-A reclusive rock star going through the motions-

Jake McKallister might have been a rock star, but he was no ordinary one. Surviving an unspeakable crime as a young teen had shaped him into a guarded workaholic, and he now lived his life trying to forget. If it hadn’t been for music and the redemption he found through it, he might not have survived. Career success came easily for him. Personal connections did not.

-A vivacious college student embracing life-

When outspoken and fun-loving Casey Caldwell was paired with the famously reserved musician for a friend’s wedding, she was prepared for the worst. What could they possibly have in common? She was a bubbly talker; he was a media-shy loner. His life was filled with music; she couldn’t carry a tune. She’d enjoyed a happy childhood; his was a well-publicized nightmare.

-Their worlds are about to collide-

Despite their obvious differences, Jake and Casey found each other, and her light balanced out his darkness. Would their love be strong enough to survive the weight of his tragic past?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

This book. This book! I expected a never-would-ever-actually-happen story between a Plain Jane and a famous rocker. But this story was so much more. Despite being the biggest rock star on the planet, Jake is so terribly broken as a result of a traumatic childhood experience, and has completely closed himself off from most of the world. He meets Casey at his brother’s wedding and they are paired together as members of the bridal party, and when she refuses to let him brush her off, sparks fly. The banter between Jake and Casey literally had me laughing out loud, and my gut clenched as this couple tried to overcome the obstacles placed in their path due to Jake’s inner demons.

There are some graphic scenes about kidnapping and abuse, so proceed with caution if those are triggers for you. But ultimately, this was a beautiful love story between an ordinary girl who becomes “everything” to a troubled young man who never imagined that he was worthy of anything. Read this book!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: I Wanna Text You Up, by Teagen Hunter

Title: I Wanna Text You Up
Author: Teagan Hunter
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: February 1, 2018
When I put up a ROOMMATE WANTED poster, he was the last person on earth I thought would respond.
He was also the last person on earth I’d agree to let live with me…on purpose.
But, here we are—roommates. I’m certain we can coexist without it being awkward, and I’m determined to make it work. There will be no sexual tension building with each accidental touch, no flutters when he wears that stupid backward baseball cap, and definitely no flirting when we text back and forth.
Caleb Mills can’t be the guy for me. He’s my best friend’s ex-boyfriend.
And that would be wrong…right?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Roommate romance is one of my favorite tropes, and I Wanna Text You Up adds in the “best friend’s ex” trope to make it a slightly forbidden romance. When Delia moves in with her boyfriend, Zoe is left alone in their apartment and searches for a new roommate. She doesn’t NEED one, but rather simply wants one so she won’t be alone and bored. Enter Caleb, who just so happens to be Delia’s ex-boyfriend. Zoe’s email exchanges with this potential male roommate are laugh-out-loud, and the moment when Zoe and Caleb realize that they’ve actually been emailing with each other sets the stage for what starts out to be an awkward cohabitation.

I loved how even though Zoe and Caleb are clearly attracted to one another, there is a lot of build-up to them crossing the line. Their relationship really grows through their flirty text messages and playful banter. Everything about their relationship seems easy and natural — except for the secret Caleb is keeping about where he disappears to every Sunday.

This story is a follow-up to Delia’s story, Let’s Get Textual, which is where Zoe and Caleb are first introduced. Having not read LGT, I can say that Text You Up is a true standalone — there are some references to events that I gather happened in the previous book, but I did not feel like I was missing chunks of the story as a result.

Overall, this was a light, playful, fun, sexy read. While it definitely ranks high on the romance and innuendo, it is not very smutty. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

“I Wanna Text You Up was an incredibly sweet, sexy, hilarious, and highly entertaining standalone romantic comedy, and I absolutely loved it!” – Julia – *The Romance Bibliophile*

“I Wanna Text You Up was a sweet, sexy and hilariously laughable romantic comedy.” – Aurora *Whoo Gives A Hoot*

“Ms. Hunter definitely has a way with words and has easily become one of my favorite authors!” – Amanda Mann *Rabid Readers Book Blog*

THE BEAU & THE BELLE by R.S. Grey is available now! Don’t miss your hands on this new romantic comedy – read for free with Kindle Unlimited or grab it for just $2.99!

About THE BEAU & THE BELLE

Beau Fortier starred in most of my cringe-worthy teenage fantasies.

I met him when I was a junior in high school, a time that revolved exclusively around bad hair, failed forays into flirting, and scientific inquiries into which brand of toilet paper worked best for stuffing bras.

That is, until Beau moved into the small guest house just beyond my bedroom window.

A 24-year-old law student at Tulane, Beau was as mysterious to me as second base (both in baseball and in the bedroom). He was older. Intimidating. Hot. Boys my age had chicken legs and chubby cheeks. Beau had calloused hands and a jaw cut from steel. Our interactions were scarce—mostly involving slight stalking on my end—and yet deep down, I desperately hoped he saw me as more of a potential lover than a lovesick loser.

Turns out, I was fooling myself. My fragile ego learned that lesson the hard way.

Now, ten years later, we’re both back in New Orleans, and guess who suddenly can’t take his eyes off little ol’ me.

My old friend, Mr. Fortier.

But things have changed. I’m older now—poised and confident. My ego wears a bulletproof vest. The butterflies that once filled my stomach have all perished.

When I was a teenager, Beau warned me to guard my heart.

Let’s hope he knows how to guard his.

See the city from the top of the Empire State Building: Check.

Eat hot dogs on the steps of The Met: Check.

About the Author

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey.

From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Tristan by Karla Sorensen

Title: Tristan
Series: Bachelors of the Ridge
Author: Karla Sorensen
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: January 25, 2018
There’s one thing you should know about Tristan Whitfield: he’s been in love with Anna for years.
There are two problems with that: she has no idea, and she’s married. Or at least, she was.
Anna Callahan knows three things about her brother’s friend, Tristan: he’s quiet, incredibly handsome, and has a smolder that could set the room on fire.
For years, it wasn’t difficult for Anna to overlook all of that. But when Tristan is the solution to a work problem that could derail her career, he is anything but easy to ignore.
To Tristan, the fact that the object of his affection is suddenly single means he should tread lightly. Be the friend she needs until she’s ready for more and hope the risk pays off.
Because it’ll add up to the one thing he wants: her.
Displaying blog_review.jpg

Wow. Wow. Wow.

I’ve loved every one of the Bachelors of the Ridge books, but I was anxiously awaiting Tristan’s story. Would the gentle giant ever find love? Was he destined to pine over a married woman forever? Would another lady win his heart? Karla Sorensen saved the best for last — and Tristan’s story was definitely worth the wait!

KS did a fantastic job of showing (not telling!) the reader just how tortured Tristan was in his feelings for Anna. We got hints of it here and there in the other guys’ books, but once she really delved into Tristan’s inner psyche, the turmoil he feels was absolutely heartbreaking.

Proving himself to be a true gentleman, Tristan doesn’t jump at the chance to ask Anna out upon learning that she left her loveless marriage.

“If Anna ever looked at me like I made it worse for her, like I was a stumbling block in her getting past this, I’d hate myself more than I already do for that.”

So when the opportunity rises to work with Anna on an interior design job, Tristan decides to just be her friend. But working so closely with her, in a sense, is almost worse for him, especially when Anna begins dating again and vents to Tristan about one horrible date after another. But for the reader, it built to such a slow, simmering burn that I was flipping page after page, waiting and wanting Tristan to finally tell Anna how he really feels.

This story is a raw and emotional tale of unrequited love, and it’s at times very messy as Tristan and Anna try to forge this new friendship of theirs. But it is so worth the journey, and a perfect ending to this Bachelors of the Ridge series.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

“Tristan isn’t just angsty or emotional. It’s absolutely spellbinding. From the first word to the very last, I was hooked. An epic finale to one of my favorite romance series ever.” – Bestselling Author Kandi Steiner

“I devoured this book in one sitting. Karla hit every emotion imaginable. I got mad, I laughed, I cried, my heart ached, and by the end, it was filled with joy. Tristan’s story is the perfect ending to an incredible series.” – Author Kathryn Andrews

Well, let’s see … I’m a wife and a mother. If the things that I write bring a smile to someone’s face, then I’ve done my job. I am obsessed with Outlander (both the books and the show). I’m almost exclusively a romance reader, which means some people will never consider me a literary snob. If I could meet one historical figure, it would be Jane Austen. I received my Bachelors in Public Relations and worked in health care marketing before I had my babies. I hate Twitter. I do it, but I hate it. Also, if you want to get on my good side, bring me wine and I’ll love you forever.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Look The Part, by Jewel E. Ann

LookThePart-SBPRBanner-BT.jpg

“Look The Part is my new top favorite from the inimitable Jewel E. Ann. Delightfully quirky, funny but deeply emotional, Look The Part was pitch perfect. I loved everything about this five-star read!” – USA Today bestseller Ella James

Look the Part, an all-new “emotional and breathtaking” standalone from

Jewel E. Ann is available NOW!

LookThePart Full

Synopsis

Flint Hopkins finds the perfect tenant to rent the space above his Minneapolis-based law office.

All the T’s are crossed and I’s dotted on Ellen’s application. Her references are good. And she’s easy on the eyes.

Until …

Flint discovers Ellen Rodgers, Board-Certified Music Therapist, plays music. Bongos, guitars, singing—not Beethoven administered through noise-cancelling headphones.

The cut-throat attorney serves up an eviction notice to the bubbly, constantly-humming redhead who’s too sexy for her own good. But luck is on Ellen’s side when Flint’s autistic son, Harrison, takes an instant liking to her. A single dad can’t compete with guitars—and rats. Yes, she has pet rats.

This woman …

She’s annoyingly happy with a constant need to touch him—adjust his tie, button his shirt, invade his space, and mess with his mind.

Still …

She must go.

Their lust-hate relationship escalates into something beautiful and tragic. This sexy, romantic-comedy explores the things we want, the things we need, and the impossible decisions parents and children make to survive.

JEA-LTP-teaser10.png

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Sex-In-A-Suit Stars

When I read the blurb for Look The Part, I figured this book would be another opposites attract story between an uptight guy single dad and a free spirited girl. I mean, she’s got pet rats. Rats! And while I wasn’t wrong, there is so much more to Ellen and Flint’s tale.

Due to his role in his late wife’s death, a guilt-stricken Flint doesn’t think that he’s worthy or deserving of another chance at love. Elle herself has a messy past marriage, and is nursing her own battle wounds. He can’t wait to evict her from her office space, but the instant bond Flint’s autistic son, Harrison, and music therapist Elle develop makes it difficult for stoic, stodgy Flint to do so. Their relationship begins as a lust/hate one, but just as they begin to develop genuine feelings for one another, life throws Elle a curveball that rips them apart, reducing their blossoming romance to a what-if.

 photo 039B9F34-D462-4A88-A581-DDA03A6B121D_zpsa8bb2jzk.jpg

While Look The Part has some funny moments and exchanges between Flint and Ellen, there are much deeper themes in this story of addiction, self-loathing, forgiveness, redemption and learning how to laugh and love again. Flint, Ellen and Harrison are such rich characters, and the secondary characters (his parents, her dad) are just as enjoyable.

The arc that Flint and Ellen go through from beginning to end of this story is amazing, and I felt every ounce of pain, regret, trepidation and love from this couple along the way. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt:

There’s something thrilling, even a little forbidden, about a man in a perfectly-tailored suit. Flint Hopkins wears the hell out of a three-piece suit.

Not a single wrinkle.

Not a hair out of place.

Not a scuff mark on his shiny shoes.

His lips move, but all I hear is “I wore this suit for you today” as his hands make their rounds: caressing the buttons on his jacket, twisting his cufflinks, and adjusting his tie. It’s sophisticated fidgeting.

“You said you’re a therapist, not a music teacher.”

Observant men are sexy too.

“I did. And I am. Specifically, I’m a music therapist. Do you want me to explain what a music therapist does?”

“No. I just want you to look for a different space to rent. I’ll give you two weeks.” He turns and makes it out the door in three long strides.

My toes are on his heels in seconds, chasing him down the stairs. “Wait? You’re evicting me?”

“I’m giving you notice.”

“Notice? You’re kicking me out for what? Doing my job?”

“Preventing me from doing mine.” He pushes through the door at the bottom of the stairs and makes a sharp right.

“Hey, Boss, how’d it—” Amanda’s gaze moves from Flint to me as I follow him into his office.

“Hi, Amanda. Would you happen to have the name of a good real estate attorney? I may need to sue my landlord for wrongful eviction.”

“Um …”

Flint turns, halting my forward momentum a second shy of slamming into his chest. “Shut my door, Amanda.” His eyes narrow.

I don’t care how hot this guy looks in a suit. I won’t recoil under his glower. “Please leave it open, Amanda. I may need you to be my witness.”

Arrogance tugs at his mouth. “A witness?”

“For when you threaten me.”

He unbuttons his jacket and takes a step back. A whoosh of oxygen leaves my chest like it’s attached to him. The man has an air of confidence and mystery about him that commands attention.

When he turned around to face me a few seconds ago, I sensed the slightest agitation in his narrowed eyes and flared nostrils, but not anymore. It’s not hard to imagine Flint Hopkins in a courtroom—cool, calculated, ruthless.

“You seem to be an intelligent person, so surely you can see how the noise level of your profession could distract me from doing mine. I think sharing space with other businesses is not a good idea. You need a building of your own or maybe you should work out of your house.”

“I live in an apartment. And I’m sorry, Mr. Money Bags, but I don’t have the cash flow to buy or rent a building all to myself. You’re an attorney. How often are you even in your office? And when you are, what are you doing that requires complete silence? Charming snakes? Narrating audio books?”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Awkward, by Lily Kate

unnamed (1).jpg

Title: Awkward.
Author: Lily Kate
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: January 30, 2018
Blurb
Ladies,
I know how things
look from the outside. I’m rich. I’m a successful surgeon. I’m handsome. I
should have women lining up from here to New Jersey clawing for space in my
bed, but there’s one huge catch.
I’m f*cking
awkward.
Every time I get a
date, I spoil it. Asked if she’s pregnant? Check. Forgot her name? Check.
Bought a meat lover’s pizza for my vegan girlfriend? Check, check, check.
This is why my best
friend, romance fanatic Allie Jenkins, has declared that she’s swooping in to
save the day. She’s prepared a list of required reading straight from The
Ripped Bodice, and I’m supposed to take notes, learn from the best, and put
that shit into action. After all, practice makes perfect, right?
Wrong.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Awkward is a cute, if not predictable, best friends romance. It’s one of my favorite tropes, and Awkward did not disappoint.

Jack and Allie have known each other their whole lives, and after a series of bad dates, “undatable” Jack agrees to let Allie give him romance lessons. Great, except that Allie and Jack like one another, despite them each claiming to only think of the other as a sibling.

Awkward is full of funny moments as Jack and Allie fight their attraction, misunderstand each other over and over again, and finally give in to the spark between them. Lily Kate hits all the right notes as Jack and Allie then try to navigate the change in their relationship, and his mother’s meddling.

Overall, Awkward is a light, fun read, a story that is not too deep, and minimal angst. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly Reviews Undefeated by Stuart Reardon & Jane Harvey-Berrick

AP new - synopsis.jpg

A powerful contemporary romance set in the fast-moving world of international rugby.

When your world crashes down
When they all say you’re out
When your body is broken
I will rise.
I will return.
And I will be undefeated.

Nick Renshaw is the golden boy of British rugby. When a serious injury threatens his career, he starts to spiral downwards, a broken man.
Feeling abandoned and betrayed by those closest to him, he fights to restart his life. Maybe there’s someone out there who can help him. Maybe he can find his way back toward the light. Maybe … not.
Dr. Anna Scott might be the one person who can help Nick, but she has her own secrets. And when Nick’s past comes back to haunt them both, the enigmatic doctor is more vulnerable than she seems.
Broken and betrayed, the struggle to survive seems intolerable. Who will give in, and who will rise, undefeated?

It’s been noticed,” she began carefully, “that you’re not engaging with the team or … or with me during my teaching sessions.”

His lips pressed together and his scowl deepened.

“Look, I know this is all kinds of awkward,” she sighed, “but your behaviour is already giving Sim concerns. It’s making him wonder about your commitment to the team.”

Nick exploded, his anger filling the space as he leapt to his feet and began to pace up and down, hands scrubbing over his face roughly.

“He’s questioning my commitment?! I train harder than anyone! I train on my off-days,” he spat furiously, his voice tight with emotion.

“Nick…”

“I’m out there, slogging my fucking guts out harder and longer than anyone else during practices!”

“Nick…”

“I’ve fought to come back from injury. I’m fit! I’m ready! I…”

“NICK!” Anna slapped her hand down on the massage table. “Will you listen to me!”

His jaw snapped shut and his stormy eyes narrowed on hers.

“Sim didn’t see that commitment during my sessions.”

“And we both know why that is,” he sneered. “You don’t want any commitment from me.”

Anna’s eyebrows shot up and Nick looked as though he was already regretting his words. He took a deep breath and looked away while Anna chose her next words carefully.

“You assured me that you could be professional and…”

“Yeah, well excuse me if seeing you again is fucking with my head! Not everyone can be as cold and calculating as you!”

She knew she deserved his anger, but her own frustration was rising to meet his. The volcanic pressure inside started to build, searching for an exit, searching for weakness.

“I cannot have any sort of relationship with a client!” she hissed, her body rigid. “You know that!”

“Didn’t stop you before,” he taunted.

“You weren’t a client then,” she choked. “But you’re right—I should have stopped. Oh boy, am I regretting it now!”

And she tossed her clipboard onto the table, pointing a finger in his face.

“Are you trying to ruin this for me? Is that what this is? Your ego can’t bear it, so you’re going to make sure I lose this contract? Or maybe ruining my reputation forever will settle the score. You tell me, Nick! What do you want from me?”

She was breathing rapidly, and two points of colour marked her cheeks in an otherwise chalky complexion.

He spun around, prowling toward her, his jaw clenched, his hands balled into fists.

“What do I want? I want to fuck you so hard you’ll never forget it’s my cock that’s been inside you. I want you screaming my name. I want you to say it wasn’t a mistake. I want to make you come so hard you pass out. That’s what I want, Anna, and it’s fucking killing me to not even touch you!”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I wasn’t sure what to expect going in to Undefeated, as it is former pro rugby star Stuart Reardon’s debut novel, and Jane Harvey-Berrick is a new-to-me author. But I went into the book with an open mind, and I was pleasantly surprised.

There is a sweetness to rugby player Nick and sports psychologist Anna’s romance. While their relationship is technically forbidden thanks to his team’s no-fraternization policy, the two embark on a genuine friendship at first, which gives their later romance a strong foundation. When they first meet, Nick is in a long-term relationship, and despite their attraction to the other, neither one of them do anything to cross a line. When an injury nearly ruins Nick’s career, and then his personal life falls apart as a result, Anna turns out to be the only person from that part of his life still rooting him on. She stands by him, lifting him up through one of the darkest times in his life, but when the tables are turned and Anna needs a personal cheerleader, will Nick return the favor and come through for her in the same way?

Undefeated has an uplifting HEA, even though Nick and Anna’s journey to get there is full of twists and turns and roadblocks and a helluva lot of angst. The rugby scenes are gritty and raw, no doubt colored by Reardon’s own personal experience with the sport. The story is told in alternating third person POVs; while I do love being able to read both his and her sides to a story, third person is not my favorite perspective. And there are several times where POV changes mid-chapter; it’s not a huge deal in terms of the flow of the story, but my personal preference is a clean character break with the start of a new chapter.

Overall, Undefeated is a solid feel-good romance, and I was rather impressed by Reardon’s first offering as an author. We all know he makes for a beautiful cover model (like on Undefeated!) and now he can say that he’s a pretty good romance writer as well. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Stuart Reardon

Stuart is a retired England International Rugby League player who’s career spanned 16 years as a professional playing for several top League clubs. He has had several major injuries that nearly ended his career just as in Undefeated, the amazing collaboration with Jane.
Currently he is a Personal trainer living in Cheshire, and has an online fitness program: Fear Nothing Fitness.

Jane Harvey-Berrick

I enjoy watching surfers at my local beach, and weaving stories of romance in the modern world, with all its trials and tribulations.
It’s been the best fun working with Stu on this story. And yes, he did think about joining the Marines once.

I never knew when he’d come to me. Only that he would.

I’d never even kissed a boy the night I met Stone. The night I saw him kill. The night he spared my life. That was only the beginning.

He turns up in my car again and again, dangerous and full of raw power. “Drive,” he tells me, and I have no choice. He’s a criminal with burning green eyes, invading my life and my dreams.

The police say he’s dangerously obsessed with me, but I’m the one who can’t stop thinking about him. Maybe it’s wrong to let him touch me. Maybe it’s wrong to touch him back. Maybe these twisted dates need to stop. Except he feels like the only real thing in my world of designer labels and mansions.

So I drive us under threat, until it’s hard to remember I don’t want to be there.

Until it’s too late to turn back.

Annika Martin:

Annika Martin loves fun, dirty stories, hot heroes, and wild, dramatic everything. She enjoys hanging out in Minneapolis coffee shops with her writer husband, and also likes birdwatching at her bird feeder alongside her two stunningly photogenic cats, especially when she should be writing. She’s heavy into running, music, saving the planet, taking long baths, and consuming chocolate suckers. She’s worked a surprisingly large number of waitressing jobs, and has also worked in a plastics factory and the advertising trenches; her garden is total bee-friendly madness and her most unfavorite word is nosh or possibly fob. A NYT bestselling author, she has also written as RITA award-winning author Carolyn Crane.
