Sunny Shelly’s Review: Fries Before Guys, by Lani Lynn Vale

Sometimes people come into a person’s life and make their heart skip a beat.

Those people are called cops.

Well, one cop in particular.

A SWAT officer for the Kilgore Police Department, to be specific.

The first time Avery Flynn saw Derek Roberts, she was photographing him for the first annual Kilgore Police Department SWAT calendar. He was leaned back in his squad car, shirtless, and giving her a smile that was completely between them. A smile that hinted at what he wanted to do to her later.

When she scrounges up the courage to ask him out after the photoshoot, he laughs in her face.

Well, screw you, too, Mr. February.

***

Derek Roberts never really paid attention to the photographer.

She was a mousy girl who dressed like a twelve-year-old girl. Her tight leggings, extra baggy Star Trek t-shirt denoting her a Klingon captain, and her surprisingly clean Chucks didn’t leave much of an impression.

Now, the outfit that she was in weeks after he rebuffed her? Yeah, now that caught his attention.

Too bad that happens when he’s trying to save her from what’s sure to be death thanks to an unhinged native Texan who’s convinced she was the reason he lost his last chance at a million dollars.

When he tries to save her, she tells him she’d rather take a cattle prod to the forehead than go anywhere with him.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

I liked this book, but I didn’t love it. Maybe that’s because I haven’t read the others in this series and I felt a little lost about the other characters. Derek rubbed me the wrong way from the start because he was such a jerk to Avery.

And that poor girl! So much tragedy in her life! Derek really has his work cut out for him in trying to break through her walls. Once he gets past their age difference and the fact that she’s a 19yr old still in high school (for circumstances beyond her control, so I applaud Avery for sticking it out!). He gets there, and he ends up being very understanding and sweet despite the gruff exterior. But I just didn’t fall head over heels for this couple.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Lani Lynn Vale is married to the love of her life that she met in high school. She fell in love with him because he was wearing baseball pants. Ten years later they have three perfectly crazy children and a cat named Demon who likes to wake her up at ungodly times in the night. They live in the greatest state in the world, Texas. She writes contemporary and romantic suspense, and has a love for all things romance.
You can find Lani in front of her computer writing away in her fictional characters world…that is until her husband and kids demand sustenance in the form of food and drink.

Just Friends by Charity Ferrell is #Live! Don’t miss Rex and Carolina’s story! #One-click today!

BOOK BLURB

Someone should have warned me about falling in love with my best friend.

Carolina

Little did I know when Rex came to my locker attempting to bribe me, that he’d turn into my everything.

We’d become best friends. I’d steal his heart. He’d steal mine.

Nothing has changed in the years of our friendship.

Not our connection, not our feelings, or that we still hold each other’s hearts.

But his heart isn’t the only thing I’ve kept.

The secret I’m hiding could shatter the only man I’ve ever loved.

Rex

I’ve loved Carolina since the day she called my bluff.

Our friendship always came first.

She believed in me when no one else did.

I tucked away my feelings because I couldn’t survive a life without her.

We crossed the line once, and I swore it’d never happen again.

As time passes, the harder it becomes to live up to that promise.

Until finally, there’s no holding back.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Everything that you love about a feel-good best friends romance can be found in Just Friends!

I love that we get to see Carolina and Rex in high school, and then later as adults. Their friendship is so solid, and getting to see the history between them goes a long way in getting the reader to invest in them as a couple.
These two are about as opposite as they come: Rex is quite the teenage lothario, and Carolina is the shy, reserved preacher’s kid. But there’s an instant connection between them, and Rex is such a softy when it comes to his best friend. Carolina is definitely his weakness.
But this isn’t just a story where best friends realize there’s something more simmering beneath the surface. There are some secrets that come into play, and how Rex and Carolina handle it brings their friendship to a new level.

I’ve read a few books in the Blue Beech series, and really enjoyed them all. Just Friends is a complete standalone, but we get some visits from some of the other characters as well. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Title: The IT Guy
Author: Andi Burns
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: February 7, 2020
Blurb
Elaine
I love my job, I love my house, and I love my cat. What else
do I need out of life? Hmmm…maybe the hot new IT guy from work. Those
dimples…And don’t get me started on his forearms.
But he’s way too young. Plus, office romance is never a good
idea. Besides, my relationship track record is pitiful and the last thing I
need is to get my heart broken again. So Simon Walker can take his charm, his Star
Wars
sheets, and his genius IQ and sweet talk some sweet young thing.
Simon
Elaine Madigan is easily the most beautiful woman I’ve ever
met. Hilarious. Sexy. Smart. And unfortunately, she’s also convinced herself
that I’m way too young for, so she’s friend-zoned me.
Somehow I need to show her how grown up I really am. I need
her to see that I’m ready to settle down–with her. It’s no easy task, but that
doesn’t scare me. After all, I’m a techie, and cracking codes is what I do. No
matter what it takes, I’ll hack the code to her heart.
The IT Guy by Andi Burns is a dual POV standalone
work romance with a younger hero, office hijinks, lots of laughs, and plenty of
steam.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

The IT Guy is an impressive debut novel. Simon is all kinds of sexy nerd, determined to prove to Elaine that their age difference bears no meaning on how perfect they are for each other.

This book has witty banter, likable characters and lots of fun and funny moments. I look forward to seeing what else comes next from Andi Burns.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt
Simon
We’ve been at this
scavenger hunt for a good half hour, and we’re tied at 5. We’ve got a list of
outlandish costumes and the goal is to spot as many, in real time, as we can.
People watching is fun, but let’s face it: I’ve mostly been watching
Elaine–the way she smiles softly, the way she toys with the ends of her hair
or the bracelets on her wrist. I thought I was crushing before, but spending
time with her one-on-one, (and no, the occasional carpool does not count) has
me completely enchanted.
She scans the bar
again, but the look on her face tells me she’s come up empty. I take a quick
glance around and smile.
“What?”
“Sexy nun for the
win.”
“No freaking way.”
“Yes freaking way.
Sexy nun right at your back. Wait.okay, look now.” I watch her turn to spot a
co-ed in little more than a crop-top and a habit. Seriously, her skirt’s the
size of a business envelope, which could be an issue in the eyes of the Lord.
“Holy crap, that girl will catch pneumonia.”
“Maybe the sexy
doctors at the bar should lend a hand?”
She laughs, and my
heart expands. “Well, sure. It’s the medically responsible thing to do.”
I shake my head at
the visual. “Sounds like a bad porno.”
“Is there such a
thing as a good porno?” The sincerity in her voice makes me choke on my beer.
“Oh, God! I’m sorry!
Are you okay? Here, put your arms up. Maybe you need the sexy doctors?”
I cough loudly and
draw a few stares. I smile in reassurance. “I’m good,” I promise, as I clear my
throat a final time. “I don’t need the sexy doctors. Thoroughly enjoying my
evening with a sexy copy-editor, though.”
Elaine blushes at my
compliment as I flag down the scarecrow. Hell, even I’m impressed with the
level of smooth I’ve been able to maintain. Being with Elaine is so easy that
all–well, okay, a solid 50%–of my awkwardness seems to have dissipated.
The scarecrow
returns and nods when I ask for a refill. She turns to Elaine, “Another for
you, too?”
“Yes, thanks, but
I’ll switch to a Shirley Temple Black.” Scarecrow nods again and disappears
into the crowd.
“Did you seriously
just order a Shirley Temple?  That’s awesome. I don’t think I’ve had one
of those since I was ten.”
She opens her mouth,
and I’d bet my Wookie collection she’s about to knock on my age.
Emboldened by the
fact that I’m making her laugh and this date is going well, despite my
inability to wear matching shoes, I reach across the table and press my finger
to her lips. “Don’t say it.”
She widens her eyes
with innocence, but I’m not fooled. Gifted program, remember? “Don’t. Whatever
crack you were going to say about my age or yours, don’t.” Scarecrow returns
with our drinks, and I accept mine, even if it means pulling my hand away from
Elaine’s lips.
“I wasn’t going to
say anything.” She can’t keep a straight face as she lifts her drink.
“Bullshit. You were
two seconds away from saying something like, ‘When you were ten? What was that?
Three years ago?’” I’m sure I impress her with my exaggerated falsetto.
“Yes, well.” She
looks appropriately and adorably sheepish. “I was merely going to clarify that
a Shirley Temple Black is an improvement on the old standard because it
contains a shot of vodka. And the Black comes in because that was her married
name.”
“Who knew?  And
it’s good, this grown up version?”
“It’s delicious.” She
sips her drink through her straw, and my cock, which has been half hard since
this date began, presses painfully against my fly. Christ. If she starts
talking about porn again, I’ll go out of my damn mind.
She reaches across
the table this time and puts her hand in mine, lacing our fingers together. Her
thumb rubs over my pulse point; it’s barely a touch, but it’s enough to drive
me crazy.
Her hand moves down
to my forearm, and her fingers caress the skin there. It feels good, sure, but
when I look up at her and see the flush on her cheeks and I know she’s getting
turned on by my forearms, I nearly lose it.
She pulls away
quickly, and I’m about to protest or cry like a baby, but she’s toying with the
little plastic sword, and I’m a little mesmerized as she peels a cherry off the
length of the sword, rolls it on the tips of her fingers, and then points it in
my direction. “Want my cherry?”
Sweet. Jesus.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Super cute instalove story! Send Me Crazy starts off with a crazy meet-cute involving a pair of lacy red panties — and everything about Riley and Quinn’s relationship is unconventional and crazy.

I loved how confident Quinn is in her craziness and Riley loves her for it. They both jump in with gusto, but face a real issue between them when it comes to her feelings about her work as a photographer vs his as a firefighter.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

When she isn’t filling pages with sassy and sexy characters with attitude, she’s living her own reality show in the ‘burbs of Melbourne with her American husband, two teenage children, and her fur child—Woodley.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

When 28 yr old single dad Porter meets a hot 20 yr old college student at the local pizza joint, they have an immediate connection, only share first names and have an amazing one night stand. But Dory-Like-The-Fish was meant to be in Porter’s life, because they are both stunned when she ends up being one of his nanny interviews the following morning.

While things could have been awkward between them, Porter and Dory handle the situation well, amd she really makes it a point to not accept hand-outs from him just because she’s broke and he’s a millionaire. But Porter’s been where she is before, and the understanding he has for her situatino went a long way for me in shipping this couple.

I love that she withheld kissing on the lips the night they first met, because that means something more to her. When Dory finally gives in, it means everything to both of them… and I was on pins and needles waiting for it to happen.

As for Kyrie, she is a precocious little girl and kept her dad and nanny in line! The girl cracked me up! If you’ve read the other books in this “Slice” series, there are plenty of appearances from the other couples, as both Porter and Dory have ties to them. But I didn’t feel like I was picking up in the middle of the story; the friends add to the story, but you don’t need to know their backgrounds to understand what’s going on with Porter and Dory.

Doughn’t Let Me Go is a wonderful story about finding the one who makes you happy and hanging on for dear life. Dory has baggage, Porter has baggage. They both had troubled childhoods, but they are a perfect match for one another.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

He believes in fate…

Hotshot, an all-new slow-burn second-chance romance from USA Today bestselling author Robin Bielman, is available now!

hotshot-300dpi

Here’s my plan: Crash through the ceiling of my family’s business to become the best hotelier on the West Coast. Nothing rattles me when it comes to a challenge and hard work, but when I spot my almost one-night-stand in my lobby, I’m thrown totally off my game. Alejandra is my dream girl. The one I can’t forget who got away—literally. Which might explain why I blurt out to my meddlesome, matchmaking grandmother that Alejandra is my date for her fast approaching and highly choreographed eightieth birthday party.

She’s been on pause…

Some decisions are harder than others, but agreeing to a date with Drew isn’t one of them. He’s a charming and gorgeous curveball I didn’t see coming, but the more time we spend together, the harder it is to remember to play it safe. I’ve made a promise, and even though I’m now torn, I have to honor it in order to move on from the past.

Drew feels like my future, but I’m about to put everything I want in jeopardy.

She’s the one who got away…. Months after a quick meeting, Drew cannot believe his eyes when he sees Alejandra in his hotel restaurant. He hasn’t been able to get her out of his mind, and has sworn off casual dating until he finds the one who gives him all the feels. Alejandra’s put her romantic life on hold while her ex is working in New Zeland for a year. She agrees to some casual dates with Drew (and is kind of tricked into attending his grandmother’s 80th birthday party as his date in a few weeks). But Allie doesn’t let herself totally let go, because her ex, Matthew, is still on the back of her mind.

But Drew is determined to show her just how good they can be together in the few weeks that they have, so he jumps at the chance to move her into his hotel suite when her house is flooded. Their relationship is a sweet slow-burn, yet Robin Bielman does a great job of making the reader understand why Allie is so conflicted when she starts to fall for Drew. There’s also a nice contrast with his position of wealth versus her needing funds to save the senior center where she works that causes some trouble for Drew and Al to work though. Drew had been badly burned by a girlfriend in the past, so his insecurities come into play nicely when it comes to Alejandra’s date to meet Matthew upon his return.

The story is full of heart and humor, sweet family moments, a zany nosy grandmother and the conflict between letting go of the past and not letting it affect your future.

This is a standalone within the American Royalty series, but if you’ve read the others, there are some nice moments between Drew and his brothers Finn and Ethan, and a update on the other couples in the epilogue. And nosy Grandmother is a hoot as she plays matchmaker! I somehow missed the middle book in this series featuring Ethan and Pascale, and now I need to go track it down! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Then You Happened, an all-new small town stand-alone romance from New York Times bestselling author K. Bromberg, is available now!

THEN-YOU-HAPPENED-KRISTY-BROMBERG

Jack Sutton was the man I didn’t want to need.

His know-it-all attitude. His annoying suggestions. His outlook on life.

He was determined to help me while I had resolved to figure it out on my own.

But he taught me things I’d forgotten.

How to trust. How to believe in myself. Who I was.

The problem?

I went and fell in love with him.

Tatum Knox was the disaster I should have walked away from.

Her ruined reputation. Her failing business. Her chaotic life.

She hated me at first sight and yet intrigued me all at the same time.

I was only supposed to be there six months.

I was supposed to use that time to make amends for things I’d done wrong.

Instead I fell in love with her.

They say it’s better to have loved and lost, then not to have loved at all. Does that hold true when the love is based on a lie to begin with?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Then You Happened is a super angsty slow burn romance. Tatum is a widow trying to hold her life together in the wake of her husband’s death, struggling to keep her ranch afloat despite the rumors about her in town. She reluctantly hires Jack to be the ranch manager, and he pushes all of her buttons… but makes her feel alive for the first time in years. Neither one of them wanted to get involved with the other… “but then you happened,” as Jack says.

There is a very pointed reason why Jack needed to keep his distance, and I figured it out pretty easily. But the lead-up to Tate discovering Jack’s truth makes this story super angsty, and the blow-out is pretty epic. As is Jack’s plan to win her back.

Kristy Bromberg puts out a pretty hot cowboy story with Then You Happened. There is good character development between Tate and Jack, and the mysteries surrounding Fletcher’s death and why the town residents hate her so much add a nice dimension to the story. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Together We Caught Fire, by Eva V. Gibson

image001.jpg

A forbidden attraction grows even more complicated when the guy Lane Jamison has crushed on for years suddenly becomes her step-brother in this sexy and gorgeously written debut novel about the lines between love, desire, and obsession.

What happens when the boy you want most becomes the one person you can’t have?

Lane Jamison’s life is turned upside down the week before her senior year when her father introduces her to his new fiancée: mother of Grey McIntyre, Lane’s secret, longtime crush. Now with Grey living in Lane’s house, there’s only a thin wall separating their rooms, making it harder and harder to deny their growing mutual attraction—an attraction made all the more forbidden by Grey’s long-term girlfriend Sadie Hall, who also happens to be Lane’s friend

Torn between her feelings for Grey and her friendship with Sadie—not to mention her desire to keep the peace at home—Lane befriends Sadie’s older brother, Connor, the black sheep of the strict, evangelical Hall family. Connor, a metal working artist who is all sharp edges, challenges Lane in ways no one else ever has. As the two become closer and start to open up about the traumas in their respective pasts, Lane begins to question her conviction that Connor is just a distraction.

Tensions come to a head after a tragic incident at a party, forcing Lane to untangle her feelings for both boys and face the truth of what—and who—she wants, in this gripping and stunningly romantic debut novel.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

This book did not go the way I was expecting based on the blurb. I was expecting a stepbrother romance between Land and Grey, but that’s not at all what this story is about. It’s super-angsty, but the main romance ends up between Lane and Grey’s girlfriend’s brother, Connor.

There is a lot of family drama in this book, and it was hard to keep track of it all at points. While I thought the mental health and reproductive health (Lane has endometriosis) elements were interesting and handled well within the story, I just did not like most of the characters. Lane grew on me, eventually, and Connor was just okay. But I found Sadie to be a hypocrite and a mean girl, and Grey was just a walking disaster of a jerk. After years of having a crush on Grey, Lane was just suddenly over him in the blink of an eye. I don’t know what she saw in him to begin with.

Ultimately, I don’t know that I would recommend this YA read. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: You’re The One, by Layla Hagen

Very Irresistible Bachelors #1

Release Date: February 4

Hot.

Flirty.

Romantic.

It all started as pretend…

My best friend and one of the most powerful men in New York, needed my help.

Our first kiss was unexpected –but it still made my skin sizzle, my knees go weak.

The next one was in front of his tight-knit family. We had to be convincing. But it was so wicked hot, it almost convinced me too.

On our first night together, he told me that I had to keep us both in check, because he didn’t know how to keep the lines from blurring…

He touched me like I was precious, and held me close…barely stopping his fingers from pushing down the straps of my dress…

On our second night, our banter turned to flirting.

Hunter –my best friend was now Hunter–the man.

Intense.

Alluring.

Sexy as hell.

You’re The One puts a twist on the fake-marriage trope when best friends Hunter and Josie tie the knot to prevent him from being deported. Hunter has lived in the US since he was a kid, but never got his green card. The fact that Josie’s an attorney puts her at a huge risk, but because Hunter has always been a loyal friend for the past 15 years since they met in high school, she puts her neck on the line for him.

I really liked that there’s already a lot of history and friendship between Hunter and Josie. Their friendship goes back years, and there is a lot that they already know about one another. And since they are both already fighting growing feelings for the other, lines cross easily as they have a hard time keeping things fake.

This book is also a series-starter, as Hunter has a wide circle of cousins, whom I presume will be featured in subsequent books. I’m intrigued, Layla. Very intrigued. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Lying Season, by K.A. Linde

A new second chance standalone office romance from USA Today bestselling author K.A. Linde…

Walking away from Sam Rutherford was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.
It’s been five years since that day, and I’ve given up on looking for love. My focus is on my career. And it’s paid off–I’m successfully managing the reelection for the mayor of New York City.

Then Sam walks into my office as the new legal counsel. Which means I have to see him every single day from now until November. We vow to remain professional, but it’s a small office. The sly glances and his blistering charm are unavoidable.

It all feels so familiar. Too comfortable. After what happened the first time… I should know better.

If I’m not careful, he’ll break my heart all over again.

And I don’t know if I can survive Sam a second time.

The Lying Season was good. But I didn’t find it to be GREAT, and here’s why: it’s marketed as a stand-alone, but I spent the first quarter of the book wondering why there were so many characters and when I was going to get to Lark and Sam. All those characters? From previous books that I haven’t read. I get it. I love getting catch-ups on other characters/couples from an author’s body of work with series that I’ve read. But not at the expense of the main couple at hand. And I felt like I had missed out on who Lark was and her background as a result.

But as for Sam and Lark themselves… it’s an interesting story. She never thought she’d see him again, and he was always the one that got away. Five years later, they are working on the same political campaign again and old feelings rise to the surface. Complicating matters is that Sam’s girlfriend is out of town, and she kinda put them on a break before she left. Will he cross the line as he spends so much time with Lark?

The story was interesting, even if I did feel like I joined in the middle. Overall, I can’t say that I loved The Lying Season. I didn’t feel an immediate connection to Lark and Sam, probably because I felt like I joined the story after it began. And what’s with all the Upper East Side clinches? Hello, Mean Girls. Anyway… This seems to be the starter of a new series… will I check the rest of it out? Maybe. Lark’s circle of friends are intriguing, so I haven’t fully made up my mind on that one.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
