Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

The Successor is the first book in the Holbrook Cousins series, and is a decent kick-off to the series. Grant is a former Marine, carrying around a lot of baggage from his childhood and is now suffering from PTSD. He feels out of place amongst his family. Kate has had a string of bad relationships, so she’s hesitant to get involved with Grant, especially since she works for his father. But there is an instant attraction between the two, and they just can’t stay away from one another.

This story is good and The Successor is a relatively quick read, but I just didn’t connect to Grant and Kate. Moreso, Kate. She kept pulling Grant in, then pushing him away, and I kind of got annoyed with how wishy-washy she was.

“I can’t believe I struck out every single time,” Keaton says with a whine. “I tried all night and not one goddamn penis wanted me to touch it. God, my fucking feet hurt so bad.”

I loop my arm around her waist, partially to comfort her and partially to hold her up as we stagger down the sidewalk to her apartment. It’s almost two in the morning, and the streets are deserted. Only the predawn stars are watching over us.

Lucky Star takes the celebrity romance trope to a new level. Cameron is a struggling actor on the verge of getting his big break in the hottest new blockbuster. Sarah is his best friend who works for the producer, and suggests he audition for the movie. Sarah’s in love with Cameron, he loves her, and they are both hiding their feelings…. until tequila and the movie script get involved and they have sex. Then he panics and runs, making this entire relationship all sorts of messy.

Within hours of them finally confessing their feelings for one another, Cameron is forced into a showmance with his new co-star, and both he and Sarah are left reeling as a result of the impact it has on their relationship.

I loved how real Sarah is. She says what’s on her mind, shares her insecurities and just puts it all out there. And I loved how sweet, caring and spontaneous Cameron is, especially when it comes to his love for Sarah. After he mucks things up, he goes big to beg for her forgiveness.

The way this couple drifts apart as a result of the PR ploy and then fight their way back together gave me all the feels. They own up to their mistakes and lack of communication and vow to set things right. And they do.

Lucky Star is a gem of a best friend’s romance that I’ve had sitting on my kindle for a while now, and wish I’d gotten around to reading sooner!

I adored this book! Lauren Blakely at her best! The Real Deal is smart and funny, full of sexual tension and playful banter, has awesome supporting characters like a meddling mother, and the sweetest of HEAs!

April answers a Craigslist ad for a boyfriend-for-hire to be her buffer during a family reunion. From the minute April meets Theo beforehand, sparks are flying and this conman is worried that he’s going to be in trouble with this client. And he is so right!! As they embark on the reunion weekend, lines become so blurred between their fake relationship and what they are really feeling for one another.

I just wanted to give Theo a big hug! He was so torn up about wanting to come clean with April about his “acting” — what constitutes a lie and what is. Truth you haven’t shared yet? I get why he was so afraid to come clean with her once he started to fall for her. And I understand why she felt betrayed, but I am so glad she got over that quickly because I they were perfect together!
