Sunny Shelly’s Review: Shadows of You by Catherine Cowles

💜SHADOWS OF YOU IS LIVE💜

Get ready to fall for Roan and Aspen in their grumpy-sunshine, single mom, small town romance, from USA Today Bestselling Author, Catherine Cowles!

It was supposed to be a fresh start. A small town where I could hide my little girl from the shadows that haunt us. A place where I could keep us safe.

The last thing I expected was him.

A surly, broody mountain of a man who helps me save an injured deer in a snowstorm.

Now, Roan Hartley keeps showing up with his glowers and grimaces. But they only make his rare smiles and the gentle way he talks to my daughter mean that much more.

When forces from my past find us, Roan is determined to keep us safe—even if that means sleeping on my ancient couch every night.

As days turn to weeks, his touch has my walls crashing down. But someone out there doesn’t want me to find happiness. He doesn’t want me left breathing at all…

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh my heart! I am a sucker for a broody, broken, loner or a hero, and I knew as soon as Roan was introduced in Whispers of You that I would love him. And I did! Roan and Aspen’s story is so beautiful, and I adored seeing how protective he was of her and little Cady!

Once again, Catherine Cowles crafted a wonderful story that is full of heart and heart, with a gripping suspense. Aspen has lived a quiet life, raising her daughter and keeping to herself, not wanting the truth about their past to come to light. Roan lives an even quieter life, having turned almost reclusive after his brother’s girlfriend was attacked years ago and he was briefly a suspect. They collide in a beautiful way, and they bring so much to each other’s lives.

Maxine Mitchell and Zachary Webber did a phenomenal job in narrating this story. I don’t know how he did it, but Zachary sounded so broken and defeated during certain crucial moments, and it made me love Roan even more!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Problem With Dating by Brittainy C. Cherry

The Problem with Dating by Brittainy Cherry is now live!

If I had to choose a person to hate, Alex Ramírez would’ve been first on the list…

Welcome to Honey Creek, Illinois, where life was as sweet as the town’s name suggested. That was, until Mr. Fine Dining himself, Alex Ramírez, rolled into town with a permanent scowl and decided to park his snooty five-star restaurant across from my cozy dog daycare. He was tall, dark, and about as warm as a frozen entrée.

After one too many unpleasant interactions, I was determined to stay out of his way and to keep him out of mine.

But fate had a quirky sense of humor. When Alex inherited his great-aunt’s cranky canine, he had no choice but to come to me, the local dog whisperer, for help. As for me? I needed a fake boyfriend to ward off my ex-husband, who was determined to win me back.

So, we struck a deal: I’d turn his dog into the town’s best-behaved pet, and in return, he’d be my arm candy for a few family events and social gatherings. Simple, uncomplicated, and absolutely not romantic—at least, that was what we told ourselves.

As we played house, I couldn’t help but notice that underneath Alex’s prickly shell was a dash of charm that wasn’t listed in the ingredients. Our pretend dates started to feel a little too real. And our feigned kisses? They were getting laughably close to crossing the line. Suddenly our interactions felt less like a food fight and more like foreplay.

With every playful touch and lingering glance, I couldn’t help but wonder: Was this fake relationship with Alex secretly penning its own authentic ending? Or was I risking it all for something that was nothing more than make-believe?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Problem With Dating is one of those feel-good romcoms that you can just envision as a made-for-TV movie. It’s a pretty perfect story about a quirky pet shop owner, the small town’s darling, and the fish-out-of-water, city-slicker grumpy chef whom the townsfolk are trying to run out of town. Add in some ex-drama on both sides and a fake relationship and this book checks off all the boxes.

Alex and Yara were absolutely adorable together. Goldie (aka Golden Retriever) and Mr. Black Cat complemented each other perfectly. They most definitely got off on the wrong foot, as every great enemies-to-lovers story does, but as Yara got to know the sweet guy underneath the hardened facade, Alex bloomed as she brought sunshine back into his lonely existence and jump-started his heart.

The Problem With Dating was a breath of fresh air! And very unlike the angsty, emotional stories I’ve come to love from Brittainy C. Cherry. But just because it’s not angsty does not mean it isn’t emotional! And I loved every minute of it.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Obsession Falls by Claire Kingsley

Obsession Falls by Claire Kingsley is NOW LIVE!

He’ll risk it all to protect her.

Someone is stalking Audrey Young. And she has no idea why.

It’s bad enough that she’s back in Tilikum. But Audrey’s good at making the best of things and her new job at the small-town newspaper is just a way to get back on her feet.

Complicating matters is her landlord and new neighbor, Josiah Haven.

She doesn’t usually go for the big, surly lumberjack type. But there’s something about that broody man. He intimidates her a little, but she kind of likes it.

She could totally handle the mess that is her life, except the strange feeling of being watched is just the beginning. Next thing Audrey knows, she’s a target, and she doesn’t know who’s behind it, or why.

For Josiah Haven, none of that makes her his problem.

She’s just the girl next door. Fine, the frustratingly hot girl next door. But Audrey is all sunshine and her goofy dog isn’t any better. Josiah is too stoic. Too solitary. Too guarded. He doesn’t need a woman in his life, especially one who threatens to crack his heart wide open.

But Josiah is a protector and he can’t let Audrey’s troubles go unanswered, even if he has to risk everything—his life and his heart—to keep her safe.

Author’s Note: a grumpy loner meets his match in a sunshiney dog lover who’s a little down on her luck. And once he falls, he falls HARD. It’s small-town romantic suspense with CK’s signature humor, endearing characters, and heartwarming happily ever after.

Obsession Falls can be read as a stand-alone.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Ah, it was so good to be back in Tilikum! And it was so nice to get to know you, Josiah Haven!

Obsession Falls is the first book in the new Haven Brothers series by Claire Kingsley, which is a spinoff of the Bailey Brother series, and takes place about 6 years after Annika Haven and Levi Bailey brought the two feuding families together. I absolutely fell in love with Josiah from the prologue. My heart broke for him! Between his dating history and his bio mom abandoning him, it’s no wonder that Josiah had sworn off love. But when Audrey moves into the rental property next door to the house he’s renovating, he’s immediately drawn to her. And when it comes to light that someone is stalking Audrey, this grumpy lumberjack goes all alpha male in protecting her.

I adored the relationship between Josiah and Audrey. Such a nice friendship forms between them at first, as they both deny the growing feelings between them. She’s recently moved back to the area and only plans to be in Tilikum temporarily, and he has sworn off relationships. Yet somehow, they turned out to be exactly what the other needed. Josiah and Audrey’s first kiss may have knocked Chase and Brynn (Forbidden Miles) off my favorite first-kiss list!

In the midst of all the swoony and sweet romance, Claire Kingsley weaves in the captivating suspense of Audrey’s stalker. There are some twists and turns as to the stalker’s identity, and the whole heroine-in-danger really brings out the protective side of Josiah. For a guy who isn’t very good with showing his emotions, Josiah really turns out to be quite the ideal boyfriend!

As a fan of the Bailey Brothers series, I loved the cameos by the Baileys, especially the scene toward the end when Josiah goes to Asher’s house for some advice. And the Tilikum squirrels are back in action! Can we give an honorable mention to Aunt Louise? She reminded me of Betty White’s character in Hot In Cleveland, and I can’t wait to see more of her meddling!

Obsession Falls was a wonderful start to a new series, and I can’t wait to meet the rest of the Haven brothers! Connor Crais and Ava Erickson did a marvelous job bringing Josiah and Audrey to life. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Carlie Jean is a new-to-me author and I am so glad I took the chance to read Promise Me! Aurora and Cameron’s friends-to-lovers story was swoony and sweet and I loved every minute of it!

Aurora and Cameron are both college seniors. He’s a bit of a nerd, she’s a star on the volleyball team with aspirations to go to the Olympics. But she got too focused on her training and she’s at risk of failing a class. Her dad, the dean of the college, assigns her to the college’s tutoring program, which is where she meets Cameron. Sweet, giant, cinnamon roll Cameron. He’s a bit of a jerk to her at their first session, mainly because he’s wildly attracted to her — he’d been cheated on by his high school girlfriend, also an athlete, and assumes that Aurora is entitled as the dean’s daughter.

A sweet friendship forms between these two over their tutoring sessions. There’s a definite attraction between them as well, but they are both laser-focused on their career plans and don’t want to get sidetracked with a relationship. But Cam and Aurora can only resist each other for so long, and when they finally, finally share their first kiss… that slow burn was worth the wait!

I loved how protective Cam was, not only of Aurora but also of his mom and sister. He’s a beast of a guy, but such a softie underneath that burly, muscular exterior. And even though he’s a virgin, he really knew how to take charge! Those scenes were steamy!

Overall, this book was a wonderful read. Low-angst, no outside drama, and just good old-fashioned romance!

I read an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Blurb:

Johnny Bishop crashed into my life like a hurricane. Not once, but twice.

The first time, we were teenagers. He was the star quarterback destined to save our small town’s high school team. I was the music nerd desperate to shine, but always falling short.

Until him.

Johnny was good at football, but he was great at music.  And when I realized we shared a love of performing, I fell for his charm. I drank in his words and was hypnotized by the way he sang. I was never fully in the spotlight with him, but the way he held onto me and kept me close felt good enough. His star was bright enough for both of us, and his dreams were worth all the risks, even if they were my dreams first.

But when he left our town–leaving me in it–the damage in his wake was devastating.  I spent a decade trying to piece together my broken heart. A decade trying to avoid his music, a nearly impossible feat considering he was selling out arenas and piling up Grammys. While he tore through city after city, I built a quiet life as a music teacher in my hometown.

I’d made peace with the fact that a now-famous rockstar once held my hand and told me he loved me. But when he shows up unannounced, begging for help, I’m sucked right back into his gravitational pull.

I want to hate him. I want to punish him for turning his back on me. But I can’t when he’s so broken. And the more time we spend in our present talking about our past, the more I start to wonder if maybe Johnny left to save us all from the storm.

Maybe that story about me and the famous rockstar has a lot more story to be told.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Moon and Back is a messy, glorious, raw, vulnerable, second-chance rockstar romance. Johnny and Brynn’s story was a heartbreaking one, but out of the ashes of their torched relationship comes something beautiful.

The story begins when Johnny and Brynn are seniors in high school. He’s a new-to-town football star and she’s in the marching band. While they are on opposite ends of the high school social strata, Brynn and Johnny are kindred souls and have an immediate connection. He does not have the best home life, and Brynn quickly becomes his safe place. As she introduces him to her love of music, their friendship blooms into a hot and heavy teenage romance — but then one day, Johnny essentially disappears, leaving Brynn heartbroken, confused and angry.

Ten years later, Brynn is the music teacher at their old high school and Johnny is a music superstar. While he should be on top of the world, Johnny has been battling his inner demons for a long time and has nowhere else to turn but than to ask his high school sweetheart for help. Brynn never got over the way Johnny ghosted her, however, and isn’t too quick to forgive him. Will these two be able to get past their past?

The story unfolds through past and present chapters, and I loved getting the background and history between these two characters. It’s told from Brynn’s POV, and I really would have loved to have gotten Johnny’s perspective. This story is full of so much angst, but the payoff is well worth the wait!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Don’t Forget Me Tomorrow is the second book in AL Jackson’s Time River series, featuring Dakota and Ryder, both of whom made appearances in the first book as she is Paisley’s best friend and he is Caleb’s cousin.

Even though Ryder is best friends with her brother, Cody, he and Dakota have always had a friendship and connection of their own. And they have both secretly been in love with one another for years. But she believes he sees her as nothing more than Cody’s little sister, and he believes he’s tainted due to his past transgressions and isn’t good enough for her. And of course, Cody has forbidden Ryder from going anywhere near his sister. But when Dakota and her young son Kayden are in danger, Ryder takes them in, and the sexual tension between the two of them reaches an all-new high.

I loved watching these two dance around each other. I loved how easily they cohabitate together, and how utterly devoted Ryder was as “uncle” to little Kayden. But while things were easy inside their bubble, there were forces working against them, particularly Ryder’s past. I loved how Jackson weaves together suspense and romance in her stories. Dakota and Ryder’s story is full of twists and turns, and it’s not an easy road for these two. And I was completely captivated by the journey!

Sunny Shelly’s Review

Mr. Hook-up was fantastic! I loved the concept in the THEN part of this story, as “Love” and “Mr. Boston” connect on a dating app designed for the perfect one-night stand. There is sizzling chemistry between them, and instant spark, and their chat conversations are riddled with sexual tension. While they only meet in person briefly, it’s a memorable experience for them both. Unfortunately for Easton, Love’s phone was disconnected shortly afterwards and he always wondered whatever happened to her…

Five years later, “Love” and Easton cross paths again when Drake starts working at his company, and it’s a shock to them both. It was the wrong time for something more to happen between them five years ago, but are things different now?

I really enjoyed Drake and Easton’s story, how their connection was still there all these years later, and the push and pull between them as they navigate their relationship and find their footing as a couple. I also enjoyed getting to know his business partners, and look forward to seeing the other guys find love!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Scout by Carina Rose

Title: The Scout
Author: Carina Rose
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Tropes: Single Mom/Second Chance/Small Town
Release Date: October 3, 2023
BLURB
From Carina Rose comes a sexy second-chance, single-mom romance.
Hannah
I suppose it was unfair of me to assume Cash Jameson would be my forever. The golden boy of Blossom Berry Falls went from high school baseball star to the major leagues. Then he broke my heart.
So many times I wanted to tell him about our son, but fate stepped in, and years went by. Being a single mom has been my biggest accomplishment. Though it hasn’t always been easy, the joys of being a mom have granted meaning to the pain of losing Cash.
Now, fifteen years later, we meet again thanks to our high school reunion’s alumni baseball game. Cash had no way of knowing that the young pitcher who struck him out was his son. But after he showed up at the door scouting the ace for the major leagues, I have no doubt he experienced the shock of his life.
Cash
Saying goodbye to Hannah was the hardest thing I’d ever done. Afraid of causing more pain, I never intended to set foot back in Blossom Berry Falls. Yet the draw of the alumni baseball game . . . and the chance to see Hannah again . . . were too powerful to resist.
After spotting Hannah in the stands, my heart sparked to life. I’d thought of her over the years but heard she’d moved on. Rather than harp on what could have been, I focused on the future—namely, the kid with the nasty curveball.
His control reminded me of myself at that age. Turned out there was a good reason for that . . . the young prodigy was the son I never knew I had. I’d missed so much of his life and refused to miss more.
Could the three of us to be a family? Or were the wounds of our past too deep to heal?

The Scout is the kind of story that you can just picture so vividly as a made-for-TV movie. I loved everything about this story!

Hannah and Cash come face to face 15 years after their breakup when he’s in town for the alumni baseball game. There’s one kid on the roster who makes quite an impression on Cash, and with good reason: it’s his own son, Jimmy. So technically, this story isn’t a “secret baby” but a secret teenager book. But in any event, it was phenomenal.

I loved everything about Hannah and Cash’s reunion, and how Jimmy played into it. Who are they now? Can they get over the hurts of the past and move forward as a family? This low-drama story left me with a smile on my face and it’s one I will definitely be re-reading!

Wow, Jennifer Hartmann did not disappoint with The Stars Are On Our Side. It’s set in the “Matchmaker” world, as Tabitha was one of Earl’s victims, and takes place after the events of Still Beating while Cora and Dean are doing their long-distance relationship. For the full effect, I strongly suggest reading both Still Beating as well as Lotus, as Gabe’s stepbrother and best friend are Oliver and Sydney from that book and he played a big part in it as well.

Tabitha and Gabe’s story is not an easy one to read. They both have physical and mental scars that run deep. He is head over heels in love with her, but Tabitha is so reluctant to let herself fall for a man again after her ordeal. She feels so strongly for Gabe, yet is so afraid to take that step. And he is so patient and kind with her, to the detriment of his own mental health.

In addition to the emotional journey these two must overcome to get to their HEA, there is an element of suspense that weaves throughout the book as well that threatens to destroy any chance of happiness Gabe and Tabitha may have in the future.

The Stars Are On Our Side is a hefty book, but one that is so well worth the read! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Meet Jennifer

Jennifer Hartmann resides in northern Illinois with her own personal romance hero and three children. When she is not writing angsty love stories, she is likely pondering all the ways she can break your heart and piece it back together again. She enjoys sunsets (because mornings are hard), bike riding, traveling, bingeing Buffy the Vampire Slayer reruns, and that time of day when coffee gets replaced by wine. She loves tacos. She also really, really wants to pet your dog.

Jude Whittingham didn’t expect his football season would be spent in the stands recovering from injury. With rest and rehab his primary focus, Jude finds his mind is becoming as messed up as his Achilles tendon. It doesn’t help that Neva, one of his many ex-girlfriends, and the team’s nutritionist, has now been assigned to his case.

Neva has more to worry about than dealing with Jude. After a series of disastrous dates and time-wasting relationships, her hope of having a baby is fading. Neva’s problem – no one has passed the audition phase or come close to being father material. Well, since Jude.

When a family seems to be out of reach for Neva, not only does Jude find out about her baby dream, but he also offers to help her out. Neva can’t think of a practical reason to say no, apart from the fact that their past should probably be left exactly there.

Jude might be able to give her a baby, but just because he can, does it mean she should?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I read Red Heart Card while I was huddled under a blanket battling a cold, and it was a perfect no-drama story to get lost in. Neva and Jude had a fling a few years ago, but she broke things off after a pregnancy scare, having realized that she was falling for him and figuring that she needed to settle down with someone closer to her age. Now, Jude is recovering after an injury and needs something to focus his attention on while he rehabs — and when he overhears Neva say that she wants to have a baby, he offers up his services. And if he’s lucky, Jude can convince Neva to give him another shot.

I thought this story was so charming. Aside from an overabundance of graphic menstrual-related descriptions that I thought were a bit unnecessary. I get that the baby pact was the central theme, but could have done without those graphic descriptions and instead a passing comment. But I digress…. Neva and Jude had such a lovely connection. I adored the golden retriever side of Jude and how devoted he was to Neva. The age gap didn’t bother him, but she was so hung up on it. I loved seeing her eventually let down her walls and let him in.

Overall, this was a lovely story by a new-to-me author. It is a standalone in a series; I haven’t read any of the other books, and had no issues following along.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
