Sunny Shelly’s Review: Forty Candles, by AM Willard

Release Date: October 3, 2018

Cover Design: Annelle Willard

Synopsis

I’ve always done what was expected of me. I married the man that my family thought I was supposed to. I turned a blind eye when his after work activities weren’t really for work. What I couldn’t look past anymore was how lonely I’d become.

All it took was one night to change my life.

I filed for a separation.
I moved my teenage daughter and me in with my parents.
Did I mention that my room should be placed in an 80’s museum? Yes, it’s not changed in decades.

Then my life changed again right before my 40th birthday.

Just when I thought things were going to get back to normal, in walks Lenny Ward. He’s the man your parents warn you about. You know the type… A body like a God, smart, oh and the sex… It’s like a 10.0 earthquake off the charts type of connection.
Even though we have chemistry, I have to protect not only my heart but my daughters.

Goodreads

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

The last book written by AM Willard before her untimely passing, Forty Candles is a delightful romance between single mom Jules and one of her clients, Lenny.

In the midst of a messy divorce, Jules is reluctant to act on her attraction to Lenny. I love that there is a distant childhood connection between Jules and Lenny; that definitely added to the relationship they both have with Jules’ ex-husband. As much as she pushes Lenny away, he refuses to give up because for the first time since his ex-fiancee, he has found a woman worth fighting for. The relationship he builds with her teenage daughter, Sophia, is a big part of their story as well. It’s not something that was alluded to; the reader gets to see them build their own connection.

It’s a long and twisted journey for both of these characters, but their broken pasts is what brings them to a solid future together! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

New Release: Blessed Betrayal, by Livia Grant

She wanted happily ever after.
He thought he had it.

Underneath the perfect exterior of Calista Bennett’s marriage lay an ugly truth that threatens to drown her when she is betrayed.

Across town, Nickolas Mikos isn’t doing much better after his life is plunged into his new reality by his wife’s lies.

Life can change in the blink of an eye. Can Cali and Nick comfort each other’s raw pain enough to allow for a second chance at happiness, or will their fears and anger prevent them from uncovering the blessing in the betrayal?

The sound of a bell ringing, followed by a pounding jarred Cali awake. The dark bedroom was quiet. Her husband’s half of the bed was still empty. What had she been dreaming about that had woken her so abruptly?
She looked at the alarm clock on the bed stand. It read 4:04 a.m. She took a few calming breaths to settle her nerves. She was just lying down to try to get back to sleep when the doorbell rang.
Panic invaded. They lived in a safe neighborhood, but did someone know she was home alone tonight? Who could be at the door at this hour?
She knew Kevin had a handgun somewhere in the house, but she’d never learned how to use it. She jumped up and ran to the window facing the front of the house, pulling the gauze drape aside enough to peek out.
Panic turned to dread as she saw a police car in the driveway. Her mind raced to think of possible reasons for a visit by the police at this hour. Each scenario seemed worse than the one before. She rushed to her closet to grab her terrycloth robe before she jogged to the stairs, turning on the lights to the entryway to alert the police she was awake. The in-progress knocking stopped immediately.
Cali looked out the peephole. Standing on her porch were two uniformed police officers. They looked official, but she was still afraid. She wished Kevin were home with her to handle this.
She didn’t want to open the door. “Hello, officers. It’s late. What’s the problem?”
She watched through the viewer as the taller of the two responded to her question. “We’re sorry to disturb you at this hour ma’am, but there’s been an accident. We’d like to come in to discuss it with you.”
An accident. Her first thought went to her father. She hadn’t talked to him in months. “An accident? Was it my father?”
“Honestly, ma’am, we’re not sure. If you’d open the door, we have a few questions for you. Perhaps you could help us sort things out.”
Cali took a deep breath and unlocked the front door. A blanket of dread surrounded her as she let the two officers into the foyer. The shorter, stockier man reached out his hand with a business card.
“I’m Officer Jackson, and this is my partner, Officer Stanton. If you don’t mind me asking, who might you be?”
The question was unexpected. They were standing in her foyer. Surely, they knew who she was. “I’m Calista Bennett.”
She didn’t miss the quick glance between the men before Officer Jackson spoke.
“And who is Kevin Bennett to you, ma’am?”
“Is Kevin in some type of trouble officer?”
“Just answer the question if you would, ma’am.”
Cali’s voice quavered in her reply. “Kevin’s my husband, but he’s out of town on business this week. He’ll be back tomorrow afternoon if you need to speak with him. What is this about again?”
It was Officer Stanton who spoke, “Perhaps we could sit down before we answer your questions.”
Panic had her heart pounding in her ears. “I don’t want to sit down. I just want to know why you’re here.”
Officer Stanton’s eyes filled with pity before he spoke.
“I’m sorry to tell you this, Mrs. Bennett, but we believe your husband was in an accident a few hours ago.” He stopped long enough to take a small notebook out of the front pocket of his bulletproof vest. Flipping the pages, he finally continued, “Does your husband own a silver 2016 Audi R8?”
Her answer was a whispered, “Yes. It was a graduation gift from his parents when he passed the bar.” The truth was sinking in. Kevin had been in an accident. “Let me go change my clothes. What hospital did they take him to?” Only then did Cali realize he hadn’t even shared what city he was in. “He’s on a business trip. Where do I need to go to see him?”
The officers hesitated. “I’m sorry to inform you that your husband died from his injuries.”
Cali would have collapsed to the floor if Officer Stanton hadn’t caught her. He let her lean on him heavily as he steered her to the nearby living room. They sat on the closest love seat, and he wrapped his arm around her as unconscious tears overflowed down her cheeks. Her mind reeled. There had to be a mistake.

Excerpt
I’m sorry, Cali. I know it isn’t what you wanted to hear,
but the test was negative.”
Her hopeful apprehension morphed to dread. “Are you sure?
Should we do another?”
Dr. Galloway smiled indulgently. “That won’t be necessary.
The tests are very reliable. I’m sure you took one at home as well, didn’t
you?”
“Yes.” Her dejected reply was barely a whisper.
“Then you already know taking it again would just be a
waste.” The OBGYN doctor wheeled his rolling stool closer to the exam table to
pat Cali’s knee in a fatherly way. “I know you and your husband are anxious to
get your family started, but you’re only twenty-four. You have plenty of time.
We have a lot of options we haven’t tried yet.”
Cali struggled to hold back her tears. How could she tell
her kind doctor how important it was for her to get pregnant?
“I think it’s time for us to do testing on your husband.
Since we haven’t found any smoking gun on your side of the equation, it’s time
to take a look at Mr. Bennett’s sperm count and mobility. That will help me
decide our next steps.”
“I don’t know about that, Dr. Galloway. Kevin is so busy
with his job. He joined his father’s law firm last year and is working crazy
hours. I doubt he can come in for an appointment.” Cali didn’t know how to tell
the good doctor her husband had made it very clear giving him an heir was her
responsibility, and the only help he planned contributing to the process was a ‘daily
hard fuck.’
The array of bruises scattered across her body were proof
he was living up to his hard promise.
Calista trembled as she realized her temporary veil of
protection had fallen with the negative test result. Kevin was gentler with her
during the weeks of the month she might be in the process of forming a fragile
new life. For the last year, each month the results were negative, he not only
deemed it his responsibility to punish her for failing him yet again, but he
then proceeded to make up for lost time. The next two weeks of her life were
going to be hell.
No. She couldn’t tell the kind doctor that.
“What would he have to do?”
“Us men have it pretty easy, to be honest,” the doctor
grinned wolfishly. “You poor women get poked and prodded with all kinds of
needles and drugs. Your husband just needs to come in and give us a deposit of
his sperm. He’ll have a private room and will be able to bring along reading or
viewing material he might need to help. All in all, the men have it pretty good
in this deal.”
How right he was. “Okay, I’ll talk to him about it.”
“Sounds good. Keep your chin up. We’ve done a lot of tests,
and I see no reason why you can’t get pregnant. It’s gonna happen when the time
is right and not a minute before.”
“Thanks again, doctor.” She forced a smile to hide her
growing sense of dread. “I’ll see you next time.”
As Calista redressed, she said a small prayer that Kevin
would be in a good mood when he got home today. He’d been out of town on
business the last two days. Since passing the bar exam, he’d been working
eighty hours a week or more, and in truth, he was gone so much, it made her
life less stressful most of the time. Unfortunately, he still checked in at
home often enough to dump his dirty laundry and contribute his duty to operation
give me an heir.
Sitting at a stop light on the drive home, Cali once again
questioned why she stayed with her husband. He’d changed so much since they got
married almost two years before. He had always been dominant… demanding. The
problem was he’d begun to take the definition of dominant to a whole new level.
Cali used to think of herself as a submissive. Lately, she felt more like a
well-worn doormat.

Title: GOING DOWN ON ONE KNEE

Author: Christina Hovland

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Day: Oct 15th

About Going Down On One Knee:

“An utterly charming opposites-attract-story. Hovland perfectly balances simmering sexual tension with a surprising amount of emotion, and the stomach-flip-causing ending is the perfect example of why I read and love romance.” – New York Times Bestselling Author, Lauren Layne

Number-crunching Velma Johnson’s perfectly planned life is right on course.

That’s a lie. Sure, she’s got the lucrative job. She’s got the posh apartment. But her sister nabbed Velma’s Mr. Right. There has to be a man out there for Velma. Hopefully, one who’s hunky, wears pressed suits, and has a diversified financial portfolio. He’ll be exactly like, well… her sister’s new fiancé.

Badass biker Brek Montgomery blazes a trail across the country, managing Dimefront, one of the biggest rock bands of his generation. With the band on hiatus, Brek rolls into Denver to pay a quick visit to his family and friends. But when Brek’s sister suddenly gets put on bed rest, she convinces Brek to take over her wedding planning business for the duration of her pregnancy.

Staying in Denver and dealing with bridezillas was not what Brek had in mind when he passed through town, but there is one particular maid-of-honor who might make his stay worthwhile.

Velma finds herself strangely attracted to the man planning her sister’s wedding.

Problem is, he ticks none of the boxes on her well-crafted list. Brek is rough around the edges, he cusses, and doesn’t even have a 401(k). But trying something crazy might get her out of the rut of her dating life–so long as she lays down boundaries up front and sticks to her plan…

Exclusive Excerpt:

Three words. Three. Little. Words. Nothing important.

Okay, so the three words were important. Massive, really.

“Congratulations, you two,” Velma Johnson rehearsed aloud to the vase of a dozen yellow roses gripped in her arms. With a reaffirming gulp of Denver’s crisp spring air, she hustled through the open-air parking garage to the security door of her apartment building.

Her sister, Claire, had big news. To be exact, Claire and her boyfriend, Dean, had big news. Velma had a feeling she knew exactly what their news would be—they were moving in together. The next step in their relationship. Tension in Velma’s neck strung tight at the thought.

A successful career and a posh apartment she could eventually rent out as an investment were steps one and two of Velma’s elaborate five-year plan. She had ticked both those boxes. Dean, three kids, and moving to a two-story house just outside of Denver had been steps three through seven.

Not anymore. Now, her sister was moving in with the man Velma had crushed on for years. The one Velma measured all others against. The one she sang Prince and Madonna songs with at the office.

Yes, they were moving in together. That’s why Claire had called yesterday and asked to take her to dinner. Velma had insisted they meet at her place instead. Her invitation had nothing to do with the fact she liked having Dean visit her apartment—even if he was with her sister. She’d offered because it made sense they’d want a private location for their big reveal. And when the announcement came that they’d be embracing that next relationship milestone…well, being on her home turf sounded pretty darn appealing.

Just as she reached the security door, the sound of a motorcycle that clearly had no muffler cut through her thoughts. She turned. The bike pulled up next to her car—into the parking spot meant for her guests. A super-muscled, badass-mother-trucker of a biker swung his leg over the side of the motorcycle and stood.

Her heart stopped with a thunk.

Vin-Diesel-biker-dude pulled off his helmet and—sweet mother of Mary, had the temperature jumped by ten degrees? She got the picture: he rode a motorcycle, hit the gym twice a day. The type she avoided because she did not do badass. She preferred the suspenders-and-slacks kind of man. Except, at that moment, she debated how important that preference really was to her.

Focus, Velma. Head held high, she approached him. “Excuse me? Sir? You can’t park there.”

He frowned at the number marking the spot.

Normally she wouldn’t mind sharing the space, but with Claire, Dean, and his friend Brek coming to dinner, she needed both of her parking spaces.

This man was obviously not Dean’s friend. Dean’s friends were all buttoned-up, suit-wearing, Wednesday-afternoon golfers. She was nearly certain.

The black leather jacket and jeans ripped at this guy’s knees looked horribly out of place next to her Prius. His longish, rock-’n’-roll blond hair was nicer than hers (although his could use a trim). She didn’t even mind the dragon tattoo creeping around the side of his neck or the layer of mud coating his motorcycle boots. Everything about the man screamed masculine.

Velma shifted the heavy vase in her grip. Fudge. Which of her neighbors was letting their guests use her spot this time?

“No, see, that’s the spot for my apartment.” Oh, how she wanted to rub at the headache pulsing at her forehead. She didn’t have time for this. Not today. “I’m sorry, it’s just that my sister and her boyfriend and his friend are coming for dinner because my sister has big news. And while I have no idea what that news is, it’s important to her. So that makes it important to me. Which is why I put on a pork roast, bought roses, and got out my crystal wine goblets. That’s what you do when your sister has big news, you know? Never mind she’s practically living my five-year plan without even trying, and I’m over here without even a boyfriend. That was not part of my plan. At this point, I should be at least six months into dating my future husband.”

Oh God. She was rambling. And he was staring at her with a half grin that made her skin flush. Seriously, the way the man smiled should be outlawed.

She ducked her head. “Anyway, I have company coming and I kind of need my spot.”

“Five-year plan?” he asked. As though that was the important part of what she’d just spit out.

This is how one makes an absolute idiot of oneself. “You know what? It’s fine. You can stay right there. Don’t worry about it.” She shifted the flowers again and turned on her heel.

See? People said she was inflexible, but here she was, absolutely rolling with it. She smiled at her flexibility.

“One sec,” Motorcycle Dude called. “This is the number they gave me.”

She paused midstride and turned around.

He ticked his head to the side. “Velvet?”

Oh dear. She could easily be swayed by the gravelly way he said her name. Well, the nickname her family called her—despite her repeated cease-and-desist requests.

“Um, yes?” She gripped the glass vase harder with her clammy hands.

“Brek.” He looked at her like she should know him and pointed to his chest. “Dean’s friend.”

Velma stared.

Oh.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Faux Pas, by Natasha Madison

Meghan
Five days in Paris sounded like a great idea for three friends. Especially when amazing wine was in play.

It didn’t matter that our rented “apartment” only had one bed, and barely enough space to breathe, we were in Paris and our motto was c’est la vie.

Nothing would faze us, not even the rude waiter at the first restaurant we went to, or the insanely hot manger who was insulted when a bottle of wine was returned.

Nothing could bring me down or knock me off my path to the best vacation of my life.

Alex

I had six days in Paris and then I’d go back to my wine vineyard. It was smooth sailing, until three “americans” came into the restaurant and returned my newest full bodied, savory creation.

I ignored her until she stormed out of the restaurant looking for a taxi at one in the morning. I couldn’t leave her wandering around the streets of Paris, could I?

I’d give her a ride, make sure she was safe, and my duty would be done. Except, was it?

Something about her pulled me.

This could be a vacation fling. After all, there is no real reason for her to know my interesting secret.

I’m France’s most eligible bachelor.

This faux pair is almost a faux pas…

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

A trip to Paris turns into the trip of a lifetime for American Meghan. When she sends back a bottle of wine in an upscale restaurant, she meets Alex, one of Europe’s most eligible bachelors.

The banter between the characters was excellent, and the vacation fling set-up was highly entertaining and a real escape. Alex is hiding something pretty big from Meghan, and he figures that she’ll never find out if they only share a week-long fling. But the best-laid plans often go awry, and when what happens in Paris doesn’t stay in Paris, will Alex’s faux pas be a dealbreaker?

Cute, sexy story with great characters! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

EXCERPT

He makes his way through the tables, straight to ours. “quel est le problème?” What is the problem, his voice comes out gruff, the smell of his musk hitting my nose.

“Le vin n’est pas bon,” The wine isn’t good, I start saying, and I look at his eyes that look almost black. I’m not sure if it’s his natural color, or if the restaurant is dimmer now than before, or maybe it’s just his form blocking the lights. “il a un goût de vinaigre.” It tastes like vinegar, and I’m not sure it was the right thing to say or not. He stares at me, not saying a word. “Taste it.” I give up on my French and switch to English. “You’ll see.”

I’m waiting for him to say something back, but he doesn’t. Instead, he turns around and walks away from the table, going into the back. “What the fuck just happened?” Diana says in a whisper. We all turn to see where he went, checking to see if he is going to storm back in.

“She insulted his wine,” Kate says, leaning in and speaking softly.

I throw my hands in the air. “It was shit,” I say louder than I wanted to. “You guys said it yourself.” Looking around, I see that a couple of the tables are looking at us, but the majority of the tables are deep in their own conversations and not paying attention.

We don’t say anything else when we see the waiter come back with a new bottle in one hand and a new wine glass in the other. He uncorks the wine, then pours a touch in and waits for me to taste it. I don’t say anything to him; I just nod my head, and he puts the bottle in the middle of the table. “I guess I will pour the wine,” Kate says, picking up the bottle and pouring it in everyone’s glass. I pick up the glass of wine and bring it to my lips. The cold glass is resting on my lips when I feel someone staring at me. I look down and take a sip, then look around, and I guess it’s just me because no one is looking in my direction.

By the time we finish dinner, we’ve drunk two more bottles. and everyone is laughing and having a great time. The food was amazing. “We need a taxi,” I say. Getting up, I grab my jacket, shrugging it on.

“I think we can walk to the corner that way,” Diana says, pointing at the sky, “and flag one down.”

“If we go that way,” Kate says, pointing at the sky, “we need to call NASA.” We all laugh out loud while the waiter comes to take the bill from us.

“Merci.” We smile at him as he walks away, still not saying a word.

“Yes, thank you for my glass of ice cubes that you only brought me one of even though I asked for seven,” Kate says, laughing while trying to whisper. “And thank you for pouring our wine.”

“Okay, let’s go,” I say, walking to the front door.

“I’m going to ask him for a taxi,” Kate says, going to the waiter who stands at the hostess counter and asking him for a cab.

I watch from the front door as Diana stands behind her while I look in my bag and pull out my lip gloss.

“Pardon.” I hear Kate say loudly, and I look up.

“Vous pensez qu’après tout ce que vous avez fait ce soir vous méritez que je vous appelle un taxi ?” I stand here with my mouth open in shock when he answered her. Do you think after everything you did to me tonight that you deserve that I call you a taxi?

Kate starts. “What did I do? Expect you to do your job?” she says, and Diana grabs her arm, pulling her to the front door.

“Did he just say …?” I ask her when we are standing outside in front of the restaurant, the wind blowing my hair in front of my face. I turn my head, making it fly back the other way.

“So it’s safe to say,” Diana starts with a laugh, “we aren’t coming back to this restaurant.”

“Take a picture of it, and tomorrow we can go on Yelp and leave a bad review,” Kate says, grabbing her phone from her pocket.

“Let’s just go,” I say, and the three of us look around at the desolate street.

“What time is it?” I ask and take out my phone. “Shit, it’s one a.m.”

“Yeah,” Diana says. We look right down the dark street and see some traffic coming from up ahead. “We should walk to that street and flag down a taxi.”

We all nod and start walking with Kate in the middle. “He was such an ass,” Kate says, “and the boss or manager was an even bigger ass.”
“Seriously,” I say, turning to them. “It’s like it was my fault his wine was shit,” I say, and then we all stop when a white four-door Audi stops next to us, surprising us.

“Get in.” The voice sounds familiar, but the street is so dark it doesn’t help. I lean in a bit to see his face, and I’m shocked when I see it’s the manager from the restaurant.

When her nose isn’t buried in a book, or her fingers flying across a keyboard writing, she’s in the kitchen creating gourmet meals. You can find her, in four inch heels no less, in the car chauffeuring kids, or possibly with her husband scheduling his business trips. It’s a good thing her characters do what she says, because even her Labrador doesn’t listen to her…

Ah! So much I want to say about this book! I fell in love with these characters and the circumstances that brings them together. I can’t wait for the second part of this duet to see how the story continues!

Maggie and Will are complete opposites, but somehow fit together perfectly! But will these two tortured souls give into their demons, or fight them together and come out stronger on the other side?

Excerpt

“I don’t like feeling like this,” Will said.
I sucked a breath through my teeth. “Feeling like what?”
“Like this.” He took a step toward me, and I fought
not to step backward. Will had a quiet authority about him, and in the shadows
of the moon, his shoulders seemed to broaden, his legs seemed to lengthen. He
seemed larger than life.
When he had me backed up against the porch railing, he
raised a hand, floating his fingers around my jaw, over my cheeks, but never
actually touching me. I arched toward his hand. I couldn’t help it. But he
hovered, never making contact.
“You make me feel…” Will started. “Out of control.”
I couldn’t move. “Oh?”
“Like I actually have to care about what someone else
thinks. Like I’m not alone anymore.” He paused. His eyes opened wide, following
the path of his fingers as they took hold of a strand of hair in my ponytail
and twirled. “And for the first time in a very long time, I feel like I don’t
want to be.”
He tugged lightly on the strand, and I felt the slight pinch
like an arrow through my body, shooting down my arms and legs, and coming to
throb in that place no man had been for so, so long. I bit my lip. Will’s eyes
dilated.
“Tell the truth, Lil. What do you want?”
You. The word echoed distantly, like a bell tolling
from miles away. I didn’t understand it. I was broken. A mess. What should I
want with this man? We had a connection, sure, but overall, he was nothing but
trouble. He was grouchy. A loner. Clearly had serious social and emotional
control issues.
And yet. There was no denying that something was here. Since
we met, it certainly felt at times as if the universe itself was tilting on its
axis, trying to knock me into him. Breakdown after breakdown. Meeting after
meeting. And now…
I tipped my chin up so I could look directly at him, drawn
like one of the moths circling the porch light. Winging through the dark, ready
to dive into his golden inferno.
“I don’t want Lucas,” I said quietly, drifting my gaze up
and down his naked torso. A sheen of sweat glimmered in the moonlight, which
also made the shadows of his muscles—the square pectorals, the solid rack of
abs, the lickable V that dipped beneath his shorts—that much more
evident.
Will followed my gaze, and his hand dropped. He stepped
between my legs, and his unique scents engulfed me. Working all afternoon only
made them that much stronger—the scent of pine trees, lake water, and man swallowed
me with a heady rush that made me shake slightly. And it was then, only then, that
he finally touched me. My waist was encircled by his wide palms, so broad that
his fingers nearly touched on either side. It was relatively innocent, but the
intent was clear. Just like last night, he held me still; I couldn’t move
unless he wanted me to. For that moment, I was his.
When I looked back up, his eyes were fixed on my lips.
Unconsciously, I licked the lower one. His pupils dilated even more.
“Lil,” he whispered as he leaned a little closer.
“What are you waiting for?” I murmured. Now I was the one
staring at his mouth—so soft and full under his newly trimmed beard.
I panted. Will swore.
“Fuck it,” he growled. “I don’t fucking know.”
Sometimes you don’t know you wanted something until you have
it. Sometimes you don’t know you need something until it’s there.
His mouth found mine in a fury, one that surprised me for
about a half second before. The hands at my waist gripped so tightly, I almost
couldn’t breathe, and I felt like I was strangled—not for lack of oxygen, but
for lack of him. Will’s lips made me feel like I was breathing for the
first time; like I’d been under water my entire life, and he was the air I’d
never known I needed.

Author Bio
Nicole French is an East Coast/West Coast hybrid creature,
Springsteen fanatic, hopeless romantic, and total bookworm. When not writing
fiction or teaching writing classes, she is hanging out with her family,
playing soccer with the rest of the thirty-plus crowd in Seattle, or going on
dates with her husband. In her spare time, she likes to go running with her
dog, Greta, or practice the piano, but never seems to do either one of these
things as much as she should.
