Sunny Shelly’s Review: Focused, by Karla Sorensen

Title: Focused
Author: Karla Sorensen
Genre: Sports Romance
Release Date: January 7, 2020

If you’ve ever seen your teenage crush ten years later, and he turns out to be a complete jerk, then you know how Molly Ward feels.

The last time she saw Noah Griffin was the regrettable day that she decided to climb into his bedroom window and turn her unrequited crush into something more.

That day was bad enough, but things are about to get worse.

Noah has become one of the best football players in the country, and he’s just landed on Molly’s front step.

As a new addition to the Washington Wolves roster, Noah’s presence is the key to Molly’s promotion in the front office.

The problem is, Noah wants nothing to do with Molly, and his surly attitude is making her job very difficult.

But he’s got another thing coming if he thinks Molly will be intimidated by one grumpy football player, no matter how much he hates being around her.

Once these two go head to head, their mutual dislike explodes into undeniable chemistry. But with what they have at stake, they just might detonate everything else along with it.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I can’t believe one scene in The Marriage Effect led to an amazing story like Focused.

From start to finish, Noah and Molly were a fantastic opposites-attract, enemies-to-lovers couple. He’s a grumpy football star, completely focused on his career to the detriment of everything else in his life. She’s a rising star in the marketing department at the Washington Wolves, and her promotion hinges on being Noah’s handler during the filming of a docuseries about his adjustment to a new team. They have a history and they hate each other, so that no-fraternization clause in her contract shouldn’t be an issue at all. Right?

So Molly and Noah’s history: When she was 16, they were neighbors, and she had a crush on the college football star, and even snuck into his room one night. Needless to say, neither Noah’s dad or Molly’s brother/guardian took too kindly of what almost happened between them. It was a bit from The Marriage Effect, but it’s covered in Focused, so no worries if you haven’t read TME. (But you totally should!)

Now it’s 9 years later, and as they film the series, Molly gets through Noah’s gruff exterior in a way no one could have predicted, breaking through The Machine and getting to the guy inside. The guy who has shut everything and everyone else out. The way he falls for her just sneaks up on him and it is MARVELOUS to have been able to read it all happening along the way. The guy who has blinders on is completely blindsided by a scrappy girl he never expected to bring him to his knees.

Focused is a standalone/start to a new series about the Ward Sisters, who are the younger siblings of Logan from the Washington Wolves series. It’s sweet, it’s emotional, and I’m not afraid to admit that I cried as Noah realized how empty his life was without Molly in it.

I received and advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Well, let’s see … I’m a wife and a mother. If the things that I write bring a smile to someone’s face, then I’ve done my job. I am obsessed with Outlander (both the books and the show). I’m almost exclusively a romance reader, which means some people will never consider me a literary snob. If I could meet one historical figure, it would be Jane Austen. I received my Bachelors in Public Relations and worked in health care marketing before I had my babies. I hate Twitter. I do it, but I hate it. Also, if you want to get on my good side, bring me wine and I’ll love you forever.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Come Back For Me, by Corinne Michaels

CBFM_Cover

Come Back for Me, an all-new emotional and riveting
standalone from New York Times Bestselling author Corinne Michaels, is LIVE!
One night, eight years ago, she gave me peace.
No names.
No promises.
Just two broken people, desperate to quiet their pain and
grief.
In the morning, she was gone and had taken my solace with
her. I left for the military that day, vowing never to return to Pennsylvania.
When my father dies, I’m forced to go home to bury him.
At least I’ll finally be rid of his farm, which is grown over and tangled with
memories I’ve fought to forget.
And that’s when I find her. She’s even more beautiful
than I remember and has the most adorable kid I’ve ever seen.
Years have passed, but my feelings are the same, and this
time I refuse to let her go. They say you can’t bury the past, and they’re
right. Because when long-ago secrets are exposed, rocking us both to the core,
I have no choice but to watch her walk away again . . .

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

An amazing start to a new series from Corinne Michaels! I was completely captivated by Ellie and Connor. The one night they spent together 8 years ago impacted them both in a major way, and gave them each a memory to hold on to even in their darkest moments.

A chance meeting gives the a second chance (once she puts her abusive marriage behind her), and a life that Connor never thought he could have. But when their pasta collide, will Ellie walk away for good or come back to him again?

Connor and Ellie are both victims of domestic abuse (trigger warnings!) and their survival and recovery is handled wonderfully by CM. Their mutual experiences bond them in an amazing way, and is the base for a beautiful, lasting relationship.

There is so much heart to this story, so much strength and bravery from both of them. I can’t wait to see what else unfolds for the rest of the brothers!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Always Mine, by Kennedy Fox

College
parties, beer, and one-night stands—that was my life.

Now, I hunt down criminals, ethically or not,
but if no one’s asking, then I’m not telling. Drinking and women are still
included, though I can’t seem to forget the girl who almost gave me her
virginity. She would’ve until I realized she was too young, and I wasn’t
looking to get thrown into jail.
In a twist of fate, we’re reunited, except she’s
no longer underage but still equally off-limits.

After ignoring her relentless advances, she
starts to wear me down. I only have so much willpower when she’s around,
running her smart mouth and showing off her impeccable dance moves.

Just when my restraint starts to crumble, my
poor choices finally catch up with me, putting us both in danger.

There’s no easy way to explain why I betrayed
her, but I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe—even if it means breaking
her heart.

ALWAYS MINE is a slow-burn, intense romance wrapped up in a suspenseful
beautiful love story. It’s book 1 in the Liam & Madelyn duet and must be
read first.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Having read the two other duets in this series, I knew that this story was going to be a doozy, as were the others. I knew there was going to be a lot of push and pull between Liam and Maddy. And I knew it was going to end on a jaw-dropping cliffhanger that would leave me wanting to throw my kindle.

But I still dove in, part of me hoping that I’d get something different. A resolution, a happy ever after, a non-angsty story. But I didn’t. And that is so okay because Liam and Maddy’s story is the epic kind of romance that left me wanting more, that I didn’t want to finish yet couldn’t wait to keep turning the page.

The layers between these characters was awesome. They met before. Brilliant. Liam’s gambling problem, which we got hints of in the previous books, runs so much deeper than I ever imagined. And it all sets the stage for a fantastic page turner.

I need the second half, pronto.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Rehearsals, leotards, and textbooks—that was my life.

Dancing is all I’ve ever known, but when Liam’s problems turn everything upside down, I’m thrust into a world I know nothing about. Secrets and betrayal changed the man I’ve fallen for and he isn’t who I thought he was. Regardless, Liam is all I’ve ever wanted and though I’m struggling with my emotions, deep down I’d do anything for him.

When Liam admitted his true feelings, things finally fell into place. Now they’re falling apart. Saving our relationship is his top priority, but keeping him alive is mine. Corruption and power are their game and Liam is nothing more than a pawn. Playing by the rules won’t end well, but I can’t let him fight alone this time.

Our happily ever after is so close I can taste it, but then it quickly crashes and burns, threatening to destroy us. Giving up on the love of my life isn’t an option, but in the end I might not be able to save him.

ALWAYS YOURS is a slow-burn, intense romance wrapped up in a suspenseful beautiful love story. It’s book 2 in the Liam & Madelyn duet and must be read in order.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Confessions Of A Naughty Nanny, by Piper Rayne

When a famous music producer moves to Lake Starlight it can’t just be a coincidence. It’s the universe helping to move things along in the right direction so that Griffin Thorne can discover me.

I have to confess—I’ll do whatever it takes to make that happen.

Confession #1: I may have overhead that he was in search of a nanny. What can I say? My brother has a big mouth.

Confession #2: It’s possible I helped along the assumption that I had nanny experience. Hey, babysitting my nieces and nephew counts, right?

Confession #3: There’s a good chance I oversold my qualifications. But my Grandma Dori backed me up, so it’s not completely my fault.

And it worked. He hired me. Only for me to find out that he left the business.

I guess it’s on to Plan B.

When he accidentally overhears me singing, I expect nothing from him. Then he asks to work with me on a song for our town’s Founder’s Day Parade and it feels like a dream come true. Until…

Confession #4: I’ve fallen for him.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

The baby of the Bailey family finds her happily ever after with an older man, single dad. Who knew?

Phoenix and Griffin are a great pair. He’s left behind the music scene in L.A. to focus on raising his son. He’s been burned by both his ex-wife and colleagues, and he’s looking forward to living a life out of the spotlight. Meanwhile, for Phoenix’s entire life, all she’s ever wanted was to be a singing star. She thinks that working as Griffin’s nanny will be her ticket back to Hollywood, but when her star does actually begin to rise, it’s at the expense of their romantic relationship.

I really loved how the insecurities/fears of both characters played off of one another. His fears of being used just for his connections, and hers of being abandoned/not good enough/being left behind. They complemented each other beautifully. I also appreciated how involved Maverick was as a character, not just with his dad and Phoenix, but with the Bailey family as a whole. I love that he and G’ma Dori connected like that over video games!

While Confessions Of A Naughty Nanny may be the cliche single dad falls for the nanny story, there’s really so much more to this book. So many layers get peeled back between Phoenix and Griffin, and it reminded me of why I love this series so much.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Dad Bod, by Silla Webb & Kaden Layne

Dad Bod by Silla Webb & Kaden Layne

Genre: Contemporary Romance / Romantic Comedy
Series: Under Construction; Book 1
Cover Designer: Cassy Roop/Pink Ink Design

Have you ever loved something so much you’d do anything to protect it?

Keep it safe, no matter the expense to yourself? No matter how miserable it makes you? Yeah, we all have. Some folks feel the need to protect their loved ones — I feel the need to protect my six-pack.

And my washboard has been well protected beneath sixty pounds of hardened man chub, but my sexy abs are about to make a comeback.

I do it alright, even sign up for a trainer at the gym.

This dude is just what I need to get back on track. He’ll give me the brutal drill sergeant attitude I need to kick my ass in line. It’s gonna be freakin’ awesome.

Imagine my shock and shrinking manhood when Jordan Williams walks in. A five-feet-six inch chick with more curves than a back road and just the right amount of sass and sweet. She’s bold as brass and tough as nails, and I’m completely screwed.

She encourages me to set three milestones for my weight loss, a way to reward myself for the pounds shed. One is getting back on the dating scene. It’s not what I expect, but I have a hard time saying no to her. I’m not losing my dad bod but my man card too.

All it takes is three disastrous dates and several awkward situations for me to realize who I really want to show all my tools to is right in front of me. Busing my ass in the gym every day.

Maybe I should have concentrated just as much on protecting my heart as  I have my abs.

Jordan is out of my league, and my goal is to get on her level.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

I feel like this book had a lot of potential with the hero being the one in the “ugly duckling” role.

After a health crisis, single dad Madden is spurred into making a life change, and starts working out with a hot personal trainer… Unfortunately, there were just a lot of small details in this book that took away from the bigger picture for me, like inconsistencies with the kids, and the way people spoke with one another. The conversation didn’t seem natural, I didn’t like the way that they addressed and treated one another, and that was a turn-off for me. Things about Madden’s ex and his daughter weren’t fleshed-out as well as they could have been, and left questions in the story.

This one just wasn’t a page-turner for me, and I unfortunately gave up. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Blurb:
Jackson Thorn was my best friend and worst enemy, but that didn’t stop me from wanting him.

From first words to high school halls, our childhood years braided a bond that wove in a direction neither of us could predict or outgrow.

Forbidden became a word we ignored.
It wasn’t that we didn’t care.
It was that we cared too much.

We had it all planned out.
We thought we could make it.
We thought we’d been careful.
But all we managed to do was prolong the inevitable.
Our destruction.

Hearts and Thorns is a standalone full length new adult novel from bestselling author, Ella Fields.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Angst and forbidden love come together spectacularly in this book!

Willa and Jackson have always shared a special bond. Although stepsiblings, they are just a few months apart in age and we’re raised practically as twins from the time they were toddlers. Everything changes when they become teenagers, however, and share their first kiss with one another.

It’s a bumpy road from there on out, and Ella Fields takes the reader on an emotional rollercoaster ride as Willa and Jackson try to navigate their changing feelings, dating other people, not being able to stay away from the last person you should be feeling something for. And for a while, it’s beautiful… until the fallout. I really hated Jack for what he did, what he put Willa through… until THAT SCENE in front of her dad’s house. And my heart broke for him.

The book is set in two parts, the second being five years after high school when Jack and Willa are unexpectedly thrust back into each other’s lives. Their past hasn’t been dealt with very well by either of them, but in drips and drabs, the truth about what led to their relationship imploding back in high school comes out. But it’s still not quite a rush to a HEA.

Ella Fields does a great job of showing (not telling!) how the breakup and family disgrace affected both of them, and their parents as well. I felt that there was a bit of a letdown with Willa’s mom and her apology, especially after all that Willa had been put through. But ultimately, there is a lot of healing, necessary healing, for all parties involved once Jack gets over himself and stops being so damn stubborn.

I haven’t read any of the other books in this series, which I guess center on some of the other couplings. The friends are there enough to support the story, and left me interested enough to check them out at a later date.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

A sex tutor.

The odd couple strike a deal. Four weeks of ‘tutoring’ for five thousand dollars.

When Austin coaxes Elizabeth out from behind her computer screen, the attraction they feel is undeniable. They’re both a little broken, but somehow their jagged edges fit. Shy, nerdy girl pays the local college jock to tutor her in all things sex, and they fall in love along the way. I’ve read this trope before, and I don’t mind a redo at all… but So, That Got Weird felt kind of… well, weird. I didn’t feel the instalove between Elizabeth and Austin. I liked them enough as individual characters, but I just wasn’t getting all the feels about them as a couple.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

About Amelia Kingston:

Amelia Kingston is many things, the most interesting of which are probably California girl, writer, traveler, and dog mom. She survives on chocolate, coffee, wine, and sarcasm. Not necessarily in that order.

She’s been blessed with a patient husband who’s embraced her nomad ways and traveled with her to over 30 countries across 5 continents (I’m coming for you next, Antarctica!). She’s also been cursed with an impatient (although admittedly adorable) terrier who pouts when her dinner is 5 minutes late.

She writes about strong, stubborn, flawed women and the men who can’t help but love them. Her irreverent books aim to be silly and fun with the occasional storm cloud to remind us to appreciate the sunny days. As a hopeless romantic, her favorite stories are the ones that remind us all that while love is rarely perfect, it’s always worth chasing.

About Take it Off the Menu:

Mile High Matched, Book 3

Saying “I Do” has never been such a mess.

Marlee Medford just got dumped. Yes, things have become ho-hum in her longtime relationship, but she was two days away from walking down the aisle with the man she thought was her forever when he called it off. Convincing herself that they’d be able to reignite their spark once the wedding craziness settled? That was easy. Suddenly finding herself without a fiancé? Not so much. Marlee needs to regain control of her life, and a weekend away with her friends is a solid first step.

As if to prove his point that they aren’t worth the trouble, the wedding he was supposed to be catering just fell apart. Feeling oddly protective of the jilted bride—his little sister’s best friend—his weekend plans now involve a trip to Sin City with her group of friends. But it looks like he had a bit too much fun in Vegas when he wakes up married…wedding night included.

Marlee’s attempts at getting her life back together are failing miserably. Her ex-fiancé is taking the house, her chihuahua is intent on a love affair with Eli’s sneakers, and she’s now accidentally hitched to the guy who can’t even say the word marriage. With their quickie annulment denied, Eli and Marlee just have to hang tight until the divorce goes through. It’s just a little divorce amongst friends, what’s the worst that could happen?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

After her wedding falls apart, Marlee’s life is in shambles. When her best friends take her to Vegas to try to forget things for a bit, she ends up waking up married to the chef who was supposed to cater her wedding. He happens to be her best friend’s big brother, and completely anti-marriage.

Antics ensue as they wait for a quickie divorce after their annulment is denied. And of course, they both catch feelings and Eli realizes being married to Marlee isn’t so bad…

I enjoyed this story, but I’m not a fan of third person POV, and that was a bit of a sticking point for me. I wasn’t a fan of Neva Navarre’s reading; I found her overly perky, But I did like Lance Greenfield’s performance as Eli.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Manhattan, by Kandi Steiner

Manhattan - RB banner.jpg

Manhattan, a standalone in the Becker Brothers series, a small town, country, friends-to-lovers romance, is LIVE!

The fire… the guitar… THE FEELS!

Manhattan Cover FINAL.png

Everyone knows not to fall in love with your best friend.

But when your best friend is Michael Becker, it’s impossible not to.

He’s everything our town knows a Becker brother to be: devastatingly handsome, charming as a thief, and the icing on the cake — a sentimental musician who’s never without his guitar.

And he was mine. At least, that’s what I’d convinced myself.

Our bond was born in elementary school, strengthened by circumstance and the promise to always be there for each other, no matter what. And the best thing about my life was being friends with Michael Becker.

Until it was the worst.

I watched him fall in love with someone else, and helped patch him back up when she left him behind. But when he drops the bomb that he’s moving to New York, I realize it’s my last chance to tell him how I feel. And I ask him to make one more promise.

One summer. One list of adventures to remind him that our small town has more to offer than memories of the girl who left him behind.

One last chance to tell him I’m in love with him.

And I’m just dumb enough to believe that maybe he could love me, too.

You’ll love this book if you love:

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I have really enjoyed the Becker Brothers series, but I had NO IDEA I would love youngest brother Mikey as much as I did! Mikey and Kylie are teenagers, and I thought, there’s no way they can compare to the others. But Kandi Steiner worked her magic and they are absolutely magical! This is a raw, powerful, emotional best friends/unrequited love romance and it completely blew me away.

It’s the summer after Mikey and Kylie have graduated high school, and he’s declared that he’s moving to Manhattan for a fresh start by fall. I loved that Mikey struggles with depression in the aftermath of being dumped by Bailey. And Kylie is the only person that seems to bring a smile to his face. She makes him promise to spend the summer with her so she can show him all the things he used to love about their hometown before Bailey broke his heart. And maybe, she’s hoping, he will see her in a different light, too.

And wow, does he ever. It hits him like a freight train, but one day, Mikey realizes that Kylie is all grown up, and his best friend is a knock-out. While things progress between them, the ghost of girlfriend past is always lingering over them. My favorite, favorite part of the book is when Kylie slaps him for kissing her while thinking of Bailey. This chick is no pushover, and I loved how strong and secure she was. No matter how much she loved Mikey, no matter how long she’d been waiting for him to notice her, she refused to be a doormat and demanded the respect and devotion that she deserved.

It takes him a while to pull his head out of his butt, though, because Mikey hurts her a few more times before he gets his act together. And it’s a fantastic Grand Gesture when he sets out to prove to Kylie that he wants to be her forever.

Another great romance from Kandi! Bring on Jordan! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

About Kandi:

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a diehard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.

Title: Wild Abandon Box Set
Age Group: Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: December 4, 2019
Barnes & Noble http://bit.ly/2XGNFnW
Book Description
Wild Abandon
When you fall in-love it’s forever. But sometimes forever comes with a price.
I never meant to meet Nathaniel Teller. It was by accident, on a Tuesday, that I walked into his bar. He was solemn, intense and hiding a secret behind those stoic green eyes.
I never intended to fall in-love with him. We were supposed to be just friends. But I fell for him hard, deep. There’s no turning back.
I never thought his past would be so dark. And if I thought I had any chance of being in his future, I was wrong. Because his past is his future.
And I need to walk away.

Wild Abandon Christmas
She wanted a Christmas romance.
He wound up getting seduced.
Crystal and Nate are mixing business with pleasure this holiday season in New York City! In town to meet with a luxury restaurant group, Nate finds a buyer for his Napa Valley wine but things don’t go as planned when a real life Vixen takes a liking to him.
While Nate is being seduced in the big city, Crystal finds herself alone visiting the most iconic places that should be enjoyed with the one you love. Will Nate be caught under the mistletoe or will this couple of wine and roses find their way back together for Christmas?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Two for one! First, we get Wild Abandon, and all of its angsty glory. Crystal moves to the wine country looking for a fresh start in life. She’s immediately drawn to sexy bartender Nate. Although they start off as friends, she can’t help but fall head over heels for the guy. But Nate has a dark past and is harboring a whole lotta secrets. When they all spill out into the light of day, it threatens to ruin everything they have built together.

Then there is a Christmas novella featuring the same couple. Not as high in angst, but still a bit of a rocky road thanks to another woman.

Once again, Jeannine Colette has written marvelous, well-rounded characters with loads of chemistry, and a story that will give you all the feels.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
