Cover Reveal: Gravel Road, by Stephie Walls

Release Date: September 27, 2018

Cover Design: Wicked by Design

Model: Steve Kalfman

Synopsis

I fell in love with Austin before I even knew what the word meant.

Miranda was the only girl who ever had a chance at owning my heart.

Defined by the land we grew up on—ranches, pastures, lakes—Mason Belle, Texas, wrote our story. And then it tore out the pages.

Six years later, Miranda had managed to slip away again. But this time, I refused to let her run.

Excerpt

Miranda lifted her hand to tuck her hair behind her ear. Like a movie, a flashback of the past, a vision of eighteen-year-old Randi, blinked before me. I’d always found that habit seductive, primarily because she wasn’t conscious of the fact that she did it when she was nervous. I loved the innocence in her expression and the way her eyes almost cowered behind her lashes. It was pure and as close to angelic as Randi ever got.

It took effort to soften my tone. I ignored the bell that rang over the door. She was on the defensive. If I wanted to have a discussion, I’d have to make her believe she was safe. “Can we talk?”

Her pupils narrowed, though her expression remained flat. “About?”

I’d thought about this conversation more times than I could count, yet when the chance to have it arose, my mind went blank. I shrugged. “What have you been up to?”

She shook her head in disbelief. “Really? You have me alone in a corner, and that’s the question you want an answer to?”

No. It wasn’t even the tip of the iceberg. “It’s a good place to start.”

Miranda shifted in the seat, uncrossing her legs and crossing them again. She was thinner than she had been in high school. I hadn’t noticed it so much on the ranch, yet sitting across from her, it was quite obvious. “Okay… I moved to New York. I met Eason the day I got off the bus. He helped me get into school for paralegal work and hired me in his law firm. We’ve lived together since, and I still work at the practice.”

She’d summed up six years in a handful of meaningless sentences that told me nothing other than stats I could have found on Facebook if she used social media.

“Are you happy?” It came out before I realized what I’d said.

The question appeared to surprise her as much as it had me. “Sure. New York’s a great place to live.” There was no smile in her voice, nothing that indicated she loved life.

That wasn’t a ringing endorsement. Warning bells, sirens, whistles, they all went off in my head. For a girl who’d been with a man as long as Miranda had Eason, I expected more. He obviously defined her life if she lived with him and worked for him.

“Is Eason good to you?”

Her features scrunched, and that look was all Randi. The Randi I’d loved. The one who died the day that car crashed. “Of course.” She appeared offended, yet she didn’t defend him.

Miranda watched me intently, although she remained quiet. I hadn’t realized until that moment how desperate I was to hear the sound of her voice, to engage in a normal conversation. I wanted to forget the last six years and pretend like there’d never been an accident. I’d kill to see her tilt her head back in laughter or witness one genuine smile.

“I’m not going to bite you, Miranda. You can talk. We can catch up. That’s what friends do.” Friends. I hated that word. She’d never be a friend. We may never be anything more again, but I’d never place her in that category in my life.

“I don’t know what to say, Austin. You’ve made it pretty clear how you feel about me since I arrived at the ranch.”

I needed something to do with my hands. They shook beneath the table, and if I didn’t get my nerves under control, I’d start babbling. “I’m sorry.” I paused, and her facial muscles relaxed. “I wasn’t expecting to see you.” It was an excuse. “Not that anyone had to warn me.” And that sounded awful. “I didn’t recognize you.” That was the painful truth.

She wrapped her hands around her mug, yet she didn’t lift it. Her thumb traced circles on the ceramic. “I don’t look all that different.” It wasn’t just her appearance. “So, what was it then?”

“You cut your hair.” There were days I marveled at my conversational brilliance.

She grazed her fingertips over the ends self-consciously. “You don’t like it?”

I wasn’t sure why it mattered if I did or didn’t. “You always loved your hair. I’m just surprised.”

“Is that it?”

I couldn’t figure out how to get away from this. “I don’t know. You don’t sound like you, anymore. And you showed up in a limo for Christ’s sake. You looked like you stepped off the runway, not an airplane.” I didn’t mean to be harsh. “It caught me off guard.”

A tear trickled down her cheek. “If anyone had told me you worked at the ranch, I wouldn’t have come.”

My chest constricted painfully. All these years, I’d believed she hid from Jack. Now I had to wonder if it was me.

She swallowed hard and closed her eyes. When she opened them, any emotion that had surfaced had cleared. They were empty again, soulless. “I didn’t mean it the way you took it.”

“How’d you mean it?”

Charity came around with the coffee at the perfect moment for Miranda and the wrong one for me. It didn’t escape my attention, or Miranda’s for that matter, that Charity refused to look at her and only spoke to me. People in Mason Belle hurt for a long time over Miranda’s disappearance. And if they continued to treat her the way Charity and I had, they wouldn’t have to worry about her ever returning.

She waited for Charity to leave before she responded. “I owe you an explanation. You more than anyone.” There was a pause, and I was afraid if I filled the silence then she’d quit talking. “I never meant to hurt you.”

I ached, seeing her this way. Nothing about her had healed in New York. She’d withered into something unrecognizable. “What did he do?” I whispered.

“It doesn’t matter.”

But it did. Without regard for my actions, I reached out and placed my hand on top of hers. “You can always come home.” I didn’t have a clue where that had come from. Mason Belle would not open its arms to the princess who’d shunned them, not without a lot of explanation.

She snickered, and her shoulders dropped. She did not, however, remove her hand from underneath mine, and I took the chance to give her fingers a gentle squeeze.

“It’s not that easy, Austin.”

I kept my voice low. “Why not?”

“Sometimes you can’t come home.”

That was bullshit. It might be uncomfortable. People might expect apologies. Even still, she absolutely could make that choice, just like she’d made one to leave.

“Why? Because of some guy? Some job? A fancy town? You can leave every bit of that behind.”

She stared at me with wonder instead of gall.

“If you want to come back, you can. But it would take the gumption of the girl I knew, not the one who showed up in a Hummer with a man in a suit.”

As if I’d slapped her, the mention of Eason had her withdrawing her hand. “And just walk away from my life?”

“You’ve done it before.”

She flattened her lips and nodded defensively…slowly. “And there it is.”

“Damn, Randi. Come on. What do you expect?”

“Nothing. That’s why I’ve tried to keep my distance. You came looking for me, remember?”

“Your sister sent me.”

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a wad of cash. “Of course, she did. I should have known you’d never come on your own. God knows you never made any attempt to find me before, but Sarah waves her hand, and you’re on a mission.” She tossed a few dollars on the table and slid across the bench.

Shit. I pulled my wallet out and tossed a couple of bucks down. Miranda had made it to the front door and grasped the handle when Charity decided now was the time to chime in.

“You’re wastin’ your time, Austin. Let her go. She’s not worth it.” Disgust lifted her lip in a snarl, and I’d never hated the sound of a Southern twang until that moment.

“Ah, shut up, Charity.” I’d have to apologize for that later. Hopefully before Brock found me to turn my face into a punching bag for speaking to his wife that way.

Miranda had heard her and pushed open the door with all the strength she could muster. The bell rang wildly, and I took off after her.

“Miranda!”

The last thing either of us needed was another scene, especially in the middle of town. “What?” She spun and then screamed, “What do you want, Austin? To humiliate me? Are you out for blood? Tell me what you need so I can make it happen. I’ll do anything you ask. I just need this to end.” Tears ran down her cheeks, her shoulders shook, but she held her ground.

I didn’t have an answer, because I didn’t know.

“That’s what I thought,” she murmured in defeat.

After a few more tries, Emily managed to hit the board instead of the wall around it. When her dart landed in the circle closest to the bulls-eye, she squealed.

“I did it! Look, I hit the dartboard!”

To Phin’s shock, Emily threw herself into his arms, hugging him like he’d given her a car for her sixteenth birthday. Nonplussed but unwilling to let this moment pass, he hugged her back. She smelled amazing, and Phin wished he could tilt her head back and kiss her right then and there.

To his surprise, she did tilt her head back to look up at him. When she licked her lips, that movement shot straight to his groin. The noise of the dive bar faded away, and every thought except Emily being in his arms fled Phin’s mind.

He cupped her cheek. Her eyes widened.

And then somebody bumped into Phin, mumbling “sorry, man” as he passed by. The moment broken, Phin let Emily go.

What the hell was he doing, almost kissing his client in some dive bar? And when she was obviously tipsy?

“I should get you home,” he said. “It’s late.”

“Oh. Okay. Thanks.”

Phin told himself that Emily was silent on the ride to her apartment because she was tired, but he knew better. He almost apologized, but that would only make things worse. Because he didn’t want her to think he didn’t want her. He also didn’t want her to think he did want her.

What a mess he’d gotten himself into.

“This is it,” said Emily, pointing.

Phin parked on the street, squinting at the run-down building with trash scattered in front of it. Cats screeched nearby, while something that looked like a raccoon riffled through the bags of trash. A homeless man was curled up near the stairs to the building.

Emily lived here alone?

It’s none of your business. She’s a client.

“I’ll walk you inside,” he found himself saying.

He walked her to her door, one that was clean but worn like the rest of the complex. One of the numbers on Emily’s door was missing. Phin heard shouting in a nearby apartment, and then the sound of something breaking.

“Thank you for tonight,” said Emily. She jangled her keys, clearly agitated.

Phin put his hands in his pockets, mostly so he wouldn’t touch her again. “Of course. I’d do it the same for any woman.”

Emily’s face fell, and Phin immediately regretted his words.

“Well, good night.” Emily unlocked her door and was about to go inside when Phin stopped her.

“You can call me anytime you need me.” Why am I saying this? Suddenly, he didn’t care about the reasons why. “Are you sure you’ll be okay here?”

She blinked. “At my apartment? Yes.”

Phin wanted to offer to stay with her, to protect her, to keep her from any harm. It was a primal reaction, one he’d always considered ridiculous. But this woman turned him inside out.

He nodded stiffly. To his surprise, Emily reached out and touched his arm before clasping his hand.

“You’re a good guy, Mr. Younger. Better than any I’ve met in a long time.”

“Phin,” he said, his voice low.

“Phin, then.” Her voice was a thready whisper.

The clasp of their hands bolstered him. He moved his hand so it gripped her arm, and then she was in his arms again. She didn’t pull away, and for that, he thanked the universe.

Because he was going to kiss Emily Lassiter, and damn the consequences.

When his lips touched hers, she gasped, the sound quickly turning to a soft moan. That sound heated his blood as he kissed her. He reveled in the softness of her lips and the way she melted against him. She was all softness and light, and he wished he could keep her safe from everything in this life that could hurt her. He kissed her until she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back with an ardor only matched by his own.

Someone yelled, reminding Phin of where they were. He ended the kiss with reluctance, especially as he took in Emily’s red cheeks and lips.

The yelling brought clarity to his hazy mind. What was he doing, kissing his client in the middle of the night like this? Grimacing, disgusted with himself, he set her away from him through sheer force of will.

“I’ll talk to you later.” He turned before she could even reply.

He hated doing this to her, this hot-and-cold act. But he couldn’t let this happen again. His career was on the line. Not only that, but Emily’s brother’s life was on the line, too.

If Phin’s behavior were somehow made public, Phin could be removed from the case. And then what? Would Josh get remanded to adult court because no one else wanted to touch a case that was now tainted?

I need to let her go, Phin said over and over again as he drove home. No matter how much I don’t want to.

Cover Reveal: Fall, by Kristen Callihan

The first time I met Jax Blackwood things went a little sideways.

In my defense, I didn’t know he was Jax Blackwood—who expects a legendary rock star to be shopping for groceries? More importantly, a blizzard was coming and he was about to grab the last carton of mint-chocolate chip.

Still, I might have walked away, but then he smugly dared me to try and take the coveted ice cream. So I kissed him. And distracted that mint-chip right out of his hands.

Okay, it was a dirty move, but desperate times and all that. Besides, I never expected he’d be my new neighbor.

An annoying neighbor who takes great pleasure in reminding me that I owe him ice cream but would happily accept more kisses as payment. An irresistible neighbor who keeps me up while playing guitar naked–spectacularly naked–in his living room.

Clearly, avoidance is key. Except nothing about Jax is easy to ignore—not the way he makes me laugh, or that his particular brand of darkness matches mine, or how one look from him melts me faster than butter under a hot sun.

Neither of us believes in love or forever. Yet we’re quickly becoming each other’s addiction. But we could be more. We could be everything.

All we have to do is trust enough to fall.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: PS I Miss You, by Winter Renshaw

Melrose,

The first time I met you, you were a stranger. The second time, you were my roommate. The third time, you made it clear you were about to become the biggest thorn my side had ever known.

You sing way too loud in the shower and use all the hot water.

You’re bossy as hell.

You make my life all kinds of complicated.

But no matter how hard I try, I can’t stop thinking about you.

And truthfully … I can’t stop wanting you.

I was going to tell you this. I was going to sit you down, swallow my pride, hang up my noncommittal ways and show you a side of me you nor anyone else has ever seen before … but then you dropped a game-changing bombshell; a confession so nuclear it stopped me in my tracks.

How I didn’t see this coming, I’ll never know.

Sutter

P.S. I miss you.

I’m standing outside Melrose’s door, two sweaty beer bottles under one arm as I knock.
“Go away, Sutter,” she calls, voice stuffy.
I knock again.
“Go. Away,” she says.
A third knock should do it. A fourth if I must. I’m not going anywhere tonight.
Seconds later, the door swings open with a hard pull and Melrose’s frown neutralizes when she sees the drinks in my hand.
“What’s this?” she asks.
“You look like you had a rough night.” I hand hers over, but she doesn’t accept it right away.
Her tired stare rests on my outstretched hand. “Why are you being so nice to me?”
“Weirding you out too, huh?”
I manage to get the smallest smile out of her. I think. It’s gone before I can be sure.
Finally taking my generous gift, Melrose raises her brows and takes a swig. “Guess not.”
“You want to talk about it?” I ask, hooking my hand behind my neck. I’m terrible at these kinds of things and I don’t like to talk for the sake of talking, but I’ve come this far.
“Is your girlfriend gone?” She ignores my question.
“Acquaintance. And yeah. I sent her home.”
“You did?” Her forehead crinkles, like she doesn’t believe it.
I nod. And I don’t believe it myself. I’ve never put sex on the back burner so I could comfort some crying chick.
“I need to let Murphy out.” Melrose scoops the wrinkly beast into her arms and treks downstairs, cutting through the living room and kitchen to get to the backyard.
I follow, stepping out to the patio and sliding the door closed behind me. Murphy trots off, disappearing somewhere in the dark yard, and Melrose takes a seat on one of the steps. The moonlight makes her shine almost, painting a glow onto her bronzed skin and silky hair.
“So … you’re okay then?” I ask, picking at the label on my bottle. It occurs to me that I still haven’t thanked her for folding my shirts the other day, but this doesn’t feel like the right time.
“You don’t have to do this,” she says.
“Do what?”
“Feel sorry for me,” she says, turning and glancing up. “I don’t need your pity.”
“I don’t feel sorry for you. I don’t even know what happened,” I say. “But judging by the way you were dressed when you came home … I’m thinking it had to do with some douche.”
“You were right, Sutter.” She picks at the label on her bottle. “I went out with Robert McCauley tonight.”
My chest tightens. I already know where this is going.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

This was a cute follow-up to P.S. I Hate You, but i just didn’t fall for Melrose and Sutter the way I did for her cousin, Maritza and Isaiah.

Mel has been in love with her childhood friend Nick forever, and when he needs someone to sublet his place, she steps up to do him a favor… but finds herself sharing a house with the rudest man she’s ever met.

Sutter is all kinds of growly and surly, but once his backstory is told, so many pieces clicked into place. Melrose and Sutter both have preconceived notions about the other, which made this an enjoyable enemies-to-lovers romance as they learn how wrong they are.

This book is a quick and easy read, and I really liked the connection between Mel and Sutter, and the small catch-up with Maritza and Isaiah.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Wyatt

She’s the last thing that I expected. But I’m drawn to her.

When she stepped onto my field with her long sexy legs, arms covered in tiny geometric tattoos, dark hair and her perfect kissable lips—she stoked a fire inside me. I never dreamed that I’d feel that spark again.

Hannah Richman understands my anguish and emotional turmoil, because she’s been through the same hell.

Wanting her is taboo—forbidden. She’s the mother of one of my students.

No matter how much I crave her . . . there’s no way I can have her, it would be inappropriate.

We’re about to redefine that word.

Excerpt

My heart thundered in my chest as if a herd of wild horses were stampeding through it. I pulled the pen and notepad from my apron pocket averting my gaze from the smolder in Wyatt Hamilton’s green eyes. “I see you got your coffee, now what can I get you to eat?”

Smirking, he leaned back into the booth, drawing his arm across the back. “What no greeting?”

This man did strange things to me. I tapped my pen to the notepad, heat rolling down my spine like lava. “Hello, Mister Hamilton. Now can I get your order, please?”

His eyes darted to my nametag. “I’d like the Denver omelet with toasted sourdough and a side of Mel’s famous hash browns, Hannah.”

I cleared my throat. “Oh, sorry, we don’t serve omelets after eleven.”

His eyebrows shot up. “What do you mean? I thought Mel’s served omelets until four in the afternoon.”

“Um, they used to, but that changed when the menu did a few months back.”

“Well, tell Goldie the omelet is for me,” he said, tapping his finger to the table. “I’m sure that she’d be happy to accommodate me this morning.”

This guy, I didn’t have time for his jokes. “Yeah, I’ll get right on that and tell a woman who’s been on her feet since four a.m. to prepare an omelet just for you. Now, tell me what you really want because I have a table ready to pay.”

He narrowed his eyes, his dark brows pinching together. “I already told you my order. Goldie will bend the rules for me, I’m her favorite customer—a regular.”

“You’re incredible,” I mumbled. What I really wanted to say was that he was arrogant.

“Thank you, I see that you’ve been working your social skills.”

“That wasn’t a compliment.” I leaned down so that we were face to face. “I’m sure that Goldie doesn’t make the rules so that you can break them. If you really wanted an omelet you would have been here before eleven. If you were a regular, you’d have known about the menu change and we wouldn’t be in this current predicament. You can either place a different order or you can sit here and starve.”

Wyatt’s eyes flared and turned dark. Yeah, I told him and it served him right. I knew who he was, and after my son told me he was a big deal I Googled him. Wyatt Hamilton, the former NFL player, quarterback—the golden god of Indianapolis. He’d taken the team to the Super Bowl and won the town’s second title and then he left the sport. Under tragic circumstances this man prevailed. He was a champion, but right now he was acting like an entitled asshole.

“Everything okay here?” Goldie asked, wiping her hands on a red towel.

Wyatt’s eyes never left mine. “It’s all good. Hannah was telling me about the menu change, but she insisted I order an omelet even if she had to make it herself.”

I clamped my teeth together, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing the shock I felt inside painted on my face. Instead, I carefully positioned my middle finger against the back of my notepad sending him a signal.

“Oh, that was so nice of you to offer, Hannah,” Goldie said, lopping her red towel through her apron string. “I think I can make that omelet happen for you, Wyatt.”

After scratching down his order, I tore at my notepad and handed the paper to Goldie. The tight-lipped smile painted across his face irritated me. Wyatt Hamilton was a guy who expected everything to go his way.

Smug bastard.

EXCERPT:

When I got out of the shower, I took my time brushing out my hair. Then I examined my knee, determined it was nothing worse than a bruise, pulled on my robe, and walked out to find Vincent sitting on the couch, looking like he wanted to murder me. My gaze swung from him to the door, which was closed, and the chain lying broken on the carpet.

“You broke in?”

“I used my key. Had to break the chain, though.”

“You have a key to my apartment?”

Vincent stood and stalked toward me. I stumbled back, and he caught me by the front of my robe, gripping it in his hand.

“You think this is a fucking joke?” He growled the question.

“No.”

“Then what? You like playing games?”

“I’m not playing games.” I tried to pull away, but he only tightened his hold.

“Then what is your fucking problem? I’m trying to protect you, and you lock me out in the hallway?”

“You’re my problem. I was scared, and when I tried to talk to you, you acted like I wasn’t even in the room. If I’m going to feel like I’m alone, I might as well be alone.”

Vincent looked at me as though he were seeing me for the first time today. We were both worked up, breathing hard, our faces only inches apart. I could feel his warm breath on my skin, and as he stared at me, the fire in his eyes flickered into something else. Remorse. Understanding.

“You’re not alone,” he said, his eyes holding me there, pinning me in place just as firmly as his hand gripping my robe.

As my anger faded, I became all too aware of his closeness. I could feel the heat coming off his body and smell the clean scent of his skin. His eyes searched mine, moving back and forth with a sheen of confusion, like he was caught up in a spell and didn’t know how to break it.

Then he leaned in closer, and my breathing hitched. I looked at his lips, so full and soft. When he licked them, my heart quivered in my chest. He wanted to kiss me. I felt it too strongly to be wrong. I wanted to kiss him too, and I longed for him to touch me.

His hand on my robe was so close to my skin. He only had to move the slightest bit and his fingers would brush the top of my breast. I imagined his hands on me, smoothing over my skin, and my core pulsed with desire. He moved even closer and I pulled in a quick breath of anticipation, but then his grip loosened and the heat coming off him disappeared.
