Sunny Shelly’s Review: My Bestie’s Ex, by Piper Rayne

I can’t borrow him.

He’s not a sweater or a skirt.

He’s not even her favorite dress—the lucky one she wears on first dates. The one she probably wore on her first date with him.

In my defense, I didn’t know who he was. To me, he was a cool, calm, confident stranger. He was perfection for the entire hour and a half train ride while the concrete jungle turned into a rolling green landscape.

To an outsider, we probably appeared more friends than hopeful lovers. But my blush came quickly, and his dimples indented with every smile. We definitely shared a spark of what could be.

Too bad I didn’t know who he was before I fell for him, because he can’t be mine.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I really liked this kick-off to a new series by Piper Rayne. It’s a spin-off of the Blue Collar Heroes series, and My Bestie’s Ex starts with the little sister of the Mancini brothers.

There’s an immediate connection with Blanca and Ethan, from the moment that they meet on the train one Sunday night. The chance meeting has an effect on both of them, so they are both wildly disappointed to discover the next morning that Blanca is Ethan’s new co-worker. Ethan has some commitment issues, some anger issues stemming from his family, so he really waffles on whether or not to even date Blanca. And after lots of mixed signals and hot and cold behavior, Blanca puts him in his place, refusing to be a doormat if he doesn’t want to take a chance.

The little bubble that Ethan and Blanca are living in come crashing down when they discover that the childhood best friend she recently reconnected with and is living with is Ethan’s ex. There’s no breaking of girl code, since Blanca’d never met him and the rest of the crew calls him Sigmund. It all blows up in their faces, of course, when pal Dylan pieces it all together, and there’s a lot of great conversations that come out of the revelation. A lot of honest conversations are had by all three parties.

I really loved how mature they all were about it. I really loved the connection between Ethan and Blanca. Once he got over things and committed to her, he opens up his heart and their connection jumped off the page.

There are some hysterical appearances by Blanca’s older brothers and their women, for fans who read the Blue Collar series, but not enough that I felt lost for not having read those three books. I can’t wait to see what comes next for the Rooftop Crew, expecially Dylan and Rian!! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Always Yours, by Kennedy Fox

Rehearsals, leotards, and textbooks—that was my life.
Dancing is all I’ve ever known, but when Liam’s problems turn everything upside down, I’m thrust into a world I know nothing about. Secrets and betrayal changed the man I’ve fallen for and he isn’t who I thought he was. Regardless, Liam is all I’ve ever wanted and though I’m struggling with my emotions, deep down I’d do anything for him.
When Liam admitted his true feelings, things finally fell into place. Now they’re falling apart. Saving our relationship is his top priority, but keeping him alive is mine. Corruption and power are their game and Liam is nothing more than a pawn. Playing by the rules won’t end well, but I can’t let him fight alone this time.
Our happily ever after is so close I can taste it, but then it quickly crashes and burns, threatening to destroy us. Giving up on the love of my life isn’t an option, but in the end I might not be able to save him.

ALWAYS YOURS is a slow-burn, intense romance wrapped up in a suspenseful beautiful love story. It’s book 2 in the Liam & Madelyn duet and must be read in order.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

A great ending to the Roommates series! This is part 2 of the Liam & Maddie duet, and not a stand-alone.

Always Yours picks up right where Always Mine left off. When Maddie’s life is in danger because of choices Liam has made, he will risk everything to keep her safe and in his life forever.

Even though Liam and Maddie are apart for a chunk of this book, the undeniable love is still there between them. She broke him down, wormed her way into his heart and made the guy who never thought he’d want to be in a relationship want forever with her. I thought that some additional scenarios that popped up were unnecessary, but by the time I finished, I understood that they served a greater purpose in setting the stage for Tyler’s spin-off coming up next.

I loved the epilogue with the in-the-future updates for the three Corrigan sisters and their husbands.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Breathless, by Lex Martin

Title: Breathless
A Texas Nights Series Standalone
Author: Lex Martin
Genre: Contemporary Romance
 Release Date: February 18, 2020

Blurb

Joey
I wouldn’t say I ran away exactly—twenty-two is too old for that.
I’d call it self-preservation.
I have one objective: protect my heart from the boy next
door who has no clue I’ve loved him my whole life, even with a front row seat
to his revolving bedroom door.
My escape plan almost worked.
Except I left one thing behind.
Logan Carter hijacked my heart, and now it’s time to get it
back. This time for good.
Logan
I wouldn’t say I’ve been lying this whole time—not about
everything.
Not about how much I miss my best friend, and definitely not
about how pissed I am that she left with hardly a goodbye.
She’s the last person I ever expected to ghost me, and her
absence left a gaping hole in my chest.
When Joey Grayson steps off that bus, I know I’ll do
anything to keep her home, and that means finding out the truth.
But I’m not sure how to tell her my truths when I’m living
so many lies.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Breathless is the kind of best-friends-romance where Josephine (Joey) has been in love with the other forever, and then one day, it just kind of smacks Logan in the face how fantastic his best friend is. Logan tries to fight his growing feelings for Joey, especially since he’s got a huge secret he’s trying to keep from his family.

I liked how Joey finally gathered her strength to confess her feelings to Logan and tell him why she ran away all those months ago. It was a miscommunication of sorts, as a result of the family secret Logan’s been keeping, and that should have been Logan’s time to come clean with her. But because he doesn’t, Joey’s life is then put at risk — will Logan get to her before it’s too late?

This is a swoony romance with all the right checkmarks for a best friend’s romance, complete with a bit of crazy other woman drama. Breathless is the third in a series with the Carter brothers, but it is a standalone. I have not read the other two books, and even though Logan’s brothers and their families are part of the bigger story, they don’t monopolize it or take anything away from Logan and Joey’s romance.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Teacher I Want To Date is pretty standard fare romcom: quirky heroine, hero with a romantic side, and an unbelievable meet-cute. I mean, Gabby is about to have Mason arrested for perving on a group of her teenage students, while he’s actually spying on his niece’s group date. It’s hysterical.

There’s a nice development to their relationship, and the input that they both get from their crazy families adds dimension to the characters. (I hate when characters have zero interaction with their families.)

In a nutshell, Teacher I Want To Date is a great low-angst story. The characters are relatable, the scenarios are believable, and their relationship unfolds at a nice pace. Apparently, Mason is a character from other Mia Kayla books, but I have not read them — and it was fine. This story stands on its own.

“Will you help me remember?”

That’s the second thing I ask the stranger hovering just outside of my hospital room. To me, Decker Fredric is another nameless face in the crowd. To him, I’m a forgotten girl he hasn’t seen in years. But he agrees to be my crutch through the fog as if we were once friends.

Everything is a blank canvas spreading far and wide in front of me. Any direction I take, my steps stumble over the unknown. Decker becomes the only reliable constant in my life. I lean on him too hard, but he doesn’t seem to mind. His unwavering patience and guidance restore some semblance of normal I don’t recall having.

My attraction to Decker is instant, but he appears indifferent. Until the day his stare holds a bit too much heat. In return, I dare to let my touch linger. Our hugs cling tighter than a simple embrace should. But we have no business defying the distinct line cutting between us.

Decker Fredric was never mine to keep. But that doesn’t stop me from wanting him to be.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Amnesia romances can be tricky, because I feel like there’s a fine line to straddle before the amnesiac is being taken advantage of in some way. So I really liked that in Keeper, Delaney and Decker have a bit of a history together, having been friends of sorts in high school. The evolution of their romance really starts in a friendship. Sure, he’s always had a thing for her (his sister’s good friend), and she’s immediately attracted to Decker and feels a pull to him like nobody else. They get to know each other as friends before they cross that line, and it’s swoony and sweet as tatted-up Decker falls head over heels for Delaney.

But Keeper isn’t all hearts and flowers — eventually, Delaney finds out who was responsible for beating her into a coma, and it gives Decker a chance to be her knight in shining armor.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Unbreakable, by Melanie Harlow

Unbreakable - BT banner

“Unbreakable is everything you expect from a Melanie Harlow novel: emotional, sexy and a love that’s worth risking it all for. I could not get enough of Henry and Sylvia’s story!”

— Corinne Michaels, New York Times bestselling author

Unbreakable, an all new “do not miss” sexy and emotional second chance romance from USA Today bestselling author Melanie Harlow, is available now!

Unbreakable AMAZON

In hindsight, I should not have had that fifth mimosa at Breakfast with Santa.

Or the sixth, seventh, and eighth.

But my shame over the public meltdown that resulted was nothing compared to being abandoned by my husband of fifteen years for a much younger woman—and did I mention she’s pregnant?

For the sake of my children and my pride, I pack up and head for my childhood home and the small town where I grew up. Cloverleigh Farms would be the perfect place for a fresh start.

Falling for Henry DeSantis wasn’t part of the plan.

Sure, he’s easy on the eyes and hard in the bedroom (also the hallway, the bathtub, and on top of his desk), but he’s newly divorced too, and things between us are moving so fast I’m afraid neither one of us has had enough time to heal. Not to mention the fact that I’m a single mom now—my kids have to come first.

But Henry makes me feel beautiful and sexy and wanted and strong—things I haven’t felt in years. We understand each other, and when I’m in his arms, I’m tempted to trust again. To love again. To let myself be loved without fear.

But deep down, I’m terrified.

Is this all too much, too soon? Or am I a fool to let a second chance at happily ever after pass me by?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I know that Melanie Harlow said she wasn’t planning on writing a book about oldest Sawyer sister Sylvia, but I am so glad that she did! Sylvia and Henry’s story was so different from the others in the Cloverleigh Farms series, as they are both divorced. Their romance was magical.

Sylvia put her own hopes and dreams on hold when she got married and started a family. Now that arrogant Brett has left her for JCrew Kimmy and is starting an new family, Sylvia moves home after her divorce with her two kids. There is an immediate connection between her and the head winemaker, Henry, and they bond over their failed marriages.

There is a different tone to Sylvia and Henry’s courtship than the other books had. Their feelings of loneliness, insecurity, failure, trust and worthiness take center stage as they lean on one another and heal from their failed marriages. Her two kids, well mostly her daughter, doesn’t make it easy on them when it comes to them dating, and even though they go back to being just friends, Sylvia and Henry fall head over heels in love, building a lasting connection.

There is great growth on the part of her daughter, Whitney, and it is the teen who plays matchmaker for Sylvia and Henry in the end. Their entire romance, from start to engagement, takes place over only three months, but when you’ve been there and done that, you know that you don’t want to waste time when it feels so right.

I adored this story, and was so happy for Sylvia to get a second chance at love. And Henry is so sweet and patient! I can’t wait to see what is in store for Alice when her book comes out! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

BLURB:

USA Today bestselling author Meghan Quinn brings more humor and heart with the third novel of her Getting Lucky series: a story about breaking curses and laying your heart on the line.

What happens when your secret crush isn’t so secret anymore?

I’ve had feelings for Eve Roberts for as long as I can remember, but because she also happens to be the twin sister of my best friend, Eric, I’ve never acted on my feelings and long ago resigned myself to keeping my crush under wraps.

But after a terrible falling-out with Eric involving a failed restaurant venture and plenty of blame on both sides, I’m back in Port Snow without my best friend and without any direction. But can you guess who’s here? Eve. And my attraction to her is as strong as ever.

As old feelings rush back, Eve and I find ourselves pulled together, whether we like it or not. Lines are crossed, secrets are kept, and we soon discover that the difference between love and friendship may not be so black and white, after all.

Everyone wants that secret crush to love them back…but will I be ready when she does?

ThatSecretCrush_teaser-1

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Ah, I love the Knightly brothers, and each book somehow surpasses the last!

Reid was a rough one. The curse that hit the brothers when it comes to their love lives happened to hit the same night that Reid and his best friend, Eric, lost their restaurant. He has been in a massive funk ever since, just existing and practically living as a hermit. But the one thing he seems to still care about is Eric’s twin sister, Eve, whom Reid always has a crush on.

There’s a great moment of companionship and solace between Eve and Reid before they cross the line into something more than friends. There is a long history between them, and they go through the whole list when deciding whether or not to date.

Being with Eve makes Reid want to be a better man, and when complications arise that threaten their relationship, he takes the coward’s way out out of fear. Quinn does a great job of writing the conflict, not only between Eve and Reid, but the emotions he goes through with the prospect of opening another restaurant and letting down his dad, and the tensions that arise when Eric returns to Port Snow.

In the end, all three of them make mistakes and jump to conclusions. But there’s a beautiful reconciliation to it all… and Reid swoops in Iike the white knight he always wanted to be for Eve.

That Secret Crush is a swoony, best friends romance, one that will make your heart flutter.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: We, The Wildflowers by L.B. Simmons

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

We, The Wildflowers is unlike anything you will ever read again. The tale told about Genesis, Chloe, Adam and Lukas is heartbreaking. It will gut you as these four young, broken souls form a makeshift family of their own in a foster home. I mean, life has been about as rough as it can get for these four teenagers. Yet they somehow, by a support group of their own making, manage to find a sliver 0f light in the darkest of places.

This book is definitely not an easy one to read. For a YA story, it has a decidedly dark tone and touches upon some heavy topics. Yet as hopeless as life seems at times for the Wildflowers, they never give up hope that things will someday be different, someday be better, and I couldn’t help but cheer them on and hope for their sake that it would.

We, The Wildflowers is a beautifully written, poignant coming-of-age story. It will have you sobbing at times, smiling at others. It is not a romance (as most of the books I read are), but it is most definitely a love story between these four extraordinary characters.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Meet L.B. Simmons
After graduating from Texas A&M University, L.B. Simmons did what any biomedical science major could do. She entered the workforce as a full-time chemist. Years later, never in her wildest dreams would she have imagined herself a USA Today Bestselling contemporary romance author as well.

What began as a memoir for her children, ended up being her first self-published book, Running on Empty. Initially it was written to chronicle their actions, their phrases, and their silly arguments so that when they were older, they would always have those memories. The memoir soon began to take on a life of its own, morphing into the story of a single mother with three little girls finding love when she least expected it. Soon after, her girls were given reoccurring roles in the remainder of what became the Mending Hearts series.

That’s how her journey as an author began, and she hopes to God it never ends.

L.B. Simmons doesn’t just write books. With each new work, she attempts to compose journeys of love and self-discovery so she may impart life lessons to readers. Several novels later, she’s tackled suicide, depression, bullying, eating disorders, as well as physical and sexual abuse, all the while weaving elements of humor into the storylines in effort to balance the difficult topics. Often described as roller coaster rides, her novels are known for eliciting a wide range of emotions in each story she tells.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Oh my goodness! From the author who brought us the incomparable Transcend Duet comes a new, what-the-hell-did-I-just-read first part of a new duet. Seriously. What did I just read? The tale that Jewel E. Ann weaves with these characters is mesmerizing.

This is not your typical love story. There is a love story between Evelyn and Ronin, but there are so many intersecting characters and relationships and twists and turns, that this book certainly does not follow a formula. The prologue will leave you wanting more…. and you don’t even get it by the time you get to the last page. That cliffhanger!

I have so many theories about this book. And I can only hope they will be answered when The Life You Stole comes out!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: One-Eighty, by Marie James

🔥🔥 NEW RELEASE 🔥🔥

One-Eighty by Marie James is LIVE and FREE in KU!

A bully romance like no other! One Eighty is a whole new take on a trope that I have quite the love/hate relationship with and this book landed on MEGA love for me. I’m super picky when it comes to bully romance, I need to see and be able to actually feel the characters to be able to love a hero that has done so many truly atrocious things, but Marie James took that to a whole new level with Dalton. There’s a lot of heartbreak in their story, a lot of forgiving, a lot of growing up and every bit of it had me glued to the pages.” ~Red Hatter Book Blog

He loves what he can’t remember —she can’t forget the truth…

PIPER
Arrogant, controlling, and an absolute jerk.
He’s everything I loathe, and everything I want to forget.
But he doesn’t remember a bit of it.
One accident, one misstep, changed everything.
Changed him.
Now, he’s different and unbelievably sexy.
But I refuse to fall for a bully.

DALTON
Sexy, smart, feisty, and perfect.
She’s everything I want, and nothing that I remember.
What she says I am, I refuse to believe.
For her, I will be anything.
I will do anything.
Even destroy the bully from before.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Wow, wow, wow. One-Eighty completely blew me away! This not what I was expecting from a bully romance. And it ended up being so much more. It’s a heartfelt, emotional story about forgiveness, redemption, self-loathing, and learning to look past what you think you know about someone to see the gentle, kind heart on the inside.

A good chunk of this book was horribly difficult to read. The ways that Dalton torments poor Piper, his next-door neighbor, is just so damn difficult to read. And then after his accident, an amnesiac Dalton is a completely different person. He has no recollection of their history, and it’s almost difficult to read his realization of how he treated Piper in the past.

This is the first book I’ve read by Marie James, and it won’t be the last! One-Eighty is a standalone starter in a new series, and I look forward to seeing what comes next in this series! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

The author is giving away a signed hardback of One-Eighty, a $25 Amazon Gift Card, a Kindle Fire 7, a journal, and a Victoria Secret fragrance set. Open US only.
