Review: Writing My Own Destiny

WMOD NA.jpg

What happens when two romance writers fall in love?

Writing My Own Destiny is a fun, quirky read that gives us bookaholics an inside look into the world of romance writers. What happens when two romance writers hook up? And better yet, what do you do when a few days of fun turns into something much more and you live on opposite sides of the world?

This story is like a coming of age tale for Cait in a way, even though she’s a divorced 40 year old mom. She really comes out of her shell in meeting CJ. And CJ is definitely all alpha male, but it’s so sweet when he lets his vulnerable side show through. A cute story of friends with benefits turning into something potentially life-changing.

‘We love Aussies,’ they said, ‘the readers will eat you up’.

Those seven little words got me on a plane to the USA for the ‘Raunchy with a touch of sexiness – Valentine’s Day Author Event’ in Miami.

I’m a romance author. A girl with a vivid imagination, and an overactive sex drive.

Oh, and yes I’m Australian

When I agreed the so-called love of my life had just walked out on me, leaving me with two little girls. All I wanted was a little fun and some no strings attached fun while I was there.

It would be my very own ‘what happens in Miami, stays in Miami’.

Unless I fall in love with an American….

There’s no such thing as a happily ever after in real life.

Review: Book Boyfriend, Claire Kingsley

At some point in time, you know you wished that the hero in the book you were reading was real. Like, for real real. In her latest romcom, Book Boyfriend, Claire Kingsley makes every reader’s dream come true when she makes every one of us the heroine!

Well, except that unlike Mia, I am married. But if I was single, I swear Mia would be my best friend. She’s clumsy, a bit awkward and always has her nose stuck in a book. So when she literally bumps into a hot AF guy in a bookstore of all places and he OFFERS TO BUY HER BOOKS, she understandably thinks that she is dreaming. How many of us book addicts haven’t wished for a book boyfriend to come to life?

Alex is so book-boyfriend perfect. Duh. I love, love, love that the obstacle between them is his secret life as a romance book author, who happens to be one of Mia’s besties in her secret life as a book blogger, because these two are so perfectly matched. There are so many moments that made me laugh out loud, and I wanted to slam shut my Kindle in all the right places.

“It’s like the only chocolate I’ve ever tasted is a Hershey kiss and Alex is f****** Godiva.” That line is BRILLIANT!

I pretty much read this story in a single sitting, aside from fulfilling a few basic parenting requirements. Braxton from Always Has has long been at the top of my book boyfriend list, but Alex has now claimed that coveted spot.

Claire has her work cut out for her with her future books, because I don’t see how she can possibly do better than Alex Lawson! That epilogue! This book already has all the feels, but the epilogue will definitely push you over the emotional edge!

She’s all I could ever want…

I have a reputation around school. Cold. Untouchable. Unfeeling. Only one girl could ever make me want to change and that’s Amanda Winters. Too bad I broke her heart and drove her away.

So to get through the rest of my days in high school, I tell myself I need to focus on more important things. Like taking our football team to championships. Get accepted to the college of my choice. And finish my senior year without wanting to run away from my problems.

But your problems chase after you no matter where you go. And it’s a lot harder when you fight them alone. The longer I go without Amanda, the more I miss her. Her smile. Her laughter. The things she said. How she looked at me like I was the only person who mattered. The way she made me feel…

Why can’t I have everything, including the girl? I’m determined to make things right. And make Amanda mine…

Forever.

From Book Reviewer To Book Blogger

I’m a reader. I’ve always been a reader. There were countless nights when I was a kid where my mom would find me — way past my bedtime — huddled under the covers, with a book and little flashlight in hand. I loved getting the Scholastic Book Club newsletter each month in school. I’m pretty positive that my love for romance novels began with those dang Sweet Valley High twins and the Wildfire YA books, waaaay before I had any idea what YA meant. (I wish I knew what happened to my dog-eared copy of Loving That O’Connor Boy. Sigh.)

It really didn’t surprise many who knew me that I majored in English Lit in college. Twenty years later, I’m still trying to “find the time” to write that romance novel I had grand plans to pen. Until then, I spend my days working as an editor for a national consumer magazine, my evenings being a wife and mom — and my nights? I still spend those huddled under the covers, reading. Except now, I traded in my dog-eared paperbacks for a Kindle with a built-in backlight, so I don’t need to juggle my book and the flashlight.

I not only love to read, but in the past year or so, realized how much I love to review the books that I’ve read. As I’ve watched my Amazon and Goodreads profiles grow longer and longer, I’ve been toying around with the idea of giving this book blogging thing a try. Tonight, my friends, I bit the bullet.

So there you have it. Welcome, friends, to Sunny Shelly Reads.
