Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I was expecting this book to be a gut-wrenching, ugly cry read — and it was not. Despite what the blurb lead me to believe going in, I found F*cking Shattered to be a lighter read than I expected. There are plenty of sad moments, but like several other reviewers, I found myself laughing at the antics between River and Jovi more often than sobbing because of the situation that Jovi was in.

When Jovi’s best friend Katie suddenly dies, she sets out to complete the “bucket list” which Katie had written for her. It is more like a list of rules to learn how to loosen up and live a little. Top of the list is “kiss a stranger” — which Jovi does, at Katie’s funeral. But when she runs into the mysterious hottie more than once after that, Jovi can’t help but wonder why, and if there’s a reason for the intense connection and attraction she and River share.

The two embark on a road trip so Jovi can complete Katie’s final wish, falling in love along the way, learning about themselves and each other. But when River drops a major bombshell on her, will Jovi find it in her heart to forgive him?

These characters are very likable, and I honestly didn’t expect the story to go the way that it did. Was I absolutely shattered by this book? No. Not in the heartbroken sense. But I did like the way the story brought two broken people together and helped them heal one another.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review for Sunny Shelly Reads book blog

Trailer
Excerpt
He
practically pushes me up to the bar and onto a barstool before motioning for
the bartender.
I make myself comfortable, hanging
my purse on the hook under the bar, as he orders us a drink.
He takes the seat next to me and I
look over at him, trying to figure him out and what he wants with me.
“What are you staring at?” he asks,
seeing me out of the corner of his bright blue eyes.
“I’m trying to figure out what your
deal is.”
He turns his body to face me. “Why
do I have to have a ‘deal’?”
I shrug as the bartender places our
drinks in front of us. I pick up the glass and take a sip as he slides over
some cash. “I don’t know. We met under these really weird circumstances, and
then we had a random hook up. I never expected to see you again.”
He sets his drink down and trains
his eyes on me. “Let me ask you this, why did you kiss me yesterday?”
I turn to look at myself in the
mirror hanging behind the bar. I don’t want him to see me, see that I’m lying. “As
a thank you for the drink.” The lie leaves my lips smoothly. I almost buy it
myself.
“Bullshit. What’s the real reason?”
I turn to him suddenly with my mouth
hanging open from him calling me out. “It’s none of your business.”
He laughs. “It’s none of my business
why you felt the need to sexually assault me?” He leans back, amusement written
all over his perfectly sculpted face. His eyes shine bright, even under the dim
lights of the bar.
Now it’s my turn to laugh. “Sexual
assault? I don’t think that’s what it was.” I pick up my drink and take another
swig, enjoying the burn it brings and the numbness that accompanies it.
“Did I give you the impression that
I wanted you to kiss me?”
I squint my eyes at him. What is he
getting at? “
No.
“Then why did you do it?” His eyes
hold a gleam of wicked amusement. He likes challenging me.
I let out a deep breath. “A friend
of mine made me this summer bucket list,” I admit a little breathless.
He nods like he understands. “And
this list said ‘kiss River’?” His voice is dead serious, but the expression on
his face is nothing short of sarcastic.
“No. It said ‘kiss a stranger’,” I
say, annoyance consuming me as I push my dark hair behind my ear.
He holds his arms up at his sides. “So
why me? What made you decided that I was the stranger you should kiss?”
God he annoys me so much! “I don’t
know. You were there, the list popped into my head. I figured, why not? I had
never seen you before in my life and I figured I never would again.”
“Ahh, so you took this bucket list
challenge, but you decided to play it the safe way.”
“What do you mean the safe way?” I
want to get up and leave because he pushes these buttons inside of me that make
me want to pull my hair out. It’s like he’s a child that just lives to annoy
me. But something inside of me won’t let me walk away that easy. It’s like I’m
a glutton for punishment, and just have to see what he will say next.
He pulls his barstool a bit closer,
causing his legs to be on either side of mine. Our legs are almost touching and
it causes a tingle to take over. “Okay, this list, I’m assuming, was meant to
get you out of your element, to make you do things you’d never do, and to learn
to live with what comes out of it instead of always playing it safe, right?” His
jaw flexes as he waits for the answer.
I nod. “Yeah, I guess.”
“Well, you’re not playing right.”
A puff of air leaves me in a rush. “There
are no rules!”
He holds up his finger. “That’s
where you’re wrong. Why bother with the list if you’re not going to do it
right? You thought you could cross things off without having to deal with the
consequences. Meaning, you kissed me because you thought you wouldn’t have to
mess with the awkwardness of having to run into me.”
I bite the inside of my cheek while
I think it over. But I can’t come up with an argument because he’s right. I’m
not doing this right. I need to put myself out there and learn what it’s like
to be truly vulnerable.
I pick up my glass and finish it
off.
River, apparently happy with the
inner turmoil he’s caused in me, leans back, smiling like a Cheshire cat. I
want to reach over and smack that smug look right off his face.
After a good, long minute of
silence, I turn to him. “So what should I do then? Just go up to a random
stranger in here and kiss them?”
He looks around, surveying the small
pub. “Yeah, go kiss that one.” He nods towards the back corner.

BLURB

I’ve always been a good girl.

I work hard, I follow the rules, and I always achieve my goals.

But sometimes good girls want things that aren’t good for them.

Or someone who isn’t good for them.

Like their new boss.

And sometimes they do very bad things to get his attention.

Like sell their virginity in an auction.

Who knew he’d be so very, very mad?

Maybe this was not my best laid plan…

EXCERPT

He pulls me to my feet and he kisses me and he tastes like me and it’s dirty and shocking and sorta oddly thrilling and primal. He unsnaps my bra. The straps slip down my arms until it falls to the floor and then I’m naked. I’m naked with Rhys. This is the best day of my life. Except he’s not naked.

“You’re still dressed. Am I supposed to”—I gesture to his shirt—”am I supposed to or are you supposed to? Or do you like to keep your clothes on when you have sex?”

He laughs, his eyes dancing in amusement as he unbuttons his shirt and shrugs it off. “No, I’m not going to fuck you with my clothes on, Lydia.”

“Oh, thank goodness. I’ve really been wanting to see you naked. For a long time. Like weeks. Since the bar. The first time at the bar, not the second time. Can I take off your pants?” My fingers hover at his waistband, poised to unbutton and unzip but needing the nudge of permission.

“Please,” he says and then my fingers are in motion, unbuckling, unbuttoning, unzipping. It’s harder to do this in reverse, removing someone else’s pants instead of your own, but I manage. I’d manage even if it was a thousand-piece puzzle instead of just a zipper and a button because I want his pants off pretty badly.

When I’ve got the pants undone they drop to the floor and then the only thing separating me from sex is a pair of briefs, so I make short work of those.

He’s beautiful. Head to toe. I could spend all night looking at him, all month, forever. But I don’t have forever or even all night since Rhys is worried about his schedule so I take in as much as I can as fast as I can. Because oh, holy crap, I know what Rhys Dalton looks like naked. The smattering of hair across his chest. His toned abs and flat stomach and the trail of hair from his belly button to his cock. The birthmark on his left hip and the definition of the lines that form on his abs. I send a silent prayer to baby Jesus that I’ll get a good look at his butt before this is over because I need to know exactly what it looks like under those suit pants. Then too soon, he’s moving me onto the bed because this is it. This is the sex.

Blog Tour: Sunny Shelly Reviews On The Edge, by Dr. Rebecca Sharp

Title: On the Edge
Series: A Winter Games Novel
Author: Dr. Rebecca Sharp
Genre: NA Romance (Stand alone)
Release Date: May 1, 2018

Emmett

Do. Not. Touch.
Alice Ryder came with more warning signs than a museum exhibit.
Under twenty-one. Best friend’s baby sister. Heart-broken.
I was only supposed to keep an eye on her and keep my hands to myself.
But her sunshine sucked me in.
Why did she have to want me? Why did she have to want me to save her?
I wasn’t her savior. I wasn’t the prince in her fairytale.
I was only the asshole in shining armor.

Ally

For some, heartbreak becomes a habit.
Losing so much had taught me that it’s easier to just give up the things you care about before they are taken.
Because you can’t lose what you don’t have.
I gave up the warmth of the sun and sand hoping that the cold, snowy mountains of Colorado would be able to numb whatever feelings I had left and bury the pieces of my heart under the frost.
And then I met Emmett Jameson – the King of the Mountain and my brother’s best friend.
He was cold and controlling – treating me like the child that I wasn’t.
He was everything that promised to break what was left of me.
And I needed him for it.
My shattered heart would be safe wanting someone like him.
Then again, heartbreak was my bad habit.

3.5 Stars

On The Edge hits all the marks of a romance between a broody, surly, tortured and damaged hero who doesn’t believe he deserves to be loved, and the sweet girl who proves him wrong. In this case, it’s his best friend’s little sister who is the object of Emmett’s affection, so there is a double trope here. Ally is hiding some secrets of her own, and has major issues when it comes to feeling like she’s being left behind, so this story is full of angst as she and Emmett waffle back and forth. Man, I just wanted to smack some sense into the guy for being such a “Snowmasshole”!!

The core of the story was great, but I felt like the storytelling itself was a bit clunky. The transitions between past and present weren’t very smooth, and there are a lot of references to events in the other book of this series that were kind of toss-always when I felt like I needed more explained. Especially since the stories seem to be happening concurrently. So for that, I didn’t feel that On The Edge was a true standalone.

But if you are looking for an angst-filled romance with a couple who are constantly riding the edge of being something more, something greater, then this story is a perfect read for you!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review for Sunny Shelly Reads book blog.

He’s the best quarterback in the AFL. She’s a young woman desperately in need of a fresh start. Neither expects to fall for the other. Will he finally put love ahead of his career? More importantly, can she trust him with secrets so deep her very life depends on them?

About Tess

Like most of her characters, Tess Thompson hails from a small town and will always feel like a small town girl, despite the fact she’s lived in Seattle for over twenty-five years. She loves music and dancing, books and bubble baths, cooking and wine, movies and snuggling. She cries at sappy commercials and thinks kissing in the rain should be done whenever possible. Although she tries to act like a lady, there may or may not have been a few times in the last several years when she’s gotten slightly carried away watching the Seattle Seahawks play, but that could also just be a nasty rumor.

She currently lives in a suburb of Seattle, Washington with her brand new husband, the hero of her own love story, and their Brady Bunch clan of two sons, two daughters and five cats, all of whom keep her too busy, often confused, but always amazed. Yes, that’s four kids and five cats. Pray for her.

Author Bio
A lifetime
of experiences fill the pages of my stories. An elementary teacher and single
parent for twenty years, I supplemented income with sidelines like
special-occasion garment designer and creator, cake decorator, interior
designer, bank teller, computer consultant, admin clerk at a nuclear power
plant construction site. Everything is grist for my writing mill.
This
girly-girl prefers pearls, Guerlain’s L’Instant Parfum, peonies, and the color
pink.
What ties
it all together? What has been a universal constant through it all?
Romance.
And so
that’s what I write. Romances that are occasionally sweet, ofttimes steamy, a
few times off-the-charts explicit. I write romantic stories short enough to fit
in an anthology, stories a little longer to entertain during a trip to the
beach, or stories long enough to explore and get lost in for days. Some will
make you laugh out loud, and some will run the gamut of emotion. If you want to
smolder with desire, that story is here, too.
In other
words, if you’re in the mood to read something romantic, you’ve found the right
place.
After all,
kisses are only a dream away…

We are celebrating the release of HIS ROYAL
HOTNESS by Virna DePaul!

HRH.jpg
Title:His Royal Hotness
Age Group: Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Book Description:

He’s bound by duty. She’s a free spirit. They could never work, unless…

Molly believes in exploring wherever life takes her, even if that means parts of a
royal palace in Scotland that are closed to the public. And if she’s mistaken for a
world famous painter and given a private audience with the deliciously sexy Duke of
Roxburghe, then why not pretend to be somebody else, at least for a while?

Callum doesn’t have time for fun and games—not when he’s got a country to run
and a legacy to uphold. But when a free-spirited American works her way past the
palace guards, she somehow manages to break down the walls around his heart too.
If only he could make her understand that despite their mutual attraction, his
feelings for her are simply too intense, too passionate, too dirty, to reconcile with his
duty-filled life.

Will Callum learn that the needs of his heart are just as important as the needs of his
country? And will Molly trust that Callum is the man who’ll love her for a lifetime
and beyond? Find out in this regal romp filled with mistaken identities, forbidden
loves, and exciting twists that don’t stop coming.

HRH-Teaser4.jpg

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

His Royal Hotness is a low-angst opposites attract story, and overall enjoyable read. Free-spirit American Molly is in the wrong place at the wrong time in a Scottish castle, and a case of mistaken identity puts her right in the path of Callum, who is a very reluctant duke.

HRH-Teaser1.jpg

Callum doesn’t exactly want, and wasn’t meant to have, the dukedom. But his intense loyalty to his family and country has him stepping up to do what’s expected of him. But falling for the spitfire New Yorker is certainly NOT expected of a royal. But there is an intense attraction between the two from the start, and Molly and Callum really bring out the best in one another as their friendship and romance grows.

Overall, a hot, sexy read. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review for Sunny Shelly Reads book blog.

Exclusive Excerpt:

The first thing I noticed were his eyes. Bottle green with the tiniest flecks of copper scattered throughout, and when the light hit them just right, those flecks sparkled in the most intriguing way. His shaggy caramel-blond hair stuck up in all directions, as if he’d been running his fingers through it all day, and the longer I stared, the more I found myself wanting to do the same thing. Tattoos circled both of his wrists, and his ears were pierced and adorned in black onyx. He had a smile that could simultaneously melt your heart and panties. Everything about him screamed male model, and if he wasn’t, then he sure as hell should be. He was that gorgeous. The bar was packed, and he was seated close. So close his muscular thigh pressed tightly against mine, making it impossible to ignore his presence. Not that I wanted to or anything.

By the time I finished examining him, I looked up and found his pouty lips were puckered as if he was deep in thought. Either that or he was thinking about kissing me. Yeah, I knew we hadn’t been formally introduced, but I’d definitely consider kissing those lips. His gaze was intense, and it roamed my entire body, slowly, as if he were cataloging every detail for later when he was alone and naked in the shower. The thought of him naked, alone or otherwise, excited me.

“No one special.” I fidgeted in my seat. “Old boyfriend.”

“If you ask me, he’s a dumbass for letting you get away. You’re much prettier than candy.”

Another blush heated my cheeks as I shook my head and responded, if only to keep him talking, “Ahh, but you haven’t seen this particular piece of candy.”

“Don’t need to. He gave you up. In my book, that’s reason enough to achieve asshole status.” He winked and tipped his glass to mine. “But, thanks to his assholery, you’re here with me. So… to assholes.”

Okay. He was definitely flirting.

Sunny Shelly Reviews Sidecar Crush by Claire Kingsley

Sidecar Crush (Bootleg Springs #2) by Claire Kingsley, with Lucy Score, is now live!

“I tried to think of something—anything—to calm my raging hard-on. One wrong move and Leah Mae would rub up against it and that was liable to kill me dead on the spot.”

Model turned disgraced reality TV starlet, Leah Mae Larkin, crash lands in her hometown of Bootleg Springs to lay low while a scandal threatens her career. She can’t shake the feeling that her agent—and supposed fiancé—manipulated her into the role of made-for-TV homewrecker. Connecting with her roots is just what she needs, and Bootleg Springs is home to her father, moonshine, and her childhood best friend, Jameson Bodine.

Only there’s nothing childlike about Jameson—a man who turns scrap metal into art and isn’t afraid to throw down on a rowdy Friday night with his brothers and hellcat sister. He might not say much, but still waters run deep. Seeing the ring on his crush’s finger? He doesn’t like it, but he can’t wish it away. No more than he can wish away the trouble his family is in, with evidence pointing to his late father in the cold case disappearance of Callie Kendall.

Jameson and Leah Mae are just two friends reliving their summers together, blowing off steam, and having fun for the first time in a long time. But Leah Mae is realizing what’s really important in her life, and it isn’t what she thought.

And sometimes steam turns into sparks—hot as molten steel—and friends aren’t just friends.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I am loving this series from CK and LS! Sidecar Crush is book #2 in the Bootleg Springs series — and it is a standalone, but there is an on-going mystery that carries over from book to book. And the Bodine family are so dang awesome, you’ll want to read all of their stories anyway!

Leah Mae and Jameson were best friends once upon a time, spending lazy summer days together before a tragedy hit Bootleg Springs, and her mother never allowed her to go back for summertime visits with her dad. After that, Leah became a popular model, but she’s always remained Jameson’s friend, the one he wished he’d taken a chance on. The two reconnect when a scandal has Leah Mae laying low in her hometown, and she and Jameson rekindle their friendship right where it left off all those years ago. And then some.

Jameson is such a sensitive soul; I think he may be my favorite of all the Bodine brothers! He is the quintessential Southern gentleman! And that first kiss with Leah Mae is movie-worthy! I think my knees went weak! I love the way these two interact with one another; they know so much about each other as friends, so it is interesting to see them move to a romantic relationship. Especially when Leah Mae’s Hollywood life causes some friction between them. But neither one of them is too proud to admit they were wrong, and their reunion leads to one of the sweetest endings I’ve ever read.

I love the way the Bodine clan interact with one another. I want to move to Bootleg Springs and live with them! I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review for Sunny Shelly Reads book blog.
