Sunny Shelly’s Review: An Unfinished Memory by Marie Johnston

AN UNFINISHED MEMORY

Marie Johnston

Release Date: February 15

Blurb:

I never keep secrets from my best friend, but I’m not sure how to tell her I’m sneaking around with her brother…who’s also my ex-husband.

I might be single, but I’m not ready to mingle. I should’ve stayed home from the street dance. My feet are barely surviving the two-step and my dance partners are looking for dates while I’m only interested in forgetting the man I was once married to.

The night’s about to end with bruised toes and a rain storm when the guy who swept me off my feet years ago cuts in right before the downpour starts. Wilder Knight has always been the best dance partner I’ve ever had. Just not the best husband.

Once the storm hits, we take refuge in his pickup, but that isn’t all we do. After steaming up the windows and losing my underwear, I make a habit out of hooking up with my ex-husband.

Only the longer we continue, the easier it is to see why our marriage fell apart. I couldn’t get over him the first time and losing him a second time might destroy the secure life I’ve built for myself, leaving me to ask… Were we better left an unfinished memory?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I have been waiting for Sutton and Wilder’s story from the beginning of the Oil Knights series, and it did not disappoint! Second-chance romances between a divorced couple are a favorite microtrope of mine, and I really enjoyed how Marie Johnston wrote these two characters.

Wilder and Sutton clearly still love each other despite their divorce and still have wicked chemistry. But when they start sneaking around secretly, the issues that tore up their marriage linger in the background. Wilder and Sutton have both changed because of their marriage ending, and they need to get to know who the other person is now. As they start spending more time together, they need to figure out how to navigate their new relationship.

The journey to a HEA for Sutton and Wilder is kind of messy, but I loved going along for the ride!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Heart To Heart by Sara Furlong Burr

The more time I spend with Avery, the more I’m second-guessing everything I thought I wanted, and the harder it is to keep my hands off her.

Heart to Heart, an all-new forced proximity, celebrity romance from award-winning author Sara Furlong Burr is now available!

Avery

Applying to be a contestant on a reality dating show is the last thing I ever thought I would do…Well, aside from actually being on a reality dating show, that is. But here I am on Heart to Heart, hoping to come in second place.

Yes, second place.

I know how crazy that sounds, especially since this season’s love interest is none other than Tristan Tate, the former Sexiest Action Star Alive, and my teenage crush.

Oh, who am I kidding? He’s my today crush, too.

But I can’t think of Tristan or how his lips or his rock-hard body would feel pressed against mine. Not when my parents are in dire financial straits and the prize money awarded to the runner-up would solve all their problems.

Besides, it’s not like I have a chance with Tristan, anyway.

Or do I?

Tristan

One night of stupidity left my career in shambles, but with my new agent at the helm, I’m ready for a comeback. I just have to get through this reality television gig, win viewers over, and not fall for any of the contestants. If I can manage that, I’ll have my career back, provided a wrench doesn’t get thrown into the whole thing.

Enter Avery Martin: the wrench.

Avery stumbled into my life, quite literally, and I haven’t been able to get her out of my mind since then.

And that’s a huge problem.

Because the more time I spend with Avery, the more I’m second-guessing everything I thought I wanted, and the harder it is to keep my hands off her.

Keep reading for a look inside Heart to Heart!

“Cut.”

Frustrated, Kiki tossed her phone on the table, her hands shooting up to her forehead, where she furiously massaged her temples. “You know you have to actually say something, right? I mean, I’m all for the sultry, mysterious bedroom eyes thing, but your eyes look like they just caught sight of your parents doing it on the dining room table.”

“First, thanks for that visual right before bed. Secondly, can’t I just send in a written response with some photos or something?”

“Afraid not.” She picked up her phone and turned the screen so that I could see the official rules for applying to Heart to Heart spelled out in front of me.

Initial submissions had to be emailed no later than midnight tonight with a video of the prospective contestants describing what love meant to them. Who knew a show famous for backstabbing and over-the-top dramatic outbursts, once involving a woman brandishing a purple dildo, would ask its applicants to answer such a deep question? I was expecting to complete a questionnaire asking me for my favorite color and bra size and then calling it a day, not waxing eloquently about love for a show that sometimes felt to be the very antithesis of the word.

“This was a bad idea,” I groaned, resting my forehead against the table. “I’ll just have to sell a kidney. I’m sure it would be far less painful than this.”

“Livers fetch more on the black market.”

“I don’t want to know how you even know that.” I lifted my head back up to see Kiki still fiddling with her phone.

“A girl has to explore all her options.” She glanced up from its screen, eyebrows raised. “Are we doing this or not? Ethan’s coming over in about twenty. The Red Sox won, and you know he gets in a certain kind of way about his team from a city he’s never even visited.”

I shuddered. “Thanks for the warning and also for the reminder to never go to a game with the two of you.” Defeated, I slumped back in my chair. “I don’t know. Maybe it’s too soon for me to adequately answer that question. Guy ruined love for me. I don’t know what it is anymore.”

“We don’t talk about Guy,” Kiki shot back in a sing-song Disney princess voice, promptly following it up with a “no, no, no!”

“Cute.”

“I do my best.” She threw her long, jet black, Pantene-perfect hair, with newly dyed magenta tips, over her shoulder as she tapped the corner of her phone against her chin. “Look, perhaps we’re approaching this all wrong. Love doesn’t have to be romantic. It doesn’t have to be all reverse cowgirl with SportsCenter playing highlights of the game on repeat in the background. Love can be the love you have for your family. That kind of love can’t be tainted by some fickle asshole with an Austen complex. You see what I’m saying?”

“There was a lot to unpack there, but I think I can parse through it.”

Kiki smiled. “What you’re trying to do for your family, that’s love, Ave.”

I nodded through tears as I thought about everything my parents had done for me through the years, all the things they were still doing and missing out on in their lives for the sake of me and Josh. Guy had never been willing to make those kinds of compromises in his life; he had never been willing to bend, choosing instead to break me to spare himself the inconvenience.

So, I took a deep breath and searched my feelings, putting Guy completely aside as I let the words fly out. Not sure whether they made sense, but just hoping for something usable for the producers of Heart to Heart.

“Love is putting others’ dreams ahead of your own, even if it means letting them shine while you stand on the sidelines, cheering them on. Love is knowing that sometimes you have to fall so that others can rise. It’s having each other’s back, making sure they know they’re not alone, that there’s always someone by their side regardless of whether they’re walking in the dark or toward the light.”

“Shit,” Kiki’s voice snapped me out of my reverie. “Where was that an hour and twenty percent of my battery life ago?”

“Do you think that works—did I answer the question?”

“Are you kidding me? I think you need to start packing your bags in three, two, one.” She tapped the screen on her phone, seemingly satisfied with herself. “Submitted.”

“Now we wait.” I exhaled a shaky breath, already regretting my decision in a confusing conflict of emotions. On the one hand, afraid of rejection and, on the other, of being chosen.

“My bestie is going to be on Heart to Heart,” Kiki squealed, covering her mouth with her hands.

“I’m sure they received a million emails. Mine will probably be lost in the sea.”

“Not with the nudes I slipped in there, it won’t.”

“Kiki!”

“Settle down, woman. I only sent the one of you in your Cookie Monster onesie.”

“Okay, you can quit with the jokes, Keeks.”

The smile slowly faded away from her face as she replied, “Joke—yes. That was most definitely a joke.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

This clever romcom is set at a dating reality show, where Plain Jane Avery is hoping to take *second place* so she can win the cash prize and bail out her family’s struggling bakery. Even though the bachelor star of the show is Tristan, her forever celebrity crush.

Heart to Heart was cleverly written. Tristan could have been a real jerk, and he was actually a really sweet guy — with a conscience, no less! I loved how conflicted he was about having Avery among the contestants. He knew she was capable of being eaten alive by the vipers of the bunch, and he was hooked by how genuine she was. Tristan was swoony, Avery was quirky, and together they were super cute! But will the attraction they feel in the bubble of the reality show translate to the real world?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: My Anti-Hero by Tijan

MY ANTI-HERO by Tijan

I shouldn’t have agreed to this. What was I thinking?

Appearing on a local news show? Just because something happened to me?

I live mostly in isolation on purpose.

But here I am.

I was so nervous that I needed the make-up chair, twice.

And then I walked past his room.

He’s a giant—no softness, all muscle.

And a rich beard that made me want to rub myself all over it.

He made me see stars, literally because the second time I saw him, I tripped.

Or I would’ve, but he caught me, and the cameras were rolling.

Soon, that clip will be trending because he wasn’t just another guest on the show.

He’s Brett Broudou, the Kings’ newest football star.

We couldn’t be more opposite.

The only special thing about me is the reason I was on the show.

Brett, the Super Bowl champion, and me, the survivor who helped bring down the infamous Midwest Butcher.

Brett might not think he’s anyone’s hero, but he’s about to become mine.

My Anti-Hero is a bit instalove, and a bit romantic suspense. Billie is the sole survivor of a serial killer’s attack, who lives her life more or less as a recluse. While appearing on a news program to talk about the incident, Billie crosses paths with football star Brett, whose team recently won the Super Bowl. Quite literally crosses paths when she trips and falls right in front of him!

There’s an immediate attraction between Billie and Brett, and their relationship runs deep. They both have traumatic pasts, and there’s work they both have to put in to make the relationship work. There are some very dark themes in this book, and some *really* messed-up situations with Billie’s family. Brett comes across as an overbearing alphahole at times, but I liked how he became her constant.

Teddy Hamilton is one of my favorite narrators, and I loved listening to him and Andi Arndt together in this sexy romance! Duet narration is my new favorite thing, and I loved how they worked together to bring Brett and Billie to life.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Made For You by Renee Harless

MADE FOR YOU

Renee Harless

Release Date: February 13

Blurb:

Heading to a teachers’ conference hundreds of miles away from my small town should have been a nice break. Until I was propositioned by a stranger to be his wife for the next six months. And for whatever reason, I said yes.

Talon Beckett was a domineering billionaire with a steely-blue gaze that made me forget my own name. It was my excuse for agreeing to his terms…that and he agreed to play up our recent vows when we attended my ex’s wedding.

We both decided that we’d go our separate ways when our six months were up. He’d get full control of his bank account and the hotel chain that bared his mother’s maiden name, and I’d get whatever I needed in return.

When our time was coming to an end, I realized the one thing I wanted was something he had no desire to give. It was the affectionate side he’d kept hidden from everyone despite his need to say, “My Wife” when we were out in public. And as I crossed the days off the calendar, it was harder to remember that our marriage wasn’t real. Especially when we needed to sign those termination papers.

I feared I’d lose not only my new last name and job, but my heart along the way.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Made For You is a sweet and spicy billionaire, fake marriage, grumpy/sunshine romance that left me smiling.

Talon and Aurora’s meet-cute was one of the most awkward, but it perfectly suited them. He’s a grumpy, closed-off billionaire who needs to marry to properly inherit his birthright. After scouting women among those attending a teacher’s convention at one of his family’s hotels for potential candidates, he decides that Aurora fits the bill nicely. Although she’s hesitant at first, she figures she could do a lot of good for students in her small rural town with the money Talon is willing to pay her to pose as his wife.

Of course, neither of them expects to find something special in the other, but that is exactly what happens. I loved seeing Talon open up to the possibility of love and his personal growth while with Aurora. She’s a bright light in his dull world, and he becomes a different person as he falls in love with her.

There is some family drama on both sides (mostly his), but this book was a charming (and spicy!) story that I enjoyed reading very much!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

When The Stars Rise is a rollercoaster of emotions and angst as childhood besties and exes Noah, an extreme athlete, and Hayley, Hayley, figure out if they are meant to be forever.

There is so much love between these two, and this book is full of angst as they attempt to settle their past and build a future together. As childhood best friends, there is a lot of shared history between Noah and Hayley — and that’s not even accounting for the fact that they are technically stepsiblings. (Lila’s pregnancy with Noah was a huge bulk of Book #1 When The Stars Fall, and Hayley was given up for adoption by Shiloh, who later came back to look for her in Book #2 When The Storm Breaks. They were not raised as siblings, as Hayley was raised by her adoptive family, and the truth about her parentage didn’t come to light until they were in grade school.) So yeah, the dynamics between Noah and Hayley are complex, to put it mildly.

But while it’s clear that Noah and Hayley’s love runs deep, there is also a ton of shared trauma that they need to deal with before they can move forward. It’s messy and complicated…

So, having read the other books in this series, I enjoyed WtSR, but it wasn’t my favorite of the bunch. I don’t think that WtSR is a standalone. There are a lot of references to things that happened in previous books; I had to go back and re-read portions of Brody & Shiloh’s to connect the dots more than once. This book also ties in Emery Rose’s Love & Chaos series, as Noah and Hayley are friends with the kids from those characters. I thought that there was a lot of “tell” and not enough “show” in this book, and that’s a sticking point for me.

That said, I very much enjoyed the emotional rollercoaster that Noah and Hayley went on, even though it’s a long and bumpy road to their HEA!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Catherine Cowles wraps up the Lost & Found series nicely with Lawson and Hallie’s story in Ashes of You!

This story delivers all the feels. There’s that grand tension between single dad Lawson and his younger nanny, which is only complicated by the fact that Law is Hallie’s hero, “Blue,” who rescued her from a deranged lunatic five years ago. They never knew what happened to the other after the night he rescued her, but their worlds collide when she shows up on an interview to be the nanny for his three sons. That backstory just added so much to this single dad, age-gap, nanny romance.

The relationships that Hallie cultivates with the boys are wonderfully created as well. There is depth to all of those bonds, especially with sulky teenager Luke. Hallie gets to him in a way that no one else seems to be able to, and I loved how much he changed as a result of their friendship. I have loved getting to know the Hartley family throughout this series. They love hard, and they surround Hallie with friendship and love, and give her a warm place that she doesn’t have in her own fractured family. I was so glad to see her brother Emmett and his husband be taken into the Hartley family fold!

As with the other books in this series, there is a thread of mystery running through the story, as the serial killer who abducted Hallie seems to be on the loose again. Is it a copycat? Is she actually in danger? There are some twists and turns with that subplot that kept me guessing all the way to the final reveal. Well done!

Sebastian York and Ava Erickson nailed the narration for this audiobook!

While I was sad to see the Lost & Found series come to an end, I’m excited for CC’s upcoming series with Lawson’s friend, Anson!

About THE REASON I MARRIED HIM:

He proposed . . . and I said yes.
Normally a jovial occasion for a couple in love, but this proposal has a very different feel.
Because the man that I’ll be calling my husband blew into town with one thing on his mind . . . to make my life a living nightmare.

So why did I say yes?

Well, because we both need something from each other.

Namely, I want the farm land he currently owns, and he needs a wife in order to inherit his family cabin in his grandfather’s will.

So as he so eloquently put it, my hand, for his land.

At first, I thought the idea was nuts.
Who really gets married out of convenience?
Apparently, I do.

And now we have to sell our relationship to the town. Meaning, we’re holding hands, he’s pinching my cheeks . . . upper and lower. We’re even forced to share the one-bedroom guest house on the farm where his monstrous body is taking up a large percentage of the bed.

But we’re so persuasive about our farse, that now I’m starting to think he actually might like me. Especially when he grabs me by the wrist and teases the shell of my ear as he whispers, “Mine.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Meghan Quinn delivers another fantastic swoony, steamy, small-town book — complete with a gut-punch breakup and well-deserved HEA — in The Reason I Married Him.

Aubree is not the happy-go-lucky gal that her sister Hattie is. She is closed off and guarded, as a result of the abuse she suffered at the hands of their dad as a kid. It’s hard for her to trust people, and she has a lot of lingering self-esteem issues. Jilted the night before his wedding, Wyatt (who is her late brother-in-law’s brother) swoops into town to offer Aubree a deal: Marry him for a year so he can get his family’s cabin, and he will sign over his part of the farm left to him by his late brother.

Wyatt knows how to press all of Aubree’s buttons, and their banter is hilarious as this enemies-to-lovers romcom begins. But little by little, Wyatt breaks down Aubree’s walls, and they develop a genuine friendship. It shocks Aubree when she realizes that she *gasp* likes her fake husband! But just as Wyatt and Aubree decide to give their relationship a real chance, Wyatt’s past threatens to ruin any chance of their future together. Will be be able to convince Aubree that she’s the one meant for him?

Narrators Aaron Shedlock and Stella Hunter are *chef’s kiss* as they tell Wyatt and Aubree’s story in duet narration. The story arc that these characters go on was well-written, and perfectly-paced, and Shedlock and Hunter brought it all to life magnificently as they took Wyatt and Aubree from a bickering twosome at the start of the book to a couple head over heels in love by the end.

The second book in the Almond Bay series, The Reason I Married Him also delivers several MQ Easter Eggs. I love that Wyatt’s family cabin is in Canoodle, the setting of Runaway Groomsman, and I did not realize how much I missed Keiko from the teachers series until she showed up!

Is anyone else hoping that the last remaining Rowley finds his match in a certain beekeeper? Just me?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Something Like Love by Piper Rayne

Something Like Love by Piper Rayne is now live!

I want to.

I can’t.

I’ve been friends with Cooper Rice from the moment we met. He was just as famous a decade ago on our college campus as he is now being the star quarterback for the Chicago Grizzlies.

But he’s not only talented on the field, he’s also the gorgeous football star women fawn over, posing in underwear and razor ads.

Here’s a secret those women don’t know—Cooper Rice isn’t a playboy. He’s the kind of man who wants to settle down with a family. He’s content ordering pizza and massaging my feet after my long shift as an emergency room doctor. He listens to me as if he’s as invested as I am in my patients. He has never let me down.

This is exactly why I refuse to live without Cooper in my life. Eight years ago, I made him promise me that we’d never cross that line. And just like I knew Cooper would, he’s held to that promise.

Despite our best efforts, our relationship is evolving, shifting into new territory and I find myself unsure if I want Cooper to keep that promise. Ignoring the obvious could tear us apart, but so could giving in, meaning there’s a chance I’ll lose Cooper forever no matter what decision I make.

OOOH I have been waiting for Cooper and Ellery’s story from the first moment I met them at the start of the Chicago Grizzlies series, and their story was the perfect way to close out this series!

Having been best friends since college, there is so much history between Cooper and Elle. They are the perfect match; they balance each other out, complete each other’s sentences, and all that jazz. Now that Elle is dating Cooper’s teammate, their relationship is strained. And there is a line drawn in the sand of their friendship that neither one of them will cross — despite the growing feelings between them — because of a promise Cooper made Ellery eight years ago.

Piper Rayne did a fantastic job in telling this epic best friends romance. The journey that Cooper and Elle take from best friends to admitting that they are soul mates is a wonderful slow burn, written with a delicious push-and-pull, a hint of angst, and a whole lot of sizzle.

I’m sorry to see this series come to a close, but I’m excited that The Grizzlies’ “Den” is now changing hands to become “The Nest” for a new group of athletes for PR’s upcoming hockey series. And hopefully we will finally, finally, get Tweetie’s story!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Turn of the Tides by Jessica Prince

Title: Turn of the Tides
Author: Jessica Prince
Series: Whitecap

Contemporary Romance; Small Town Romance

When Beau Wade left his small hometown of Whitecap, Oregon, he swore to himself he’d never go back. But when his NFL career goes up in smoke, that’s exactly what he finds himself doing.

Not much has changed in the ten years he’s been gone. Gossip still spreads through town like wildfire, Dropped Anchor is still the local’s favorite bar, and the woman he’s been secretly in love with most of his life still hates his guts.

Presley Fields is even more beautiful than he remembered. Her smile has the power to light up a room and that bubbly personality of hers is still as strong as ever. For everyone but Beau, anyway, and that’s the least he deserves for making her high school years a nightmare.

He isn’t the same stupid kid he was back then, and after watching her slip through his fingers too many times, the tides have finally turned in his favor. It’ll take a miracle, and every ounce of charm he has, but he’s determined to win her heart. And this time, he intends to keep it.

**Whitecap is a series of interconnected, standalone, small town romances.**

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Turn of the Tides was not what I was expecting — and wow, did I love Beau and Bubbles!

Jessica Prince did a great job of building the tension between Beau and Presley in this hate-to-love second-chance romance, and dropping little breadcrumbs about their shared history. I loved getting Beau’s backstory — all that glitters is not gold. Presley made assumptions about the popular jock, and why wouldn’t she? But I loved getting his side of the story and learning just how much Presley meant to him even when he couldn’t show it!

This book is a standalone in the Whitecap series and has that great small-town feel that I’ve come to love in Jessica Prince’s books.

Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. That’s why God created central air, after all.

Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boy–she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.

In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. Not that she’d expect a boy to understand.

Jessica has been writing since she was a little girl, but thankfully grew out of drawing her own pictures for her stories before ever publishing her first book. Because an artist she is not.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Surprised & Sacked by Gina Azzi

SURPRISED AND SACKED

Gina Azzi

Release Date: February 5

Knoxville Coyotes rookie West Crawford is a celebrated, lightning-fast football god on the field. Off the field? He’s my ex-boyfriend and greatest heartache.

I didn’t think long-distance would break us when West was drafted to Tennessee, and I was called home to Paris for a family emergency. But it did.

Fast-forward six months and West is playing in the Superbowl, I’m rooting for him to win, and our worlds re-collide.

Celebrating West’s success is supposed to be a one-night, free-for-all that ends with closure. Instead, it births a new beginning. Literally.

I’m having a baby with my ex, our lives are still thousands of miles apart, and nothing has changed. I mean, except the obvious.

Between West’s flourishing career, my familial responsibilities abroad, and a positive pregnancy test that surprises us both, our relationship is bound to be sacked before it has the chance to soar.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Surprised & Sacked is the second book in the Knoxville Coyotes series, and is a second-chance, surprise pregnancy romance for West and Nova. They reconnect for one night after the Coyotes win the Super Bowl, and while it’s clear they still love one another, their lives are in different places now. But fate has other plans for them when Nova discovers she is pregnant…

I enjoyed West and Nova’s reunion. It was clear that she wanted more than just to be West’s WAG, and he went above and beyond to prove to Nova how much she meant to him. West didn’t have the best childhood, so he has some concerns about whether or not he has what it takes to be a good dad; I really enjoyed that added dimension to his character.

I had an issue with this story, however. Their breakup happened several months before the Super Bowl; they just kind of grew apart when Nova went back home to Paris to help with her family’s vineyard after her father got ill. I wish that that had been a “show” rather than a “tell” because I felt like I was missing backstory.

But overall, I enjoyed this story. It’s pretty low angst, and I read it easily on a rainy afternoon. West is one of Cohen’s teammates from book 1, so there is that connection, and although I haven’t read Gina Azzi’s rockstar series, Nova is friends with the band from those books.
