Sunny Shelly’s Review: Just Between Us by Lena Hendrix

Just Between Us by Lena Hendrix is NOW LIVE!

Royal King is pure mischief wrapped in a cocky smirk and a heated stare.

Five minutes in his small town and I knew he was going to be nothing but trouble. He’s an arrogant, tattooed playboy with a secret, and I’m the woman tasked with quietly cleaning up his family’s mess.

I never dreamed he could be the mysterious stranger behind my hidden, late-night messages.

It doesn’t matter what he says or how hard he tries to get under my skin. I won’t break. Not for him. Not for anyone. But when our secrets are exposed, all bets are off.

He knows the rules—just a little fun exploration. Nothing more. But one lesson leads to another . . . and another . . . and soon I realize that he’s set out to break every rule I’ve ever put into place.

I refuse to find myself melting under his gaze or swooning at the way he makes the noise around us quieter.

I can handle men like him.

Everything will be fine as long as we can keep this just between us.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Wow! I was intrigued by Royal King from the first time he showed up in the Sullivan family series… and Lena Hendrix did not disappoint with the dirty-talking, tattooed, golden retriever Dom we got to know in Just Between Us!

Royal and his black cat, Veda, were so well matched. I have to say, I was not expecting *that* kind of meet-cute. And I giggled once the “favor” he’d requested of Lark Sullivan came out. She is icy and sassy, and he is just so kind-hearted and sweet, in complete opposition to the tattooed bad boy persona he presents. Veda arrives in Outtatowner to assist JP in investigating their dad, Russell. Unbeknownst to either Royal or Veda, they already *know* each other thanks to a certain OnlyFans-style app. When their virtual relationship collides with their real lives, it can potentially cause real issues for them both. But instead, it leads to a wonderful relationship where Royal gives by-the-rules Veda some spicy lessons in learning how to relax and enjoy living in the moment.

As strong and focused as Veda is, she has some insecurities about herself. And Royal has some insecurities himself stemming from his mother abandoning him and his siblings. As they get to know each other, Royal and Veda help one another break down the walls they’ve erected around their hearts and give each other a safe space to be vulnerable. The banter between these characters is witty and fun, but there are also plenty of sweet moments between Royal and Veda that I just adored.

The mystery surrounding Russel King and what happened to the kids’ mother comes to light in this book as well, in a very shocking manner. I’m looking forward to seeing what the fallout is from that! After that tease at the end, I can’t wait for JP’s book!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Promise Me by Jami Rogers

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐌𝐞 by Jami Rogers is AVAILABLE NOW!!

Hudson Asher is my brother’s best friend and my number one enemy—I think.

One accident later, and I can’t remember the last three years or the exact reason why my childhood nemesis and I still refuse to hold a civil conversation.

Heck, I didn’t even know he had moved back to our small town of Lovers until I woke up in the hospital and he was the only one sitting next to my bed.

Suddenly, I’m living a life that doesn’t sound like me. My brother is an overprotective babysitter, and I only want to be treated normally.

There’s only one person who doesn’t treat me like broken glass: Hudson.

Appearing on his doorstep one night and inviting myself to stay for a while wasn’t part of his plans, but it turns out the former hockey player whose career ended way too soon might need me in his life just as much as I need him.

We can team up and help each other heal, but what happens when or if my memory comes back? Which version of Hudson will I choose to keep: the one I can’t stand or the one I can’t live without?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I’ve found that the amnesia trope can go either way, but Jami Rogers delivered a top-tier and heartfelt brother’s best friend, enemies-to-lovers story with Promise Me! It was entertaining and engaging, a sweet slow-burn with a grumpy, withdrawn hero who you just can’t help but root for!

After losing the last three years of her life in an accident, Sadie turns to the only person who makes her feel like they don’t expect anything from her: her brother’s best friend, Hudson. A former pro hockey player, Hudson’s life changed in an instant after a career-ending injury, so he has a sense of how lost and unsure Sadie is feeling. Realizing that he can help her in a way that no one else can, Hudson agrees to let her stay with him for a while as she figures out what her next steps are.

But the Hudson and Sadie of today are not the same Hudson and Sadie from a month ago. My favorite part was when Hudson begged Sadie to remember “this version” of them. My heart!

This was a great start to a new series (with some cameo appearances from the Lust or Bust guys) and I am looking forward to getting to know the Asher family better with the rest of this series!

BLURB:

Football has been my life. Not that I ever had a choice in the matter. When your dad is a retired, future Hall-of-Fame quarterback, the gridiron tends to weave its way into your DNA.

I always loved the game, but I could do without the spotlight that comes with being Peyton Johnson, the great Reed Johnson’s daughter. To make matters worse, when my dad retired from the NFL, he decided his second calling was to take over the head coaching gig at my high school, where he has coached my boyfriend for the last three years.

Correction—my ex-boyfriend.

While the fairytale high-school sweetheart story may have worked for my parents, I have other plans. And following a self-absorbed athlete to college is not part of them, no matter how hard my dad tries to push me and my ex together.

Thankfully, a new high school opens and draws a line through the center of our town, sending half of my dad’s players to a new team. And apparently, their new quarterback is breaking all of my dad’s old state records. It’s the ultimate distraction, giving me the chance to land myself a spot on the cheer team at any college that isn’t close to home.

But then I meet him. Wyatt Stone. The guy my dad considers our enemy. The best quarterback I’ve ever seen. A complete jerk who I can’t quit thinking about. And running into. And rooting for.

Now, I’m the one who is distracted. And repeating my parents’ love story doesn’t sound so bad after all.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Wyatt and Peyton’s story was so cute! It’s a small-town, coming-of-age romance set in the world of high school football between a cheerleader and the new star quarterback at the rival school.

Peyton is the daughter of the beloved football coach, captain of the cheer squad, and rhe quarterback’s on-again, off-again girlfriend. Her life is mapped out for her. But during an “off” period with her ex, she crosses paths with Wyatt, a guy new to town. Neither of them know who the other is at first, and there is an instant connection. Once they discover who the other is, it’s impossible fie Wyatt and Peyton to stay away from each other, and she realizes just how wrong her supposedly “perfect” ex was for her.

Peyton’s dad is not happy that her new boyfriend is the quarterback at the rival school — and is even less happy that Wyatt is about to break all the records that Reed has set himself. That adds some tension to the new romance, as does the petty gams between the two teams’ players. Yet through it all, Wyatt and Peyton prove that they can rise above it. Their connection is solid, and I really liked how they leaned on one another.

I’ve read several of Ginger Scott’s books but not the Waiting series, which is the story of Peyton’s parents, Reed and Nolan. I could see where this next-gen romance would be a hit with fans of Waiting.

Kara

I moved to Nashville to follow my dreams of being a country music singer.

Who would have ever thought I’d meet the love of my life at one of my first shows?

His enthusiasm for my music is evident, but when he gets his sister to invite all of her college friends to my next show, my music career isn’t the only thing soaring through the night.

Silas

I always wanted to be a firefighter, but I never knew how much of a toll it would take on my personal life.

Finding the one took a back seat early on, and the thought of having kids was absolutely out of the question. I’ve seen too much heartache, and I would never put myself through the possibility of losing someone I loved.

I’m used to being the hero in everyone else’s story, but I never knew just how much I needed a hero of my own—until I meet her.

Silas is a stand-alone novel in the Station 47 series, shared with seven other amazing authors. It is a surprise-baby, country-music musician, and found-family novel with some sweet, emotional, and spicy times.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I’ve read a few Lauren Runow books and have always enjoyed them. Silas is part of the Station 47 Series, where each book is written by a different author. I love that concept, and Silas works well as a standalone.

Silas is a firefighter/paramedic who meets aspiring country singer Kara at a bar the night she performs for the first time. They hit it off and embark on a whirlwind romance. But just as Kara’s career is about to take off, she learns she is pregnant. And Silas does not want to be a father, his fears stemming from a traumatic experience. Can they find a way to move forward?

Silas and Kara have instant chemistry, and a great connection that carries through the book. This instalove story had some depth, especially with how Silas was able to be in his feelings, show his vulnerability. Can we see more of this from our leading men?

This book also has a great group of secondary characters, especially Myles, who is right there for Silas through all of his troubles.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Never Say Never by Lily Miller

Never Say Never by Lily Miller is available October 8th!

Tucker Collins.
Treasured college football coach by day, Reed Point’s most notorious bachelor by night—and the thorn in my side for the past 10 years.

It wasn’t always that way. Once upon a time, Tucker and I were inseparable. We grew up next door to each other and he was almost like a brother to me. My closest friend. But as we got older, things started to change. Secretly, I loved his cocky grin and the way his blue eyes would lock on mine. I was resigned to lusting after him from afar until one day he kissed me—only to reject me the very next day.

Since then, I’ve tried to keep as much distance between Tucker and I as possible. When we do cross paths, which is more often than I’d like seeing as our parents are best friends, that man still knows exactly how to get under my skin.

Then one night, Tucker corners me on a date and demands to know who the guy is. I tell him it’s just a fling, not that it’s any of his business. The truth is I’m leaving town in a few months, so I’m not looking for anything serious. But when I admit to having certain needs, Tucker comes up with an agreement.

That’s how I end up in a frienemies-with-benefits pact with my childhood best friend. We have a list of rules—no sleeping over, no cuddling and definitely no falling in love. But before long it’s taking everything in me not to break every single one.

Catching feelings for Tucker Collins is a very bad idea. There are a million reasons why I should walk away.

But it’s hard to leave when I’m having so much fun. Tucker is Reed Point’s hottest bachelor. The boy who broke my heart. And my new dirty secret.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Never Say Never is the first book I’ve read by Lily Miller, and I loved Tucker and Daisy’s story!

These two were childhood best friends who were practically raised as brother and sister since they are next-door neighbors and their parents are best friends. They shared a kiss 10 years ago, but Tucker broke Daisy’s heart when he told her the next day that it was a mistake. As it turns out, the mistake was not fighting for what he felt for her! The secret tattoo! That gets me every time!

Their reunion starts out as a secret friends-with-benefits pact with a set expiration date because Daisy is about to leave on a three-month trip. But before they even get to that point, these two have fallen head over heels in love with one another, and faced some judgement over the nature of their childhood friendship. I really liked the friendship Daisy and Tucker fell back into once they reunited, and I loved how vulnerable he was when it came to his father’s disapproval. I thought there was a lot of growth from both characters over the course of this book, but especially from Tucker. He was a swoony book boyfriend, and I loved seeing how he fell hard for Daisy. She’d always been the one for him!

I appreciate a set-in-the-future epilogue, so I was very happy to see where Tucker and Daisy are with their brood of kids eight years in the future. It was a very satisfying HEA for a couple that I very much enjoyed reading about.

Never Say Never is part of the Haven Harbor series, but is a true standalone. Tucker’s neighbors are his closest friends, but I never felt like I was missing pieces of a story being referenced about the other couples. However, I am interested in going back to check out those books now!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I loved the chemistry between Cillian and Ivy from the very start! Neither of them expected to find their soulmate in a one-night stand, but they did. The start of their relationship is very intense and they are all-in with one another right off the bat. But Ivy is keeping a whopper of a secret from Cillian — she’s hidden who she really is, and that she’s actually 14 years younger than him. She had her reasons — namely, her controlling, powerful father — but a relationship built on a lie doesn’t have a strong foundation.

When their world implodes and the inevitable breakup happens, both Cillian and Ivy are crushed. She sinks into depression, and he loses himself to alcoholism. So when they unexpectedly cross paths again three years later, are either of them in place to rekindle their relationship? The love between them never faded, but will that be enough?

I thought that Kaylene Winter did a great job handling some sensitive topics in this story like addiction, familial abuse, and grief. For as much as I liked the instalove, deep connection between Ivy and Cillian, and were rooting for them to get back together and work things out, I did get to a point where I was just skimming the seggsy scenes because there were a lot of them! These two go at it like bunnies! LOL But there is a lot of substance to their story, so it’s not all about the spice.

A spinoff of the Less Than Zero series, the Charming Irish books will follow Connor’s family. I have not read any of the LTZ books; while there were a few minor references to Connor and his wife and bandmates that I didn’t know the complete backstory of, it didn’t take anything away from my enjoying Cillian and Ivy’s story.

Looking forward to seeing more from the McLoughlin boys! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Author: Erin Nicholas writing as
Erin Nicolle
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Tropes: Royal Romance/Single Mom/Small Town
Golden Retriever/He Falls First/He Falls Hard
Release Date: October 2, 2024
BLURB
A small-town single mom like me has no business believing in fairy tales.
But the very handsome, charming, dirty-talking prince (yes, seriously) I met nineteen months ago now has his fine ass and panty-melting grin planted on my front porch.
He’s been searching for me ever since I snuck out after our hot, fantasy-filled weekend together.
And, dammit, that’s a little romantic.
Now that he’s found me, he wants to pick up where we left off.
Because he thinks he’s in love with me.
Oh, and because he needs to get out of the marriage his grandfather, the king, has arranged for him.
Right. Even if I hadn’t lied to him about everything but my first name, the carefree, adventurous woman he burned up the sheets with for three days doesn’t exist.
I’m actually a stressed-out mechanic back in my small hometown, raising a sassy fifteen-year-old daughter, and trying to make amends for my mean girl past.
I just don’t think my grease-streaked work boots scream princess material.
Of course, he won’t take no for an answer.
Shocking, I know.
Instead, he proposes a deal: I give him nineteen days to get to know the real me.
Then he’ll either get over me, go home, and marry someone else.
Or I’ll walk down that aisle.
Rags to Royals is a modern royal romance with a feisty single mom, a golden retriever prince who falls first and hard, and lots of delicious dirty talk and spice on the page. It is the third book in the Royals Gone Rogue series, but can be read as a stand-alone.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars
I have really been enjoying the Royals Gone Rogue series, and thought that Cian and Scarlett’s story was so much fun! Each of these books has captivated me, with all the quirky characters, the king’s arranged marriage plan, the connections between the royal family and those with their bodyguards… it’s all been fantastic, and I was immediately hooked on Rags to Royals! I loved this Cinderella reimagining!

Scarlett has not had an easy life. And she had her reasons for ghosting Cian after they spent an *amazing* weekend together. How swoony is it that he’s been trying to find her for nearly two years? What a Cinderella story! It’s a reverse age-gap, reverse grumpy sunshine story. And yes, the hero is a bona fide prince, but I found these characters so likable and relatable. I especially liked the reverse Mean Girls subplot with Scarlett’s daughter, Mariah, and how that all came full circle with Scarlett’s own bad-girl past.

I am super excited that Henry and Scarlett’s sister, Ruby, are getting their own book next! And I can’t wait for Astrid and Declan’s story!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

Mistletoe Misses is a cute second-chance holiday romance by Alexandra Grace, a new-to-me author. A few years ago, when they were 18, Carmen broke Maddox’s heart by breaking up with him around Christmastime, and he’s pretty much avoided going home ever since. After the military, he went to work for the Boston PD, but now he’s on forced leave from the department and is reluctantly back in his hometown around the holidays… where he runs into the woman who broke his heart.

Thanks to some small-town holiday charm, and a meddling grandmother, Maddox and Carmen face their past and somehow find a way to forge ahead together…

This closed-door romance is rather heartwarming, but I got tripped up over the fact that his parents withheld some kinda important info from him for years. Sure, that plays into the shock of seeing Carmen again, but I couldn’t get past that. I also got held up on the fact that this guy has been in the military, is in law enforcement for one of the biggest cities in the country… and he’s still hung up on his high school sweetheart. I just didn’t *feel* that kind of connection between the characters. Yes, I enjoyed the story, but I just didn’t get that kind of soul-deep feeling from them.

But if you are looking for a small-town holiday romance with Hallmark movie vibes, Mistletoe Misses will be right up your alley! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Love You Always by AJ Alexander

A woman who’s waiting for her love to return home …

A man who doesn’t believe he deserves her.

Love You Always, an all-new brother’s best friend, age-gap, small town romance from USA Today bestselling author AJ Alexander is now available!

I’ve been in love with my brother’s best friend, Brady Thomas, since I was old enough to know what love was.  It didn’t matter that he was older than me or that my brother would disapprove, there was no changing the way that I felt about him.  I planned to keep my feelings a secret, telling myself it was nothing but a silly crush. Then Brady did the unthinkable, he kissed me before leaving without a word.

That one kiss changed everything. Instead of getting the happily ever after I dreamed of,  I spent months waiting for any hint that our  kiss meant something to him. That he felt something, anything close to what I feel for him, but the only thing I got was the silent treatment.

Now, a little over a year later, Brady is back in town stirring up all the feelings I’ve been trying desperately to forget.  The moment our eyes lock across my brother’s bar I feel the walls around my heart begin to crumble. But I refuse to make the same mistake twice.

If Brady wants a chance at my heart, then he’s going to have to fight for it.

      “Who isn’t yours?”

I spin around and lock eyes with Brady. What the hell is he doing out here?

“Is some guy giving you a hard time?” he asks, pulling his arms out of his jacket and draping it over my shoulders. “I can go knock him around a little for you.”

I giggle softly. “No, he’s kind of dense.” I pull the sleeves of his jacket over my hands. “Besides, it’s not his fault. I doubt he even knows I exist.”

How ironic. I wonder how different the conversation would be if he knew that the man who sent me running from the party was him.

“I doubt that.” Brady’s eyes soften as he pulls me into his chest, burying his nose in my curly dark brown hair.

“It’s you,” I whisper as I wrap my arms around his waist, squeezing him tightly and hiding my face in his chest.

“What about me?” He pulls back slightly, tucking a few loose strands of hair behind my ear.

“Nothing. Forget I said anything.” I drop my head and try to pull out of his arms, but his hand tightens along my waist.

Brady grips my chin between his thumb and index finger, lifting it slowly. His forest-green eyes stare down at me, searching for the answer to his question.

“Em, you can tell me.” His eyes swirl with adoration and something else, something that I’ve never noticed before.

It can’t be. There’s no way.

I shake my head to clear my thoughts. “Not this, Brady.”

“Yes, this,” he pleads. “Tell me.”

I close my eyes tightly, unable to deny his request but not knowing how to begin. How do you tell someone that you long to be with them? That they are the air you breathe and the heartbeat deep inside your chest. That you have no idea when it happened, but you can’t bear to spend one more day without letting them know how you feel. How deeply and irrevocably in love you are with them.

I open my mouth to respond but clamp it shut tightly. Panic swells in my chest at the idea of him not feeling the same way for me. Of ruining whatever this tentative friendship is between us. I love Brady. I will always love him, but is it better just to keep things the way they are now? No. I can’t do that. Not now. Not with him leaving with a chance that he’ll never be back. I don’t want to live my life with regrets, wondering how things could’ve been if I had been brave enough to tell him how I felt about him.

“Brady,” I whisper as I rise onto my toes and wrap my arms around his neck before leaning forward. My lips brush against his once before I pull back and gather my courage. “I love you.”

His eyes darken as a low rumble escapes his throat. Then, before I can react, he leans down, crashing his lips into mine. We both groan as Brady nibbles and sucks at my bottom lip before running his tongue along it.

“Emersyn,” he groans as he threads his hand in my hair, gripping the coarse hairs near my scalp tightly and pulling my head back to get a better angle, possessing me in a way I never imagined was possible.

Every nerve ending in my body sizzles with anticipation as his hands slide down my body, cupping my ass. I want to give him everything in this moment—everything that I am now, everything that already belongs to him.

We break apart, gasping for air, and he pulls me closer to him and nibbles down my neck.

“I’ve dreamed of this for years,” he whispers against the soft skin of my neck before brushing his lips softly against mine. “But I never believed…”

“What in the fuck is going on out here?” Beckett bellows as he slams the back door shut hard behind him. “I come out here to check on my baby sister, and I find my best friend molesting her!”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

Emersyn has always had a crush on Brady, her older brother’s best friend. There is a wide age gap between them (15 years), but eventually, Brady stopped looking at her like a little sister and began appreciating her for the young woman she was becoming. But because she was his best friend’s little sister, Emersyn was hands-off. Plus, he’d always felt like he wasn’t worthy of her affection. But now that he’s retired from the military and back home, Brady has decided he is all in to winning her heart.

I felt like I was dropped into Love You Always in the middle of a story. There were a lot of pieces that I’m guessing happened in other books by AJ Alexander, because I felt like I was missing background points and the relationships between some of the characters. Love You Always is an interconnected standalone, but I really think in this case that having read the other books would have helped.

That said, I was still rooting for this couple to get together. At times, I thought that Emersyn, at 22, presented more mature than Brady did at 37. He kind of screws things up with her over and over again, and I was starting to get whiplash. I thought that the concept of this story had a lot of potential, but the execution could have been better. There was a lot of telling happening (and A LOT of inner dialogue from the main characters that seemed like… filler?) but not much in the way of showing. The repetitive back and forth between Emersyn and Brady dragged on until the last 15% of the book, and I would have liked to have seen more interaction between the characters. Definitely more of them as a couple.

Overall, I was just hoping for a little more out of this story. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

After losing his wife and infant son, Dallas Montana has been living a secluded life in a remote cabin away from, well… everything.

He never anticipated having guests.

More importantly, the cabin only has one bed.

But everything changes during the blizzard.

His entire world pivots when he meets her.

Leaving Martina Carver out in the cold goes against his protective nature. Even if it makes him face his deepest darkest fears.

But once the snow melts and realization sets in—that Marti comes as a package deal—loving her may not be worth the price it would take to conquer his demons.

Sometimes, though, it takes one broken person to fix another.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh. My. Goodness. I’ve read all of Samantha Christy’s books set in the Calloway Creek world, so I was quite familiar with the tragedy that took the lives of Dallas Montana’s wife and infant son. And I was so excited when SC announced that the Montana siblings would be a series because I was *really* looking forward to seeing Dallas fall in love again.

I knew it was going to be a rough story. I knew it was going to be emotional. I knew that this sad, mourning, recluse of a man was going to have to make some major strides to overcome the fear and grief that had him paralyzed in place and living as a recluse in a secluded mountain cabin. And Loud Unspoken Memories was PERFECT in every way! Marti complemented Dallas so well!

The tears I cried while reading this book were worth it! I was a sobbing mess, but seeing Dallas come out on the other side of his grief and creating a new life with Marti — who has lost almost as much as he had — was worth the wet pillow!

*Chef’s Kiss* In this beautiful story, SC explores the nuanced layers of grief, hope, resilience, healing, and so much more!

Next up is Blake, Calloway Creek’s own runaway groom. And I really hope that there is a book coming for Allie and Marti’s brother, Asher!
