Sunny Shelly’s Review: Second Best, by Noelle Adams

unnamed.jpg

Title: Second Best
Author: Noelle Adams
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: November 15, 2017
Blurb
We meet every other Wednesday night in a
downtown hotel. No dates. No commitments. No hearts and flowers. Just his body
and mine.
Maybe I’m his second best. He’s definitely
mine.
But second best has never felt so good.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I often find the friends-with-benefits trope to be hit or miss; there’s a delicate balance to making the romance that develops feel real to the reader and not forced just because it should be there as a side effect of the couple being no-strings-attached friends with benefits. But Noelle Adams definitely put together a hit with Second Best.

Sean and Ashley go into their “contract” fully aware of what to expect from the other. They each have their reasons for not wanting to date around, so the “I’ll rub your back if you rub mine” deal that they strike up fits both their needs. Until it doesn’t any more.

I was so cheering for these two to get together. Their connection jumps off the page, and they are such richly, fully developed, relatable characters, which made me ship them even more. I am keeping Second Best on my re-read list!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt
After I
turned the water on to get hot, I pulled my hair back into a messy bun and
dropped my clothes onto the floor, feeling almost decadent—like I wasn’t just a
normal girl with a normal job living a normal life. I loved the specialty bath
wash the hotel provided—deliciously scented with lavender and honey—and I
scrubbed up and rinsed off at a leisurely pace.
I wondered
what Sean was doing.
He probably
had a meeting run late or else something urgent came up at work.
I was going
to be very disappointed if the front desk called up to tell me he wasn’t going
to be able to make it after all.
I’d been
waiting for two weeks for tonight. I didn’t want to miss out.
When I felt
an unexpected blast of cool air, I turned to see what caused it. I squealed
loudly when I saw a man getting into the shower with me. I raised my hands
instinctively to beat him off.
You
understand I wasn’t thinking through any of this. All I’d processed was the
sudden appearance of a man where I hadn’t been expecting one.
“Hey,” Sean
said, laughing as he grabbed at my flailing wrists. He was as naked as I was.
“I expected a warmer welcome than this.”
I relaxed
immediately, flushing with embarrassment and the aftermath of my shock. “You
scared the crap out of me!”
He was
still laughing. “I can see that. Who did you think was getting into the shower
with you?”
“I don’t
know. I thought you were running late.”
He moved so
he was completely under the shower spray, the water soaking his short brown
hair and streaming down his high cheekbones, strong chin, and sexy mouth. “I
was. But I rushed over so you wouldn’t start without me.”
“Start…
without…?”
I didn’t
finish the stilted question because he’d pulled me into a kiss.
I had no
objections to kissing him. In fact, it was one of my favorite activities. No
one kissed like Sean Doyle did—with those clever lips, agile tongue, and
dedicated skill. But I’d put my hair into the bun on purpose, and I didn’t want
him to pull my head under the water, so I backed away, saving my hair from
getting soaked like his.
He frowned
when I broke the kiss and reached for me again. “Why are you all standoffish?”
“I’m not.”
I giggled as I evaded his hands. “I just don’t want my hair to get wet.”
“Why not?”
I stared at
him through the steam-thickened air. “Why not? Do you have any idea what it’s
like to go around with wet hair as long as mine? It takes forever to dry and it
gets everything wet.”
He frowned
and stepped forward, pushing me back against the shower wall. “Fine. If you
insist on focusing on practicalities, how’s this then?” He kissed me again, and
this time I didn’t have any desire to pull away. My head was safely away from
the fall of water.
“Not bad,”
I murmured against his lips.
“Not bad?
That’s all you can say after two weeks without kissing me?”
“What did
you expect me to say? That your kiss is the most incredible thing I’ve ever
experienced in the universe.”
He nuzzled the
side of my face, his tongue darting out to taste my skin in little, unexpected
licks, each one causing a quick jolt of pleasure. “That wouldn’t be a bad
start.”

Behind the Bars by Brittainy C. Cherry

Release Date: December 7th, 2017
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Cover Designer: Kandi Steiner

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.

I was the awkward musician, and she was the high school queen.

The only things we had in common were our music and our loneliness.

Something in her eyes told me her smile wasn’t always the truth.

Something in her voice gave me a hope I always wished to find.

And in a flash, she was gone.

Years later, she was standing in front of me on a street in New Orleans.

She was different, but so was I. Life made us colder. Harder. Isolated.

Caged.

Even though we were different, the broken pieces of me recognized the sadness in her.

Now she was back, and I wouldn’t make the mistake of letting her go again.

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.

When we met again, she was the darkest storm.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Spider, by Ilsa Madden-Mills

SBPRBanner-Spider-RB.jpg

From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills comes a new standalone romance about a flawed hero and the woman he can’t forget.

Spider, a sexy and forbidden new standalone, is LIVE!

SPIDER-FINAL-FULL.jpg

Title: Spider
Author: Ilsa Madden-Mills
Publication Date: November 13th, 2017

He calls himself Spider.

I just know him as the sinfully gorgeous guy with eyes of fire that fate places next to me on the airplane.

I didn’t who he really was . . . future rock star . . . my stepbrother.

He kissed me because he thought he’d never see me again. He would.

Everyone warned me about him.

They told me he was careless and ruthless and screwed up.

They said he’d leave me with a hole in my heart.

Maybe I should have listened.

Maybe I should have built a fortress to keep him out.

But I crumbled instead.

They say an unbreakable thread connects those who are destined to meet. If that’s true, then the moment he sat next to me, we were bound together forever.

He just had to figure it out before it’s too late…

Spider-AvailableNow-99.jpg

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Rose & Spider Stars

An epic romance! I love a broken hero, and stepbrother romances are a favorite trope of mine. IMM beautifully combines them in an emotional, angsty tale of first love, soulmates and forever.

The prologue gave me chills, and I couldn’t imagine how that connection would come into play in the heart of the book, but I should have known better than to even wonder, because IMM sets up the perfect first meeting with 11 yr old Rose and the mysterious boy who flirted into her life like a butterfly.

In several other IMM books, Spider is a cocky, womanizing secondary character, but when the reader gets into just how broken this man actually is, my heart was broken wide open for him! He is a hot mess, to put it lightly, and walks away from the one good thing in his life because he knows Tode deserves someone with their act together.

Well, once he had his act together, Spider is out to get his girl back and does it in an epically majestic way. The ups and downs that these two go through serve the story’s purpose of how lost he truly feels until he figures out his ish; the rollercoaster ride is full af angst, but all of that plays into the bigger picture of their epic love.

Spider and his rose tattoos gave me all the feels. You won’t be disappointed!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Unexpected Arrivals, by Stephie Walls

Title: Unexpected Arrivals
Author: Stephie Walls
Genre: Coming of Age/Contemporary Romance
Release Date: November 20, 2017
Blurb
It had to
be a joke.
Any minute
now, a van would drive up and Ashton Kutcher would slide the door open,
laughing hysterically at my melodramatic performance on the front porch.
But nothing
happened.
The words
on the page jumbled into a toxic mess my brain refused to comprehend, much less
accept.
Please consider this letter as a formal request
to arrange a paternity test (DNA).
I barely
remembered Chelsea Airy.
That wasn’t
true—we’d gone out once, and we’d been friends for a while after. But I hadn’t
heard so much as a peep from her since I’d gotten married. I’d reached out a
handful of times, but she’d quit responding and fell off the face of the earth.
There hadn’t been a text, an email, a phone call, not even a Facebook message,
much less a stork in the last five years.
My wife
could forgive a lot, but she’d never wanted children—much less another woman’s.
bd0e7-unexpected2barrivals2bteaser2b1.png

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Unexpected Arrivals was an amazing non-traditional love triangle book. The myriad of connections that Stephie Walls created amongst these characters was spectacular.

The way Walls described James and Cora’s relationship from the moment they met through all of their ups and downs, their split and their reconciliation really made me root for them as a couple. And yet, I still appreciated James’ friendship with Chelsea during the years that he and Cora were apart.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to like the three POVs, but it worked so much better than I ever could have anticipated. I wasn’t sure how Cora was going to react when James learned that he’d fathered a child, but the way these two handled Legend’s sudden appearance in their life was true teamwork. And how that little boy allowed Cora to heal her own fractured past relationships left me in tears.

And I loved, loved, loved the wink to Jade and Aria from another recently-released book, The Roommate ‘dis’Agreement by Walls’ sometime-writing partner, Leddy Harper. I hope that means that we’ll see a romance between Legend and Aria some day!

Love on the Edge of Time, an all-new stand-alone story about a love too great to be bound by time, from Julie A. Richman is available NOW!

LOTEOT_Print_Web

Love on the Edge of Time by Julie A. Richman

Publishing Date: November 13th, 2017

He likes whiskey and wild women

She likes Ben & Jerry’s

He’s about to get kicked out of his own band

She ate her way off the Miss America pageant circuit

What could these two possibly have in common?

A psychiatrist

A lot of unresolved issues

A whole bunch of shared lifetimes

And a love that is never-ending

As bad boy rocker, Jesse Winslow, and former pageant queen, Kylie Martin, each fight the demons screwing up their lives, the one person who holds the key to healing their ills and reuniting two souls that have searched for one another, lifetime after lifetime, is the only one who knows the whole truth.

And keeping that truth from them may just be in preeminent psychiatrist Dr. Claire Stoddard’s best interests.

Claire has committed the ultimate sin in the medical world. She’s fallen for the one man she’s forbidden to love.

Her patient, Jesse Winslow.

And she’s not about to lose him to Kylie Martin… Again.

Excerpt:

This time he didn’t text. He just called, waking her at two-fifteen a.m.

“Bare-ly dressed again tonight?”

Her laugh, filled with sleep was gruff. “Barely dressed every night.”

“What exactly do you have on?”

“A pink tank top and pink silk bikini.”

“Take them off,” he ordered.

“Excuse me,” there was an element of surprise in Kylie’s voice.

“You heard me. Take them off. Now.” Just hearing rustling on the other end of the line, he could feel his cock stiffen and it felt damn good after all this time. Baby, I’m back, he thought.

“We’re having phone sex? But, Jesse, we haven’t even kissed yet,” her protest was weak. And even she knew it.

“Yes, we’re having phone sex, and when I get back to New York, we’re going to do a lot more than kiss. You’ve friend-zoned me, Toots, and I’m busting out.”

Kylie was smiling on her end of the phone. Friend-zoned Jesse Fucking Winslow? Was he serious? “Nobody puts Jesse in a friend-zone,” she couldn’t help herself.

“Are they off?” He totally ignored her joke.

“Mmm-hmm.”

“What was that?” he asked, his voice gruff and serious.

“Yes, they’re off.”

“Okay, spread your legs, and with your phone, take a picture of your pussy for me.”

“Seriously?” She knew she was blushing in the dark.

“Take the picture, Kylie.”

“Okay, but if you sell this to the paparazzi, I will kill you.” There was a rustling sound, then, “Oh, my God, I can’t believe I’m doing this.”

He laughed.

“Okay, here it comes. I hope it’s photogenic. It would be really embarrassing to have a non-photogenic pussy.”

Pulling the phone from his ear to look, Kylie could hear his moan, exciting her even more.

“So photogenic, Toots, just like the rest of you. And I love the red landing strip. It’s so hot. Oh, man, I love this. Spread your legs wider and use one hand to spread your lips open for me and send me another.”

Following his directions, she did as he requested.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Roommate ‘dis’Agreement by Leddy Harper

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

The Leddy Harper books I’ve previously read are full of angst, full of emotional drama and full of rip-your-heart out moments. So the blurb for The Roommate ‘dis’Agreement intrigued me, because it didn’t sound like any of her other work that I’m familiar with. I was expecting something light-hearted and funny, a romantic comedy… but that isn’t quite how I’d describe The Roommate ‘dis’Agreement.

Divorced, lonely Cash puts out an ad for a female roommate, simply because he’s looking for company. Nothing more. His job is high-stress and leaves him craving companionship. Jade is a single mother with nowhere else to go and at first responds to the ad as way to mess with Cash. But an honest friendship develops between them as they get to know each other on the phone first — and I was so happy that Harper wrote it that way. Because it’s weird enough for a single mom to move, with her toddler, into a stranger’s house three hours away from her only friend. But at least the reader got to see the relationship begin to develop between Cash and Jade.

The Roommate DisAgreement Teaser 2.png
But because this is a friends-t0-lovers story, Cash and Jade fall in love, despite what their clearly-outlined “roommate agreement” states. There are a few twists and turns in the story that I never anticipated going in, but they served to further position Cash as the protector, the rescuer, the savior that Jade hadn’t had in her life in quite some time.

Like I said, I was expecting more of a romcom based on the book description, but that’s not the way I’d describe it. There are a few funny moments between Jade and Cash, and their ups and downs on their way to HEA with sweet little Aria is a road well traveled.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

I’ve been in love with him forever.

But to him, I’ve always been off-limits. Until the night that changed everything.

Maybe it was the alcohol. Maybe it was the secrets we shared. Maybe he finally opened his eyes and saw me.

By the time the sun rose, I’d lost him again, my heart shattering on his parting words: “It was a mistake.” So I ran. Ran until I was thousands of miles away, in a country I didn’t know, surrounded by people who only made me miss him more.

I never expected him to follow me … or to pry more secrets from my soul. In exchange, he gave me more of his secrets too.

How was I to know it was the secrets we didn’t share, the words we didn’t dare utter, that would tear us apart?
