant to Maddy, rather than the other way around. There’s a delicate balance between these two as he tries to help her build her brand, yet not overstep as her boyfriend or put her down as not being a strong enough businesswoman.

But eventually the lines between their personal and professional lives blur. Finn is a confident guy, but he ends up letting his insecurities get the best of him. Still kind of beaten down from his divorce, he sabotages things when the going gets rough and turns the blame onto Maddy. At least he is man enough to realize that he screwed up and their reunion is worth the wait!

While this is a standalone, it’s set in the same world and timeline as The UnEXpected Plan, as Maddy and Brooke are friends. While the girls all hang out and there are some scenes that also took place in Brooke’s book, there’s nothing that carries over that you would need to know about.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Break The Rules, by Roxie Noir

BTR - BT banner.jpg

Some lines shouldn’t be crossed.

Some rules shouldn’t be broken.

June is one of them, and I know it.

Break the Rules, an all-new hilarious, brother’s best friend romance from Roxie Noir, is available now!

RN_BreaktheRules_Ebook

As a forest ranger, I believe in the simple life. I prefer cabins to apartments, trails to freeways, and trees to people. My life is orderly, predictable, and quiet.

Until it’s hit by a woman I never saw coming — Hurricane June.

She’s fierce. She’s feisty. She has a laugh like the first day of spring, and she’s so pretty that I can’t breathe when I look at her. June will only be in town for a few months—just while job-hunting. She won’t last until winter, but how can I resist?

Except I have to. She’s my best, oldest, and most loyal friend’s baby sister.

Betraying him would be the worst thing I’ve ever done. Not betraying him might be the hardest.

Especially once we start working together on a secret project. All this spending time together, sneaking around at night, and lying to her brother about what we’re doing sure feels like more than friendship.

June might break my heart. Her brother might break my nose.

But I guess some things were made to be broken.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Break The Rules is a feel-good, brother’s best friend romance. June blows into Levi’s life like a hurricane, making the shy recluse even more awkward as they start spending time together. And when they team up to solve the mystery of who has been cutting down old trees in the forests, the walls between them come down and — of course — they fall for one another.

I liked that they both had unrequited crushes on one another, and Levi was a bit of a bumbling idiot around her. I found that so charming! The forbidden-romance factor comes into play because Levi thinks June’s brother would kill him for dating his little sister. (I didn’t think that was such a big deal when all was said and done, honestly.) There is a breakup that happens due to a miscommunication. A predictable plot twist that could have been avoided, but it sets the stage for a Grand Gesture that is hopelessly romantic.

Although Break The Rules is part of a series, I have not read the others and found that it stood on its own. June and Levi are absolutely adorable together.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt

I like this side of Levi. It’s a side I’ve only ever seen glimpses of before in the past two weeks — sweet, slightly goofy, teasing and funny, different from the serious, quiet man I thought he was. It’s a strange revelation, but a good one, even if I wish I liked it less.

“One minute,” I tell him, and pull back from the window.

I shut it. I pull the curtains closed.
I wonder what I’m doing and why on earth Levi has shown up beneath my bedroom window at twelve-thirty in the morning. I wish that the sight of him down there had made me feel differently, that I was indifferent and vaguely curious instead of suddenly buzzing and feeling like I’m being lifted aloft by several large birds.

I tiptoe down the stairs and through the living room, still wondering. I haven’t heard from him at all since we ate pizza in the back of his truck two nights ago, and I wish that didn’t bother me. I wish I thought less about him sitting there, as night fell, laughing and showing me his cell phone or telling me that he’s an alien.

I wish I thought less about him, period.

When I get outside, Levi’s leaning against his truck, his shoulder-length hair out of its usual knot.

I’m not sure I remember seeing him with his hair down before. He looks different. Relaxed. Like himself.

“I named the dog,” he says as I walk up to him.

I don’t know what I was expecting him to say, but that wasn’t it.

“You do know that the last time a man came to my window, I called my brother to get rid of him,” I say. “I’m sure he told you about that.”

“He certainly did,” Levi said. “And if I were in my right mind, it might have deterred me.”

“You’re in your wrong mind, then?” I ask, tilting my head slightly, keeping my voice down.

“You didn’t ask what I named the dog,” he says.

“Did you come here at twelve-thirty in the morning to tell me you named your dog?” I ask.

Levi smiles, holds out one hand. I step forward and take it, his skin warm and he enfolds my fingers in his.

“No,” he says. “I came here to say that I think you should come back to my place for a nightcap.”

“A nightcap?”

“Yes,” he says. “I’d like to take you home, fix you a drink, and seduce you, and I’d like to do it without thinking even once of your brother.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

This was a relatively short and sweet childhood friends/friends to lovers romance. Childhood best friends Lucas and Savannah dated, broke up, got involved with others, fought because they were jealous, got back together — over and over again. Like a broken record. Then one day, a miscommunication leads them to not speaking to one another for years.

Until the day that Lucas walks back into Savi’s life. But she has her act together, a great job, a boyfriend… and Lucas turns that world upside down. Will Savi give Lucas a second chance? It’s a story full of angst and a couple with hot chemistry.

There are alot of supporting characters in this story, characters from the previous books. (Which I’m sure is why I didn’t love love love them the way some early reviewers did.) I have not read any of the other books in this series, but my interest is piqued enough that I want to check it out. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
