Sunny Shelly’s Review: Biggest Player by Sara Ney

Bestselling author Sara Ney scores with a fiery romance about online dating, where a single mom and a football pro ignite sparks when they swipe right—even though they know it’s all wrong.

Margot’s a busy single mom juggling teaching, parenting, and trying not to die alone. Dating apps? Total nightmare. But desperate times call for desperate swipes, even if they make her break out in stress hives. When she matches with a guy who looks too good to be true, she’s convinced he’s a walking red flag—or worse—a catfish.

Dex is hot, and he knows it. A quarterback with a killer smile and looks to spare, he’s a good guy looking for a long-term relationship. He wants what his friends have: someone to come home to…and if they’re naked when he gets there, even better. When he logs on for a casual scroll, he’s not expecting to meet her. One swipe, and suddenly he’s hooked.

Margot’s convinced he’s a catfish. Dex has zero dad bod and no dad energy. But their sizzling back-and-forth leaves them both thinking “what if.” After a surprise run-in leads to a mind-blowing (and soggy AF) kiss, their opposites-attract energy skyrockets. Can they find a way to make it last?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Throw together a single mom teacher, a pro football player, and a dating app where the heroine is sure she’s being catfished, and you have Biggest Player, Sara Ney’s newest romcom.

Margo and Dex’s story was so lighthearted and fun. The banter between the two characters is hilarous, the how they meet and begin dating is escapism at its finest. And Margo’s daughter, Wyatt, steals every scene that she is in!

I loved that when they first started chatting online, Margo thought he was posing as a pro football player. Their first in-person meeting was hysterical (much thanks to Wyatt!), and even though they got off on the wrong foot, they agreed to be friends. Dex never imagined himself dating someone with kids, and as a single mom, Margot is not interested in casual hookups. Their first “hangout” leaves them both soaking wet…. literally, due to busted pipes.

Dex is so charming — even though he decides to use Margo to up his reputation points. He does a decent job of groveling to win her back, and I enjoyed seeing how these two navigated their friends-to-lovers status.

Biggest Player is the second book in the Not Yours series, but it reads as a complete standalone. He’s Landon/Andy’s best friend from Not Your Biggest Fan, and there is a lot of character growth from Dex between the goofy no-cares-in-the-world guy we met in that book to how devoted he is to Margot and Wyatt by the end of Biggest Player. Also, Margo and Dex meet through Harlow’s Kissmet app, and she and Andy make sweet cameos.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Chasing The Sun by Lena Hendrix

🌻 Chasing The Sun by Lena Hendrix is NOW AVAILABLE 🌻

What to expect:

🌻 Single dad

🌻 Rivals to lovers

🌻 Forced proximity

🌻Grumpy/sunshine

🌻Quirky small town

He wants me to stay out of his way. I want to get under his skin.

One look at single dad Callum Blackwood, and I know I messed up. I never meant to save a farm––or steal it from under the grumpy innkeeper who had already claimed it as his future. Now I’m the woman who swooped in on a whim and left him seething in the process.

Trouble is, I have no idea what I’m doing. Every smirk, every biting comment is a reminder that he’s waiting for me to fail. But I don’t back down from a fight—even when the fight comes with a jawline that should be illegal and a scowl that sets my pulse racing.

Tempers flare, but when the lines between rivals and lovers begin to blur, I start to see him in a different light. The longer we go toe-to-toe, the more I understand the man behind the scowl. The one who loves his kid fiercely, who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, who looks at me like I’m the reason the sun rises.

Cal’s wrong if he thinks I’ll give up on this farm. He’s even more wrong if he thinks I’ll give up on him.

But holding a man like him is like chasing the sun––brilliant, blinding, and bound to set your entire life on fire.

Buckle up for Star Harbor! Lena Hendrix kicks off her next series with a delicious grumpy/sumshine, single dad, brother’s friend, rivals romance set in a charming small town with a ghost story lore!

I adored Callum and Elodie. He is the quintessential broody, single dad, tatted and scarred (literally and figuratively). He runs a successful B&B, but is in over his head when it comes to raising his teenage son, Levi. His plans to purchase the farm next to his inn’s property goes out the window when Ellie moves back to town (after a bad breakup and losing her job) and decides to help the old man who owns the farm revive the land and make it a destination for Star Harbor tourists. Needless to say, Ellie and Cal get off on the wrong foot — and the snarky banter and sizzling chemistry that followed had me hooked.

These two characters were perfect together! And I also loved how Ellie connected with Levi.

LH always puts a through-line that carries from book to book in her series. I was very intrigued by the legend of the lady who haunts Star Harbor, and the mystery that will continue throughout the rest of this series. I am really looking forward to the rest of this series!

Well done! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I knew this book was going to be a tearjerker, based on past Tillie Cole books I’d read. But I was so not prepared for the magnitude of this book. Heartwrenching doesn’t even begin to cover it. June and Jesse were full of so much promise and hope, despite the tragic circumstances surrounding their meeting. From start to finish, their story was epic.

June is a quiet bookworm who dreams of becoming a novelist. Jesse is a high school football star, with dreams (and a very possible potential) of playing in the NFL. On paper, they are complete opposites, and in the halls of a normal high school, they probably would never have clicked the way they did at Harmony Ranch, where they are both in a clinical trial because they are dying of leukemia. Despite their dire situation, Jesse and June — and two other teens in the group, Emma and Chris — became a quartet who got each other through a horrible shared experience. I loved the lighter moments between the Chemo Club, where they acted like normal teenagers. Because their shared experience was anything but normal for teens.

As they are going through the trial, June begins to write the romance novel she’s always dreamed of authoring. She gets to write the happy ending that none of them are sure they will ever get.

This beautiful, heartbreaking story isn’t just about the romance between Jesse and June, but the friendships between the foursome. How her parents stepped in and became surrogates for Jesse when he was otherwise alone because of his family circumstances. Even the staff became family for these kids, and the way TC wrote the connections between all of the characters was wonderful.

Write Me For You is not a lighthearted story. But it is an amazing one that stayed with me long after I sobbed my way through the last chapter. It will rip your heart out. Go in not knowing much about this book; it’s better that way!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Midnight Between Us by Claudia Burgoa

USA Today bestselling author Claudia Burgoa brings you a hauntingly-tender, slow-burn romance full of broken promises, buried secrets, and a love that always endures.

I thought I buried him with the rest of my past. The secrets. The ache. The night everything fell apart.

But now Keir Timberbridge—the traitor, the boy I once loved more than life—is back. Barely alive. In my care. With no memory of who I am or what he did to me.

I should walk away. Hell, I tried. But I’m the only one who can keep him hidden, keep him alive.
This town still thinks I’m the girl who let him go. No one knows the truth—about the letters or what it cost me to survive.

Now we’re playing house in the ruins of what we once were: me, a doctor with too many scars, and him, the man who vanished without a goodbye. We sleep in separate rooms. Share meals like strangers. And every time I look at him, I remember the boy who made promises at midnight… and the man who shattered them by morning.

Because loving Keir Timberbridge was always going to destroy me.

And I might let it again.

Releases exclusively on Amazon and to #KindleUnlimited on July 30th!!!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

This book was a lot! Not just lengthy in size, but sizeable in storyline! Claudia Burgoa packed a lot into this book.

Kier and Simone’s story unfolds between chapters set in the past and in the present, complete with heartwrenching letters she wrote him 2o years ago when he pushed her away when she needed him most. Their reunion comes when Simone least expects it. She’s working as a doctor in a clinic in their small hometown, and she’s ordered by her mysterious bosses to help a patient who was left for dead. She’s shocked to see Kier, the boy she once loved, is the victim, barely clinging to life. Under her boss’s orders, Simone takes Kier to her hidden home in the woods, where she literally has to nurse him back to health and keep him hidden in order to save both of their lives.

Holy. Slow. Burn. Seriously, I thought I would never get to the part where Kier and Simone finally reunite — and it was a doozy of a ride for them to get there! I appreciated that Kier took the time to work on himself and face his demons before he asked Simone for a second chance.

Kier and Simone’s story is narrated by Jason Clarke and CJ Bloom, two narrators I love to listen to. I started in on this straight off of listening to JC narrate a Catherine Cowles new release (Chasing Shelter), and I was amazed at how masterfully he played the two different characters. Both narrators did a great job at capturing the nuances of this emotionally complex story, and I especially loved how JC fluctuated between Kier’s anger and more vulnerable moments.

While Midnight Between Us could be read on its own, I suggest reading this series from the start since the through-line of the mysterious syndicate follows the brothers from one book to the next. I still have so many unanswered questions about that suspense storyline, and can’t wait to see how it continues to unfold in the rest of the Timberbridge Brothers books!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: From West, With Regret by Brittany Taylor

He promised he’d come find me… then I forgot that he existed.

A tragic incident robbed me of any memories I’d ever had before my fourteenth birthday, and I spent the second half of my life wondering if I’d ever get them back.

Years later, on the way to my late husband’s funeral, in a city I don’t know, I slip into a bar to prepare his eulogy on a cocktail napkin. Instead, I end up confessing all my ugly truths about my abusive marriage to the bartender, confident we’ll never cross paths again.

Until I see him a few hours later, sitting beside my husband’s casket.

Turns out Weston Knight isn’t just a bar owner.
He’s also my dead husband’s billionaire brother.

Mortified, I’m desperate to escape, but when West finally catches up with me and offers me a job in one of his many bars in New York City, I can’t find it in me to resist him.

Everything about West feels familiar. His voice. His touch. His kisses.
It isn’t long before he’s consuming my every thought, even in my dreams.

But the closer we become, the more I learn that West has secrets of his own. Ones that have led to a life of regret. And when the memories of my tragic past finally return, I realize that maybe, just maybe, I’ve crossed paths with this man before.

They say you should leave the past behind.

But what if the past is all I’ve ever wanted?

*From West, With Regret is an angsty, spice filled, ex’s brother billionaire romance. It is Book 2 in the NYC Billionaires Series and can be read as a complete standalone, however, it is recommended you read Book 1 first.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh my gosh, I cried reading From West, With Regret. This was such a haunting, beautiful, emotional second-chance romance! I have been itching for West’s story ever since we got a chapter from his POV in From Asher, With Love, and Brittany Taylor did not disappoint!

The book opens with London taking a detour into a bar on the way to her husband’s funeral. They were only married a short time; it was a toxic relationship, and she had never met his family. She strikes up a conversation with the bartender, spilling secrets about her marriage, having no idea that not only is he the owner, but he happens to be her late husband’s brother. Oh yeah… and because London has amnesia, she also has no idea that the guy behind the bar is her first love, West.

There are so many twists and turns in this book, and I loved the exploration into London and West’s connected past. How much they meant to each other once upon a time, how devastated he was to lose her when they were 14 and 15, and how painful it is for him to be so close to her now, yet not be able to tell her who he is.

From West, With Regret deals with some heavy topics: grief, domestic violence, family drama, and so much more. I was consumed with West and London’s story, and their hard-earned HEA was so worth it after all the tears I shed for these two!

This book is a standalone, but the supporting characters are all a close-knit friend group. I enjoyed the updates with Charleigh and Asher, and the tease for what’s ahead in the next book!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I was having a bit of a rough week, and Lead Me Knot proved to be a great escape.

Baylor and Lauralee’s romance starts out as a one-night stand when he unexpectedly and accidentally shows up at her apartment. Neither of them is particularly looking for anything — especially not Baylor, since he lives in New York and not Peachtree Pass, but he ends up falling hard and fast for his sister’s best friend. I really enjoyed the chemistry and banter between these two, and their journey from friends to lovers. This is also the marriage of convenience story, and I loved seeing how Lauralee fell for Baylor despite her best effort not to. That was a great slow burn, and I couldn’t wait for them to acknowledge the real feelings that developed between them.

Lead Me Knot is an interconnected standalone with book 1: Baylor is Christine’s brother, and Lauralee is her best friend, so we’d met these characters before. Lead Me Knot can be read on its own, but I would definitely recommend reading these books in order for the full effect.

Violet and Everett’s story was so sweet and wonderful!

When Violet’s world implodes — her actor husband was cheating on her with his co-star — she moves back to the small town where she spent summers with her grandmother and reconnects with her childhood love, Everett. Even though Violet’s life is currently a mess, Everett wants to rekindle what they once had. But she’s not sure if she’ll be staying in Ember Falls for longer than her year-long teaching contract, and, as his mother’s primary caregiver, Everett can’t ever leave. They agree to take each tomorrow as it comes… but their situationship gets more complicated when Violet discovers that she is pregnant with her ex’s baby. Everett realizes that he doesn’t want to waste the second chance he’s been given with the woman he still loves, but with the odds stacked against them, will they be able to make their relationship work?

I always find Corinne Michaels’ books to be a lovely balance of sweet and spicy, and Against All Odds was no different. There are some old hurt feelings that Violet and Everett have to deal with and put to rest before they can move forward, and I enjoyed those scenes where they realize that they never would have worked back then when they were heading off to college. They both had so much growing up to do. It’s a lovely journey as they reconnect and fall back in love as the grown-up versions of themselves.

I loved catching up with the ultimate frisbee crew and so enjoyed the banter between the guys!

I came here seeking sanctuary. I never meant to fall for the broody single dad next door.

I’ve spent my life hiding in plain sight, burying my past beneath layers of carefully constructed lies. Moving to Sparrow Falls was supposed to be a fresh start, a place to lay low. But when I end up living next door to the single dad who just happens to be one of my brother’s best friends, everything changes.

Trace Colson sees too much and asks too many questions, and his protectiveness is as infuriating as it is alluring.

And when danger comes calling, it’s Trace who stands between me and the darkness.

But being close to him is its own kind of risk. Because with every heated glance and every stolen touch, Trace tempts me to open my heart, to dream of a life I’d long since given up on. The only problem? Trace has his own demons, and when they collide with mine, the fallout could destroy us both.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Chasing Shelter is another fantastic small-town romantic suspense story from Catherine Cowles! I adored grumpy single dad, small-town sheriff Trace and sunshiney Ellie, not just the relationship they developed with each other, but the unit they became with his sweet daughter, Keeley. These two characters had oodles of chemistry from the start, and the duet narration from Jason Clarke and Desiree Ketchum was a winning combo!

Ellie is the sister of Lincoln from Beautiful Exile (#4), and her story begins when she moves to Sparrow Falls after their father is arrested for his numerous crimes and she ends her engagement with her abusive fiancé. Linc wastes no time setting his sister up next door to Arden’s brother… who happens to be the town sheriff. Trace and Ellie get off to a rather rocky start when he saves her from nearly burning down her rental home, and thus Chief and Blaze are born.

This story is full of heat and heart, and has CC’s trademark element of suspense with a heroine in danger. I loved how Jason Clarke played growly Trace and sweet, vulnerable, scared Trace.

Chasing Shelter also set up the story for CC’s next series, which will begin with reclusive hacker Dex, a former colleague of Anson’s. We get to know him a bit when he helps Trace and Co. rescue Ellie, and I am intrigued!

But first… bring on Fallon and Kyler!

Every child deserves to be loved.

Every child deserves parents who love them.

Yet, for as long as I can remember, I’ve harbored an insatiable craving for that one simple thing.

Love.

I was desperate for it. Through years of mistreatment and degradation, I longed for the affection I saw others receive. And I was willing to do anything to prove myself to the people I wanted it from—including going to war.

Yet it was never enough. Nothing ever was.

Except when it came to Laura, my high school sweetheart … and I pushed her away.

Over and over again.

Because how could I possibly deserve love from her—or anyone—if my own parents couldn’t find me worthy of theirs?

Maybe I’m just not worthy of anything.

I love that Max was a side character in Spider & The Storm, and Kelsey Kingsley created this beautifully broken, tragic man who lives in a world of hurt and trauma!

All Max ever wanted was to be loved and seen by his parents. He craved that approval and affection, and he never received it. This book was brutal to read. The hits just keep coming, one after another, and I was hoping, hoping that Max would find a shred of happiness. And then he did when he reconnected with his high school love, Laura. But we know from S&TS that Max was a widower, and how that came to be is just another tragic moment in this man’s life. How many tragedies can one person go through before he breaks? I guess we are about to find out when this story concludes in the second book!

Kudos to Kelsey Kingsley for this story. It is such a haunting tale. While there are romantic aspects, I think it’s more fiction than romance. But it was gripping, and I could not put it down. (I also read it during a particularly dark emotional time in my life, so Max’s story really hit me hard.)

I have my theory about why his father hates him so much, so I am anxious to read Part 2 and see if I am correct! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Natasha Madison closes out her Dream series with Forgotten Dreams.

On the day of her 25th birthday, Sierra’s life was upended when she learned she was adopted. Needing to get away to sort through her feelings, she moves to Montgavin — where she’d been left outside the fire station, hoping to find info about her birth parents. She buys a fixer-upper, and hires local contractor Caleb to do the restoration. The sparks between them are immediate, but Sierra backs off after learning that Caleb dated her best friend, Lilah (from #4, Stolen Dreams).

Of course, the more time Caleb and Sierra spend together, the more feelings grow between them.

In the midst of this sexy and sweet slow-burn romance, Sierra gets closer to finding her birth parents — and that soon becomes a secret that someone wants to keep buried. I loved how the suspense of that storyline mixed with the sexy romance, and just how far Caleb was willing to go to protect Sierra and keep her safe.

While Forgotten Dreams wasn’t my favorite of the series, it was still an enjoyable, entertaining story. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
