BLURB

From the author of Warrior Blue comes an emotional, gritty story about redemption, love, and an antihero with a desperation to achieve his lifelong dream – to be a good man.

Are you ready for redemption?

My name is Soldier, but I was never meant to be a hero.

From the moment I was born, I was looked at as a beacon of hope, a guiding light—a savior. But that type of pressure can drive a man to desperation, to do things he shouldn’t, and in my case, that’s exactly what happened.

All I ever wanted to be was a good person, someone my grandparents could be proud of, but for a long time, I couldn’t find the strength to be proud of myself.

I paid the price.

I did my time.

Yet … somehow, I got lucky.

I was given a second chance to do better, to be the man I always believed I could be. And after finding the love I never knew I deserved, I’m starting to wonder if there’s still room for me to be a hero after all …

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Soldier Mason’s story in Saving Rain is a phenomenal, heartbreaking, inspirational tale of survival, redemption, forgiveness — and an anti-hero finding love in a world where he thought he wasn’t meant to be happy.

Told completely from Soldier’s POV, this story unfolds in Before chapters and After chapters. Soldier has been dealt one crappy hand after another in his life, and at the crux of everything he has ever done was protecting his drug-addict mom. One stupid decision alters his life forever, leaving Soldier to spend a decade in jail. After he’s released, he is given a second chance at life thanks to Harry, one of the prison guards who took a liking to Soldier, knowing that he wasn’t at all the bad guy he claimed to be but rather a kid who got caught up in a bad situation. Soldier is able to turn his life around thanks to Harry’s help, and that’s when he meets his inquisitive young neighbor, Noah, and falls for Noah’s pretty mom, Ray — or Rain. As it turns out, these characters are connected in more ways than they know.

This poignant story wasn’t a light and upbeat one by any stretch, but it was positively magical. Both Ray and Soldier are survivors, and my heart broke for both of them — where they’d come from, what they’d been though, and the obstacles they faced to be together. Ray was a balm to Soldier’s tortured soul, and for Ray and Noah, he got to do what he does best: protecting.

As this book is set in River Canyon, there are some great cameos by some of the Kinney family members from previous Kelsey Kingsley books, and I loved those Easter eggs!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
