Blurb:
Lucas Xavier is the last person I want to spend 24 hours with, let alone two minutes. Exes are exes for a reason. In his case, for a million reasons. Because he’s not only an ex-lover, he’s also an ex-friend. We didn’t just break up – we combusted in a spectacular bonfire of barbs and doors slammed.

Nothing will change that. Not his clever wit, not his ridiculous good looks, not his unfair levels of charm. And definitely not a wild dash through the city that takes us on an accidental scavenger hunt through our past, where we stop for a tango lesson, pancakes and a visit with some llamas.

And certainly not time together to make amends and say we’re sorry.

But, let’s say that was enough…it’s not like you can fall in love in 24 hours.

Indulge in the BOYFRIEND MATERIAL series! Three best friends. Three outrageous proposals. Three chances to fall in love. Three brand new standalones from Lauren Blakely! ONE NIGHT STAND-IN is a standalone romance in this series!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

One Night Stand-In is another fun romcom from Lauren Blakely. The enemies-to-lovers/second-chance romance trope gets a cute twist as Lucas and Lola spend 24 hours on the most insane scavenger hunt around NYC. They have sizzling chemistry and crazy banter. They aren’t only rivals in the graphic design industry, but they shared an incredible weekend in college that could have turned into something spectacular… but didn’t.

Ten years later, Lola is still holding a grudge about the way Lucas blew her off. His reasons why ended up being way out of his control, and I didn’t think it was that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

This was an enjoyable story, but I didn’t love it as much as I loved the other two books in the Boyfriend Material series. There are some fun appearances from the other characters, as the girls are best friends, so it was great to get a catch-up with those couples.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Lauren doesn’t trust men, and Hunter is over relationships where he’s been used bc of his family connections. So of course a chance encounter at Target leaves them both wanting more. When they are put in each other’s paths time and time again, eventually Lauren gives in to a no-strings fling. But before either of them realize it, they’ve fallen into a relationship as Lauren decorates his new house. Pesky feelings and a wicked nondisclosure threaten to ruin everything that they’ve built — when they weren’t even trying.

The banter between these two is fun and witty, and there’s tons of chemistry. Lauren and Hunter don’t have a traditional romance, but it works perfectly for these two imperfect people. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Blurb:

I was born to play and bred to win.

My priorities were instilled in me early on—family and football. Those ideals led me to TGU and a coach whose ironclad principles mirrored my own.

With one last college season to play, my goal was singular—get drafted. By realizing my NFL dream, I could save my family, our ranch, and the only home I’d ever known.

Two birds, one ball.

Playing hard was my only option, but there’s always a wild card.

For all of my planning and hard work, I never anticipated falling for the coach’s daughter. Harper was a fair catch, but who knew loving her could be the one play to throw my career before it started or that the weight of our secret would change the game.

*This is book #3 of The Underdogs Series, but you can read as a stand-alone. *Formerly published in Team Player 2 but is now a 107k full length novel with an extended epilogue.

EXCERPT:

Harper

“I’ve missed you, you know? More than you can imagine.”

“Can’t imagine it at all,” he says, picking through a book he’s not reading.

“Can I help you two?” One of the store sales associates asks, and I shake my head and smile. When she takes her leave, I look over to Lance who stands fuming on the other side of a table filled with loose items. We’re in a mismatch shop full of mostly cheap junk, and I can’t imagine him finding anything for his mother here.

“Lance, I have missed you. Horribly.”

“Could have fooled me.”

I can only take so much. Irritated, I lift a designer coffee mug from the table.

“You like this for your mom?”

“No.”

“How about this?”

“Nope.” He’s not even looking at what’s in my hands.

“You sure? It’s a hide purse. Cute for a rancher’s wife, don’t you think?” This gets his attention, and stormy eyes lift to mine.

“Would you buy that for you?”

I look it over and shake my head. “Not really my style.”

“Bet it’s not.”

I can feel my ears reddening. Fuming, I eye a box on the shelf, snatch it and shove it into his chest. “How about this giant fucking purple dildo and matching anal plug!? Think mom will like that?”

He looks up completely unaffected, “Nope.”

“I don’t think we’re in the right place,” Tossing the box down, I stalk out of the cluttered shop and into the department store next to it. He’s hot on my heels.

“Got that fucking right.”

I turn back to see he’s spoiling for a fight and release a stressed breath. Fighting with him is the last thing I want to do. “Look, lets, just…” I search around and pull a sweater from the closest rack. “How about this? Simple, elegant.”

“You think Mom’s simple, huh? I’ll give her your regards.”

“That’s it.” I hook the sweater back on to the rack and close the space between us, forcing his eyes to mine. “God, you’re still a brute, aren’t you? You haven’t changed a bit. Still pig-headed as hell.”

“Pig-headed?” He opens his mouth in mock shock and covers his chest with his hand. “How dare you.”

I’m in between fight or flight, but I’ve been dodging this long enough. My heart can’t take more confrontation. I missed him too much. His eyes flare with satisfaction at my irritation. “Misery loves company, right, Lance?”

“Never said I was miserable.”

“You don’t have to. Did you come to New York just to torture me?”

“Maybe.”

“Rub it in on what I’m missing out on?”

A voice sounds from next to us. “Is there something I can help you find today?”

We both turn to the woman with lasers in our eyes, and she swallows. I clear my throat. “We’re fine. Thank you.”

Lance winks at the woman, his eyes scanning her form. “Maybe you can help me?”

“You son of a bitch,” I hiss, before walking away from the table. His voice rings out next to me as I rip through a rack of scarves.

“Good to know you care, Priss, gotta admit, it’s surprising.”

I reel on him. “Don’t you dare! Leaving you was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I had to make a clean break. I had just lost everyone that mattered to me. I was losing my mind.”

“I got pissed for one day, and you went off the grid.”

“And you let me go because you knew no matter how much we wanted it to work, it couldn’t. You have no idea what I went through!”

“What you went through? Do you know I spent six months ranting to an Uber driver named Dave because everyone on my team hated me when the truth came out?” He stomps after me as I pull sweater after sweater off the rack. “Troy jumped ship after he got drafted. I had no one but Tony and those fights.”

I turn to him with twenty sweaters in my arms. “Jenner? When did y’all get so tight?”

“When shit got tough, and my fucking girlfriend bailed!” He glares down at me, his breaths coming out fast.

“Guys, we’re going to need you to take this outside.” A woman whom I assume is the store manager approaches us cautiously.

I look around the store and see all eyes are on us, especially the women sizing him up. “He’s available ladies,” I snap, laying the sweaters on a nearby table, “I’m willing to bet he comes really cheap.” He’s on my heels as I push through the glass of the department store.

“Oh, was I supposed to wait for you? Must have missed that memo. That’s it, you must want a saint. That’s why you didn’t stay.”

“I was twenty years old and alienated from a place I didn’t want to be anyway.”

“Good to know.”

“That’s not the way I meant it. And you know damn well until you, I was only there to appease my Dad, who I barely speak to now.”

“I’m sorry about that, I am, but that’s on him. And what in the hell are you talking about ‘alienated’?”

“Forget it.” I pull on my gloves as heavy snow starts to come down. “I think we’ve concluded our tour for today.”

He glances around the sidewalk. “Well, no need to show me more, I hate this fucking place!”

“And why is that? Not enough free-range chickens?!”

His eyes flare. “You digging on the ranch now, Priss? I saw a fucking rat the size of a cat on my run this morning!”

“Probably has better manners than you, shit head.”

“Pulling out the big guns now, huh? There’s that backbone. I was wondering where it went.”

“Go home, Lance, you hate it here. And you obviously hate me.”

“Just the opposite. It’s impossible, and believe me, I’m trying!”

“Well, I hope you succeed! Thanks for stopping by, Mary Poppins. Best Christmas ever! Make sure to bulldoze the nativity scene on your way out!”

“Fuck this.” He throws his hands up and eyes me warily before turning and walking away.

“Merry Christmas to you, too!”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Guy In The Middle by Kate Stewart — I loved the connection between Lance and Harper. Their mutual dislike from the first time they met turned into a simmering romance that neither of them expected. Neither one of them was looking for a relationship, but they can’t fight the feelings between them. But she’s the daughter of his football coach, and their sneaking around eventually bites them in the butt. For his own good, Harper leaves Lance behind, but his life still goes to pot and two years later he decides that it’s time to fight back. But will he get his girl back?

This story was more intense than Guy On The Left and Guy On The Right. Lance and Harper each have some pretty nasty demons to deal with and work through. They jus communicate quite a bit, he out of fear that his feelings are one-sided and she because she doesn’t want the bullying she’s encountered to affect him and his desire to protect her. I wish there would have been more descriptions of what it was that happened to Harper; as well as her dad’s downfall. But this story was worth the wait after it appeared in last year’s Team Player Anthology!

I loved the way the Underdogs series wrapped up, complete with a wonderful epilogue that included all there couples and a glimpse into their futures. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Tucker by Emily March

EternitySprings_blogtourbanner_V1.2.png

SYNOPSIS

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Emily March comes the second book in the Eternity Springs: The McBrides of Texas trilogy, TUCKER (St. Martin’s Paperbacks, February 25, 2020, $7.99). Two business owners come head-to-head in a feud with tulle and grit in this passionate story. This tale shows that even when life changes from the stress of a military career to working next to a wedding planner, love always finds a way to begin, even if it was never thought possible.

Meet Gillian Thacker. Her business: Bliss Bridal Salon. Her passion: Weddings. Her own wedding: It’s complicated. Life isn’t turning out like she’d planned. The last thing she wants is for a real-life hero to ride to her rescue, but an unexpected event puts her entire future in Redemption, Texas, at risk. So what’s a broken-hearted bridal expert to do? Maybe a new set of survival skills is exactly what she needs…

Tucker McBride has been proud to call himself a U.S. Army Ranger. But now that his days of service are over, he’s decided to put his expertise to use by founding a wilderness skills training school. He sets up shop in Redemption, next to Bliss Bridal, and so begins life: Part Two. Marriage has been pretty low on his agenda, but as soon as he meets Gillian, Tucker can’t help but contemplate the ultimate challenge: Convincing the reluctant bride to take his hand and leap into the adventure of a lifetime . . . until death do them part.

Tucker Cover Image.jpg

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

While I enjoyed this sweet romance, I wasn’t blown away by it. I really adored Tucker — he was a great, romantic hero — but I felt that Gillian was kind of a stick in the mud. This is a spin-off of another Emily March series, but I had not read any of those books and didn’t feel like I was missing out on backstory. If anything, there were an abundance of secondary characters, whom I’m guessing are from those other books.

Tucker and Gillian literally meet at the side of the road as he’s returning to Redemption (Ha!) and she’s stormed off after a fight with her fiance. Tucker is immediately smitten. and even though there is a ton of chemistry between them, Gillian is spoken for. She’s unhappy in her relationship, but she’s spoken for. Their paths cross again when he opens up his survival-training shop next to her bridal salon. When her relationship implodes, Tucker decides that he’s the one she’s supposed to be with, and goes all-out in convincing Gillian to give him a chance. The guy who never imagined himself settling down now wants exactly that.

Like I said, this was an okay book. I thought that their relationship stalled at points and felt too rushed at others. Gillian was too often a damsel in distress for my taste, and I didn’t really like her all that much as a heroine. She also doesn’t break up with her fiance until nearly halfway through the book, so I had a hard time shipping her and Tucker as the couple I was supposed to be rooting for when she was still (even unhappily) attached.

I received an advanced copy via the publisher and NetGalley and voluntarily left a review.

How much did I enjoy Brix? I read it in a single day. The story flows so well, I loved the tension between Ivy and Brix, and the arc of his character as he goes from hating her to falling head over heels for her despite the bet he makes with his buddy to break her heart.

The forbidden aspect of their relationship is kind of a non-issue as they are both grown 20somethings when their parents marry. But there is a lot of history between Brix and Ivy, going back to high school. And when we finally get to the reason why Brix hated Ivy back in high school (and how much of a mess his personal life is with his mom), it really adds so much depth to his character.

Brix is full of sexy sizzle and swoony moments plus a little heartbreak and a fantastic grand gesture. Escape in Brix and Ivy’s romance!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

All The Letters I’ve Ever Read is the conclusion to the Handwritten & Heartbroken duet, and is not a standalone. This time we get James’ POV, and it honestly saved this series from being a complete mess in my opinion. I was left feeling very unsure about this duet after reading Mina’s side of the story, but this second half gave a lot of depth to the connection between her and Mina that I thought was initially missing.

It’s not an easy road for them to travel. But James is so honest and emotional in his letters, and I loved that method of furthering the relationship.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Great And Precious Things, by Rebecca Yarros

Release Date: February 25
How do you define yourself when others have already decided who you are?
Six years ago, when Camden Daniels came back from war without his younger brother, no one in the small town of Alba, Colorado, would forgive him—especially his father. He left, swearing never to return.
But a desperate message from his father brings it all back. The betrayal. The pain. And the need to go home again.
But home is where the one person he still loves is waiting. Willow. The one woman he can never have. Because there are secrets buried in Alba that are best left in the dark.
If only he could tell his heart to stay locked away when she whispers she’s always loved him, and always will…
Great and Precious Things is a heart-wrenching story about family, betrayal, and ultimately how far we’re willing to go on behalf of those who need us most.

Get Your Copy Here:

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Great And Precious Things has a wonderful unrequited-love, slow-burn romance, but this bittersweet, emotional story is so much more than a romance. It is full of forgiveness, redemption, family drama, and how far you will go to right a wrong.

Returning back home to his small Colorado town was something that Camden never thought he’d do. But when his father called asking him to fulfill a long-ago promise, he put aside everything that was telling him not to go back home in order to uphold that request. My heart broke for Camden over and over again. He is not only the black-sheep of his family, but he is scorned and an outsider in the town as a whole. Silly childhood mistakes and misguided judgements are still being held against him, even though he is a decorated war hero. Nobody can get past how he was responsible for his younger brother’s death — especially his father.

Well, there is one person who forgave Cam: childhood friend Willow. The girl next door who he has always been in love with. But she was his brother’s girlfriend, and that makes her hands-off. Needless to say, Camden is blown away when Willow confesses that she’s been in love with him as long as he’s been in love with her.

Their forbidden, frowned-upon romance is complicated by the court battle between Cam and his older brother, Xander, over guardianship of their father, who is suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s. Dad wants a DNA and wants Cam to help him get it; Xander, who has Al’s medical power of attorney, is against it. The battle over Al’s want to die with dignity tears the family apart more than they already are, and the tragedy of Al’s disease rips them even further to shreds as his bad days outnumber the good.

This was a fantastic follow-up to The Last Letter. Great And Precious Things is an poignant, emotional family drama. Despite the rather abrupt ending (I would have liked something set further in the future, but it is what it is!), this book is one that had me reading and crying into the wee hours of the morning because I could not stop turning the next page.

I received an advanced copy via the publisher and NetGalley and voluntarily left a review.

I’m a hopeless romantic and adore all things chocolate, coffee and paleo. No, seriously, I need to have a caffeine IV put in. I’ve adored reading all my life, and writing naturally evolved from my love of late nights and promises of one more page.

I’m also a military wife of sixteen years. During my husband’s deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, I was devouring a book a day, and during his third deployment, I finally wrote my own. With a somewhat ironic timing, I received my book deal for Full Measures during his fourth deployment, and published a month after he returned home. We’re currently preparing for his fifth deployment, so check out the blog for the latest!
On the homefront, we have six kids. Yes, you read that right—six. If I’m not writing or playing guitar, I’m usually tying hockey skates for our four boys, or sneaking in John Hughes marathons with my two daughters. We fostered and adopted our youngest daughter from the foster system and we’re passionate about helping others do the same through our non-profit, One October! We’re always busy navigating the winding road of our daughter’s recent autism diagnosis, getting our boys to hockey, prepping for a deployment, and generally trying to stay sane. We’re die-hard Mets fans, but our hearts call Colorado home.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Heartbroken is wonderful second-chance romance that takes place thirty years after Aaron and Alane first started dating. She’s the local preacher’s daughter, he’s the son of the town hippies. Her parents pretty much hated anything that would place Al’s virtue in question or distract her from her hockey training. But Al and Aaron fell in love at the ice rink, and had no doubt that they were part of each other’s souls.

The book goes back and forth between Then and Now chapters, with each character’s POV. It’s a great tool to see how their relationship built up, fell apart thanks to her father’s meddling, how they each tried (and failed) to move on and then, despite her vow to never return to her hometown, reconnected.

Since these characters are in their mid/late 40s, I thought the way that Gabrielle G handled the big secret was done well. There was a lot of hurt on both sides, and Alane had every reason to think that she had been left behind and didn’t want to have Aaron return to her out of obligation. Sure, he’s hurt by Alane’s secret, but Adam is a very strong-willed and loyal guy, and makes Aaron see that there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for his mother. And in a way, it made Aaron realize that he feels the same.

I didn’t realize that Luke and Dex have a book of their own, and I am so very interested in reading that one now! Salome and Chris are supposed to have a book too… interesting, considering his past with her brother. In any event, the Gritt Family series is one that I’ll be looking out for in the future!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt

I jumped, shutting my computer, and glanced up at Graham paused at the threshold to my room, loosening his red tie. He always looked handsome in a suit and that red tie I gave him for his birthday. I didn’t expect to see him. My assistant said he was at the Governor’s Mansion. I rarely stayed there, but he used it as an occasional “getaway.” Probably from me. So when she told me he was there, I made the assumption (actually hoped) he’d decided to stay the night and get some work done.

“It’s not even seven.” I tucked my bare feet beneath me, still wearing my navy skirt suit and silk scarf—my long hair in loose curls down my back and around my shoulders just like Graham liked it.

He took calculated steps toward me, completely untying his tie, letting it drop to the floor before working the buttons to his starchy white shirt. I tried to forget my internet search, not that it mattered because I couldn’t hide anything from my husband. He elicited a warring of emotions from me. An icy tingle slithered along my spine, making every muscle rigid, while the warmth in my heart fed on the way my pulse reacted to his proximity, the way it always had done. That never changed. It was how I knew we weren’t broken.

“Did you miss me?” He smirked, shrugging off his shirt, revealing his defined torso—abs for days beneath a thin smattering of dark hair on his chest.

I was the envy of so many women. Every day I reminded myself of that.

“Nice scarf.” He knelt in front of the chair.

I returned a nervous smile, hoping the man before me was the man I loved. Graham untied the scarf, sliding it from my neck as slowly as he’d slid off his tie just seconds earlier. The scarf floated to the floor. Gentle fingers swept my hair off my shoulders, exposing my neck.

With the same feather’s touch, he traced the bruises. “It’s nothing …” His lips replaced his fingers, kissing my neck. “You’re fine. Right?”

I wanted to believe him. Could denial become truth if we just believed hard enough?

“I’m fine,” I murmured, closing my eyes.

“Want me to show you how much I missed you?” he whispered next to my ear.

Was he asking me for permission? Governor Graham demanded me. Pre-marriage, pre-Governor Graham asked … begged me to surrender to him.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

Wow. I am torn about The Life You Stole. It picks up right where The Life That Mattered left off, and it is definitely full of more twists and turns for Ronin, Evelyn, Lila and Graham. It’s definitely more psychological than the first book of this duet, and secrets and lies run rampant amongst these four friends.

But I didn’t love it. There is so much cheating that goes on on Ronin’s part, both emotionally and physically, and I couldn’t find a way to be okay with it. Maybe if he groveled a bit and confessed to it? But it just made him very unlikable in my eyes, and I couldn’t get behind him as the hero of this story in the way that he was intended.

The story itself is brilliantly twisted, and Jewel E. Ann masterfully created a tangled, tangled web. But R’s behavior just bugged me so much that I had a hard time getting behind this book the way that I would have liked to.

Sadly, this wasn’t a great conclusion for me. It’s well written, but the story itself was not my jam. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

No Stopping Now is a standalone follow-up to Michelle Morgan’s No Turning Back, and is the story of Cara’s little sister, Paris, and Jack’s roommate, Dean.

Paris and Dean have a scorching one-night stand after meeting at a bar. (They never crossed paths despite their common connection in Cara and Jackson.) But she’d called herself “Pare” and he gave her his brother’s name. Still, Dean hasn’t been able to get her off of his mind, even months later. Now that Jack’s moved out, Dean could use a new roommate, and Paris is desperate to move out of her mother’s house. Dean takes Jack’s word for it that Cara’s sister isn’t crazypants, and his mind is blown when he arrives home one day to discover that his new roommate is his former fling.

There’s a lot of great chemistry between Paris and Dean, but the story lags at points. No Stopping Now is a decent story, but I didn’t find it so fantastic that I’ll be running back to reread it in the future.
