Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars
If you’ve read the previous books in this series, you know that Pearson is a cut-throat divorce attorney, one of the best in Manhattan. But we never knew he was an alcoholic and drug addict until now. Pearson truly gets a second chance at life right from the start of this book, but he struggles every step of the way.
The last person ever that addiction counsellor Rose expected to become one of her clients at the Flower Power rehab facility is her ex-husband’s divorce attorney. If there is anyone Rose blames for losing custody of 4-year-old Montana to her angry, abusive ex-husband, it is Pearson West. The chemistry between them is electric from the start, but Rose holds SO MUCH hatred for Pearson, it’s border-line unprofessional.
Ultimately, Rose removes herself from Pearson’s case. And he goes about trying to atone for his past mistakes by helping Rose regain custody of Montana. As they work together on Rose’s case, she begins to thaw toward Pearson, and becomes a critical support in his recovery. And along the way, Pearson becomes a completely different person. The vulnerability he shows over and over again is heartwarming and heartbreaking all at once.
The twists and turns that this story took were amazing. The relationship between Pearson and Rose was a slow build, but a show of incredible strength on both their parts. The bond that Pearson has with his brothers, Grey and Hudson, is remarkable, and the support that he gets from his parents completes this close-knit bunch. But my favorite relationship in this story is the bond that forms between Mouse and Mister. Watching Pearson become wrapped around Montanta’s little finger made me feel all warm and fuzzy. He not only got a second (and third!) chance at life thanks to Rose, but he got the family his former jaded self never wanted.
I am sorry to see this series come to an end, but I loved the catch-ups with Grey and Marin, Hudson and Millie and all the kids. I’m excited to see what comes next in AM Hargrove’s next series, featuring the Wests’ cousin, Rose’s co-worker Sylvie.
I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
