Now Live! Pretty Little Player, by J. Kenner

Pretty Little Player RB banner.jpg

Pretty Little Player, a sexy, new standalone from New York Times bestselling author J. Kenner, is available now!

PLP-full wrap-promo use only.jpg

Bedroom games are fine … but I need a woman who won’t play with my heart.

After years in the military, I’ve faced down a lot of things, and there’s not much I shy away from. Except relationships. Because when you catch your wife in bed with another man, that tends to sour even the most hardened man against women.

When I was hired to keep surveillance on a woman with a checkered past, I went into the job anticipating the worst. But what I found was a woman who turned my head. Who made my blood heat and my body burn. A woman who made me feel alive again.

A woman who was nothing like what I expected, but everything I wanted. A woman who, it turned out, needed my protection. And wanted my touch.

And as the world fell out from under us, and everything I thought I knew shifted, there was only one reality I could hold onto—that the more I got to know her, the more I wanted her.

But if I’m going to make her mine, I’ll have to not only keep her safe, I’ll have to prove to her that I’ve conquered my own fears and doubts. That I’m done looking into the past, and that all I want is a future—with her.

Blurb:

From the time I was a kid, I knew I wanted a job helping people. After serving in the Rifles regiment of the British Army, I focused my civilian career on becoming a bodyguard to the rich and famous. For a Cockney Brit, I never imagined a twist of fate landing me a position in the United States Secret Service and protecting the President’s son. But then my boss made an unexpected request: leave my current placement to move in with his only daughter to give an added layer of protection against the threats she had been receiving. I’d never lived with a woman who was off-limits to me. It wasn’t just that Caroline had a boyfriend. She was my best friend’s sister, and my boss’s daughter. But the longer we’re in such close quarters together, the greater the temptation grows, but I know I’ll lose everything if I pursue her.

Growing up as the only girl and with two overbearing older brothers, I’m no stranger to being overprotected. Just as I finished up college and prepared to truly dip my toes into the adult world, my father was elected President of the United States, which added a whole new level of protection with the Secret Service team attached to me. Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly be more smothered, I began receiving threats, and my family decided it wasn’t enough to just have an agent living down the hall from me. Nope, I was to have one move in with me, and not just any agent, but Ty Frasier—my brother, Barrett’s best friend, and my brother, Ty’s, head agent. While most women would enjoy living with a sexy, buff Brit, having a roommate threw a wrench into all my plans. Especially when I began noticing Ty was so much more than a hot guy.

Excerpt:

After we spent a considerable amount of time perusing the aisles of the Piggly Wiggly, Caroline was finally finished, and we made our way to the checkout. In true small town fashion, she struck up a conversation with the middle-aged cashier. While she appeared utterly charming, I probably came off as an ass because I kept looking around and narrowing my eyes at anyone who might look suspicious. Especially the male middle-aged cashier who seemed utterly enthralled by Caroline.

At the sight of us coming out the mechanized doors, Stuart began easing the SUV closer to our place on the curb. After popping the hatch, Caroline wheeled the cart over to the back of the SUV. Just as I was about to start helping her with the bags, I heard a shout behind me. “Hey! Come back here.”

Whirling around, I saw a man waving wildly at Caroline. “Fuck! Assailant!” Stuart shouted.

I shoved myself between the man and Caroline, shielding her from him. Grabbing her by the waist, I hoisted her up and threw her in the back of the SUV. “Omph!” she cried as her body bounced on the carpeting of the hatch. After slamming the door, I stepped back just as Stuart screeched away from the curb.

Now that I knew Caroline was safe, I turned my attention back to the man. Hurling myself at him, I took him down to the curb. “What are you doing?” he demanded.

“Stay down. I’m calling the police.”

“The police? But what did I do?”

“You’ve been harassing the President’s daughter.”

“I just came out to give her the coupons she forgot.”

“What?”

He nodded. “Look in my right hand.”

After rocking back on my knees, I grabbed his arm and pried the contents out of his hand. Once I unraveled it, I grimaced. “Son of a bitch.”

I had completely and utterly misread the situation. Speaking into my microphone, I said, “Stuart, it’s a false alarm.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?” he blared into my ear.

“No, I’m not.”

“We’re headed back.”

“Roger.”

I figured then it was past time for me to get off the man. I rose to my feet before reaching down to help him up. I brushed off his white shirt I had accidentally dirtied when I knocked him to the ground. Upon closer inspection, I saw the nametag on his shirt. “Sheldon, I’m terribly sorry for my actions.”

He narrowed his brown eyes at me. “I think it’s me who needs to be calling the police.”

“That won’t be necessary.” Reaching into my pocket, I fished out my badge. As I flashed it at him, I said, “Agent Fraser with the U.S. Secret Service.”

His eyes bulged before he gasped. “Wait, that was President Callahan’s daughter?”

“Yes, sir, it was. I hope you can understand that we take the safety of the president’s children very seriously, and upon first reflection, it appeared you might’ve been preparing to harm Ms. Callahan.”

“Oh, no. I would never want to do that. I voted for her dad. Never thought I’d vote for an Independent, but he won me over.”

“I’m happy to hear that, sir. I certainly hope this unfortunate incident won’t in anyway skew your views on him.”

He waved a hand dismissively at me. “No, no. I understand. More than that, I can’t wait to go home and tell my wife that Caroline Callahan came into my store today.”

For my sake, I hoped he left out the part where a Secret Service agent mowed him down because he thought Piggly Wiggly coupons were a weapon. Once the other agents found out about this, I was going to catch hell in the form of their constant ribbing. At least Stuart would be going down with me. He’d made the assumption to start with.

After Stuart drove up, he made quick work of putting the SUV in park and opening the hatch. I hopped off the curb and went over to the back. Caroline sat with her knees pulled against her chest. When she pursed her lips at me, I held up my hands. “I’m sorry. It was a false alarm.”

“That’s what Stuart said.”

“We can never be too careful.”

An amused look twinkled in her blue eyes. “Apparently not when we find grocery cashiers a threat to my safety.”

“He appeared to have a weapon in his hand, and he was shouting at you,” I argued.

“I believe the weapon turned out to be coupons.”

Man, she was really on my dick about this one. Shit. I should never think of Caroline on my dick in any form or fashion. It was just too wrong. “Yes, the weapon turned out to be your coupons.”

“Right.”

I extended my hand to her. “Come on and get out, so we can load the groceries up and get the hell out of here.”

After I helped Caroline slide out of the back, she started helping me load the bags. “Should I go inside and offer an autograph to smooth things over? This is the closest grocery store to the apartment, so I’d hate to not ever be able to come here again because you clothes-lined a guy.”

“I didn’t clothes-line him. I merely took him down as part of protocol.”

“I’d say you lost your calling in football, that’s for sure.”

Too bad my girl isn’t following the script.

Short of riding in on a white horse, I’m at a loss of how to win her back.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

A great ending to this trilogy!!

ReWined Vol. 3 picks up right where Vol. 2 left off — after multiple prologues where we FINALLY learn what happened that split up Tyler and Paris as teenagers. That plot point put so much about this story into perspective!

So we pick up right where Tyler has uncovered secrets and lies about his dad, his mom, Paris’ sister and Wilhemina. As Tyler struggles to come to terms with everything he’s known about his life being a huge lie, he pushes Paris away. Maybe he didn’t mean to do it, but it cracks their already tentative relationship and it’s enough for Paris to go running in fear of his self-destructive behavior.

It’s the wake-up call that Tyler needs to prove that he’s matured and committed to their marriage of convenience — and that he wants Paris as his wife in every way. There are some ups and downs in their journey, but eventually, Tyler and Paris re-wind their history, their family feuds, and get the happily ever after they both deserve.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Another fantastic romcom from Lauren Blakeley! Once again, she shows why she is the queen of romcoms with Unzipped!

Hot nerd Kyler — or is it Tom? — goes all Lloyd Dobler to win back his college love… only to find that she doesn’t live where he thinks she does. Instead, he makes quite the impression on struggling comedy writer Finley, who promises to help him win Cassie back in exchange for being her muse to turn her soon-to-be-cancelled show around.

The love lessons that Finley gives to this hot nerd — I love the hot nerd trope! — fail big time when they both develop feelings for one another. Finley has been the rebound girl before and tries to remind herself that Tom’s heart lies with someone else. And Tom/Kyler quickly realizes that the woman he’s “practice dating” is the one he really wants to be with… if he can only prove to her that she’s not second best.

The plot to this book spun the dating lessons around to where the heroine is the teacher. And I love, love, love all of the references to the 1980s films in this book! Lloyd Dobler will forever be my favorite 80s romcom hero, but Kyler “Tom” Sutcliffe has claimed the hot nerd spot amongst my book boyfriends.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

If, like me, you are a fan of growly, surly alphas who despite their best efforts, fall in love with sweet innocent women, then As You Were is a rockstar romance that is right up your alley.

Zeke is such a major grump, but Willow brings out a side to him that few people get to see. She’s all that is good, and he’s a beautiful broken mess of a man. But eventually, he lets her see what he’s hiding behind his mask of arrogance, and she finds the beautiful soul that she knew was hidden in there.

This book is a marvelous slow burn with two delightful characters, witty banter, and some blush-worthy dirty talk. This is the first book I’ve read by Lee Piper, and I’ll definitely be checking out more from this series! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

This book! I absolutely adored everything about this book!

The concept is great: Fallen reality star Theo Legend — dubbed Theo-dog by the media — hires reality competition runner-up Hadley Holiday, a dog trainer, to “train” him on how to rehab his reputation. Theo has a major crush on Hadley from watching her on TV, and he is pleasantly surprised that there is a spark between them from Day 1. But what he never expects is that Hadley will save his heart, mind and soul from a life of loneliness and self-destruction.

Schlosser brilliantly contrasted the simple, happy family life that Hadley has led against the opulent, cold life of wealth that Theo grew up in. When Theo finally confessed the details of his childhood, my heart absolutely broke for him!

Hadley — and her quirky, crazy parents! — healed Theo in so many ways. She truly saved him, showed him what unconditional love is like, and even helped him heal his very fractured relationship with his brother, Aiden. (I would LOVE to see Aiden get his own story!!)

Untrainable was a laugh-out-loud romcom, but it was also an extraordinarily sweet romance between a damaged guy who doesn’t think he’s worthy of love, and the simple dog trainer who proves him wrong.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt
“Okay. Change of plans—pie first,
cleaning later. I get weepy when I’m hanky.”
“Hanky?” Theo
followed me to the kitchen.
“It’s a
portmanteau.” Walking over to the table, I removed the foil from the dish.
Steam billowed up, carrying the heavenly scent of apples and cinnamon with it.
“I’m sorry, a
what?” Sounding utterly confused, Theo went over to a small white coffee maker
next to the sink and punched a button. It sputtered for a few seconds before
the aroma filled the room.
He grabbed two
mismatching mugs from the cabinet. Setting them down, he leaned back against
the counter while he waited for me to explain.
“Blending two words
to make one,” I said. “Hungry and cranky equals hanky.”
“Isn’t the term
‘hangry?’”
“No, I don’t think
that fits. I don’t get mad,” I clarified. “Just irritable.”
“It’s kinda like my
nickname, huh? Putting Theodore and dog together.”
“Yeah, kind of like
that.” I grimaced because he obviously wasn’t a fan of the combination. “I’m
sure whoever came up with that thought they were being very clever.”
“They probably got
promoted.”
“Probably.”
“Well, I’m feeling
mighty humpy myself.” When he said the word ‘humpy’, I could’ve sworn I saw his
pelvis do a slight thrust.
I almost fell over.
“Excuse me?”
He sent me a grin
that did funny things to my stomach. “Portmanteau. Hungry and grumpy. Humpy.”
That was
inappropriate but also correct. I couldn’t knock him for coming up with his own
word, even if it did draw my attention to his groin.
I tried to force
myself to look away from his lower half, but it was really difficult.
Because now that I
wasn’t scrutinizing his living quarters, my thoughts went elsewhere: straight
to the gutter.
The gray fabric of
his pants stretched over his crotch, and he probably wasn’t wearing underwear
because I could see a very distinct outline of his dick.
I didn’t mean to
stare at it, but it was just right there.
Out in the open. And alarmingly large. It was like spotting
a rare animal in the wild. The thing practically needed its own Australian
accented voiceover.
Inexperienced as I
was when it came to actual sex, I wasn’t completely innocent. I knew what a
semi-erect penis looked like. The length of it rested against his thigh and the
definition of the thick head was impressive.
I swallowed hard.
“Hey.” Theo’s voice
startled me, and my eyes snapped up to his.
My cheeks were on
fire. I’d been caught, and I wanted nothing more than to sink under the table
and hide.
“Hi,” I squeaked,
lowering myself into the chair.
“Let’s just blame
the rough start to the day on low blood sugar. Deal?”
Well, that wasn’t
what I’d expected him to say, but it was a lot better than him calling me out
for eye-balling his junk.
“Deal,” I
responded. Then for my own benefit, I added the reminder, “I’m looking forward
to being coworkers and friends.”
His left eyebrow
arched on the word ‘friends.’
Dang it. Maybe he
did see me checking him out after all.
For the sake of my
sanity, I really hoped he was planning to wear jeans for the show. And maybe
some underwear with crotch-confining support. Like a girdle, but for penises.

Title: The Way You Are

Series: Carolina Connections #5

Author: Sylvie Stewart

Publisher: Rolling Hearts Press

Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: December 12, 2018
Blurb
“They say nice
guys always finish last. I say the only place that should
apply is in the bedroom—it’s just good manners, after all.” – Brett MacKinnon,
nice guy and frequent resident of the friend zone
LIV: There are
really only three things I need in life: sex, baseball, and winning. My hot
boyfriend and season tickets take care of the first two, while I always do my
best to cover the last. So developing an unexpected crush on a new friend is
more than a little inconvenient. I don’t have anything but friendship to offer
Brett, but with the way he looks at me, he has me wishing I did.
BRETT: I’ve been
put in the friend zone so often, they’ve got a sandwich named after me. You’d
think I’d be used to it by now. But when it comes to the delectable Liv, I’m
determined to ditch the friend zone and show her I’m boyfriend material. Too
bad the position’s already been filled by a ball-playing caveman who could
flatten me with his pinky.
What will it take to show Liv that nice guys can be more than just
friends, and that love is the one game truly worth winning?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

If you love a story where the friend-zoned guy gets the girl, then The Way You Are is definitely a book you’ll want to check out! I loved how sweet and kind Brett is. And Liv is hysterical! She’s the kind of girl you want to be friends with.

Their banter is witty, the connection between the characters was genuine, and Brett and Liv’s friends do their part to support the couple without taking over the show. This book had all the right pieces to make it a romcom that I could not put down! They both found someone who loves them just the way you are!

The Way You Are is the first book I’ve read in the Carolina Connections series, and I can say that it does read as a standalone. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt
It was then I realized I was wearing a t-shirt, boxer
briefs, and nothing else. Fuck. Me. I snatched the beer bottle up in a panic
and turned to the sink. “Uh, yeah. So, I hope it’s okay that your dog just
drank a beer.”
“Bo!” She scolded the dog but didn’t sound like she meant
it. “You pledging a fraternity now?” I heard her pat him. “Go on. You cleaned
it up enough.”
The dog smacked his jaws one more time and his nails clicked
on the tile floor as he retreated to the living room.
I glanced over my shoulder. “Sorry I woke you up.”
“You didn’t. I was having trouble sleeping.” She sidled up
to the counter next to the sink where I stood with my crotch pressed against
the cabinet. “You know, unfamiliar bed,” she explained, leaning forward and
propping her cheek on a hand. “What about you?” I swear I caught a smirk
threatening.
“Uh, same. Couldn’t sleep.” This was ridiculous. “You want a
beer? I’ve got a couple more in the fridge, unless you want to finish the one
your dog started.”
“No, thanks.” She pushed back off the counter and I turned
around without thinking. Her eyes shot right to my junk and I winced inwardly.
My only hope was that it was too dark for her to see much of anything.
But it was no hope. She pulled her lips between her teeth to
suppress her smile… or laugh… or whatever the hell she was thinking.
I threw my hands out, launching the paper towel roll over
the counter and into the next room. “I’m a guy! What do you want me to say?” I
brought one hand back in a gesture up and down her small frame. “A girl walks
around in her underwear and the cock gets a mind of his own.”
Her mouth flew open and she looked down at her skimpy
clothes. “I’m not in my underwear!”
“May as well be,” I shot back. I had nothing to lose at this
point. I might as well have been standing there stark raving naked with my dick
bobbing in the air.
“You’re the one in your underwear!” Again, she drew
attention back to my straining cock before having the decency to look back up
at my face.
“I guarantee the material I’m wearing could make six of what
you’re wearing!”
“These are pajamas.” She pulled at the material of her top,
making it stretch tighter over her tits.
“You’re not helping!” I shouted, which just brought her
attention to my dick yet again. At this rate, it was likely to make an
appearance over the waistband of my boxer briefs.
She crossed her arms. “Are you sure about that?” She raised
a brow and I couldn’t take it anymore. I stalked past her. It wasn’t that I
couldn’t find humor in the situation—or, more likely, wouldn’t be able to a few
weeks from now. It was that I didn’t want to be a joke to her, and I was afraid
that’s what I might be.
“I’m sorry.” She grabbed my arm as I passed, and the feel of
her fingers flexing on my skin stilled me. “Sometimes I can’t help myself. I
mean, you’re standing here in your underwear with a sizeable hard-on. It’s not
like I can just ignore it.”
“I’d actually prefer if you did.” Then I paused and
backtracked a few seconds. She said sizeable. Nice.

USA Today bestselling author Sylvie Stewart is
addicted to Romantic Comedy and Contemporary Romance, and she’s not looking for
a cure. She hails from the great state of North Carolina, so it’s no surprise
that most of her books are set in the Tar Heel state. She’s a wife to a
hilarious dude and mommy to ten-year-old twin boys who tend to take after
their father in every way. Sylvie often wonders if they’re actually hers, but
then she remembers being a human incubator for a gazillion months. Ah, good
times.
Sylvie began publishing when her kids started elementary
school, and she loves sharing her stories with readers and hopefully making
them laugh and swoon a bit along the way. If she’s not in her comfy green

Blog Tour: Sunny Shelly Reviews Fixing Him, by Miranda Elaine

FIxingHim_BT.jpg

Fixing Him, an all-new romantic standalone from Miranda Elaine is available now!

FixingHim_EB.jpg

One summer.

Three months.

Ninety days spent learning every inch of Sam Matthews’ body.

We agreed to no strings when our time was up.

We promised we could both handle this.

I lied.

I never expected to fall for this man or this town.

This was just supposed to be a stop on the way to starting my real life.

But now, time is up and everything feels wrong.

He says I’m too young.

He says I’m too innocent.

He says he’s not the type to settle down.

He’s fixing my newly inherited home.

Now, I’m fixing his frame of mind.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Fixing Him is another book in Miranda Elaine’s Fixing series of standalones. It’s the story of hard-working, responsible, no-nonsense Sam (best friend of Asher Kade from Fixing Her) and free spirit Montana, who is just passing through for the summer.

Montana hires Sam to renovate her grandfather’s lake house, which she recently inherited, so she can sell it. He’s not looking for a relationship, and she’s just in town for the summer. With an intense sexual chemistry between them, it’s the perfect no-strings-attached summer fling. Until it isn’t.

I love a romance where the guy who isn’t looking for a relationship gets brought to his knees by the last person he was expecting. That’s exactly what happens to Sam when Montana barrels into his life. He thinks that he has too many responsibilities (between wanting to become a partner in Kade’s construction business and his disabled dad) to be the kind of boyfriend that Montana deserves. And because of the emotional scars left by the mother who abandoned him, Sam doesn’t think he’s deserving of love. But even though their fling has an expiration date, both Sam and Montana fall deep. He’s such a kind-hearted gentleman, how could she not?

Fixing Him is full of tender moments, an adorable pet pig, and plenty of catching up with Asher, Temperence, Ellie and Leigh. I hope that we get Leigh’s story ASAP!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt:

“Fuck,” I cry out as we near the cabin. All afternoon it’s been drizzling but not enough to stop our day out by the water. We’re almost back when we hear the first bout of thunder.

It’s deafeningly loud but thankfully not too close . . . yet.

“We should hurry up. Pick up the pace, old man.” She jumps with each thunderclap.

“I could probably go a little faster if you weren’t on my back.” I look over my shoulder and her smile is from ear to ear.

“Wasn’t my idea to hike five miles along the river shore, over rocky hills, and through snake-infested woods. I brought two pairs of shorts, two shirts, two swimsuits, and miscellaneous underwear. But someone forgot to mention the need for sneakers on this surprise vacation.”

“I’m not complaining about you being plastered to me.” I hold her thighs in my hands a tad bit tighter than necessary. I feel the first drop of real rain hit the top of my head.

She wiggles free, scooting down my back, ready to make a run for the cabin when a huge downpour hits us. I’m about to take off running, her hand in mine when I feel resistance on the end of my arm.

“What’s wrong?” I ask as she keeps her feet planted firmly to the ground as the wind and rain pick up all around us. Her loose blond waves are already drenched and the white top she’s wearing is now sheer and damp, showing off the bathing suit top beneath it.

“It’s our rain moment. We have to kiss,” she informs me as if I’m supposed to understand what she’s talking about.

“What are you talking about, sweets? Did lightning strike you?”

“No, Sam. Haven’t you ever watched a romantic comedy? If you are caught in the rain with someone you’re spending time with in a sexual way, then you are by law required to kiss.”

“It’s the law, is it?” I ask with one eyebrow raised. “According to romantic comedy movies?”

“Duh. Now, I know we are temporary. But I’m not sure how often you get stuck in the rain with someone you enjoy being naked with, but this is a first for me. On the chance that it’s the last time, I want my kiss.”

I feel a pain in my chest at the thought of her leaving. When we started it felt like we had all the time in the world to spend wrapped in each other, but with each passing day, I yearn to spend the next with her, but each one is one day closer to fall and her starting the life she deserves to live. Not one trapped in a small town where the man she’s with main focus has to be his handicapped dad.

I do what I need to do to make sure that when she leaves here she leaves forever dreaming of our time together. With the rain pouring down on us I lean over and start by placing a gentle kiss on her lips. Grabbing her ass in my hands, I hoist her up my torso, encouraging her legs to wrap around my body so I can lean her against a nearby tree.

The kiss is instantly hot. I lick the seam of her lips, demanding entry. She doesn’t fight me; my Montana is always open and ready and oh so eager. The thunder is nearing us, but all I can hear are the moans in her throat as her tongue tangles with mine.

Time is moving at a standstill as I kiss her slow, deep, and with the eagerness of someone not ready to let go.

Now Live! The Man Behind The Legend, by Stella

We’re celebrating the release of The Man Behind the Legend by Stella! Check out the cover and excerpt! Don’t forget to one-click today!

Contemporary Romance

Stand Alone

Blurb:

Word of mouth and a notorious reputation kept me flying high yet safely under the radar—a legend whispered between cubicles and stories told at bars.

At the end of the day, people didn’t know my true identity, but I felt good about what I did. I was proud of the number of relationships I’d helped resurrect. I had a skill that every woman needed to possess—and I was damn good at teaching them the ropes.

*Formerly published as Dr. Fellacio.

EXCERPT:

“I gave her your number. Her name’s Candi. My guess is you’ll hear from her today.” When she flipped her hair over her shoulder, the light caught the streaks of perfectly placed caramel and rich-red undertones.

“Jasmine,” I hissed through my teeth, not wanting to draw the attention of my cube mate. “You know I’m really particular about who I take on. Why would you give out my number to some rank stranger?”

“It’s not like Dr. Fellatio is a secret, Alex. All of greater Atlanta is aware of the good doctor’s reputation. The only secret is how to get on her calendar. Stop worrying so much. No one’s going to find out how you moonlight.” Her blasé attitude would have had me in a verbal uproar if we were in different company. As it stood, any further mention of my second job could be heard by any number of people within spitting distance of my not-so-semi-private desk.

“Shh. Someone might hear you.”

She waved me off and tossed her freshly colored locks over her shoulder again. If I weren’t so irritated, I’d admire the myriad of hues streaking her long hair, but at this point, she was just being obnoxious about showing them off. I got it—her hair looked great…moving on.

Jasmine rolled her eyes. “No one here cares what either of us do, much less what we talk about. Anyway, so I met her the last time I went in for a cut. She moved here with her boyfriend…or for her boyfriend from somewhere out west.” She waved her hand, dismissing the detail. “I don’t know. Not the point. Jose left—which is another story in itself—but no one bothered to call me to let me know the salon had booked me with Candi until I got there—”

“Could you get to the point here? I have a ton of step-and-fetch-it work to do for the team that isn’t getting done while you occupy my time.”

“Relax, Alexia, I’m getting there. As you know, color is a process.” The use of my full name only served to further ruffle my feathers, but I ignored it—along with the continued tossing of her hair—hoping she’d answer me.

“Yes, one you take half a day off to have done. Got it.”

“So, I spent the morning lamenting the fact that Jose no longer works there while getting to know his replacement.”

“Jasmine, you have about two-point-five seconds to tell me why you’re passing out my card.”

“Fine. She moved here and ever since…well, her love life has been on the downward slope.”

“As in it’s not any good?”

“As in it’s non-existent, where I got the impression she’d prefer it be rather prolific.”

“I’m not sure how you managed to learn this about a woman you just met.”

“Alex, I spent four hours with the girl. I can tell you her zodiac sign and social security number at this point if that would make you feel better. Give me five minutes, and I’ll check her credit.”

“Hardly—”

“Are you going to let me tell you this or keep interrupting?”

My forehead hit my folded arms on top of my desk in exasperation. “Go on…”

“Thank you.” Her voice pepped up with her tiny victory. “So, she told me all about this guy and their life—well, sex life anyway. And she’s a prime candidate for your services. When I mentioned what you do, her eyes went wide with excitement, and I swear she bounced on her toes.”

“Why, Jasmine?” My gaze met hers as I sat back in my chair. Pounding my skull on the desk wasn’t getting me anywhere. Maybe quiet resignation or plotting my best friend’s demise would.

“Because clearly, neither of us are blazing any trails toward gaining a spot on an ad team here, which means you’re still making the same paltry sum I do. Both of us know that means we’re barely over the poverty line. And this girl needs help and has the money to pay your exorbitant fees.”

“They get their money’s worth.” It wasn’t an opinion. At this point, my reputation stood for itself. Women paid me thousands to school them in the art of pleasuring their partners. They also paid for anonymity—mine and theirs.

“Agreed, which is why I told Candi about Dr. Fellatio. If anyone can help her salvage her sex life, it would be you.”

“What exactly did you tell her?”

“That women from seven states seek your expertise, and you’ve never had a single complaint. I also told her your business grew based on word of mouth—no pun intended. Meaning you had nothing but satisfied customers. Very satisfied customers.” She added in that last part with a lazy smile and even lazier eye. If that was what she looked like after an orgasm…well, that thought didn’t need to be finished. Moving on.

“I have no idea how you manage to work these types of things into a discussion with your hairdresser—”

“Stylist.”

“Whatever.”

“Done is done. She doesn’t know my connection to you or where you work. Hell, she doesn’t even know your name, Alex. So just say thank you, and talk to the girl when she calls.”

Easy for Jasmine to say; she wasn’t the one providing ethically questionable services in the Bible Belt. She also didn’t risk losing the job she’d been at for five years. It didn’t matter that we’d both been misled or that we were after the same coveted spot every college graduate with a marketing degree on the East Coast wanted. The fact was, we both took jobs at Miriam Pratt as junior account representatives when we got our degrees. And we were both still in the same position—although serving different ad teams—hoping to land a promotion and a job that paid a wage we could live on. Regardless of the fact that we were glorified gophers, being employed at what is now Seneca Marketing held clout—even if it held no dollar signs.
