Maggie

Maggie paced in front of the window of Zane’s apartment, alternating her gaze between the street below and the gentle slope above town where the Waller’s house seemed to cling to the hillside. From here, she could see a patch of gray-shingled roof. Zane had been gone too long. Why was it taking this much time? He’d left minutes after they shared coffee and toast, both bleary-eyed from talking half the night.

The sound of heavy footsteps coming up the stairs snatched her from the window. She stumbled into the side table and smacked her shin. Breakfast churned in her stomach. When the front door creaked and opened, she froze, almost blinded with fear and nerves.

Jackson filled the doorway. They stared at each other from across the room. This was Jackson. The adult Jackson. His facial features, delicate when they were young, had hardened into sexy contours. His body was more substantial, thick and muscular.

An invisible hand wrapped around her heart and squeezed until the pain was nearly unbearable.

“Jackson,” she whispered. Tears burned her cheeks.

His face contorted into a dozen spasms. “Is it really you?”

She nodded, sobbing now.

He crossed the room with his arms outstretched. She moved toward him through the blurry fog of her tears.

When they reached each other, he grabbed her and pulled her against his firm chest. They trembled as they clung to each other. “I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry.” He dropped his face into her hair. “I’ve wanted to tell you for twelve years how sorry I was. I never thought I’d have the chance. There was nothing worse than to think you left the world without knowing how much I loved you—how wrong I was to do what I did.”

“We were young and silly,” she said.

“I was young and horribly stupid. So careless and selfish. I’m sorry.”

“It was so long ago.” She brushed the side of his face with her fingertips.

He held her away from him for a moment, searching her face. “It was both a second ago and a lifetime ago.”

She lost all sense of time as she stared into his blue eyes and breathed in the scent of his skin. Had his lashes always been so thick and black?

“Here, let’s sit,” he said.

“Good, yes. I feel like I might faint.”

“I’m not feeling too hot myself.” When they were seated, he held her hands. “Your eyes are the same.” He grazed her cheekbones with the tips of his fingers.

Her stomach dipped like it used to when she rode the surf. “Yours too.”

He caressed her cheeks with his thumbs. “Freckles like a starry night.”

She resisted the urge to rest her cheek in the palm of his hand. “That metaphor was always all wrong. Stars aren’t the color of nutmeg.”

“They should be,” he said.

Maggie flushed. Could he see how her heart pounded inside her chest? She traced the tiny lines at the edges of his eyes that made a roadmap to his hairline. “You have crow’s feet.”

“Medical school.”

“You did it. I saw the sign on the office,” she said. “Doctor Waller and Doctor Waller.”

“It took a long time, but yes. I’m here for good now.”

“I’ve wondered…how you were…if you’d gone to medical school. If you were married and had children.” She looked away, willing herself not to blabber and sob. Strong. Remain strong. Set him free.

“There was never a day I didn’t think of you,” he said.

“Oh, Jackson,” she whispered.

“There wasn’t one day that I didn’t miss you like hell. Not one single day.”

“For years my prayer was to wake without any memory of you. What a relief it would’ve been. Like a strong painkiller.” She smiled to take the edge off her words, but it didn’t matter. From the mournful look in his eyes, she knew he understood it to be an absolute truth.

“I couldn’t even look at photographs of us,” he said.

“I burned all mine.” She swallowed as a dull knife twisted in her stomach.

They both looked away. Suffering between two people was palpable. Pain molecules hovered in a charged mass between them. At any moment, the mass could unleash and spill agony all over Zane’s clean floor.

“There were a lot of good times,” he said. “They were almost all good when we were together.”

“Until we weren’t.”

BLURB:

Jackson Waller has loved Maggie Keene since they were six years old, but their dueling dreams ultimately tore them apart. First love—true love—wasn’t enough to overcome their individual desires to pursue dreams on opposite coasts. When Jackson learns of Maggie’s tragic death on her way to college on the east coast, his heartbreak, compounded by grief, renews his focus on his own future. He vows to do nothing but work toward his goal of becoming a doctor, and maybe enjoy the companionship of his new college buddies, The Dogs.

Maggie Keene left Cliffside Bay with two things: a broken heart and her ambition. For twelve years she relentlessly pursues her dream of a musical theater career in New York City, but when she learns her father is dying, she returns home to find the truth about her family’s ugly past. There, she discovers two things that will change everything: one, the bitter old man has spread a wild rumor that she has been dead for over a decade; and two, Doctor Jackson Waller is also back in Cliffside Bay—with his brand-new fiancée.

The second installment of The Cliffside Bay Series by bestselling author Tess Thompson follows the interwoven stories of five best friends, the beach community they love, and the women who captivate them. Prepare to get lost in a wave of small town charm, men you would love to take home to your mother, and smart, resilient heroines you wished lived next door.

He’s the best quarterback in the AFL. She’s a young woman desperately in need of a fresh start. Neither expects to fall for the other. Will he finally put love ahead of his career? More importantly, can she trust him with secrets so deep her very life depends on them?

About Tess

Like most of her characters, Tess Thompson hails from a small town and will always feel like a small town girl, despite the fact she’s lived in Seattle for over twenty-five years. She loves music and dancing, books and bubble baths, cooking and wine, movies and snuggling. She cries at sappy commercials and thinks kissing in the rain should be done whenever possible. Although she tries to act like a lady, there may or may not have been a few times in the last several years when she’s gotten slightly carried away watching the Seattle Seahawks play, but that could also just be a nasty rumor.

She currently lives in a suburb of Seattle, Washington with her brand new husband, the hero of her own love story, and their Brady Bunch clan of two sons, two daughters and five cats, all of whom keep her too busy, often confused, but always amazed. Yes, that’s four kids and five cats. Pray for her.

I’m a
confessed readaholic and romantic junkie. In between staring at a computer

with my very tolerant husband and two school aged children. (I’m often in
trouble for spending way too much time at my computer!).
I love
nothing more than spending time with family and friends, all water sports,

Release Blitz: Sunny Shelly Reviews The Invisible Thread by Lisa Suzanne

Title: The Invisible Thread
Series: The Unbreakable Thread #2
Author: Lisa Suzanne
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: April 23, 2018

Blurb

It’s love against revenge in the highly anticipated
conclusion of Lisa Suzanne’s #1 bestselling rock star romance series.

One decision was all it took for Ethan Fuller’s life to be
flipped upside down and for Maci Dane’s twenty-year plan to fall off the rails.

Ethan tells Maci about the invisible thread that links two people destined to
be together. The road isn’t always smooth, but eventually the two people
holding the thread will find their way to each other.
They found their way together, yet they keep finding themselves apart. Mistake
after mistake, lie after lie, grudge after grudge…it may be too much for two
people to overcome.
Are Maci and Ethan tied by the invisible thread, or will their thread break
before they can find their way to happiness?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

The Invisible Thread picks up exactly where The Power To Break left off — so read it second, people. It is the completion of a duet.

Maci kept something huge from Ethan, and once he learns what it was, he kind of goes off the rails. For as much as he claimed he wanted to be a better man for Maci, and wanted her back in his life, I kind of expected a more mature response from him. And Maci was just so insecure about so much where Ethan is concerned, I felt like they kept repeating the same things over and over again. In the end, I enjoyed Ethan and Maci’s story, but not as much as I devoured Reese and Mark’s story in the A Little Like Destiny trio. I can’t quite put my finger on why, because The Unbreakable Thread duet is part of the same Vail world. I think that the deceit and immaturity on both their parts is maybe why I didn’t fall in love with Ethan and Maci as a couple the way I did with Mark and Reese. They are both so insecure on so many levels and have a lot of fear and doubts about themselves and the other to work through. But that said, I still enjoyed this duet very much and hope that this isn’t the last of the Vail gang.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Blog Tour: My Life As A Pop Album and My Life As A Country Album, by LJ Evans

Title: My Life as a Country Album ~ My Life as a Pop Album
Series: My Life as an Album
Author: LJ Evans
Genre: Coming of Age Romance

Tomboy Cam Swayne is determined that football hero Jake Phillips keep his eyes firmly on her. After all, she’s been his since before she was born.

Cam has grown up literally next to Jake. They live next door and share a treehouse. They’ve played together on the street and at the lake since she could walk. Plus, they’ve saved each other in some pretty miraculous ways that even their parents find hard to believe. So, it’s only natural that when hormones kick in, Cam feels like Jake belongs only to her. And heaven help anyone that stands in Cam’s way.
Jake doesn’t admit it to anyone, but he’s only himself when the girl next door is at his side. Even though he’s three years older than her and there’s a whole string of reasons for them not to be together, he can’t seem to walk away from the one girl who makes him feel whole.
What does get in their way? Different schools and different sports as they grow into their teen years. His long line of “gaggling geese” that follow him like he’s a boyband superstar. And the illness Jake hides from everyone until his devotion to Cam makes it an impossibility. Will Cam and Jake ever get their happily ever after?

Inspired by Taylor Swift songs, this is a story of aching love and loss and learning to live through life in all its pain and glory.

What if you are my dream?

From award winning author, LJ Evans, comes a novel inspired by Ed Sheeran love songs about forgiveness, love, and healing.

Good Girl Mia feels guilty for her brother’s death and four years later she still isn’t really living life. But then a soulful musician enters her world and she inexplicably sets aside everything for an adventure she never saw coming. For some reason, she wants this gorgeous man to know her story. The story of a girl who gave up a body part to save a brother who everyone wanted to survive more than the girl herself. And how that hadn’t worked out.

Derek Waters and his band have just signed on with a major record label and are touring the country. He has his own set of baggage that he hides behind a huge smile and a famous Johnny Cash quote. He definitely isn’t looking for any kind of female distraction. But once Derek walks into Mia’s life, he finds he can’t leave unless she comes with him.

Will Derek and Mia be able to find a path to forgiveness and healing? Or will they be left with hearts more torn apart than before?

LJ Evans lives in California’s Central Valley with her husband, daughter, and the three terrors called cats. She’s been writing almost as a compulsion since she was a little girl where she was both inspired and spurred on by her older sister. While she currently spends her days teaching 1st grade in a local public school, she spends her personal time writing, of course, as well as being a voracious reader, binge watching original shows like The Crown, Stranger Things, and Downton Abbey, and traveling with her family. She is the author of several completed screenplays that have gone to the quarter and semi-finals of such contests as The BlueCat Screenplay Competition, The International Screen Writing Awards, and the Writer’s Network Screenplay & Fiction Competition.

Release Blitz: Sunny Shelly Reviews When Stars Burn Out, by Carrie Aarons

Title: When Stars Burn Out
Author: Carrie Aarons
Genre: Contemporary Adult
Release Date: April 22, 2018
Blurb
Stars die in one of two ways.So slowly that each layer burning out feels like agony … or suddenly, exploding
into a million pieces before the universe even has a grasp of what is happening.

When Paxton Shaw left Demi Rosen without so much as a goodbye, he stole her
shine in both manners.

Now, eight years later, he’s trying to pull her back into his orbit. The
nation’s most beloved football player, a tight end with a seriously tight end,
has finally realized Demi is the one who got away.

But she’s a different woman than the weak girl who used to come running
whenever he called in the middle of the night. Strong, successful, her life’s
mission being to grant the wishes of children whose flames have all but been
extinguished.

And untouchable, as dark and cold as a midnight sky with no moon in sight.

When one special child forces their star-crossed paths to collide, it’s
impossible to keep the feelings of their past buried. Paxton had been her
Halley’s Comet; the once in a lifetime love that scorched Demi’s heart in the
most spectacular of fashions.

She promised herself she would never make that mistake again. But, how can she
forget the dreams of love she once had, when Paxton wants to make them come
true?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

When Stars Burn Out is the third book I’ve read by Carrie Aarons, and for me, this one fell in between one I adored (Melt) and one that was just Meh (Elite). There is a lot of growth between Pax and Demi in this story, both as a couple and as individuals. To be honest. I didn’t really like college Pax much — he was a bit of an arrogant jerk — but he absolutely redeemed himself when he meets Demi again eight years after he ghosted her.

There is a nice connection between the characters, and their journey is about them dealing with the past and putting it behind them; there is no drama here related to exes or other people. As far as second chance romances go, When Stars Burn out is a pretty solid one. I read an advance copy and voluntarily left a review.

Blog Tour: Sunny Shelly Reviews Something So Unscripted, by Natasha Madison

Title: Something So Unscripted
Author: Natasha Madison
Genre: Sports Romance
Release Date: April 2, 2018
Cover Design: Melissa Gill at MGBookCovers

One of the most EMOTIONAL romances I’ve read this year! Natasha Madison continues to AMAZE ME with every new release! – Shayna Renee

Something so Unscripted is so much more than a love story, it is an all-encompassing, engrossing and engaging novel about, love, life and all the moments that make life special. – Denise Shh Mom’s Reading

Something So Unscripted is positively the most amazing book I’ve read. It gives the most heart wrenching story that will leave breathless. – Book Haven Book Blog

Zack

Finding my teammate in bed with my wife made the decision I had been fighting with for years easier.

It’s time to move on.

A fresh start and a new NHL team in a big city. Most importantly, it’s my son Jack’s best shot.

It would be both of our best shots.
Denise

After a bad childhood, I made sure I would succeed, so I lived for my job.

The problem is I die a little with each patient I lose. It’s part of my career at Hudson Children’s Oncology Hospital, but it doesn’t make the sting of loss any easier.

Seeking anything other than a life saved isn’t on my agenda until a NHL player walks into my hospital with his son.

We’re officially off script the moment we meet.

If this love is anything, it’s unscripted.

Displaying blog_review.jpg
4 Stars

I sometimes have issues with stories involving sick children — like, would the parent really be thinking about dating someone new as their child is fighting cancer? But Zack and Denise were so likeable — and Jack so utterly adorable — in Something So Unscripted that it didn’t bother me as much as it has in some other books.

When Zack’s marriage crumbles, he takes his ill son, Jack, and moves across the country to New York — where one of the top pediatric oncologists works. Luckily for Zack, Denise happens to be the sister of his new teammate and he’s able to get his foot in the door with her quickly. Denise immediately bonds with sweet little Jack in a way that his own mother never could, and quickly wins over Zack’s heart as well.

I did think that there were some moments where Denise acted a bit unprofessionally, but the overall story had me hooked from the start. Denise’s friends and family are characters from other Natasha Madison stories, but reads as a true standalone. (I’ve not read those previous books, and did not feel as if I was missing backstory as a result.)

And the epilogue? That is what HEAs are made of.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

“Zack.” I hear her voice and just look at my wife. The woman who said she would love me in good times and in bad yet is currently holding a sheet to cover her naked body. The four-carat engagement with matching eternity wedding ring glistens in the light. “It’s just …” she starts to say, and I look over at the man in bed next to her. In our bed.

“It’s over.” I say the two words I swore I wouldn’t say no matter how hard it got. No matter how much I saw her push me away, no matter that I always suspected she was cheating on me. Then I look over at the man who I called a brother, the man who stood by my side on and off the ice. “You’re scum.”

“It just happened,” Colton says, getting out of the bed. At least he’s wearing boxers. His knee is still wrapped from the operation he had last month, which is why he wasn’t on the road with us, which is how I surprised them.

We were on the road for the whole week and due back tomorrow, but I hightailed it out of there to get home to my family and my son. “It just so happened you walked into my house and slept with my wife?” I ask him, and I have to wonder why I’m not more pissed, why I’m not more angry with them. “You come here and sleep with my wife with my son under the same roof.”

“Zack,” my wife says, and I look over at her again. Tears are rolling down her cheeks, her perfectly made up face now streaked with the black mascara she always wears. “Please let’s …”

I shake my head, putting my hands in my pockets. “Let’s what? Let’s talk about this?” I throw my head back and laugh. “Let’s talk about the fact that our son is in his room dying. Let’s talk about the fact that instead of helping him, you’re just helping yourself. Let’s talk about the fucking fact that instead of being there by his side with me, you chose to escape the fucking reality that our son won’t make it to six years old.”

“No.” She shakes her head, and I know that I’ve about had it.

“I’ll give you an hour,” I tell them both. “One hour and I want you packed and at the door when I come back.”

“But—” she says.

“But nothing, Chantal. You did what you had to do for you, and now I’m doing what I need to do for our son.”

I turn and walk out of our bedroom, then down the winding staircase that leads to the big brass front doors. Once outside in the warm Arizona air, I take my phone out of my pocket and call the only person I know who has my back no matter what. My agent and best friend, Jamie.

He answers after one ring, and it doesn’t surprise me he sleeps with his phone in his hand. “What’s up?” he says, his voice sleepy since it’s four a.m. in New York.

“I want out of Arizona, make the trade. Call the powers that be; I want out,” I tell him, getting into my Range Rover.

“You can’t just demand that,” he says, and I hear sheets rustle.

“Just walked in on Colton fucking my wife, so you can bet your ass I can. Make it happen. Call New York because it’s the only place I’ll go. I don’t care if I take a pay cut.”

“That fucking scumbag,” he says. “I’ll call them now.”

“Jamie, there is a top-notch doctor who specializes in cancer in New York. Max Horton’s sister,” I tell him quietly and slowly drive out of my gate.

“I’ll make it happen,” he says softly. “I’ll let you know what they say.”

“Jamie, I’m leaving here in a week regardless of what they say,” I tell him and disconnect the call.

“One week,” I say to myself. “One fucking week.”

When her nose isn’t buried in a book, or her fingers flying across a keyboard writing, she’s in the kitchen creating gourmet meals. You can find her, in four inch heels no less, in the car chauffeuring kids, or possibly with her husband scheduling his business trips. It’s a good thing her characters do what she says, because even her Labrador doesn’t listen to her…

Let Me Love You

Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Twenty-three year old Ren Haynes returns home after graduating college with two goals–start his engineering career and claim the heart of his parents’ thirty-one year old divorced neighbor, Stacey Williams.

Stacey is nursing her broken heart and shattered ego. Not only did her ex-husband have an affair, he got the woman pregnant. Picking up the pieces of her life isn’t easy, so when Ren taps into her need to feel desired again, she finds herself in a position she never imagined.

Can Ren help to rebuild her confidence and convince her that age is just a number?

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

Enjoyable older woman/neighbor romance from a new-to-me author. Ren has always had a bit of a crush on Stacey, but chalked it up to teenage hormones. When he comes back home after graduating college, however, and Stacey is now divorced, Ren sets out to show her that their age gap means nothing when it comes to what he feels in his heart.

After her husband left her for a younger model, Stacey is less confident about herself these days, and basks in Ren’s attention and affection. But when the initial glow wears off, she understandably starts to freak out about what his parents (who are friends of hers) will think. Can Ren convince Stacey that they are meant to be together?

The relationship between the characters is hot and sexy, and Let Me Love You is an enjoyable enough read. But I wish that there was more to the lead-up between Ren and Stacey. I felt like the reader was told about the connection they share more than I was shown it; that is a huge pet peeve of mine. But overall, this was rather quick May/December romance worth checking out.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Remarrying seems like the obvious answer, so I place an ad. I’m not asking for much. The ideal woman only needs to be smart, organized, pretty, and helpful—both in and out of bed. No romance, period. I never thought to look right in front of me…but it turns out that Nia Wright, my sexy, sassy assistant, just might be the perfect candidate.

After an unexpectedly hot night together, I’m ready to stop interviewing strangers and simply marry her. On paper, she ticks every box on my list. Best of all, she’s far too sensible to fall for me. I didn’t see the flaw in my logic until it was far too late. I never thought I’d lose my heart for the first time. And I definitely never imagined that she could consume me until I more than crave her. But she’s harboring a secret that could tear us apart—just as I’m finally putting myself together.

About Shayla

ShaylaBlack highres.jpgShayla Black is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than sixty novels. For nearly twenty years, she’s written contemporary, erotic, paranormal, and historical romances via traditional, independent, foreign, and audio publishers. Her books have sold millions of copies and been published in a dozen languages.
Raised an only child, Shayla occupied herself with lots of daydreaming, much to the chagrin of her teachers. In college, she found her love for reading and realized that she could have a career publishing the stories spinning in her imagination. Though she graduated with a degree in Marketing/Advertising and embarked on a stint in corporate America to pay the bills, her heart has always been with her characters. She’s thrilled that she’s been living her dream as a full-time author for the past eight years.
Shayla currently lives in North Texas with her wonderfully supportive husband, her daughter, and two spoiled tabbies. In her “free” time, she enjoys reality TV, reading, and listening to an eclectic blend of music.
