Blurb:
A hero who forgets Valentine’s Day.
A hero who remembers.
A hero with a Valentine’s surprise.
And a hero with a holiday declaration.

Dirty Filthy Valentine – When Donovan forgets Valentine’s Day, Sabrina spends the evening at the office, working. Until she realizes she’s not alone.

Filthy Valentine Fix – Trish loves parties at The Open Door, even on Valentine’s Day. What she doesn’t love is some of the customs associated with the holiday. Will her boyfriend ignore them like she wants him to? Or will he force her to enjoy the day in ways she never knew she could?

Dirty Sweet Valentine – Like her boss, Amy has a reason for being a Scrooge about love. As far as she’s concerned, that stupid holiday with all the hearts and flowers is just another day. Then a surprise shows up on her doorstep, and her evening takes a sudden turn.

Plus one more story featuring a virgin with a secret and the boy who wants to expose it.

These four standalone romances can be found in this steaming hot holiday collection, from the author of the Fixed Trilogy and Dirty Filthy Rich Men.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Four short stories featuring four couples from Laurelin’s Dirty Fixed world. These were fine enough to read on their own, but it’s not a series that I’ve followed, so I didn’t *love* this treat of catching up with the couples the way I probably would have otherwise.

The stories themselves are hot and steamy, full of alpha males and romantic moments with the women who have captured their hearts. So if you are a Dirty Fixed World fan, you need to add this to your TBR.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Cruelest Stranger, by Winter Renshaw

The first time I saw him was at a bar called Ophelia’s on a misty Thursday night. I was there to drown my sorrows after a trying day, he was there to escape the storm. After a brief yet incredibly cruel exchange, the handsome stranger bolted before I had a chance to tell him off. Incensed and three cocktails deep, I followed him out the door, determined to give the audacious Adonis a piece of my mind.
Tearing after him in heels and barely able to keep up in the freezing rain, I ended my chase when I realized where he was going.
They say never to judge someone unless you know their story.
I never could have anticipated his…
And I never could have anticipated the way our paths would cross again—or that I would one day find myself falling for a man with a hollow cavity where his heart should be, a man as callous as he was beautiful, as complicated as he was mesmeric.
They say never to judge someone unless you know their story.
This one’s ours.

Astaire

The sound of children laughing and shuffling down the hallway Friday morning is my cue to silence my phone.

I tuck it into my top drawer for the day and reach for my coffee, stealing a few more sips before the craziness of the day ensues.

I found the Schoenbach obituary—if you can call it that—earlier this morning. The funeral home posted it sometime last night.

Her name was Larissa Cleary-Schoenbach, and she was twenty-seven when she passed. It mentioned no family, no cause of death, no photograph. Nothing more than a birthdate and a single line about a private sunrise memorial service tomorrow morning and the words INVITATION ONLY in bold red letters. All caps.

I spent a few minutes Googling “Larissa Cleary-Schoenbach” earlier this morning. But I couldn’t find a thing.

No social media.

No LinkedIn.

No archived newspaper articles of any kind.

No graduation archives; high school, college or otherwise.

It’s as if this woman never existed.

“Good morning, good morning!” I take my place at the front of the room, grinning and waving and trying to psych them up for the day. Fridays are hard. The kids are exhausted, attention spans are waning. My students hang their jackets and bags on their hooks and then make their way to their assigned square on the rug. “Happy Friday!”

I maintain the smile on my face, sing our morning song, and begin the day’s lesson, but today I can’t help but feel like I’m merely going through the motions. My mind is fixated on that man from the bar last night—and the mystery woman he’s burying.

With the hyphenated name and similar age, it’s fair to assume she was his wife.

At first I thought it seemed odd that she’d have a private sunrise memorial service, but maybe sunrises were her thing? And maybe her passing was so tragic and unspeakable that all he wants is to protect her privacy?

By the time the kids head out for first recess ninety minutes later, I’ve concocted a beautiful love story for the two of them. I’ve imagined a passionate, love-at-first-sight romance.

Trips to Paris.

A sunset proposal.

Slow dances in empty bars.

Lazy Sunday afternoons sipping tea and trading poetry.

Saturday strolls in Lincoln Park.

New Year’s Eve kisses on snowy hotel balconies, her lashes covered in snowflakes as he wraps her tight to keep her warm.

In my heart of hearts, I want to believe he was beautifully, wonderfully kind to her.

That he loved her more than anything in the entire world.

That her death shattered his heart into a million, irreparable pieces.

I want to believe that that was the cause of his cruelty last night.

That he’s simply angry at the world for taking the love of his life away from him.

Death and loss can do a number on you. It can change your entire personality if you let it. Some of my darkest days came in the months following Trevor’s passing.

I want to believe Bennett has friends and family getting him through this, but last night, Eduardo mentioned that when Bennett stops in, he never talks to anyone—which leads me to assume he only comes solo.

Maybe he’s painfully private?

Maybe she was his entire world? All he had?

Maybe they’d had a falling out and weren’t speaking when she died?

The kids return from recess, peeling out of their scarves and gloves, cheeks flushed and eyes wet from the cold. Making my way to the front of the classroom to start the next lesson, I decide to do what Trevor would do if here were still here: I give the cruel stranger from last night the benefit of the doubt.

And then I carry on with my day.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

A horribly rainy night sets the scene for Astaire and Bennett’s first run-in. It doesn’t go well. And as they run into each other time and time again, he continues to be a cruel bastard. Even when she gives him no reason to be.

Astaire gives him the benefit of the doubt over and over again, to the point where she’s a fool. But she sees only the best in people, and thinks there’s a soft heart under the cold exterior. I don’t know where she sees that, because he’s a grade-A jerk. Even when he says he misses her… I questioned it because it came out of nowhere. There were no indications that he wanted anything other than to sleep with her, then all of a sudden he’s caught feelings?

There’s a deeper connection with Astaire and Bennett, which I liked, and once the pieces of Bennett’s puzzle started clicking into place, I figured it out quite easily. There’s also a hella lot of family drama with his mom and brother and his niece. Twisted, twisted drama. But it brings Bennett to stand up and be a better man, and as a result, he and Astaire both end up getting the family they so desperately wanted.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Firecracker, by Kelly Jamieson

Will you give in to the spark?
Firecracker by Kelly Jamieson is now available!

Arden Lennox’s charmed life may be in pieces, but she’d sooner get her hoohaw bleached than move back in with her parents. She’s no longer the prom-queen princess married to the football star. She’s a broke, penniless widow, and it’s time she stood on her own two feet.An under-construction unit in a quaint Chicago brownstone is cheap (free), but it comes with an unexpected surprise. Tyler Ramirez, her brother’s gawky high school best friend, is now a smoking hot firefighter who spends most of his spare time in her unit hammering, drilling, and screwing. Usually with his shirt off—a temptation she has no intention of indulging.

Tyler can’t believe his high school crush is living right across the hall, or how fast his fierce lust for her comes blazing back. She’s still gorgeous—a little sadder, a little quieter, but still with the amazing smile and sweet body that fueled his awkward teenage fantasies.

Despite her best intentions, Arden can’t resist grown up Tyler but the sparks between them send her into full retreat. And by the time she realizes the heat between them could last a lifetime, it could be too late to tell him…

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

When Arden’s husband commits suicide, her world is shattered. She’s carrying a lot of guilt and baggage when she moves into the building her little brother is renovating to start over. So the last thing she expects is to fall for her brother’s best friend, Tyler, who lives across the hall.

There’s a ton of chemistry between the two of them right off the bat. Tyler has been carrying a torch for Arden since they were kids, and he is such a sweetheart as he goes out of his way to make her see him as something more than just her little brother’s best friend. He’s a swoony, sexy firefighter, and the sparks fly between them.

Excerpt

“Fletch,” I
start, walking into my office, waving him on. As we pass by the children, they
snicker and whisper, the girls more stirred up than the boys. We reach the
office, I close the door, and ask, “Why are you here?”
“I came to
see you because I knew this was your lunch break and you’ve been ignoring my
texts and calls.”
“Maybe I
need some space.”
“I respect
that.”
“Clearly,
you don’t.”
“Look,
Fiona, I’m not here to argue with you. Or to crowd you or upset you. The
opposite, actually. I realized our wires have been crossed and it was better to
just come to you, face to face, and say what needs to be said.”
“You
couldn’t wait until I wasn’t working?”
“If you’d
answer my texts and calls, I could.”
“Fair
enough. What do you want to say? What needs to be said?”
“I would
like to ask you out on a date.”
“A date?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I
like you.”
“That’s
it?”
“Isn’t that
enough?”
“After
seventeen years of teasing me, of that stupid nickname following me around like
a poltergeist, now you suddenly decide that because I saved your nephew you
want to date me?”
“It’s not
like that.”
“Then what
is it like?”
“I don’t
know. Let me find out what it’s like by spending time with you. Let’s both find
out what the other is really like. Do we have to define this? Let’s explore
it.” He grins. “Let’s explore each other.”
“I think
you’re trauma bonding with me and getting that confused with having feelings
for me.”
“Trauma
bonding?”
“We went
through something emotionally intense together. You helped me. I saved your
nephew. But that doesn’t mean we should date.”
“That’s not
why I’m asking you out.”
“Is it
because we kissed?”
“That’s not
why, but it certainly adds to all the reasons why.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Feisty Fighter and Hot Boxer! This is a great addition to this series of standalones by Julia Kent. Fiona’s story opens on a much more serious note than the others, however, when an unstable parent of one of her preschoolers breaks into the school. Fiona goes all protective, and her kick-ass actions go viral.

The little boy she was protecting is the nephew of her middle school nemesis, Chris “Fletch” Fletcher. He’s also a friend of Will’s from Fluffy, so there’s another tie to the social circle. While Fiona has been able to keep her distance from Fletch over the years, they are suddenly put in one another’s paths over and over again. And eventually, new-age Fiona has to stop fighting the signs the universe is sending her about Chris.

This story is a wonderful enemies-to-lovers romcom. The bear scene when Will, Mallory, Chris and Fiona go to the cabin had me dying! So unexpected and so funny. There are some super-sweet moments between Chris and Fiona that weekend, and Fiona realizes how much time she’s spent fighting something that she didn’t have to be.

Life happens, whether you’re ready or not. All you can do is hold on and go along for the ride.

That’s the motto Hadley Jones lives by, and for good reason. Most of the women in her family have repeated the same pattern. Single motherhood. Working two jobs just to scrape by. For Hadley, wanting more is not an option.

Which is why her friendship with Sam Constable was doomed before it even began. He was sweet, popular, and destined for great things outside their small town. But when he risked one kiss, and told her he loved her, Hadley refused to believe they could ever stand a chance. Hurt and angry, Sam moved to his father’s place in Los Angeles, leaving Hadley alone.

Now, a year has passed. Sam is back and more determined than ever to convince Hadley they’re meant to be. But Hadley can’t forget how Sam deserted her. And when Sam learns of the mistake she made while he was gone, she’ll have to decide whether to let him go again, or finally take a stand and fight for the future—and the boy—she wants with all her heart.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

The Art Of Holding On is a super-angsty YA story. There is so much back-and-forth, push and pull with Hadley and Sam, and I probably would have given up if they were college students or older. But because they are high schoolers, I put my thoughts aside, and went along for the emotional rollercoaster.

Sam and Hadley were best friends from the age of 10, but everything changed between them after he declared his love for her. (It happens before the book takes place, so the story starts when Sam returns to town after nearly a year away, living with his dad.) I felt like a lot of their issues could have been avoided if they dealt with the situation (her shutting down, him taking off) with more maturity. But Hadley couldn’t help but be consumed by their differences in social statues, and kind of freaked out.
As a result of things they didn’t talk about, they both made some serious errors in judgement, which led to more hurt feelings. It all comes back around nicely when they are both finally honest with one another, and ends with a HFN.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

This was an entertaining novella. I easily read it during my daughter’s two-hour dance class. Michelle Morgan does a great job of detailing Cara’s struggles as a divorcee, and her hesitation to get involved with Jackson, whom she used to babysit. The age gap isn’t really that big in the grand scheme of things, and Jack is very mature, so I felt he was an equal match for her.

Blurb:

“Will you do me the greatest honor of all time and be my bridegroom?” she asks, hope in her eyes . . .

How did I get here? My assistant, bent on one knee, holding my hand, her expectant face waiting for an answer.

Just . . . how?

How did I go from being insulted by Charlee Cox to hiring her to be my assistant? How is it that she’s chaos in color – making me crazy and my life better at the same time?

I never thought I would be staring down at her bright blue eyes begging me to go along with this ridiculous scheme I suggested.

Yes, I suggested. Like the idiot I am, I thought hey, why not start an HR nightmare and have my assistant ask me to marry her?

Confused? Don’t worry, so am I.

But try to follow along, because this is how I became Boss Man Bridegroom.

BMBG_teaser-3

EXCERPT:

**RATH**
“Rath Westin, my boss, my commander in chief, my Gucci Governor—”
“I don’t wear Gucci.”
“Go with it.” She winks and clears her throat. “Mr. Big Shot, Barking Britches, and Irritable Ira—”
“Jesus . . . Christ.” I rub my hand down my face.
“Will you do me the great honor . . .” She wobbles on her bent knee and clutches my hand to steady herself. “Will you . . .” She tears up, her voice becoming shaky. “I’m sorry, I’ve never done this before.”
“I sure as hell hope not,” I say through gritted teeth.
“And I didn’t think I’d get emotional either.” On a deep breath, she finishes, “Will you do me the greatest honor of all time and be my bridegroom?”
Christ, nothing is ever simple with her.
“Why did you say it like that?”
“Did I not do it right?” she mumbles to herself. “See, I knew I was doing something wrong.”
“No, why did you say bridegroom?”
“Oh, well, that’s what you would be. You see, that’s what they used to call men who were soon to be married . . . a bridegroom. But then somewhere along the way they shortened it to groom. But if you marry me, I would give you the dignified pleasure of retaining the honorable title of bridegroom.”
“Don’t call me bridegroom.”
“Boss man bridegroom?” she asks with a cheeky grin.
How the fuck did I allow myself to get in this position? With my quirky and sometimes annoying but mostly efficient assistant, kneeling in front of me . . . proposing.
Proposing to me.
In a pair of belly-covering slacks and suspenders, hair pulled back into a tight bun like she often wears it, looking up at me through her red-framed glasses, her bright blue eyes shining past the lenses, begging me to go along with this ridiculous scheme I suggested.
Yes, me.
Like the goddamn idiot I am, I thought hey, why not start an HR nightmare and have my assistant ask me to marry her?
Confused?
Don’t worry, so am I.
Where do I even start? Maybe from the beginning?
Here is a quick rundown: my ex, who used to work with me, left me for bigger and better things. We don’t talk about her, ever, because she took my heart with her. Instead, I buried myself in my work. I became a hermit in my office, firing one assistant after another because they weren’t good enough or their voice annoyed me, or they thought salt was sugar and gave me one bad cup of coffee that ended their career at Westin Enterprises—that mistake was on them.
In my spare time—not that there’s much—but when I do have spare time, I follow my two idiot friends around the city, helping them avoid fucking up their lives. But now that they’re both in loving and committed relationships, one planning a wedding with my sister as the bride, I have much more time on my hands.
Maybe they’re to blame for my demise, for this ridiculous charade I’m now a part of.
What does this have to do with my assistant proposing to me?
Well, you see, I was in the market for yet another new assistant, and that’s when one of my best friends, Bram, suggested I lean on his assistant, Linus, to help me find someone. Side note: Linus is a gift from God, and I’ve offered him huge pay raises many times to jump ship and join my company, but his loyalty lies with Bram . . . unfortunately.
So Linus helped me find an assistant, and that’s where it started to go downhill.
The minute I saw her, I knew it wasn’t going to be a good fit.
Why?
Because she’s too goddamn beautiful.
Because she’s far too bubbly.
Because with every smile and checklist she devises, she makes me want to bend her over my desk and make her mine.
But, since I clearly don’t know how to make any decisions worth a shit, I hired her, right there on the spot.
And that was the beginning of the end.
Need to know more? Well in case you are on pins and needles about my answer to her proposal, I said yes.
Here’s the story of how I became Boss Man Bridegroom.
BMBG_teaser-4

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Rath finally gets his story! Yes! And he has one of the best meet-cutes with Charlee. She puts him in his place, and changes his life forever.

Charlee is one of a kind. As his executive assistant, she drives Rath absolutely bonkers, but he’d never admit that he looks forward to her different colored pens and office dance parties!

An engagement of convenience turns into something with real feelings for Charlee and Rath and they agree to being a real couple — but their past relationship demons prevent them both from really being all in. Him more so than her. She got ditched at the alter, and while she’s hesitant to get involved again, she pushes Rath to give him more of himself to her so she can get to know him in a way she felt she didn’t know her ex. Meanwhile, Rath is scarred from his ex, who was his former EA and why he’s so hesitant to get involved with Charlee. So when his past and present collide, Rath is absolutely miserable when he gets a glimpse of life without Charlee in it.

How did Meghan Quinn get through writing Charlee Bag Of Dicks without breaking down in hysterics every time?

The only thing that bothered me was the lack of mention of WHY Rath didn’t want to introduce her to his parents at Bram and Julia’s wedding. I get the plot point it serves, but I wanted an explanation. I did give him major props for that Grand Gesture, though!

In any event, this marriage of convenience story is a must-read, and the epilogue gives a much-wanted peek into the future of Bram, Roark and Rath for those like me who loved these guys. But will Linus get a book of his own?!?

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Meet Haskell Hodge. At sixteen he’s already garnered some fame as a former child actor and star of a popular cereal commercial. But that doesn’t do much for him when he’s dumped at his aunt’s house in the suburbs of Los Angeles to face an assortment of neighborhood bullies.

He thinks he might be gay. In fact, he could be the only gay person in the valley, maybe on the entire planet. Even if he does manage to find a boyfriend, their relationship would have to be secret and invisible.

After all it’s 1966. And though Time Magazine claims the sexual revolution is in full swing, the freedoms straight people are enjoying don’t seem to apply to everyone. And as much as Haskell attempts to hide his true self, carefully navigating the tricky and risky terrain of being queer, he’s still taunted and teased relentlessly.

Rather than give in to the irrationality of this hate, Haskell fights back, eventually finding an unlikely outlet to vent his frustration and angst—playing a bully in a screen test for a major motion picture. If he plays his cards right, it could catapult him into Hollywood stardom.

Of course, like most things in life, it comes with a heavy price Haskell’s not certain he’s willing to pay.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Haskell Himself is a wonderful, poignant, coming-of-age story. Set in the 1960s, the social climate plays a huge part in Haskell’s journey of self-discovery and self-love. But the lessons learned and messages delivered are timeless, and still very relevant in today’s world. Gary Seigel delicately deals with themes of bullying, searching for acceptance and sexual orientation in a book that is absolutely gripping, yet still entertaining.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Love According To Science, by Claire Kingsley

Love According to Science

Dirty Martini Running Club # 2 by Claire Kingsley

For psychology researcher Hazel Kiegen, science is everything. Her decision to swear off dating? Totally backed by her own calculations. Just don’t ask about her missing orgasms. She hasn’t been able to science her way out of that little conundrum.

But her biggest problem? Corban Nash. He’s frustrating. Infuriating. And deliciously adorable, but that’s neither here nor there. He claims to have cracked the code to falling in love, and Hazel is determined to prove him wrong.

Corban Nash created the theory of accelerated intimacy after numerous successful tests on his friends and family. Every couple who used his questionnaire fell in love, until Corban found himself the last single guy in his social circle, and a groomsman in dozens of weddings.

The only problem is, it’s never worked on him. And science hasn’t explained why.

Despite being the lone aberrant data point, Corban believes in his research, and with his new job, he’ll have the resources to prove it. Verifying his theory right under the nose of his nemesis, Hazel Kiegen? Even better.

There isn’t a theory in existence that will make Hazel fall in love with Corban. Not even with his sexy half-smile and temptingly muscular body. But from the moment these two rivals meet, sparks fly. And when they put his questionnaire to the test, the results aren’t what either of them expect.

Author’s note: Stand-alone romcom featuring a hot nerdy hero in hate-lust with his sworn enemy. A heroine with book smarts and a fluffy cat named Erwin. So much awkwardness and geeky banter. Super hot hate sex. Badass lady friendships with a widening circle of trust. And an HEA that will leave you swooning with happiness and your heart exploding with glitter.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Hot nerd alert! Corban is unlike any other Claire Kinglsey hero. He’s a of a bumbling, awkward introvert, super brilliant but super low on the self-esteem. He’s crafted a brilliant questionnaire about the science of love, but seems to be the one test subject it won’t work on.

But Corban really meets his match in Hazel. This enemies-to-lovers romcom is everything. Snarky comments fly between two people that are so alike and perfect for each other, but insanely stubborn about it. The copy room sex…. I think I needed a co-down after that!

Little by little, these two catch feelings for each other, but admitting those feelings kind of blows up spectacularly. It all leads to an adorable reconciliation when Corban goes all out to put his heart on the line.

And as a long-time CK reader, I loved all the cameos/references to some of her previous books! Ivy works at the same college as Corban and Hazel; Corban plays basketball with “the dads” from the Book Boyfriend series and Everly and Shepherd’s wedding is at the Miles family’s vineyard. Two of my favorite moments were Weston’s mic-drop “Marry Her” and Corban calling Shep “Satan”!!! Brilliant!

She’s his penguin!! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Once again, I’ll say it: I love LB Dunbar’s more mature romances. Most of what I read is YA or thirtysomethings, so I love diving into her books for the over-40 crowd. I love that the “surprise baby” Billy and Roxie have to come together to take care of in this enemies-to-lovers story is actually a teenager!

What can I say about Billy and Roxie? They are two people who have always felt like they weren’t enough. They both have their opinions about the other, and it was so wonderful for them to realize how wrong they were. He has a reputation as a player, and it turns out that his reasons for playing the field is a deeply-guarded secret he hasn’t shared with anyone after his wife left him. And Roxie feels isolated, having no family aside from Sadie, and then sees herself as the *only* woman in town whom Billy won’t consider hooking up with. But the spark between them is undeniable, and as they form a tentative co-parenting unit for Sadie, they kind of surprise themselves with their casual dates…. casual dates that suddenly begin to mean so much more.

I loved how the miscommunication between Billy and Roxie wasn’t that they were holding back from letting the other know how they feel, but that they were misreading each other’s signals.

Silver Player is a standalone in LB’s latest series surrounding the Harrington brothers. Billy’s story happens in the same timeline as Giant and Cricket’s story, so while there is some mention of what his brother has going on, it doesn’t impact Billy and Roxie’s story in any way.

Meet L.B. Dunbar
I’ve been accused of having an over-active imagination. To my benefit, this imagination has created over twenty novels, including the creation of a small-town world (Sensations Collection), rock star mayhem (Legendary Rock Star series), MMA chaos (Paradise Stories), rom-com for the over forty (The Sex Education of M.E.), and a suspenseful island for redemption (The Island Duet). My alter ego, elda lore, creates magical romance through mythological retellings (Modern Descendants). My life revolves around a deep love of reading about fairy tales, medieval knights, regency debauchery, and strong alpha males. I love a deep belly laugh, a strong hug, and an occasional margarita. My other loves include being mother to four grown children and wife to the one and only.
