Blurb:
“Tell me a happy something, Sutton.”

I was only seven the first time Grady Bowen whispered those words to me. Cloaked by the black sky under a blanket of stars, it was easy to get lost. He didn’t have any good memories of his own, and needed to borrow mine. I’d willingly give him anything.

Being infatuated with that boy was a beautiful curse. What could have been special didn’t get the chance to bloom. He’d never see me as more than his best friend’s kid sister. That was a hard lesson to learn, but not the most difficult.

Grady had always been struggling against the odds. Eventually he quit fighting and let his family’s reputation own him. Try as I might, those influences were beyond my reach.

He didn’t mean to break my heart. Or maybe he did. I shouldn’t have made it so easy for him. Either way, our wrongs against each other carved new lines between us.

I went four years without seeing Grady—each one more painful than the last. That distance did nothing to dull my feelings toward him. But things are different now. Most noticeably is Grady. I barely recognize this man he’s become. And that’s the way he intends to keep it. Not that it really matters.

Grady Bowen stopped being my happy something long ago.

Excerpt:
I take a closer inspection of this swoony charmer. Not an ounce of deceit registers in his expression. There’s no stony edge blocking his emerald stare. His ironclad guard is nonexistent. Zero inhibitions block the sliver of space between us. Everything is on display for me to see. I should be the one to stop this. He’s obviously not in his normal state and under the influence of hefty narcotics.

Who the hell am I kidding? Basking in a rare smile from Grady is a gift I won’t take for granted. Appreciating from a safe distance will be the true challenge. I test my willpower by trying to evade the sneaky fingers inching up my thigh. But our skin is magnetized and moving is impossible. The golden specks in his eyes glitter at my failed attempt. Yep, he’s onto me. I’m a goner.

As if there was another option.

The itch to comb through his shaggy hair tickles my fingertips. Would he lean into my embrace if I cupped his jaw? The tiniest bit of resolve stops me from acting on those impulses. But it doesn’t stop my brain from working overtime.

I wonder if anyone else has seen this side of him. The romantic in me wants to believe I’m the first, and hopefully only. I shove the fanciful notion aside. “Well, you sure seem to be in a great mood.”

That luscious bottom lip gets trapped between his teeth. I’d love to take a bite. As if hearing my thoughts, Grady rolls toward me. “Abso-fucking-lutely. Why wouldn’t I be? I have a gorgeous woman within reach, ready to take care of my aches and pains.”

This time I really do choke on my tongue. “W-what?”

The hand he has on my leg drifts higher. “You sound shocked, Sutt.”

How could I not be? “That’s an understatement.”

“Stay with me,” Grady croons.

“For the night?”

“For always.” His gaze is smoldering. Damn, he’s sexy. And irresistible. I’m liable to straddle his lap and offer him everything. But the chains of our past hold me hostage. I can’t fall victim so easily.

“Why now, Gray?” Whatever painkillers he’s on are proving to be an effective truth serum. I might as well use it to my advantage.

His blink is slow. “I miss the peace, Sutt. My slice of goodness.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I really loved this book! Grady and Sutton gave me all the feels!

There was always a special connection between Sutton and Grady. But he felt he wasn’t good enough for her, and turned her down the night before she left for college. They barely spoke the next four years, but they are forced to cross paths when she moves back home. And then a horrible bear-death experience makes Grady realize that he’s wasted enough time when it comes to the one person who makes him happy.

I wish that there were some flashbacks or something to the day that Grady first showed up as a kid to Sutton’s house. I would love to read that pivotal scene. But otherwise, HR does a great job of describing the hardships Grady has gone through. He’s so broken and beaten down. But Sutton is his one ray of light, even when he doesn’t want to admit it.

It’s pretty early on in the book when Grady gives in, so their will-they-or-won’t-they is not drawn out. They fall into a shared life easy as pie, but it’s the obstacle of her brother and a frame job that still threatens to tear them apart. But will Grady trust in Sutton’s love enough?

This story was fantastic. The characters are great, nicely written and the story is paced perfectly. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

We walk for what
feels like forever until I see a large sycamore tree in the middle of a field
of purple flowers. It seems out of place, yet perfectly set at the same time.
Kaiden walks over to
it and sits down, leaning his back against the thick trunk. He seems at peace,
which is a new look for him. His body is eased as he stretches his long legs
out without a care in the world.
I stare. Not just at
him, but at the tree. It’s huge with its long branches and bright green leaves
transitioning into yellow and orange and red that give the space a beautiful
kind of life. Lo would have loved this spot. She would have dragged me out and
stayed here until Mama called our names in frantic worry. Lo always wanted to
be free, out in the open, surrounded by trees and plants and animals.
Suddenly, the tears
that had finally stopped falling on the way over begin building again until
everything blurs. Bottom lip trembling, I hear Kaiden’s heavy sigh.
“What’s wrong now?”
I answer silently
what my emotions won’t let me speak aloud.
Lo was buried under a sycamore tree.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Ugly Cry Stars

Holy moly. I am wrecked. Emery and Kaiden have a heartbreaking story, but it is full of learning to live life every moment that you have.

I knew from the blurb that Emery was ill, but I wasn’t prepared for how much this book wrecked me. Me and Kaiden are step siblings, but they have such an honest friendship first and foremost. He’s got burdens to carry as well, and they really do grow. To depend on one another in a most magnificent way.

This book is one of those that works its way under your skin, the couple into your heart, and you will never forget them. A definite one for the reread often shelf!

Blurb:
From bestselling author, Dr. Rebecca Sharp, comes an emotional, small-town romance with a twist…

For years, I was close enough to fame to touch it. Taste it. Drink it.
Until one more drink became my answer to everything.
Until one night I made a mistake which couldn’t be undone.

So, I cut all ties to my former life and the addiction that destroyed it. And I left in search of redemption on the other side of the country.
After months building a new future, I thought my past had stayed put.
Until I opened my front door to find she’d followed me.

Taylor Hastings. My sister’s best friend.
And the good girl I’d never been good enough for.
Not then. Not now. Not ever.

One glance at Taylor’s face told me she’d come searching for a safe haven. One glance at the swell of her stomach told me she hadn’t come alone.

I didn’t hesitate to offer her my help and my home because looking out for her was the right thing to do…
Even if the way I wanted her would always be wrong.

So, I kept my distance. And Taylor kept her secrets.
Until one kiss changed everything.
Until one kiss made me realize it wasn’t our first.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Having not read Resurrection, I knew nothing going into Redemption about Ash and Taylor. So I felt that the prologue kind of started in the middle of a story, but I realize now that the initial exchange between Ash and Taylor was a spinoff of something that started in the previous book. Beyond that, I didn’t feel that I was missing pieces of Ashton’s story, but I am curious to see what his behavior is like in Resurrection.

But back to Redemption… this book was a great tale of a guy whose life crashed and burned. Ash knew that he needed help for his drinking problem, and he got it. Miles away from the situation that caused him to spin out of control to begin with. Months later, Taylor tracks him down in the small coastal town where he’s trying to rebuild his life, and suddenly, Ash has to face demons that he wasn’t quite ready to face yet. The fact that Taylor is pregnant gives Ash a reason to step up and help and protect his sister’s best friend, who seems to be all alone. He handles the situation with grace and strength, continuing to rebuild his life and try not to feel all the things he’s feeling for a woman who he believes is too innocent and pure and good for him.

I loved Ash… Taylor, not so much. I get why she didn’t tell Ash at first about the baby, but the more time that went on, the less I liked her. She waited far too long to tell him something that he had every right to know. And she had no good reason for neglecting to tell him. I felt horrible for Ash when he pieced it all together. He was honest with her about his addiction and how he was trying to change his life, and she kept something huge from him. They were professing their love for one another, but she was lying to him by omission.

In the end, it all works out, because there’s an accident that makes Ash realize that even though Taylor betrayed him with her lies, she’s still the woman he wants to spend his life with. A nice, neat bow. But the fact that she lied to him in the first place is what kept me from giving Redemption a full 5 stars.

Still, this book is a lovely work of trial and error, owning your past mistakes and trying to make your life better. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Too Good At Goodbyes, by R.C. Boldt

Title: Too Good at Goodbyes
Author: RC Boldt
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: October 29, 2019
Blurb
First Top 40 hit at age seventeen? My first
tabloid breakup scandal quickly followed.
Earned my first Grammy? Discovered Mommy Dearest
was embezzling my money.
Landed a leading role in a movie? My fiancé
called off our engagement the next day.
I might have a multi-million-dollar recording contract, a
sold-out world tour, and more money in the bank than I ever imagined, but every
time I hit a milestone in my career, my personal life suffers.
Then in steps my new bodyguard, rugged and with a past I
connect with. The closer we get, the more powerful my feelings grow,
complicating our professional relationship.
I thought Kane would be different. I hoped he’d be the one
man to stand by my side, undaunted by the fame and attention that trails
me.
The press calls me the “Ice Princess of Pop” because of my
unyielding façade throughout heartbreak and betrayal. Perhaps it’s time to show
them the real me.
With every syllable, I pour out my emotions and allow them
to puddle, forming lyrics from my soul’s breath. And with each word, my broken
heart cries out for Kane, begging him to help me break this pattern.
To help me stop being so damn good at goodbyes.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

I’ve read several other RC Boldt books and loved them. Kane appeared briefly in a few, so I was excited to see him get his own story. And while I loved everything about him — I adore an alpha hero with a vulnerable side, and Kane wears his heartbreak like an ugly badge — I just didn’t like him and Simone.

And I’m not even sure why. The first few chapters dragged for me, which is usually a sign that the rest of the book will as well. And again, I liked Kane from the start. But I just didn’t connect with Simone, and as a result wasn’t all that invested.

The story gives an interesting look at the other side of celebrity: the dirty, lonely side that the general public doesn’t get to see amongst the glitz and glamour. I’ll come back to this book again at some point, I’m sure, and hopefully give it another go. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

SIMONE
Present Day
The Super Bowl Halftime Performance
Hard Rock Stadium
Miami Gardens, Florida
Facing what’s estimated to be over sixty-seven thousand
people with my favorite guitar strapped snug against me, I prepare to sing my
final song.
Standing up here in front of thousands of fans is second
nature. I performed in countless dive bars before breaking onto the scene and
securing my first record deal, then moving on to sold-out world tours. Which
means I shouldn’t have sweaty palms like a preteen working up the nerve to talk
to her crush.
My heart shouldn’t be racing like a horse competing in the
Kentucky Derby.
My stomach shouldn’t churn as though I’ve eaten ceviche from
a questionable food truck.
Tremors shouldn’t affect my hands like a virgin embarking on
their deflowering.
None of this should be afflicting me. But it is.
Because of him.
Because of the current state of my heart.
But this is how I deal with heartache. With tragedy. With…life.
“This is a little different, and I hope you like it,” I rasp
into the mic. Noise from the cheering fans is deafening, and like every time I
perform, the surreal quality never quite fades.
Tonight marks the first time I’ll share a song I wrote about
someone who eviscerated my heart entirely. My other relationships—and
subsequent failures—pale in comparison.
It’s no secret that love and broken hearts inspire great
songwriting. With regard to the latter, it’s never hard to find someone
mourning an unrequited love, suffering heartache, or wishing they’d find their
own glorified everlasting love.
But have you noticed when male musicians write about it,
they’re never on the receiving end of the snide, sarcastic comments of, “Oh,
poor thing. He’s rich and famous and can’t find love. Boo-freaking-hoo.”?
Yet when I write lyrics that are the closest thing to
ripping out my heart and putting it on display for the world, I receive the
“She’s probably selfish and put her career first” or “She probably cheated, and
now she’s regretting it” or “Mm. So sad. The Ice Princess of Pop is
heartbroken.”
My response? Fuck that noise. I’m writing from my heart and
soul, regardless of how damaged they might be at any given time. And as long as
my fans continue to support me, I’m going to keep on keepin’ on.
“I’d like to dedicate this song to a special person.” I duck
my chin, willing myself to maintain composure. “It’s called ‘Embers.’”
Once I strum the first note on my guitar, everything around
me fades. My voice emerges from the shards scattered within my chest where my
working heart once was.
When I play that final chord, I see tears streaming down the
faces of the fans in the front rows. And yet again, I’m reminded of something
all too easily forgotten. That there are others who can relate to lyrics
written from my soul’s breath.
Because in heartache, we’re never truly alone.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Kiss Me Again, by Emma Hart

KMA-BANNER-LIVE

WANTED: ROOMMATE. Must be tidy, polite, and absolutely not my brother’s hot as sin best friend.

Kiss Me Again, an all-new hilarious brother’s best friend standalone romance from New York Times bestselling author Emma Hart is available now!

KISSMEAGAIN

I have no idea why I said yes.

Maybe I’d had one too many wines. Maybe I’d done it accidentally. Maybe I’d been sleep-texting.

One thing I know for sure is this: I absolutely do not want Ethan Hawkins in my apartment, up in my business, taking over my space.

Yet he’s here. Moving his stuff into my spare bedroom. Sending a wave of panty-melting, musky man-scent my way every time he walks past me.

Here’s the thing.

We don’t get along—at all. We never have, and I don’t think we’re going to start now that we’re under one roof.

There’s also that little issue where I’m kinda, sorta, totally in love with him…

Uh-oh.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Holy moly, these two bicker like crazy! Ava and Ethan are the best kind of enemies-to-lovers story, because they don’t really hate one another. Far from it, actually. It’s just easier to hide the feelings they feel for someone who is supposed to be off-limits behind snarky one-liners.

The game of one-upmanship was quite funny. Salt in the sugar jar, stealing one sock from all of her pairs… it all made for a fabulously funny war between these roommates. And I loved how their true, genuine feelings came through via text message, when Ava and Ethan weren’t looking at each other face to face. There was something very vulnerable in their exchanges, and I couldn’t wait for them to give in to their feelings.

Yet as much as they thought the other was off-limits out of respect to Ava’s brother, Leo plays a big part in she and Ethan ultimately confessing how they really feel for one another. Kiss Me Again is a thoroughly enjoyable addition to Emma Hart’s Kiss Me series. As with the other books in the series, this one comes with an outrageous pet — a hedgehog named Mr. Prickles. Even though the three best friends (Halley, Reagan and Ava) have found love, I would love to see Leo get his own book! I’d even pay good money for Boris the racoon, Poosh the chihuahua and Mr. Prickles to have a book!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt

I shoved the front door open and set my gaze on Ethan on the sofa. “If you’re going to lie to me about living here, we’re going to have to set some hard and fast rules. The first one: the stinky, spiky pig lives in your bedroom.”

He peered over at me, one hand in a bag of cheese Doritos and the other tickling the hedgehog who was now lying on his chest.

It was quite the sight.

“How do you know he stinks?” he asked, licking his fingers and cradling the animal before he put the chip packet on the coffee table.

“I Googled. They need cleaning every day. I’m not doing it, and neither am I living in a smell of tiny animal who should be wild.”

“He’s a pygmy hedgehog. He’s bred to be domesticated.”

“His spiky bits could be made out of solid gold and I wouldn’t give a shit.” I put my purse on the island and looked at him. “You can send me Google links to them if it pleases His Highness, but my stance won’t change. That animal is not living in my living room, and I’d rather you didn’t snuggle with him on the sofa.”

“It’s ironic,” Ethan mused. “I have a hedgehog on my chest, and you’re still the prickliest thing in this apartment.”

“If I wasn’t staunchly against animal cruelty, I’d throw a saucepan at you.”

“You can still hit me over the head with it.”

“I was talking about you, not the hedgehog, you pig.”

“May I say that you are an absolute fucking delight, Ava. I can’t imagine why you’re still single.”

“Probably the same reason you are. The asshole gene is strong as fuck and not all that attractive.”

Just Ten Seconds
That’s all it took for my life to change forever.
I left my posh life in Manhattan and escaped to the Hudson Valley in hopes of a fresh start. It wasn’t until I happened upon a bereavement group when I finally found a place I felt understood. I told them my husband was dead when, really, I was the one who had died inside. It was also where I saw the smoldering gaze of Dean Delgado, the single father whom I’d helped just days before.

Just Ten Seconds
That’s all he wishes he had with his late wife.
Despite Dean’s widowed status, he has a robust thirst for life. He’s a protector and a giver. A man who fixes things with his hands, is devoted to his child, and wants to spend his days with me. I try to avoid him, knowing a woman with my past has no business being in this man’s life. With every run-in, he makes me laugh. With every touch, he ignites me. And with every second, he makes me feel like myself again.

Just Ten Seconds
That’s all it took for me to fall in love with Dean Delgado.
I’m in too deep and my secrets are about to be exposed. I only hope he can forgive me for the lies I never meant to tell.

3.png

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

It’s taken me a few days to put together my thoughts about Just Ten Seconds. This book was truly eye-opening. You go through the ins and outs of life, never really thinking about how in just ten seconds, your life can change forever. For the better or the worse.

I loved everything about Dean and Mara. I loved how Mara was trying to put her life back together, but couldn’t get past the life-altering event with her ex-husband. The second that she met Dean and his daughter, Amanda, it was like the light was brought back into Mara’s world. For Dean, it was the same way. He was trying so hard to be a good father for Amanda, but he was just so lonely. Until the second that he meets Mara.

It’s a beautiful story as these two mourn their respective pasts and open up to one another and find love again. But in just ten seconds, another truth rips them apart. Will another ten seconds piece them back together again?

This story was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

This book was a miss for me. The cover is stunning, I fell in love with the blurb, and I really liked Price. But I just did not connect with Emerson as a heroine, and I struggled with the entire book as a result. I found myself not caring about her journey to find her mother because I thought she was kind of bratty and selfish. Price, however, had that wholesome country boy air about him, and I found him to be quite the charmer as he reluctantly went along with the life his rich dad wanted for him.

The story itself is a sweet instalove tale, if that’s your jam. Emerson and Price are both lost souls and floundering without a purpose until they find their match in one another. Unfortunately for me, I just didn’t feel the spark between the characters.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt

Slouched in the back booth of one of those froufrou café places a little later, I pulled out a book and bit into my egg and turkey bacon on an English muffin.

Yes, you heard me right. 1. Egg. 2. Turkey bacon. 3. English muffin.

It was like one of those riddles on the SAT—which, by the way, I wished I hadn’t taken on a whim in high school, because it made this whole NYC bullshit that much easier.

Which two of the above three things does not belong?

If you answered numbers two and three, you win. Ding, ding, ding! Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

Who the fuck ate turkey bacon? Not a soul where I came from. And an English muffin was a poor excuse for a biscuit.

Just as I sank my teeth into the last bite of nourishment—because turkey bacon couldn’t possibly be classified as delicious—someone took the table next to me.

Not one for coffee-shop talk, I took a swig of my OJ and lowered my face deeper into my book.

Cannery Row? We read that in high school,” a female voice said, interrupting my quiet time.

“Hmm.” I nodded without looking up, desperately trying to maintain invisible boundaries.

The smell of fresh coffee filled my nostrils, making me think of my mom. She loved her morning coffee. Every day, she made a big pot and drink her first mug on the wraparound porch, sometimes wrapped in a flannel blanket.

“You okay?” Another interruption.

Looking up, I found the black-haired beauty who’d run into me earlier. “Yeah, why?” Slapping my worn book on the table, I suddenly had beef with the pixie extrovert.

“You were reading, and all of a sudden looked really sad. Sorry, I didn’t mean to pry. It’s just . . .”

I swallowed, wondering how the hell I looked sad, and then I remembered I was thinking of my mom. So I miss her. I’m no less of a man. It doesn’t make me a mama’s boy.

“I’m cool,” I said, rather than explaining the truth.

“We just saw each other.” She paused, obviously wanting to chat more, and I nodded.

“You go to school here?” I finally asked.

“No. It’s nice, though. I was just looking for someone in that building. Didn’t find her.” She whispered the last part to herself. Only listless for a second, she brightened back up. “Are you a grad student?”

“Ha,” I barked. “What? I look too old to play the part of undergrad?”

I was on the bench seat of my booth, my feet kicked out in front of me; she sat opposite me, on the chair side of her table. I wondered if her feet even touched the floor. Compared to my six-foot-two-inch frame, she’d barely hit my chest when we collided earlier.

“Um . . .” She looked away, pink rising in her cheeks.

Leaning forward, I ran my palm over my scruff, trying to remember when I last shaved. “Returning adult student is what I think they call it. School wasn’t really in my cards before, and now it is. So here I am.”

Sitting quietly, she didn’t respond, just raised her brows as if waiting for more of an explanation.

I didn’t give her anything more. My story wasn’t all that interesting, anyway.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Unspoken Words, by Shari J. Ryan

Release Date: October 16, 2019

Cover Design: MadHat Designs

Synopsis

“Women and children to the right. Men, to the left,” I once said.

From 1942 to 1944 I was what some called a Jew killer. Though, I have never hurt a soul, I was responsible for separating Jewish families, ensuring they would never see each other again. Those who were sick, were sent to their death … by me because I was forced to follow the enemy. The war stole my right of beliefs, my goals for a future, my left arm, and the love of my life.

I saved Amelia …

… then I lost her.

And after more than seventy years, I’m told she’s alive and asking for me.

Will love be enough to overcome the silence of more than seven decades?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I have read all three books in this series (though I’m not sure “series” is the right word), and Shari Ryan blew me away each time. This is not your standard fare romance, but there is a forbidden romance at the heart of the tale. Unspoken Words is an emotional journey of a young man and the choices that were made for him… and how he essentially turned his back on everything that he was supposed to be, all for the love of a girl he never should have felt anything for.

It’s a powerful masterpiece that spans decades, and even though it’s a work of fiction, it gave me a glimpse inside a world I’d only ever read about in history books. Seeing Nazi Germany through Charlie’s eyes was both amazing and horrific at the same time. The guilt he carries is immense: does he deserve to love, after all that he stood by? He never killed himself, but his people did. Was he any better?

The ray of sunlight that Amelia brought into his life — that he then carried for more than 70 years — is unlike anything I’ve ever read in a book before.

Read these books. They are not light and fluffy romances, but emotional and thought-provoking and pretty damn amazing.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Helena Hunting is the hockey romance queen, and a Lie For A Lie is a spin-off of her popular Pucked series.. Rookie escapes to the Alaskan wilderness to find some peace and quiet… and ends up having a steamy, whirlwind romance with Lainey. He doesn’t exactly tell her the truth about who he is… and when they are unexpectedly separated, he has no way to contact her and is left wondering, what if?

A chance meeting a year or so later brings them face to face again, and this time Lainey is the one hiding something. (I figured it out fairly early on.) While the first part of their relationship took place in a bubble, how will they deal with real-life intrusions? Are their different lifestyles too much to make their relationship work? It’s a nice story arc as Rookie and Lainey try to navigate the chaos.

I received an advanced copy via Montlake Romance and NetGalley and voluntarily left a review.

I stuff my earbuds in and cue up a movie on my entertainment console. After the last flight, I deserve three hours of brain candy.

Just as I settle on an action flick, a body lands in my lap. At first, I think I’m being accosted—yet again. It’s not unusual for women to literally throw themselves at me. Typically I’m not on a plane, though, but considering my last flight I shouldn’t be surprised by anything right now. “What the—”

“I’m so sorry!” says the voice attached to the body in my lap. She scrambles to right herself but jerks back, gagging, her tidal wave of silky, dark hair slapping me in the face. It smells like mint and cucumber, which would be nice if it weren’t in my mouth.

She grabs my shirt with one hand and catches my earbuds, yanking them free. The other hand curls under the fabric wrapped tightly around her throat. She’s sprawled across my lap, legs hanging over the armrest, face level with mine. She’s totally blocking the aisle, making it impossible for anyone to get by and creating quite the spectacle. “My scarf is caught,” she rasps. “Oh my God. I’m choking myself. I’m so sorry. This is so embarrassing.” The more she struggles, the more the scarf tightens, which in turn causes her to flail.

I slide a supporting arm behind her. “Stay still for a sec.”

She freezes, still gripping my shirt, eyes wide with panic. I turn my head to the side and lean forward. Her lips connect with my cheek.

“Oh!” She tries to turn away, but she really is stuck, so her nose ends up in my ear and her lips are still pressed against my jaw.

“Just give me a few more seconds, and you’ll be free.” She exhales heavily against my jaw, warm breath making my skin prickle. I lift her carry-on and use my foot to pull the scarf free from the wheel.

She loosens the fabric around her throat, dragging in a long, deep breath. “Thank you. So much. Choking to death on an attractive man’s lap really isn’t the way I wanted to go.” She squeezes her eyes shut and pushes to a stand. “I’m so sorry.”

She keeps her gaze averted as she gathers up the scarf that never seems to end. It gives me time to check her out. Well, shit. This woman is hot. Like Pour a gallon of gasoline on me and light me on fire hot. She has long dark hair, a shade of brown so deep it’s nearly black. Her eyes are the color of coffee or chocolate—something with caffeine in it. Something that would amp me up. And her face . . . daaaaamn. High cheekbones, full lips, a dainty nose, arched brows, thick lashes.

I take in the rest of the package, which gives me pause because her outfit is just . . . out there. She’s wearing a full-on parka, hiding her figure, but based on her legs I’m thinking she’s probably slender. That’s a guess, though, with all the layers she has going on. And that scarf has to be a mile long with how many times she winds it around her neck, hence the near strangulation.

Her little wardrobe malfunction has resulted in a line of people waiting to board, so she rushes down the aisle, throwing another “So sorry” over her shoulder as she disappears into coach.

I’m almost disappointed. Almost, but not quite. I plug my earbuds back in and veg out to movies for the next three hours.

Holidate by Monica Murphy

Release Date: October 15, 2019

Holidate AMAZON.jpg

Holidate, an all-new standalone contemporary holiday romance by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Monica Murphy.

Candice Gaines loves Christmas. Not only does she bask in the twinkling lights, sing Christmas carols and go crazy with the decorations, she’s also in the giving spirit, donating much of her time and wealth to various charities in the local area.

Charlie Sullivan despises Christmas. Though it keeps his family afloat, considering they own Sullivan Family Christmas Tree Farm, the main provider for Christmas trees on the Monterey peninsula. He’d much rather work among the trees versus have to deal with people.

But Charlie’s parents are taking on more philanthropic projects—and as their oldest child, they want him to be their official public representative. He just has to play nice and convince everyone he’s not a total holiday hater.

When Charlie’s mom asks Candice to accompany him to a variety of holiday parties and events, she reluctantly agrees. She thinks Charlie is a big ol’ Grinch, but is determined to change his mindset and help him spread Christmas cheer. Charlie finds Candice too chatty, too sweet, too much. Do people like her really exist?

Why yes, yes they do. The more time they spend together—along with a few kisses under the mistletoe—the more they start to like each other. Hopefully Charlie can convince Candice he doesn’t have a heart that’s two sizes too small before the ball drops on New Year’s Eve.

A stand-alone, contemporary romance.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I am a sucker for Hallmark Christmas movies, and Holidate should be one! It has all the makings of a feel-good, enemies-to-lovers holiday tale!

Despite the fact that his family is literally in the business of Christmas, Charlie is quite a grinch. Meanwhile, Candice is overflowing with holiday cheer. When Charlie is forced to spend time with chipper Candice for business reasons, he counts the seconds until their time together is over. But before long, he can’t wait to see her again.

Holidate is a wonderful story with a surly, brooding alpha male and the fiesty and fun-loving woman who shows him that life is worth enjoying. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Holi-date - Teaser 11 AN.jpg

Excerpt:

I go chasing after Charlie, thankful he hasn’t hopped back on that ATV and torn out of here. He’s headed straight for the giant red building, and I follow behind, having to pick up my step since one of his long strides equals about three of mine. He’s just so stinkin’ tall.

And handsome.

And gruff.

And he smells good. Have I mentioned that? He smells like a pine tree, of course, and his scent is mouth-wateringly delicious.

Ugh. I hate myself sometimes.

He pushes open the door of the building almost violently, sending it swinging wide, and I sneak in behind him, causing him to turn and practically snarl at me when he realizes I’m standing in front of him.

But I forget all about his snarl when I see how enchanting this room is. It’s not an office, but an actual store, filled to the brim with holiday decorations and knickknacks for sale. Candles are burning—I can smell cinnamon and spice wafting in the air. The scent of the real pine trees laden with ornaments standing in the room also lingers, and I breathe deep, closing my eyes for a moment so I can take it all in.

When I open my eyes, it’s to find Charlie standing there, his hands on his hips, his brow lowered. “Are you okay? That head injury still flaring up and giving you trouble?”

I roll my eyes. “No, you idiot. I’m enjoying the festive atmosphere.”

Oh, that was mean. I shouldn’t have said that.

But I don’t think he even noticed.

I slowly turn in a circle, pure delight flowing through my veins. I don’t know what to look at first, it’s all so beautiful. And there are layers upon layers of decorations. On the walls, cluttering shelves and tabletops, overflowing giant baskets. And of course there are the trees. They almost sag with their bounty of sparkling ornaments and twinkling lights. It would probably take me hours to explore it all, and I’m dying to start my exploration right at this very moment. “This store is so adorable!”

“My sister Victoria runs it.” He glances over at the counter where the register sits, but no one’s there. “I don’t know where she’s at, though. Maybe you could talk to her about—whatever it is you want to talk about.”

No way is he pushing this agenda onto his sister. Isabel wants Charlie to do this, and no one else.

“We’ve wasted the past five minutes with you huffing and puffing and refusing to speak to me.” I reach into my large bag and pull the folder out I wanted to show him. “Give me ten minutes. That’s all I need to talk about what we’re going to do over the next few weeks.”

He grimaces. Sighs. Tugs the cap off his head, all that gorgeous hair spilling across his forehead, and my fingers literally itch at the chance to push it out of his eyes.

But I restrain myself.

Barely.
