Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

After Gianna’s boyfriend cheats on her, she moves into her brother’s apartment since he is rarely there and finds herself roommates with his best friend, Emerson. Emerson has always had a crush on Gianna, and he takes the opportunity handed to him to be her support system. Gianna is hesitant to trust him because she’s been burned in the past, but Emerson is a total golden retriever and proves other just how beautiful and worthy she is.

This couple had great banter and sizzling chemistry, but I also really liked the softer side of them. Especially the vulnerable side of Emerson. He is a swoony book boyfriend, and despite trying to lift Gianna’s self-worth, he’s kind of down on himself a lot of the time and is quite insecure. They complemented each other well, and I was really rooting for them.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: One String by Aleatha Romig

ONE STRING

Release Date: July 4

Second-chance, enemies-to-lovers, fake-date, little-sister’s-best-friend, forbidden, stand-alone contemporary romance.

Ricky Dunn is the equivalent to a splinter under my fingernail.

Romantic?

Right.

He’s the older brother of my best friend, and no matter how hard either of us try, we can’t seem to avoid each other. The problem started on the night my best friend and I graduated from high school. The party was joyous, a celebration.

That night, I willingly gave Ricky a part of me—more than the kiss we told others about.

Our deal was simple.

No strings.

Ricky kept his side of the bargain.

Years have passed.

Being from the same small town and crossing paths, I haven’t noticed how handsome he’s become or the way he’s filled out.

If you ask me, he hasn’t noticed me either.

Until he calls.

I’m working for a finance company, one he’s now interviewing for.

“Marilyn, will you be my date for the dinner with the partners? It’s only for one date and no strings.”

The problem is my heart hasn’t kept my side of our bargain.

I want at least one string.

Do I agree to his proposal, or do I turn him down flat?

Have you been Aleatha’d?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

It’s been a really long time since I’ve read anything by Aleatha Romig, and I really enjoyed Ricky and Marilyn’s story in One String.

Years ago, when Marilyn and her best friend Devan graduated high school, she slept with Devan’s older brother, Ricky, whom she always had a crush on. There is a 10-year age difference between Marilyn and Ricky, and it seemed so huge when she was 18 and he was 28. They agreed to one night with no strings… but Marilyn still had her feelings hurt when Ricky ghosted her afterwards. In the years since, she’s given him snarky attitude when she’s seen him. The book starts at Devan’s wedding, where Marilyn is the maid of honor and Ricky is the best man. They put aside their differences for the night, and come to a truce of sorts.

A year and a half later, Ricky (who has since gone on to college as a later-in-life student) is up for a job at Marilyn’s firm and asks her to be his plus-one at a recruiting dinner. She reluctantly agrees, and during a catch-up dinner with Ricky before the dinner party, she finds out that she actually quite enjoys spending time with him. A stupid mistake from Ricky’s past derails their renewed friendship, but he does some major groveling and Marilyn agrees to give him yet another chance.

But just as Marilyn and Ricky are finding their footing as a couple, another tragedy threatens to tear them apart again.

I liked the connection between these two characters, and the larger group of family and friends surrounding them. I thought the journey of Marilyn and Ricky’s relationship was well-paced, and he did prove himself in the end after making numerous mistakes when it came to breaking her trust.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The One I Stood Beside by Piper Rayne

The One I Stood Beside by Piper Rayne is now live!

It’s the classic story—best friends since childhood agree to a fake marriage, thinking they can pretend to love each other without their relationship changing.

Jude would do anything for me. He’s stood by my side since we were six, and I’ve done the same for him.

When my father dies, leaving our family farm drowning in debt and on the brink of being auctioned, I’m not surprised Jude steps in to help. I just never dreamed he’d fall to bended knee and devise a plan for us to fool everyone into thinking there’s more than a lifelong friendship between us.

Soon, I’m moving into his house, we’re planning a wedding on his family’s ranch, and we discover a new side to our relationship. I keep reminding myself it’s not real—it’s only to secure a loan to save the farm.

I’ve secretly loved Jude all my life, and now that I know how good we are together, I’m not sure we can return to being just friends.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

When I read The One I Left Behind, I was itching for Sadie and Jude’s story. And despite a few things I shook my head over, Piper Rayne delivered a satisfying best friends/secretly-in-love-with-each-other/fake marriage romance in The One I Stood Beside.

To help Sadie save her family farm, Jude offers to marry his best friend. Except that he’s been in love with her forever, and she’s been in love with him forever, and they both really wish their marriage was the real deal. I was glad that Sadie and Jude ‘fessed up to their real feelings for one another shortly after their fake wedding and it wasn’t dragged out. Because I was already shipping these two characters hard, and I wanted to see how they acted as a couple.

But I kind of got tripped up on the fact that these two characters are in their 30s and never told each other how they feel. There were so many missed opportunities. Both of them have some hangups, and I feel like we really got a look into Jude’s head and how he always compared himself to his successful pro-athlete brother, Ben. Therefore, always feeling that he was never good enough. I just wished there weren’t so many missed opportunities between Jude and Sadie, because I really loved how well they complemented one another.

Troy Duran and Rose Dioro did a great job with the duet narration in telling Sadie and Jude’s story, and I look forward to more from the Naughton family!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Hold Me Until Morning by A.L. Jackson

Hold Me Until Morning by A.L. Jackson is now live!

I should have known I’d be playing with fire when I found the sexy as hell woman moving in next door…

It was pouring rain, so I figured the neighborly thing to do would be to lend a hand.

I nearly dropped to my knees when I realized who she was.

Hailey Wagner.

It’s been six years since I’ve seen her, and she’s always been the one person on earth who is off limits.

My past sins I’ve kept like an ugly secret made sure of that.

Too bad this single mom with the soulful eyes still makes my pulse speed the way it did back then, and I soon find our chemistry is just as strong.

When I find her ex threatening her, I insist on staying with Hailey and her little girl until I’m sure they’re safe.

I thought I could handle being under her roof. Only the tension between us strains, and with one forbidden kiss, all restraint is lost. We collide in a lightning bolt of greed, the two of us locked behind her door night after night.

Falling so hard I know there will be no coming back from it.

But being with Hailey exposes the past I’ve been trying to hide, and I’ll do anything to protect her from it. Because if I don’t? We’re both going to pay the consequences…

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Hold Me Until Morning was a great wrap-up to the Time River series. It’s not a second-chance romance in the traditional sense since Cody and Hailey never technically dated, but there were strong feelings between them that grew that summer six years ago, and that spark is still there today, as strong as ever!

Recently separated from her husband, Hailey moves back to the area after several years away, living with her young daughter Maddie and grandmother Lolly in the house next door to Cody. As it turns out, Cody is also the landscaper working on a big project at the horse ranch where Hailey recently got a new job. Although they try to keep out of each other’s way, they are drawn to one another like magnets.

But Cody is keeping a huge secret from Hailey from what went down that summer six years ago, and Hailey has a possessive ex who is determined to not let her go so easily. Will their pasts ruin any chance they have a present and future? I loved the twists and turns that this story took, and it was a joy to listen to narrators Stephen Dexter and Erin Mallon as Cody and Hailey.

Grandma Lolly was a hoot, and I adored the sweet relationship that Maddie and Cody developed. I especially loved that AL Jackson gave an extended bonus scene from the perspective of all four guys, so we got to see where Caleb, Ryder, Ezra and Cody are a few years in the future with their loves. Well done!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: All For You by Renee Harless

ALL FOR YOU by Renee Harless is NOW LIVE

Why you need to #ONECLICK this book…

🔥Childhood rivals-to-lovers

🔥Jilted Groom

🔥Sports/Baseball

🔥Fake Dating

🔥Virgin Heroine

🔥He Falls First

🔥Small Town

Blurb:

Taking over the family farm in our small town was the only future I knew. But the never ending work left me with no social life and my virginity intact. Until my childhood rival graced us with his presence and was convinced he could help me with my…problem.

Owen Ramsey was an elite professional baseball player that left Ashfield without a backward glance. But when he was left at the altar, he sought refuge back in our town. I hated how he could simultaneously make my heart race and my hands fist. And I really despised how good he looked in a pair of baseball pants.

He needed my help just as much as I needed his. If I agreed to fake date him, he would help me snag the man I had my eye on and I would help convince his ex that he wasn’t heartbroken.

But with his return to baseball looming, we realized maybe the hate we felt was really something more like love.

The fear of disappointing my family was too great, even though I craved something different for the first time ever. Owen was used to hitting balls out of the park, but I wasn’t sure I was meant to be his home run.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

All For You was the perfect book to binge on a rainy Sunday. This enemies-to-lovers, small-town, fake relationship romance between pro baseball player Owen and farmer Aspen was a perfect escape on a dreary day.

It’s been years since Owen has been home to Ashfield. The town may be idyllic, but it holds nothing but bad memories for the pro baseball player. But when he catches his wife cheating just moments before their wedding ceremony, he heads home to Tennessee to lay low for a while… and immediately resumes his bickering with his old rival, Aspen. While he’s in town, Owen comes up with a proposal that they should fake date so his ex-fiancee will stop calling him and Aspen gets the relationship experience she’s looking for so she feels more confident around her crush.

While I wish some conversations had been shown, not told (like Owen talking to Aspen after learning that his mom had sold his family’s land), I thought this story was very well done. Both characters were developed nicely, and I really felt that I got to see them fall for one another as they “fake-dated” while he was in town.

Owen and Aspen have sizzling chemistry, and their spicy lessons are sizzling hot. But there is also a very sweet side to Owen, and he takes care of Aspen in a way that nobody else ever has. As the youngest in her family, she’s often been pushed aside by her siblings, and the responsibilities of the family farm have fallen on her, leaving little room for Aspen to have any kind of personal life. I loved how she helped Owen deal with the demons of his traumatic past, and he helped her realize that it is okay to want more for herself than what she’s responsible for around the farm.

All For You was chock full of emotions, and a satisfying small-town romance! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

The Sinner is Book #3 in the Spade Hotel series by Marni Mann, and I loved Brady and Lily’s story. I’m a sucker for a good story where a playboy falls head over heels for a woman for the first time in his life, and that was executed brilliantly in The Sinner.

Lily has a bit of a traumatic past; she’d lost both her parents, and prefers to spend as much time as she can working as a flight attendant because she feels less lonely when she’s in the air. Oh yeah, and she comes to this situation with a stalker ex! I loved seeing Brady in protector mode, and I really felt Lily’s concern in getting involved with Brady to begin with, and exposing him to her dangerous ex.

The chemistry between these two characters was sizzling, and the suspense element of the story was intriguing. Marni did a great job in writing the romantic side of their relationship as well as the danger elements.

I look forward to seeing the Cole brothers find their partners as this series continues! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

About SO THIS IS WAR (Coming 6/25/2024):

Did I think I was going to fall for my coach’s daughter?

The answer would be no.

I’m still unclear on how I got into this predicament in the first place. A year ago, I was a man with one thought on his mind, the redhead I met at a hotel bar. Twelve months later, I found her.

Unfortunately for me, she not only happens to be my very off-limits coach’s daughter, but also . . . my new assistant and roommate.

I don’t even need an assistant, but Coach Wood doesn’t take no for an answer. Add in him writing up tasks for his daughter, Wylie, to complete for me? Well, it’s his own form of sweet torture. We are talking tasks that I would never ask her to do.

Tasks that make her despise me.

Hate me.

That make her utter four words that cause a shiver to crawl up my spine . . . Posey, this is war.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Bologna Sandwiches

Oh my goodness. This has to be one of the funniest and sexiest books Meghan Quinn has ever presented to the world. I don’t know where she comes up with this stuff but So This Is War is pure gold! We have gotten to know bologna-loving Levi throughout this series and all of its donkeys and apples (Oy! IYKYK). But nothing prepared me for how much I would fall in love with Levi Posey as he falls in love with his coach’s daughter, Wylie!

What made the simmering tension between Wylie and Levi even more delicious was that they met a year earlier, and he’s been trying to find her ever since. He had no idea that his dream girl was his coach’s daughter. And now that he knows, and he’s been blackmailed by his coach to have Wylie be his personal assistant, she is strictly off limits. Yeah… that only lasts for so long.

Actually, it does last a really long time. Because this story is one heck of a slow burn. Meghan really sets up the frustration and tension and desire and lust between these two characters, and it is PERFECTLY narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Emma Wilder. Listening to Teddy sing the woodland creatures diddy was hilarious… and Oh My Gosh, when Teddy-as-Posey gets going with the spicy stuff, it is not to be missed. The audio also has a full cast of characters with returns from the other Agitators (Jason Clarke, Connor Crais, Vanessa Edwin, JF Harding, Stella Hunter, Erin Mallon & Kelsey Navarro Foster), which was just *chef’s kiss*

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Lovely Return by Carian Cole

What if love can transcend time and death?

When I was three years old, I started drawing a house with a red door. Next to the house I drew a happy family—a husband, a wife, a baby, and their dog. For years I cried every night, clutching the drawings, begging my mother to take me home to my real family.

I was labeled odd—a talented child with an overactive imagination.

But one day I wandered straight to that house with the red door, and I found the man and the dog I had been drawing.

Alex Fox was quiet. A sexy, brooding artist. A recluse hiding behind an eye patch and shaggy hair. A grieving widower, suspended in time, never moving forward. Waiting for his love to return.

As I grew up we developed an unlikely but easy friendship, bonding over our mutual love of art. He felt familiar, his home felt like home. But as the years passed I found it harder and harder to ignore not only my growing feelings for him, but the odd visions that played through my mind every time I got too close to him, or spent time in his house.

Or more accurately, when I touched his late wife’s things. Like her wedding gown. And her husband’s lips.

Dreams, reality, and sanity began to blur until I came to a startling revelation. I wasn’t having visions, and I wasn’t delusional. I was having memories. Alex’s late wife’s memories, to be exact.

Alex fights our undeniable connection, believing I’m off limits and too young for him. He tries desperately to do what’s right—pushing away the one and only thing he’s been wishing for since that tragic day when he lost everything. Or so he thinks.

He was mine, once upon a time, in a prior life.
And I’m going to make him mine again.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Lovely Return is the kind of gripping emotional story that will stay with you long after that beautiful epilogue. The story of Alex Fox and Penny Rose is unconventional, but so hauntingly beautiful. There were so many twists and turns in the story, and Carian Cole did a brilliant job of crafting this epic, heartbreaking romance.

As the story unfolds over 20+ years, these characters go through so much on their way to their happily ever after. The day that his wife went into labor was a life-changing moment for Alex Fox, but not in the way he expected it to be. He was consumed by grief and depression, and lived in the shadows until a little girl named Penny Rose entered his life six years later. The connection between them was clear from the start, and a lovely friendship grew between the artist and his student, even though they both felt that their relationship had a more profound meaning.

There are so many ups and downs in Alex and Penny’s story. On top of the forbidden romance between these two characters, Carian Cole explores grief, forgiveness, recovery, mental health, and reincarnation in telling this lovely tale of a lovely return.

This story is one that will stick with me for a long, long, time, and I’m sure it will have a spot on my “reread often” shelf.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Wow, I think Nero may be my favorite Voss brother so far! I don’t know what it was about the youngest brother and his stalker tendencies, but I loved Nero and Cinder’s romance in this Cinderella reimagining.

I really enjoyed the connection between these two, and it was evident on the page right from their initial meeting at a masquerade ball. When Nero’s relationship with Cinder’s stepsister Maude falls apart, he fixates on the mysterious dancer at the local strip club, having no clue who she actually is. Nero swoops in like a gothic knight in expensive-suit-armour to rescue Cinder on the night that she finally decides she’s had enough of her stepmother’s tormenting. Both of these characters grow a lot during the time they spend together. Cinder realizes that she’s stronger than she thinks she is as she imagines a future for herself completely free of the shackles she’d been living in. And Nero ends up softening some of his edges, imagining a future life with a woman by his side for the first time ever. However, both of them are holding on to some secrets, which just may tear apart any happily ever after for Nero and his Princess.

I thought that Midnight Whispers was a great addition to the Midnight Manor series! I am looking forward to seeing how this series comes to an end with Sid’s book!

She’s a sunny, sassy photographer.

Jolie Prescott has always been in love with love. She spent most of her life walking around with hearts in her eyes and immediately jumped at the chance to start a wedding planning company with her two best friends. So when her own fiancé called off their wedding and immediately started dating someone else, it was a major blow she never saw coming. The gossip about it finally starts to die down in her small town. Then her ex announced he’s engaged again. And his new fiancée just happens to be Jolie’s worst enemy. Which makes it really inconvenient that she can’t seem to stop thinking inappropriate thoughts about that woman’s moody half-brother.

He is the ultimate grump.

Vaughn Cavanagh never thought he’d set foot back in Pembrooke, Wyoming after moving away when he was thirteen, but when his father gets sick, he uproots his life to try to repair their frayed relationship. The only thing standing in his way is his spoiled brat half-sister, her determination to throw the ultimate wedding, and her beef with a certain wedding photographer he can’t get out of his head.

When one impulsive act leads to Vaughn announcing he and Jolie are dating, the two have no choice but to fake their relationship to save face. But when feelings enter the picture and lines start to blur, Vaughn has to decide if he’s willing to give up his quiet, solitary life and stay in Pembrooke for a woman he never intended to fall for, or if he’s going to risk losing everything because he’s too afraid to take that leap.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

This book was so good! I love when a grumpy hero who doesn’t believe in love falls hard and fast, and that is exactly what happened with Vaughan when it came to Jolie. While he is a brilliant businessman, he is so emotionally stunted and just didn’t know how to handle the situation with his sick father or the feelings he has for Jolie. Vaughan showed so much growth over the course of this story, and I loved seeing the man he became thanks to Jolie’s influence.

I thought these two characters had a connection from the moment her cat attacked him, and the banter between Calamity Jane and City Slicker was hilarious.

I have read A LOT of Jessica Prince’s books, but not the Pembrooke series, so this quaint little town was new to me. But I loved that Jolie is Dalton’s sister from the Hope Valley series; I so enjoyed the cameos from Dalton and Charlotte! I am looking forward to Ryan and Tarryn’s books (hopefully!) in the future!
