Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Right Direction, by Kathy Coopmans

BLURB

From USA Today Best- Selling Author comes book one in The Sweet Sin Series.

Meet the men of the rock band, Trained in Black.

“Our someday will come soon, Joslyn.” Those words were the last words I heard from Roman Nixon before I walked away.
I knew our someday might come, but not the one he and I had always dreamed about.

His life headed in one direction, mine in the other. While Roman became the lead singer for the successful rock band Trained in Black, I became a ruthless attorney.
He moved on and married someone else. As I was forced to observe him and his bride on the cover of every magazine out there, I deserved to suffer because of what I had done.
What I didn’t expect was a phone call that led to me becoming his new attorney.

After years apart, our opposite worlds collide. This time, we may get our someday. But first, we have to find a way to steer us in the right direction.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

The Right Direction is the first book in the Sweet Sins series, and it is a great start! Joslyn and Roman were teenage sweethearts, childhood best friends, whose lives were ripped apart by tragedy. He’s gone on to become a world-famous rock star, but when he gets himself into some legal trouble, Joslyn steps up to help out the only man she’s ever loved and has never been able to forget. But it’s also because of Roman’s legal problems that Joslyn’s been unwillingly thrust into the spotlight.

The story is an emotional, heartbreaking one, as Joslyn and Roman try to balance their different lives and lifestyles, what they meant to each other back then, what they mean to each other now. There are a lot of twists and turns along the way, but Roman is determined to get their lives back together in the right direction!

A great start to a new series! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Behind the Bars by Brittainy C. Cherry

Release Date: December 7th, 2017
Genre: Contemporary Romance

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.

I was the awkward musician, and she was the high school queen.

The only things we had in common were our music and our loneliness.

Something in her eyes told me her smile wasn’t always the truth.

Something in her voice gave me a hope I always wished to find.

And in a flash, she was gone.

Years later, she was standing in front of me on a street in New Orleans.

She was different, but so was I. Life made us colder. Harder. Isolated.

Caged.

Even though we were different, the broken pieces of me recognized the sadness in her.

Now she was back, and I wouldn’t make the mistake of letting her go again.

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.

When we met again, she was the darkest storm.

BLURB

I’ve watched him for years.
Every role.
Every episode.
He was every woman’s fantasy.
The famous actor.
Gorgeous.
Charming.
Perfection.
Unattainable.
Until he showed up at my front door.
Wanting something from me.
Something I wasn’t sure I could ever give.
It wasn’t safe outside my bubble.
So, I let him inside instead.
All the way in.
And once he was there,
I wanted to keep him.
Even if that meant risking everything.
My safety.
My anonymity.
Even my heart.
He thought he knew how the story would play out.
But I was taking our love off script.

EXCERPT

“Longest. Day. Ever,” I murmured as I searched for a vending machine on my way out the door. Gavin was only a few steps behind me and his responding chuckle caused me to flip him off over my shoulder.

“I warned you, new girl.” His tone was mocking. The crew hadn’t been quick to remember my name so half of them had referred to me as ‘new girl’ all day, saying it like they genuinely thought it was my name.

“Bite me, Hollywood.”

“No more Mister?”

I shook my head, making a beeline for the bank of vending machines by the elevators. “Nope. I’ve lost all respect for you today, so you’re just plain Hollywood now.”

“Your words have the power to wound, and you’ve cut me deep.” He was pouring on the sarcasm.

“Not my fault you flubbed your lines almost as much as me. So professional of you.”

I stopped at one of the machines and started plunking in quarters, not caring what it spat out as long as it was cold and loaded with caffeine.

Gavin moved to lean against the humming machine, tilting his body at an angle and smiling that damn radiant smile of his. “We all have off days; today was one of mine.”

I ignored him until half of my ice-cold beverage was consumed, then gave him my attention, squinting. “So, you’re trying to tell me it usually goes a lot smoother than that for you?”

“I rarely mess up. Sure, we all have those awkward moments where something in the script sounds dirtier than it’s meant to or a squeaky leather couch makes an unsavory noise and we all break character to laugh, but that’s about it.”

“Why today, then?” I felt my whole face flush as an idea hit me. “Oh shit, was I so bad it distracted you and made you mess up?” Dear Lord, kill me now.

“Of course not. You were great.” He stepped over and threw an arm around my shoulders, turning us toward the elevators. “I told you. It was just one of those days—no one’s fault but my own.”

He walked me to my car and held the door open as I folded myself into the seat with an exhausted groan.

“See you in the morning, Kaiti girl,” he said, mixing my actual name with part of my new nickname in a way that I really liked. Or maybe it was the way it sounded coming from him.

“Good night, Gavin. Thanks for making today as stress-free as possible. I don’t even want to think about how it would have gone without you looking out for me.”

“That’s what friends are for.” He closed the door with a soft click and turned to leave as I hurried to roll down the window.

“Hey, Hollywood?”

“Yeah?” He spun back to face me.

“Do friends also mess up their lines on purpose so their nervous, less-talented friend doesn’t feel like a dolt in front of everyone?”

He gave me a crooked smile. “Are you saying you messed up on purpose? For me?” He pointed to his chest. “Well, that was awfully sweet of you, Kaiti. Thanks for looking out.”

He walked away before I could respond.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I adored this book from the very first page. I loved how blunt Kaiti is, and her say-it-like-it-is attitude was refreshing. The way she kicked Gavin — the hottest TV star around — out of her house was priceless! The two of them had an amazing connection, witty banter, and so many laugh out loud moments, I couldn’t get enough of them.

Kaiti’s anxiety, however, nearly cripples her at times. And set against the backdrop of a hit TV show, many of her triggers come into play. I liked how AP gives little hints here and there about where Kaiti’s anxiety stems from. When the full truth about her past is finally revealed, I admit that I never expected that plot twist! Gavin was such an awesome boyfriend to Kaiti — they balanced each other out so incredibly well, and I loved how he allowed his public mask to slip when he was with her.

If you are looking for a celebrity romcom, Off Script is definitely worth checking out! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Anna Paige is the author of the Broken series; Broken Ground, Flawlessly Broken, and All the Broken Pieces, as well as Chasing Kade, the first installment in the Thrill of the Chase series and Off Script — a brand new standalone, due out in December 2017.

She lives in a rural town in North Carolina where the only activity is the rhythmic color change of the solitary stoplight and a very real threat of being carried away by mosquitoes. The only alternative to terminal boredom is writing, making life interesting if only on the page.

Anna is happily married, with one amazing son and a pair of hilarious pets. When she’s not writing, she’s trying to make a dent in her TBR pile. Given that she’s constantly adding new titles to the list, the chances of her ever finishing are slim.

And she’s completely fine with that.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Sound Of Secrets, by Whitney Barbetti

unnamed.jpg
Title: The Sounds of Secrets
Author: Whitney Barbetti

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: December 6, 2017

Blurb
I’ve been in love
with him forever.
But to him, I’ve always been off-limits. Until the night that changed everything.Maybe it was the alcohol. Maybe it was the secrets we shared. Maybe he finally
opened his eyes and saw me.

By the time the sun rose, I’d lost him again, my heart shattering on his
parting words: “It was a mistake.” So I ran. Ran until I was thousands of miles
away, in a country I didn’t know, surrounded by people who only made me miss
him more.

I never expected him to follow me … or to pry more secrets from my soul. In
exchange, he gave me more of his secrets too.

The more he let me into his heart, the more I loved him, but I’m afraid that
some secrets may be too big to overcome.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Another awesome, angst-filled romance from Whitney Barbetti! I love how well she writes flawed characters, and Sam and Lotte were so incredibly flawed! The Sounds Of Secrets is a beautiful story about self-forgiveness, self-preservation, love and redemption.

Lotte’s been in love with Sam for years, and when he pushes her away in a most terrible fashion, it absolutely crushes her. As much as she tries to forget him and get over him, her feelings run so deep, it’s impossible. When Sam then rides to her rescue, quite literally, Lotte takes the few precious days that she’s given to have Sam all to herself, hoping that will soothe the hurt she feels in not being able to have him. But, of course, Sam’s been developing feelings for his best friend’s younger sister, as well. And he doesn’t quite know what to do with them.

The way that Sam and Lotte’s relationship develops is well-paced. I didn’t feel that the story was rushed at all, and it gripped me from the very beginning. These two incredibly flawed characters eventually find a way to confess their deepest, darkest secrets, and rather than it breaking them apart, they lean on each other to get through it. If anything, the only complaint I have is that I wanted more from the ending!

The Weight Of Life — where the characters of Sam, Lotte, Mila and Ames were first introduced — is on my TBR list, and even though Secrets takes place before and after the events of that book, I didn’t feel like I was missing chunks of Lotte and Sam’s backstory. But now I want to go read Weight ASAP!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt
I was going
to throw up from the nerves.
No, I told myself. No throwing up. Not
when you’re expecting Sam to come into your room any second.
But the
feeling was so strong. I popped a mint from my bedside table in my mouth, rolled
it around my tongue a few times, but the urge was still there.
Oh, shit.
Was this a mistake? Was inviting Sam into my room a big fat problem? I was
leaving for America tomorrow.
The printed
itinerary, neatly stacked on my chest of drawers laughed at me. What was I
going to do? I couldn’t let Sam come up here.
My hands
fisted in my hair as I berated myself for telling him to come. What was I
thinking? I wasn’t some sexual nymph, skilled in the way Sam surely was. I
wasn’t a virgin, but I hadn’t actually messed around with a bunch of guys.
I didn’t
know what to do.
I walked to
the door, pressed my palm flat to it. I’d lock it. Then he couldn’t come in.
He’d walk away, and we’d forget this ever happened.
Look how well that happened the last time you
kissed him,
my
memory taunted me. Three years later, and
you’re still wondering ‘what if.’
There was
no reasonable escape from this situation. And, if there was, there was no
escape that would make me not obsess over the ‘what if.’
It’d be
okay, I told myself. Of course it would. Sex was nothing, right?
But I
didn’t even believe my own thoughts. My nerves battled with my own desire. I
couldn’t process a single thing.
I ran my
fingers over my eyebrows or, what was left of them that wasn’t colored in, at
least. I’d pulled so many out in the days leading up to the trip, needing some
control over this impending trip.
I trailed
my fingers to the sides of my face, tugging on my earlobes to ground me, and
then, in tandem, I pulled out a hair with each hand. The immediate relief was
nearly as intoxicating as the alcohol I’d consume in how it numbed my fears.
It would be
okay.
I took in a
cleansing breath, looking around my room for anything potentially embarrassing.
The blinds
were open, so I closed them, leaving my room in soft, muted grays aside from
the yellow lamp that lit up my dressing table.
My hand was
on the back of the lamp to turn it off when my door creaked open.
Sam stood
in the threshold, nearly taking up the entire space.
I switched
the light off.
It was only
a few loud heartbeats before he said, “Turn it back on.”
I
hesitated.
I couldn’t
see him, but I heard the creak on the floor by the door. “Turn it on, Lotte.”
Swallowing
hard, I did.
The room
was illuminated again in soft light, casting shadows into the angles of Sam’s
face—making him look exactly as he was: dangerous.

Cover Reveal: The Thing About Love, by Kim Karr

Title: The Thing About Love
Author: Kim Karr
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Model: Forest Harrison
Release Date: January 3, 2018
Blurb
The whole stethoscope-and-white coat thing isn’t my cup of
tea.

I prefer a man with an artistic vein in his body. 9 – 5 hours. And I
can definitely do without the half-lidded, sleepy bedroom eyes. (Okay, so
those are kind of sexy.)

Tall, dark, and handsome doesn’t change the fact that he’s arrogant,
cocky, and rude.
Not that I care, but he’s made it clear he wants nothing to do with a
quirky girl like me, which is why he said no.
Turns out no isn’t an option.
I have a quickie wedding to plan, and Dr. Jake Kissinger doesn’t have a
choice. He looks at our situation like he’s stuck with me, but in reality I’m
stuck with him. Stuck with his pouty mouth. His long, lean body. And stuck with
those loose, low riding scrub pants. (Okay, so the doctor thing is growing
on me.)
When spending time together turns into more than it should, I know I’m
in trouble.
He isn’t supposed to make my heart pound.
I’m not supposed to make him look twice.
And we aren’t supposed to spend the night together. (Okay, so he has
more than one artistic vein in his body, and other places.)

Falling for him is definitely a mistake.
Here’s the thing…
Jake is unavailable, and I know it.
Just not in the way you might think.
I guess
you can’t have your cake and eat it too.
